Two packages show up today that were sent on July 1st
to my old address...though I must point out here that
on July 1st, the OBC Directory had not yet shown my
new address. If these senders had gotten a little
nervous that I never thanked their generosity, I'm
sorry. It's the USPS's fault!
DOUG DeJONG sends a dozen hits to my 1976 wantlist,
including Chris Chambliss, Rusty Staub and Tony Oliva,
plus three Leaders cards!
From the Windy City, GEORGE VRECHEK sends a short
stack of cards with the following note: "Hello Chris
-- An `Aaron' and 3 cards of a convicted felon." Sure
enough...a 1969 Tommie Aaron and three Denny McLain
cards from the same set (regular card, leaders card
and checklist). Also in the stack are 4 "cool grays"
including another checklist and two cards
commemorating the '69 Series.

I received quite a package today from my buddy Kent Goto, fresh off of his

1966: Both cards I needed to complete my set, including the impossible

1968: 3 of the 4 I needed to complete that one, with two Clementes!
Anybody have a #505 Joe Sparma??
1970: Three cool high # grays, including Frank Robby and Al Kaline!
1959: Don Drysdale, the awesome Campy in a wheelchair card, and the Mantle
Thrills card! That's enough for a good year right there!
1957: A very sweet Rocco Colavito rookie card - is somebody tallying this
1955 Bowman: A Johnny Podres looking quite young on color TV!
1953: A Preacher Roe high number Dodger card!
WOW!! I'm speechless with this package...what can you say to a puffy like

2) Bob D'Angelo helped out the league leader quest with a 60's K LL

3) Ed Schott from Baltimore tossed in four 73 O's. Thank you Ed.
4) Last but not least the Guru grading guy sent me some OBC stickers

Many belated thank you’s to get through, so here goes!
LYNN MILLER (I think) – I received an envelope with a return address in Lynnwood, Washington on it. There was no note inside, and the address didn’t match that of any of our Washington brethren. My only clue was a few words on the front of the envelope (the sender must have realised they’d forgotten a note) which says “Enjoy! – Lynn”. I am therefore going to assume that the items came from everyone’s favorite bubblehead. Anyway, the envelope contain a pair of items for my ever growing Bobby Thomson collection – an article cut from the NewYork Post of Oct 1, 1993 which is an excerpt from Roger Kahn’s book “The Era – 1947-1957”. The excerpt describes “The Shot Heard ‘Round The World”. Accompanying the article was a autographed UV of Thomson. Both of these items have found an appropriate place in “The Collection Heard ‘Round Glenn’s Backyard”.
KIT OKAMURO – Occasionally, an SCP turns up that makes you sit back and go “WHOA!”. Kit comes through with one of those, hitting my birthyear list with card #28, an absolutely beautiful Brooks Robinson. Great card, Kit!!
JOHN SCOTT GRAY – One a da noo guys makes an instant impression, knocking 7 cards off my seemingly rarely hit 1965 list including a cool Bobby Richardson.
DAN AUSTIN – Dan hits Glasgow with a pile of nearly 50 Tigers cards. While all are of the type that we don’t talk about around here, there are some great names and some welcome additions to my Tigers collection.
DOUG SMITH – A very special thank you goes out to Trader Doug, but you’ll have to check out my message on the OBC Ramblings server for it!
Thanks to all of you for taking the time to help me out!

Two packages arrive today:
BILL MALSON send along a three-pack. One cool gray
and two black beauties. One of the '71s is a Chuck
Hinton that was bought for a quarter, or at least was
marked at that price in pencil across Hinton's face.
And check out the captionon the back of the '70 Larry
Burchart card: "Larry was nicknamed `Turk' by a minor
league manager who thought he ran like a turkey."
When I played little league, I remember that a coach
calling you a turkey wasn't a good thing.
And now, for the rambling before I get to the other
Back when I was a much younger hobbyist (and I'm
referring to around 1992, when I was 19 and too old to
be called "kid"), I decided that if I was going to
work on just one set from the 1950s, it would have to
be either the '51 Red Backs or the '56 Topps.
According to the hobby guides circa 1986, the Red
Backs were plentiful throughout the hobby, but I was
certainly fooled because I wasn't able to find any.
In fact, I finally picked one up in '92 before going
to college and I never got a second one until after
joining OBC last year. So that left the '56s; I had
over 40 at the time and found the cards were easy to
find, inexpensive and lacked a hard high series. Yes,
I realized I'd have some trouble getting Mantle,
Williams and Robinson, but that seemed to make up for
the lack of high-dollar rookie cards (Aparicio is a
HOFer, but his card isn't that widely sought).
From '92-'98, my interests kind of focused on college,
marriage and career (and our daughter when she was
born in Aug. '98), and the cards took a back
seat...it's a fairly common story. But in '99 I began
to mess around online and found eBay. At that time,
the deals on eBay were incredible and I was plucking a
small stack of 1950s cards for about a dollar apiece.
When my '56 Topps collection swelled to over 75 cards,
I began to focus on it again. But then eBay wasn't
such a good source of cheap cards for me, and I tailed
off the interest again. Right now, I have almost 140
cards and still need about 200 to complete the set.
Then I joined OBC, and among my welcome packages was
an overstuffed puffy from Kent Goto that was half
filled with 1955 Topps. That put me closer to
finishing the '55 set, and I began to reconsider my
The '55 set is small. There is no Mantle card looming
like an 800-lb. gorilla. There is a high series and
the cards are a little harder to find than the average
'56s, but they're not nearly as hard as '52 and '53
Topps Hi #s. And the triumvirate of Koufax, Killer
and Clemente will probably keep me from finishing the
set anytime soon...but after seeing some really rough
ones on eBay that sell for what even a cheap SOB like
me can consider gives me a small amount of hope.
Now, on to the other thanks:
BOB DONALDSON tosses four '55 Topps my way, including
three from the high series, putting me 116 cards away
from putting the set to bed. Among the hits was
Yankee Charlie Silvera, who was a decent catcher but
had the poor fortune of playing behind Yogi Berra and
Elston Howard. Charlie's '54 Topps card has graced my
collection since 1989...back when my only four cards
were all Yankees (Martin, Rizzuto, Lopat and Collins
were the others), and one of the dealers I used to buy
from explained to me that Silvera earned more World
Series money per play than anybody in history.
Oops...almost shifted into another rambling there...
Thanks for the trip down memory lane, Bob.

From: "pugsmail"
Thanks to Bob D'Angelo, Earl "EEK" Kilbourn, Bob Corvello, Bill
Malson, Mike Wierzbicki, and John Leroux for sending 73 Topps cards
to help get my set off to a great start. I forget who sent me the
Larry Bowa no "Yanks Suck" variation, but thanks.
Mike Wierbicki also sent me a Yaz and Frank Roby, thanks Mike.
John Leroux also sent a Yaz along with the 73 cards. Thanks John
Bob Pigeon made the first dent in the 68 Gamer set with a Hammerin'
Hank card. Thanks a bunch -- it's nice to get the first one on that
Last but not least, Brian Dwyer helped the league leader subset quest
with two nice cards. One of them had a guy named Bob from Pittsburgh
on it. That guy could really hit! Played a pretty awesome RF as well.
Thanks again for all the cards and for the really super welcome to
the group. I've got a lot of wantlists to look over and I'll be
sending out some cards.
Take care,

From somewhere deep in the Mojave, to the heights of the Helderberg
Hilltowns of New York, comes a beauty from Capt. (or is it Admiral
now?) Wagner - an upgrade to my 1961 Rocky Colavito. And a nice
upgrade it is, thanks Geno!!!!

Hi gang,
Wednesday thanks to Bob Donaldson, who sends a 1951 Topps Red Back of Ralph Kiner!
Thanks also to John Pugsley, who sends a promo card of the Florida Suncoast Dome (now Tropicana Field) from the late 1980s. Way cool, a great addition to this Tampa Bay area collection.

thanks to give out starting with BOB PIGEON who sends a couple
hi# rookie stars to the 69T's as well as a 2 pack (where's the other
4??) to the 59T's including Whitey (not Ashburn) Lockman and the Pres
(NL) himself, Warren Giles.
Many thanks Bob!!
An SCP arrived
from Chamberlin Ave. (love the address, not the spelling) and that means
GENO WAGNER with a 1956 Topps Red Sox Milt Bolling..and in nice
shape ta boot!! And of course the signature APBA card of the
Eck...another great Sox "giveaway"...love that "kick".
Thanks
Geno!!
And the last thanks for this go 'round goes out to ERIK
GREENWOOD who hits 3 lists with a pair ot 59T's including Jim Owens
(was that him we saw at Cooperstown Bri???), another pair of 65's with a
league leader whose "one time" owner obviously was not pleased with the
fact that the Cubbies Jackson led the N.L. in victories!!
Erik also
sends 3 nice "hits" to the 69's including a Bob Gibson!! Super
Erik...now all I need is the fiftynine Bob
Gibson...(grinning...like the Cheshire Cat himself!!)
Thanks
Erik!!
And thanks overall to these, and past "hits", from all, not
so much for the cardboard, but for the thought!! Much appreciation
