LYNN MILLER (I think) – I received an envelope with a return address in Lynnwood, Washington on it. There was no note inside, and the address didn’t match that of any of our Washington brethren. My only clue was a few words on the front of the envelope (the sender must have realised they’d forgotten a note) which says “Enjoy! – Lynn”. I am therefore going to assume that the items came from everyone’s favorite bubblehead. Anyway, the envelope contain a pair of items for my ever growing Bobby Thomson collection – an article cut from the NewYork Post of Oct 1, 1993 which is an excerpt from Roger Kahn’s book “The Era – 1947-1957”. The excerpt describes “The Shot Heard ‘Round The World”. Accompanying the article was a autographed UV of Thomson. Both of these items have found an appropriate place in “The Collection Heard ‘Round Glenn’s Backyard”. KIT OKAMURO – Occasionally, an SCP turns up that makes you sit back and go “WHOA!”. Kit comes through with one of those, hitting my birthyear list with card #28, an absolutely beautiful Brooks Robinson. Great card, Kit!! JOHN SCOTT GRAY – One a da noo guys makes an instant impression, knocking 7 cards off my seemingly rarely hit 1965 list including a cool Bobby Richardson. One cool gray and two black beauties. One of the '71s is a Chuck Hinton that was bought for a quarter, or at least was marked at that price in pencil across Hinton's face. And check out the captionon the back of the '70 Larry Burchart card: "Larry was nicknamed `Turk' by a minor league manager who thought he ran like a turkey." When I played little league, I remember that a coach calling you a turkey wasn't a good thing. And now, for the rambling before I get to the other Back when I was a much younger hobbyist (and I'm referring to around 1992, when I was 19 and too old to be called "kid"), I decided that if I was going to work on just one set from the 1950s, it would have to be either the '51 Red Backs or the '56 Topps. According to the hobby guides circa 1986, the Red Backs were plentiful throughout the hobby, but I was certainly fooled because I wasn't able to find any. In fact, I finally picked one up in '92 before going to college and I never got a second one until after joining OBC last year. So that left the '56s; I had over 40 at the time and found the cards were easy to find, inexpensive and lacked a hard high series. Yes, I realized I'd have some trouble getting Mantle, Williams and Robinson, but that seemed to make up for the lack of high-dollar rookie cards (Aparicio is a HOFer, but his card isn't that widely sought). From '92-'98, my interests kind of focused on college, marriage and career (and our daughter when she was born in Aug. '98), and the cards took a back seat...it's a fairly common story. But in '99 I began to mess around online and found eBay. At that time, the deals on eBay were incredible and I was plucking a small stack of 1950s cards for about a dollar apiece. When my '56 Topps collection swelled to over 75 cards, I began to focus on it again. But then eBay wasn't such a good source of cheap cards for me, and I tailed off the interest again. Right now, I have almost 140 cards and still need about 200 to complete the set. Then I joined OBC, and among my welcome packages was an overstuffed puffy from Kent Goto that was half filled with 1955 Topps. That put me closer to finishing the '55 set, and I began to reconsider my The '55 set is small. There is no Mantle card looming like an 800-lb. gorilla. There is a high series and the cards are a little harder to find than the average '56s, but they're not nearly as hard as '52 and '53 Topps Hi #s. And the triumvirate of Koufax, Killer and Clemente will probably keep me from finishing the set anytime soon...but after seeing some really rough ones on eBay that sell for what even a cheap SOB like me can consider gives me a small amount of hope. Now, on to the other thanks: BOB DONALDSON tosses four '55 Topps my way, including three from the high series, putting me 116 cards away from putting the set to bed. Among the hits was Yankee Charlie Silvera, who was a decent catcher but had the poor fortune of playing behind Yogi Berra and Elston Howard. Charlie's '54 Topps card has graced my collection since 1989...back when my only four cards were all Yankees (Martin, Rizzuto, Lopat and Collins were the others), and one of the dealers I used to buy from explained to me that Silvera earned more World Series money per play than anybody in history. Oops...almost shifted into another rambling there... Thanks for the trip down memory lane, Bob. Take care, I am an avid collector of vintage baseball cards. I still remember vivdly the day of Sept. 3rd, 1977 when I took my first bus ride and how Mom made a huge deal about everything. With Melissa, Ellen and I didn't overdo it but instead, we occasionally mentioned that she would be going to a new school for big kids. She went to school today as if it was no big deal. My little girl took a big step forward today and behaved like it wasn't all that big a deal...God, she's growing up so fast. It seems like she was just an infant, and I'm sure it won't be very long before she's a teenager who thinks I'm an idiot every time I open my mouth and keeps insisting that I'm ruining her life. Yep...I'm enjoying it now that I'm still "Daddy." I will be "Dad" far too soon. Anyhow, two packages arrived in the mail today: DAN AUSTIN gives my 1979 set a 21-card salute. Steve Stone and Jim Fregosi were along for the ride, as well as two guys I read about last night in Billy Martin's autobiography...Pat Dobson (Billy wanted his big mouth gone after the '75 season) and Doyle Alexander (part of a huge Yanks/O's trade in 1976 that Billy described as "stupid" on the part of Herr Steinbrenner). I wasvery excited to get my first package from the Guru, a man whose reputationstretches far outside the borders of OBC land. I even called my wife in to watch me open it, explaining how the term Tipton (which I had used before) refers to this fine trader. I wondered, what could be in this envelope? Trimmed cards? Holes punched with a stapler or other device? Perhaps even a card that went through a shredder and then got taped back together? Actually, it was none of the above, as Larry sends me a 67 Topps high number that would range in vg to ex condition! Tipton sending vg to ex cards!?!? Quite the shock on the poor heart of a newbie such as myself! Still, regardless of the condition, that tough high number (featuring Doug Camilli of YOUR Wash'gton Senators) was greatly appreciated! To: OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com From: WMDpks@aol.com One of the most exciting games in the 10-year history of Dutchess Stadium tonight - the Renegades beat the Lowell Spinners, 1-0, on a tenth-inning, bases loaded, one-out, 2-0 count perfectly executed suicide squeeze bunt. Can life get any better? I submit that it cannot. But I would be wrong about that, because John Storman sent me a tough pair of 1950 Bowman's. #240 Eddie Lake, and #216 Bob Porterfield (a Yankee). These cards are in really terrific condition, very pleasant VG/Ex and it's hard to believe how close I'm getting on my 1950 Bowman set. The remaining cards have been really tough for me to track down and I have been looking for these two particular cards for over a decade. I've been keeping a low profile lately but have finally figured out how to crack the IBM firewall on my laptop, so I can now maintain the website while on business for IBM in Raleigh/Durham, NC. I will be working third shift all of next week in addition to most of first shift, so muchas coffee will be drunk. Speaking of getting close on my favorite sets, one of my most favorite has slowly and steadily been winding down, the 1975 Topps Mini's. Another shout-out goes to D'Angelo and Silva for hitting a couple of tough spots on the wantlist, which I notice is becoming a realistic goal for completing before I get too old. All because of OBC, this set has come out of nowhere to really rejuvenate the "collecting jones" I had when I was putting together the mid-1970's sets in the early 1980's. First is a tough 61 Nu-Card Scoops card, then a 72 Milton Bradley (and I'm pretty sure it is Bama but I'll have to check it out with our resident "oddball" Mike Rich, I mean "oddball item expert"), and then a 76 Towne Club Disc. How great it is to get 3 hits to my Hank list. Thanks so much Bama. Dave continues the great Hank theme with a wonderful 8X10 photo of "The Hammer" just after he crossed the plate after hitting #715. Great photo! But what's really neat about it is that former President Carter is at home plate to greet him and is prominent in the photo. He and I share something in common. He was a former U.S. Navy submarine skipper. I wasnt' a Commanding Officer, but I was a submariner also. Hence my eBay ID of "bubble-head", a nickname that Navy people use to describe submariners. Thanks very much Dave for the super photo. And just a note here. A lot of you are probably asking yourself why do I want the photo. Many of you have asked to send me Aaron items that aren't on my list and I've replied that I only would like to collect the cards issued of him. That is true. But if I'm "surprised" with an Aaron item, I'm sure not going to send it back :-) As dug-dug would say, "nuff said". And Grant and Bob keep this submarine thing going by tag-teaming and sending me (it's at least vintage although not exactly baseball related but it counts for me) a very nice First Day Cover of the commissioning of the USS Casimir Pulaski (SSBN633) in 1964. The venerable Steve Rittenberg knocked off 3 of the 4 listed HIGH NUMBEREDcards on my 1972 Psycho set !!! That is such great news, I can hardly stand it !! The only problem is the fact that I had a pile of cards jump shipand disappear from the binder, so I still have to either find them or re-acquire them....but those are not high numbers, so it's gonna be much easier...whew !! I can't believe it, but after 31 years, I am within a few cards of finishing this set !!! WOW THANKS STEVE !! The next contribution is another high number !! From a much older set, the 1953 Topps !!! Thanks out today to DIGDUGDIG from little ol' Florence, OR !!! The OBCer right down the street is pecking away at my oldest Topps Set !! Mostly high numbers left there too...but at least I've only been collecting this set a few years, unlike the psychos. I love this 53 set because itis the one that really showed me the Tipton way. You should see some of these beauties, even the Guru hisself might cringe at the Rizutto or the Granny Hamner in my binder LOL !!! Thanks again Doug !!! Eek included a note, but failed to mention anything about the 1950 Bowman card of Detroit Tiger Vic Wertz, that I discovered lurking among those '80's. I guess Eek figured there had to be a Tiger hit in there somewhere to make it an offical "FOOT"* transaction. Thanks Earl. This summer went just like I new it would. It's almost over and I'm wondering what happened to it. Last Spring I had hoped to try to organize a get-together sometime at a Toledo Mud Hens game at the new Fifth/Third field, but as the season winds down I see it's not likely this year. I'm still hopefull of being able to attend another gathering of the "FOOT"* sometime soon. * FOOT: Fraternal Order Of Tigerfans. I tried the same tactic with my wife...I even told her she could simply consult my web site for card info. But in our 10 years together, Ellen has picked up this 1. When in doubt, just turn over the card. The last year of statistics will be the year before the card was issued. 2. If the card doesn't have any year-by-year statistics, call Chris and describe the card to him. 3. The slightly larger cards make Chris really happy. But they're really expensive. Same with smaller cards with painted player pictures. Yes, I realize #2 would be a little harder if I were to get hit by a bus. But except for a few years, Ellen doesn't recognize cards that quickly. As far as I know, she knows the 1952, 1962 and 1972 Topps designs. She calls the '75 design the "acid" set because she thinks whoever designed it was taking some when he came up with the colors to use but can't say it's a '75 unless she turns it over. Now, I just print out my wantlist and leave it in a conspicuous place should Ellen ever decide to buy some cards for me. Should she ever decide to buy me a Mantle card, maybe her recognition of the 1952 Topps design can work in my favor! Take care, I am an avid collector of vintage baseball cards. I'd like to thanks Mike Rich for a nice care package that arrrive this week. Mike included some 74 footballs hits and a 68 McCovey, but most of all he sent along two 72 variations that have been very difficult for me to find - Cubs with green under their "C" and "S"'s. They were in great conditions too! Thanks mike and I hope everyone has a great Labor Day. To: OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com From: jceru8600@aol.com Hello OBCers, A rainy weekend in MD, gives way to riches in the mailbox. Mike Rich graces my mailbox with a 1936 Fine Pen of Hildebrand getting that set under twenty. Gotta love the photos of this overlooked set from the 30's. Also, Mike added three more 39 Playballs to include Pete Fox, Frank Demaree, and umpire Dolly Stark (gotta be the same Dolly Stark from T206 fame, not sure but has to be, how many Dolly's are associated with Baseball ) Thanks, Mike!!! for the great old cardboard!!! Take care, Joe Cerullo ================= To: Subject: thanks Date: Sun, 31 Aug 2003 10:55:24 -0700 From: "terry ellis" thanks to mike rich for a 59 and a 60 thanks, kit okamuro
