Subject: A REAL "Tipton" joins the collection...
To: obc-thanks@yahoogroups.com
From: Chris Stufflestreet
True to his word, LARRY TIPTON sends me his upgraded
'65 Joe Morgan/Sonny Jackson RC. While at a show this
weekend, he upgraded the card for five bucks and
offered to send his old one my way.
At the time, he said to me that "that Morgan card is
one of the worst cards in my collection." Considering
the whole OBC "Tipton" phenomena, I imagined a
terrible card. Don't get me wrong...I have no problem
with low-condition cards; I have a bunch of them in my
1958 Topps (my "Dog Pound") set-in-progress. I'm
proud to add anybody's beater to my collection.
The card is truly a "Tipton Mint." One corner
rounded, two corners layered, and one corner torn off.
Creases show up like a raod map over Morgan's photo,
but only a couple of minor creases appear over Jackson
(The owner before Larry must not have been a Reds
fan). The back of the card has been personalized as
well. Somebody scratched Morgan's stats out with a
pencil (again, probably not ford of the Reds) and did
some kind of math problem with Jackson's minor league
doubles total. I can now take card #...actually, I'm
not certain, because that was the corner that had been
ripped away...off my '65 wantlist.
Thanks Larry. It may not sound like I'm saying it,
but Morgan's RC has its own place of honor among the
motley crew that makes up up '65 set-in-progress.
Take care,

Subject: Jim Benefits from Guru's Pagan ritual....
To: OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com
From: XTrJmx@aol.com
Hi all... While many of you may not consider the mailing of trading cards to
be a Pagan ritual, I contend that it is... at least when there's a terrific
'65 of Jose Pagan included! Guru also tossed in a trio of other '65s, a pair of
'63s, and a lone '64 of Bobby Bragan. One of the other '65s was of former
Twin Lenny Green, sporting Red Sox colors, that made me feel great. In every
card I'd seen of Lenny in a Twins uniform, he looked extraordinarily dour, like
the photographer had just told him that opening day in Minnesota would sport
temperatures in the low teens... below zero. Well, he doesn't look much
happier in the Red Sox colors, so now I can stop feeling that it was something
personal against us Minnesotans. Then again, maybe the expression is just frozen
on his face. Anyway, it's great cardboard of great players and a really nice
note enclosed as well, and it just doesn't get better than that. Thanks very,
very much Larry... hope you have a blessed 4th!
A second envelope graced my mailbox this week... a scintillating stamped
sensation from Linda Fitak. Besides the always-collectible envelope, Linda sent a
pair of '63s and an awesome single of Jim Busby from the best post-war set on
the universe... the '53 Bowman color cards. AWESOME!! Along with the kind
cards for me, Linda added a cool card of Shawn Green for my daughter. While
looks can be deceptive, I don't think Shawn is any relation to the
aforementioned Lenny Green. Thanks a ton, Linda, from me AND from Sarah!
Hope all of you have a wonderful and safe Independence Day. Take care,

Two packages find their way to the new house that
merit thanks:
JIM WEIHE wows me with an eclectic package that
scattered hits to a wide variety of wantlists. In
fact, he hit all three of my main wantlists. My UV
wantlist took the brunt of the damage, with several
sets affected. My Steelers wantlist was hit twice,
but both hits were team set-killers! Finally, my main
wantlist was hit with five cards: a '78, two mid-level
seats from the birthyear ("Psycho") set, a '75 Schmidt
and a Diamond Star card of Jimmy Dykes! A note
attached to the top loader told me that it was Steve
Rittenberg's fault for sending him a dupe; I'm going
to have to thank you both!
Andy Cook recently sent out a notice that he was
looking to divest himself of a bunch of 1978 dupes, so
I sent along my wantlist. Well, he sent out 229 hits
to that list, reducing it to 152 cards left! Wow,
that was a lot more than what I was expecting.

Giant of his HOMer Johnny Callison. But this is a variation, wow it's
autographed by the great man!! I know what a treasured card this is for
Rick so that makes it really special here. And Rick gives me a little
baseball history lesson by telling me that Johnny got to play RF in the
64 All-Star game because Hank had the flu. Hank pinch-hit in the bottom
of the ninth and struck-out. Johnny was up next with two men on and the
game tied 4-4. You know it has to be a storybook ending. Yep, walk-off

Mea Culpa. I must confess that I echo Doug's comments regarding
Padre Pat. I've had two large packages of 58T's come my way over the

both instances cards arrived OBC style with no guarantees I could

I too would heartily recommend him for membership to OBC.

For those of us who are movie fans, you might remember
that card from the movie "Mask." Rube Walker was the
last member of the '55 Dodgers that Rocky needed to
finish up his collection. He gained the card in a
trade I remember well from my own youth: he traded it
for a current player and took advantage of the fact
that his trading partner had no idea who Rube Walker
My wife doesn't understand my reaction elsewhere in
the film when Rocky's grandfather (LA Law's Richard
Dysart) gives Rocky a Pee Wee Reese card and places it
on the bulletin board by sticking a thumbtack in it!

Sticker back set. Among them were the last 2 (although the 1972
needs to be upgraded to have the sticker back) I need to complete
a "base" set. What do I mean by a base set? This is another Fleer
set that has multiple different sticker backs for probably every card
in the set, which of course I want to collect. My 2001 annual SCD
does not even list this set. However, it is very similar to the 1980
Fleer BB Famous Feats set (which I also have complete but want more
back variations). The SCD states in teh Famous Feats description
that they are "backed with team logo and pennant stickers, creating a
huge variety of possible front/back combinations." Has anyone ever
heard of a comprehensive list of the combinations for either of these

An amazing last few days in the mailbox. Great cards from great folks.
Thanks to Trader Doug Smith for a 59 and a trio of 62's. Super cards Doug. Thanks.
Thanks to Kent Montgomery for a puffy packed with 16 59's and 29 66's. Great cards Kent. Thank you. These put a real nice dent in those lists.
Finally, I received a monster of a puffy from not-quite-OBCer Fateher Pat Wattigny. His 58's have been distributed quite generously around the group. Lucky me got 69 of them including a nice Roseboro rookie. From my communications with him and all the notes about him from the group, he's got my vote for membership in the group if he wants it.
Thanks again everyone.

As the wantlist gets harder to hit, fewer packages are received.
Todays mail had an Ebay win and 2 OBC packages. Ebay win was a
complete first series of the 1977 Renata Galasso TCMA cards. Postage
cost more than the winning bid I think. Cards were in fantastic
shape. I am really beginning to like the TCMA cards, as inexpensive
vintage stars are available.
First OBC package was a chat room claim from the Fug of 10 1973-1977
Cleveland Indians Postcards. They were all labelled as 1973-74, but
thanks to the big book (SCD) I was able to differentiate the years.
For 10 postcards, I got 1 type card and am now collecting 3 other
years. LOL.
Bob D'Angelo continues to send hockey reading material up north.
Thhis time this year's NHL draft guide. Truly a neat item for a
hockey collector such as my nephew and I. Hopefully he will return
this one after reading it.
Thanks Bob & Fug.

Subject: This Week in Baseball Cards
To: OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com, uvlist@egroups.com.
From: JEdward@aol.com
I've been on vacation the past week so my wife and I have been busy with
little excursions here and there. Wednesday afternoon we returned from a couple
of days at the beach to find a stack of mail, some of it the good kind. There
was a couple of eBay wins and an intriguing little puffy from Kit Okamuro.
Kit sent a nice SCP 1955 Topps card #100, Monte Irvin. Thanks Kit, it's always
nice to add a new name to the IOU list.
Another puffy also awaited my attention. This one was from Matt Heilenman.
I took a quick look but since Matt had already contacted me I thought I knew
what was going to turn up, so we left again on another excursion, this time to
see the arrival of the tall ships into the Port of Toledo from Lake Erie and
down the Maumee River. 17 wood masted sailing ships, quite a site. Tomorrow
we'll head back to the Docks and take the tour. Finally, today we decided
(that means my wife decided) that we would take today off and just stay home and
relax. I got to take a closer look at that puffy from Matt-Man... A 1965
Topps, a true Tipton for sure, 64 cards from the 1980 set, but wait, there's more,
however if you don't like to read about post 1980 cards then you may want to
stop here. 1981 Topps #255 Mark Littell, the last card I needed in that set!!!
1988 Topps Dave Cone and Garth Iorg, the last two needed for that set!!!
1987 Topps Kirby Puckett, Ragael Palmeiro, Bip Roberts and Cal Ripken which
finishes that set!!! Eight 2001 Topps cards leaving just 16 to go on that set; 2002
Topps, again the last two needed to finish the set!!! And finally 22 2003
Topps cards. That's got to be a record, one puffy that finished off four sets.
All I can say is Matt, you the Man - Matt Man!!! Da-da-da-da, da-da-da-da,
Matt-Man. Da-da I hope I can stop that pretty soon.
OBC, it's an attitude
