To: obc-thanks@yahoogroups.com From: Chris Stufflestreet True to his word, LARRY TIPTON sends me his upgraded '65 Joe Morgan/Sonny Jackson RC. While at a show this weekend, he upgraded the card for five bucks and offered to send his old one my way. At the time, he said to me that "that Morgan card is one of the worst cards in my collection." Considering the whole OBC "Tipton" phenomena, I imagined a terrible card. Don't get me wrong...I have no problem with low-condition cards; I have a bunch of them in my 1958 Topps (my "Dog Pound") set-in-progress. I'm proud to add anybody's beater to my collection. The card is truly a "Tipton Mint." One corner rounded, two corners layered, and one corner torn off. Creases show up like a raod map over Morgan's photo, but only a couple of minor creases appear over Jackson (The owner before Larry must not have been a Reds fan). The back of the card has been personalized as well. Somebody scratched Morgan's stats out with a pencil (again, probably not ford of the Reds) and did some kind of math problem with Jackson's minor league doubles total. I can now take card #...actually, I'm not certain, because that was the corner that had been ripped away...off my '65 wantlist. Thanks Larry. It may not sound like I'm saying it, but Morgan's RC has its own place of honor among the motley crew that makes up up '65 set-in-progress. To: OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com From: XTrJmx@aol.com Hi all... While many of you may not consider the mailing of trading cards to be a Pagan ritual, I contend that it is... at least when there's a terrific '65 of Jose Pagan included! Guru also tossed in a trio of other '65s, a pair of '63s, and a lone '64 of Bobby Bragan. One of the other '65s was of former Twin Lenny Green, sporting Red Sox colors, that made me feel great. In every card I'd seen of Lenny in a Twins uniform, he looked extraordinarily dour, like the photographer had just told him that opening day in Minnesota would sport temperatures in the low teens... below zero. Well, he doesn't look much happier in the Red Sox colors, so now I can stop feeling that it was something personal against us Minnesotans. Then again, maybe the expression is just frozen on his face. Anyway, it's great cardboard of great players and a really nice note enclosed as well, and it just doesn't get better than that. Thanks very, very much Larry... hope you have a blessed 4th! A second envelope graced my mailbox this week... a scintillating stamped sensation from Linda Fitak. Besides the always-collectible envelope, Linda sent a pair of '63s and an awesome single of Jim Busby from the best post-war set on the universe... the '53 Bowman color cards. AWESOME!! Along with the kind cards for me, Linda added a cool card of Shawn Green for my daughter. While looks can be deceptive, I don't think Shawn is any relation to the aforementioned Lenny Green. I know what a treasured card this is for Rick so that makes it really special here. Johnny was up next with two men on and the game tied 4-4. You know it has to be a storybook ending. Yep, walk-off dinger! As Mel Allen would say, "How about that Folks!" From: JEdward@aol.com I've been on vacation the past week so my wife and I have been busy with little excursions here and there. Wednesday afternoon we returned from a couple of days at the beach to find a stack of mail, some of it the good kind. There was a couple of eBay wins and an intriguing little puffy from Kit Okamuro. Kit sent a nice SCP 1955 Topps card #100, Monte Irvin. Thanks Kit, it's always nice to add a new name to the IOU list. Another puffy also awaited my attention. This one was from Matt Heilenman. I took a quick look but since Matt had already contacted me I thought I knew what was going to turn up, so we left again on another excursion, this time to see the arrival of the tall ships into the Port of Toledo from Lake Erie and down the Maumee River. 17 wood masted sailing ships, quite a site. Tomorrow we'll head back to the Docks and take the tour. Finally, today we decided (that means my wife decided) that we would take today off and just stay home and relax. I got to take a closer look at that puffy from Matt-Man... A 1965 Topps, a true Tipton for sure, 64 cards from the 1980 set, but wait, there's more, however if you don't like to read about post 1980 cards then you may want to stop here. 1981 Topps #255 Mark Littell, the last card I needed in that set!!! 1988 Topps Dave Cone and Garth Iorg, the last two needed for that set!!! 1987 Topps Kirby Puckett, Ragael Palmeiro, Bip Roberts and Cal Ripken which finishes that set!!! Eight 2001 Topps cards leaving just 16 to go on that set; 2002 Topps, again the last two needed to finish the set!!! And finally 22 2003 Topps cards. That's got to be a record, one puffy that finished off four sets. All I can say is Matt, you the Man - Matt Man!!! Da-da-da-da, da-da-da-da, Matt-Man. Da-da I hope I can stop that pretty soon. Also gathered in the raid, 4 65's, 2 were from the nose bleed section, 5 66's and a SCP from 1962. Thanks Matt! RICHARD KIMBALL-Fug took my breath away. Shortly after we introduced ourselves, a screwdown holder came flying in from the next table. As I fumbled to pick it up from the floor(my normally sure handedness must have been on vacation), I noticed it was from one of the only 2 sets I am working on from the UV era. It was from the 89 UD set. It was the key card in that set, the Griffey Jr.!!!!!! Or as Fug said, you can now consider that set finished. WOW!!!! I think he enjoyed watching my jaw hit the floor as much as I enjoyed crossing card number 1 off my wantlist! As payback, I raided his dupes box too. Actually, Fug raided his own dupes box with my wantlist in hand, he pulled 16-73's, incl. 8 high numbers and a Carlton, 23-65's 17 of which were those hard to get high numbers, a SCP from and 66 and 59! Glidden: Spike starts off the parade with a foursome of beautiful 1951 Bowmans, including a very cool Cubbie - Roy Smalley! Smalley was a lot like Jose Hernandez is now for the Cubs - some pop, marginal fielding, and lots of strikeouts at the SS position. Thanks for the great cards, Spike! Dejong: Doug comes through with a 1954 Bowman Chico Carrasquel! Carrasquel had a great name, and eventually a great appetite that chased him out of the bigs and into the booth in his native Venezuela as the Game of the Week commentator. Thanks a bunch, Doug! Thomas: Neal chimes in with a solo blast, but what a shot - a 1955 TV Bob Feller! My big book says Feller was signed for $1 and an autographed ball. I wonder who autographed it?? Thanks for the great card, Neal! Kilbourn: The House of Maxwell hits the house of Wagner with a very sharp TV umpire of A.J. Donatelli! The back of the card says Donatelli was a B-17 tail gunner and spent 15 months in a Nazi POW camp. I would not argue balls and strikes with a guy with that on his resume! Thanks a ton, Earl! Smith: Bring up the rear is the largest package of all from my buddy, Doug - it includes eight '54 Bowmans, a woodie, and a 1958 AS of Ted "The Head" Williams!! Mark knowing the oddball stuff I like helped find a few UV items of interest. I try not to bore the group with UV notices, but this was funny. On my UV link, I have down some Slurpee coins, including a regional issue of the Detroit Tigers. Mark stumbled across a plastic case with 4 Lance Parrishes in it. The only Tiger coins he had. My list says: Need 4 Lance Parrish to complete 4 sets. What are the odds??? Also found some Detroit Lion Police cards and finished 3 different years of that. These have been on my list for a few years. So 7 sets finished at the show. Came home to a full mailbox and a package in the door. The package in the door was an Ebay win of a 1978 All-Star Game program. I may try and work more on All-Star and World Series programs. Foud 2 OBC packages as well. First from the wayward, John Storman, who I thought we were trying to verify wanted to stay in the group with the semi-annual poll. No note, nut a couple of hits to the 1950 Bowman BB set, including a low number! Bill Malson also checked in with a chatroom waiver claim of a 1950 Bowman. These hits take me over the 75% level for teh set. 62 more to go! Also got a package of UV oddball from an Andy Terrick. Oddball you ask? Bazooka, Post, Long John Silver, Slurpee coins, Nestle, Kellogg's, TCMA, Tetley Tea, 1987-88 Fleer BSKB, etc. Again I do not do much with the UV, but I like these oddball sets. He actually finished my 1986 Topps FB 1000 yd rusher subset. I did not kow I had these on my list, but he completed it. Eighth set finished today. Leaving for the National in 2 days. Kent G., Ed S., Steve R., Ken M., Tim N., Kevin M., and I all were able to have lunch together. It was great to be with all the guys and Kevin's wife after a few hours of card searching. I also got to meet Rob Fitts at his impressive Japanese cards table. Thanks to the following for the cards they handed me during the show . . . Kent Goto handed over a stuffed envelope of a dozen 1970 Topps cards with Bob Gibson, several team cards, and several AS cards. Also there were (2) 1969 Topps cards and (7) 1967 Topps cards with Murcer RC and Mets Maulers. Several clutch hits to my short lists. Thanks for the hits, Kent! Ken Morganti handed over a dozen 68s with Flood and Santo and (5) 69s with Kaat and McCovey AS. Ken was also influential in my purchase of a 67 Mantle. Thanks for the cards and the help, Ken! Steve Rittenberg sprayed several hits across my lits with (8) 68s including Gibson, Carlton, and Stargell, (2) 69s, a 70 Seaver, and black beauties of Aaron and Gibson. He also pikced me up a SCD book at the end of the show. Thanks for the variety, Steve! And, what cannot go unmentioned is the incredible tag team effort of Steve and Ed Schott to finish off my 1975 Topps set. It had been my goal going into the show and I started off by buying the Mantle MVP and B. Robinson from Kurt Tourdot. Later in the day at Bill Henderson's table, Steve pulled the Rose and the Bench leaving one card left. Minutes later, Ed bought the Ryan/Carlton K's Leader card to finish the set up. Great work guys! Thanks to Ken, Kent, and Steve for great Chinese buffet dinner, Steve for shuttling me to and from dinner and then taking my grandparents and I back to Ballys, and to Ed for being my hunting buddy when it came to the bargain boxes. My first National was a great success and a wonderful experience. Thanks to all who made it worth the trip. Here's to next year. Brian Dwyer PeoplePC: It's for people. After several months of intense job hunting combined with a feeble attempt to decide whether or not to "really" retire (with a happy ending), my wife and I really needed a vacation. Atlantic City would probably not have been my first choice, but it was easy and matched up with the National. Some of you know that I did make a brief appearance on Friday, but I owed it to Tricia (the Lady Friar) to spend most of the time with her. We just got home a couple of hours ago. I do owe some big thank you's though, and one apology. I ran into a bunch of the guys during that short window on Friday. I won't start to list them here because I know I will forget somebody, but I must have run into at least 10 OBCers, including the ever-present guy with the big hat. As soon as I walked in the door, at the very first table in the whole place, there was Steve Rittenberg hunched over the table and scavenging. When he saw me, he reached into something or other and handed me a couple of cards meant especially for me, an OBC version of the '52 Wes Westrum (ripped neatly into four quadrants and taped back together) and, drum roll on this one, a '54 Topps "Schoolboy" Rowe, cutting my '54 wantlist to only four cards. That was has been a long time coming, Steve - like about 49 years, so you can imagine how much it is appreciated. Four cards to go on the first set I ever tried to collect! Next, the apology. Poor Ed Schott comes up to me in the waiting line and asks if I can guess who he is. Never great under pressure, I say something like, "duh!" Then he says, "What if I tell you the city - Baltimore!" Now I am really feeling the heat. I think to myself, "I know, one syllable first name - Al!" Whoops. Wrong one syllable. When he told me who he was, I could have kicked myself. I have probably done more trades with Ed than anybody in the past year. Sorry buddy - as you could see on Friday, the olde Friar really is olde and those senior moments keep coming up more and more. My last thank you for today is for a couple of cards in the mail while I was gone. Tom Housley sent a '61 Bobby Gene Smith off of the waiver wire along with a minor league traveling companion. All in all, my National experience was positive, though short. I finished my '73 set with the purchase of a beautiful Schmidt/Cey rookie card, and I got to within one card of finishing my '59 Fleer Ted Williams set with the purchase of #63. Of course, the one remaining is the infamous #68, although I am still filling that hole with the counterfeit version provided by Steve R. a couple of years ago. I picked up a few more, but those were the hightlights. I also bought a bunch of dupes so I can try to catch up with a few guys. Hope that I have a chance to sort through those in the next few days. Again, sorry I wasn't more fully in the picture at the National. Maybe that adds to my mystique. Great to meet some guys I had never met before. Wish we had more time together. ================= To: Subject: Andy , Geno , Bob & avails Date: Tue, 29 Jul 2003 13:18:48 -0700 From: "Brian Lindholme" Well folks, the Familytoads took a few days off to explore some of the marvelous west , and the mail piled up during our absence....someone must've been playing eBay again, cuz there were several large containers of goodies in the pile. Fug started me off with a hit to Rocky's 1962 list. Mac Wubben for a stack of 12 count plastic pages for use with my 1950 Bowman FB. Steve gave me a huge box of 1962s for Rocky and a huge stack of 1980 Fleer BB Famous Feats for my attempt at multiple back variations. (Note: I will have many dupes for anyone working on the set - send me your lists). Steve, also provided lots of other hits to assorted Bob Reed with a 1963 Topps and more for the assault on Rocky's 1962 list. Bob also "lent" Ron & I a pass to get in on Sunday (we gave away our Naxcom tickets to people walking in on Sunday). I believe Kent also provided us with some passes as well. It was great to meet 11 more OBCers that I had not met before as well as nice to always see the one that I've met before and you know who you are ;>). It was a great National for me as I closed out a lot of upgrade teams sets and football team sets. The bad thing is I found a few missing cards in the binders that had been marked off already but not in the binder. Sound familiar. Well enough rambling, thanks again all, Kent ================= To: "OBC Thanks" Subject: Thank you Doug Date: Wed, 30 Jul 2003 21:28:37 -0700 From: "Erik & Leticia Greenwood" A big thank you goes out to Doug Chamberlain for a 55 Topps, 3 6's and 2 65's. Date: Thu, 31 Jul 2003 15:02:21 +0000 From: Glenn Codere After many months of fighting them off, I’ve finally had to give in to the deluge of spam emails which are coming into my email account on a daily basis. I really hate to admit defeat here, but I’m getting sick of having to delete out 50 to 60 messages about printer ink, mortgages, natural genital enlargement, prescription medicine, teenage girls who have read my profile and want me to check out their webcam, “You Are A Winner”, etc., etc., before I can even think about reading my genuine emails. I’ve really come to hate the scum that send this crap out. I wish there was some way to fire everything straight back at them in a way that would screw up their systems. Now THAT’S a piece of software I’d pay for!! Anyway, please go ahead and change my email address on your system to read: I’m going to be particularly careful not to put this address out there on the big bad world wide web. It’ll go out to relatives, friends and other acquaintances. My old email address will remain in operation for the moment, but I would hope to be able to close it down permanently at some point soon. My apologies if you receive this message more than once. I’m trying to cover all bases in getting notification of this change to everyone. You may be on more than one of my personal message groups. I’ll be re-subscribing to Mailing Lists (such as the Tigers List) using my new address over the course of the next week or so. SPECIAL NOTE FOR OBC ADMINS: Could the appropriate people please carry out the following for me: Replace my old email with the new one on the monthly Address List. Subscribe me to all Mailing Lists under my new address. Change my email address on the Web Page to glenncodere@yahoo.com (an alternatie that I use for outsiders) I know that this is a little bit of a hassle for everyone, but believe me it’s much worse for me!!!! Would have loved to met up with more of you for the Saturday swap but prior commitments prevented me from attending. But this did not diminish my first National experience (and a hell of a time as well). First OBC'er I met was Steve R. After handing over a pile of '75's for his quest to collect every '75 know to mankind, Steve pulled out some real tipton beauties, including a '60 Musial and a '63 Mathews. Thanks Steve, all will fit well in the boxes! I walked the perimeter of the Convention Center to scope out the field. Ran into Friar and had a nice chat; Friar told me he was deciding which Schmidt/Cey RC to buy. I was at the table where you bought that card, congrats Friar! Then the guy with the wizard hat (that was a tough one to miss - that's next year's OBC hat, right Ken?!) introduced himself and pointed me in the direction of more OBC'ers: Fuge, Mattman, Kent Goto and Ed Schott (after numerous phone calls, Ed and finally meet in person). During the lunch break, I meet Spike, Bob R and George Moore. Also met Rob Fitts and his impressive Japanese card memorabilia table. Went to Kurt Turdot's table and scavenged his 50 cent boxes with Ed, Bob and, later, Spike. Seems like the day went by quick at Kurt's table. I finally took a break around 4:30, then finished the day at Bill Henderson's bargain boxes. Hung out with Fuge and Matt, then caught up with Ed at more 50 cent boxes. Stayed to the end of the show and got a ride with Matt, Fuge and Ed. Matt, I appreciate the ride to Ocean City! Well, back to reality as I returned to work on Wednesday. I enjoyed the camaraderie of all and can't wait until another OBC gathering. Thanks to Doug and thanks again to all that have sent something this year. Outgoing from Evansville has been slow this spring/summer so far. I am sure that I will be able to pick up the pace in the near future and get some cardboard in the outgoing mail. Jim Hatch, who sends a delightfully Tipton of the 55 Topps Ray Boone -- at least, most of it -- :-) Thanks for the great card! The man who chooses to simply be known as GERSH sends along two great hits for the 57 set (including Lew(d) Burdette) and a hit for the 63 Topps binder! Thanks Gersh! (Actually two cards in one - but that's another story....) Now, Woodie, is a favorite, but the back of this card contains some of the saddest words known to Northern Ohio Man: "Traded to Cleveland by Kansas City Athletics with infielder Vic Power for pitcher Dick Tomanek, infielder Preston Ward and outfielder Roger Maris on June 15, 1958." I guess that Maris guy was just a throw-in...... ================= Date: Thu, 31 Jul 2003 20:52:04 EDT Subject: Address list...
