From: Lynn Miller This has happened to me twice now in the past couple of weeks. The first time I caught it before sending Thanks, but this time I didn't. It's embarrassing to announce it and I feel really stupid for letting it happen but I need to clear my conscience about it. I thanked Bob Schaub today for sending me a tough vintage Hank Aaron 62 Topps Buck item. It was still on my posted wantlist and still not-crossed off my printed copy. Well when I went to put it away, guess what. There's one already there. And of course it dawns on me that obviously someone sent it to me and I just plain didn't log it. And I honestly don't remember who sent it because if I had, I would have noted it when I crossed it off my printed list like I do all the others. So I owe a big apology to Bob for having put the effort and finances into getting it for me and I owe an even bigger apology to the original sender for not publicly acknowledging the first arrival and properly taking care of it. So please let me know who you are, privately if you prefer, and I will offer my sincere thanks. The other incident a week or so ago involved Steve sending me a 1970 MLB Stamp of Hank that I already had also but hadn't taken of the list. But I'm pretty sure I acquired that from outside OBC (but then again maybe not). Steve didn't want it back so if there is anyone who has a need for it please let me know. And Bob, I will send the Bucks back to you if you like. Or if you have any other person in mind for it, please let me know. I know I'm getting old, but I didn't think I was getting senile this fast. As I told Steve, I will just have to pay closer attention so that this does not ever happen again. My wants are very tough now and it's not fair to others to make that sort of effort for an idiot like me. I will be checking all my lists at lease twice over the next couple of days to ensure they are accurate now, which I should have done immediately after the mess-up with Steve's item. So sorry again, Lynn ================= Date: Thu, 05 Jun 2003 21:36:18 +0800 To: Thanks Subject: [Fwd: To Bob Schaub] From: Lynn Miller And is this really bad or what? To: OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com From: WMDpks@aol.com As some of you know, I've just returned from sixteen days in Raleigh, NC (actually Research Triangle Park, sandwiched in between Raleigh and Durham) and there were a bunch of OBC packages awaiting me. After I kissed my kids and wife hello, (first things first) I tore into what turned out to be a monster haul of hits to my above-average difficulty want list. Steve Rittenberg went way overboard, as usual, with a significant addition to my non-sports Indians (i.e. other than Cleveland or Atlanta): 9 different T53's Indian Life in the 60's, 4 different T73 Hassan Cowboy Series (Buck Hero and Bucking Bronco cards were about in Nr Mt condition!), 2 R73 1933 Goudey Indians, 4 R773 1941 Goudey Indians, an R701-14 1952 Bowman Television & Radio Stars of NBC, 4 R701-15 1953 Bowman Stars of the National Broadcasting Company, including one of the sweethearts of my youth, a very young and beautiful-looking Audrey Meadows, who played Ralph Kramden's wife on The Honeymooners - ("Bang, zoom, to the moon, Alice!"), 4 R185 Indian and Western Series of 48 (very tough strip cards), 4 V101 Willard's Chocolates Indian Series of 43, 2 R75 Indians, Cowboys, Western series cards, and tops it all off with a "non-nonsport" pair of 1975 Topps Mini's: #1 Aaron Sets HR Mark and Mantle/Wills MVP. This was an amazing package, and if I had come home from a card show with that kind of merchandise I'd be really happy about it, so you can imagine how good it felt to get it in the mail. Steve is the one most responsible for really turning me on to collecting Indian cards, and it's due to him that I'm as close as I am on the T53's and T73's - need less than 10 cards to complete each of those beautiful 50-card sets. Larry "Guru" Tipton, who was actually named after a card grade and not vice-versa, sent me my OBC T-shirt (it's the third best piece of clothing in my wardrobe) and one of the highest of the 1968 Topps Hi numbers, Fred Talbot (at #577, there are only 21 cards higher than him). Mark Zentkovich sends a beautiful 1970 Kelloggs Joe Morgan, which I've been searching for over the past dozen years or so, and as I crossed that one off my list it occurred to me that I'm getting very, very close on that set. Joe Cerullo sends along a 1949 Bowman Wehmeier, a 1933 Goudey Whitehill, and 1962 Post Buhl and Zimmerman. These were all in absolutely beautiful collectible condition, especially the 70-year-old Whitehill in very pleasant VG shape. Since I wasn't finished with breakfast, Ken Morganti sends a bunch more 1962 Posties: Ashburn, Law, Sawatski, Pascual, and Kirkland. Little by little, I've gotten closer and closer to finishing up those three early 1960's cereal sets, and it's mostly thanks to OBC'ers over the years. (I still have the 1962 Gene Stevens from Larry Tipton, who sent it for my type card collection, on which he had typed "You like type cards? Guru's Typed card!") Grant Rainsley uses Evilbay to help a friend sell off part of his collection to pay for a daughter's weedding in Hawaii. I decide to "help" also by bidding and winning 3 1952 Topps BB. It has probably not been acknowledged so let me thank Bama for the `62 Canadian Post Cereal card of Carlton Willey. Some day I will actually post a list on this set (I know - just what I need - yet another set on my want list). Thanks again John. Peter is pleased to have now hit all areas of my want list, not to mention he thinks I've lost my senses to have added Hockey to the list. The trade lives on Peter - Thanks. Finally, Sunday Mike Rich and I got together for "a date with the girls", Mike brought his niece Makaila and I had daughter Kendall and niece Rosie in tow. The plan was to meet at a park, but rain messed up those plans. We ended up at a local bowling alley and busted up some pins for a while. Of course, Mike came with "presents" - the kids got candy and I got a `64 Topps coin variation of Chuck Hinton AS. It seems as if I had the "tough" variation and Mike was pleased to point out that I now have them both. I was nice to get together with Mike (as always) and a good time was had by all. It shows, in the lack of packages coming and going. However, a few OBC packages have shown up. Kent Montgomery gets me started on a couple of new sets. Due to an eye injury caused by the UV nature of the cards, it has taken me a while to say thanks. Lists will be added to my UV link shortly (especially look for 1997 Pinnacle). Gary Mandell dealer scums me a Chicago Cubs program from Clemens 3rd futile attempt at 300. Thanks for picking it up. I would like to remind all members that when shipping publications, you can send them book rate at a considerable discount. Takes a few more days, but can really save a lot of money. I have a few non-OBC trades pending, which should help a few lists, such as my Coke Caps and 1978 Tastee Freez set. Aside from the auction donations, which have been coming in steadily, there's a few packages that have enhanced my own collection. Larry Gersbach sends over two 62 Posties and a note telling me I never added his name to my "OBC'ers I've met" list... along with a self portrait. Larry, I have the photo from the National gathering in David K's basement and we are indeed in it together (although we're on opposite ends of the picture, I'm pretty sure we did indeed meet at some point ) Two names crossed off and one added. THANKS GERSH!! In another faux pas, I claimed a Post cereal card off the waiver wire from Doug DeJong. In my haste to claim a couple of the cards, I inadvertantly addressed my e-mail to DAVE (something I also did in my very first OBC chat way back when I was a rookie.) Doug mailed the card to me anyway. It's gonna take me a little time to get used to all your names... it's only been seven years, right? THANKS DOUG!! Ken Goetsch fires back at me for finishing off his 19xx set with a few hoop cards including an Oscar Robertson from 71-72 Topps - a set that hasn't seen a lot of action, despite there being a couple dozen commons on the list. Well, I guess those commons are still there, since he sent one of the listed stars. THANKS KEN!! Finally, a thank you note that ISN'T tardy, as I just recieved this one within the last hour or so. Kit Okamuro continues his group wide assault by hitting my tall boy hoop set. The list now stands at 20 to go. THANKS KIT!! One quick note regarding the auction. Lynn Miller, Geno, Grant, Trips, Joe Cerullo, Bama, Howard, Brock, Neal, Mike Diamonte and old friend Ron Kingsbury have all sent over cards so far. I'm going to hold off until after the Nationals (and see if we can get any more dealer donations there) before it all goes up on eBay. So if you're thinking about helping out, there's still loads of time left. It's gonna take a while just to go through all the stuff and get it ready anyway. Bob D'Angelo surprises me w/ a SCP from the `63 Jello set. I love the Gil Hodges card Bob - Way Bob Farrell sends me a gem a OBC perfect `55 Topps All American card of Bruce Smith that Bob found in the bottom of a pair of Army boots he bought at a flea market. Then Bob hits the hits and sends (6) really crappy cards from the `76-`77 Topps Basketball set. Names like Hillman, Bing and Frazier - sure to bring on an OBC smile. Like Cool Spike Glidden sends a complete set my way. It is a (27) card mini set of Nolan Ryan put out by Advil and the Pacific Card Company. Too Cool!!! To Kit Okamuro who sends (3) very nice looking `70 Topps Scratchoff cards with Allen, Osteen and Stottlemyre. Way Cool!!! Finally Ed Schott sends off a waiver wire claim w/a `48 Leaf Football card of Bobby (Bomber) Nussbaumer. I think this card is So Cool!!! I have been so humbled by this group, you are all so generous. To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com, OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com From: tply@aol.com Last night was very special at Pacific Bell Park and it was made special in part because Geordie Calvert offered me a free ticket to the game when we met in Vegas earlier this year at the OBC gathering! Geordie his son and friend drove to San Francisco from Merced and I met them at "The Java House" (A local greasy spoon I frequent) to exchange putters we had mixed up on the golf course in Vegas. We then proceeded to Pacific Bell Park, Geordie and his son decked out in Dodger Blue and me and Geordie's friend proudly wearing our Giants black and As we proceeded to our seats (great club level seats) I explained some of the facts about the park. Geordie, Tyler and Donnie now know why the giant glove behind the bleachers only has four fingers. When we arrived at our seats we had the misfortune of having a couple of ugly Giants fans heckling Geordie and Tyler for their team of choice. I must say Geordie and Tyler handled it with great restraint and defused the two hecklers before the third inning was complete by not evening responding to any of the taunts, way to go Geordie and Tyler! The fact that we witnessed baseball history was made all the better because we were in attendance as friends! Geordie I thank you again for the invitation and wonderful night and the old ball yard! I realize you and Tyler was disappointed at the final outcome (Donnie and I couldn't have been happier) but, to see Barry Bonds be the first to steal 500 bases was indeed a special evening made better because we attended together! To: OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com From: XTrJmx@aol.com Hi all... been a fairly rough month here in Omaha. First, my 14-month old cable modem (with a 12 month warranty, of course) broke down leaving me without the 'net for nearly a week. Then just as I was beginning to catch up (last week), my back (with who knows how long the warranty runs??!) went out on me this past Sunday, as I was picking up a stack of '59s to put in my binder during the College World Series. Felt like I'd been hit by lightning and went down fast... fortunately it seems that it was/is just severe muscle spasms and not any structural problems. Been layed up on bedrest for the past few days, though yesterday I was able to grit out an hour of work and felt ok enough to watch my daughter's softball team play their first playoff game. Feeling better today, so I figured I better get some thanks out before anything else happens! First on the Thanks parade is Kent Montgomery, who sends Sarah some very nice Blue Jays and even a few Toy Story cards. She loved both, Kent... thank you very, very much!! Next came a stunning '61 Topps of Ken Boyer from Geno, who hoped it fit my condition requirements for the set. It certainly did, Geno... it's gorgeous!! The '61 set is the only "old" set of mine that predates my joining OBC, before I had seen the light of the Tipton way of collecting, therefore making it my only set that has any real condition requirements. Oh, and as you know, Geno is the guy who *never* sends a SCP... an APBA of Cecil Cooper accompanied Boyer on his trip. Thanks very, very much Geno... been ages since I had a hit on that tough set!! Another long-time friend and collector, 'Bama, sent me a great pair of oldies too... a '59 Jack Harshman to drop my '59 set to the "under 100 to go" status and a great '63 of Tito Francona. Awesome cards from an awesome person... Thanks 'Bama!! Next in the "in-box" was a box from an in-type guy, Mark Z, who sends an 800-count box stuffed to the brim with cool cards. Japanese players for Sarah, catchers for Ben, and a nice handful of heavy hits on my newer wantlists were some of the highlights. What was neat about the rest of the box was that they don't fit into any particular collecting category and will be great for sharing with others. I recently was inspired to put together some team bags of cards for all the kids on my boy's coach-pitch league team and I know I had at least as much fun watching the kids open them as they did in getting them. Nothing quite like kids and cards... Thanks Mark!! Final thanks for the day goes out to Randy Griffin, who sent an amazing puffy to me that arrived in yesterday's mail. Randy hammered my '72 sets... baseball and football!! A page full of semi-high baseball cards included Blue Moon Odom and Graig Nettles, while the seven football cards stunned me with Bob Lilly, Dan Pastorini, Fred Biletnikoff, Gene Washington, and Fran Tarkenton!!! WOW!!! To top it off, Grif also tossed in a '71 of Steve Carlton and a '70 of Brooks Robinson! AMAZING STUFF!!!! Thanks so much, Randy!! Well all, hope the world is treating all of you well. I'll be trying to get something together to send for the Redpath auction soon. I have the books, but was not aware of the card sets issued to supplement the books. Great starter set. I think I am allowed to post this thanks here because of the box it came in. I peeled off the various mailing lables to find this is at least the 4th time this box has been mailed, crossing the international US/Canada border a couple of times. Thanks Jim. I just cannot understand how with a box like this my list got longer (new set added). I think because the 56 Gus Triandos arrived in great shape which i believe was off his waiver wire, however the only evidence on the envelope is from Baltimore Maryland which is where Ed is from. If i am wrong let me know as there was no return address with the facsimile of the envelope. Thanks Ed ROB GIOlA II had some waiver wire which I was too late on claiming so he "found" some 1960 Topps including Jim Proctor which leaves my Rookie set of the 1960 sets down to one big star a guy by the name of Yastzemski....all i know of him he was a lefthanded second baseman for the Minneapolis Miller the yea before :-) thanks Rob for the 60 Topps they were greatly appreiciated. BEN FISHER send me 1 79 Dutch Leonard card and a 1980 Mike Schmidt all star card. Thanks Ben while i aam kind of collecting the 1980 set i havent posted it yet but both cards are greatly appeciated. GARY MANDELL send a puffy package for a little tiny card I sent him for a little Callahan Bobby Wallace, Gary send a 52 Tommy Bryne, he is kind of a favorite with me because for as long as i remember i have had a 57 topps of him so i am stating he may be the first card i have ever owned. Thanks Gary for Tommy and the football cards 64 Philadelphia Gum and the 61 Roberts, and 60 Topps of Jow Gordan which i just lost out on in an ebay bid the the coaches card of the cardinals, slowly whittle those sub set like rob's rookie cards. Thanks Gary My final thanks does get me any cards (yet) but i wish to give special thanks to KURT TOURDOT. As most of you know he holds a special place in my heart as a close personal friend that i have done business with for a few years because of our Minnesota ties. Today he sent a box of 800 cards (it what he said i didnt count:-) which I will be forwarding to Ken along with my contribution to the Rick Redpath Fund. Most of the card are 70's and 80's with a few football and hockey card thrown in, but a bananza of card from Kurt in hope to making a few bucks for the kids. And old cardboard has been qualifying for that MORE category quite a bit lately. I have a large stack on my desk (my wife bought me a smaller desk, thinking the clutter factor would shrink, but the vertical filing cabinet, WITHOUT pendafelx folders holds a hell of a lot of cards....) and the senders need to be acknowledged, with most recent and then stretching back aways....... Lynn Miller plopped a brick sized bunch of '57s on me. Since I am so extremely lazy about updating my wantlist, Lynn just sends a 2 inch stack and hopes most are hits. They are! Lynn, how do you do it, support a family, andmake the rounds so completely among the OBC brethren? Thanks Lynn! Next up is St. Al - who totally puts me to shame by sending '69 Topps FB, 57 Topps Aparicio and a 54 Topps card. St. Al is constantly testing me as he goes from abuse to generosity. I guess it's all part of my training to someday reach "St." status......but I think Lynn and Al are too far ahead of me...Thanks Al.......I owe you, which you probably just love... Semper Fi-Guy Matt Shirley sends along some sweet '54s. Matt, thanks so much! (Matt, ever buy stuff from John Morrison, oldbbcards seller? His letters have 2 inch high SEMPER FI at the bottom....) Prior to him (is that really a May 31st postmark?!) Bama graces my desk with a 'type card' '33 Goudey of Ray Kolp, but wait! It's a trimmed Canadian Goudey! Wouldn't Grantsie like to get his greedy lil hands on this item! Tough for him! Thanks Bama...... And the earliest postmark in my pile (May 23rd) goes to Jim Moleta who sends me a pleasant stack (at least 10 cards) of '57s. Doncha just love color photos of baseball players from the '50s? Thanks Jim, and I apologize for such a late 'thank you'. And as we draw near to the All Star, I must give thanks to the Mariners fortheir excellent pitching and defense, and thanks to all the other times I watch on Baseball Tonight. It is one heck of an exciting year for baseball. May the injuries be few and the close games and clutch hitting strong! BOB FARRELL adds to the '55 set with 12 low-grade waiver wire hits including Al "Not Mr. Mint" Rosen and Gene "Midnight Plane to Israel" Conley. BOB D'ANGELO sends 14 hits to the early '70s sets, including Hoyt Wilhelm, Walter Johnson (from '73) and HAl McRae. Last but not least, ROB GIOIA piles on with three cards, a 1960 and two 1961s. Now that I've finished moving in, I can finally get the collection out and add these great cards into it. Thanks, guys! Take care, I am an avid collector of vintage baseball cards. It was quite a battle to free my home town heroes & there were some injuries to report. Freehan, Wickersham and "General" Mayo were relatively unscathed with Kaline and Lolich sustaining Tipton 3 level injuries. Sparma and Wood were less fortunate with level 5 and 6 injuries. As for the dreaded Indians and Braves they also have some injuries and are, by rules of battle, POWs. I will release them to any to OBCer who would like to give these wounded warriors a home. The gentleman handed me two envelopes. One was a bill (that one came really quick!), but the other one carried a familiar Canada postmark. I realized right away that PAUL BIGGS had sent me some 1966 Topps cards from his recent waiver wire. Eight '66s in all, including Dick Allen, Ron Swoboda and a post-pinstripes Ralph Terry. But he wasn't done yet; to sweeten the package, Paul tossed in a few more: two '61s, a '70, a '74 and an 8-spot from '80 including Fred Lynn. Thanks for the wantlist damage, Paul! Returned to a number of greatly appreciated OBC treats. Bob Farrell sends one off his waiver wire of Yankee pitcher Tommy Byrne (56). Bob D'Angelo sends a 54 Bowman Presko from his air-conditioned card room. Mr. Chamberlain puts me further into his debt with a four pack. Three 1956s and a well-loved 53 Suitcase Simpson. James Moleta is pushing me to list another set with a seven card starter from the 1975 mini set. Maybe when Brian finishes my 62 green tint variationset? Bob Schaub never lets up--sending me a much-too-nice 55 Bowman Robin Roberts. Paul Biggs sends a stack of waiver wire early to mid-70s OPC hockey cards. Including a number of cards from the WHA--anyone remember the Toronto Toros of Cincinnati Stingers? Finally Lynn Miller sends a few Senators half way around the world including a 52' Pete Runnels, a 53 Connie Marrero. Joe Cerullo sent over a nice four pack. A 1960 Camilo Pascual started things off followed by 3 Bowmans, Bob Addis and Eddie Stanky from the 53 Color set and a TV of Yankee Allie Reynolds. The back of Reynolds’ card tells us he retired before the 1955 season despite going 13-4 with a 3.32 ERA the year before. Thanks Joe! Kent Montgomery hits my son Brendan’s birth set and includes a few for me as well. A couple of nose-bleeders from 1959 along with a rookie card of George “Sparky” Anderson. George played in 152 games in 1959, his only year in the majors. He did a little better as a manager. Thanks Kent! Bob D’Angelo hits an unmentionble set 3 times. Thanks Bob! Ken Goetsch completes my 1968 Football poster set with the elusive Brad Hubbert. The 16 poster set started with 13 from an eBay lot and 2 more from Kit Okamura. Thanks Ken! It’s been a busy spring with Little League, soccer and softball but things are wrapping up now so I hope to get some packages out soon. I still owe some of you from the NCAA Tourney!
