Have a few days worth of Thanks to catch up on. Last week, Bob Neill sent Sarah a nice pair of postcards from North Carolina's state capitol, Raleigh. Beautiful postcards and much appreciated by my daughter... thanks, Bob. Bob also sent her a half-dozen cards that he reiterated were indeed *hers* to share with me, any time she wanted to. She was going to hold onto them until Father's Day but couldn't stand to wait, so she gave them to me as a late Easter present instead (I love that girl!!). Let's see... there's a pair of Post cards for me, too... a '61 of Twin Pedro Ramos and a '62 Post CANADIAN of Zoilo Versailles!!! Wow! Wait... there's more??!! Four '63s, including a Bob Uecker Rookie card and a great card of the beloved Gus Triandos (the toughest regular Gus, if my recollections from Gus Central are correct...). Fantastic cards, neat idea.... thanks very much Bob! Wish you could have seen her smile as she was giving them to me! :-) A nice envelope from David Skoglund helped brighten my day last Monday. David sent a pair of '63s, a '64 of Harvey "The Kitten" Haddix, a pair of '66s and a trio from '69, including AL RBI leaders Harrelson, Howard, and Northrup. Thanks so much, David!! Great cardboard and always wonderful to hear from you! My son also got into the act last week, receiving a huge stash of 66 cards of catchers, all donning the "tools of ignorance" from the very kind Ed Schott! The group's response to Ben's catcher collection has been nothing short of stunning. In the past month, I think we've taken off over 100 catchers from the list and there's been a bunch of dupes. While trying to figure out how to handle doubles, I've decided I'll just go ahead and keep doubles of *each catcher* in a box (only one card of each catcher goes into the binder), while dupes of individual cards will be sent out in typical OBC fashion. That way when Ben is older, he can go through the box and decide if there's a pose of any particular catcher that he likes better than the one I put in the binder. Anyway, thanks a ton, Ed, for the great "catch"! Finally, today's mail affirms that Lynn Miller must have started up the presses for the '66s, as **52** of these beauties arrived via puffy, trimming that wantlist by nearly 25%!! Highlights of the brick included Boog Powell, Norm Cash, a high number and a pair of needed Twins (including another high number!)!!! Holy smokes!! Thank so very, very much Lynn!! Since my wantlist was so out of date (shameless plug: all have been updated now), several of the cards Lynn sent were upgrades, making the following '66s available. Most aren't for the feint of heart... some true Tipton gems here. 1966 Topps #'s 137 (Pat Corrales, Cards) 199 (ChiSox Clubbers Skowron/Romano/Floyd Robinson) 230 (Johnny Callison, Phillies) 248 (Carl Warwick, Orioles) 269 (Don Heffner, Reds) 291 (Mo Drabowsky,Orioles) 294 (Steve Ridzik, Senators) 360 (Ron Hunt, Mets) 399 (Ray Washburn, Cards) FCFS.... thanks again to Lynn!! Thanks server RAMBLE ALERT!!!) That's right - My friend Mike Rich was on my side of town and stopped by - and you know what that means - it's OBC swap time. Of course Mike just indicated that he wanted to drop off some stuff (yea sure). I always look forward to Mike's return from the Toronto show because he always has a goodie or two for me. Mike apologized for only finding a few on this trip, but I'm not complaining. From Toronto Mike brings back (3) `67 OPC's with Tigers Bill Freehan and Fred Glading and Twin slugger Bob Allison; the `68 OPC N.L. SO Leaders; (5) `70 OPC cards with Houk, Williams, Watson, Jarvis and Nettles; a `72 OPC of Ted Sizemore and a `69 OPC Hank Aaron (YEE-HA!!!). So (11) more off the OPC list thanks to Mike - but that is not all - there was more. Mike also had a hit to my Topps quest with the Murakami RC from `65 and (2) from the `65 Topps Uglies set (`65 Transfers) featuring Jim Bunning and Wayne Causey. An oddball hit to the `68 Atlantic Oil set that I have decided to add to the list, Mike chips in Jim Hart. A special card from Mike's original boyhood collection of Basketball cards is passed my way, the `70-`71 Topps version of Earl Monroe gets untaped from the wall and passed on to me. Finally, I recently gave Mike fits as I uncovered variations in the `76 and `77 Topps Hockey Glossy subsets forcing him to go on this insane quest with me. So he clobbers my list with (17) hits to the various sets bringing (2) of the set to within a single card for completion. I got to check out a recent acquisition to Mike's collection - a wonderful Tipton Mint version of the `51 Bowman card of Yogi Berra. We discussed the charm of the card and how any one of us would be quite happy to have it in our collection. It was a decent buy for him at a local store that he just discovered. It's fun to share some of the "cardboard treasures" that we come across and this one was a classic OBC find. I showed Mike the `48 Bowman Yogi that just came in the mail today from Neil Droogan who wants to trade and says he was a former OBC member. So we got to swap "Yogi" stories. All in all, Mike spent a few hours chatting and pawing through some cardboard. A nice visit that I always enjoy - I wish that more of you lived 20 minutes away. Well thanks Mike for the visit, camaraderie and the cardboard. I look forward to our 2003 Tiger outing (we began talking about that as well - details to follow). BE WELL!!! Wow, I had never seen one before a month ago and now I have TWO, significant progress!!! But now I have a dilemma. I purchased a Kahn's on eBay little over a month ago and showed the picture on Ramblings and sought advice on identifying the year. Thought we had that one identified as a 68. But Ken's is a different pose. So they can't both be 68's :-) My SCD falls way short in making any kind of distinction in helping identify the differences in Kahn's cards, other than to say you need to collect all the cards and compare the poses. To What!!! If there is anyone who has knowledge or a reference on how to properly identify certain years of Kahn's, please let me know. In the meantime I've arbitrarily given credit for hits to the 68 and 69 edition, pending further analysis. Maybe psychoanalysis, this will drive me nuts I know. So thanks Ken for another terrific hit, I'll never catch up (sigh). And Griz graces me with some oddball golf items, one of which is a beautiful first day issue of a Bobby Jones silk print on the envelope, stunning!! Thisis a high-grade example of Mr. Spahn's prominent proboscis. Each time I see a Spahn card, I'm reminded of meeting the Lefty Legend in Cooperstown, 1995. He said to me, as he was shaking hands with passerbys "I feel like a freakin politician !!" I also heard a great story about Warren from a card dealer in NY once. It seems that Warren was waiting with this guy at a hotel bar for a ride to theairport. He was downing Heineken's when he noticed a donation jar on the bar for an ill child. He soon started signing Heineken labels, charging thepatrons $5 each, which he stuffed into the jar for the kid. I heard that this impromptu signing session lasted until the jar was stuffed and Warren had bottles all over the place...he didn't want to leave, and almost missed his flight !! Great story!! Ken came up with a 54 Bowman SCP. Peter Iversen found 22 from 54 Bowman for me plus a 53 Bowman & some team St. Al Cummings gave me several 1980 OPC cards, 1965 Embossed cards (including Willie Mays) From Geordie Calvert are a few team cards. From George Hay are 5 from 1954 Bowman. Brett Domue let me rifle through his dupes and I came up with about a dozen embossed cards, 3 Peel-Offs and many Kelloggs. Josh Levine found a T205 Wagner in his box for me. I think this card is one of the hardest to find in any shape. Ray Luurs gave me a neat non sport set about the Japanese invasion of Pearl Kit Okamuro gave me a few cards from the 1967 non sport set Who Am I? which are better than any of the cards I had previously. Kit also traded me several Kelloggs cards I needed. And he tossed in a Ken Harrelson pin and Dean Chance pin (that I will forward to Bob Reed). Todd Knowles found a 53 Bowman Ralph Kiner plus a 52 Topps black back for me. Then he tossed in a 72-73 Kareem Abdul Jabbar!! I also pulled some cards (embossed, bowmans and Kelloggs) from the dupes boxes of Josh Levine, Ray Luurs and Rick Ellison. Thanks to all for the cards. I do know Steve Rittenberg gave me a 1942 Sporting News that polled 100 former stars and managers and asked who was the greatest player ever. 60 named Cobb. 17 Wagner, 11 Ruth. No one else got more that 2 votes. It was great to meet Ray, Kit, and Geordie for the first time, as well as renewing friendships with 14 other guys. Thanks everyone for the cards. The people I remember what they gave: PETER IVERSON along with STEVE RITTENBERG and I am sure a few others attacked my 60 set so badly that i went from needing 389 cards to 215 in a matter of a few minutes. I think they help diminsih my 57 set also as those two sets were beseiged. BTW this isnt a complaint :-) but I must admit for the first time it was a bit overwhelming. GEORDIE CALVERT who gave me a 60 Al Kaline GENO WAGNER who gave a me a bunch of cards but a 63 Jim Bouton really sticks out . It almost glows in the dark compaired to to restr of my set. He also made a deal to take Bert Blyleven with him when he goes out in space so he like Bill Lee can be a Space man:-) In a business tranaction STEVE lowered my 52 want list five or six more along with a 60 Mantle and KIT OKAMURA was relieved of a 62 Mays along with making several trades through dup box. JOSH LEVINE dup box gave a few 62 which i will start working on soon. All I can say guys is I am glad this is a long weekend because it may take me that long that long to get my wantlist up to date. Thanks goes out to MIKE HAIR for the ribs and the golf. RICK ELLISON for find yet another sport i suck at in Half Rubber. (It didnt stop me from particpating or wanting another shot at it next year) ST. AL and the rest for carting me around LV. It might be noted Al was the only one I rode with who didnt get lost although if they had giving Rick a street that actually existed in Las Vegas we would of got lost there either. Some of the humorous times still have me rolling Like the propsed trade between TODD KNOWLES and myself. His 13 year old daughter for my 15 year old son. ( I still think i took him) DAVE KOLENDA asking Rich the card deal for a rare baseball that Bob Feller touched and didnt autographed. STEVE for my 1952 Giant Topps Mickey Mantle card witht the blank back. Still working at getting it into the binder Except for Ken who I met last year at SABR nationals everyone there will be added to the people i have met list Before I leave if everyone has a minute or so in next few weeks could you log on to WWW. sabr.org and take the survey of the future of baseball. I apologize in advance if I miss out on anyone or credit the wrong stuff to the wrong person, but it was a little hectic trying to pass out cards and stuff down ribs ;-) The first stack comes from Steve Rittenberg, who helps pay off the room we shared with a trio of T205's including one short print. Also added into the pile were some shiny silver cards that unfortunately were the only shiny silver things I kept from last weekend :-( Steve also handed out (to just about everyone present) a basketball digest with Wilt on the cover. THANKS STEVE!! Geordie Calvert handed over a 1968 SI featuring Ted Williams on the science of hitting on the cover. Geordie added in a few tall boy hoop cards including Pat Riley to bookmark the pages. These coupled with my one last minute purchase at the card shop in Vegas bring that set very close to completion. THANKS Todd Knowles replaces a card that has been missing from my collection for several years now. When I first joined the group, I had a single T205 (which at the time, I didn't even know WAS a T205). Not wanting anything to do with a pre-war set, I sent it out to someone in the group who was actually working on the set at the time. Now John Lush has returned to Everett showing some signs of age from his six or seven year trip THANKS TODD!! Peter Iversen knocked off a pair of 1963 Posts from my list and added a Jello (probably by accident) to fill a spot in the binder for the time being. THANKS PETER!! Josh found a SCP T205 hit to my list in the form of Louis Criger. THANKS Big Al handed over the mother lode of Post cereal cards which really dented my 1962 list. I'm sure glad he didn't get lost on the way to bringing these to me. Yogi, Roberto and Brooks were in there! THANKS AL!! OK, now I have a 'mystery envelope' containing a SCP T205 and my former Vegas 'brush with greatness' guest - Danny Cater. THANKS TO (mystery man #1)!! Next up in the pile is 5 cards from the 1963 set which I'm crediting to Geno. This marks the first time in probably five years that Geno gave me cards without an APBA card in there somewhere. (Trust me, I looked to see if there was one hidden in there somewhere). Brooks, Cepeda, Billy Williams and a couple from the upper tiers get crossed off my list. THANKS GENO!! The last pile is five more Posties featuring Kubek, Colavito, Santo and Clemente from 1962 plus a '63 Brandt (how'd he get in there?) I've got it narrowed down to about 7 people that might've added this to my collection. THANKS (mystery man #2)!! Non-cardboard thanks go out to the following: Mike Hair - for cooking up yet another batch of tasty ribs. These must've been the best yet, as I think I ate them too fast this year and spent the next hour or so on the couch with a sore tummy. Mike also organizes all the eVents and sees that things run smoothly - the kind of behind the scenes work that leaves the rest of the gang free to just enjoy the weekend. THANKS MIKE!! Steve Rittenberg - for splitting the cost of the hotel room and buying dinner at Hooters among other things. I once again enjoyed the pleasure of your company (at least in the few times we actually ran into each other ) THANKS Peter, Geordie, Josh, David and Doug - for providing transportation at various times throughout the weekend. THANKS GUYS!! Rick Ellison - for hosting a great anniversary party, which was just what I needed to unwind at the time. THANKS TRIPS!! Lastly, thanks to all those mentioned above as well as Joel, Ray, Kit, Brett, George and David (hope I didn't miss anyone) for the pleasure of your company. Just getting to hang out with everyone there is worth the trip. THANKS EVERYONE!! More details to follow in a short rambling... probably tomorrow. Last night Mac Wubben stopped by for the evening on his baseball tour throughout North America. After seeing a game in Montreal and visiting the Hall of Fame with his friend from Atlanta, they plan on taking in a Sox game today (weather permitting) and one with the hated Yanks tomorrow in NY. Last night Mac saw a card collection that may not have been as broad in scope as the one at the HOF, but I think it was about as impressive from what I gathered. Mac added a card to it while he was here: a SCP T205 of HOF'er Zach Wheat! Definitely a big hit to that list. THANKS MAC!! In what proved to be a lopsided trade in my favor, I parted with four 1963 commons from my second set to finish off Mac's set. As soon as Mac gets his list posted to the web again, I get my name up in lights. Cool! It was great meeting up with Mac on his trip. I'd go to the game with them today, but tickets at Fenway are WAAAY too much money now. Mac reported that the bleacher seats which cost him under $10 in NY and Montreal cost $38 in Boston. I'll never go to another game if those are the cheapest seats in the place. YIKES! To: obc-thanks@yahoogroups.com From: Chris Stufflestreet Thanks to LARRY TIPTON for sending as short stack of great OBC stickers and an SCP '68 Jim Davenport Here's where it gets interesting... It seems the envelope wound up somewhere else besides my mailbox. I came home from spending the afternoon yesterday at a park grilling burgers and hot dogs with my family to find the envelope stuffed in my door...bent up. The Davenport card didn't escape the abuse, I'm sorry to report. I figure one of two things happened: 1. The fine workers at the USPS have been waging something of a vendetta against OBC lately...first, some envelopes have been reported mangled, and now this. I must discount this theory, because my mail carrier doesn't go to my front door on her regular work days and certainly wouldn't make tyhe trip there on a holiday. 2. The envelope ended up in a neighbor's mailbox by accident (I'll allow that the USPS makes its mistakes from time to time). The unknown neighbor came home from a weekend trip and decided to be nice enough to hand the envelope to me. When he/she saw that nobody was home, the envelope was stuffed into the door...and bent in the process. Interestingly, the modified Davenport card doesn't really look out of place in my '68 set-in-progress. Thanks, Larry. Take care, I am an avid collector of vintage baseball cards. You look up a few cards hoping to identify them. You come upon a few cards that you had been trying to obtain for months on Ebay or elsewhere. And then there is a whole lot more in the envelope than you expected. Today's envelope from Ken Morganti went for the triple crown-- I was expecting the 59 Ashburn and 58 Birdie's young sluggers with a youthful Frank Robinson. I was not expecting the stack of 1977 footballers and was quite surprised to see a 2nd year Payton--then the next card was a Largent rookie. Need I say more--well I need to. Tucked between a couple of commons was a 63 Fleer Joe Adcock--a card I have been chasing on Ebay for months. Then Ken decides to hit my HOMer list with a 1956 Yankees team card--that has Jim Konstanty hiding on the second row. Finally I have to go to the Standard Catalog to figure out that the other two cards in the puffy were 1952 Parkhurst cards--adding something to my type list. Woohoo, another OBC milestone :-) And I have plenty of them to be so thankful for and believe me I am. What a terrific group of people we have here. The daily random acts of kindness and the obvious joy they bring are what keeps me in the old lineup and I'm extremely happy to be part of it. So thanks Ron for doing something only we OBCers understand and can truly appreciate, at both ends. Special thanks to all for getting in on the Rick's Kids Foundation Drive. Sorry if I was a little pre-emptive with my Ramblings. I know that there were probably some things in the mill and in time would have come to the forefront for action. I was reminded that many people had other things to take care of like Vegas 03 and the other stuff that keeps all of our lives busy all the time anyway like family, career, volunteerism, etc. I certainly didn't mean to diminish those things. I applaud Mike and his bride and all the effort they put in to hosting such a well-loved and by now most coveted traditional event. And to those that attended and gave up a lot of time to make it such a great event. But given all that it just "seemed" to me that this was just going a little too slowly and, to be perfectly candid, I had feared almost forgotten already. And after all the discussion I can certainly understand and appreciate the AC's position on this. And I believe that their opinion that the general membership can do this on our own is agreed upon by all. The Tresury does have limited resources and the AC has to protect that. Definitely no hard feelings on that score from this little corner of the globe and I would hope from nowhere else either. So let's make it happen. Thanks a ton again Ken for volunteering to honcho this worthwhile OBC project. However, I do wonder why the AC did not get anything started before this which could have included getting everyone involved. As for the treasury, as I understand we have over $2000.00 and the only thing it is being used for now is the renewal of the home page. I see no reason why some of that money could not be used for this worthy cause, after all it is money that came from all of us. I am not saying we need to deplete the treasury but a suggestion of matching funds up to $1000.00 seem reasonable to me. In any event, we are rolling now and I mailed a package to Ken yesterday. I am sure the auction will be a tremendous success. ================= To: "OBC Thanks" Subject: Thanks from Glasgow!! Ken arranged some months ago to have his car stolen, just so this cap could rate a Tipton Grade...under magnification, glass shards and fingerprint dust are visible...DNA results are pending, and the blood splatter expert has been alerted. The best part is that this cap also made it to Vegas '03, and comes to me complete with autographs of all the ne'er-do-wells and miscreants who attended, and I just love it. There was also some very nice cardboard along for the ride, in the form of '56's and '63's, including Whitey Ford. I am now suitably attired for weddings and card shows... Very nice job, fellas! GURU sends some things with the shirt to keep it company - OBC stickers (terrific!) and a pair of 1965's - a semi-hi of Bob Priddy & a high # of the AL rookie "stars" - Darold Knowles, Richie Scheinblum, & Don Buschhorn. Thanks Larry, nice additions to my set TERRY DIETRICK sends a variety pack - a 61 Post, 4 62 Posties including Brook Robinson, and 4 hits to my 59 wantlist, including former Negro Leaguer Connie Johnson. Connie is one of the guys that Buck O'Neil mentions in his book "I Was Right On Time", a great read by a terrific gentleman who I had the honor of meeting a couple of years back. I also received 3 hits to my 1960 Fleer All Time greats set - but in my rush to open packages I forgot whether Guru or Terry sent them. So, if the correct OBC'er can remind me I'll extend proper thanks. Finally, BILL MALSON sends a three-pack - a 1958 Gene Conley & 2 1960's including Yankee John Blanchard. To: obc-thanks@yahoogroups.com, lynnm@piol.net, larry.tipton@netzero.net, From: Mark S Talbot Hello All,

It has been some time since I posted a thank
to the group mail server and for that I apologize.
A whole bunch of stuff has arrived and I have been
up to neck in other obligations and have been unable
to sit down for any long stretch at the computer.
So without further fanfare please allow me to

Geno Wagner completely blind-sides me with a beautiful `63 Topps card of Eddie Mathews.  Of course the complimentary APBA card is forwarded it's Sid Monge.  I am speechless Geno - you certainly caught me off guard - Thanks!!!

Spike Glidden for (2) trimmed wonders that hit
the back variations list for the `56 Topps set.  Al
Rosen and Carlos Paula have now joined the many new
additions to this set since I started going for the
back variations.  I'm about half way there now and
Spike get me just a little closer.

Kit Okamuro slips me a trio of `62 Bell Brand Dodgers cards, I only have a few of these so the addition of Roseboro, Fairly and Roebuck were much appreciated - Thanks Kit.

Finally, on Tuesday the OBC T-Shirt from Larry and Lynn arrived.  WOW!!!  I love the colors, the insignia, the pocket - a very cool shirt.  I also received the much mentioned OBC stickers and they are a welcomed surprise.  Thanks the Guru and Lynn for spearheading this project, you guys certainly got the team spirit!!!

So thanks fellas, it's been so nice to be a part
of this group for as long as I have (my 3 year anniversary comes up 7/3/03).  I hope to get
return things out to people ASAP, but I've been
saying that now FOREVER.  Thanks for all your
patience with me gang - BE WELL!!!!

To: OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com From: XTrJmx@aol.com Hi all... Now that I've recovered (mostly) from my "I can't go to V '03" bout of jealousy and depression, it's time to get some thanks out to some incredible individuals. First off, a HUGE thank you to Grant Rainsley for coming through on a side bet we had on our respective favorite NHL teams. Grant sent a cool videotape about American Ballparks, a neat '63, a '62 of Stan Musial playing in his 21st season, and... drum roll please... a '54 Bowman of my HOM'er, Willie "Puddin' Head" Jones!!! What I think I like most about Jones is that he embraced his nickname to the point of including it on all of the signatures on his cards. Way cool!! Oh, and speaking of way cool, Grant also makes sure that Sarah and Ben didn't get left out, adding a great handful of catcher cards for Ben and a pair of stunning postcards of the capital building in Victoria, British Columbia... truly a beautiful structure and the two views (day and night) were equally gorgeous. As a final bonus, Grant tosses in some really neat decals showing how our northern neighbors remember our loss on 9/11. Thank you very, very much Grant! Next up on the thanks list is Tom Housely, who sent me a fantastic package of "newer" cards (even though they predate when I started collecting!!). Details to follow on your local UV Server channel tonight at 11:00. Additional stories will include how Bob D'Angelo and Kent Montgomery continues to pummel my shiny wantlists... THANK BOB AND KENT!!! Finally, THIS JUST IN -- COOLEST T-SHIRT ON THE PLANET arrives in Omaha!! The Guru and Lynn outdid themselves on this one... it might even make me look good (naw, I can't go quite that far!) Guru also added some of the coveted OBC stickers, soon to adorn envelopes headed all over the world, and a couple awesome '65s... Mets team and Harry Bright! Thanks, Larry and Lynn, for bright-ening my day!! Well all, off to work for a bit, then out to play with the kiddos.
