First he sends seventeen hits for my posted 76-77 set, cutting that set by more then half (highlighted by John Havlicek)! Next, he adds twenty-nine from the 70-71 set (of which I only had one before) and seventy-one from the 77-78 set (of which I had none)! With stars and checklists throughout, this was quite the basketball box! Thanks Kent for both the hits and the starts! Wasn’t somebody in OBC looking for a one armed man? Days after the surgery, the first package I received came from none other than Richard Kimball. He also added a hit to the 1970 football set with Sonny Jurgensen. Hope it wasn’t too hard to part with that one. Your Redskins are looking pretty good so far this year. Thanks Mark! Ken Goetsch knocks off 5 more from the football list. Some nice looking 1970’s led by Bob Hayes and a 1966 Philadelphia card of Herb Adderly. Thanks Ken! But they were bought in the early part of 1974 by Ray Kroc, a Chicago native whose claim to fame was building a massive hamburger empire. He kept the team in San Diego and they stayed in the second division on that coast instead. The Padres were so pitiful during the early months of the season, Kroc went on the PA one day and apologized to the fans for the team's But that wasn't the most memorable thing about the Padres' 1974 season. Topps decided to get on the ball early and feature the Padres as "Washington Nat'l Lea." Thanks go out to: PAUL BIGGS, who scattersten hits across my 1960-77 wantlists, including Richie Allen, Greg Luzinski, Ed Kranepool and both Roberts from the '76 Traded set. TERRY DIETRICK, who sends a box stuffed with OBC joy! Hits from 1954-1975, almost a hundred of them. Highlights include Fergie Jenkins, future Mets managers Torborg and Harrelson, a '75 Steals leaders card with Lou Brock, and a guy who was obviously needled in school about his name...Dick Pole. Had he played football, the FCC may have had a problem if Dick Pole and Fair Hooker had been involved in the same play. Also in the package were five hits to the '69 Deckle Edge set, and all four are solid shots: Rose, Brooks, McCovey, Kessinger and Aparicio. Speaking of the 1975 Topps card showing the Steals leaders of '74, it's interesting to see that Brock (who set the record in '74)had more than twice the number of stolen bases as did the AL leader Bill North...118 to 54. Had North been in the NL, he would have only been good enough for 5th place. Thanks again for the great stuff! Take care, I am an avid collector of vintage baseball cards. I hope you're not too busy right now, this might get large as I feel a little ramble coming on that I would like to include with my thanks. If you don't have the time that's ok too. Let me begin with Greg Conway. Yaz hits one of my two favorite sets, the '55 Topps set with two perfect hits; Bobby Hofman and Chuck Diering. Thanks Yaz. Paul Biggs is next with 8 hits to my 1979 Topps. In an effort to fill in some of the sets that I skipped over I've decided to work my way down through the 70's and fill in the missing sets. Therefore I have just listed a 79T want list and I thank Paul for the first hits. When Rick Svetecz inquired a few days ago about who the Mark Fidrych fan was I quickly responded. Now, that should tell you something there, because I don't usually do things quickly. Today brought a puffy from Kansas with three very nice additions to my Fidrych collection. A '80T that will be an upgrade, a '78T that's not really a '78 and it's not really a reprint. Yes, it's a "UV" card with a little gold banner in the upper left corner which reads Topps All-time fan favorites. It looks really cool next to the '78 Topps and OPC versions as this card has the same layout but a different picture of the Bird. Topping it all off with a 1977-79 Sportcaster card. Thanks Rick, I love adding more really cool stuff to my Fidrych binder. Also in today's mail I recieved my eBay winning lot of 400 1977 Topps cards. That will be another want list I'll be adding soon. Those cards came from Ken Morganti and the Redpath memorial auction. And that leads me into the ramble part of this. Since my ten year anniversity in OBC will be coming up in a couple of months, I thought I'd put in my two cents worth. When Rick declared that he would be dropping out of OBC it was almost like hearing about a death in the family. Rick, if you read this, I'm glad you decided to stay even if inactive. You have always been one of the leaders of this group and I've always respected your opinion. As for myself, I'm proud to be a member of OBC. If you just go back and read the above couple of paragraphs you'll read about Rick Svetecz sending me Fidrych stuff. Our daughter has always loved penguins. Whenever we see some kind of penguin paraphernalia we think of her and often buy the item for her. That's family, and that's very much like what Rick did with those Fidrych cards. How about Ken doing this auction for a fallen OBC member. No, we're not family, but I think we're pretty close, maybe too close as there will be "family" squabbles and such from time to time. I do think that since this group has gotten bigger it has started to become a little less personal. I sometimes read an email from someone in the group who I don't recognize the email address. The main thing that I think has changed is that there are few personal stories. It was always fun to read about the trials and tribulations of fellow OBCers, and following the exploits of sons and daughters little league etc. I would like to encourage everyone to share more then cardboard, and that includes the newer members. OBC, it's an attitude John's Old Baseball Card Site ================= To: "OBC THANKS" Subject: SOME CARDS ARRIVED! He also includes a 51 Bowman of Jimmy Schmitz (I loved his work on NYPD Blue). Thanks for helping make the auction the great success that it was, and for the extra act of 51 year old kindness! Also, thanks go out to Rick Svetecz, who welcomes me with another hit for my shrinking 65 Topps set -- a nrmt Juan Marichal! What a great card of a pretty decent hurler! Thanks for the thought Rick! On a side note, I have really enjoyed the couple of opportunities I have had to chat with some of you in some of the OBC chats. Such events really help an outsider become an insider, at least in terms of getting to know people and starting to feel like you are a part of a community. While we may not always agree on everything (be it waiver wire lists or whatever), as long as the sense of community that attracted me (and I am sure most of you) to OBC remains, I predict a long history for this group. Perhaps in severaldecades we (or more correctly our descendents) will be celebrating our 100th anniversary, as the world series nears its 200th. Makes one wonder where cardboard will be then..... Perhaps once we cross the 2050 barrier, people will look back at the Fleer and Donruss sets of the early 80s as part ofthe classic cards that we currently adore, and instead see the 89 UD set as the benchmark (or as the date that lives in cardboard infamy) . . . or maybe anything prior to the current eTopps craze might be seen as vintage. The thing about vintage is it is never vintage while it is happening . . . and as I start to hear early 80s songs on the radio, I start to feel older, and realize that time is marching on.... and who knows what the future may hold.... (apologies for the slight ramble -- you know how us philosophers can be!) ================= To: , Subject: Re: [OBC-Thanks] Rainy Day Thanks Date: Mon, 27 Oct 2003 17:13:26 -0800 From: "Greg \(yaz\)" It just so happens that I was being called 'Yaz' by my smart-ass friends in Garden Grove, California where I had just moved to from Massachusetts while Donnie Baseball, (a schoolmate of my wife), hadn't hit Little League yet. To: OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com From: XTrJmx@aol.com Hi all... This is a tough message for me to write, because no matter how hard I try, I know I'll never be able to adequately craft the words to express how much I've been touched by a single card. I know I won't, because I've tried on and off for the past three months to get this out, but I know now that at least I have to try. This may be the longest thank-you for a single card in the history of OBC, but I think you'll understand why. One of the quandries I faced while writing this was which of our servers to post the thanks to. SInce it is long, I thought perhaps the ramblings would be ok, but it is ultimately about thanks. Also, the card I'm writing about is nearly a decade newer than usually permissable on OBC's main thanks server, but this isn't just about a card. It's about a life, friendship, and touching others through cardboard. And for those reasons, I choose to send it to the main thanks board, rather than the UV server. I hope you'll understand. The card which has caused tears and gratitude to well up within over the past three months was a 1989 Upper Deck Ken Griffey Jr. rookie card that was sent to me by Mike Kinney. I think even old-timers know that this Griffey kid's a pretty special ballplayer, but that's not the reason why I'm touched. The reason why this card is, and will always be, so special to me is because the card was one that he pulled back in 1989 with his daughter, Kim, who four years ago at the far-too-young age of 17 was, in Mike's words, "called up to the Angels." Mike wrote me and conveyed the story of why the '89 set was special to "My story about the 1989 UD set is pretty special! I think the whole version might be on the Bio section of the website, but my daughter Kim and I had put the other sets of '89 together the hard way- all 4 of them (Topps Score Fleer Donruss). This new set came along and we'd bought a few packs. We attended a small show one day and the promoter asked her to draw the 'grand' door prize. She was 7 yrs at the time. She pulled the ticket, and the promoter read the name..... Kimberly Kinney! The prize was a complete set of 1989 Upper Deck! That was before the 'update' set came out.The people standing around all joked about an 'inside' job, but she truly just pulled her own name! Now that Kim is gone, the '89 sets hold a very special place in my heart. This Griffey was one of about three we pulled out of a dozen or so packs that year. Enjoy!" When I hold this card, I no longer just see one of the most graceful players of modern baseball. I see the overwhelming joy of a precious seven year old girl who's name was called and the even greater glee of a loving father. To be blessed with one of the cards which they shared is a treasure greater than any other on earth. It is the blessing of Love.
