Thanks to Ken for some T206's and a great OBC Hat and thanks to Spike for some early/mid 50's cards including a fe hits to the shrinking 56 wantlist. While talking to Ray's Beckett friend, who despite working for the evil empire ;-) seemd like a nice guy I got thinking about grading and how I might use my SABR metric analytical skills to improve the grades of the T206's Ken gave me. PSA would probably grade them a 1 as all 4 corners had been cut off. However the rest of the card would probably grade a 6 and the corners only account for 75% of the card soooo the true grade of the card would = .75*6 + .2*0 (I give the corners a 0 because they don't exist) 4.5, which I'll round down to a PSA4. I like that better! thanks guys Thanks OBC! ================= To: Subject: Thanks to Ed! Date: Mon, 1 Jul 2002 10:46:16 -0500 From: "Randy G. Griffin" Ed Schott sends a 71 FB Walt Garrison. Hello All,

I have received a number of pakages over the weekend to report to you today as I was away for the
weekend.  So thank you to:

Brian Dwyer - sends me a couple of `54 Bowman cards Dave Williams and Nellie Fox and a `59 back variation card of Jerry Kindall.  Thanks for the cardboard Brian.

Kevin Martens makes sure that I continue to look for things on his list by sending me a (6) pack of cards for my 2002 Topps Heritage list.  You keep surprising me Kevin and I thanks you for that.

Slowly but surely the lists are getting smaller and smaller.  The trades have been great and I know that you are all a very patient
group because you wait so long for my return packages, but they are coming.  Thanks to all of you - BE WELL!!!

Date: Mon, 01 Jul 2002 17:39:45 -0400 From: "Mac Wubben" Well, after being the underbidder on about 15 nolan ryan (and jerry koosman) rookies, one finally arrived in the mail today. I didn't have to buy this one though and richard kimball was kind enough to trade it to me. It's the second Ryan rookie that I've ever owned. The first was obtained in a trade for a complete 1986 topps set back in 1986. Unfortunately, I traded it away for a pile of stuff...with the key card being an autographed 1984 Donruss Joe Carter rookie (eat your heart out Carlos). That stupid carter card was one of the few "stars" I have left from my original collection. Previously, it always mocked me...you traded your ryan rookie for this!...now thanks to the fugitive it is powerless. So a big thanks out to Richard Kimball. Thanks Richard! Spike nailed the available on request 1975 TOpps list with 19 cards; all between #8-38. 19 of 31 numbers, so you can tell he pretty much wiped out that section of the wl. Included Munson, Santo & Blyleven. Lynn Miller (notice the thanks to a Bubblehead the day before the 4th of July; how patriotic of me) answers a want post for a 1979 #6 Strikeout Leader with Nolan Ryan (who else) and J.R. Richard. I also was part of the Bob Reed small mass mailing. The package was the type I love. An eclectic mix of 7 cards. 3 1980 Fleer FB Team Action card (I think Mark Talbot is the only other OBCer to hit this set for me), 2 1963 Jell-O BB - F. Robinson (I was hoping it was Frank, but it was Floyd) & 93 Hinton. Another card that as Bob mentioned is now the same size as the Jell-o cards, ws #224 high number on the 1953 Topps set. Trimmed to be the same size as the aforementioned Jell-O. It does (now) have 4 sharp corners! An OBC special. Another hit was to the 1969 Nabisco Team Flake set - Paul Casanova. This might have been my first OBC hit to this cheap often ignored set. I still need 1/4 (6) of this small 24 card set. I am surprised I do not see more action on it and the Milk Dud set. Also received some Auction winnings from OBC certified dealer Kevin Savage. A 1952 Parkhurst BB #71 (back up to 7 or so in the set of 100) and 10 Nu Card Scoops. I did not need any, they did upgrade a few. I now have some dupes available (including a couple Teddy Ballgame) for the last 3 I need (#415 Richardson 427 Mays 438 I would also like to give thanks to all those who have sacrificed and served our country as we celebrate our country's Birthday July 4th, including those in our group. In the envelope was some old cardboard, including 4 1964 Giants. I don't know who these could be from, so I'm just going to blame Richard Kimball. John Collins does some real damage to my '65 set, with 7 direct hits including Harvey Haddix and a couple of semihi#s. Fellow Tiger fan Earl Kilbourn sends along 3 1970 Fleer World Series cards (1922, 1925, 1939). Condition is OK for me, Earl! Another fellow sufferer, I mean Tiger fan, Mark Talbot comes through with a wonderful package which included 2 1970 hi#s, 11 1960s (including one that looks as if it's been left over night in a smokehouse), 10 1970 and 7 1971 Fleer WS cards, and 4 '64 Giants. For good measure, Mark wrapped everything in a Comerica Park guide brochure, and also threw in a 2002 Tigers sked. Great cards. My sincere thanks to all of you! Glasgow, Scotland ps I think I got all of those right, but forgive me if I got something mixed up. I did read the OBC Newsletter article from over a year ago by Grant just to get educated a little better (we all learn here don't we). And there was a comment made about how I should be happy to have the OPC's since they were more scarce. But to me, I couldn't really say I had a complete "Topps" set, now could I? Anyway, thanks Jeff to your prompt remedy for my lack of attention to detail. Bob Reed hits that vintage All-Time Fav Hank list with a super 63 Post card. I had to do a little reading because I remembered there was a discussion of how do you tell the difference between the Post and Jello issues. For this particular year Post was not put on the card and therefore they look exactly the same. Except for size, the Jello's are smaller and have smaller print. But on this particular card I had some extra help. Coincidentally enough, I'm "tracking" a 63 Jello on eBay. It has a picture of the card. Strangely enough the cards do look identical except for one glaring thing. The picture of Hank. On the Post card Bob sent me, you see Hank close-up from the shoulders up. On the Jello card you see Hank from farther away and he is in the same "fielding a fly" pose, but almost full length. I find this difference particularly interesting. So I gotta get that Jello card for sure now :>) Thanks very much Bob for a truly fabulous (oops phabulous isn't it Rick?) card. Gary Mandell sends me a great upgrade card of Hank for my 72 set. Date: Fri, 5 Jul 2002 23:42:26 -0600 From: "Todd Knowles" First, the ramble. I was saddened to hear of the passing of Teddy Ballgame. Even though he retired a year before I was born, I felt like he was still playing long after his career ended. Second, something happened today for the very first time. I caught a foul ball! My son and I went to the Great Falls Dodgers/Missoula Osprey (Diamondbacks affiliate) and we were sitting just off first base about 10 rows back when the big moment arrived. I never even had to move; the ball was right to me. My only thought as the ball came down was "Don't drop it, dummy!" Fortunately I didn't. On to the thanks.....first off, the Olde Friar sends a waiver wire pickup; a 67 Jim Lonborg. Not to be outdone, Steve Rittenberg makes 2 direct hits on my microscopic 54 T list, Frank House and Don Hoak. Down to 8, and I'm high bidder on a lot that has 2 others I need. So I have a few extra `73's to spread around. I do appreciate the hit to my list Pat and the fact that you thought enough of me to send them. Thanks to James!!! James Moleta sent out a waiver wire on some Topps Football cards which i jumped on and I received (3) `59 Topps Football cards, (9) `70 Topps Football cards, (4) `73 Topps Football cards, (3) `74 Topps Football cards, a `75 Topps football card and (4) `77 Topps Football cards. I have received many packages from Bob D'Angelo recently with cards that look like they are `53 Topps cards but they are not. Yesterday Bob sent along (21) of these beauties and the list is shrinking to respectable numbers. I love this stuff Bob!!!     Bill ships out a couple of cards from the `59 Topps Football set that are just swell!!!  I credit Bill with starting me into internet swapping quite a few years ago as we corresponded via a couple of eBay transactions and he suggested that I strike up a few trades.  The rest is history, Bill I thank you for the cardboard and your interest in preserving our hobby.

Thanks to all - I will be getting some packages out to you all later in the week.  I hope to get back to as many as possible in this run, but if i miss you be patient with me.  I'm off to watch the All-Star game so - BE WELL!!!

As some in the group may remember, I have had some medical concrens of my own for a while now (for those not informed they are not life threatening, just life affecting). As the Dr.'s continuously fiddle with my medications, I occassionally have a reaction or side effects from the medicine. The past couple of weeks have not been the most pleasant with unusual pain and problems. So yesterday I finally decided to call the torturers, err Dr.'s again. Told them the problems and they told me to report directly to the emergency room. I felt this was over doing it, but decided to heed their advice. Not knowing what tests they would run, I called my dad and asked him to drive me. Meanwhile, while I was waiting to hear back from my dad and go to the hospital, the phone rings and it is Mark Talbot. Mark said he called the office and found out I was not in and decided to try and house since he would be in the neighborhood later. I told Mark that I was actually going closer to his neighborhood where the hospital is. Told him what wsa going on and that I did not know when I would be home. Finally got to the hospital and was in admitting filling out paper work when I hear, "There he is" and in walks Mark. Mark promptly drops a Ziploc bag of cardboard (and metal) goodies on me and said they were to keep me company while in the hospital. He also offered to stay and amuse me for a while if I was going to be in the waiting room a while. Fortunately, they took me straight form admitting to a gurney and proceeded with the gruesome tests. Mark took off shortly after handing me the following: A 1941 Playball of Tiger Tommy Bridges ( a prewar hit), 5 1949 Bowman BB with 2nd strike wrong backs, which gives me over 100 1949 Bowmans, 3 1950 Bowman BB, which reduced my Bowman 1948-1955 BB needs to under 300 (298), 4 1964 Topps Coins, 11 1976 Shakeys (first time I got these from an OBCer who did not live in California) and from 1 of my favorite sets, a 1 1953 Red Man NL 15 Ralph Kiner. I hate that they are a tobacco issue, but you have to love the color. An OBCer getting cards in the emergency room, instead of passing them out. Is this a first. Thanks a lot Mark. They certainly brightened a rather gloomy day. For those that care, I am "fine", they put me on another new medicine told me to resume taking another medicine I have not been taking much this year and continue with the others. Anyone know a drugstore for sale? I believe I am now taking 7 different prescription medicines and am so drugged I could be had in most trades. 1 of the scripts is for the steroid Prednisone (which they recently increased me to 30 mg a day). I guess the ballplayers should strike over banning steroid use, or I will be ineligible. In addition I will blame the steroids for my adding 20+ pounds to an already overweight body in the last 2 months or so. That bothered me, but not as much as finding out that my blood pressure has gone through the roof. Normal for me is a healthy 110/70, yesterday it was 165/95. I guess I can expect blood pressure medicine soon. Sorry for a rambling thanks, but I thought the story was unusual. Thanks again Mark. Mike Rich ================= To: "VCT" , Subject: Thanks to? When I checked closer I discovered three 1953 Bowman cards; Sam Jethroe, Art Houtteman and Carl Erskine inside a plastic card saver. I tend to be on the lazy side and although this presents itself as a problem when it comes to thanking people in a timely manner, it has never approached the levels it has recently. It may come as a shock to some of you, but this is the first message I've sent to this server in over a month. My apologies to those of you who have taken the time to send out stuff to me, especially the three below and even more so if I have omitted you completely. In addition to my laziness, I'm also suffering from a chronic case of poor organizational skills. The truth of the matter is that I'm doing this from memory, since I seem to have lost the envelopes in the mess on top of my desk. Anyway, my thanks (and apologies) go out to: Grant Rainsley and Al Crotte, who contributed to the hat fund, bringing the total to $531. THANKS for the help GRANT and AL!! The number was written in pencil on the back by either Bob or possibly Lynn Miller - who Bob claims he got the card from. THANKS BOB!! Before I even opened the envelope to find the cards, I took notice of the incredible array of stamps. The whole right side was covered in stamps from 1/2 cents and up. The back was also sealed in stamps. As for the cards, Linda sent along a really nice card for my 53 Topps set. Also included were a hit to 61, 5 from 68, 3 from 69, and 1 from 70. Thanks, Linda for the awesome package!! Monday thanks to Lynn Miller for another great envelope of cards. About 7 hits to my 1970 Topps list including Aparicio, McCarver and a third series CL. Then, three more hits to my 78 set, to bring that one down a notch. Rose RB, Bench, and Dawson. Thanks again, Lynn for the great cards!! Thanks, OBC. First was a trio of T-206s from Mac Wubben. I had pulled 2 T-206s from my novice collection to help Mac toward finishing his set. He returns 1 of the 2 (Wilhelm), since Doug also got it to him, plus Tenney (with a bad headache due to the hole punch) and my first Western League Minoe Leaguer of Thebo. The Western leagues command a big premium so thanks Mac. Linda Fitak answers the plea for a Steve Swetonic card with the maroon border version of the 1994 Conlon #1163. (I would be happy to get more of this card for Swetonic's relatives). I am getting together tonight with his Great Niece? who I have the hots for. She is not a sports fan, so although her relatives want the card, it will not give me a better shot with her. Oh well, back to the thanks. As we all know, Linda cannot send A SCP. The escorts were a 1950 Bowman #234 and a 1952 Topps BB #140 Joe Antonelli. How she keeps finding these 52 Topps makes me envious. Another great Linda package for me to repay. The Mother of the trde was from Trips. Although I do not believe he has received them yet, I informed him I would assist him on his Mother's Cookies quest with 3 gorgeous 1953s. Rick sends a pe- emptive package of a 1954 Red Heart Kluzewski (a set that sees very little action and I still need some commons) a 1951 Topps Blue Back #40 Vic Wertz (another set with little actiona dn commons needed). Wertz ramble. Vic was a local legend here in Detroit (yes the 51 Topps was a Tigers card). After retiring he started a Beer Distributorship. He also was active with some charities and organized Wertz's Warriors. Every year (January/February) they would take a snowmobile trek throughout Michigan ending up in or near the UP (Upper Peninsula) and raise funds along the way for Special Olympics. The Special Olympics in Michigan usually holds some winter events in Traverse City and they would go up and entertain the participants, etc. After his death, the group has continued the efforts. A fantastic legacy and memories remembered by this piece of cardboard. The last item, is another fav. A 1936 Diamond Matchbook Chicago Cubs (they had their own issue of matchbooks) #7 Frank Demaree (green border version). I so rarely find BB matchbooks and yet they book for so little. I might just start working on these. Thanks Trips and I hope you like the Mother's Cookies. To: OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com From: Mark S Talbot Hello All, I received a SCP in the mail today from Bob Donaldson. Bob sends a very nice `41 Playball card of Ellsworth "Babe" Dahlgren from the Boston Braves. The coolest thing about this card is the Braves cap with the old English B for Boston. This was the first cap that I owned as a hand me down from my older cousin in about 1958 or 59. I don't have a clue what happened to that cap but the picture received from Bob today brought back the memory of it. Thanks Bob for the waiver wire claim, I am very pleased with it. BE WELL!!! I enjoy those Burger King and Coke sets from the late 70s and early 80s. The card came in a puffy, because Brian decided to send 45 1975 Topps BB, dropping this replacement set list to under 200. This is the only singles set I sold to help pay for school years ago and am now trying to replace it, almost exclusively with OBC help. I have tried to restrict assistance to those who cannot hit my more eclectic OBC list. 1 card that I always felt was unique, that Brian included was Herb Washington. A PR (pinch runner). Another Charlie Finley experiment. He really did NOT have that high of a stolen base percentage. But it was novel experiment. Thanks Brian for all the help and paybacks will be forthcoming. Sorry, I guess this means that I will be resending a lot and that I will be missing a lot of stuff from the Servers. Lynn -------- Original Message -------- Subject: Thanks & Egg on My Face Date: Wed, 31 Jul 2002 12:51:05 +0800 From: Lynn Miller To: OBC Thanks First the egg part. I gave thanks to Brock last week for sending me some 51 Topps that in my ignorance of the moment, stated they were Redbacks. I stand corrected. There were 3 Redbacks and 3 Bluebacks. I just simply didn't look at the back of them (don't ask!) until today when I was sorting them and putting them in with the others and well you know the rest of the story. These are so new to me, I forgot that even though the fronts look the same, the backs are different. And it becomes even more obvious when you use the checklist :>) I'm smarter now though. Strange how it usually takes an embarrassing moment to make things sink in. So thanks again Brock for the really, really great cards. And now I can get this one correct. Andy Cook sent me 2 BLUEBACKS for the collection. Thanks very much Andy for the great additions. My good friend Jim Beauchemin hits the 51 Redbacks with "The Scooter" Phil Rizzuto and he is in perfect OBC shape. Great card of a great player, many thanks Jim. And I too am the, probably last because of the long mailing time, recipient of a great group of cards from Jeff Sackmann. Four 67 Topps hi's and a couple of them would be Tipton 10's! Thanks Jeff and hope you're settled in the new digs in Madison and hope everything goes well for you at the U of W. Does this make you a converted Badger? OBC - It Doesn't Get Any Better! FIrst off, while clearing out a box of stuff that has accumulated over the past several months, I discovered an envelope from Jeff that somehow escaped my notice. Inside were three great cards - one from 1970 and two from 1971, including Tim McCarver and a high number. A second thanks out to Jeff for a much more recent envelope which contained two from 1966, one from 1971 and two from 1974 including Al Kaline. Thank you very much Jeff, and sorry for not noticing that envelope earlier! James sent a wonderful assortment of stuff. Included were lots of oddball Dodger cards - some were from Police sets, some from that huge Target set, while others were cut from wax box bottoms. There was lots of old stuff too: five from 1966, two from 1973 (Vida Blue) and nine from 1974 (includinga very cool looking Garry Maddox). Mailed from Atlanta, July 15 and arrived Detroit July 30 was a great package containing 4 1941 Playballs (I now have almost a 1/3 of the set) including Joe Cronin and Red Ruffing. These were the "necklace" variety with the hole punch to run a chain through the cards. 2 1949 Bowman high numbers, including a beautiful Tiger card of Fred Hutchinson and as contrast a Tiptonesque Rip Sewell that was formerly Jim Moleta's urinal cards (for those that remember that waiver offering). Finally, the card that I knew was in the package, and was so concerned about, 1 1953 Bowman Color Eddie Mathews. I am down to 8 more for the set. Well worth the wait. Thanks Brock. As always I will be on the lookout to give youo more appropriate thanks and additional paybacks. The Fugitive bobbed and weaved his way into Michigan with a Chipper Jones Post Bobblehead as payback for a few Bobbles that bounced there way to Pennsylvania. Thanks Richard.
