I have received quite a few trade offers and I will respond to all who emailed me very soon! Thanks to Jim Hatch who sent a pile of 68's for my set, the Mays checklist from 67, and 1 card towards my birthyear set, 1962. Thank you very much Jim, they look great! First, a nice Baker's Dozen package of Post and Kelloggs cards, including my first SGC-graded card, a SGC-88 Rod Carew from the '78 Kelloggs set. Not only my first SGC-card, but my first from the elusive '78 set. The Posties are in the best shape I've ever seen. Whoever cut these out of the box must've been the most careful 12 year old kid in history. They'll put the rest of my set to shame! Thanks Lynn, all greatly appreciated, even the graded one! :-) Last week, there was a 200 count lot of Dennis Eckersley cards on ebay. Being a big Eck fan, I was going to bid on this, but things got busy, and I completely forgot. The auction ended, it showed on my watch list that somebody bid on it and won. Next time, say I. This morning came an unexpected package from an unknown person. Didn't recognize the return address label. Could be something I won on ebay and forgot about? Cracked it open. It's a huge lot of Eckersley cards. OK, I'm old, and losing much of my mind here, but I'm stumped. I sift through the box, find a few slips of paper. The first says, please leave feedback, gives the ebay number, signs it "Barry". Still stumped. I know I didn't win this. Did he goof and send it to the wrong person? Next slip of paper - "hope you can find a few you need, Lynn". Got me again. Thanks a million Lynn. I loved the package, and enjoyed the hell out of the surprise and the mystery. You're unbelievable. :-) Also got my Tri-City Valley Cats season tickets this morning. I'm psyched for Opening Day. Stay tuned for scouting reports from the Class A, NY-Penn league! I'm also still hoping to win the "name the mascot" contest. For a team called the Valley Cats, what could be a better mascot name than "Rally Cat"? Picture him dancing on top of the dugout, PA announcer says "Let's get behind the Rally Cat and score some runs!" Let's play TWO today! ================= Date: Sat, 01 Jun 2002 10:41:49 -0400 To: OBC Thanks Subject: SCP of the highest order From: Robert Neill Mac Wubben brightens my weekend with a great SCP--a 56 Roy Campanella (Grey back, for those with extra whitebacks sitting around :-)). Stopped at several places along the way to check and see if there were any baseball cards around (there were). If you are ever on the I-75 corridor, check out the Big Peach Antique Mall in Byron (exit #149) and Gateway Antiques near Chattanooga (exit #353). And also the Old Forsyth Antique Mall in Forsyth (forget the exit). So I tried stocking my dupes a bit and actually found a few I needed. And when I returned, there were some wonderful packages waiting. Mark Talbot sends an unbelievable package, with cards for me and for Jim Rizzo. For me, Mark sends eight high numbers from 1962, a 63 Fleer (Ray Herbert), a 63 Topps Gil Hodges, a 64 Duke Snider, two post-1980 insert offerings, and seven cards that look like 1953 Topps but are not (smile). Mark then sends 29 hits to Jim Rizzo's 1971 list, with names like Ron Santo, Sam McDowell and a Greg Luzinski rookie card. Wow, what a haul. Thanks so much, Mark! BOB NEILL - sends me three wonderful 1953 Red Man cards. The Barber - Maglie, Eddie Robinson and Gus Z. - a guy who had the chance to pose with M.M. At Gilmore Stadium in Hollywood and even took her out. All fine additions to that birth year set..! Thanks Bob! GARY MANDEL - just sent me some cards a few weeks ago - but he could not stop himself from sending more. This time I get 4 1972's to read and enjoy - I got 3 out of 4 correct on the trivia quiz and enjoyed them a lot before tucked them away in their new home. Appreciate them all BOB WELLS - found a great batch of Dodger oddballs for me - I always appreciate Dodger cards and the oddball ones that you do not see much are always a pleasure to behold and have...! Thanks Bob! JOSH LEVINE - finds some cards in Scotland for me - first batch from there that are not from Glenn. I get cards from sets I have not seen of Shirley Temple, Barbara Stanwick and Garbo! and a wonderful Hoot Gibson card from Cuba..! (found in Scotland...) Hoot, if you all remember, was Granny Clampet's favorite Cowboy Star! These are great Josh - thank you! ANDY COOK - Another 53! I got a johnston's Cookie card awhile back for that Birth Year set (first of these) and now Andy sends me one of the FIVE 19523 Bowman B&W's I need to Complete that set. Great name for a baseball player Paul La PALME... He does not look like a palm ball pitcher on the card though (had they even invented that pitch in 1953?) but a Knuckler... First class HIT Andy! BRIAN DWYER - also finds time to send me more cards - these are Dodgers all - oddballs all - a few from a 1,000 card set that I will be collecting until my nephew has grandchildren - and a Fleer Cloth Dodger Sticker (my first of these).. Great stuff Brian - THANKS! RICHARD KIMBALL - Hits me with a couple of items I do not have - DODGER's and some others who came along because they were STUCK to Calude Osteen - on a 1969 MLBPA Baseball Stars stickers! A full uncut sheet of these with 12 stickers - and two 1969 MLBPA Pins of Maury Wills and Duke Snider. There are MLBPA Pins listed in the 1997 big SCD I have but these are not among them. Those are MFG> somewhere in Wisconsin - these are labeled "(c) 1969 MLBPA MFG IN USA" Anyone have any ideas about this set - who or how many are in it... I would like to open a place in the data base for it and need more info... In any case - Thank you very much Richard - and WELCOME to OBC.>! AL CUMMINGS - Finds a "few" for me... They don't call him Big Al for nothing. I found 9 x 71's including a Jim Palmer card - 4 from '72 that include Joe Torre and Larry Bowa - two 55 TV's with Bill Bruton and another Antonelli card (this one will go in the Van Lingle Mungo set!) and also actors and actors... Gable, Skelton, Young and a Kate Hepburbn card from a Players set that I am trying to complete (needed it too!) Thanks Al for a big package that is quite a followup to the one you gave me in Vegas two weeks ago...! All in all - a busy time for me - to open and read and guess and enjoy! Thanks to all of you and I hope the rest of you are sending and/or receiving something and having a great week...!! GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO!     I was so pleased to see a few packages in the old mailbox this week as the cardboard continues to fly.  Thanks to:

Bob D'Angelo for another in a line of packages that keep my head spinning.  This time Bob send 15 very shiny cards and 12 cards that look just like `53 Topps cards (but they are not)!!!  Thanks again Bob.

Ray Luurs takes me one more down in my quest to reach 1000 with a dandy SCP of Roy Sievers from the `51 Redback set.  This is a great hit to my list Ray and I appreciate it.  I should easily reach the century mark (not including variations) this afternoon at the swap meet prior to the Tiger game at Mike Riche's house.

Speaking of which I spent the evening with Mike Rich, we cleaned up a bit in preparation for the swap meet (but I was not really needed as Mike had already made great strides to tidy his place up).  Mike prepared some burgers and we watched the final innings of the Tiger blow out (11 to 1 to the Phightin' Phils) and we proceeded to throw cards at one another as we talked well into the night about the hobby and our collections.  It was a nice evening and I can report some hits to the list starting with a `69 Topps All-Star card of Tiger Bill Freehan which upgrades the one in my set, to continue the theme Mike slides me a 7-11 Slurpee cup of Bill Freehan, he also presents me with a `67 Topps Pin up of Joe Torre, a `70 Pin-up poster of Lou Brock, six Salada/Junket Tea coins from the `62 issue, a SCP from the `64 Topps coin issue of Pete Ward and a complete set of `84 Fun Foods Pin Back Buttons.  A great evening, conversation and stuff to take home.  Mike promised more surprises for me later today so I will keep you posted.

Well the Tiger game is at 7:00 p.m. tonight and I will give a report on the outing later on the rambles.  BE WELL fellow collector and thanks again to Bob, Ray and Mike!!!

Attendees were MArk Talbot, Ron Perry, Earl Kilbouorne ane John McLaughlin, as well as non-OBCer Rocky Mazzaro and myself as host. I would like to thank each for attending, more details on ramblings server later, and for the following cards: On Friday, in the mail from Jim Moleta was a waiver claim of 7 1978 Burger King Yankees, including Sparky Lyle. Jim thinks he is beating me in getting the 1949 & 1950 Bowman BB from the group, but.... Mark Talbot, comes over to help me clean-up/straighten-up for the get together (great job vacuuming, he is a little weak on ewindows and cleaning toilets) and makes a mess by leaving behind 5 1950 Bowman BB low numbers, including Curt Simmons, 3 1969 Topps BB stamp albums, 5 OPC BB from 1977-1982 and a bunch of 1960 Topps BB upgrades (some were serious upgrades). Saturday was the get together. Ron Perry is punctual and first to arrive, followed by Eek, John, Mark & Rocky. Swapping did not commence until all OBCers were present. Eek starts off with giving me a card of my HOM, Willie Horton, I had never seen before, An Archives card, that the back was of the 1964 Rookie card, but the front was all Horton (no Sparma). Did I mention this card was autographed? Ron Perry, has already pulled for me a 1964 Topps Coin of Jim Wynn, a 1963 Jell-o of #196, the "Original" Frank Thomas. Ron delivers 2 smashes to the 1966 Topps hi number list and then ssurprises me with 2 prewar cards on my OBC list; 1941 Playball #53 and 1936 Goudey Derringer. The Derringer is the forst hit to the 1936 Goudey set since I put it on the OBC list. I now have 4 of 25! Ron also let me pick through his boxes and I found 3 more Parkhurst Hockey from 1959- 60 of Brewer, Armstrong & Harvey. For those that are not hockey fans, I beleive 2 are in the HOF. Before he left on Sunday, I also went through Ron's dupes for some upgrades to my 60s BB & FB. John McLaughlin also had a box that let me grab some 1960s upgrades, a hit to the 1975 list and then let me pull some cards for Rocky (I owe Rocky from earlier trades) of 17 1962 Topps BB. Mark Talbot, who gave me the above hits on Friday, walks in and says, "here". Proceeds tohand me a stck of 14 1949 Bowman BB. I am now well over the 100 mark in the set adn am closing in on 1/2 way. Also Mark had a Ray Fosse Slurpee cup for that collection, a Topps American Pie, again, of my HOM Willie Horton. I also snitched a 1962 Salada coin and a few 1964 Topps Coins. Before Mark left, around 1:30 in the morning, I also was able to go through and pull out some upgrades to my 1960s BB& FB. Thanks guuys for a great weekend. ANYWAY --- Andy Cook pleasantly surprised me with a very nice early American Caramel of Happy Harper, in Andy's most recent blitzkreig of what seems like all the OBC membership. Andy, you are terrific - thanks so much. Interleague play has not been kind to the Mariners thus far as we drop 2 out of three to the Cubbies. Those Cubs sure have some serious pitching to hold Ichiro to 1 for 12 and shut down a lot of the Mariner's bats (not to mention that the slumping hitters are doing so in clumps of 4-5 players...nota good thing). But I gotta say, there is some outstanding baseball going on this year - it sure is fun to watch Baseball Tonight and see all the action, including the Web Gems. Some coffee customers picked me up an old Spalding glove at an estate sale - no name, no laces for fingers. It's pretty dirty and stiff - I'm wondering what the best product is to clean it up...any suggestions? Saddle soap? Murphy's Oil Soap? I've never had a mitt this old, so I don't want to screw it up with some lame product - any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, and keep the cardboard flyin'. So, with no further ado let me begin with thanks to Linda Fitak. Again Linda sends an envelope with really cool old stamps. I collected stamps when I was a kid, in fact I had a rather nice collection. I turned it over to my son and he has it stashed away somewhere. Hopefully, it will stay in the family and be passed down again some day. Getting back to this envelope, it was sealed with a really cool Detroit Tigers stamp, another keeper envelope. Inside I discovered a 1951 Bowman Hal White card, a '56 Red Schoendienst, four '65s, a bunch of odd ball Tigers, a couple Limited edition Jose Canseco cards, a Ken Griffey Jr. card with a picture of Jr. from his little league days wearing a glove that's about a third the size of him. Again, another interesting and fun assortment of cards, thanks Linda. On Saturday I was lucky enough to participate in the OBC Tiger get together at Mike Rich's house. When I arrived Ron Perry and Earl Kilbourn were allready there and shortly after Mark Talbot arrived. Soon cards started to be passed around with many a goody coming my way. Ron gave me six 1955 Topps and Mark handed me another dozen. Earl gave me a stack of needed UV cards with a 1962 Charley Maxwell Post card in the middle of the pack. Now, I'd like to point out that Maxwell is Earl's HOM so it takes an exceptionaly generous person to part with such a card. Mike Rich handed out Jim Northrup autographed pics, complete sets of 1984 Tiger Slurpee Discs and a Photostamp album page. I also pulled a nice little stack of '68 Topps from Mike's dupes. Since I have three favorite Tigers; Kaline, Cash and Fidrych and since Mark has Cash for his HOM and of course Kaline is in the HOF it was decided that I should make Fidrych my HOM player. The next thing I know Fidrych cards started coming my way, encluding a 1977 Street and Smith's Official Yearbook with Fidrych on the cover from Mark. There was more but this is getting a little long, and I'm not too sure who gave me what beyond this point so let me say thank you gentlemen. Also, when I got the chance to go through everything I discovered that I ended up with two of the Post Charley Maxwell cards, so I'll be sending one back to Earl. Thanks a lot Jim for the great cards. Does anyone have any extra pocket pages (enough for the Bluebacks and Redback sets) that will hold these cards. I'll be glad to pay you for them and for the postage. Thanks in Linda for a tough 63 hi number. But of course as you all know that wasn't all. I used to collect stamps so I recognized the stamps from just after the turn of the century along with a baseball stamp of the "Big Train" Linda sealed the envelope with apparently a cutout from an auction catalog (I'm guessing here) of Hank's #44 jersey autographed by himself and a couple of others you might know; Mantle, Mays, Robinson, Killebrew, Schmidt, Williams, Jackson, Banks. Wow! This is definitely going in the shrine. Thanks very much Linda for the big hit and the wonderful stuff on Hank. Mike Rich traveled all the way to Toronto to get some cards for me. Now that's dedication! Well he got some for himself too :>) It's a great Hank Aaron card and I think it's a 1977-79 Sportscaster card. But does anyone know what Saantoja means in Finnish? That's right, I don't understand a word of it! If it means "rules" then it's the other one of the two cards from that set that I need. As Mike put it, has gone as far as a Hammer Homer from Finland to Canada to U.S. to Philippines and who knows where in between. Well put Mike and I'm in your debt again for this really unique card. The mail man had to have gotten a hernia carrying that package. I got home from work yesterday & saw that homungous package lying with the mail on the kitchen table. My first thoughts, it's a late graduation gift for Emily or an early birthday gift for Liz. Maybe even an early Father's Day present from a kid away from home. But NOOOOO, it's baseball cards. I must tell you the whole family is jealous of me since I joined OBC and started receiving these packages on a regular basis. It's like Christmas 365 days a year. I hear their snide remarks & jokes about my baseball cards, but I really know it's killing em. And then your package came, so big & from so far away, I had to laugh because the kids can't stand it. Then when I openned it up, WOW, it's better than I could have imagined. So many old cards over so many years. There were multiple hits on 21 different sets from 1952 thru 1973, 135 pieces of cardboard in total. All stars like Carew, Hi #'s, Team cards. You name it, it was in there. I'm stunned & humbled by the generousity. Words cannot express my thanx for the thoughtfulness. Much appreciation. Glasgow, Scotland ================= Date: Wed, 12 Jun 2002 19:20:30 -0400 Subject: Tiger Outing - An event to be thankful for To: JEdward@aol.com From: Mark S Talbot Hello All,

I wanted to add my own two cents worth to the messages you have heard from Mike Rich, Ron Perry, Earl Kilbourn and John McGlothlin.  It was truly a memorable event.  I would like to thank publicly Mike Rich for organizing the event and making his home available for us to meet.  He also fed me twice in a 24 hr. period and he is a pretty good cook.  He could do a commercial for the George Forman grill, or at least be a very credible spokes person.
Thanks to this meeting I am thankful to have met two more OBC veterans in Ron and John.  What everyone says is true - it was like a family reunion, like we all knew each other for a lifetime.  There were many stories to swap, tons of laughs, and a lot of fun.  Speaking of swapping there were cards as well - so let me tell you what I brought home:
John felt badly because he didn't bring a whole bunch of cardboard to swap but I found some things from my list in his box of goodies.  I captured (3) `54 Bowman cards, a `52 Topps upgrade and a very large stack of Topps UV items that will do considerable damage to those list.  Moreover, it was just great to listen to some of John's stories about "the good old days" of OBC.  The cardboard was appreciated but the time we chatted - priceless!!!!
Earl sat to my left during our swapping session and he handed over a very nice addition to my Norm Cash (HOM) collection.  It comes from the Topps Archives Best Years set and is an authentic game-used bat card from "Stormin Norman".  Now I know that this kind of stuff has many detractors (myself included), but it is my HOM guy so I'm going to be a bit hypocritical here and say that I love this item - it will be proudly displayed in my Norm Album.  EEK also sets me up with a UV starter set to be named else where.
Ron sat to my right in the swap session and again at the Tiger game.  We got a great chance to get to know one another in between pitches and I enjoyed this opportunity immensely.  Ron handed me a stack of cards which had a very nice `65 Topps card of Don Larsen bringing me ever so close to the century mark.  Also in the stack were a couple of Post Cereal cards, one from `62 and the other from `63.  There were a number of football hits as well, then Ron hands over the dupe box and says "take what you need" - so I did.  So here is what I pulled: (10) `56 Topps back variations, (1) `71 Topps Super card, (12) `70-`71 Topps Basketball cards, (1) `55 Topps FB card, (6) `58 Topps FB cards, (1) `59 Topps FB card, (5) `60 Topps FB cards, (7) `61 Topps FB cards, (10) `62 Topps FB cards, (13) `64 Philadelphia FB cards, (11) `65 Philadelphia FB cards, (22) `66 Philadelphia FB cards, (9) `67 Philadelphia FB cards, (1) `67 Topps FB cards, (3) `68 Topps FB cards and (8) `71 Topps FB game cards.  To say the least, an impressive bunch of hits to my
Now to the host of this session - Mike Rich.  Our last session together was a bit abbreviated by the time so Mike started me out with a few offerings, an autographed Jim Northrup pic, a set of `68 Tiger slurpee discs and then a big old box of stuff (details to come).  I told Mike that when I was done looking over the box Ron had stuffed in front of my nose I was going to savor the treasures he had found for me.  But Mike couldn't wait to bowl me over - so he asks "How many more Topps cards do you need to hit 1000", and I answered that I now needed 1 card so he sends over a `52 Topps Carl Erskine card and says "Okay, now you are at 1000 ------ and..........     you know the rest of this story if you have been at any OBC swap meet.  Mike hands over card after card from the list with a `51 Redback, (11) additional `52 Topps, (2) `53 Topps, (3) `55 Topps, (3) `59 Topps back variations, (4) `60 Topps back variations, a `64 Topps, `65 Topps and a `75 Topps mini - for a total of 28 Topps baseball card hits, making Mike my cardboard Hero for the summer of `02.  Now the box Mike amassed was something else as well - here what awaited my purview: Kareem and Moses from the `76-`77 Topps Basketball set, (8) `81-`82 Topps Basketball cards, (2) Topps scratch-offs, (2) `71 Fleer WS cards, a Fleer Wildest Plays and a Fleer Famous Feats card, (18) Shakey's Pizza cards, (9) Kellogg's cards, a `65 OPC card of "the original" Frank Thomas, (3) `66 OPC cards, (6) `68 OPC cards, (6) `69 OPC cards, (2) `70 OPC cards, (223) `74 OPc cards and a `77 OPC cards of Nolan Ryan.  There was some football in the box with a `61 Topps, (5) `72 OPC hits, (4) Topps checklist variations, (2) Wonder bread Hits, (59) `75 Topps cards, (11) `76 Topps cards, (140 `79 Fleer cards, a `79 Topps, a `80 Topps, (7) `81 Fleers, (32) `83 Fleers, a `83 Topps, (22) `86 Topps, (9) `87 Topps and a `88 Topps.  Now that would be enough to bowl anybody over - so it was off to the game and time for the head to clear from all this generosity.  But after the game Mike presented me with a Jim Price autograph card and a Nick Libett autographed Red Wing card and it was TV time.  After the subsequent Red Wing's 3 overtime period hockey game victory - Mike sat down with me to point out the finer points of `62 Topps green tint collecting and of course he had to fill every hole he could in my `62 binder that I had brought over simply to determine which variation I was in need of.  So by the end of the night Mike had clobbered me with all of the above mentioned items and (25) `62 Topps green tints and at least (2) `62 regular issues.  Among the green tints were the tough to find Moon, Yost, Willey, Kunkel and Angels Team.  Ron's head was spinning now - it was 2 a.m. and the cardboard was still flying - Mike just looked at Ron and said "Don't worry, we trade like this all the time".  Mike pulled upgrades from my Football dupes and "cleared the seats" by 2:45 a.m.  - arriving home a little after 3 in the morning.
Mike certainly was a wonderful host, gracious and very generous.  Mike I will repay your kindness - and you know what I mean - Thanks to you and your guest Ron, EEK, John and non-OBC'er Rocky (who did the driving) for a very memorable day.  What a blast!!!  I agree that we WILL do it again.  BE WELL!!!

Another quick (I promise) announcement about incoming packages for the past few days.  I have received cards from:

Bob Covello who attacks the list with waiver wire claims of (3) `56 Topps back variations and a `41 Playball of James Roberson Brown.  Great Cardboard Bob!!!

Linda Fitak comes through again with a waiver claim of `52 Topps Eddie Robinson, a `53 Bowman color of Willie Jones, a Target Dodger of Jackie Warner and the same Jackie warner from the `33 Goudey issue.  It was accompanied by a very nice note and as always a real pleasure to get a package from Northridge.

Brock Hattox with a SCP from the `55 Topps set.  Inside a card from Brock's NSI corp is a very nice Warren Spahn upgrade - Many thanks Brock!!!

Non OBCer Ralph Genova (many of you may know Ralph) concludes a recent trade with me by sending me a `52 Topps card of Dave Philley, a `50 Bowman of Sherm Lollar, a `51 Bowman of Curt Simmons, a `57 Topps card of Elston Howard, a `62 Topps card of Marris and Cepeda as the Home Run Kings, a `64 Topps Stand-Up of Earl Battey, a `71 Topps scratch-off of Harmon Killebrew, a `70 Kellogg's of Bob Gibson and a `76 Kellogg's of Greg Gross.

Finally, one more item from Mike Rich I forgot to mention. A very cool 14x19 frameable photo - matted on fiberboard of my Hero "Stormin' Norman Cash".  I will be framing this baby and placing it in the downstairs shrine to my man - Norm Cash!!!  Thanks again

To all my collecting partners out there - Thanks for getting me below 1000 cards for the regular run of Topps cards 1951 - 1980.  I have some work to go to include the variations (the `62 Green Tints, thanks to Mike Rich, will be added tonight) but I still may make substancial progress with your continued help.  I will be getting more stuff out to you so keep your eyes to the box.  BE WELL!!!!

Since I only put in a couple Mills worth previously, I thought I would add the rest of my two cents worth. First, I want to echo the sentiments of the others, and again thank Mike for a great job hosting. The directions he provided were excellent and I arrived a fashionable 15 minutes late for the scheduled 2:00 start. Mike welcomed me into what I later would discover was a baseball card and memorabilia museum and storage area masquerading as a house. Mike introduced me to Ron Perry bringing to three the number of OBCers I had met to that point. The three of us were chatting like we were old friends when the first of several call came from John McLaughlin. "Mike, this is John, we have a problem here." Keeping his cool and in a reassuring tone Mike responded "John, Mike here, I have Ron and Earl standing by, give me your coordinates and I'll bring you in." Preliminary instructions were provided and after a tense black-out period John finally reconnected and was expertly guided in by Mike. John was warmly welcomed, introduced, and immediately provided with something for hydration. Since Mark had been to Mike's previously, we took the tour without him. There were books, cereal boxes, glasses, cups, games, all manner of novelty items, but mostly cards. To give a sense of the enormity of his collection, Mike had one room the size of my entire "Tigers Den" that he called "my dupes room". Boxes, no actually there were crates, of cards. Then he took us across the hall where he opened a double doored closet stacked with cards of all sorts, many of which I had never actually seen, but only heard rumors about there existence. Somewhere between Pre-war and autograph baseballs Mark Talbot appeared. Shortly after, Mike announced, let the swapping begin. Cards were flying around the room faster then meteors in a Star Wars movie. Being a neophyte at these trading sessions, I didn't keep real good track of who gave me what cards. I'm sure Ron Perry gave me a 58T Maxwell and a 57T Small and I found a couple 56's in his dupes box. From John came a couple very much appreciated 54T's. Mark gave me a starter card for my yet to be posted Tigers 54B set, an autographed Charlie Maxwell photo (with copies), and a bunch (28) of Al Kaline Story cards I plucked out of his dupes box. I also helped myself to some newer Cobb & Greenberg cards. The best I can remember from Mike is 4 Tiger Bowman TV's, a 62 Post Canadian Maxwell. I think he gave me a 62 Post American too, but when he found out I had one already he suggested I give it to John. I think I had already given one to John, but I'm not sure, all I know is that everyone got and gave in true OBC fashion. Oh, yeah, we went to a baseball game and watched several periods of the Red Wings playoff game #3. to be continued.............. First from out West in California, LINDA FITAK sends a 51 Bowman of my namesake Earl Johnson who didn't last long with the Tigers as he was released June 11, 1951. This is by far the best conditioned Tiger of that set. Linda also sent a Detroit News Charlie Maxwell for my HOM binder & another Gatorade card to go with the other 3 she sent earlier. Thanks Linda, I am now deeper in your debt. From so far West it's East comes more neat Tiger cards from Lynn Miller. He sends my first Double Header card, a Ray Boone shared by Bob Purkey. Too cool. Another first was the Kaline Scratch Off card which research tells me is a 70-71 Topps. (One of the things I love about OBC is how much I have learned in a short time.) Lastly, Lynn included a 54 Bowman of Steve Gromek who sadly passed away a few weeks ago. Mark Talbot just gave me my first 54B at our Tiger get together on Saturday. Ok guys, I'm going right to my pre-58 Tigers wantlist to add this set. As always, it's was a real pleasure to get cards from Lynn & Linda. They epitomize what OBC is all about. Its been a while since I have posted my thank you list. Life has been busy. Preparing for a week away from the office, a vacation in the Bahamas, and then catching up since I have been back. Vacations are so tiring. Now the World Cup is on and I have had to change my sleeping habits a major way. That is by far the best sporting event in the world. Its very interesting that I have had some soccer card mailings just prior to the World Cup. (By the way, my Brazilian soccer name during the World Cup is Ze Alberto.) Thanks to everyone who sent cards over the last few months. Thanks to: CHUCK PARIS - Pays off his Hoops Pool loss with three 1962 Topps baseball cards for my dupes box. LYNN MILLER - Sends a thoughtful early birthday card with two '59 Topps FB cards along with it. Thats such a nice thing to do. STEVE RITTENBERG - Sends a stack of 12 soccer card from the English Premier League and one from a Scottish soccer set. The cards include players like David Platt and Gazza (Paul Gascoigne). GEORGE VRECHECK - Sends a huge box of cards including three '69-'70 Topps BK, a '71-'72 Globetrotters card, and 70+ UV BK cards. Also in the box were a '61 Topps FB card, two '63 topps FB cards (including a Green Bay Packers team card), eight Philly FB cards from '64 through '67, and a huge stack of Fleer Team Action FB cards. Those Fleer Action cards were enough to prompt me to throw my extended wantlist for those cards on the OBC page. Within those Fleer Team Action was a Dan Marino card from his rookie year. Very cool. Also were some oddballs, a FB promo strip, and 100+ UV FB cards. That was an awesome package to wade through. Thanks! LINDA FITAK - Linda hits me again. This time it was my fault. I asked for a '72 Topps FB HI number from her availables list. Expand your wantlist, Linda, so we can all hammer you back. She throws in two Sammy Sosa UV cards too. Very nice. Sammy is favorite current Latino BB player. (2nd is Omar Vizquel.) Thanks once again, Linda. LARRY GERSBACH - A fellow Ohioan sends a great package featuring a '69-'70 Topps BK card, a '59 topps FB card, a '75 wonderbread FB and a bunch of UV Wildcard FB cards (including an unopened pack, how fun). Lots of those UV cards were inserts and a couple high valued promos. Thanks a lot, Gersh. BILL MALSON - Sends a three card pack of '59 topps FB. That set has been taking a beating recently. Thanks a lot. GARY MANDELL - Fellow member of the class of 10/01 sends some '60s Philadelphia FB. I like your newly expanded FB list too. PETER IVERSON - Sends 14 great soccer tobacco cards from Wills' Cigarettes from the 1930s. Only Glenn Codere has sent me these type of cards prior to this. I love them. After I complete the set, I will be placing them in a frame and on my office wall. ANDY COOK - Sends an awesome '48 Leaf card of Bulldog Turner. Its the red back variation. I never knew this set had so many variations. My wantlist now takes that into account. I am overwhelmed. I owe Andy and now he sends me this. Its one of the best cards in my collection. Thanks.     Kind of a slow week last week with incoming packages but Wyatt came through today in a big way.  Tons of thanks to go out

Andy Cook sends me a SCP of the REDS Stamp booklet from the `69 Topps stamp set.  I will be listing this oddball issue soon as I am in need of more booklets and some stamps.  Thanks Andy for convincing me I just had to add more stuff to my want list.

Richard Kimball who sends (5) of the ugliest `70-`71 Topps basketball cards I have ever seen.  Wrinkled due to water damage, moldy edges, one corner on each card looks like the dog chewed it, truly OBC specials that need someone like me to appreciate them.  But beyond the condition check out the names; Nate Thurmond, Lou Hudson, Walt Frazier, JoJo White and Dave DeBusschere.  It will be a while before these are replaced so Thanks for the ALL-STAR lineup of classic cardboard Richard.

James Moleta hits me first with a trade that we worked out for each of our mutual benefit.  I sent him a number of my `49 and `50 Bowman cards from my collection in exchange for a number of cards from the `51 and `52 Bowman sets of James's collection.  I am very pleased with (5) hits to my `51 Bowman set and (16) hits to my `52 Bowman set.  Names like Maglie, Terwilliger, Kell, Garcia, Hutchinson, Marion and Easter were included.  I think that this trade will work out for both of us as we will both be that much closer to completion of these cool issues.  Thanks James and your package is enroute as we

Ed Schott sends me another SCP from the `64 Topps set.  This is a beautiful Topps HI number card of Joel Horlen of the White Sox.  Ed asks if the condition of the card is Okay - Well Joel any hit to my Topps list this year is a good hit.  The quest with variations still has a ways to go to reach the century mark so Ed this card is JUST FINE!!!

What a start to the week - I sent out (5) this morning to come home to (4) sitting in the mailbox.  OBC is remarkable, I will continue to get more stuff out as the week wears on.  BE WELL!!!!

Not to be outdone, newcomer, Richard Kimball sends 20 hits to the 75 list and does not duplicate anything that Mike had sent. These included guys like Evans, Pinella and Concepcion. Richard also included 9 1979 Topps, with Trammell and Team cards leading the way. A waiver wire of a 1980 Philadelphia Phillies Burger King pack completed the package. A few days later, a great package arrived from Mike with hits to my list on Topps 1975 Mini, 1961 Post, and above all, Mike sent me the final two cans remaining on my want list for the 1978 Royal Crown Cola complete set, which now matches the 1977 RC Cola set I completed last year. This is physically the largest set I have managed to complete - 100 different soda cans in the 1978 set, and 70 different in the 1977 set. I'll take a picture of the way they are displayed and scan it in to share with the group. We have a spare bedroom downstairs with a single window looking out the front of the house, and just below the window inside there's about a 6" sill along the whole front wall. So, I've stacked the cans up in a pyramid style on either side of the window and it really looks nice. Kelly's a little worried because it's a sign I'm trying to take over yet another complete room in the house for parts of my collection. Mike's wantlist is hard to hit but I've got a few hits of my own on it, which I'll send along as soon as I pull myself together, computer-wise. I've never lost the thrill of putting the last missing card (or can) in place to complete a set, and this time was no exception. Thanks very much, Mike! Richard completed our first trade with a great handful of cardboard to add to my collection. Many gridiron heroes with a `56 Topps, a `58 Topps, a `59 Topps, (8) `62 Topps, a `63 Topps, (4) `70 Topps, a `71 Kellogg's, a `71 Topps, and a `74 Topps card. With names like Namath, Morton, Alworth, Csonka and Jurgensen among the heroes this was no ordinary lot. Richard was not through with my want list just yet though - he had to include some baseball cardboard as well. So Richard included a `1977 Topps cloth card of Steve Garvey, (4) `1963 Topps cards including Tigers Foytack and Wertz and a couple of `1959 Topps back variations including Early Wynn. Yes, old Richard Kimball can hide out here in Michigan anytime - especially with goodies like he sends out. Thanks so much Richard - let's do this again soon!!!! Always an impressive envelope with the assorted old stamps and a baseball commem. By the way, these stamps do find a really good home. I collect all my stamps to donate to veterans in VA hospitals who use the stamp collecting as therapy. Highly recommended by doctors. And Linda's stamps would be especially welcomed because of their age. Last time she sealed the envelope with a cut-out of the 500 HR club autographed jersey. This time was a cutout of the portraits of those players with Hank predominantly displayed larger in the middle. Another great "keeper" item for the collection. But inside was her "feeble" attempt to hit my lists. Let's see, a 51T Redback, a 67 hi, and a vintage 78 Laughlin Hank card as an Indianapolis Clown. Feeble??? I told Linda she was being far too hard on herself. Any hit from my list is absolutely great and I'm more than overwhelmed at the great cards that were included. Thanks many times over Linda. Seems Neal Thomas has some spare time from the very involved Rick project to send some great Aaron cards as well. But somehow stuck in the middle (must have been a mistake coz it was only a 66 hi number), that will have to go back :>) Fat chance! Thanks again Neal for some much needed cards. Bill Malson also sent me a 70's vintage Aaron along with his Braves teammate back then, Joe Torre. Thanks very much Bill. Now I just need to upgrade a few trimmed cards to G and I'll be "as happy as a little girl." I had a nice meeting with Bob Donaldson, Ray Luurs, and Ken Morganti at the Boston Park Plaza yesterday, in the midst of the SABR convention. We kicked around cards and chatted for an hour or so before Bob and I departed for our trains through the surprise driving rain storm (instant soak!). Ken chipped in with a high# 55T, Bob had a 51B Ray Boone and a 53T, and Ray passed along a couple of 59T Yankees. Excellent! We worked to indoctrinate a few others in the OBC way, passing cards to a baseball teammate of Ray's and talking up one of the guys from Beckett. But once we did get together the cards did start flying toward me, my wife was not pleased as I promised that i would bring back same two boxes I came with. (I did keep my work and brought back same two boxes what she upset about ...it seems i forgot to tell her about the other three i acquired during the week. Wish to take this time to thank Bob for several 52 topps of my list and Ken for bringing my unmentionalble list down to two. I know Spike gave me something also but after the meeting and advice they gave me I have card up the ying yang and cant for the life of remeber what I received. I do know got a couple of cards out of my dup box and I took a couple of out of his box. I brought to the table a couple of friends of mine. One who is a vintage baseball player on my team and I hope will eventiually a OBC person. He collects cards like I do but since he didnt know I was going to invite him to this.......he bought some cards from Ken becasue he felt funny just taking cards .....I bought a 1961 MVP Mantle from Ken for the same reason (that and the fact he was more reasonable with his price than Most "dealers":-). Then Ken turns around and ask who is collecting 1961 and 62 and i said i was but didnt have a list for my 62 yet: he then takes my list and proceeds to eliminates 32 '61 players froim my want list. Rich Klein, a SABR memeber and good friend, also editor of Becketts joined us. Discussing his role in why all the Mantle cards cost more than a 1.00. I still told him we are blaming him for all our woes. Now this part of the story is where i got into trouble with my wife....we told Ken, Spike and Bob we were going to a card shop I had seen while walking on the Freedom Trail (take the trolley, if your old like me, as I still cant quite walk in a normal upright position). All three said that instead of that one go up block about 50 yards to a place called J. J. Teabury and get the deals. Since we were going to a book signing we took them up on it. At first the man behind the counter was content to let us look at what he had on shelves (I was disappointed because he had no older stuff but I ended up buying two complete set of ???? and ????. Then the more entergetic and enthusiatic owner came in the shop. Looking at what we had bought and Rich talking to him about his ebay sale. Asked us if we were interested in older stuff and if we had a wantlist. When I showed him my want list out came the 59 album which I proceeded to clean him out of all of what i needed that he had plus some 60 and 61's he had. now one would think I had done enough to strain the relationship with my wife when he bringds out a box of old assorted 50's card( he said they had pin holes in them i cant find them nor did i look that hard for them) he said they were two dollars a piece or if someone would buy the whole box from him a dollar. cary (my new OBC hopeful) bought a few he wanted for his list and then I cracked and bought the other 144 of them for me (thinking started sets). Alot were dups but now I have some thing to trade including 55 Bowman football cards. So I wish to take this time to thank the Big three for their help and for meeting them. My only regret from the meeting, as an idiot, i forgot to bring my camera down nor thought about it until bob and spike had left so i could take one. The rest of my trip was also quite memorable as i got my first visit to fenway and while it didnt do to me what wrigley did to me when I first saw it i was quite impressed with the park when i got to my bleacher (do to a SABR problem and me being too Minnesota nice i ended watching most of the game from under stands but walking around seeing the different angles of the green monster. .. it is hard to explain the feeling. I also collect, as a hobby, autographs on baseball. I went to convention with the hopes of getting four. I got Sibby Sisti (first 53Topps card i got when i started collecting my birth year set, Johnny Pesky, and a pretty good pitcher in his day, Luis Tiant.
