Lynn sends a 1953 Billy Connellym a '58 Billy Gardner, and a pair of semi-highs from 1962, Bob Farley and Larry Sherry. Not satisfied with hitting my lists, Lynn takes aim on Jim Rizzo list, with 31 hits to 1970, one hit to 1971 and eight to the 1974 set. Simply awesome. Washington Today I got help from Rex, Matt, Mac, EEK, and Catfish. This added to prior contributions this week from Gary, Ray, and George Hay bring the collected total to $116 plus whatever Paypal contributions Steve R. has waiting for me at the show. For the record, Steve has tried to keep me up to date on the Paypal contributions, so he won't end up spending the money cards. After he hands me the money at the show, I'll put it in my pocket for safe keeping. This should last up to ten minutes - I Kinda reminds me of my trips to the card shop in my youth. My friend Brian and I would take our bikes to Medford (a good 15-20 minute ride) to visit a news/smoke shop that also had cards ...at least I think it also was a news/smoke shop - never bothered to look too hard at much else in there :-) Anyway, I would invariably ask at some point in our trip "Hey Brian, how much money do YOU have?" This usually happened just as I had spent or was about to spend every dime I brought with me... and a couple times before we even walked in the door to the shop. Now that I'm older, I'm a lot thriftier when it comes to spending money at shows. I always try to save $10 for gas - the rest I can kiss bye-bye. I'm also glad many dealers take personal checks and/or credit cards too ;-) The hat fund donations so far have brought me nearly half way towards reimbursement with just a few people donating so far and in a fairly short amount of time. This is why I tried to limit donations - I've seen what this group can do before ;-) Thanks to everyone who has helped either financially and/or with the hat distribution. To: obc-thanks@yahoogroups.com From: Mark S Talbot Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT Hello All, A few I have to tell you about: Bob D'Angelo surprises me with a SCP of Walt Dropo (Another great baseball name) from the `53 Redman set. I don't remember the last Redman I got - I gave some away but I haven't gotten one in a long time. Thanks Bob!!! The "Duke of Maxwell", the "Earl of EEK", the "Dude from Grand Blanc" - whatever we call him Earl Kilbourn passes along a `61 Topps "Stormin Normin" special shiny version for my folder devoted to my HOM hero. Way cool card EEK!!! Finally, Sassy Schoenrock smashes my `52 Topps list and make a real impression on my quest toward 1000 by sending 6 beauties from the set. I need a mere 33 cards to reach my goal and 318 if you count the variations. So I must say I am happy that Sassy has finally posted a want list so that I can properly welcome her to the group - she sure has made an impression on me. I would also like to thank Tim Fitak who gave me a phone call tonight to tell me that he had a few more to send me toward my Topps quest. Tim is the fifth OBC'er that I have either spoken to by phone or met. I have met with Mike Rich and EEK and spoken to Glen, Dave and now Tim. I look forward to our Tiger outing where I am sure to met a number of other fellow collectors. Tim and I enjoyed a nice conversation which I enjoyed very much. He saw Hendrix twice in concert and I enjoyed his stories about some of the premier players of the late 60's. Thanks for the call Tim!!! To all - BE WELL!!! From: Peter Iversen Hello all - I have been getting lots of packages lately and they have brightened up many days. I wanted to let the rest of the group know who has been making Northridge a better place to live! GLENN CODERE - has once again sent me more fabulous Cigarette cards from the 20's and 30's - more Actors including Tom Mix, Marion Davies, Mae Murray, John Gilbert, Harold Lloyd and Ivor Novello - perhaps these are not household names to baseball cards collectors - but to me their names sound like music to my ears and look just wonderful in my binders! Thanks Glenn!! KEN MORGANTI - graces my mail slot (don't have a box just a slot in the door...) with a 1953 Bowman high number - Turk Lown - why anyone would want to be called "turk" I do not know - but he sure looks cool on his card and I love having another Bowman Color to add to the set! Thank You ERIK GREENWOOD - I just can't sent Erik cards to try to even the score without him getting some back to me within 2 days! This time I got some more great 72's including Kingman and Blue and some cards in the 600's too... I appreciate the cards very much Erik - Thanks! GENO WAGNER - also sends something out like lightening - a 1972 Topps Bob Gibson to add to that rapidly growing set! Thanks for the great card of a great pitcher! I appreciate it Geno! LARRY GERSHBACH - finds 15! for my 72 set including McCovey, Koosman, Dusty Baker and Jim Palmer - great cards - especially Dusty in his pre Dodger days - and they look like high number SP's too Wonderful Larry! GARY MANDELL - sends me 3 72's - Joe Morgan and a Lolich/Blue LL card included - more fine examples to add to this set Gary - Thank You! JEFF DELOTT - yes the 72's keep on coming - this time I find a Brooks as a Boy card and Santo in the group of 5 - and Jeff also hits me with a 1971 Tommy John (another later to be Dodger..) that takes that set down to 81 needed - I also appreciate the Ty Cobb stamp Jeff - I have been collecting these and think I have all but 5 - I only collected ones that came on incoming OBC mail... So Merci! NEAL THOMAS - well you guessed it, more of the psychos to look at, read and add to the set - this batch came with a Ron Perranoski former Dodger player and pitching coach - I even met him once with my mother in law at a local bar... Now as good of a story as it sounds but if you ask I will tell you. Thank you for the 9 x 1972's Neal! MIKE WIERZBICKI - Two 72's come my way - this time a former Dodger Jeff Torborg - catcher for at least 2 of Koufax's No-Hitters - and a guy named GOGOLEWSKI... what a great name! I must admit I have never heard of him - but I bet Guru had him on his 'hot investments' list at one time... I like the cards a lot Mike! NICHOLAS WAGNER - finds time to make me the COOLEST Dodger Pennant - which is now hanging on my refrigerator - and will be for the season!! Wow Nicholas this is great! And also I found a 1915 CJ reprint of Rube Marquard - a horizontal card yet! Great stuff Nicholas! STEVE RITTENBERG - I think Steve wants me to loose my hair and teeth in shock... He sends me not one, not two but THREE 1962 Topps Venezuelan cards!!! This is a MOST amazing gift and one that will take me years to adequately thank Steve for. There is a Leaders card with Dick Donovan and DON MOSSI on it, and two checklists - # 2 and #3. Funny think is that this is a 200 card set and checklist #3 goes to #264. What does that say about the people at Topps - or how they thought about the Venezuelans... Then again there are TWO cards above #200 checked off on this checklist - #255 Juan Pizarro and #256 Elio Chacon. Well I knew that Elio was inserted as card # 199 to take the place of Perry - so I guess that Juan must be card number 197 or 198 - who I know are not Spencer or Keene. - anyway I am REALLY happy as I look at these cards and think about how far they have traveled in the past 40 years... Can't thank you enough Steve! To all of you out there who have read this - THANKS to you too for helping make OBC the kind of place where these daily little packages can add up to big and beautiful blessings for the people who have the fun of opening them...! The Tigers may be struggling and bumbling along, but that's ok, the best part of being a Tiger fan is that that puts me into a very special group. Let's call it the "Fraternal Order of Tiger-fans" (FOOT). An example of "FOOT" is when George Moore sent me a Kaline rookie card. Here's another example. I sent a few UV cards to Mark Talbot. Shortly thereafter I recieve the following: 1962 Post Tiger Jake Wood, five 1955's including a Gus Triandos and "Spook" Jacobs, 11 1965's, plus embossed cards for Dean Chance, Frank Malzone and Richie Allen, 11 1968's and one 1960 Leaf Clement Walter Labine which was erroneously listed on my Tiger Team Want list, but turns out to be a Dodger. I'll be happy to pass this card #60, 1960 Leaf along to whoever may want it. Also, Mark sent a nice note along with a Tiger pocket schedule and cool Comerica fan guide. Thanks Mark. I hope we can get together at the upcoming OBC Tiger game on June 8. I met up with OBC veteran Ron Perry. Ron and I first met at the National last year and then I hosted Ron in an OBC get together last fall. Ron and I had hoped to meet up for Saturday breakfast, but with my poor directions he did not find the restaurant. When he finally got in the show (45 minute wait - and he was lucky), his wife, Marlene, pointed put a table that I happened to be at. She must be clairvoyant, becuase we had ever met, and I had not given any description of what I would be wearing. There were others from Detroit at the show, so my Tiger T-shirt was not a dead give-a-way. Marlene went to the snack shop and read a book for most of the day, while Ron and I wandered through the show. I introduced him to a table that I got some 1961 Post Bb shortprints in bad shape for $1-2 Canadian (and then discounted for volume purchasing). Since I had already grabbed most there were only a few for Ron to get, but he did ok. At another table, a dealer I had E-mailed before the show, but forgot to get a table #, knew me as "buyer from Detroit", or at least that is what the monster box said. I really was only interested in 1 row of this box of OPC hockey, but Ron was interested ins tarting some OPC hockey and asked about the rest of the box. Long story short, we bought the monster box of approx. 2500-3000 OPC hockey cards. Ron will have plenty of dupes of 1977-78 for trade after June 8 (he left them in my custody until the OBC Tiger get together). Ron also had picked up a stack of tipton Parkhurst hockey on Friday night, that he delivered about 10 of to me, sa paybacks from the fall get together. I felt bad I had not pulled anything for him, until the above 2 deals (made me feel better for him). Hey 25 year old cards for $.01 - $.02 Canadian is a great deal (the OPC Hockey buy). A ramble to that server and to OPCC will follow later this week. When I got home 4 OBC packages awaited me. Thanks to Eek for a UV but archive of my HOM Willie Horton. Larry Gersh, OBC Rookie, introduced himself in fine style with a 1953 Topps BB, getting me down to 36 for the set, so you know each 1 helps a lot. Steve Rittenberg, just keeps on sending me stuff. This time 4 1948 Leaf Boxing. Almost doubles what I have and puts pressure on me to take this set seriously. Linda checks in with her 3rd package in 2 weeks. Highlighted by another 1953 Bowman FB. This brings my total Bowman FB down to 50 needed. WOW. 4 packages after a show weekend. The wl took some nice hits. Thanks to all. Three packages came in and a large dent was put in my ever-shrinking wantlists. Bob D'Angelo sends along various hits to a few of my sets. Some nice team cards from the 73 set and a nice Jerry Koosman AS from 1970 were the highlights. I have a 53 Topps card to send your way Bob. It should be out in the mail soon. John McLaughlin told me that he would get some cards together for me in return for the 1992 starter sent I sent him a few weeks back. I wasn't ready for what he sent at all. 16 hits to my 1978 set, 11 to my 1977 set, 2 76 traded, a 76 Topps, 2 74's, a 72 HR Leaders, and a 75 Fred Lynn RC. The 77's and 78's were littered with stars like Fisk, Yaz, Brock, Morgan, Palmer, McCovey,Perry, Jenkins, Sutter, and a Murphy/Parrish 78 RC. Amazing hits that pretty much take care of the star needs from those years. Another amazing package came from Sean McGowan. I inquired about a 53 Topps Sain off his waiver list and he replied that it was no longer available but that he had some 77s if I was interested. He sends 120 unique hits to the set, but he "cheated" by sending one of each card in his dupes box. As if that weren't enough, he sends about 25 hits to my 1978 set, another 100+ to the 79 venture, and includes cards from every year in between. Much appreciated hits. I will get to looking at your lists in the coming days and to updating my own. eBay winnings have brought in a 1953 Topps, 1961 Topps, and 1973 Kelloggs starter sets. I now have about 21% of the 53 set, 40% of the 61 set, and 50% of the 73 set. OBC has whittled my 1978 Topps wantlist down to the final 107 cards. I can't get over the amazing amount of generosity in this group. I am very appreciative of all the cards I have received so far and look forward to sending out cards in the coming days. To: obc-thanks@yahoogroups.com From: Mark S Talbot Hello All,

Three stars to talk about who sent cardboard in my

First to Lorin Anderson who sends me my first OBC `41 Double Play card with Tribesmen Ken Keltner and Hal Trosky pictured.  I just started this set with a few eBay purchases and Lorin is the first to hit my list.  Thanks so much Lorin.

Secondly, I'd like to thank Linda and Tim Fitak who send some hits to my quest to 1000 Topps.  Tim had called me last week and we had an enjoyable conversation and he said I would enjoy the next Fitak-pac and he was right.  A `52 Topps card of Clyde Kluttz (I wonder Dropo and Kluttz ever played on the same team - Great names), a `53 Topps card of Tiger Jim Delsing and a `55 Topps card of long time Tiger coach under Sparky (pictured here as a Cardinal) Alex Gramas.  The usual travelers accompanied these treasures like Target Dodgers, Crown Orioles, Police Dodgers, a Gatorade Tiger (Mike Morre), a Lucy card, a few reprints, Nap Lajoie from Origins of Baseball and plenty of other stuff.  WOW!!!!  You were so right Tim - Thank You to both of you!!!

Finally, Ed Schott completes a little swap that we arranged by shipping off (7) direct hits to the `64 Topps set getting me ever so closer to the 1000 mark.  These were no ordinary (7) cards however ranging from number 480 to 585 we can all recognize these as prized HI numbers from the set.  I am HIGHLY pleased with this offering Ed - THANKS!!!

OBC is so cool - I have been quite busy and owe so many guys and gals cardboard and yet your generosity never ceases.  I humbly thank all of you - BE WELL!!!

Monday's tend to be a good OBC day and this Monday proved no exception with 3 more packs in. Peter Mead from VCT continues his assault on a 1974 Loblaw's hockey set he got me starrted on last month. After Toronto and this package, I need less than 20 stckers/stamps to complete the set. Greg Conway surprises me with a handful of nice condition star cards, as further payback of stuff I sent him a few months ago. These were really sharp and may upgrade the ones I have in my sets. Included were: 1956 (gray back) Banks, 58 Colavito, 59 Mathews, 2 1961 4th series cl, andn a 62 Musial. Now those are stars. Wayne Delia, who I hope things have settled down for sends along 7 Red Man cards, from 1954 & 1955. I may have to post my wl on the OBC site for these. I was asleep when the USPS guy snuck onto the porch, but he may have rang the bell too. I got the Patriots Super Bowl video from sportsbook.com (I made a few bucks there on that game, so it was a surprise that they'd send me anything else.) A few friends have seen the video said that it wasn't really worth buying, so a free one should be worth it The video was tucked under a rather large puffy from Kansas. Inside was the July 1969 Sport mag with Tony C on the cover. Also included was an auto'd Johnny (64 Topps Giant) and a chocolate bar featuring Wade Boggs. I think the candy has long since passed it's expiration date, but I'm still tempted to try it anyway. The picture of Wade shows him in a Bosox uniform, so it's really old. Maybe if I put the wrapper up on eBay, I can get enough to pay to get my stomach pumped from eating the chocolate? Rick also added in some hat fund money and a nice note which reminded me that Boggs became a traitor and went for money and fame (mostly money) in NY. I'll eventually forgive him - long before I forgive that Rocket guy anyway. THANKS RICK!! Mike Rich also added his hat fund contribution. Lynn informed me today that the hats may be ready in another week. I don't think that will leave enough time to have them to pass out in Vegas, even if he sends them directly to Mike Hair in Vegas. I'll probably have to catch up with a lot of you in Chicago (Hats at the Nats). THANKS MIKE!! Did I already thank Spike for a 67 high number? I had to ding up the corners to match my set, but it looks good now. THANKS (again?) SPIKE!! My desk is clear and most of the cards are properly entered into their binders... for the moment. Bob Schaub ================= Date: Mon, 13 May 2002 16:46:16 EDT Subject: Rainy day thanks To: OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com, jgreco@us.imshealth.com From: cardclctor@aol.com Greetings everyone, It's raining outside and inside the house in Everett today. Fortunately, the water is staying outside and the rain indoors is in the form of cardboard. Monday's mail delivery was delayed either by the precipitation or the fact that the mailman had a lot of extra mail to lug around until he got to my house. Here's the breakdown on my haul: First package I grabbed was a bubble mailer from Ray Luurs containing a half dozen hits to my less than a week old 63 Topps set. Included was a nice tipton example of The Monster in a Bosox uniform. THANKS RAY!! Mike Wierzbicki sends a pair of additional hits to the same list along with hat money. Mack Jones in the front and a Norm Larker for the back pages of the binder get crossed off the list. THANKS MIKE!! Next up is the delivery from Neal Thomas who sends (surprise!) another half dozen 63's including Frank Howard, Matty Alou and Bill Virdon. THANKS Bob D'Angelo's envelope adds to the hat fund project and my stamp collection as well. THANKS BOB!! Vintage card specialist Mark Talbot (it says so on his business card) contributes nine more 63's plus a 61 Post that's been waiting for traveling companions for some time (a Pedro Ramos of the tougher Minnesota variety). The most interesting card has to be Bubba Phillips however. Someone cut out the small insert photo in the corner of the card. I think if you cut out all of them in the set and got a few hundred coin holders (probably quarter size) you could make yourself a whole new set of 63's.... and fit 20 cards to a page, thus saving you the added cost of those extra plastic sheets. Good idea! Mark also added in a Tigers pocket sked and a Comerica Park travel brochure but I'm pretty happy with the Red Sox season thus far, so I won't be switching alliances just yet THANKS MARK!! The final package is a cut down puffy from The House of Maxwell containing all but one of the cards I need for the 'other Topps set' I started after last weekend's Ft. Washington show. THANKS EEK!! One week and already I have two dozen hits to the 63 set. At this rate I should be down to just the Rose RC by the time The Nats roll around... but I'm not ruling that one out either Thanks to everyone who's looked at my list. I have been tracking the progress of all my sets and this round of hits tops the 400 mark of hits to this set in the past 3 months. Thank you very much Brock and OBC for trimming down this wantlist. My mailbox was flooded...with cardboard! My mentor of cards non-baseball, Steve Rittenberg, sends along a puffy of 20 big hits to my 1974 and 1975 football lists! One of the cards is of Tom Dempsey, who up until a couple of years ago was the sole answer to a cool trivia question (kicker with the longest FG). Thanks Steve! Thanks Jim! It seems Steve Rittenberg has something personal against the '71 football set. After recently finishing Brian Lindholme's set, he sends three more hits to mine, bringing the total down to five. Included today were Willie Lanier and Rams Les Josephson and Kermit Alexander. Thanks Steve!! Also got a good deal on a small lot of '57s including Banks, Kluszewski, Martin, Podres, Piersall, Mathews and others. Banks has glue on the back - Imay try to get it off - maybe not. We had a little family celebration and now we have the rather doughty task of moving her back home. Problem: her loving father (me) turned her bedroom into his (my) own office/baseball card place/den/library. So now poor Heather has to take up residence in the family room. It's temporary, she's already got a lease on an apartment starting this August, then we get to move her again. Advise to all you youngens who haven't sent children off to school: bye a bigger house. Since this is the thanks server I better get to the thanks part of this just in case anyone is still reading. Today I got one of those Linda Fitak envelopes like what I've been reading about from other OBCers. The first thing you can't help but notice is the interesting assortment of stamps on the front. A couple of half cent, a couple of 23 cent and topped off with a Ty Cobb. The back of the envelope is sealed with old christmas seals, a couple from Cal Farley's Boys Ranch, Amarillo, Texas and a couple 1949 Boys Town, Nebraska. I'm keeping the envelope as a collectable along with the Ok, you might want to pull up a chair and have a sit-down, that was a whole paragraph and I haven't gotten inside the envelope. Inside is even better... Two 1993 Tiger Gatorade cards, a 1991 Coca-Cola Tigers, some kind of autographed baseball promotion with three round cardboard sections attached. One is No. 5 of 20, Matt Nokes, one is No. 11 of 20 Vince Coleman and one is the contest mail in form for a auto'd baseball of your favorite team for $4.95. Offer expires 12/1/88. A 1968 Topps Game card of Bill Freehan, a 2002 UD Vintage #95 Robert Fick which is a cool looking card for being UV, it looks like a 1971 Topps. I'm going to have to check this set out a little closer some time. Another UD card, this time some kind of insert card of Hank Greenberg, a 1992 Action Packed All-Star Gallery Series 1, George Kell, some sort of Minor League card (i think) of Brian Maxcy listing his progress through the Tiger's minor Leagues ending with "Brian made the big leap to the majors in '95 and excelled in pressure situations." The front says Old Judge with T-96 Series below that. Then there is a card that I am supprised Linda let get away from her, being a big Mickey Mantle fan and all. 1997 Mickey Mantle Collection card #38. Then we move into Dodger cards; 1984 Police/Fire Dodgers, two cards, three 1990 Target Dodgers. This is a Dodger fan's set, 1140 cards, that's what I call an ambitious undertaking, only 1137 to go. :-), a 1989 CMC Jose Canseco, a "I love Lucy" card from Pacific Trading Cards, Episode #176, a 20th Century Fox "The Simpsons" card featuring everyone's favorite little delinquent, Bart Simpson. A 1951 Bowman Aaron Robinson, a needed Tiger, three 1965 Topps and three 1968 Topps all hits to the want list. Well, I don't know what to say. I spent a very enjoyable afternoon going through all these cards. I guess all I can say is THANKS LINDA!!! A very fun and thoughtfull package which made my day. In December my daughter-in-law, who's job leave here was running out, moved in with us, along with my 12 mo. old grandson and an Indonesian nanny. It was just until my son came back in April, they said. Well my son got in to University of Michigan grad. school, so rather than find an apartment for 3 months, he moved in too and they're all staying until August. Then my second son came home from college. He's living in my baseball card room ..which has no closet. My third son called Saturday night to say he was engaged. I asked if they needed a place to live ..we still have room in the garage. Fortunately, he declined. The real challenge will begin when the nanny has to go back to Indonesia June 1. This may partially explain why Judy and I are going to Vegas02 ...and anyplace else that will take us. And we were kidless for 4 whole months. - Doug ================= To: "Thanks" Subject: Thanks Mike Rich! That would be really neat because there are personal stories behind all of those guys that you don't normally get to hear. And if I remember correctly there aren't any cards in that group (would be pretty broad because you could choose any card of the player you wanted) that would be just too expensive. Bob sent a big puffy of cards that I will mention on the "UV" server, but also includes a supprise: My 60 Years in Baseball, by Ernie Harwell. Must read stuff for any Tiger fan, and if you've never heard Harwell broadcast a game, you've missed a real class act. Unfortunately, this is his last year (again, but that's another story). Then Larry Gersbach, aka Gersh goes back, back, back, back, back... and over the fence with seven 65 and two 68 Topps cards. Next up, Ed Schott digs in and on a 0-3 count gets the green light to swing away. Ed makes it back to back to back dingers with nine hits to the 65 Topps set. After a visit to the mound in what is obviously a stall for time to get some extra warm up time in the bull pen, up steps the much feared veteran slugger, Howard Morgan. Howard is promtly drilled in the ear hole and both benches clear. Howard shakes it off with a couple of those UV cards plus six game cards of some kind. I couldn't find anything about these cards from any of my sorces, they are 2in. X 3in. black & white cards with the player's name on the front top and back, with various hitting scenarios. There's no info on these cards as to just what they are, not even any copywrite info. Four of them where Tigers at one time or another, so I would be interested in finding out a little more about them. Do you know what they are Howard? To the above gentelmen, I say thank you very much for the great cards/book and one of these days I will get caught up with pay backs, you guys are just too much. First, Doug Smith handed me an envelope with a half dozen 70s, including the guy traded for Nolan Ryan, Jim Fregosi. Next, the luckiest guy in the world (at least at the tables), Ken Morganti, presented me with a 61T Ed Bouchee for my Montana-born players list, and a Red Sox logo from an actual Carl Yastrzemski game-worn hat! Very cool! Peter Iversen also was most generous, as he gave me a 53BBW Floyd Baker and a 55B Billy Goodman for my Red Sox collection, and also a couple of woodies (Spahn and Musial) for my birthyear set (62, not 54 Steve Rittenberg started off the festivities by handing me a handful of 58s, and later presented me with a copy of the book The Shining, which has a Yaz reference, but only in the movie. In addition, Steve pulled a handful of 70s and a 72 Rick Wise Traded card while we devoured some Wings at Hooters (more on that later). Ribmaster extraordinaire Mike Hair, in addition to filling my ample stomach with killer barbecue, filled some holes in my 58 binder with a quartet of dandies. Thanks to all! I have a small pile of envelopes on my desk that I'll take care of first: Steve Rittenberg is hitting my lists on all fronts. He sends me cards inthe mail, hands them to me in person, and he trades with third parties and has them send still more cards to me. This latest delivery is via Tim Blum, who adds to my UV collection. THANKS STEVE!! Next come a pair of hat fund contributions from Yaz and Sassy. In reply to Sassy's note: We'll have to see how the hat project works out first before embarking on a T-shirt project. Maybe eventually we'll have a whole wardrobe? :-) THANKS GREG and SASSY!! Lynn Miller spotted my 1963 list and sent a puffy that still had plenty of hits left in it by the time it was stateside. Robin Roberts headed the list of stars added to my set. THANKS LYNN!! Just today I got an envelope from the Grizzled one. Howard sends three from ...the 1960 set?? I got #'s 1, 3 and 247, which must've been on my 1963 list, but I'm not working on the 1960 set just yet. Anyone need these? THANKS A couple more contributions were made to the hat fund in person while I was in Vegas. This brings the total to $449 with only another $150 or so left to account for. ($450 for the hats, $90 shipping from Lynn to me, $43 for the ripoff Western Union payment I sent him, plus $17 for me to mail out a few packages to everyone). THANKS EVERYONE!! I'll try to put the thanks from Vegas into words. First off, I'd like to thank Mike Hair for his organization of the events every year. Mike does everything from purchasing the baseball game tickets, coordinating the golf outing, preparing countless pounds of ribs (for me and still more for the rest of the gang) to planning the traditional (and non-traditional) stops on our weekend tour. Mike makes everything run smoothly and takes the worries out of the weekend for me. He's also an inspiration on the golf course, but unfortunately it takes a lot more than inspiration to help my game. :-) BIG THANKS MIKE!! Also thanks to my transportation which was provided at one point or another by Rex Stahlman, David Kolenda, Rick Ellison, Josh Levine, Mac Wubben, and even Al Cummings (eventually). Renting a car so I can sit in traffic is not my idea of a wise investment. I do enough driving on the east coast, so it's good to get a break from behind the wheel once in a while. THANKS GUYS!! Some of you handed me cardboard. Please forgive me if I forget you in the list: Peter Iversen handed over a green tint Ruth special, leaving just the Ruth/Gehrig to complete the set! THANKS PETER!! Al Cummings handed over a puffy filled with 63's, many of which were pack fresh. I had to crease a few of them up to match the set, but they look OK now. St. Al also added in a couple divine 61 Post including Hammerin' Hank. THANKS AL!! George Hay doesn't have a wantlist posted anywhere on the internet, so I was disappointed I didn't have any cards for him, especially after he presented me with a pair of high numbers for the 63 Topps set! THANKS GEORGE!! Steve Rittenberg finished off one of my hockey sets, re-finished a hoop set, then knocked off a few more from my UV list in the process. THANKS Most of all, I'd like to thank the OBC'ers who made V02 the awesome event it was. People ask what this group is about and I can only describe the tip of the iceberg. Sure, cards have something to do with it, but they're such a small part of what makes these gatherings worth flying all day/night to attend. The pleasure of your company is worth more than I could ever reciprocate in cardboard. Thanks to Al, Geno, Mac, Mike, Todd, Jim, Steve, Peter, David, Josh, Rex, Trips, George(s) Hay and Pizzo, Doug and Joel. I hope I didn't leave anyone off of the list. If so, I deeply apologize. I can't wait to meet up with all of you again. THANKS EVERYONE!! Finally, thanks to Rick Ellison for inviting me to attend his wedding and reception. It was easily the highlight of my weekend and raised the bar on future Vegas gatherings. THANKS RICK!! TAYL, Ken M ================= Date: Wed, 22 May 2002 14:17:24 EDT Subject: What a day! To: obc-thanks@yahoogroups.com From: smart1853@aol.com Today I was able to get the mail much earlier than usual because I was home from school and have begun in-home-tutoring as a result of my mononucleosis (a real pain, as any of you that have had it know). After a 2 hour session, getting packages from 3 traders made my day much better. Thanks go out to... ...Bob Donaldson, who sends me a 6 pack of 1978 Topps which brings me down to the final 90. Included were a Vida Blue and a Jim Dwyer (no relation). Thanks Bob. ...Spike Glidden, who obliterated my 76 Topps wantlist. If this were a 229 card set, Spike would have all but completed it as he sends me every card from 1-229 that I needed, with the exception of two. Many stars, record breakers, and leaders cards were included. Still have 178 to go (#5 Seaver and #19 Brett from the first 229) but this package definitely helped me along a lot. Also in the mail was a package from VCT member Don Roth who contributed to the 76 effort as well with 25 hits. These packages, coupled with some from earlier in the week, have brought me under the 2500 cards-to-go mark to finish my sets from the 70s. :) I envy all the guys that have less than 1000 to go for the whole run. That's alright though, because it gives me about 12000 cards to track down in the future. It'll be tons of fun. :) Thanks to these members and all the others that have helped me along. I was rather busy and don't remember exactly who gave me what, but some of the booty includes: A 58 Mantle from Trips. 25 hits to my Post Cereal collection from Al. I guess he finally finished the Raisin Bran. Last year Ken gave me a packet of cards. I glanced through them between cooking and stuck them in my pocket. It was a few days later when I realized that he had given me (among others) a Carlton Rookie. This year He gave me a Mickey sandwich... 2 cards on the outside with a 66 Mantle in the middle! Trader Doug left me a SCP from 66. Also got a number of 58s and a 66 Aaron, sorry, I forgot who I got them from. Is the glass half empty or half full... a pessimist would say that the 57 Clemente was trimmed, the optimist would say that it had great centering. You hardly get to shake someone's hand and you pull it back full of cards. All I can say is thanks to all the OBCers at the BBQ. Steve decided since I would not post a wantlist for 70 OPCs he would give me all his dups. Peter felt bad about giving away all his 69 Topps in the waiver wire so he found me another box full. The first word that comes to mind is awesome. Special thinks to Mike Hair for all his work setting everything up. The ribfest at Mikes was incredible. I met 5 OBCers for the first time, but of course it wasn't like meeting them for the first time at all ...I've known them for years. Rick Ellison and I have shared cards for 8 years (you can't really call it trading) and spoken on the phone ..finally we met. Mike Hair and I likewise have chatted for years. Dave Kolenda and I have traded as well, and served together for 2 years on the OBCAC. I was Rex Stallman's mentor when he joined OBC 5 years ago. And Mac Wubben and I have traded some pretty nice cards. It was great to meet them in person. And it was certainly great to see St. Al, Ken, Steve, Josh, Peter, Geno, Joel, George, Jim, and Todd again, along with former OBCer G eorge Pizzo. The card trading was a little calmer that last year at the National. Most of the guys were pretty organized and had already checked wantlists. I could start to thank the guys who I know game me cards, but I would certainly miss someone. So let me just give big thanks to everyone. Breakfast before golf was exciting ... everyone had plenty of excuses (none are allowed on the course). I thought by excuse was best but I won't bother to repeat it because It didn't get me sh*t. I was paired with Mikes friend Carl, who hit the ball straight unlike the rest of us, defending champion Dave, and first time golfer Steve. We thought we played pretty well but not outstanding. The fact that we won by 17 strokes certainly says something, but I'm certainly not sure what. I don't believe any of us will quit our day job and join the tour. The lunch at the Frog detoured to Hooters. I picked up a few high number 73's at the card shop. After an extended and interesting tour of Vegas finding the ball park (George and Lucy learned to navigate from Margaret I guess) we arrived at the ball park about the end of the first inning. About 10,000 people seemed to me to be a pretty good crowd. Ken began passing the glass at a quarter a batter. Someone hits a home run and you keep the contents. No home runs and Judy had the glass at the end of the game. The $17 she won was about enough to cover my losses at the slots. What can you say about Rick and Margaret's wedding? It was beautiful. Rick was almost eloquent. The chapel was full of friends. The weather was great. Everything went beautifully. The reception following was very nice. Further opportunities for old friends to chat and share. Dinner at Samstown and breakfast with George and Joel at Paris finished the weekend. We will be back. Hope to see most of you in Chicago. - Doug ================= Date: Thu, 23 May 2002 22:00:06 EDT Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] Vegas 02 one more thing To: TraderDoug@aol.com, OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com, From: Traderdoug@aol.com One ...and thanks to Mike Diamonte for the coffee. From: Peter Iversen I usually save up my thanks after writing the person directly and list a week or two's for everyone to see and join me in my appreciation - but I got a package tonight that will just not wait...! BRETT DOMUE - has sent me a bakers dozen of cards that have really knocked me off my feet - any ONE of these would have made a great package - but 13 are beyond belief...! I got 8 55 Bowman's including 6 high numbers (three of which are UMPIRES!) and also an Antonelli and Aadcock. It was interesting to note that I received these the same day that Dodger Sean Green broke Joe's record of 18 Total bases in a game (with 19) and tied the 4 HR record that Joe also tied in 1954. All of the info about Aadcock's record is noted on the back of this 55 Bowman card! I also got 3 cards for the much loved and enjoyed HORIZONTAL sets - a 50 Bowman and TWO 51 Bowmans that will be living in my All Horizontal binder soon - to be looked at and enjoyed again and again. Then there was a much sought after Dodger oddball - a 1961 Bell Brand card of Walt Alston that really tickles my fancy and beefs up that Dodger set in just the right way. Finally - the icing to the cake - or actually the cake AND the icing is the 1941 Double Play card of Pee Wee Reese and Kirby Higbee that came along for the ride with the rest of these wonderful pieces of cardboard! Brett - I am extremely thankful and bouncing around the room. I think Denice will have to peel me off the ceiling to get me to bed... Linda sent a waiver claim of 1939 Playball #86, bringing me up to 7 in the set. Then Linda sends me yet another hit to my 1953 Bowman FB set. Linda had told me sahe would find a card I needed in this set over a month ago. This package makes the 3RD she has sent me from that set since then. Prior to Linda hitting that set, I had gone about a year without a hit. She is personally making progress on it for me. Jim Hatch for 50 hits spanning 1971-1980. Included were a 72 Concepcion, various checklists, 2 cards from my shrinking 1978 wantlist, and a 1979 Steve Carlton, bringing me to under 45 left for completion. Thanks, Jim! Geno Wagner for his second SCP since I have been a member. Today's had an extremely nice 1980 Paul Molitor tucked inside along with the usual APBA card. Thanks, Geno and I hope one of these days you find something off my availables list. And finally to Brock Hattox for 300 Ultra Pro sheets for storing my cards. Thank you, Brock! ================= Date: Fri, 31 May 2002 21:30:06 -0000 To: OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com Subject: A week of thanks From: "mikesportsfan" I am not positive if I gave thanks for a couple of pacakges from last weekend, plus got a bunch this week, so: On May 23 Linda Fitak pays a visit. THis is regualr occurance. A 1953 Bowman FB #51 John Karras in gorgeous shape, might be the nicest I have in the set. accompanied by a 1939 Playball. On Tuesday, May 28, Linda pays another visit with yet another 53 Bowman FB. This time #44 a shortprint. Linda has been systematically wrecking my 53 Bowman FB wl. She has sent me 4 pacakges with 1 each I need, bringing me to 24 to complete this tough set. As we all know, Linda cannot send a SCP. Along for the trip was a 1952 Topps #42 Red Back, plus another Fleer FB Immortal and the usual vintage stamps on the envelope. I will need to put together a special package for Linda and Tim. Major Matt was fortunate enough to have the 2 of the same 1966 Topps high #546 sent to him by OBC. Seeing that posted, I claimed 1 for a special set I am working on. Thanks to Matt and the OBCers who forwarded this card to him. I also received a few non-OBC pacakges that if you here from these guys, seem to be excellent traders (for value - not OBC pass it on tradition). Fred McKie, for 1962 Salada coins. (Look at my OBC list first, as I am also working on the set and have some to trade). Michael Hensley from Dan Austin's OPCC group. I also won an Ebay lot of 1965 Old London coins. This year I have gone from 1 as a type set to 9 of the 40 coins. I guess I am now collecting them and will post on the OBC list soon. Thanks everyone. I beleive my first trade with Jim Beauchemin. Jim delivers 3 of the last 4 1951 Topps Red Backs I need. Kiner, Hodges and Kluzewski. The Klu is probably the nicest 51 Topps Red Back I have. Now if I can just find the Duke and a couple of variation cards this set will be done. Jim - fantastic. From overseas Lynn Miller pays another visit with an incredible package. Lucky 7 cards. Start off with nice, but nothing to get too excited about, 3 1977 Topps Cloth BB. Oddball set I like that gets little action. Then a 1969 Milton bradley Hank Aaron. Hey this package is nice. Then I find a 1949 MP & Co. card of #123 Evers in unbelievable shape. I have about 15 MP & Co. cards and had no idea they could look like the card Lynn sent. Knowing I am a Tigers fan Lynn includes a few more Tigers. Oh Yea, prewar 1933 Goudey #100 George Uhle (sorry never heard of him before) and then a first for me. A 1950 Royal Dessert of #21a Virgil Trucks. I have seen these cards, but never thought I would get 1. WOW. The 29th was a GREAT day. 2 incredible OBC pacakges and the Wings sending the series to game 7. Thanks guys and GO WINGS!!! Jeff Sinclair sends along a sharp trio of 1968 Topps hits, including a White Sox team card and a Denny Ribant traded variation! Thanks Cap! New OBC'er Joe Isaac checks in with a great package of cards: 4 hits to the 1969 list (including a Juan Marichal and a Gil Hodges) and 5 hits to the 1970 birthyear quest (including a Brooks Robinson, Willie McCovey and Orlando Cepeda)!! Thank you Joe! The "IO" list has grown again! Happy Collecting! ================= Date: Fri, 31 May 2002 20:02:08 EDT Subject: Thank God it's Friday To: obc-thanks@yahoogroups.com From: Traderdoug@aol.com Four packages arrived today. Geno Wagner sent a 73 Topps McCovey, along with a note that said "I wish I had more." In a second envelope from Geno came 7 66 Topps. Hmmm..more. Thanks, Geno From Josh Levin cane a cool English Boy Scout Card. Thanks, Josh. From Mac Wubbin came 25 t206's. Well these are from an ebay lot a few of us went together to buy, but it included 15 hits on my T206 list. I'm now over 400. I still need 9 southern leaguers and 14 hall of famers ..including some I'll never get. But a few years ago I didn;t have any. Geno and Josh, thanks for the cards. Mac, thanks for suggesting we get together and handling the details. - Doug ================= Date: Sat, 01 Jun 2002 01:16:30 -0000 To: OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com Subject: Trader Doug brighten a gloomy day From: "rayluurs" After entertaining the masses on the golf course today i shot a 47 on a par 29 (i drive like Jack Nicklaus unfortunately when I putt I drive like like Jack Nicklaus)I come home where TRADER DOUG has sent a package of 5 59's to dwindle that like done again. And a Bosox at that. Takes a little off the sting of the horrible game 7 hockey game tonight. (At least the France-Senegal game was enjoyable.) Thanks for the cards guys! Added in to that were a couple ofhigh number 1965 OPC baseball cards (11 more for the set), a T118 explorercard of Peary and some '50s Wings cards. All great stuff.
