Thanks go out today to Earl, the EEKster, for a very cool Ron Santo card! Santo is the one player not in the HOF that most deserves to be. Maybe it's because three of his teammates (Banks, Williams, and Jenkins) are all in and three is enough for a team that never won. Santo was the fire in the Cubs, and still is as a fan and radioman. I'm not sure if he is calling games this year after loosing a limb to diabetes a few months ago. He's a class act and I hope Cooperstown opens the doors to a the old thirdbaseman whofinished with five Gold Gloves, 342 dingers, over 1300 RBI, and a .277 average. Thanks Earl! There were many other goodies included highlighted by Sonic (my family's favorite burgers) All Time Greats Joe Morgan, Tommy John, and Bert Campaneris. Another highlight is a way cool card depicting the Marines landing at Guadalcanal (where does she come up with this stuff?). And the topper, Linda included a clipping from the May 25, 1983 edition of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, our local newspaper, depicting none other than herself dressed as a Flapper (is that right?) enjoying Jazz man Johnny Dedroit at the Tulane Hot Jazz Classic. I would like to wish the following thanks for their generosity: Ray Luurs sends a SCP to "pay-off" the loss of Montana to the Ducks of Oregon. The `66 Philly card of Bears linebacker Roger Leclerc was a small price to pay as Ray's Maryland team took it all so 14 more packages will be heading his way. Thanks for the cards ray and congratulations on your "BIG" win!!! Brock Hattox sits still for about 24 hours after I hit his list with a "hodgepodge" of hits and he lets me have it with his own version of a variety pack. You don't get out of Brock Hattox's debt for long, for quite some time now we have flung cardboard back and forth. Each time I get on the other side of being "ahead" in the transfers Brock QUICKLY tips the scales. As is usual I am in his debt again and will be working over the next month or so to find some stuff for him. Does this MO sound familiar to anyone out there. Thanks again for the additions to my collection Brock. Steve Rittenberg spanks my T-218 set with (8) hits to the track and field category. Thanks for the great cardboard Steve!!! Dave Skoglund answers my plea for hits to my quest to narrow my Topps baseball numbers below 1000 with a SCP from the `56 Topps set. Cleveland catcher Hal Naragon finds its way into the binder getting me one card closer. It will be a slow go but I hope to reach my goal by the end of the year - Thanks for the help Dave. Hope you enjoy my return Bob Wells answers the waiver wire call by sending me (4) hits to my `77-`78 Topps Basketball White stock set and a lone `73-`74 Topps Basketball card. Former Piston Coach Don Chaney was featured from both sets - Thanks Bob. Hope you liked the Baseball stuff I sent you in return. Well that does it for the newest additions to my want list. GLENN CODERE - finds another big handful of Film and Radio stars from his local antique shop - to add to my sets and general film star collection - The photos / drawings on these are just terrific and the backs (when they haven't been stuck to another card) are always a source of interesting facts about these entertainment personalities. Now granted 3 were from Ebay/auction or dealer scum deals (OBC somewhat friendly deealers) and the other 2 were from OBC. Linda Fitak sends a 1952 Topps #24 black back Luke Easter with a 1969 Milton Bradley of Jose Pagan (I still have trouble telling the 1969 apart from the 1972 Milton Bradley without going to the reference material). Every so often i get hits to these obscure sets. I just love these ugly B & W pictues with no team emblems on the caps. Along for the ride was an item I had not seen before, a Target issue of a 2 card panel of Dodgers. Based upon the numbering this has to be some set. Neal Thomas sees my plea for prewar Tigers and again sends me a W-516- 2-2 Pep Young. What Neal forgot is he sent me this exact card last month. Although this one is in much better shape. On the strip cards you can "improve" a cards condition by trimming it down more. There is no "exact" size as far as I can tell. Although Pep is the only card I have in the set, I now have 2. Neal, this will be shared with another OBCer, most likely as some sort of door prize for the OBC group outing at the Tigers game on June 8. OBC friendly dealer Kevin Savage, who sponsored the OBC swap session at last year's National, delivered an Ebay win, plus some winnings from 1 of his SCD weekly auctions. Eclectic package of a T-205 Dooin, 1951 Topps Ringside boxing #56 (steve is trying to get me to be more serious on this set), 1962 Parkhurst Hockey Zip card (Steve informed me of this card and since we are both doing Parkhurst I decided to go for this unnumbered card) and the Ebay win of 25 assorted 1970 Milton Braley (these are easy to tell from the 1969 & 1972, and I now need 3 more - see ramble later). Kit Young who has a lot of good stuff that I like, although I do not like his catalog prices agreed to sell me a lot of 1960 & 1961 Fleer Team Logo Decals after no one bid the minimum on Ebay. I now just need the Dodgers to complete the 1961 set. Louie Krumweide who I think I did business with years ago delivers 3 1948 Leaf FB high numbers. These are not quite as bad as 1952 Topps BB high numbers, but close. I only have 6 of the high numbers, but 2 dupes (#50 & 62) available for trade for any I need. 5 packages - thanks given 4th month of year 3rd day of month 2nd year of century 1 card to go in 1961 Fleer Team Logo Decals Thanks everyone. What a super Andy Cook - Andy contributes a 1967 Willie Stargell off his waiver wire. Chalk up one more from that list! Josh Levine - Josh goes the whole 9 yards, or should that be 3500 miles, and personally delivers 3 1960s, a '61, 3 62's, 5 1963s, 4 '64s, 4 1965s, a pair of 1972 hi#s, a '71 Topps Coin and an '82 Kelloggs Steve Kemp. Josh and I had a terrific time last Friday - meeting up late afternoon in Edinburgh, sharing a refreshment, a real nice pizza, and a number of OBC related stories before the Sandman started to get to him (I think he'd only had about 5 hours sleep in the previous 48!). He is such an easy guy to talk to, and I just wish we'd had a bit more time together. Anyway, it's another great memory for me to file away while I await my next OBC meeting.......who will it be next I wonder? Thanks to all of you for great cards, great books, and great company! From: Originaleek@webtv.net Received a very special SCP from Steve Rittenberg, who takes time out from his role as OBC mad hatter to send me a very nice 52T Charlie Maxwell. After spending a respectful period of admiration, I took Charlie to the "Smokey Section" of my basement inner sanctum to place him in his binder. But alas, Charlie didn't fit. Those 52T's are too wide to fit in the standard 9-pocket sheets. Woe be unto me, what a dilemma! Then like a thunder-bolt it hits me. It's not supposed to fit in the binder, it's Charlie's Rookie Card! It belongs in a ridged single top-loader with the gold embossed "Rookie Card" at the top. From there Charlie was placed in the Rookie Card file in the fire proof storage vault (it's really an old apartment sized refrigerator) for safe keeping. If you're still with me, thanks Steve, a great MASH (Much Appreciated Solid Hit) & a wonderful mid-week surprise. Along for the ride were 2 1940 Playballs, a 1965 Sporting News Register (rare hit to the publication list) and my first 1960 Armour Coin of Don Drysdale. Love the oddball item, but Armour Coins are really ugly looking. Steve Ritenberg sends me a package he labels as my NCAA winnings. Now Steve and I have been "arguing" who owes who (we each think we are indebted to the other; what a great problem to have), so to get a winnings package was unexpected. Included were a 1948 Bowman which means I now have 1/2 the set; 3 1950 Bowmans, including 2 low numbers, bringing me to within 2 of the 1/2 way mark and 2 1949 Bowmans, where I pass the 1/3 mark. If you have read earlier week post of BRIAN DWYER and DAVE SKOGLAND, you know that the dent they put into set was down to 190. Well MATT GLIDDEN wasnt about to be left behind in this barrage as he practically sent me a starter kit of the stars from this set. 108 cards to be exact which brings the want list down to 109. But the cards are what are important cause i recieved cards of Perry, Marichal, Brock, Stargell, Robinson, Carton, Palmer, Jenkins, Killebrew, Aparicio, Yaz, Gibson, Williams Hunter, Kaline, Seaver, McCovey to name a few. Somebody had obviously glued Williard to something at sometime during his lifetime. It reminded me of when I had to do a speech in 8th grade, so I choseto do it on Rod Carew. I glued all my Carew cards onto a cardboard posterand talked about his career. I wonder what ever happened to those things.thanks a ton, Spike! Knowles: Next up was Todd with my first Bazooka card (1961), and to make it even better, it was my HOMer - Ron Santo! I don't know if you guys saw the Cubs opener, but Santo threw out the first pitch. Chicago loves him like they love Dick Butkus, so it was sad to hear about his leg being amputated a few weeks ago. He is diabetic and does a lot of work with the foundations in Chicago, but the disease took his leg below the knee. Anyway, he used a cane to go out there and get a big hug from Billy Williams and Randy Hundley before he bounced one up to the plate. He looked great and I wish Iwas still in Chicago so I could hear him on the radio. If anybody belongsin the Hall that's not there now, it's Santo. Thanks a ton, Todd! To: obc-thanks@yahoogroups.com From: Mark S Talbot Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT Hello All, I have been getting ready for the little ones dance recital for the past few days and out of the loop a bit with thanking some individuals for their generosity. Here's what Wyatt the mail carrier brought in the past few days: Our man in Fredericksburg, Dan Austin sends (15) cards from the `69 OPC Football series. These are cards that are not on my want list but Dan insists that I consider adding them to the list. Now anyone who has visited my list knows that I have no business adding another set to my list - but I will consider it Dan - I will need to acquire a few more before I do that though. After some good natured ribbing Bob D'Angelo sends me a baker's dozen (13) cards from a set that looks like `53 Topps cards but for our purposes they will be considered unmentionable. Consider my thanks just the same Bob - and yes this time I did need them!!! The "Duke" of EEK - curator of the House of Maxwell delivers to the Talbot mansion a stack of (50) cards from a set that is very shiny as a pay-off for the Ducks of Oregon defeat of the Texas Longhorns. So two of my wins have "paid-off" and I await one more. The NCAA pool was a fun way to "watch" the tournament. Thanks for the additions to the collection Earl Kilbourne!!! My football card collections gets larger and larger as Gary Mandell helps me to erase a `75 Topps cards and (7) `64 Philly's including Jim Parker and Abe Woodson. I had nearly 500 or so Football cards a year ago when I added the sport to encourage trading. Many sets are close to completion now thanks to guys like Gary - I thank you!!! The California post mark from Edwards AFB means only one thing that another APBA card joins the collection. This time Geno Wagner sends a George Kenneth "Ken" Griffey to add to the others that he has sent. Geno also deletes another Topps baseball card from my list getting me ever closer to the 1000 mark (my collecting goal for 2002), the `63 Topps card of the Baltimore Orioles team is perhaps the sharpest corners card I now have in the set. Thanks for this beauty Geno and getting me one step closer to my goal!!! Once again thanks to all of these contributors and the many who have brought a smile to my face in the past few years. I thank you all!!! BE WELL!!! REGARDS --------------------------------- MARK "Live long and prosper" - Spock * Mark S. Definite OBC specimens and well received here in Southeastern Michigan Dan - I tip my cap!!! From my home state of Connecticut - Bob Corvello sends a SCP to take another `56 Topps back variation off my want list. The gray back of Dodgers outfielder Sandy Amoros takes another card off the list as I get closer and closer to my goal of 1000 or less Topps cards to collect. Thank you so much I haven't heard from Bob Schaub in a while so he remedies that by sending (3) hits to the `56 Topps back variations list and a `60 Topps Tigers team upgrade. As I expected the `56 variations list has seen quite a bit of action and I do appreciate the efforts of guys like Bob who have checked for dupes for me. A few upgrades to my `71 Topps Football set were kindly sent to me off the waiver wire by Ed Schott. I am amazed at the progress that my football collection has undergone since I began collecting them about a year and a half ago. Thank you Ed!!! With a couple more `58 topps off of eBay including the `58 New York Giants Team we chopped off another half dozen Topps cards off the old list and I am grateful to any help I can get for that quest. I know that I owe many people cards and will do what I can to address that issue, thanks for your patience with me and thanks for the cardboard. Fortunately some great OBCers don’t have that problem and were able to send some fabulous stuff my way. Peter Iversen (where have I heard that name?) puts a smile on my face with three hits: one from 1961, one from 1958 and a 1956 Bob Kennedy. I had a chance to play catch with Bob’s son Terry once when I was about 13 and he was attending Florida State. Thanks Peter! John Harrell delivers 2 waiver claims with my first two scoop cards. Mussolini Dead and Hindenburg Burns. I think I’ve seen these cards at Fort Washington before. I might have to start the set. Thanks Bama! I put in a request for some cards from Ken Morganti’s “spam” availables hoping to receive a couple of them. The other day an envelope arrives with a total of 9 cards from before 1955! A 1948 Bowman of Johnny Mize, 3 1953 Bowman Colors, a 54 Topps of Junior Gilliam, and 4 from 1954 Bowman including Bob Potterfield who shares my birthday. Thanks Ken! Ed Schott sends a couple of 1971 football waiver wire claims. Mel Renfro and Bill Bergey. The Bergey card is miscut just enough to allow me to know that O.J. was beneath him on the sheet. Thanks Ed! Dan Austin with yet another waiver wire claim for one of my sets. A scratchoff card of Harmon Killebrew knocking that insert set down to just 3. Thanks Dan! Earl “Eek” Kilbourn sends along a “slice” of my HOM nominee Dean Chance from a recent set. Thanks Earl! Bob Corvello locates the recently added Bowman sets on my list and sends 2 from 1954 and one from 1952. Included in the bunch was Cleveland pitcher Bob Hooper on whose card we learn that Frederick Thayer invented the catcher’s mask in 1878. Thanks Bob! Sean McGowan sends over a 1953 John Sain card to pay off his NCAA debt. And since he couldn’t find anything for Chuck Paris, he includes a 1956 Monte Irvin for my list. I like the way that works out. Thanks Sean! And finally a 1963 Whitey Ford arrives courtesy of ebay to put the birth year set to bed. Thanks to all of those that helped. From: Lynn Miller for Peter to have sent me some very special cards. Obviously being at the far end of OBC, anything coming or going my way is a bit tardy. I was reading about all of Peter's exploits the past few days and enjoying every one of them. It was very heartwarming to again witness so much generosity being spread again. A definite trademark of this group which gets more indelibly stamped as each year goes by. So when I saw an envelope today from Peter as well, I too knew I was going to be pleasantly surprised. But what a surprise. Peter, as a die-hard Dodger Blue man it must have pained you terribly to stuff that 61 Willie Mays AS card in the envelope. But I'm feeling nothing but totally joy, yippee!!! Well Peter wasn't quite done though, along with this hi # came another hi # AS Earl Battey. And these cards are definitely nowhere near the condition we are used to. Many, many thanks for the cards and more importantly for the nice note of friendship that you always express so eloquently. And from Grant's favorite "OBC Friendly" seller "Tiger Dave" comes my last card for my 54T set, the Ernie Banks RC. Yeah, I bought it and must give credit to Steve for pointing me to Yahoo auctions which I don't visit very often. I get a little impatient when I'm down to the last card for the set. Spending my weekdays on the road means that I have to cram seven days of family time in every weekend, which hasn `t left much time for card collecting. I had hoped this current project would be over in early May, but it now looks as though I'll be a part-time Californian through sometime in July. The good news is that I think I've got a structure in place that will allow me to be home at least one week a month. Next week is the test to see if the client will let me get away with that. So, my plan is to do some serious mailings in the next few days. Before I do, however, I need to thank some folks that have sent me cards over the last two weeks or so. Please forgive me - - I really should have posted this before: Bob D'Angelo sent a solo 2002 Topps Heritage (if anyone else is collecting these, please drop me a line `cause I got lots o' dupes); Brock Hattox puts me in his debt (what else is new) by sending four great 1950 Bowmans, including Ol' Aches & Pains Luke Appling and Larry Doby. Ed Schott sent six from 1970, including Killebrew and Bench. Geno Wagner sends a trio that included a 1963 WS card, a 1972 Billy Williams, and a 1974 Tom Seaver; Mike Wierzbicki sends a 1963 Alvin Dark; Neal Thomas chimed in with four 1954 Bowmans (including Kuenn and Gilliam) and two 1958 Topps (including Burdette); Peter Iversen sent six from 1968 (including Colavito), a 1970 Vida Blue/Gene Tenace, and one each from 1974 and 1975; Steve Rittenberg sends some non-sports beauties from the 1951 "Fight the Red Menace" and 1938 "Horrors of War" sets. For those of you unfamiliar with these sets, I offer the following quote from one of the Red Menace cards: "Communists make trouble wherever they can. They are killing and destroying in Malaya. . . . Instead of being gratefull for the packages received I was a little down because there wasnt anymore to open. First big puffy package I opened was from TERRY DIETRICK who although not said is paying off his NCAA tourney debt (a least i am counting as such) with what he says he "found off my wantlist". His few included 50 cards for my 73 set and 4 off my 82 set including common players named Seaver,Brett, and off course a guy named Smith. Thanks Terry for the "few",:-) #2 comes in a trade with JOE ISSAC who I beleive is in Dan's VCT gtoup who made a trade with me. With old age creeping up on me (49 of thursday) I remembering trading with him just cant remember what I gave him but he returned with another 24 of my 73 set. Thanks for the trade Joe> BILL MALSON can attest to my mind going. I received from his waiver wire 3 beautiful 61 including Julian Javier. He wrote his waiver wire request a week ago which i promptly responded too on the same day and again yesterday when i saw it for the second time and responded again. Of course most of it will have to be mentioned on another email but I can mention the nifty Toledo Mudhens sked. Us diehard Tiger fans may have to travel "south of the border" to the fair state of Ohio for some "real baseball" - but they did give the Twins fits this weekend didn't they. There may still be hope for the old Tigs yet!!! I will be removing the sunglasses soon but I must still thank John for such a nice package. The Tiger list will be hit back soon John!!! BE WELL!!! Yesterday was a GREAT day. Three packages, all with great hits. In order that they were opened: The Rookie, Sassy checks in with 4 hits to the slowly shrinking 1952 Topps BB list. Two were low number Red backs, a "common" and a semi- high number. For some reason, I am especially weak in the Semi-high numbers (#251-310). I am down to 164 in the set, of which 91 are High numbers. 39 are from the semi high numbers. Thanks Sassy and how about putting together a wantlist of your own? Lynn Miller sends a package that took me a while to figure out. I am over due an Ebay package from Canada. First glance at the return address, I thought it might be it. Return name was Norm Miller, not Lynn Miller, which through me. Upon opening it, found a dozen 1969 (not to be confused with the 1972) Milton Bradley BB cards. I now have 66 towards this set. Eventually this set will make it onto my OBC list. Love these oddball issues. Linda Fitak delivers a FB package. A UV UD FB Legends card of Sammy Baugh, a Fleer FB Immortal card (another great obscure issue) and then a 1953 Bowman FB appropriate #13. Linda and I had corresponded over the last month or 2 and she promised to get me a 1953 Bowman FB card on my list. I never knew until today as to why she set that as a target. It is not a set that I am that close on yet (still need over 20 cards), it is not a birth year set (8 years to early). I never knew why. A couple of months ago, Tim (Linda's hubby for the uninformed) was looking for info on an Uncle who played back then. I did some research and called Tim and we chatted. This was a thank you, above and beyond. The envelope was also a typical Linda envelope with some old stamps including 2 of the 1969 Football issue (follows the theme of the package). Thanks Linda & Tim. What can I say? Thanks seems insufficient for this bounty.
