But Mac hits my WL about as hard as he does his own, and probably more often than even I do !!! He mailed yet another beauty during his recent onslaught, my haul being a T205 Edgar Willets !!!!!!! Mac noticed that the portrait of this Tiger hurler makes him look meaner than Cobb!! I'll bet we won't be seeing the Willets biopic on the silver screen anytime soon, but this card will be seeing the showcase that houses the rest of my T205 collection very soon !! Thanks never seems like enough Mac. Glenn Codere knew how to make my day on Saturday...by disguising his generous offering in a "Legends of The Game" envelope. How about this an autographed 8x10 of my HOM nominee Phil "Harmonica" Linz !!!!!! Glenn had the seller pass the item directly to me, with the note "From Glenn in Scotland"...this is a great item, a pic that also shows Yogi holding his fingers in his ears as Phil plays his infamous mouth harp ! I love it !! Thank you Glenn from Scotland !! Older public thanks go out to Spike Glidden, Ed Schott, Steve Rittenberg , Andy Cook, David Kolenda, Richard Hankins , Gary Mandell, Todd Knowles and James All of those guys above deserve a public mention to go along with the personal one that I mailed upon arrival. Among the goodies stuffed in the postal packages were nice hits to 65 Topps (pennant fevers), high 70 Topps (cool greys), a McCovey from 71 Topps ( black beauties) , 62 Topps (Woodies), 53 Topps ( need a nickname), and the great 71 FB set !! And then LYNN MILLER follows up with a late "birthday" present: another "Uncle" Fred Sanford card, this time a 1950 Bowman! Thanks Lynn- I'll get Uncle Fred to autograph it next week. To: obc-thanks@yahoogroups.com From: Mark S Talbot Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT Hello All, I had to write all of you to LYK that I made a bit of a mistake in my last posting of appreciation. It seems I thanked Dave Kolenda for a nice little box of RC Cola cans and in fact it was DAVE SKOGLUND who popped those babies in the mail to me. So let me get it straight this time - a mighty big thanks goes out to Dave Skoglund for the box of cans that I will be taking over to Mike Rich's house so we can split them up (Mike as I mentioned is a bit of an expert on these types of collectibles). While I'm at it let me thank Neal Thomas who sent a package today with many unmentionables and some curious tobacco issues, a Sweet Corporal issue with a WW1 scene on it and one from Canada with wild flowers. Neal also included a W516 card of Heinie Groh which increases my collection to 3 cards - all from OBC'ers. Thanks Neal and Dave I do appreciate your generosity and it will be repaid. BE WELL!!! Rick Redpath, Curator of The Tipton Mint, sends a card that apparently did not meet his standards for "signs of affection." This 1959 High-number Chick King lookslike no kid has ever been near Jeff Delott sends 19 from 1958, including several low numbers. And finally, a stack of cards was handed to me last night at Ray's Steak House on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, Louisiana. I was in the Big Easy on a short business trip and I had the great pleasure of dining with Major Matthew Shirley and his charming and beautiful bride Belle (she of Ryan Rookie Christmas present fame). The good Major handed over 1970 cards of guys named Clemente, Stargell, Fingers, Gibson, and Rose; 1971 rookie cards of Munson and Foster with another Pops thrown in for good measure; 1972 nosebleed cards of Steve Carlton and Ted Williams, and a 1973 Pudge Fisk. Saturday is against the Devil Rays, and Monday the Phillies will be in town. I have been to 4 different major league stadiums, but this is my first trip to spring training, and I am ready to go! I have both the camcorder and the regular 35 mm camera ready to go, hopefully to return with some nice shots of Clemens, Jeter, Giambi, and maybe even David Wells if I canrecognize him since he has supposedly lost so much weight. But before I leave, some big thanks are in order: JOE SWEET - for 6 much needed 65's, a '56 Bill Wight, and wow! a '58 rookiecard of former Yankee Ryne Duren, my HOMer. BOB D'ANGELO - sends an absolutely awesome box with 3 cards from 1968 and then over 100 cards from the early 80's through about 1990 for my sets. These are all very much needed. One interesting card was a 1982 Jerry Koosman. He was with the White Sox by then, and had won almost 200 games. I think it is neat to take my '82 Ryan and my '82 Koosman, and then put them next to the '68 card that they shared. How times change. At least for Ryan, he had a better looking uniform in '68 than that hideous Astros sunburst thing that he was wearing by the time '82 rolled around.... Bob also sends a seperate envelope containing 4 more 81 Topps. Thanks so much to these fine gentlemen for some wonderful cards !! Both were 1955 Bowman high-numbers, one was an umpire card. The other card was of a fellow named Stan Jok. I've never heard of Stan Jok before, and something made me decide to look him up. Here's what I found: Stan Jok entered pro baseball at age 20 after serving in the Navy during WWII. He bounced around the minors for eight years before making the Phillies' roster in 1954. After three games in the show, he was back in the minors, this time with Memphis. He hit .307 with 17 HR's and 85 RBI's for the Chicks in 1954 and got called up for three games with the White Sox at the end of the year. He saw action in six more games for the White Sox in 1955, but that was it for his big league career. Stats: 19 AB's, three hits, four RBI's, one homer, no stolen bases, four runs scored. As a third baseman, he fielded 16 balls cleanly and booted one. He turned one double play. He died at age 45. Thanks Neal for the cards and for the research project. ================= Date: Fri, 08 Mar 2002 00:10:39 -0000 To: OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com Subject: Another big day From: "rayluurs" Today mail brought the rewards of two trades I was involved in AL CROTTE starts it out with 4 58's, 5 71's and a 1966 Philadelphia gum card of Don Chandler. The "Mandell Group" from Chicago chimes in with a great assortment of Mets and Yankees from north of the border, including a 71 Hodges and 79 Valentine. Looks like I'm going to have to sort out that wantlist now. Thanks Gary, cool stuff! Cards are slowly making their way out, and my wantlists are a mess right now. Hopefully I can get them squared away this weekend. ================= Date: Sat, 9 Mar 2002 19:57:24 -0500 (EST) To: OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com Subject: 1966 put to bed! From: Neal Thomas Hi all- Thanks to two OBCers, my 1966 set is now complete, except for upgrades and some variations. Linda Fitak and Mark Talbot combine to knock off my 1966 set on the same day. Linda sends Horace Clark and adds a 51 Bowman to boot, and Mark sends Grant Jackson and adds some 60 Leafs as well. Thanks to both of you, who will live in infamy on my webapge! In other incomings: Brock Hattox sends a great package of cards from many years, including pre-war. First thanks to all who sent me their thoughts and best wishes. No test results yet, but will keep the group informed if it is worth mentioning. Last Monday, March 4 I received another nibble on teh 1950 Bowman set from Doug Smith. Thanks Doug. On Wednesday, I was chained to the house, prepping for more tests and recieved 4 OBC packages. A perfect day to receive them. Gary Mandell started it off with a hit to 1974 OPC BB team checklist of the Braves (tough set) and 25 1981 OPC BB. Andy Cook delivers another blow with a 1951 Topps Red Back of #24 Hank Bauer (4 more to go), accompanied by a 1948 Leaf BB #139 (picked up a few of these recently - now have 13) and 2 1961 Nu-Card Scoops (getting close on this set as well - 4 to go). I may do more trades with Andy than anyone else in OBC. Close competition with Steve, Brock and Mark Talbot. Al Crotte gets thanks on 2 fronts. Al offered to come up from Ohio if I needed some help due to the medical problems. Another touching gesture from an OBCer. Fortunately I am not yet at that stage, plus have local family and friends, but the offer was touoching. Then Al also gets hero status by putting to bed the 1972 Basketball stciker set. These came 3 to a "card" and the last one included, Jerry West, & Reed. 2 HOFers on 1 sticker. I have been working on that set for 30 years. I had seen the sticker before, but was always deterred by the price. Al parted with this from his singles collection and he is also working on the set. So major thanks Al. The 4th package was from Brock. That should say enough, but here goes - 3 1949 Bowman (puts me at having 30% of the set), 3 1950 Bowman, including a low # (I now have over 100 in the set)& 17 (yes 17) 1941 Playballs. For those of you who do not know, there are only 72 in the set. So Brock was 1 short (what is the matter with you Brock?) of sending me 1/4 of the whole prewar set. Of course he included 3 high numbers. The fav of the group was a Barney McCoskey, as my fellow Tigers fans will back me up has local fame status. What a haul. I join the long list of people indebted to Brock. Last week or so, there were rambles about nicknames. The 1941 Playballs list the nicknames on the font. Some of them are great. Check them out. Last thanks goes to the gremlin finder. As many of us has noted we think we have completed a set only to find a gremlin came in and took a card or 2. I recently have found a few missing gremlins, finishing (or is it refinishing) a couple of sets, including the 1963 Topps Stick-ons (Aparicio had got mixed into the 1961 Magic Rub-offs). I would now like to work on a dupe set of these and upgrade teh Kaline, but the set is done. One time when I was going to broadcasting school I meet Howard Cosell; the man literally took the air out of the room and I couldnt even get the word out to ask a question. Today DAN AUSTIN took the word right of my mouth and I have having a hard time to giving proper thanks. Dan writes that he never gave proper thanks until to day for some cards I gave him around Christmas time. They were dups and he needed them; never thinking anymore about it, as most do here. Today i get a note from dan attached to two toploader inside taped what was a slew of card touching every year I had listed on my wantlist. In side the toploader was the most beautiful 59 card of Dan"s favorite player Sandy Koufax ( i cant take my eyes off that one) and on the other toploader was a 1973 Rod Carew (ine of my favorites). Inside the toploaders was 6-1958 including two team cards, 3 minor star named Wertz, Craig and Antonelli along with a an allstar card,Along with Koufax he added 6 more from 59 including Antonelli again Tanner, Maglie to name a few (dont want to make this a rambling:-), a 1961 of Hank Bauer, 63 of Jim Pagliaroni, 2-71 of Bill Freehan and a team card, 4-73(along with Carew) including Tigers Horton and Brown) and three -81 including Johnny Bench. My mouth is still hanging and Thanks seem quite inadequete for the stash I just recieved. Thanks Dan hopefully this weekend at the card show I can find something for your wantlist that will take your breathe away just like these did. Always good stuff and this was no exception. He finishes off two football sets with a 79 James Lofton rookie and a unmentionable card from two years later. He also added two from 1976 to bring that list down to 3 and a baseball card from 1963 of Whitey Herzog. Whitey along with Boog Powell who I just won off ebay brings the 63 set down to just one card. Anybody have an extra Whitey Ford?????? Thanks Steve. Gary Mandell also sends along a football/baseball combo envelope. He upgrades 4 cards from 1970 including the “Birds Wrap it Up!” game 3 card featuring the aforementioned Boog catching the last out. He also adds 1 tipton beauty and 7 pack fresh football cards from 1968. One interesting card of note was Rick Redman (not Redpath) who was a Linebacker/Kicker. Can you imagine any of today’s kickers playing linebacker? Thanks Gary. Finally I receive a package from Don Rice who has my vote for the best ebay dealer. I won a small $3 lot from Don and read his “about me” info. He mentions he’s a collector not a dealer so I asked him if he would be interested in a trade. He then finds some cards on my wantlist in what he calls “way-off condition” and sends them to me along with my ebay winnings. His envelope arrives before I even got a chance to mail his payment and some cards I found for him. Here’s what he sent: 48 Football cards from 1968-71 including Dawson, Nitschke, Eller, Olsen, and Tingelhoff, 5 1972 3D baseball cards, a 63 Whitey Herzog (again, anybody need one?), 5 woodies including two world series cards, 4 from 1959 (high number, Aparicio all star, and 2 baseball thrills), 2 from 1958, a high number from 1955, 4 from 1953, and 6 Bowmans from 1955. Of course just about every card was VG or better. He’s looking for more people to trade with so if you’re interested send him an email and mention you’re from OBC. Paul Biggs who found me through the OBC site sent along a 62-63 Parkhurst Hockey, a hit to my 1972-73 Quaker Oats Hockey (and you guys thought prewar was obscure) and 30 OPC BB cards. These might constitute UV but since they are Canadian issues and he is from Winnipeg, the discount makes this post acceptable. The true thanks is for a huge package from Greg Yaz Conway. Greg sends the next to last 1954 Bowman BB I need, Duke Snider. Only Yogi Berra to go. Yaz had warned me about the condition, but it was much better than I expected. Then he nailed the list of 1953 Topps with 13 hits, reducing me to 40 to go. The hits included 2 high numbers, a bunch of Yankees, including Phil Rizzuto. Again I was warned about the condition. I do not know what is sadder (funnier) the Tiptonesque condition of the cards or how well they fit in with my 1953 Topps set. I wonder what a complete set of 1953 Topps Tipton would go for? Thank You Greg for parting with these singles. In the last week I have received at least 2 packages from OBCers that contained a card(s) that were singles of the senders. Granted I sent some enticements, but I would like to thank Al Crotte & Yaz for helping me to complete 1 set, get within 1 of another and knocked virtually 1/4 off another wl. Steve Rittenberg went shopping again at the Ft Washington show and "happened to have my WL". He hit the 53 Topps set with a fervor. I needed 6 now only 2. But he sent me the 2 toughest on the list, Campanella and Martin. Now he says the Martin is an even up trade for a UV Jeter he needed. Huh!!! Maybe he thought he was sending me an Al Martin card :>) His list is much tougher than mine, but I just have to find something to get even, if I can. But that's the fun of this whole experience. Thanks my good friend for some fantastic cards. 2 more easy ones left, time to go shopping on eBay. Mike Rich and I were a little worried about a package that he sent me quite awhile ago. Well USPS didn't fail, even though it looks like they tried a little. This was a huge haul of Hank Aaron stuff. The things I can mention here are a 61 Topps stamp, 75 Topps minis #'s 1 and 660 (and these are really great), a near mt 76 Hostess still on the strip 2 other players, a blank card issued by the Braves for those in attendance when he hit #500 in 68, and finally a really unique item. A bronze coin with a terrific relief of Hank. It's from Baseball's Centenial Series 1869-1969. I don't find this one in my Beckett so I would appreciate any information on this really nice item. So off I went to my BB encyclopedia...Preacher was traded from Brooklyn to Baltimore at the end of '54, and never appeared in another game...127-84 over his career...not too shabby! Bama hit me with a well-loved '57 of Billy Loes, and since the encyclopedia was already open....he was a teammate of Preacher in Brooklyn for several years, then was traded to...you guessed it...Baltimore, in 1956. To: obc-thanks@yahoogroups.com From: Mark S Talbot Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT Hello my friends, I watched a few B-Ball games over the past few days and fell away from the computer and my responsibility to send out some thanks - so let's get to it. First off - long time trading friend Dan Austin sends a well loved SCP of Celtics B-Ball forward Don Nelson from the `70-`71 Topps set. It has been a while since a "big" card has come in and I enjoyed reading it. With the NCAA tourney around B-Ball cards are quite appropriate. Thank you my friend!!! From the other side of the pond, Glenn Codere sends (29) British Tobacco issues that portray various means of transportation. These are very COOL and I never dreamed that Glenn would send me so many. These come from 2 distinct series of cards and comprise 29% of the entire issue. I will enjoy looking through these Glenn - I thank you!!!! Incoming from the "House of Maxwell" fellow Michiganian Earl "Duke" Kilbourn releases to me a `59 Topps Gray back of Del Ennis and a `60 Topps white back of Don Blasingame to further reduce the cards I need to the 1000 mark for those `52 - `80 Topps issues. EEK also includes a selection of (7) hits to my 2001 Fleer tradition set which is further detailed on another server The Mandell group, headed by that trader extrodinaire Gary Mandell slides a couple of slices of history my way. A very nice `65 Topps card of my Hero Norm Cash and a `75 Topps upgrade of the Mets team. Just need a "nice" MVP #202 to finish my upgrade quest on this "classic" set. Great additions Gary - Kudos!!! Kevin Martens send me a nice size puffy with an unopened pack of 2002 UD cards to accompany 36 cards from the 2001 Topps Heritage set. More on this can be found on the appropriate server. I do appreciate the effort and some "vintage" stuff will be headed in your direction. Major Matt Shirley sends a surprise package of (3) `65 Topps cards with Harry Walker, Carl Willey and Bob Friend. As I announced earlier in the month I will be focused on bringing the Topps want list down below 1000 this year and these (3) move me ever so closer. Matt and I have been "surprising" each other since Matt joined Dan Austin's group VCT in Oct. of `99. I always like to hear from Matt and look forward to putting something together for him. I salute you Major Matt!!! Finally, Mac Wubben strikes again with the "GREEN BAT" version of the `67 Topps card of Paul Schaal which we had a number of discussion on the rambling server about. Its just the upper portion of the bat but it is definitely green and so am I after Mac let me have this card from his dupe box. Yet another off the old Topps list - Thank you OBC is alive and well and all of the members who helped me this week - I thank you. Its the way things work in OBC I got out 3 or 4 packages this week and receive 6 or 7. I don't believe that I will ever really catch up but I keep trying. Thanks to you all whether we sent each other cardboard or not - I appreciate the whole group. BE WELL!!! REGARDS --------------------------------- MARK "Live long and prosper" - Spock * Mark S. Brock Hattox takes a swipe at my newly-added 1968 list by sending three mint cards, including Tommy John and Clete Boyer. Mac Wubben send a single card - the 1958 Mickey Mantle All-Star card. Holy Cow! Gary Mandell sends a great package from the 1970's, including high- numbers from '71 and '72, a '73 Jim Kaat, a '75 White Sox team card (with that goofball Chuck Tanner in the corner), and some commons from each of those years. And finally, an in-person delivery from Erik Greenwood. I hooked up with Erik very briefly at a show in California (I'll post a report on the Ramblings server). Even though I was 45 minutes late due to the crazy LA freeways and my own poor planning, Erik gave me a plastic box with 14 cards and not a common in the bunch. There were high-numbers from '71 and '71, a '75 Frank Robinson, a '68 Willie Stargell, two '74 Hank Aaron cards, teve Carlton cards from '70 and '73, and a '70 HR leaders card. We got dumped on yesterday tho'. Nearly 30 inches in 24 hours! That is a record for Anchorage. I shoveled my tail off. Put in about 5 hours of snow tossing. Got back last weekend from two weeks in Dayton, Ohio at Wright-Patterson AFB for some training. Nice place. I really enjoyed the Air Force museum. It took us tree days to see it all. And I still did not make it to the two annex hangers. But, while in Ohio, picked up some cards and met up with another brother in OBC, Greg Kuhn. Greg lives in Louisville Kentucky. We talked on the phone and after a few directions, I made it to his very nice house in a great part of town. Greg is good people with two wonderful boys and a nice wife. Greg and wife are raising those boys well. They were friendly and very polite. Greg took me and the two boys to a local flee market where my wallet took a hit. We found one cardboard dealer with just about everything I needed. I picked up about 100 hi # '70s and a few other odds and ends. Nearly tapped out at the first table. Amongst other tables at the market were much NASCAR. If you are in to that, hit that place. Before making it to the market, Greg nearly gave me free range of all his dups, plus handed over a 1960 Topps starter set of about 200 cards! Very cool, except, that adds to my dwindling wantlist. He also hit my list with some '69s and 70s. After the flee market, we stopped by the Louisville Slugger museum!!! Now this was a neat place. On the tour we seen how they make the bats for the MLB and other sports. They make hockey sticks and golf clubs too. We seen some bats that belonged to current MLB players. Biggest name I seen was Craig Counsell, a once WS hero. All in all a very neat place to see. We had a pretty full day. The whole time Gregs sons were very good. I could tell they were getting tired of our outing, but they never acted it. Greg has done a great job. If you know, Greg is an Asst. principal at a high school in the Louisville area. I was surprised at how young he is. I remember my asst. principles in school and they all seemed old and crotchety! Go Greg and good luck in your career. I wish the best for you and your family. I have pictures I hope to send out soon of Greg and I. When I returned to AK, had two OBC envelopes awaiting!!! Don Metz hit me with 5 '74s, one is a Tanana RC. Thanks Don And, Trader Smith hits with 3 more from '74. Gives another lickin' to that set. A see a couple of Dodgers, Yeager and Garvey and a Killebrew. Thank you With OBC, life is good. Bama delivers out of the blus a 3 pack, including a 1936 Diamond Star and 2 1949 MP & Co. cards. This set was recently added and is completely OBC so far, with 5 cards. 1 of the cards Bama sent was most of the Berra. (A corner iece is missing). Since I only have 5 cards and Brett Domue is close to finishing the set and needs Berra, it has already been forwarded to Brett (in exchange for more 1949 MP & Co. cards). So thank You Bama,Brett & OBC for the great start on this set. Bob Donaldson delivers a promised 1950 Bowman BB #163 in a SCP. I now need less than 150 for the set. I have targetted this set for the set I expect my biggest improvement on this year. Thanks Bob for contributing to this effort. Yesterday brought 2 more packages. John Storman who gets a triple of my secret 1975 Topps BB list. This set is being built to replace the only singles set I sold to help pay for grad school. This would complete (except for variations and upgrades) 1954-1992 Topps. The WOW package though came from Kevin Martens. Kevin knows that I am one of the bigger hockey collectors in the group (although I think Steve Rittenberg is trying to challenge me for the title). I need less than 100 Topps cards to complete Topps from 1954(first year) - 1985. I am also making great strides in OPC hockey (25 cards plus 1974-5 & 1976-7 to complete 1968 (first year through 1985). Parkhurst is the main manufacturer that I do not have. Kevin delivered 15 1957-58 Topps, 1 1958-59 Topps, 12 1959-60 Parkhurst ( I only had 12 & there are only 50 in the set), 7 1954-55 Parkhurst (this set comes with back variations, text or a Lucky Premium ad). I am only missing 2 cards to complete the set, but want to get the set with both back variations. The 7 all had the text variations and left me needing only 9 more to complete the set with text backs only! Then the coup de gras, 10 1953-54 Parkhurst. There are only 100 in the set. I had just over 1/2. Now I have over 60% and feel like I can make major strides on this set. this would be the oldest Hockey set I have, if I can complete it. Kev, I will do my best to properly repay you. Thanks OBC for the tremendous help in the collection. Very interesting stuff Greg, thanks for the surprise. Lynn Miller hooks up with a `53 Topps card of Yankee pitcher Ewell Blackwell. Just another card closer to my goal of 1000. Along for the ride were (12) cards from a very glossy set. I love them all Lynn - Thank you so I spent a few hours over at Mike Rich's house tonight and we had a bit of a swap meet. I had been planning the assault for a few weeks and blind sided Mike with some surprises but I didn't leave empty handed. After some great conversation and stories Mike handed me a stack of (13) `72 OPC-CFL cards that bring my want list down to 23. Then Mike helped me identify an "oddball" hockey set and then coughs up (2) `77 Topps Hockey inserts featuring Cheevers and Sittler leaving me with just one to go for the set. Then it's off to the Bowman dupe box for some "beautiful" cards from the `49 Bowman set with Emil Verban, Herman Wehmeier, Johnny Schmitz, Gene Bearden and Frank McCormick. The first four cards are really really nice!!! A couple of St. Louis Browns from the `50 Bowman set were pulled Ray Coleman and George Stirnweiss. Finally, Bucky Harris from the `53 Bowman B&W set round out the stuff I came home with. I enjoyed the evening and look forward to our next get together. Thanks for your hospitality Mike - it's good to see you feeling much better. John Storman begins a trade and single handily adds about 100 cards to my list as I officially add the `51 Topps Red Back and Blue Back sets. John send me a starter lot of (6) Red Backs and a single Blue Back. A few years ago I would have never dreamed of starting this set and here I am starting them off. I thank you John, even if it means that I must admit being certifiably insane for adding yet another Topps set. Keith Summers who must have a memory like an elephant, he sends me (2) `70 Topps Posters featuring Ron Santo and Johnny Bench. Now Keith reminds me that he owes me these for a couple of Ollie Brown and Champ Summers cards that I sent him. The thing is I sent him those cards like 6 month or more ago. Nothing wrong with your long term memory Keith - Thanks for a couple of hits to a set that hasn't seen one in ages!!! Finally, "Trader Doug" Smith responds to my quest to get below 1000 Topps cards by sending me a "well loved" `52 Topps card of Billy Johnson. The envelope is franked with a nice Ty Cobb stamp as well. I was quite surprised Doug with your SCP and thank you for your kindness. I thank you all so much for your kindness!!! A couple more packages got out today - a return lot for John, another one for Brock and I will be working on a few more. I'll be in touch with my "quest" update at months end. BE WELL!!! I have thanked Peter, but wanted otehrs to know of his assistance on a difficult set. Now for the GOODIES. Mark Talbot came over yesterday. Mark has been to the house a few times. Usually he leaves with a little more than he came with. Not yesterday. He had informed me that he had some RC Cola cans that he knows I collect. He starts pulling them out of a HUGE box. Do you need Rose, Brett, Palmer, Bench, Yount, etc. He had 27 cans to choose from and I needed 12 in the 1977 set, including the aforementioned superstars. Then he pulls out some UFM (unidentified flying metal). A bunch of UV cans that cards came in (Pinnacle & Upper Deck). Who knows, we think he gave me a complete set. He also knows I love Slurpee Cups. 2 direct hits to the 1972 set (which is not even posted on my OBC list - YET). He also left a few Tiger/Piston Stadium plastic type cups. A few vintage, oddball, & UV hockey later (my nephew is a Red Wings freak and will end up with a few cards), 2 T212? Mecca Champion Athlete & Prize Fighter Series (my first) and then he pulls out his Bowman single sbox and says go to town. 18 1950 Bowman later (including 2 low numbers), I was almost too embarrassed to continue. I said ALMOST. He then brings out a dupe binder of early 50s material that I find a 52 Topps, 53 Topps & 53 Bowman Color that I think will be upgrades. Yikes ALL this just because #11 Southern Illinois beat #6 Texas Tech (and Bobby Knight). (just kidding Mark, I know you expect payback for the UV material!) It happened to be a 1948 Bowman FB sp #102. Sp in 1948 Bowman FB start at $100. So this was quite a surprise. I am down to needing just 13 sps to complete the entire Next up was a typical Brock BB package. Just 4 cards. 1948 Leaf BB #136, 2 1949 Bowman high numbers and 1949 Bowman #98. Usually I get more phone calls on Monday than any other day of the week. The upside is that the mailman often has extra packages to deliver on Monday. Yesterday was no different as 3 fantastic OBC packages arrived. Jim Hatch surprises with a SCP of 1943 MP & Co. #16 Medwick. I now have 1/2 the set, thanks mainly to OBC. A year ago, not only did I not own any, but I could not have even identified what they were. Picked up 2 or 3 in a Toronto bargain bin, put them on the OBC wl and now have 1/2. Great. Lynn Miller once again sends a package. I finally was able to find something on Lynn's list a month ago to thank him for hits long ago. Now he nails me with 2 1974 Topps Team checklists, a 1960 Leaf BB #58 Smith. This card has multiple variations. A 1953 Topps #77 Mize (a nice hit) and 2 1952 Topps BB. These look great from the front. The backs are another matter. How do you grade a front PSA 8 and a back PSA 1? The last package also contained some fun stuff from marshall West. 1 1962 Post CFL (only a handful of OBCers collect this set), a 1963 Post BB #127 (I now need 20; 90% complete), 3 1962 Jell-o, including 2 Tigers (I had 4 cards, now 7), 4 1963 Jell-o, including Ashburn, and 5 1962 Post Canadian BB (I recently passed 1/2 way on this set and am pleased with the progress). These were paybacks for an earlier package I sent. Then Marshall sent me a 1952 Bowman (small) FB #23 Marchetti Rookie. Not only is this a very tough card, but it is 1 of the last 2 I need to complete that set. (just #131 Rapacz to go). Only need 52 more Bowman FB to put the entire run to bed. Spike delivers a waiver claim of a 1956 Topps white Back Virgil Trucks. This is nice claim since I am down to under 10 in the white back/gray back chase and Trucks was Tigers hero. Thanks Spike. Steve Rittenberg blasts a slapshot at my Parkhurst hockey list with 6 from 1951-52; 7 from 1952-53 including a couple of Red Wings and 4 from the 1953-54 set, including George Armstrong. I am actually making progress towards the 1953-54 set, need 36 of 100. The other sets - I only had 6 1952-53 before this and 6 1951-52. So more than doubled 1 year and did double the other. Great. Steve wrote that HE still OWES ME. I love a guy that is delusional like that. I had no idea he owed me before and then after these hits, he claims to still owe. New math. I love it. I didn't see them until last night when I was preparing to pay those "bills". Well, what did I discover but two envelopes from OBC. One was from Richard Hankins, who now has repeatedly smacked my Maxwell wantlist & did it again with a 59T and a 55 Bowman TV. Thank's for the cards and for being a great OBCer. Speaking of a great OBCer, the other envelope was from one Steve It contained my new #1 prize baseball card possession, over taking my 58T Mantle, Williams, Aaron and Mays cards that were tied for that coveted spot heretofore. It's still hard to believe that I do in fact own a 1954 Topps Al Kaline RC. WOW!!! Steve got it for me at a very reasonable price (I don't know how he does it) and the condition is also very reasonable. Not sure what a "professional" would rate it, but to me it looks like a 12. It is safely ensconced in my locked Rookie Card file in my locked baseball card sanctuary in the House of Maxwell basement. Thanks Steve, much appreciated. Today there were 13 messages in the digest... about the normal number, but there's definitely something NOT normal about the digest itself. I was just reading it and noticed that Geno's message (#9 in my digest) was dated on Monday. It's right in the middle of a bunch of messages dated on Friday. Jeff Delott's message (#4) is also dated Monday. Now this wouldn't be too hard to accept - some messages I've sent to my other screen name on AOL have taken a couple days to get there. Then I read the thanks from Bama (#12), which is dated TOMORROW. How does John know what he's going to get in the mail a day in advance? and on Easter Sunday no less? I don't know if I'm more jealous of the fact that he knows what card he doesn't have to look for on eBay that morning or that his postman delivers on Sundays. Wait a minute... what if I'm just getting tomorrow's messages today? I've gotta subscribe to lotteryreport.com now.
