================= To: "OBCTHANKS" Subject: Saint Al Date: Fri, 1 Nov 2002 06:58:25 -0600 From: "David Kolenda" A weeks worth of thanks to St. Al. Al checked in with a phone call a few days When Al was out here for the Natl. he had made comment that my old pennant collection was missing a Seattle Pilots pennant. Low and behold, yesterdays mail brings a very nice vintage Pilots pennant, a group of 49 bowmans, and a card from Al. Thanks Al for all four items, starting with the phone call. David K. ================= Date: Fri, 01 Nov 2002 10:50:05 -0500 Subject: Thank You - Thank You To: airal6 From: Mark S Talbot Hello All, A few more things came in that I need to tell you about: Dan Austin allows me to play "clean-up" with his recent offerings of "oddball" TCMA cards. Dan sent me a big old puffy with (17) White Sox, (16) Twins, (11) Colts, (17) A's, (7) Angels, an Oriole, some tobacco reprints, some canceled stamps, some stuff I don't know about and (17) retro Basketball cards of current players. Quite an interesting "oddball" package - just the way I like 'em!!! Thanks Dan!!! Andy Cook sends to me a SCP of Carlton Willey from the `63 Post set with an unusual "sunburst" color scheme in the background. Andy recently pointed out that he was doing some research on color variations from the Post Cereal sets which peeked my interest. Thanks for a very interesting variation Andy - I look forward to your research. Al Crotte gives me about a week to breathe and then he hammers me again. You see Al sent me a monster box of `80's Football quite some time ago and he told me to just send him some trade fodder for his dupe box if I couldn't find something on his list. Well, those of you that know me are aware that I won't settle for that. So after quite some time I finally was able to put together a package of vintage football, soccer and basketball which are Al's collecting passions. I was pleased to "settle up" with Al - but apparently Al will have nothing to do with that. Today I unpacked another amazing offering from Al, he sent a `58 Topps Football card, a `59 Topps Football card, a `60 Fleer Football card, (4) `68 Topps Football cards, a `70 Topps Football card, (9) `71 Topps Football cards, a couple `73 Topps Football cards, a couple more `74's, he finishes my `75 Wonder bread set with (2) hits, (9) `77 Fleer Football cards, (2) `77 Topps football cards, (4) `78 Topps football cards, an `81 Fleer card, a single from the `71-72 Topps basketball set, another from the `72-73 Topps basketball set, (5) from the `73-74 Topps basketball set, (22) hits to the `74-75 Topps basketball set, a SCP from the `77-78 Topps basketball set - one from white backs and one from the gray backs, a single from the `78-79 set, (28) cards from the `79-80 Topps basketball set and finally (48) hits to the `81-82 Topps basketball set. I am again indebted to Al to the total of (147) addition hits to my want list. I can only hope that after Al completes the task of updating his want list I will be able to thank him properly with an adequate return. Your generosity is overwhelming Al. Bob Donaldson sends a SCP variation from the `72 Kellogg's set of Dave Roberts with NL references in the Bio. These sets are hard enough to get but with the variations they are maddening. Thanks for easing the madness Bob!!! Brian Dwyer smacks the UV quest with (27) hits to the 2002 Fleer Traditions set, including Bonds, McGuire, Sosa, Giambi, Galarraga and others. For good measure Brian includes a `96 Topps and ships them all out in a #10 envelope. Way to go Brian!!! I keep trying to catch up with the incoming flow of generosity and always seem to be fighting a losing battle. I just can't seem to make enough time to get all the stuff out that needs to go out. But I am not giving up - if I owe you be patient as I will get things out to you eventually. So thanks to you all for your generosity and patience. I added a second (upgrade) set of '79 and '80 Topps...considering many of the originals were the ones I pulled from packs as a 7 year-old, it seems like a step I can make. I also added the 1963 Fleer set to my wantlist, and it was a timely addition, because along comes a waiver wire envelope from JIM BEAUCHEMIN that lets me take off the first card. Strike #9 from my newest list, because Ray Herbert has found a new home. Herbert's card has a nice note on the back explaining that he has been in the majors since '49, and finally registered a 20-win season in '62. With a 78-77 lifetime record to that point, it was a good thing, The card goes on to mention that Herbert came to the Chisox in 1961 as part of a 6 player trade between the White Sox and K.C.     Mike Rich and I (as he already reported) spent some time together on Sunday at a local show and we picked through some OBC gems and filled our dupe boxes.  I pulled about 50 cards from the old want list including about 7 or 8 for the Topps quest.  Mike however handed me a plethora of "oddball" that had me drooling.  He saw me looking at the wad of Milton Bradley cards that he was pulling at Mike Sandles show last month and this month he brought most of what he had pulled and gave them to me.  So I guess I am thanking Mike for adding yet another set to my "never" dwindling list - Thanks I think!!  Now Mike does not stop there because he hits me with another sizable stack of Dell pictures that I believe were on large sheet that could be cut out and placed into team books.  Yet another set to explore!!!  A bunch of other stuff including an oddball Norm Cash card for my HOM collection from the Dearborn show, Mothers Cookies, `63 Bazooka of Cap Anson, Cain's Chips Tigers, Drakes Big Hitters, late 80's Bazookas and plenty of other stuff.  Mike is well aware of my passion for "oddball" and I will have tons of fun looking through this stuff.  Thanks Mike for the stuff but most importantly the company on Sunday.
Long time trader Joe Sweet hits the mailbox today with a `77 Hostess card and a bunch of UV stuff from the late `90's.  A few from the `54 Archives set of gold cards - Thanks a bunch Joe!!!  Welcome to OBC!!!  I still have to get a welcome package out to you.

First 3 great hits to my 1954 Bowman U.S. Navy Victories set, leaving me with just ONE left! That's pretty close :>) Then he takes the low card off my 66 list, the Murcer RC leaving only those hi's now, YES! And then a real Tipton Mint of a 63 hi of Killer. This is a real gem. I'm wondering if I can remove the tape safely enough to realign this dis-jointed card so the lettering matches up on the reverse, and then retape it :>) And if you ever needed a good example of "well-rounded corners", this would be it! But to top it off, Steve finds 2 pretty obscure vintage cards of my hero Hank, two 1975 SSPC cards, a puzzle piece and a sample card. There was another card of Hank, but can't mention it here. Three hits to the Hank List, Yoweee!!! Thanks so very much Steve for the great haul. Rob sends me a hit to the 51 Topps Redbacks with Yankee great Hank Bauer. Super nice too. But even nicer is a vintage Hank that I already had, but definitely Rob's is an upgrade and most gladly accepted. My tipton version will be a great one to find another deserving OBC home. From: "Robert Reed"

Packages from the last couple of weeks…..

Bob Donaldson helps out the 1972 3D set with an SCP of Tony Oliva. I
learned from the back of the card that his name is really Pedro Oliva and he
borrowed his brother Tony’s passport to enter the U.S. from Cuba in 1961.
Thanks Bob!

Linda Fitak sends 4 of the few remaining commons I need for 1958 and 59
including two former Yankees, Al Cicotte and Tom Morgan. She also upgrades
one from 1970 and includes that great Tiger Rookie from 1970, Bob Reed. In
addition she sends a World Series article from the LA Times that Dean Chance
wrote as a guest analyst. Thanks Linda!

Mike Rich sends 11 Kellogg 3D cards from 1971, one hit and 10 variations.
Tommy Davis knocks the list down to one while Mike tries to get me to go
after the copyright/no copyright variations. We’ll see about that. Cards
included Siebert, Sutton, Perez, Fregosi, John, and Gibson. Thanks Mike!

Joe Sweet sends over a nice SCP for the 1956 set; Walter Alston. The
background shot has Walter giving the slide signal but I’m not sure he’s
facing the right direction. Thanks Joe!

Al Cummings sends a Bowman Bonanza.  Twelve hits to 4 different Bowman sets;
1 x 1950, 2 x 1952, and 8 x 1955, Eddie Joost and Eddie Yost included.
Also one from my favorite Bowman set, a 1953 Color of Jim Busby. Thanks Al!

Richard Kimball just about wipes out the 1976 Wonder Bread Football set.
Ten out of eleven hits led by Yepremian and Harris. He also throws in a Bob
Griese 1975 Wonder Bread. Thanks Richard!

Al Crotte sends over a monster package of miscellaneous football cards. Six
from ‘78, 5 from ‘71, 17 from ’68, 20 from ’60, plus 36 Wonder Bread
including the same 11 the Fugitive sent. 86 cards in all with names like
Craig Morton, Jack Snow, John Mackey, Paul Warfield, Franco Harris, and Alan
Page. Thanks Al!

Thanks Guys and Gal and if anybody wants a 10 card 1976 Wonder Bread
Football starter set let me know.

-Bob R.

p.s. For those that I’ve promised to send packages too I’ve finally got
some put together and they’ll be going out by the weekend.

I need to catch up with a few thanks to the OBC clan:

Joe Sweet sends three very nice 1957s. I find it hard to believe that the ones you kept are nicer than these.

Brock agrees to let me continue to shop from his want list. He send four colorful 1941 Play Balls my way in addition to a 57, 62 and a 64 NL ERA leaders with Koufax.

Brian Dwyer and I continue to swap cards with a couple of 54s, a 63 and a couple of 62 Yankees showing up on my doorstep.

Trader Doug send a couple of "saved from the fire" T206s my way( Kinght and McQuillan) along with a much nicer card of Willis with a polar bear reverse. Along for the ride was a 39 Play Ball of Sylvester Johnson. Can't say I have ever know a Sylvester.

And Lynn Miller sends yet another package my way. A career piece of my HOM nominee--Jim Konstanty (this is after we traded email stories). A great photograph on the left with his lifetime stats on the right--highlighted by his magical 1950 season. I suppose I will have to frame this one and explain my HOM nominee with a ramble!

thank you to everyone in OBC--I have sent out a bunch of packages over the last month. I have heard that most of the packages arrived safe and sound--but I am curious about the 8-10 packages that I have never heard anything about? Let me know.

Thanks again,

Three packages make their way to Florida (not so sunny
today, but looking a lot better since we didn't screw
up the elections this time...).

BILL MATSON sends a five-pack of '70 and '71 Topps
hits, including Felipe Alou.

After I asked him to take a post-80 card off my hands,
AL CUMMINGS responds by sending me an all-Bowman
package. 4 hits to the '51 Bowman set -- including
Sid Gordon and the immortal Sandalio Consuegra -- and
seven from the TV set, including the even more
immortal Eddie Waitkus.

But Al wasn't as underhanded as BOB D'ANGELO. After
sending a recent waiver wire '73 Kelloggs card his
way, I let him know that no return fire would be
necessary, since I still owed him for an earlier
package. Instead, Bob puts me further in debt by
sending a '73 card of Nolan Ryan.

I guess I'll just have to buy a flak jacket if I get
any more return fire that heavily...

Take care,

came in the mail today. From Bob Farrell comes 3 hits to my main Tigers
list, bringing it down to just 17 to go!!!
Now, I know Rhode Island is small, but I didn't think they had their own
mini cards as well. Evidently they do though, cause Bob also sent a
"wallet size" 59T Pitchers Beware featuring Kaline & Maxwell. The
dilemma is, do I put this "variation" in my Kaline binder or Maxwell
binder. Usually HOFers take precedent but being Smokey is my HOM guy??
Since Steve Rittenberg seems to have been instrumental in my obtaining
this card, perhaps he should advise me. At any rate the cardboard is
greatly appreciated Bob. Thanx!

Way back when I only had one baseball card binder, the cards were arranged
best to worst. I constantly switched the cards around as I traded for what
I considered to be better and better cards. Well, thursday's mail brought a
card that would still go on the front page had I maintained that method of
organization...a 38 Goudey Joe Dimaggio. Jeff Sackmann sent the beauty my
way for some realatively obscure player who happens to have had two stadiums
names after him. Jeff was kind enough to throw in 5 53T's as well bringing
the 52-80T list close to the 500 level. Thanks Jeff for adding a gem to my

Another great arrival this week courtesy of Erik Greenwood. Erik adds to my
fledgling Lajoie collection by contributing a red version of the parker bros
game card. I had been looking for this one for a while. Thanks Erik!

Subject: More thanks (especially to Ken)
Date: Sat, 9 Nov 2002 08:39:35 -0500
From: "Steve Rittenberg"

I received a couple of great packages yesterday. Brian Lindholme went shopping
with my OPC baseball list and found 9 hits to my 1966 & 1975 sets. Nine
may not sound like a large number but it cut my 1975 list in half and included
a 75 OPC Joe Morgan. Bob Farrell send me a puffy to follow up with
his assault on my 1975 list. This time its Harlem Globetrotter cards. Bob
cuts that list in half with nine hits.

And I need to expand on my earlier thanks to Ken. Spike and I went over to
his house on Sunday. Ken made at least a dozen trips upstairs to retrieve
boxes for me to look through. He and Spike helped me look through his 1980
& 1976 dupes. Ken sorted those by team order and I didn't have the team
written down so I put them through lots of extra work. On top of that,
Ken gave me a bunch of 1977-78 grey back basketball cards including Jabbar
!!!! As we looked through my weekend haul, Ken identified a couple of tough
variations hidden amongst all my commons. I'll be looking for a newhome
for those. After telling Ken about my team card quest, he pulled out
about 10 beauties including a dealer scum 1967 White Sox high number. He
also let me take his whole inventory of Golden Press cards and British Cigarette
cards (for distribution to others). And this happened all while Ken
was trying to (a) enjoy a football game and (b) get some sleep. Finally
he threw me out. Luckily he let me carry my cards instead of throwing those
as well. THANKS KEN!!

The NW chapter of OBC has been telling many a story lately...some true, andmany
more twisted, bent and adjusted....
First off, the truth is that there are great guys in the chapter , and theyare
obviously married to saints....not saints themselves...
But they are certainly capable of a miracle or two.

During my recent Canadian trek, Big (not Saint) Al dropped off a very nice puffy
full of high number cool greys and woodies which was delivered by Mike
in Grant's kitchen. Thanks Al !! I know that your ears were ringing, and not
all of the conversation was bad...really! Big Al is one great OBCer !!

I had a blast hanging with Grant & Mike for the Big One in wonderful Vancouver
BC !
Cost me a ton of M&M's when the Angels came back from behind due to a very annoying
stuffed ostrich that Grant substituted for a Rally Monkey. I don'tenjoy
losing money on bets, but I sure don't like losing M&M's....I hope the
bird gets stuffed fleas.

I got another look at the Rainsley Manor museum of OPC, CFL, NHL, Parkhurst,
Coke caps and even some Topps cards...The man has a cool collection ! I was
bunked in the John Wayne Suite, where only the royalty usually gets to go.
Thanks Grant !!!! Oh yes, Grant gave me a stack of baseball cards after
disappearing with my WL for awhile. I really appreciate the cardboard, but
honestly, it's a whole lot more than that !!!!!!!!

Mike nonchalantly left a great puffy of 53Topps for me...in way nicer shapethan
their binder buddies, but I'm keeping them anyway ! Thanks for takingthe
wheel for an hour or so...and arranging the trip in the first place ,Mike.
I'm also drinking some of that Island Coffee Ltd brew on a rainy Oregon
Coast saturday. You Da Man !

Since my return, I've been so bombarded at work, it's hard to believe that this
trip was two weeks ago !!
Surrounding this event was a scattering of OBC envelopes that I hope I havealready
thanked guys for...(I try to do that right away...but anyways...).Bob
D'Angelo, Kent Goto, Mac Wubben, Mike Wierzbicki,Peter Mead have all chipped
in mightily with cards and friendship. This group is simply spectacular

Thank to all !

(2) 1961 Topps and (6) 1964 Topps. Naturally, a great assortment of oddballs

Subject: Trio of Goudey's arrived!
From: WMDpks@aol.com

I've actually had these cards for the past week and I really got a kick out of all three. Geno Wagner sends John Ogden and George Grantham from the 1933 Goudey set with the note "When these came out, the Cubs hadn't won a World Series in 25 years!" Also, Trader Doug Smith passed along a 1933 Goudey Alvin Crowder, noting that my online want list requested cards from that set in Fair condition, so he inflicted enough damage to the card to bring it down to my requirements. Each of those three cards has a few creases, rounded corners, and small pieces missing but as far as I'm concerned they're just perfect.

Thanks very much, guys!

From: Lynn Miller

I was able to get a "dealer scum eBay" deal from the iggy-man for one of
my 61 Topps hi's George Altman. So I send him the payment and took the
opportunity to make it an OBC package with just a couple of cards from
his list. Well I get my eBay winnings in the mail today and he included
"a couple of extras had just laying around" How about a nice 61 Topps
Frank Robinson AS card, another tough hi card! But that's not all. No
doubt the 52T Mantle is the toughest card on my list and I realistically
don't hold much hope out for it anytime soon (as with a lot of my cards
:>). But I figured the rest are obtainable, just some pretty darn
tough ones. So my #2 toughest card WOULD HAVE BEEN the 63 Rose RC. NO
MORE!!! I mean I'm still awe-struck from getting both the 60 Mantle's
from Kent recently and now I'm groping for more words to express my deep
gratitude for another supreme act of generosity. Ignacio, you've made
an old veteran very, very happy today. One day after I made a solemn
trip to our National Cemetary here in the Philippines to honor our brave
brothers and sisters who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country
and it's freedoms. I hope all of you perhaps took a moment to remember
our true heroes. Thank you so much Ignacio for you kindness and for
being one of my heroes as well.

From: "Steve Rittenberg"

If you haven't ever received something from Linda (and Tim) Fitak, you needto.
Her packages are legendary, both inside and out. On the outside ofmy
envelope from Linda is a Chaplin stamp, a 4 1/2 cent stamp of the Hermitage
(I went there!) and a 1/2 cent stamp of G Washington. I'll have to see
if I need the older stamps for my long dormant stamp collection. Inside
the envelope is a '55 Hank Sauer (which I will send to my "cousin" Jim Rittenberg,
a Freedom's war card and a bunch of misc stuff. There is a "Nobody
Beats the Whiz" Mets card here. If the cat doesn't eat it, I'll forward
this one to Sal. *grin* Plus there is a card which might be of Mike
Greenwell. All the card talks about is when someone interviewed him iabout
a fight he had with another teammate. I wonder if this is an "official"
card. The Red Sox logo on the player's hat is replaced by a boxing glove.
Another card in here is of Maryilyn Monroe. On the penny sleeve holder,
someone wrote "Steve's New Girlfriend". She's my type, all right:beautiful,
drug addicted, mentally unstable, adulterous. I think I may have
dated her reincarnation several times. *grin* And on the back of the
envelope are a couple of "Easter Seal" type stamps asking me to support"the
US Anti-Communist Congress". The address provided is for downtown DC
but it may be a Starbucks now.

And the biggest package ever? That came from Jim Wiehe. Cable TV can beeven
more addictive and less productive than cards so no cable for Steve. But
each year the AMC channel runs a 4 day "Monsterfest" where they show nothing
but (mainly) old monster movies like Frankenstein and Dracula in the
week before Halloween. Somehow Jim and I got talking on the subject andthe
next thing I know, Jim has offered to tape the entire four day programfor
me. In years past, I've received tapes from Chahta and Neal Thomas as
well. It will be great fun to open these up and see the old favorites and
discover some new ones. Monster movies are another thing I can be just
as passionate about as with cards.

Thanks again Jim & Linda. Thanks OBC!!

I almost missed it, but hiding among my bills and junk
mail was an SCP from ANDY COOK, who sends along card
#1 from the '67 Topps set: "The Champs" with two HOFs
named Robinson and their manager Hank Bauer (who
played against another HOF named Robinson in a few
World Series).

Thanks guys!

From: Robert Neill

Spike hits me with a trio of 76 hostess "commons". Commons you say? Yeah,
one was some guy named Aaron--that name was so common there were at least
two of them playing in the majors when i was growing up--Tommy, and his
brother, what was it, oh yeah Hank. The second common was the father of
this year prize Reds call-up, Pete Rose Jr. How uncommon is that--two guys
with the same first and last name. The third common is some guy named
Ryan--heck he's so common I have cards of him in ever set from 1968 up
until around 1994--name anyone else who showed up that often (ok, that
other common guy named Rose)

Thanks Spike

Then Lynn Miller hits my 64 and 65 list with some big baseball names in individual,
leader and World Series cards the likes of Marichal,Drysdale and Koufax
and a rookie card or the first Japanese player whose name I can neither

idea the Senators had ever played in a world series. Second, this 33 card
must have been released after the series, cause the facts are correct. Fred
Marberry was a relief pitcher back when there weren't many of those. Jesse
Haines who won 2 world series games against the yankees in 1926 ,,,must have

From: Mark S Talbot

Hello All,

I had some incoming mail arrive recently that needs to be announced to the group.  So kudos are in order to:

Dan Austin blasts me with a hodgepodge of "oddball tobacco" cards from the UK and Germany.  These are non-sports cards, I have been secretly stashing a bunch of these away and may someday actually get serious about them.  I've been doing some reading on them thanks to a book I got from Steve Rittenberg.  Thanks for these very cool items Dan!!!

Oh it's a grand day when you receive a letter from Northridge franked with grand "vintage postage" and Boysville stickers.  You quickly get the letter opener out because you know you are about to experience the joy that a "Fitak-pak" can bring.  As always Linda Fitak sends some grand old cardboard that brings my numbers below 100 for the final push toward 1000 Topps cards to go - For the quest Linda sends a `52 Topps Monte Irvin card and a `51 Redback of Andy Seminick, of course they are accompanied by the usual cast of unusual items like Target Dodgers, Marilyn Monroe and Kobe cards.  Linda it is always a pleasure to receive your mix of cardboard pleasures, I look forward to the next one.

The Fugitive - Richard Kimball slaps a few `70-`71 Topps Roundball cards my way including a nicely trimmed Oscar Robinson card.  Slowly but surly the Basketball and Football issues that are the most recent major additions to my list are dwindling down to attainable sets.  Thanks Richard!!!

I am so pleased to announce that thanks to the contributions of Linda and Trader Doug Smith I am below 100 cards to go.  Doug floors me with (4) hits to the `51 Topps Redback set, with Pollett, Parnell, Kokos and Valo.  These were all well loved peices of cardboard that will continue to be loved, I especially like the one that looked like it got a bit too close to the campfire.  These are now added to the list and I love each and every one of them.  Thanks Doug!!!

One of our new trading friends Chris Stufflestreet slips me a nice envelope of (6) `02 Team Stickers including my beloved Tigers.  I hope that the reunion of Tram and Gibson will put a charge back into the team.  Thanks Chris - I still need quite a few more of these team stickers (hint, hint)

I received a (6) pack from Marshall West today of `02 Post Cereal cards with Giambi, Green and Glaus to name a few.  Marshall also packs in a very cool sked for the Wildcats of Weber State University.  Muchos Gratis Marshall!!!

So to these fine traders I say thanks and happy trading to all.  BE WELL!!!

This is to one of my 1953 Birth Year quest sets - a 1953 Johnston Cookie of Brave Ernie Johnston! Looks like new - a cherished addition to the year of birth groupings - Thanks hugely RICK SVETECZ - finds a 8x10 Dodger Sign with "Rifleman " Chuck Connors in a Dodger uniform on the cover! This is the first I have of him in that uniform - I loved watching him and Johnny Crawford when I was growing up - and it is great to have him on a large piece of cardboard. Rick also sends my first Wheaties card - this one is of the 1952 Variety and of Preacher Rowe. Great stuff Rick - Thank Q! STEVE RITTENBERG - sends another great haul my way! Steve found a card for a couple of my lists that he graciously dealer scummed to me - a 1938 heads up Goudy of Van Lingle Mungo - and then he loads the package with some other great stuff - namely a 1962 Bazooka of Big Frank Howard a 1934 Batter Up of Van Mungo! a couple of 1972 Blank Backed and oddly shaped Dodgers - Osteen and Pena (were these from an advert or...? Looks like they were cut from a cereal box..) and finally a couple of TRUE Tipton examples of Dodgers - a 1933/T20Goudy card of Tony Cunccinello (REALLY Trimmed) and a 1959 Topps Bilko Bulls Eye card (trimmed around the circle and pasted to a piece of cardboard!!) I love these last ones especially! I think I am going to specialize in SUPER Tipton Dodgers - trimmed and REALLY mangled..! Thanks for getting me started in Vegas and here Steve - and thanks again for all the other great stuff..! MIKE WIERZBICKI - graces me with a BEAUTIFUL 1953 Bowman Color card - this one is of Giant Jim Hearn. These cards are really amazing to me - and each one I get feels like a minor landmark! Thanks Mike so much for sending along another piece to the puzzle and making it 67 on the I HAVE JOSH LEVINE - knowing Josh I am certain that he purposely sent me TWO of the 1955 Bowman cards I needed so he could take my want list down below 100 cards - yep... it's at 99 cards and looking great! Josh sent along a Wes Westrum and a Strickland card for the set. Thanks Josh - love them BIG AL CUMMINGS - has made my month with MUNGO..! Al not only sends me over 15 HITS to the Van Lingle Mungo list - but he also sends me a WANT LIST for this oddball song/set!! Al researched all the players for me and found all the cards that were in print for me...! I have to get some time to ADD this to my page. I will have to see if I can get a LINK to another page since many of these cards are post 1980 reprints and special old timer cards (is that Possible Steve..?). In any case Al outdid himself and made me forever in his debt with some beautiful (the nicest 49 Bowman card I have for one thing) cardboard. Here are some highlights - 40 & 41 PB Geo McQuinn, 49B Sain & Pollett, 76/77 HRT/RES of Sain, Caveretta, Pollett, Galan, McQuinn and Ruth/Speaker/Cobb - Also a 33 Goudy of Heinie Meine and finally a card I need some help identifying *** A Stan Hack card form Cuba (Los Reyes Del Deporte) card #63. Al thinks this is from 1945 or so - Anyone know where I can get a list of how many cards are in this set - and who is on them?? I would appreciate it! *** Al - you have made Van Lingle and me very happy.... DOUG DEJONG - Finds a lovely Fleer card for my 70's Fleer sets - this one is from Baseball Firsts - how the Knuckle Ball came to be - interesting to read and lovely to look at - a fine card to add to the growing set - thanks a lot Doug! RICHARD KIMBALL - I think the Fugitive knew that I was about to send out my monthly thanks and after being on it last month 4 times he figured he had to make sure he was on it again! I found a puffy filled with Dodgers - newer and oddballish but all appreciated! Especially the one of Maury Wills! Thanks again for thinking of me Richard!! All in all another satisfying month - makes picking up the mail worth it! I love OBC! Thanks to all of you this month and past months and I am hoping that I will be able to do some wholesale sending to hit you all back real soon...!! Last week, being a short week with Veteran's Day and gtaking Friday off (well most of Friday off) to go to Toronto with Eek and Ron Perry (long long ramble to be issued on that) resulted in a very busy week. So these thanks are a touch old. Last Tuesday, I received 4 packages: Kev Martens does a pre- Toronto SCP of a 1959-60 Parkhurst Hockey Stewart card. I did not get any 59- 60's in Toronto. Lynn Miller is trying to start and finish me off on the 1969 Milton Bradley set. Lynn sent me an approx. 200 count starter earlier this year and hits me with another 40, including finishing off the team header cards, Clemente, Reggie jackson (this is a cheap rookie card ofr those interested), Banks, McCovey, etc. Howard Morgan must have been in contact with Lynn because he sends 34 more 1969 Milton Bradley including Cater & local fav Dick McAuliffe. This tag team gets me down to about 15 to go. Dupes have been going to Mark Talbot and he has a nice starter set going himself now. Dan Austin saves some poor Hostess panels before someone cuts them up for me. The 1975 Hostess set is down to 3 including variations, so he knocked 1/2 off. Along for the ride was a 1961 Topps Stamp of Minnie Minoso and 23 pre-Toronto hits to the 1974 OPC BB list, getting my 1965-1980 OPC BB list under 500. Upon meeting up with Earl & Ron just the US side of the Canadian border, Ron presents me with 2 1941 Playballs, including a Dutch Leonard. Also want to thank Ron for Saturday dinner, Earl for Saturday Breakfast (including picking up the tab for my sister who housed us), and for both guys for their companionship, bird dogging some vintage tables and advice at the show. Upon return from Toronto were 4 more packages in the mailbox. An Ebay win of a 1954 Bowman BB #161 Yogi Berra to finish the set, other than variations. A Coke cap buddy of mine sends along a Packers cap, a Bears cap and the last 10 MLB All-Star caps I needed to finish that set (2 sets finished by mail, only 1 set finished in Toronto, Hmm). Marshall West sends a few skeds of Weber State and a 1979 Hostess Panel featuring Dave Parker. The Fugitive sends 1 of the last 2, 1970 Topps Super FB of Cook. Down to #5 Post. Thanks to all. I think many of these were "reciprocity" packages, but after Toronto, I have packages that will be going out to over 1/2 the people mentioned above. Need to really thank these fine OBCers for some great stuff: While all the hits were very significant of course, Steve's stands out just a little bit. Even though this was a dealer scum pkg, it ain't often that you can come across a really key card. I've been through all the wantlists in OBC a lot of times and there are a few cards that show up on just about everyone's list. Steve made me a fabulous offer on the 67 Seaver RC that I simply had to take, and I'm most thankful that he presented it to me. This is another of those cards that I thought would be out of reach for a long, long time. But this past month has made me a firmer believer in the power of OBC!!! And this brings up something that I've been meaning to mention for a long time and just told this to Dave Fallen. I think all of you know my situation living in the Philippines. Just ain't nothing close to cards over here. So my only access has been the Internet. I can't go to card shows and find those great deals on cards. So what I'm saying here is that if anyone finds anything on my list in true OBC condition that a dealer has at a reasonable price, don't hesitate to contact me and see if I'm willing to pay something for it. I can use anyone's eyes that is willing to volunteer. A true gem from a great OBCer!! Jeff can't be studying too hard there at U of Wisconsin. He loads up on my short 61 list with 4 very sharp ones (and I mean that these would receive a genuinely high PSA grade if we were so inclined, which we ain't). These are stunning and really out of place in the high section of my set :>) But I'm not aware of reprints for these guys including one of my Braves Johnny Logan, so they must be the real deal. With Johnny out of the way, I'm getting almost as close as Mike in getting all the Braves cards. Who's got an extra Phil Niekro RC :>) Thanks Jeff for some spectacular hits. Bob Reed completes his end of a trade with a super 52 hi of Milton Stock. You know how we all love these cards, so another real treat here. Muchos gracias Bob for filling another tough hole. And Mike Rich has made it a personal goal I think to knock off as many of my vintage Hanks as he can. This time it's a great 71 Topps Super card. This is a really beautiful card and it's even hermetically sealed, a first for me and pretty neat. Thanks so much Mike for another "biggie" of the Hammer. Joe Isaac also finds another great vintage Hank item for me, the 65 Topps Embossed oddball. And in super shape as well, untypical OBC. But very much appreciated anyway :>) Thanks a heap Joe for another treasure. And although Ron Kingsbury aka "The King" is no longer a member, we've remained very good friends. And today he also sent me a beautiful 8X10 color vintage autographed photo of Hank. It's always Hammer Time ! Thanks so much my good friend. This was quite a mail day with super hits and wonderful Hank items. I'm so thankful for having such a great group of friends. Well Gals and Guys:

Hand in hand with our mild weather, the fog has rolled in and multiple OBC pkgs.
as well have arrived over the past 2 weeks. Thanksgiving rapidly approaches
and I am always thankful for the OBC group - ramblings to read, wantlists
to check, St. Al to keep track of - there's no end to it!

In no particular order -- Lynn Miller - you can't stop the guy, don't even try
- sends me a blast of '54 cards, INCLUDING #1 Williams, all under the pretense
of honoring my 54 years! You know him, whaddaguy, formerly hailing from
Diego Segui, Mr. Miller now makes his home in the tropical paradise ofthe
Phillipines, where beautiful hats and vintage cardboard seem to abound.
Thanks Lynn! AS usual, you dah man...

Next in, another PacNorwester, Mr. Dave Fallen, graces me with an bountifularray
of '57s - WAY nicer than the usual suspects I have in my box. Dave, very
kind of you to send these color versions of ballplayers my way. Thank You!

Prior to Dave, another Dave, Kolenda variety, sends me some '70 FB Vikings and
some more of the lovely '54 Topps cards. Dave brokered a large box o cards
for me, then included some of his own. Dave, when you get those cards of
yours organized, keep some for yourself! Thank You!

Trader Doug Smith passes a card from one of my favorite sets, the plain yetelegant
'39 PB - this one is of John Peacock. Doug, thanks for thinking ofme
- the card is much appreciated!

Not to be slouching in the card passing out category, Geno 'Astronaut' Wagner
weighs in with a brick of cards - nearly all are HOFers and inteded for the
Tipton Wall. Geno's generosity and love of cards is well known, but where
the heck does he get all those APBA printed gems? Geno, amazing haul ofcards
for 'dah wall'. Thanks so much!

Hope I haven't missed anyone - looking forward to OBC Santa time - that toois
fast approaching!

Some overdue and new and future thanks---

Past thanks:
First, newer member Gary Mandell hits the old Phillies list with a very nice
'67 Phillies team card. Thanks Gary, condition was exactly what I like.

Big Al crushes my '55 Bowman set about a week ago with nearly 10% of the
set!! Thanks Al...WOW!!

Kent Goto hits my friend's '71 wantlist with three nice cards. Michael sends
along his thanks.

Current and Future Thanks: Lynn Miller amazes me with a great package all the
way from overseas that includes nothing but hits to my Phillies list. Many
people complain my stuff is too hard to find but Lynn managed to find some
wonderful cards including a Berk Ross, MSA disc, '53 Redman (Roberts!!), an
obscure collector issue (also Roberts), and 3 '55 Bowman hits. The best card
he sent was a very nice birthday card (it is coming up). Thanks Lynn...

Geno Wagner sends an "Oldie, but Goudey" (his bad joke, not mine!) of Milton
Gaston from the 1933 set, along with his trademark APBA playing card which
he's been sending out for about a decade. Joining right in step in the Goudey
parade was Big Al Cummings, contributing a nice array of 1933's and a 1934
Goudey Tony Piet. These were very welcome additions to a growing group of
beautiful prewar cards. Also, Jim Hatch sent along a few hits to a rarely-hit
list of mine - a 1975 Topps Mini of Bob Apodaca and a couple of 1977 Hostess
cards including my personal hero in the late 1970's, Frederic Michael Lynn.

Thanks so much - you guys are too good to me. As always.

To: OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com
From: WMDpks@aol.com

Yesterday a jaw-dropping puffy envelope arrived from Kent Goto, which
contained 177 Topps 1975 Mini cards in razor-sharp (no kidding!) shape. That
was not a typo, and I did not mean to write "seventeen" - it was actually "a
hundred and seventy-seven" cards, all of which were on my want list. That's
over a quarter of the set! It really came at a great time to relieve a huge
amount of job-related stress (IBM). I had kept the cards I already had in an
old vintage cheese box made of thin wooden slats, and was about to give that
set up for dead because I was so far away from completing it and hadn't made
any progress lately. All of a sudden I've got a jolt of a jump-start and it's
now my top priority to finish collecting the 1975 mini's. Recently I
completed the 1954 and 1955 Bowman sets and had kind of a let-down because I
wasn't actively pursuing any particular set, but now I'm back on track!

I used to try to see how often I could send out 10% of a set, I think I once
sent 25 Topps 1954 cards to somebody and 60 Topps 1968 cards to someone else.
This is by far the largest group of cards I've received that I've needed and
wanted badly.

Thanks so much for breathing some life into this tired old collector!

Geno Wagner is back to baseball with an APBA Mike Marshall (p). Ok trivia
time...when Al Jackson gave up the HR to Hank Aaron...newly aquired Mike
Marshall came in to relieve him, wearing # 72 with no name on the jersey.
Damn I have a load of useless info in my head! Oh yeah, a 78 Eddie Murray was
also in the package, putting that set nearly to rest with this major
aquisition!...Thanks Geno!

No one obviously likes 1960s as Bill Malson nails down 3 more including
Yankee Eli Grba (who???) I'm really loving this set more and more!... Thanks

Everyone's favorite dealer scum, Steve Rittenberg annihilates my Batman list
with some black and blue bats (which is what my wantlist looks like). He also
hates 1960 as he sends 29 including Whitey Ford and my fav, Joe Pignitano.
Joe was 3b coach of the Mets and was famous for growing tomatoes in the
bullpen. For the Dodger set, Johnny Podres. Now my 68 list is getting really
tough, but Steve slams that one with 4 including (get this) Lolich, Mays,
Palmer and Clemente! Wow Steve, thanks loads.

And rounding out this 4-bagger is Kent Goto. Two people I was afraid of at

you know what I mean-- Men on a mission!). 6 cards, 3 60s/3 68s. The names?

LOTS OF STUFF IN ....ONE SET COMPLETED, AND ONE DOWN TO A SINGLE CARD!!!!

A MAJOR Thank you goes out from Glasgow today to the irrepressible Steve
Rittenberg. Steve sends along a 300 count box, which included not only a few
auction items he's been holding for me, but also a few other bits and
pieces. Get this....

8 1960s (incl.Gibson, WSG3, 2 hi#s)
100 (yep...one hundred) 1961s (5 new hits - Piersall & Cepeda - LOTS of
18 1962s (Kaline,Cepeda,Babe,Fox,5 hi#s, and.......Willie Mays!!!
and.....Mickey Mantle "The Switch Hitter Connects"!!!)
22 1963s (Freehan RC, Mathews,Roberts....and 3 homemade 1963 minis :-) )
34 1964s (Brooks, Frank Robby, Berra,Allen RC - most of these, and the 1965s
to follow, are of the lesser known "updated" version of the set where each
card has been lovingly and painstakingly renewed with the players most
recent team name by a young child....or perhaps by Steve himself!!)
21 1965s (Bouton, Hodges,Boyer,Santo)
2 1968s (Maris & Clemente AS - only #490 (Killer,Mick,Mays) to go on that
2 1977s (Rose, Twins team)
2 1970 Kellogg's 3D - Brooks & Freehan
2 1971 Kellogg's 3D - Torre & Short
whew! Still with me? OK, there's more....
A 1921 Neilson Lu Blue
A '71 Dell Al Kaline
An unidentifiable Herman Pillette (Pitcher,Detroit Americans), resplendent
in his roll-neck warm-up jersey

Tired of baseball? Well, how about this?
A 1969/70 Topps Gordie Howe
3 1968/69 Topps hockey

As I mentioned earlier, Steve also included some auction items that he had
taken delivery of on my behalf. These included:
1967 Jim Palmer & Bill Monbouquette
1970 Frank Robinson & a 1970 Pete Rose - THIS COMPLETES THE 1970 SET!!!!!!
4 semihi# 1960s
A nice '61 Curt Flood
2 hi# '62s
2 hi# 63s
1 hi# '64

AND FINALLY!!!!!

I also received an auction win from Sims Classic Sports which included a '75
Ryan, 7 1967 hi#s, and 11 1963s

What an amazing start to the weekend!!! Now if only Scotland's rugby team
can build on their terrific win over South Africa last weekend with a win
over Fiji on Sunday (I'll be there!), I'll be an extremely happy man on
Monday morning!!

Cheers for now!

Hi gang,
Well, you might not know it from my recent inactivity, but my computer has
not crashed... or been stolen and hosed down with a fire extinguisher for
laughs. I have a few semi-recent inbounds I'd like to send out thanks for
(one of them came in today, so they're not ALL really late). I may have
already sent out a note about these, but I'll be safe rather than sorry. In
no particular order:
Bob Farrell sends a puffy with about a dozen hits to my 72/73 Topps hoop
set including a bunch of AS cards, playoff games and Kareem! THANKS BOB!!
Bob Schaub sends an envelope that appeared to have hat fund money in it at
one point. I'm in the process of collecting appropriate sized boxes to start
mailing some of these out. After the holiday rush, I vow to send out the rest
of them along with (hopefully) some accompanying cards. THANKS BOB!!
Peter Mead adds four tall boys (70-71) to help that set along including a
LL card and Earl Monroe. THANKS PETER!!
Al Crotte spreads almost a dozen hits across three different hoop sets
including one AS card and an NBA championship recap. THANKS AL!!
Finally, the most recent arrival (today) comes from the infallible Dave
Fallen. Dave sent an SCP that made me say 'Wow'. Actually, any time I get an
envelope in the mail nowadays I say that. My shrinking T205 set loses one
more name from the list with the subtraction of the Suberbas Pryor McElveen.
I love filling the empty spaces in that binder. THANKS DAVE!!
Now for the infomercial part of this message - you too can see your name
in this space for the low cost of a few baseball cards! I have recently
started yet another Topps baseball set (#2). I don't want to post the list on
the web until the people who really feel they owe me get first crack at it.
If you feel you're part of this group, why? Oh, I mean I'll help you ease
your 'guilty conscience' by sending the current wantlist upon request only.
Now back to your regularly scheduled thanks reading. TAYL,

Ken M

It has been a real inspiration over the last three weeks to feel again the
wonderful goodwill of OBC.
We leave tomorrow for Peru and a jaunt up the Amazon, so I am taking my old,
yellow-stained OBC hat with me and hope to deposit it with some needy native
who, years from now , when an OBC third-generationer visits the jungle, he
will find OBC to have made its mark already!
Particular thanks to Dan Austin, who gently nudged me with a slew (100?)
English ciggy cards. Really helped me fill in some sets which Codere has
been feeding , lo these many years.
Dave Kolenda, feeling supercarged, sent along some yteam cards (77?) another
set that has been avoiding my collectors' hand!
Mr. Rittenberg sent along again a valuable hit on my '50 Topps bluebacks and
Hassan Explorers, a very interesting set!
From Tampa comes mr D'Angelo calling with a dandy '61 Post of Whitey Herzog.
Getting close on that set!Bob Johnson also connects with two of the Harlem
Globetrotters set I am working on.
.......and now for last week!
Trader Doug Smith comes up with a Blueback of Johnny Schmidt.
Andy Cook, with whom I had a nice phone chat sends something good alonmg. It
must have been good, 'cause I already whisked it from the envelope to my
collection and forgot to note what it is!
Lucious Linda really makes me laugh with an odd assortment to include Sir
Henry Morgan, the Pirate from the 50s Look and See set, a great Marilyn
Monroe card and
an original Larry Fritsch card of Ed Mathews. Thanks, Linda!
DDeJong contimues a the bombardment with a Katat and Palmer promised from our
last meeting, and finally Mike Rich puts me on the brink of completion of my
Globetrotters set with a consideration of Meadowlark Lemon cards. These have
been very hard to find!
Back the 6th of December. Keep the great attitude and fervor of OBC going in
my absence.

chance to hook up with Peter, although I did go to a bar with one of the
Air National Guard pilots who said the owner was a big baseball card fan.
After a couple of beers, "Moe" handed me a Ryan RC in exchange for future
considerations! That 1968 set just took a huge leap closer to completion!

When I got home, I found a pair of envelopes from Jeff Delott and Big Al:

Delott: Jeff sends along a pair of 1954s - Steve Bilko and Walt Dropo!
That's another set that's actually looking like it's getting close to
completion. The Dropo was actually a '54 mini, so I may start that set
next...thanks a bunch, Jeff!

Big Al: From the revered one, I was lucky enough to receive a pair of 1933
Goudeys - Riggs Stephenson and Curley Ogden! It's always a good day when
you get a Cubbie, especially one from 1933. Of course in 1933, the Cubs
were still in search of a World Series win that had been eluding them for
25 years...thanks once again, my friend!

Joe Isaac and I got together for a mall show, and raided a dealer's quarter
bargain box. It was like old days, picking out 60 and 61s for a quarter.
Didn't even need many of them, but they will fatten up the dupes box nicely.

Joe greeted me with a nice little pile of Tribesmen for a couple of the early
70s sets, those I certainly can use. It was good to catch up on things, and
we plan to hit Chuck's restocked bargain bin in January.

Ed Schott sends 2 65s and 77T which hits the list and is a M! Thanks
Bob Schaub sends 6 69s including Daddy Alomar and Willie Horton.
Thanks Bob.
Jim Beauchemin sends 3 65s and a 65T Embossed Frank Malzone. Thanks
Dave Kolenda has so much time on his hands he sends two envelopes.
First were 14 74 Topps Team checklists from the waiver wire. Second
was a DCP with a 55B of Ted Grey and a 52B of some guy related to
Pokie Reese. Big Thanks Dave
Last was the now imfamous Goto Puffy. Kent proved it is not that hard
to fit 100 cards in a puffy, and still make them all hit a list. 73
cards off the almost never hit 66T list then 20 to hit the 65T set.
Just for good measure he finds a woodie from my very short 62T list.
Kent, as everyone has said, You are the Man!

After a Saturday when all my football teams lost ... TCU and Michigan anyway
... the day was brightened by two arrivals:

Randy Griffin sends a 66 Topps Willie Mays. Mays was 35 years old at that
point and led the league in 65 with 52 home runs. One of the all time
greats. Thanks Randy.

Steve Rittenberg hit my now tiny T206 list with Harry Schlafly of Newark.
Harry played in the majors 4 seasons ...1902, 1906, 1907, and 1914 ...and
played about every position but pitcher. He also managed in 1914-1915.
Along with Harry came cards of two unknowns ...Roberto Clemente's 1971 Topps
card and Ty Cobb's 1953 Brown and Bigelow card. Thanks, Steve.

Now there's a pretty good outfield for one day ...Mays, Cobb, and Clemente.
A pretty good outfield for one century too. Much appreciated. - Doug

Three great packages in today:
Jim Beauchemin sends out 1979 #466 Mark Littell. This could be the LAST card
I need for that set but I no longer have faith in my ability to count. hahaha
Brock Hattox sends out a great package of Kelloggs cards: SIX from 1971, a1972,
1973 & 1974
Mike Rich sends me his share of the haul from Toronto. Man -- I gotta getup
there one of these years. Mike managed to find 23 cards for my OPC sets.
That sounds like a large number on its own but the impact is greater when
you realize that I need just 137 cards for a complete OPC run. Included
is a Gary Carter RC, Ken Griffey RC and the Mickey Mantle World Series Card
from 1965. The Mantle card is REALLY hard to find as it is the first OPC
Mantle card. Thanks to Mike, I need just two more for my 1965 set anda
few others are in the single digits. I should also mention that Mike threw
in some Parkies and OPC hockey as well, including the LAST CARD for a 1972-73
Team Canada (vs the Soviets) set. I am sure this set is complete!

Six great inbounds over the past few weeks:

Andy Cook drops off a 1970 Willie Stargell.

Al Crotte slam dunks the 1979-71 basketball set with four tall boys.

Saint Al of C attle chips in a 1963 Post of Al McBean.

Bob D'Angelo comes through with a 1963 Post of Yogi Berra.

Peter Mead knocks a 1961-62 Fleer off the list.

Grant Rainsley exports three 1978 OPC baseball and a 1961-62 Fleer of Tommy Bridges.

Cards out in Monday's mail to the above six and 14 more. I hit some wantlists of some
old time OBC'ers and a couple of newer guys. Lots of outbound 1961-1963 Post Cereal

Before the Toronto show I made a couple of good buys locally and added 1953 Bowman Color
and 1957 Topps Football to the wantlist with around half of each set. After the Toronto
show I've added 1964-65 Topps Hockey tall boys and 1969-70 OPC hockey. I'm also down to
three on the 1978 OPC baseball.

Thanks again to the six members who were able to hit my list.

A great group of packages arrived yesterday. Five total from the following
great traders...

Bob Reed checks in with a Carew AS and Brett Brothers card from 1977. Two
more cards down towards the final goal of total decade completion. Also
along for the ride was a great looking 53 Topps single.

Linda Fitak sends another great Fitak Pak after an OBC chat session. A dozen
67s for that set including a Frank Robinson and Killebrew CL, Sal Bando RC,
and a Tribe Thumpers featuring Colavito. Also included were a 54, (2) 56s,
and (2) 58s. The usual assortment of oddballs, including a great UV--1952
Topps card, came too.

Gersh sends a baker's dozen of 67s to go along with Linda's. Ken Boyer and
Mickey Lolich were the highlights. (3) 66s came too, featuring a nice
looking ChiSox Clubbers card.

Gary Mandell knocks off some great 70s cards from my lists. (3) psychos, (2)
73s to bring that list under 30, and 74s of Rennie Stennet, Jerry Koosman,
and Brooks Robinson.

Mike Wierzbicki hits an often overlooked list with (4) direct hits to the
1970 Fleer WS set. Sharp cards featuring (3) Yankee's series and a Dodger
series. The 1928 card with Babe and Gehrig was the highlight.

Thank you all for the wonderful cardboard you sent. Hopefully I can get some
cards out over the break.

A couple of days of packages to be thankful for:
Monday brought 4 packages:
1 from Fred Halbig, who may have found me through OPCC with a SCP of
a 1974 OPC BB #300 Pete Rose. Love getting superstars in trade.
Fred is selling some OPC sets at 1/2 book if anyone is interested.
Sassy pops her pretty little head up with a surprise photo of Lou
Brock in a classic sliding pose. Brock is still popular here in
Detroit for being thrown out in the crucial play in the 1968 World
Series that turned the momentum in the Tiger's favor. I have talked
to Bill Freehan about the play before. Brock photo, an OBC memory.
Dave Kolenda: a 1969 Nabisco Team Flake Allen, reducing the list to
2. I had mentioned I could use a few of teh 1974 Topps Team
checklists for some non-OBCers and Dave obliged with 3, (Yaz, I have
a checked Red Sox headed your way to complete your set.). Dave was
not finished as he hits my Bowman lists with 2 1949s and a 1950 in
OBC shape. Dave I wish you the best of health, but if it takes a
heart problem to get packages like this, I may have to consider that
Bob Reed sends some UV help (I expect to be adding some oddball UV
sets to the link in the next week) and even finished the 1991 Bazooka
BB set. Among the UV was BB, basketball and boxing. Talk about
oddball. Then Bob decides that he needs to help me because I am a
glutton for punishment. He sends 10 1971 Kelloggs towards
my "master" set with copyright variations as well as the other
variations. I figure the set at approximately 200 cards. I am well
over a 100 now.
Yesterday had only 1 package, but it was from Steve Rittenberg.
Steve has trouble valuing cards. He included a note saying he still
owed ME. Boy does he get these things backwards. First off he
returned a coupon for a free cup of coffee or hot chocolate at 7/11
(Steve, had stayed at my house 1 nite on the way to the National. I
did not have much of a chance to feed him in the morning before I had
to go to work, so I thought he might like a cup of somthing hot, as
it was only 88 degrees, on his way to Chicago and gave him the
coupon). Good thing hhe returned the coupon as it is freezing here
in Detroit and I need something warm on the way home. Steve also
sent 2 Topps Basketball stickers that I think were issued around
1972, but have very little info on. These are from the set I am
working on and I did not have either of these 2. He sends an
unmarked 1963 Topps FB checklist #170. A very tough card in real
nice shape as I try and put together a "parallel" set for this year.
Then he gets me started with 12 of the 22 1979 Burger King Yankees,
including Tommy John. Knowing I recently started the 1968 KDKA
Pirates, he sends 1 of those. Hearing I started Canadian GOudey's at
the recent Toronto show, he sends 2 from 1933 #4 and 35 Simmons.
These were the French versions of both. Switching sports, a nice
1954-55 Parkhurst #78 (the Lucky Premium version, as I am doing a
parallel set of these variations as well),a 1951 Laval Dairy (my
3rd), a 1933-34 Canadian Chewing Gum Hockey #50 Wasnie, I think is
the last card in the setand the coup de gras (hey these cards have
French on them)my oldest hockey card to date; a 1910-11 C55 #9
Campbell. WOW!!! and he thinks he owes me more (LOL LOL, get a clue

To: OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com
From: WMDpks@aol.com

I can't remember the actual answer to the trivia question of what major
league ballplayer was traded for "a player to be named later," and it turned
out that the "player to be named later" was the same guy! Anyway, Geno Wagner
and I just completed a unique OBC trade of a Topps 1953 Lou Sleater high
number in gorgeous condition (from Geno) for my Topps 1953 Lou Sleater high
number in somewhat less than gorgeous condition (dropped in the mailbox late
this afternoon). Then, just a day or two later, Geno tries to even up the
trade by sending me a Topps 1959 Duke Snider in equally gorgeous condition as
an upgrade for my corresponding card in crappy condition. Before Geno catches
on to the idea that I am actually getting the much better end of these deals,
I will offer him a few HOF'ers from his list.

Also coming in on the day after Thanxgiving from Ron Perry are a nice
six-pack of hits to my 1962 Post want list. These commons are very tough to

Subject: GIVING THANKS!!
From: Peter Iversen

Giving THANKS!
I thought this was an appropriate time to give out some THANKS to some
specific people who have made my past couple of weeks better in many ways
– and to also pass THANKS on to ALL of you out there in OBC land for
providing a place for me to go to where I can indulge my child like
notions and fulfill some of the fantasies of my youth! There are so MANY
of you out there whom I owe so much to – not just cardboard (although the
list of those ‘I owe’ gets bigger every year…) but also I owe much to
many of you for your actions and attitude towards others in the group
(and outside of it for that matter) – actions that affirm me as a human
being and make me feel better each day because I know people like you
exist in this world. No hyperbole – just fact in my mind. When I find a
place where people truly think about others and not just themselves – and
then act on their thoughts – that is rare in this cynical world in which
we live. So THANKS to all of you – for being an example, a caring person
and for being my fiend…
KENT GOTO – When I started the 1971 Topps ALL OBC set – I figured when I
got towards the end I would have to look for a couple of the high$ cards
myself – and thus make it an ‘almost all’ OBC set. Well – Kent in his
generosity has proved me wrong. I got an amazing threesome from Kent
including a card of 1969 WS MVP Al Weiss (SP high # 71T) and a Tony Perez
High# - and (I am still amazed) a the key card to the set a high # Nolan
Ryan card!! Wow Kent this is great! I read and enjoyed all of these
already – and am amazed at how ‘everyday’ Ryan’s stats looked in 1971… It
looks like ALL OBC is going to remain All OBC.>! Thanks Kent!
BOB REED – sends along a wonderful Variety Pack – once again astounding
me with the variety of stuff in his dupe box… I now have a second R-312
card/premium of Van Lingle Mungo to put in the MUNGO binder (beautiful
color..!) and a 62 Post of my childhood hero Maury Wills! And a 79
Kellogg’s of Dodger Doug Rau AND a 1971 Topps high # of Ernie Banks
(beautifully altered by a previous owner) to check another toughie off
that list! Bob also through in a Dodger Team oddball for my collection –
love them ALL Bob!!
RICHARD KIMBALL – Making my THANKS list for the 3rd consecutive time
(sending me about 8 envelopes so far..>!) ‘Fugitive’ sends along some ’66
and ’65 Dodger cards – some high #’s – and one ’66 that has been altered
and loved enough to be added to my new DODGER TIPTON COLLECTION (they
have to be pretty beaten to make it into this set…). Also a couple of
newer oddball Dodgers that I have coveted! Thanks again Richard for the
consistent assault to my Want Lists!!
STEVE RITTENBERG – Arranges for me to pick up a ’15 Cracker Jack Dodger
for my set for next to nothing – my first CJ Dodger to go with the CJ
Brooklyn Federal that Jeff S. sent me some time back – and he also sends
a ’72 TCMA "The Thirties" card of John ‘Buddy’ Hassett – a Dodger from
’36-’39. Some more great cardboard from the greatest cardboard collector
in Maryland!!!
I also got some great cards from OBC Prospects - Chuck S. and Matt H.
Chuck finished of my 1970 Dodger Team set and Matt started up some newer
Dodger sets for me!
Thanks again – to all of my recent benefactors (Kent, Bob, Richard,
Steve)– and to all of the rest of you who give and help and make OBC what
it is….
Happy THANKSGIVING!!
...and while we are celebrating - HAPPY CHANUKAH

First, I need to correct myself - ANDY COOK sent me a 50B last mth &

PETER MEAD makes his first trip to my mailbox count, w/ 2 '68 Topps
Game Cards of Kaline & McCormick!

TRADER DOUG SMITH joins in the fun w/ a pair of T206s of Brashear &

Not to be left out, STEVE RITTENBERG wallops my lone football list
from '78, sending Gaines, Cockroft and a couple of mediocre RBs named
Dorsett & Payton!!

KENT GOTO caps off a great run of generosity with a '69 Topps of the

Great cards from a great bunch of guys! I hope to become more active

Just returned from my folks 50th anniversery celebration in Palm Springs, CA. I am not certain if I could get used to living in the desert.

A number of OBC packages were stuffed in my mailbox. Thanks are extended to:

Bob D'Angelo for a couple 59 Topps.

Brock Hattox for a type card 33 goudey of Pete Jablonowski and a couple later editions--a 58 Milt Bolling and a 64 high Pedro Ramos. Adding to my Brock debt.

Linda Fitak for one of her typical packages--Target Dodgers, AS Yankees and Wiz Mets--with a few vintage cards as well. 56 Jr. GIlliam, 58 Billy Martin and a 72 nose bleed Ken Holtzman.

Joe Isaac sends a 69 Ken Holtzman lowering the magic number to three. I need a hero.

Dave Kolenda sends me some of his basement treasures. A 67 Philly football Lenny Lyles conceals the package's real gems--the last two cards needed for my 70 Topps FB set--Csonka and Jurgensen!

Steve Rittenberg sends a 76 Xmas ornament Card #1 (a set killer) and a 75 TCMA of my HOM member Jim Konstanty.

Bob Reed sends a couple 54 topps BB with Howie Pollet and Bob Scheffing along with a 55 TV of A's catcher Joe Astroth.

From Michigan, Ron Perry sends a couple early 60 Fleers--a 60 Luke Appling and a 61 Heinie Manush.

And last but not least, Erik Greenwood sends a four-pack. Two 50 Bowmans (should I list another set, hm...), a 55 Topps Billy Herman coach card in great shape, and a 58 Al Kaline with a typical gnawed corner.

Great stuff, great cards--according to my count nine packages. wow!

in spite of my lollygagging. Thanks a lot Brock, I really like these

And leave it to STEVE RITTENBERG to break the 2 card pattern by sending
one and one fourth cards. Actually he sent one card with four guys on it
and a fourth of a card with one guy on it. The one card, a 63T Rookie
stars, brings my 1958 to present Topps Tigers list down to just 16
cards, albeit mostly hi's. The quarter of a card is a very trimmed 55

in a Phils cap...thanks a ton, Bob!

I have to get some laundry done, some bills paid, and some kids to bed -
talk to you all in a couple of weeks!

Take Care, Geno
