Direct hits scored by: Brian Lindholme sent one of those many needed Psycho 72 hi #s. Geno sent me another APBA card and used one '65 and (12) '63 Topps cards to pack it with. There was a Pete Runnels card in there. Pete won a batting title with the Red Sox who then promptly let him depart for Houston. A tried and true pattern the Sox continue to this day. Kent Goto sent, for my viewing pleasure, (4) '55 Bowmans including Hoyt Wilhlem who states on the back of the card that his greatest thrill in baseball was hitting a homer his first time up in his first major league victory. The HOF releiver had a remarkable career, also pitching a no hitter in a rare start. Robert Pigeon sent a pair of '59 Topps cards, one of which was White/Red Sox HOFer Luis Aparicio. John Storman sent more TVs for my viewing pleasure. (5) more '55 Bowmans along with a spare '81 Topps Yaz he had. Bob Reed sent a pair of '59 Topps with Andy Pafko, a '63 Stu Miller and a '64 Topps card. Thanks a bunch fellas! It rained too much, but we saw a lot of really cool stuff. Let me know if you are thinking about traveling there or just interested, and I'd be happy to ramble on a bit ... A nice surprise was waiting for me, curtesy of Kent Goto ! The envelope came in before, but I figured I'd leave it for when I got back. If I'd know, I might not have been so patient ! Kent sent over a dozen cards, including a trio of the dreaded 67 high numbers ! On top of that were a bunch of 64 Topps cards, including a bunch of those high numbers and a rookie card for "Sterling Slaughter" ! Thanks Kent ! ================= To: "OBC-Thanks" Subject: These came west Date: Mon, 3 Sep 2001 13:03:07 -0700 From: "Brian Lindholme" The Oregon Coast baseball card population increased this long weekend with contributions from OBCers Art Wainwright, Mike Dia-labordaymon-ti and another visit from Mac Wubben. Art's envelope was indeed a "work of art". Some fine upper level seats fromthe 65 Pennants and a Giant of Bill Freehan. Reading the back of Freehan'scard tells me that these cards must have been issued in late 1964, maybe even 1965. How else would they know that Bill most of the 1964 season among the top ten AL hitters? I guess that I should investigate this topic now that I'm actively seeking these cool, big cards... Thanks for the nice assortment, Art !! Mike's contribution wiped out approximately 3/8 of my 1960 Topps set !! His razor-sharp cardboard offering included Don Larsen, Duke Maas and Joe Pignatano, leaving just a few more to nail down this set !! I still need to re-assure myself that I have indeed amassed all of the superstar cards ( I don't hold those in the binder because for the most part they are high-gradeand in a special Lindholme Grading Service holder...what, you never heard of us ?? ) Great job Mike !! I figured that Mac has a secret yearning to be bi-coastal. He's sent me so many of his cards, knowing that I will let him visit them anytime. He is filling up my cardroom so fast, I'm going to have to give him his own wing. Mac's latest collection relocation project included 4 more fabulous woodies,3 of which depict Red Sox, an always welcome 53 T, and get this....a pair of T205's !! We've now captured 119 cards from The Greatest Set Of All-Time !! Another awesome job, Mac ! As you can see, these fine OBCers labored to send cards my way and they are greatly appreciated, as are ALL of you in OBC. My summer has been filled and fun and busy and has kept me away from the computer and OBC land... I even had gone as far as to start a list of cards I was going to send people in June - and then the summer happened..! Since things change so fast here I know the list is way off - so I have started again from square one. I apologize to all of you who have been so wonderful in sending me cards - who I had hoped to hit back. I have started acting on making this happen sometime in September - or considering my recent record perhaps I should say "this fall"... I am still working two jobs but the Summer Theater part of my responsibility has ended. In the past I have taken time to tell everyone what my summer was filled with - plays and performing and etc - but at this point I am leaving that and saving my energy for the Thanks and hitting some want lists..! Here is what I received this Summer from my OBC friends... ROBERT PIGEON - (who has send about 10 unanswered cards) sent me a fabulous card for Eli's '77 Topps set - a Pete Rose..! That and a couple of cards from a friend at my friends church and Eli has finished the set..! Thanks a lot Robert! ERIK GREENWOOD - Sent along what looks like a WHOLE SET of Dodger Police cards from a date I am not supposed to mention. Let's just say it was between the Dodgers last two World Series Victories... Thanks much Erik for the wonderful Dodger cards. JOHN MCLAUGHLIN - my friend from Toledo sends me 17 cards for the 1971 Topps quest! More to add to the collection and get that want list smaller and smaller... I really appreciated the cards John! KENT GOTO - Included me in his bombardment on the group! I got 3 lovely 1955 TV's to add to that collection - I just took Eli to the ball game last night and he got to look at the Bowmans (we are collecting this set together in honor of the Dodgers first WS win) and is amazed how many we have - thanks to you all in OBC! Thanks Kent for the very nice 50's SPIKE GLIDDEN - sent a great assortment along - 4x'73 OPC Dodgers - 2x'71 Black Beauty high numbers! - a 51 Bowman horizontal reprint of Joe Page and a real 1951 Bowman Horizontal of Jim Hearn - a great package to be sure and a pleasure to read and look at and put in their respective homes... Thanks! GENO WAGNER - found a APBA of Jose Cruz for me - and three more 71's to knock a few more numbers off that set - I am thinking of wallpapering a room in my house with APBA cards.... Thank You! JOHN HARRELL - finds a BEAUTIFUL 91' Topps Reds team card for me - really nice card Bama - thanks! BOB D'ANGELO - also comes up with a VERY PRETTY '71 team card of the Padres - to give everyone an idea of what a out of the pack '71 looked like..! Merci! MARK TALBOT - sends me a TON! of stuff - and wonderful variety too. First a Postcard from the 1940's of a favorite actor of mine - William Holden - and a Spanish Cigarette Card (my first in Espanol) of Caesar Romero and Rosilind Russell! - also a BATCH of OPC Dodger cards! 2x71 - 4x72 - 5x78 - 2x79 - 4x80 and 11 from the same year as the Dodger Police cards I got from Erik - add to that 50!! 1971 Topps cards and a big handful of Fleer stickers. I had a great time going through and looking at and reading this box - in fact it took several late nights to do it...! Thank You Mark - what a great box! JEFF SINCLAIR - found 31!! of the '71's for my set - including Lou Brock! Another wonderful time of reading and sorting late at night after work... I can not believe how MANY of the 71 cards I have received from you guys - I had a few to start with but ALL the rest are from you all. Thanks very much Jeff for adding a hefty amount to the collection! STEVE RITTENBERG - sent me a great item - a copy of THE JACKIE ROBINSON STORY - which I have never read - this one was published in 1950 - looks like a Book Club edition and it is really nice. I have started reading it and am loving the old style writing and how much it is showing the atmosphere of the times through the way it tells the story. Thanks DOUG SMITH - Actually came to LA and I missed him! I was so busy I forgot the date he was going to be here and when I asked Josh - it had been the weekend before I had asked..! Doug had brought some cards for me - which he got to me in spite of my "no show" status. I got another great BIG handful of 1971 Topps cards and a T206 Dodger card!! of Happy Smith... Thanks so much Doug and I hope I can meet you someday soon...! Well - that was my summer in baseball cards. I thank you all especially for giving me something to smile about after the looooong days and nights at work. I spent many a late night at the kitchen table reading through my cards and finding a real change of pace to the hectic lifestyle I am Hope to hit you all and a bunch of others soon - and make you smile too!! Anyway, trying to confirm my memory I looked him up and discovered that he was just sort of a shooting star in Boston, but he was good while he lasted that single season. In 1970 he started 10 games and won 7 of them. Way to go Vincente Romo! Thanks Jerry for the great card, I appreciate it. - Rick ================= To: Subject: Three big hits! Date: Mon, 10 Sep 2001 05:15:23 -0700 From: "Geno Wagner" Fellas -- After sorting through my mail from the last two weeks, I found three gems to report on: McGowan: Sean leads off the parade with a woodie high number of Harry Bright! Bright was Koufax's 15th strikeout victim in the '63 World Series record-setting performance. Thanks for the wood, Sean! Harrell: Bama hits my 1933 Goudey list yet again, this time with a Earl Adams card! Earl was glued into a book it appears, so I can't report anything remarkable about his career, but he did play for the Cubs - so he's got that going for him. Thanks once more, Bama! Schaub: Bob pounds my 1955 Bowman list with six TVs, including one of those elusive umps! The ump is Art Gore, who I believe went on to be a Vice-President. Date: Mon, 10 Sep 2001 17:35:25 -0400 From: "Rick Redpath" It was a great OBC Monday for me as Yaz and Bob Schaub both sent beautiful vintage Red Sox cards! From Mr. Conway came the nicest 1953 Topps this Tipton Mint curator has ever seen. It is not eligible to be included with the riff-raff in the regular binder so I'll have to find a special place for this fine William Kennedy. Thanks Greg! Then Mr. Schaub snuck in a couple of great looking 1955 Bowmans (Can you believe that? 1955 Bowmans from Bob Schaub? Anybody else have this happen to them?...) including another president, Willard Nixon, and the catcher Sammy White. These two are a treat to look at and miraculously are both hits to my stealth sample Red Sox typeset wantlist which is so secret it isn't even listed anywhere. Nice going Bob, the cards are excellent! And by the way, have the detectives out there finally figured out when, where, how, and why Bob came into posession of 3129 Bowman Color TV cards, anyway? I already have a complete set of the 1979s if anyone needs some, but all 6 of the 1980 ones were hits to the list, amazingly enough. Thanks Ron for all the hits. Ron stayed until well after midnight and at least I had a great time showing off some my collection to the 2nd OBCer to come John Storman makes his first contribution to my collection witha 1967 Topps Poster of Rick's fav, Johnny Callison and 3 hits to the 1951 Topps Blue Back set, getting me ever closer to the 1/2 way mark on that set. The 1951 Topps sets have been stubborn in not getting closer to finishing them. Thanks for the hits to a set that does not get enough action. Payback will be forthcoming. ALthough I am thankful for the above, it seems almost inappropriate to be thankful of pieces of cardboard, when innocent people are being killed. I actually wrestled with sending this post today. I decided that in times of turmoil it is accpetable to find solace in things you enjoy and savor life to its fullest. Cards do that for me, as I think they do for a number of us in the group. If nothing else, continuing to trade shows that others out there are thinking of us and carre what happens to us. OBC's legacy of helping those in need (whether it be in bidding up cards to help out financially, sending cards to a kid who lost his brother, to get well cards for those sick or injured) is well documented. Hope all of you make it through this terrible time with your spirit in tact. Sorry about the ramble as part of a thanks. ARt Wainwright sent me some nice '55 bowmans as well...I sort of like way they look in a binder. Bill Malson also sent along some '55 Bowmans. Oh yeah...My friend Michael is now completely hooked on collecting the '71 Topps set thanks to many obc members. In fact he went to a show with me and spent nearly $40 on cards and loved it...he searched my favorite dealer, Paul, and found 22 high numbers, Reggie, Mays, and Seaver for $25 total...he then searched antother dealer and found semi-highs and high numbers for .50 to a dollar!! True obc form without any help from me!! I meanwhile found another Holy Grail card from my T-205 wantlist...I own 18 T-205 Morans. I finally found the one with the odd type line after the stats for $25...I feel that it is extremely rare, maybe not as rare as the Hoblitzell or Wallace but damn close. But in this moment of airless shock when hot tears sting disbelieving eyes, the only thing I can find to say, the only words that to fit, must be addressed to the unknown author of this suffering. Whatever it was, please know that you failed. Did you want us to respect your cause? You just damned your cause. Did you want to make us fear? You just steeled our resolve. Did you want to tear us apart? You just brought us together. Let me tell you about my people. We are a vast and quarrelsome family, a family rent by racial, social, political and class division, but a nonetheless. We're frivolous, yes, capable of expending tremendous energy on pop cultural minutiae -- a singer's revealing dress, a ball misfortune, a cartoon mouse. We're wealthy, too, spoiled by the ready availability of trinkets and material goods, and maybe because of that, walk through life with a certain sense of blithe entitlement. We are fundamentally decent, though -- peace-loving and compassionate. We to know the right thing and to do it. And we are, the overwhelming of us, people of faith, believers in a just and loving God. Some people -- you, perhaps -- think that any or all of this makes us You're mistaken. We are not weak. In the days to come, there will be recrimination and accusation, fingers pointing to determine whose failure allowed this to happen and what can done to prevent it from happening again. There will be heightened misguided talk of revoking basic freedoms. We'll go forward from this sobered, chastened, sad. But determined, too. Unimaginably determined. The first is an addition to my T-218 set featuring track star Melvin Sheppard. Thanks to Andy and some eBay purchases I have actually begun to acquire a reasonable amount of these cards. For the most part they are affordable which I like. Andy also sends me my first W514 card, a Heinie Groh for my type set collection. I am beginning to enjoy this aspect of the hobby, now if I could find another place besides eBay to pick these items up at a reasonable cost. Any ideas? Erik sends 5 Prizefighters from the set including Sailor Burke, Al Delmont, Frankie Neil, Unk Russell and Ad Wolgast. I like it a lot but living in the Mid-West I have never seen these cards I will be counting on some of you left coast people to help me out with this set. The great thing about the Topps 1980 Wise was that it was the last card I needed to complete a fifty-year run of Topps sets (except for the 1951 Highs, 1951 Teams, 1951 All Stars, and 1952 High Numbers). Boy am I glad that this has been more than a 5 year mission to search out new cards and new civilized members, to boldly mail what no one has mailed me before (o/~ ahhhh AHHH ahhhh- you know the music). We will hunt his cards down through the nebula colonies, past the andromeda strain, shake down Dr Smith on the Jupiter 2... Scotty, we need more dilitheum crystals....."I'm a card collector, not a doctor dammit!" Well anyway Ken, thanks for the cards :)... ================= Date: Sun, 30 Sep 2001 08:34:19 EDT Subject: TWTY's To: OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com From: kwg0@aol.com This weeks thank you's out to the following; MAJOR MATT SHIRLEY - 56t's (Ray Boone #6, and Robin Roberts #180 whose birthday is listed as today) BOB DONALDSON - 58T's (Tom Acker #149, Danny O'Connell #166, and Del Crandall KEN MORGANTI - THE WRATH CONTINUES - 55T'S (Chuck Stobbs #41, Ken Boyer #125, Dave Hoskins #133, and Gene Freese #205 Thanks again guys. Bob Schaub---(4) more TVs from Bob as he cleans out his appliance store. Bob Donaldson contributes two nice 1965 Topps cards, including the 1961 Rookie of the Year, Dick Howser. Plus a 1968 Steve Barber card that is getting dangerously close to (dare I say it ?) NM condition. Thanks Bob. The wrath of Ken sega continues as the very busy Mr. Morganti hits the '65 embossed set with two, including a Bobby Richardson, and three '68's: Luis Aparcio, Manny Mota and having a very bad hair day, Pete Richert. All very much appreciated, thanks Ken. Well, I thought I'd have a day off today but the phone just rang, so no such luck, it's off to work again. God Bless America! ================= To: "OBC Thanks" Subject: 55 set down to 8! Date: Sun, 30 Sep 2001 18:46:09 -0400 From: "Robert Neill" A slightly delayed thankyou out to Ken M for knocking off 11.1% of my 1955 wantlist. He did it with a great high number Bobby Adams. Only 8 more to go on that set. If only it weren't for people with names like Williams and Clemente. thanks Ken ================= To: Subject: Thanks! Date: Sun, 30 Sep 2001 19:14:18 -0400 From: "Bob Donaldson" Returning from a week in NYC found some great cardboard waiting for me. Bob Farell sends a 55 Topps Preston Ward, 64 Jose Pagan, and a 65 NL Batting Leaders with Aaron, Carty and champ Clemente. Mark Talbot sends a six pack of 68 Topps Fottbal including Billy Kilmer. The Morganti onslaught continues with a trio of 56 Topps including a Clem Lebine who seems to have lost a battle with a hole puncher. Finally, Andy Cook sens two hits to my 41 Playball set; Max West and Jack Knott. Keeping them company was a Frank Frisch Strip Card. Thanks Guys!
