Kent Goto included me in his massive assualt with hits to my 55 TV-style Bowman set. Three great-looking cards in total. Thank you Kent! Your mission to search and destroy OBC want lists was accomplished. Job well Brian Lindholme sends a beautiful Topps 55 Gus Triandos RC. Thank you Brian! For some reason, I was having a tough time finding this card on ebay. Perhaps somebody out there is hoarding these??? An SCP for the 56 set was sent by Mike Wierzbicki. Thank you Mike! That 56 set is something special and any hit there is greatly appreciated. Steve Rittenberg sends not one but two envelopes filled with hits from the 50's to early 60's. Wow! Thank you Steve! Your amazing ability to empty out your dup box time and time again is admirable. As that old beer commerical used to go......Here's to you! This one is really really late, but it would be a shame to omit one of the nicest guys within our ranks. Rick Svetecz sends a couple of those pesky 67 semi-high numbers. Thank you Rick! Geno Wagner somehow found a card from my 65 set. Not an easy task since I only have four to go. Thanks Geno! Howdy Gents, To celebrate the conclusion of my 3rd year with OBC. Here is an OBC give-away auction. Condition conscience collectors need not apply for a bidder number. Mainly Gd to Vg- with creases, rounded corners, etc, etc.... Five asterisks, means this card is a true "Tipton" special and will certainly stand-out in any collection... Rules (please read carefully): A) All bidders must get a certified bidder number (which will be your name, or if you wish to remain anonymous a simple nickname will do). But please, only use the nickname option if you had a prior run-in with me. B) Place your bid along with a valid lot number and a small description of the item you are bidding on. Bidding starts at $0 and will end at $0, only exception is if Topps 1962 Baseball Bucks are used. C) If I owe you some cards please make a note of it with your bid. That will change your status from that of a "simple bidder" to the more prestigious "VIP bidder". D) Please note, that replies to any emails will be non-existent, but feel free to ask any questions. E) Refer to my PAYPAL feedback for any doubts you might have about my F) Updates might be made daily, but I reserve the right to have no updates. But, if no updates are made, please see my policy on questions or inquires (Rule "D"). G). Monopoly money can be freely substituted for cash. H) All sales are final! Sorry, but no return on these. NO EXCEPTIONS! I) Auction starts today and will have no end date (depending on response and my overall disposition, I might be adding more lots as we go). Could take a day or a couple of years (you never know with me). Cards were available for viewing last Saturday via a web-cam at my house by appointment only. My apologies if you didn't receive a notice. Lots will be reserve on a first come first serve basis, as well as a second come first serve basis and if necessary a third come first serve basis (if I receive 2 or more bids on the same lot, please refer to the OBC manual page #094, subtext 5, paragraph 3, for further instructions). Although, I might use some sort of LOTTO system to determine the winner and if that fails, then we will use the old but reliable astrology charts. Please be aware that I reserve the right to change the rules as we go. Please have your credit cards handy... Now let the bidding begin and don't be shy, I accept lay-away.... Good luck! It was an extremely sharp 1951 Topps Red Back #45. This reduces that set to 11 more. Thank You Brian, I think it is the nicest condition one in my set. Mark Zentkovich makes a nice delivery to a couple of my weakest sets; 1949 Bowman Simmons and 1950 Bowman #152 & 195. Getting me close to 30% of the 1950 set. Geno "APBA" Wagner shocks me with a prewar Tiger; T205 O'Leary. Andy Cook has been encouoraging me to start this set and I now have 17 of them, getting me close to my 10% minimum to consider it a set I am working on. Yuk Chow sends me a package claiming it is payback for a long ago package, which I do not even recall anymore. 2 hits to the 1953 Topps set. Down to 68 to go; 38 lows and 30 high numbers. Yuk wsas not through as he sent 3 1952 Topps BB Black back low numbers. Not only do I love black backs (I think they are harder to find than red backs, even though Beckett's claims equal value) but this reduced the overall set to under 200 to go (199). Just last week I passed the halfway point. I need 95 high numbers and 104 non-high numbers. Next goal is to reduce the non-high numbers below 100. Although the cards in the other 3 series are close in value, I have over 3/4 of the numbers below 250, and need almost 3/4 of the 251-310. Go figure. Thank You all for the tremendous hits. See my ramble to come about the changes in my collection. Mike Rich ================= Date: Wed, 1 Aug 2001 20:48:11 EDT Subject: Double Time! In a moment of weakness (I have many of those concerning baseballcards...) I answered Rob's plea to accept a starter set from 1979. I only agreed because I didn't have many of these cards, and it was the year that I graduated from high school. Rob sent so many cards, it MUST be a whole set in there !! I did not noticeuntil I got through to the other side of the box that Rob had sent a pile of the stars from that year as well...including an OZZIE SMITH RC, Fisk, Rice, Sutton, McCovey,Bench, Rose, Carlton, Carew, John Lowenstein, Bernie Carbo, Fred Kendall, Wayne Gross...you get the picture !!! Wow, I am very pleased to say thanks Rob for "digging" these up for me !! Neal Thomas continues the cards my way, with some wooden beauties from the year I was born...1962 !! Some significance as to why I collect these too....Grant told me I had to !!! Chuck Paris sent three more to the same cause, the wooden soldiers !! This set is quickly becoming filled by you generous OBC guys out there !! Thanks to Chuck and Neal for the woodies ! Erik Greenwood went beyond the call of duty, sending a 64Giant Tony Oliva that I can place in my shaving kit for emergencies. If I am ever caught short without a razor, this card will be an ample substitute ! Oh, and just to be unusual, Erik adds some real old cards. How did Erik know that I like real old cards ?? I guess the secret is out, because Erik mailed a stack of T218 Athletes featuring the era's best hurdlers, high-jumpers and sprinters!!!! And the Lynn Miller generosity......you know the picture, you're livin' it. Well, I been whapped pretty good upside my head and just don't know how to describe receiving: THIRTEEN ( 13 ) T 205s in one day, from one Fly-Boy, Geno-Generosito-Wagner. Yes, you read right, 13 DIFFERENT (as they say on Ebay) T-205s. Geno gently reminds me that: "This will help you on your way to the coolest set evermade!" OK, Geno, having been a member of the USAF for 3.5 years, I learned the hard way, to NEVER argue with those who have higher rank than me! (Almost got an Article 15 once, the pre-court martial form of disciplinary action, but that's another story....). Then I also get pkg. #2 from Geno, an assortment of 54s, one 57 and a psycho 72. Man, whaddaya gonna do with thisguy, this group?! You send 'em cards, you get buried!! Thanks is a puny word, but it's all I got at this point -- Thanks Geno! PS Will be e-mail-less in Canada, no less, from Sunday, Aug. 5th through Monday Aug. 13th. My son is attending a professionally-run, kick-ass baseballcamp in Oliver, BC. While he is running wind-sprints and learning way more than I could ever teach him, I shall be exploring the Kettle River Valley, Kelowna, and Kamloops areas. (Search on Yahoo Yellow Pages revealed NO card shops within 150 miles -- I don't have enough time to drive to Saskatchewn..) Maybe a little fishing, a little reading, lots of napping, lots ofeating....I figure there ought to be at least 2-3 "ramblings' to come out of my vacation. Oh-oh, gotta run, Mariners are about to start a series withthe hated-Cleveland bunch. Jamie Moyer vs. Bartolo Colon (he throws 90% fastballs when behind in the count -- Mariners batters ought to like THAT statistic...) Full reports will be filed when I return.... No cards were hurt in the mauling. Arriving nicely are a couple of woodies, 5 from 1968 and 7 from 1969. Thanks Glenn. Jeff Sinclair sends more black beauties with a threat to finish the set. Among the high #s I found none other than Hammerin' Hank Aaron himself. Thanks again Jeff. Mac Wubben hits hard with a SCP from 1959 and a 1966 Stargell. I came into it after school let out with grand intentions of getting my collection more organized and really getting some cardboard flying here. It just hasn't worked out that way - none the less you guys keep sending stuff and I am behind in my acknowledgments (as usual). I would like to express my gratitude to: Spike Glidden who answers my plea for some `73 OPC cards. I was expecting "some" upgrades for my collection. Spike had other ideas though, he sent along 150+ cards from the set and not only sent some upgrades but knocked off another 70 cards as well. I am indebted to you big time Spike - these cards were a real surprise!!! Jim Hatch spied a few hits on my OPC list and couldn't resist sending them to Southeastern Michigan. Among these beauties were a `79 Dave Winfield, a single `80 OPC common and 22 hits to the `85 list. These Canadian issues have been getting quite a bit of attention lately and those list are dwindling. Thanks for these additions Jim. Bob Schaub swats the hit not once but twice and he does it with two of my favorite sets. Bob sends me a bunch of hits to my Fleer sets from the 60's. From the `60 Baseball Greats set he sends a dozen including Alexander, Anson, Gehringer and Grove to name a few. In his second package Bob attacks the `61 - `62 Fleer set with 5 HI numbers of Pipgras, Pennock, O'Farrell, Kuhel and Joost. I just love these sets and with Bob's contributions have now gotten very close to completing them. Neal Thomas picked up on a previous Thank you notice where I indicated that I was going to "break down" and fill in the missing sets from the UV era of the past decade. So Neal does his best to motivate me in that direction with a heaping helpful of unmentionable cards (about 300 - 400) that I will mention only because Neal has retribution coming - Thanks again Neal!!! I think anyone with all their marbles, or at least anyone with some short-term memory, would realize when they had sent 3 or more envelopes within a few weeks to the same address... Anyway, BIG thanks to Geno Wagner for a mixed bag of great old cards. 2 from the wonderful 1955 Topps set, including a Cubbie Pitcher (Jim Davis) and an Orioles Coach (Brecheen) who still looks like a pitcher. Also in the mix were a '54 Topps Sid Hudson, a 1959 pete runnels and a 1963 Roman Mejias. If it wasn't for that little circle inset thing on the '63 Roman Mejias you would think it was a football card... And, get this: Geno sent me an APBA Baseball card!!! The first one I've ever received and I am honored. Thanks again Geno! Doug Smith also may have forgotten to remember that he sent me something recently, but went ahead and passed along a real nice 1950 Bowman anyway. I love the color in both of those sets. Thanks Andy. I'd also like to announce that I completed a set that I've been working on for 49 years. The 52 Topps was the set I played with as a kid. Stretched out on the floor with 2 teams of cards and a set of dice, I invented more baseball games than any kid alive. These are the first cards that were in my bicycle spokes, that I traded and flipped against the walls. The backs are full of my handwriting... identifying outfields by their real position ...center field, left field, or right field. I'm pleased that the Mantle I finally bought on e-bay to finish the set fits right in ...scuffed, creased, and with a little of the back missing, its obvious some other kid loved that card too. In the same mold, Mac Wubben sends 3 more 57s, featuring Cal McLish and Frank Bolling. Thanks Dave. Wayne Delia also kicks in with 30 or so hits to the same set. Jim Lonborg is my favorite shown leading the league in Ks. I wish I was old enough to have seen 67 Impossible Dream. Was it as heartbreaking as 75 & 86? Thanks Wayne. Brock Hattox hit the 1968 parade too. A nose bleeder of Mayo Smith (real name???) and another for company. Not one to waste the postage Brock takes a stab at the coming along nicely TV set with 5 sharpies and then throws in two 1956s highlighted by a Yank Larsen. Thanks Brock. I'll find something for you sooner or later. Bob Schaub helps out on what I've been calling "our" set of TVs. I've bought some but I think the majority are from him still. 'Bama also tossed in a nice and needed '69 while Geno tossed in, well, we all know what Geno *always* tosses in! Geno also added a note that still has me chuckling. The '71 he sent was #108, John Cumberland, upon which he reflected: "Nice hat -- IF you're an UMPIRE!" Indeed, the plain airbrushed black hat looks like an ump's. What is especially confusing to me, however, is *why* the hat was blacked out. In most cases, I've presumed that it was because Topps didn't have a picture of the player donning the lid of his new team. However, on the *back* of the card, sure enough, there's Cumberland sporting the cap of his new team, the Giants. Go figure! Now for that SCP that Mr. Reed forwarded to me. It was an absolutely stunning 1963 Post of my boyhood hero, Harmon Killebrew! WOW!!!!! Someone was tremendously skilled with the ol' scissors and made sure that Harmon remained creaseless for the past 38 years! Bob does bring up a slight problem, however, as he writes that now I have to decide whether the card goes in my Killer collection or with my Twins?! I've always puzzled about which to fill in first, and usually I decide to put him in the company of his teammates, as I think that's where the player would most like to reside. I'm not firm on this at all, however, and would welcome feedback from other guys who collect players and the teams they played on! Do you have a separate binder for each? Do you double up, or when you have a player for the team, does that take care of him on your player list too? (Sorry if the wording here is confusing... I write poorly in the a.m.). Anyway, I'd love to hear how the rest of you deal with this (with the exception of Guru, as I I've witnessed his innovative solution... trimming the picture from the Post card, placing the picture with one collection (or in a scrapbook) and the L-shaped remainder of the card with the stats and text in another collection. :-) Anyway, I love the cards and the companionship. Thanks for the diversion, guys. Take care and have a terrific day... ================= Date: Tue, 21 Aug 2001 16:06:22 -0400 Subject: Thanks to Bob Reed To: OBC-Thanks From: Brock Hattox Thanks to Bob Reed for 6 Kellogg's including Frank Howard and Will ================= Date: Tue, 21 Aug 2001 20:24:08 -0000 To: OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com Subject: Thanks to Geno! Frank wrote that all is well in the Burgh. Playing golf in charity events and getting love from those who remember him. My wife couldn't believe a player actually collected cardboard. Her next question was "Does he know Nomar?". I had to show her some of The Originals cards and explain he retired in 1966. She just doesn't understand card collecting. I usually group all my thank yous in one posting but this package is worthy of its own post. I have been on hold for the `68 Topps set for sometime now and did not have much realistic thought that the Koosman RC I needed would make it into my mailbox anytime soon. I have been beaten out on the card numerous times on eBay and the dealers in the area all want your pink slip and your first born for the card. So I figured that the spot would be vacant for some time to come. Then comes along Bob Schaub!!! I have been bombarding him recently with OPC baseball cards and have in good nature been jokingly sending him notes indicating that I would be continuing my assault on his list. My last package of almost 200 late `70's and early 80's OPC cards also included a note daring Bob to send me more cards and see what happens. Well Bob sent a SCP that has me dancing, smiling and jumping around just like I was a kid again. The elusive Koosman RC is now in my collection and with the exception of (3) updates the `68 Topps set now joins my `67 and `69 complete sets. Many of the cards in these sets I have owned since I was a kid - I opened the packs, ate the gum, flipped, traded and have always loved these cards. Now I have them all!!! WOW!!!!!!!! Bob - you just wait - you haven't heard the last of me - I'll be seeing you at the mailbox buddy!!! THANKS for making me feel so REGARDS --------------------------------- MARK "Live long and prosper" - Spock * Mark S. From: Mark S Talbot Hello Everybody, The table was full of mail that had accumulated after our vacation and it was with great excitement that I started to sort it all out. Four piles on the table, junk mail, bills and other "important" stuff, magazine and catalogs, and the "real important" stuff OBC packages. I filed the first three piles accordingly and swooped up the pile from OBC and retreated to the office. Here's what you guys sent me while I was gone: "Tripleplay" Rick Ellison sends me a SCP from the waiver wire and this one is special. Eddie Mathews never looked as good as he does on this TV set from the `55 Bowman set. Typical OBC condition, this well loved card is being proudly displayed with all the other TV sets. I will never get tired of looking at this kind of TV!!! From my birth state of Connecticut Bob Reed sends me a waiver wire request in an envelope franked with a Comiskey Park Stamp, a `63 topps cards of Nellie Fox. Bob also sent along for the ride (4) other cardboard specimens, first Bob completes my `68 Topps game card set with an upgrade of Gary Peters, then a couple of `63 Post Cereal cards with Jim Davenport and Bernie Allen, finally a `63 Jello card of my HOM nominee "Stormin" Norm Cash. A very nice group of memory joggers, I tip my cap Bob!!! Along with the Koosman RC that Bob Schaub sent me (worthy of a separate post), Bob sent two other packages. First, a small offering of `75 OPC cards with Madlock, Kingman, Baylor, Gossage, Yanks team and (3) others. His second offering brings more OPC cardboard with: (17) `72 OPC cards including Pirates and Braves team cards, A.L. Pitching leaders, McGraw, Clemente WS card, Tommy John and plenty more, Bob also sends (35) `73 OPC cards headlined by Rangers and Reds team cards, Torre, my HOM nominee "Stormin" Norm Cash, McDowell and plenty more. As threatened before I be taking this out on you at the mailbox Bob - Thanks a million!!! John Storman sends me a `55 Topps update of Howie Pollet and (5) `52 Bowman cards with Bob Hooper, Cliff Chambers, Vern Bickford, Jim Hearn and Hal Jeffcoat. Thanks John and I will get your package out over the weekend. A smartly canceled Tiger stadium stamp graces the envelope sent by Geno Wagner. Inside the envelope is a really cool APBA card of Ron Jackson. Oh ya, Geno also sends a "sweet" card from the `79 Topps Football set with a "sweet" player by the name of Walter Payton featured as the rushing leader for "da Bears". Thanks for it all - How sweet it is!!!! Mac Wubben's envelope to me sports the Polo Grounds and inside a few wavier wire claims. First off Mac sends me my fourth T-206 card, a three cornered Otto Knabe of Philadelphia, along for the ride came a `57 Topps cards of Dusty Baker, a `61 Topps checklist, a `62 Topps HI number of Dean Stone a `62 Post Cereal card of Jim Lemmon and a `67 Topps card of Paul Schaal. Thanks Mac for a very nice "variety" pack - ya got to love 'em!!! I want to thank everyone for all the great cardboard you send - it's a great way to cap off a relaxing vacation. I hope to get some packages off during the holiday weekend so be on the lookout!!! BE WELL!!! REGARDS --------------------------------- MARK "Live long and prosper" - Spock * Mark S. He includes a 1951 B of that great Braves pitcher, Johnny Sain, and a 53B of Fred Hutchinson.
