From: Mark S Talbot Hello Everyone, It's been great listening to the recounts of the National - what a great time!!! I have already talked to Mike Rich and told him that I will be doing everything in my power to attend the Chicago show next year. Well I have some thanks to extend - so here goes. The man called "BAMA" hits me with some wavier wire claims that are just spectacular. As luck would have it on his recent waiver posting I needed about (15) cards (this is unusual since usually there are only a few on any given posting that I need), so I prioritized the selections and Mr. Harrell responded with my top (3) picks. He sent me a 1974 Topps which was my highest priority a Dave Freisleben RC #599 (San Diego with large letters) - I have been looking for this card for about (3) years and wasn't even sure it existed. In fact, I didn't really know what I was looking for until this card arrived and now there is one final card in the set I need the Appocca RC variation (hint, hint). This is a great find in my book and I am very pleased. ;-) Next I must say the 1954 Bowman card of Jim Dyck from the first year of the Baltimore Orioles is a beauty it was my 2nd Priority on the list. Finally, Bama brightened the day with a checklist variation that I didn't know I needed - a `70 Topps 4th Checklist with a red bat (I guess that there are a couple more checklist variations that I will have to add to the old want list). I love these cards Bama - Thanks a lot!!! I gobbled up an offering on the recent "help me clean out the closet" campaign initiated by ED PIKE. I decided to begin working on some of the `90's sets from Topps, Dunross and Fleer that I stopped collecting back about 1993. So Ed dropped me a starter set from one of those dreaded UV sets that will probably take all of about a month to complete when I finally get around to posting it on my overall want list (don't worry - I won't be posting it on an OBC group server - Oh the I received a SCP from RON KINGSBURY via RICK REDPATH, in an effort to do more damage to my `60 Topps set Rick sends a Sherm Lollar AS card from the Hi series of that set!!! I think it black crayon across the face of the card (any ideas on how to remove that) that gives it special OBC appeal. Thanks for the great cardboard Rick. (Does Ron still collect cards and have a want list?) Last, but not least, I completed a trade with STEVE SOKLOW, who found my want list on the OBC web site and I felt I had to share the results of the swap. In the jamb packed puffy there were a `51 Bowman (Hermanski), a `52 Topps (C. King), a `56 Topps (Fitzgerald), a `58 Topps (Labine), 5 from the `59 Topps set (Monroe, Baker, Speake, Spahn and Musial), a `62 Topps HI number (Coates), 3 from the `64 Topps set (Martinez, Daniels and Allen) and finally a couple HI numbers from the psycho set (Hopkins and Wise). For me this was a major deal so if Steve should contact you he gets the "thumbs up" from this trader - go ahead and trade with him!!! I also received a few eBay lots of pre-war non sport items that I will be bugging Andy about (I don't have a clue about this stuff) as well as a few T-218 boxers that I needed. Thanks again for the great cardboard fellas - I wish all in the community to BE WELL!!! REGARDS --------------------------------- MARK "Live long and prosper" - Spock * Mark S. Andy Cook, Mr. Pre-War, sent me a W590 - Bob Meusel that looks like something clipped out of a newspaper, if the newspaper was made out of cardboard! Ya gotta love old cardboard, right? Andy, you always send me nice and very interesting "stuff"! Thank you, sir! And Rick Redpath, via also Da King, Ron Kingsbury, sends me some tasty '58sand a '55 Topps card. Ron has always managed to stay in touch with OBCers, and Rick's generosity is well-known, so I'll leave it at that. Thanks Rick!! Joe, you have given the Mariners one more reason to payback those pinstripers!! Fanfest is in full swing right now. I'm not going to brave the crowds and spend the money (I went to Mariner Fanfest in February, that was good!) but I will be watching events on the tube, especially Tuesday night's game. As a lifetime Red Sox fan, I am sometimes asked about why I feel the way I do about the Yankees. It is not because of the fact that they are good. I would be stupid not to realize that they are extremely talented and are probably the best team in baseball. But, as a talk show host pointed out this morning, rooting for the Yankees is like rooting for U.S. Steel - the best team money can buy and a corporatesymbol, right down to their pin stripes. More than that, however, is the arrogance that always seems to come through, whether it's with Dan Topping and Del Webb when they were exploiting the Kansas City A's to build their invincible teams, with Steinbrenner and his money, with WFAN's Mike Francesa always looking down his nose at other teams, or now with this all-star fiasco. You can't convince me that the imbalance created by George and his money is good for baseball. Up until now, I have to admit that I grudgingly admired Torre for the job he has done. Now I have to wonder. the olde Friar -----Original Message----- From: tply@aol.com To: diamanti@whidbey.net ; OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com Date: Saturday, July 07, 2001 12:56 PM Subject: Re: [OBC-Thanks] Cards Inta Coupeville In a message dated 7/7/2001 9:39:22 AM Pacific Daylight Time, diamanti@whidbey.net writes: And I'd like to thank Joe Torre, for filling the All-Star ranks with his beloved Yankees, lest their egos and equilibrium gets out-of-whack during the second half of the season. This excellent addition to the pile o' stuff came (as a complete and excellent surprise) from Terry Dietrick, who has just zoomed to the top of my Whatta Guy list. I never bought any yearbooks before, and now I realize what I've been missing. This thing is packed with great photos from nearly 20 years ago, though it's a little hard to believe it's been that long. There's player profile after player profile, with lots of those "favorite vacation spot" or "most prized possession" kind of questions. One guy after the other, naturally, says that his most prized possession is his family, or his wife, or his kids. Then you get to Dave Stapleton, who clearly wasn't clued in to the correct answer here, because he lists his most prized possession as "hunting shotgun"... Also in the book is a nice seating chart of Fenway, with the exorbitant ticket prices of $6.50 for lower box seats... But maybe the best part is a very nice article about baseball cards! This was written by a Boston Herald writer, and it's a nice history of 100 years of cards along with great pictures of vintage Red Sox cardboard -- what I only dream my typeset will look like some day. Terry, remember him?, also added a few real cards to the yearbook, helping me out with the great 1959 set, and also with some Sox cards from 1960. My story on getting the 550 Bowman set started - In about 1961, I went down to the neighborhood "variety" store and saw some odd looking football cards that I'd never seen before, and they were dirt cheap (this in the days when a pack was a nickel). But when I got them home, I was stunned to see that these guys were ancient - 6 years old! So, I stuck them in a box and didn't think about them for 40 years or so. And when I get them out, there's Gifford, Groza, Doak Walker - a pretty good start on the set. From: Mark S Talbot Hello my friends, Another week goes by and more cardboard is brought to the door by Wyatt the friendly Postal carrier!!!! It just never ends, the hit just keep coming and this week I would like to thank: Doug DeJong, who blasts away at the `61-`62 Fleer baseball Greats List with three off the waiver wire. Among the Baseball greats were Philadelphia A's pitcher Chief Bender, Yankee slugger Tony Lazzeri and one of my favorites Johnny Mize. This set is so cool and has to be one of my all time favorites. Doug I will treasure these additions!!! Erik Greenwood sends another package my way, this time answering my shameless plea for assistance with my `78 OPC set. Erik brings a beam to my face with two gorgeous looking specimens of Robin Yount and Dave Winfield. WOW!!!! Oh so close now, just (7) cards to go - I thank you for getting me that much closer Erik. Brock Hattox is at it again. I am constantly in debt to Brock for all the wonderful cardboard he sends and I will be digging out for some time now. Brock recently started collecting the `53 Bowman set and of course he is already updating it and today I became the recipient of this dupes. But as you all know by now Brock doesn't just send ordinary dupes he sends tons of them. I got 25 cards from the `53 set to add to my list, with names like Lollar, Runnels, Hutchinson, Lockman, Sauer, Dark, Durocher, Rosen and none other than Stan "the man" Musial. Brock will undoubtedly finish his `53 set before I finish mine but he has established mine as well on its way. Words are not enough to describe my pleasure with these cardboard gems so I will just have to retaliate. Many Kudo's Brock!!! Kerry McGinley sends out a couple `57 Topps cards, a Ray Katt and a Wes Covington card have now been securely placed into my collection. Kerry and I have been trading for a while now and it's always a pleasure to receive cardboard from the other side of the state of Michigan. Thanks Kerry!!! I stopped by Mike Rich's house yesterday to drop off some OPC hits and a box of upper grade `68's and `69's that we went in on at a local card show a few month ago to upgrade our respective sets. I spent a little time catching up on all the fun at the National, as Mike spent Saturday and Sunday in Cleveland. Before I could leave I had to watch him open his package from Brock (so I knew there would be one waiting for me at home as well) and Rob Perry of Freeland, MI. Before I could leave Mike slipped me a stack of stuff he had been putting aside for me (we had been planning to get together for a couple of week now). I acquired (3) `70 OPC cards highlighted by Rod Carew, (2) `71 OPC cards with Gaylord Perry, (3) `74 OPC's, (14) `75 OPC's featuring Mel Stottlemyre, (19) `77 OPC's with Fisk, Schmidt, Palmer, Yaz, Brock, Fingers, Carlton, Carew, Perry, Yount and Morgan, (9) `78 OPC headlined by Gary Carter, (4) `79 OPC's and a `83 OPc card of Rod Carew. It's always a pleasure to visit with Mike and this big haul yesterday made the visit even that more pleasurable. Many thanks to you Mike!!! Jeff Sinclair brings me one step closer to completing the `71 Topps set with a SCP of Rickey Clark, a HI number from the set that needs but (5) more hits. I do believe that I will get this one done before the end of the year. I tip my cap to you Jeff, this one was really needed!!! This week there were six big packages to brag about and once again the incoming this week are better than the week before. Usually it's because I'm negligent about getting the thank you notes out on time. However, recently it's been because there just haven't been any incomings. My mailman has been getting a lot of dirty looks from me instead of the usual enthusiastic greeting I gave him before. Today made up for the last few weeks, as he proudly reached into his bag and produced a small BOX with my name on it. He was promptly tackled. (It's been ages since anyone had enough hits to my list to mail me a box of something, so I was nearly drooling with excitement... OK, I probably got a little drool on him in the frenzy, but I didn't notice or care.) I hustled the box inside and savored the moment, full of anticipation of what could await me inside the box. This lasted almost three seconds (a new record!), whereupon I grabbed a case cutter from work and decimated the cardboard container... it's a good thing nobody from work saw how fast I can REALLY work when I want to ;-) Anyway, inside was the complete sports section from the July 11th Midland Daily News. The front page featured a Cal Ripken photo and an article detailing his heroics in the All Star game. Oh, there were also about 67 hits to my hockey list There are plenty of All Stars, playoff highlights and team cards in here. My lists took a real beating. THANKS RON!! My wife and I were standing by the big board of everybody who hashit 300 homers and sure enough, there was "Johnny Mise." I told her that was wrong, but she said it must be right - this is Cooperstown after all. I found the historian dude and told him and he couldn't believe it had beenwrong all that time. Thanks again Bob I'm really starting to like this set. ================= Subject: Cards in 7/16 Date: Mon, 16 Jul 2001 22:11:13 -0400 To: "OBC Thanks" From: Matthew Glidden Thanks today to: Brock Hattox sends a nice four-spot of 1953 Topps. I like these older cards if for no other reason than they reveal the evolution of baseball culture. #56 asks "what is a 'jockey' in baseball?" (a player who rides the opposition). It occurs to me that you don't hear about that much anymore, players going out and making pests of themselves on the base paths or from the dugout. It's pretty much restricted to stare downs at the plate these days. Mac Wubben sends a pair of 54Ts my way, "Peanuts" Lowrey and Bud Podbielan. Stubby Clapp and Pokey Reese being the notable exceptions, we just don't have many outstanding names in baseball these days ... we need more Pee Wees and Spooks (okay, Spook is unlikely in this days and age ... how about Pumpsie?) Jim Hatch sends a big SCP, a 67 Drysdale. At that time, Drysdale had turned in 300+ innings in four of the previous five seasons, winning at least 18 games (and losing at least 12) four times. Imagine what sports writers would say about that kind of workload these days ... Ron Perry sends a half-dozen hits to the 65T list, most of them of the high # variety. Speaking of All-Star days gone by, #562 Billy Moran features the highlight, "Billy played in 2 All-Star games in 1962." They have a hard enough getting the players to care about playing in one game this year, how about running them through two-per-year again? Major Matt Shirley could "only" find two hits from list, a 62 batting leaders (with, uh, Clemente) and a 66 Kaline. With people like Matt and Jim sending these kind of hits around, it looks like I can stop bidding on eBay and just send out my lists each month ... :) Thanks for the cards, guys! The clean, crisp, tidy, neat, unblemished envelope, I should say, with a great old Polo Grounds stamp on it. Those stamps are real nice, but they're a little small, and the canceller machine just about ruins them completely, what a shame. The larger, brighter, ballplayer stamps held up a little better to the postal equipment, so it's really too bad these old ballparks weren't made jumbo-sized. Anyway, stay tuned next week for the next edition of stamp Back to that crisp clean envelope from Spike. It looked like potential trouble until I opened it up and found some messy, beat-up old junk cardboard inside. What a relief! There was a soft and comfy 1955 Topps (I love that set!), a paste-on-the-back reclamation project 1956 Topps (I love that set!), a glossy looking but neatly striped from the miscut 1959 Topps Gino Cimoli (I love that set!) and an old target practice, bulls-eye poked 1953 Topps Red Sox card (I love those old Sox cards!). All of this makes for some very high-end quality additions to the private collection here at the Tipton Mint, and all of it is greatly appreciated. I once told somebody my '59 list was starting to get a little short, and a little tough, but that I still had a bunch of Geno Cimolis on it, so it wasn't >that< hard... Well, with Spike's help I'm now down to exactly 100 cards to go more or less, so it's getting a little shorter and a little tougher, but I still need a few Zeke Bellas so it isn't >that< hard... I can't account for such an error, I just hope that Mrs. Goto checks the family silver and flatware with some regularity. The size of this mini batch is staggering, numbering (I estimate) about 125! Rick Svetecz takes player collecting to heart, except that he SENT ME ALL HIS GARVEYS. I mean it, there was at least fifty different Garvey cards and stickers in this batch, with a couple that were totally new to my knowledge (and one that will be a catalog challenge, as it bears no number and no company ... hmm). AMAZING packages guys, thanks! I can't reciprocate at this level right now, but I'll give it a shot! Robert Pigeon - the rook continues making the OBC rounds, checking in with psyco 72s of Mike Paul and Steve Hargan and a '69 of Mel Stottlemyre. Rob Fitts - 152 cards to start me on the way to a set that just barely doesn't get to make it on the vintage list, '81 Topps. I've always liked the hat set. While counting the total cards, I whizzed past a couple that looked different - upon investigation I uncovered an '80 Topps Hubie Brooks #494(anybody need him?) and a '76 Topps Ted Simmons, who is also available (#290). Also along for the ride were 17 '74s, which I haven't started yet, but might as well, since it's the only hole in my 70s sets. One of the 17 was a Hank Aaron special. Thanks for the great starts Rob! George Moore - two hits to the '57 set, a '66 and a mysterious almost-postcard sized black&white card of Pee Wee Reese. Have no idea what this card is. It has a blank back. I've enclosed a scan - can anyone help me out with this? It's certainly one of the coolest cards I've ever seen - thanks George!! Spike nails me with 54s, 55 Bowmans, and a 57 T Dave Sisler who looks a HELL of a lot, in a scary way, JUST LIKE SPIKE! I'm not kidding -- check yoursets! Granted, Spike wasn't born in 1931, but there's somethin' weird going on here. Spike did move out East and attends Red Sox games (Sisler did pitch for the BoSox), and it was the top card on the pile....never mind, notenough coffee yet......Spike, thanks! Jeff checks in with some pack-fresh 72T Psychoes -- love those. Jeff, thanks! And Kent Goto sends me some amazingly sharp looking 55 Bowmans including Irv Noren (I like OLD Yankees, it's the new ones -- 2001 players -- I can't stand. They're just too full of themselves...). Thanks Kent! Speaking of weird, (I was wasn't I -- I didn't just think it, did I?). My wife and son Dimitri were off camping last night, so Trent and I had steak, spanish rice, baguette and a Twins/Mariner game on TV to watch. I decided to put on the radio because Tom Paciorek has been "guest" announcing a few Mariner games (ones in the MIdwest), he sounds like Dennis Miller, is way funnier than Dennis, and is probably twice as smart. He, being of Polish persuasion, was able to translate the meaning of all the Twins' players' nameswho are Polish. "Fat Blackbird" and "Soft Feathery Bed" were two versionsthat caught my ear. But more amazingly, the radio airplay was 2-3 seconds faster (wait a minute, I can figure this out) I mean the cable delivery was2-3 seconds SLOWER than the radio announcers -- (why is this Brian? Brian is now the CABLE GUY but bears no resemblance to Jim Carey). I actually achieved an altered state as I could hear the umpire scream STRIKE and hear the ball pop into the mitt, before the pitch arrived!! Wow, talk about a cheap evening's entertainment! Aaron Sele pitched a beautiful game and the M's won 4-0. The Humpdome (named after Hubert H. Humphrey -- the god of Minnesota politics) was packed and I even got to see Kirby Puckett for a moment up in the press booth. (Wow -- He looks like a very happy Buddha who hasn't stopped eating!). I was a hardcore Twins fan until I moved to Mariner-land in 1988. I like the Twins -- coach especially -- but that Metrodome has got to go........and so do I. This has been a trial version of Thanks/Ramblings Hybrid, version 5.2 (my age), brought to you by Mike Dee-awwwh-mon-tee. ================= To: "OBC Thanks (E-mail)" Subject: The Designated Shopper comes through! An even dozen 1968s, again mostly hi#s (Bouton, Tiant, J Niekro), but also a Tigers Team Card, Santo, and an NLHRLL (Aaron) 2 1972s 3 1976s 5 1974s incl Ryan 2 1968 Game cards - Yaz and a very Tipton Mantle A 1984 Daryl Strawberry, leaving only Dave Winfield to complete that set. A 1971 Kelloggs Felipe Alou A 1960s Bazooka Norm Cash 2 Tigers Decal/Transfers A 1953 Don Lund (Yet another Tigers) and finally, a beautiful 2-sided color photocopy of a 1954 Harvey Kuenn - surely the most valuable item of the lot! A puffy from Mike always makes me realize how much I am in debt to him - but I can't wait to open it. This one included two 1955 TVs, including Whitey Ford, and seven (yes, seven) 1933 Goudeys with Earle Combs highlighting the stack!! The only way I can catch up to Mike is to drive up to Coupville and hand himmy car keys while I walk home. Absolutely amazing, my friend! Saturday brought a pair of hits, including a very cool woodie from Mike Wierzbicki! The card features the first game of the 1961 World Series with Elston Howard crossing the plate for the Yankees. It's amazing how good my old WS knowledge of match-ups is compared to recent times. Those WS cards always made you remember the fall classic. I would be hard pressed to come up with the match-ups in the 90s, but I could probably get the 60s. Thanks, Also today came a big envelope from Kent - one of the first OBCers I ever met. He is one of the few guys I probably owe more than Mike D, but I can'thand over the keys to my house since the Air Force owns it. Kent made me think of my dad today with 3 TVs - Erskine, Furillo, and Gilliam! My dad was a Brooklyn Dodger fan, so whenever the Dodgers came to Wrigley we would go catch a double header and my brothers and I would root against my dad. Well Kent is doing a fine job at wrestling the award away from Bob, he sends me a `61 Fleer of Paul Derringer, a `64 Topps cards of Bob Miller and (3) `63 Topps with Lee Thmas, Mickey Vernon and Norm Siebern. The generous Mr. Goto sent along a pile of Red Sox cards from 1964 and 1966, including a nice 1964 Bill Monbouquette and a stunning 1966 Team card (9th Place - American League!!!). That 9th place finish in 1965 may not seem too impressive but the Sox were just 8 games behind the Senators that year, so it could easily have been 8th place. The Sox also finished in 9th place in 1966, so this card was pretty accurate in predicting the future. And that year Boston was only a half game behind the Senators, how's that for improvement. (And who was in 10th aka last place in 1966? Anybody?) But I digress... Kent also sent along a fine 1955 Topps card of perky looking Bob Purkey of the Pirates. That's a great set and that's another card to get me closer to finishing that one. Incidentally, I think the Bob Donaldson counter broke the glass when it got up to around 65 or so, and I think Kent has a little ways to go before he hits that mark, but keep watching. My favorite in this group is Gus Bell (#235). Check out that smile. All ballplayers should be this happy, getting pay to play. Thanks Steve. (I hope I got the credits right on this next one) Received a double play sort of puffy from Ken Goto. Inside was a stack of ten 55T, 56T and 65T cards. Ken also forwarded cards that Spike had for me but sent to him by mistake: It's a baker's dozen sampler with one card from just about each year from 52T to 67T. Included were a 57 Boyer, 60 Klu, and several hi #'s. Thank you Ken and Spike. And wrapping up the week was an envelope received from UK sent via Her Royal Post. A 52T Frank House, a trio of 64T and a 66T. Thanks and cheers to you Glenn. Been very busy lately with work and summer visitors from out-of- town. Red Scheondienst is included, as well as two World Series cards! Also of note is the rookie card of Jesse James Hudson (#348). What are the odds that his nickname was "the outlaw?" You won't find me betting against it! Thanks for the great birth year hits Jeff! "It pays to advertise." I've heard the expression so often...and Matt Shirley proves it to be true! Matt sends three 1969 Topps hits as proof! My wife comented on the card of Bill Hands (#115) saying that "he looks ten years old." I don't think he looks a day over twelve! Thank you for the cool cards, Matt...and crash course in marketing! Spike Gildden also took part in the blitz of my wantlists by sending a 1967 Phil Neikro, a 1969 and 1970 Topps high number, and four 1972 Topps hits, including a Baylor rookie, a Bert "be home" Blyleven and a Fregosi traded high number!! To: OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com From: MatShirley@aol.com Hello again OBC! It was a great Monday mail-wise, and everyone gets personal thank you's. Spike Glidden pipes in with his own great load of cardboard into the Shirley mailbox. Spike sends along nine hits to the 59 set with names like Mazeroski, Adcock, and Granny Hamner, follows those with three 62 hits including a Norm Cash All Star, throws in a 64 Walt Bond, three 65 high numbers, and a trio of great looking 67's. Many, many thanks Spike for a sweet puffy full of great Semper Fi, ================= To: Subject: thanks a box! Date: Mon, 23 Jul 2001 23:36:29 -0400 From: "Sean McGowan" Ed Pike sends along a beat-up old box from 1969! The first year I bought cards. This is just too cool! Thanks a bunch Ed! Just so you guys know, on the box are pictures of McClain, Gibson,Yaz and Mays. The McClain and Yaz pictures are the same ones from the cards, but the Mays and Gibson pictures are different. The Gibson happens to be the same picture that is on the 1970 leader card for the '69 K ldrs. #71 I think. But I can't find the mays picture anywhere. Anyway, thanks Ed! ================= Date: Mon, 23 Jul 2001 23:40:43 EDT Subject: thanks from the family toad and go-to guy To: From: bdangelo@aol.com Hi guys, Major thanks go out tonight from soggy Riverview to Brian Lindholme, who sends three gems from 1955 (Bobby Adams, Joe Amalfitano and Joe Cunningham) and OBC's go-to guy, Kent Goto, who sends three marvelous hits to my 1955 Bowman set -- Andy Pafko, Jim Robertson and Warren Hacker. Wow, thanks to both of you!! ================= To: , , Subject: Two more hits in the desert! Date: Mon, 23 Jul 2001 21:04:08 -0700 From: "Geno Wagner" Fellas -- I went through a big drought the last few weeks, but my wantlist is gettingsmoked now! Today I received two more hits: Sinclair: Jeff hits my 1971 list with a perfect looking Tony Perez! This card is a beauty - much better than its buddies next to him in the binder. I used to dread the Reds coming to Wrigley - there is no way Steve Swishercould compare to Bench, Manny Trillo to Morgan, Pete LaCock to Perez (you get the picture). That has to be one of the greatest line-ups of all time, although I would be hard pressed to name more than five or six pitchers from those teams. Thanks a bunch, Jeff! Glidden: Spike amazes me with an onslaught of 1951 Bowman cards that I just added to my list - a total of six of these great cards! Included is FredSanford, who if I remember right went on to open a junk shop with his son Lamont. Also in the bunch is Puddinhead Jones, one of the great names of all time. It says Puddinhead hit over .700 in the Navy - doesn't say much for those Navy arms does it. Thanks a ton, Spike! From: Mark S Talbot Hello everyone, I had to get to the Thanks server quickly because I'm getting red eyed looking at the TV. I'm talking about `55 Philco TV's in the shape of baseball cards from Bowman. Were not talking reruns here we got "prime time" with shows like Rizzuto, Wynn, Newcombe, Umpire Goetz, a total of 10 TV's from Bob Schaub. He sends these in answer to the box of OPC stuff I sent to him. WOW!!!! Bob what a pay back - I'm lovin TV again!!! Spike Glidden answers a waiver wire request and send 9 Football cards form `74 and `75 including Jim Otto, Floyd Little and O.J. Spike also send for the ride some unexpected pleasures with 4 Hostess cards headlined by a `79 Rod Carew. Got to love 'em Spike!!! The recent trading party at Steve Rittenburg's was a real success from all reports and I feel like I was there with the package Steve sent me today. Inside was 29 OPC Baseball cards from `65 to `78, allow me to do some name dropping from the lot. There was Mazerowski, Richardson, Boyer, Piersall, Niekro, Perez, Palmer, Carew, Rose, Martin, Jackson, Williams, John, Yount and Winfield. I am in awe of these Steve - Thank You!!! I'm going to try and send out thanks to the following. My last two posts didn't make it out I think. My mail says it was sent but I never received them as incoming mail. If this gets out somebody please LMK. I'll send thanks out personally until I know it's working again. Pat Sweeney sends the first hits of the day. 9 from the 1976 set highlighted by one of my favs Fred Lynn also is include the older and much nicer Bonds with a record breaker card. Thanks Pat. Steve Carter chips in with a nice mid # assortment from 1959. Thanks Steve. Greg (YAZ) Conway sends a 1969 delivery with checklists and Don Drysdale along with a young Joe Torre and a few others. Thanks YAZ. The final envelope comes from inactive member Gary Pearce. Who sends a couple of black beauties with a high # and Tug McGraw and a couple of 1979s of Molitor and Brett. Hopefully he'll be activated soon and get a wantlist up so I can help him out. Thanks to all and thanks to OBC. The latest arrival included a 1963 Billy Gardner, who "had his peak season in 1962", which means that he then got traded to the Boston Red Sox where, in 1963, he managed to hit .190 before calling it a career. The other card was a Topps Traded Fergie Jenkins, one of the few who didn't finish his career in Boston and spent only 2 years here in the mid seventies. There must be some kind of Cub connection with this guy, am I right, Geno? Thanks again! - Rick ================= To: OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com Subject: Cards in plus some Bad News / Good News Date: Wed, 25 Jul 2001 14:52:49 -0400 From: "Robert Reed" Recent incomings include.... Kent Goto. Yes he included me on his recent bombardment despite all the damage he did to my list at the National. Three TV Bowmans including an umpire card and HOFer AL KALINE! Thanks Kent! Ron Perry sends along a trio of 1961 Posties for help with that set. Malzone, Bauer, and Spencer. The only problem is these don't have writing on them like many of my others do. Thanks Ron! Spike Glidden upgraded his 1969 Reggie Jackson decal and returned the one I gave him a while back. That's the one that is stuck on a regular 1969 Danny Cater card. It will be added to the Reggie Jackson collection I'm half-heartedly working on. Reggie was one of my favorites growing up. Thanks Spike! Old Buddy Lynn Miller sends along an SCP Woodie semi high number of Dick Schofield. Thanks Lynn and nice to hear from you again! Thanks guys! Now for the bad news. As of last Friday I am out of a job. Hopefully something will come up soon because since my wife is a teacher she's not working either during the summer. Anyway, the Good News is now I have some free time to send out some packages. I'm way behind in outgoings so I'll try to hit as many lists as I can. What would thanks be without mentioning our own Georgia Peach, Brock. Brock has sent me 2 MORE packages in the last 2 weeks. The first arrived when Mark Talbot was visiting/trading and he was envious to see a 1948 Bowman high number, 1950 Bowman low number Joe Page plus another 1950 Bowman, a 1953 Bomwan B & W Mize, reducing my wantlist to 8 in the set, plus a 1953 Topps high number. Truly vintage material, in the key series and stars to boot. I would say the package could not be beat, but Brock checkked in a couple of days ago with the last 1958 Topps BB white letter (common variation) that I need for the set. Did I mention that was Hank Aaron? Brock also saw my note that my 1952 Bowman set, although now complete is in truly OBC shape and could use some serious upgrading. Well Brock sent along a Marty Marion card that probably did not look this good in 1952. How did you doctor this card or is it a reprint? Ron Perry sent along some 1964 Topps coins, reducing this set significantly. Ron and I met at the National and as it turms out only live about an hour or so from each other. Ron, I have some 1953 Bowmans for you, but you only get them when we go to a Tiger's game together. LMK when you want to go. Mark Talbot, as mentioned was over and dropped off a bunch of OPC BB. Nearly completing my 1979 OPC BB, except for all of the star For those of you also in OCT, Ralph Genova's name is no stranger. I was able to make a major dent on Ralph's list and he reciprocated with, 2 1952 Topps BB, , a National Chicle, 2 1934 Goudeys, including Klein, 2 Batter-Ups and a 1933 Goudey. The 1952 Topps put me over the 1/2 way mark. I now have 204 and need 203 (not counting variations). I would like to get under the 200 mark soon, anyone have a #311 to trade? Brian Lindholme claims he has had trouble finding stuff on my wantlist, and sends me 2 packs of 1972 Sunoco FB stamps and a card that made it intot he box so quick, I forgot wh it was, but it did hit my wantlist. If anyone needs any Sunoco stamps let me know, as I have hundreds in a box ready to be pasted into albums. Thanks to all of the above. Did he forget he lives in the Philippines now and he doesn't really have the time to send out old cards anymore? Lynn passes along 3 more 1955s, including a corker of a Corky Valentine, a Ray Boone and the one and only Reno Bertoia (a few years before he became famous in The Book, you know, on page 81). Neal Thomas - a '71 high number, seven semi-high '72s and 22 '73s (including Gibson, Aaron, Carew and Strikeout Leaders with Carlton and Ryan). Thanks Lynn Miller - did you know that Jackie Robinson played his first major league game on the day that Lynn was born (April 15, 1974). I didn't either, but Lynn commemorates that day with a little SCP - a reprint of his '52 Topps card. Thanks Lynn!! ================= To: "OBC-Thanks" Subject: Mid-week thanks.
