To: OBC Thanks From: Terry Dietrick It was a great day at the mailbox. Compliments of OBC! For the first time in a long, long time, 4 nice puffy's arrived at my house the same time I did, after hitting a couple of garage sales looking for the shoebox full of baseball cards. No luck again today. STEVE RITTENBERG- Steve began the onslaught with 5-65's, including soon to be Bucco Dave Guisti and 4 of the 6 checklists. And along for the ride, a great Pirates team card from 1959! Thanks Steve! HOWARD MORGAN-The grizzled one hits my 62 Post list with Clay Dalrymple(one of great baseball names) and Mr. "Have you ever seen" Harmon Killebrew! This one has been skillfully altered to show that Harmon does not play for the Minnesota Twins. Just erase it and it's gone! Thanks Grizz! MIKE WIERZBICKI-From the WWW(Weirzbicki Waiver Wire) Mike answers my request for some 65's, as he sends 6 of them, led by another future Buc, Matty Alou. Also in the mix is Hawk Taylor. Hawk is from Metropolis, Ill. It was destined that he should play for the New York Metropolitans(Mets). Also in there was a 61 card of the brothers Sherry, and his other brother Larry. Thanks for the cards Mike! MIKE DIAMANTI-Mike continues the 65 theme with another future Pirate, Vic Davalillo and Denny McClain's brother, Fred Gladding.(Looks like it in his Tiger uniform) Also 5-66's, all hits to the old wantlist! He's a big dealer who works just outside of Cleveland. They are excited about hosting our OBC trading party at the national. i think they even called themselves "our corporate sponsor". I've been doing lots of ebaying recently, probably biting off more than I can chew. If anyone is interested in splitting lots with me, let me know. Seems Bob was even more annoyed than I was that I was one card short of finishing the woodies set. So he went to work...found the card on Ebay....a Ruth Green Tint.....could almost be called a variation. And he bought it. I stared at the puffy for a good 5 minutes before I dared to open it. The card slipped beautifully into the last open slot in the binder....card #693 of this 598 card set. DONE! I know OBC is heaving a huge sigh of relief, thinking "That's it! Maybe he'll shut up about the woodies now," and give us all a break. What's that? Did somebody just mention that there's Venezuelan woodies? With tints? Bob also threw in a '55 Bowman of "Red", and a '73 Ryan, and some others, just to give the Babe some company on the journey to a new country. I got to tell ya, i've been busy beyond belief and haven't been able to send materials out as I would like but it has not stopped you guys from clobbering my list time in and time out. So I extend my gratitude to: When I answered the call for `68 Topps put out by Neal Thomas he had to get a few licks in on my want list. So (7) much needed pieces of cardboard have made there way to Michigan via Palmyra, Pa. Pirate Max Surkont, vintage `54 Bowman starts off the hit parade followed by a `62 Tigers Team Card, a `63 Rookie Stars card w/Herbel, Miller, Taylor and Wolf, a `64 Topps of Lee Maye, a `65 Cubs Rookie Stars w/ Norman and Jeackal and (2) `72 psycho HI numbers Dave Marshall and a really cool Rod Carew In Action card. I know I got your package out a little later Neal, but I sure do like your end of the deal. Thanks so much Neal!!!! George Vrechek sends me some "Tall Boys" in the form of `70-`71 Basketball cards, (3) of them to be exact. I just started collecting these cards and trying to learn a little "history" of the game as written on the backs of the trading cards because i really didn't follow Basketball as a kid. Its kind of cool putting the playing histories together by looking at the stats and bio's. George sends a couple `75 Topps Bengals Football cards to round out the package and for these I thank you George!!! Hot off the waiver wire Mike Wierzbicki knocks off 1 more with a SCP of `65 Topps Bob Friend. As of 1965 with 3259 innings pitched Bob was the team leader in that category - according to the card. Wonder if he still holds such a I received another package from a fella who got my name from the OBC site. I thought I would mention Larry Beil just in case he should contact any of you. Larry completed a trade with me and sent my way (7) Post Cereal cards from `62 and `63 and a `64 Topps card as well as a `64 Topps coin. Nice fella, and we had a few nice email conversations. Well that closes the book on this weeks acknowledgment and to these gentlemen I tip my cap!!! School is out for summer (YEE-HA!!!) in just a few short weeks and I am already feeling the stress relief. I opened the mailbox and among the junk was 3 OBC envelopes and also a letter from the IRS. Wanting to get right to the pain I opened the IRS first. I was positive it had to be bad. Thankfully I was wrong. I'm getting a bigger refund than expected. I sold some Canadian stock and paid tax in both countries. I guess I had to only pay Uncle Sam. I knew things could only get better now. The first puffy is from Spike with a half dozen 1956s. Led off by Duke Snider. Huge hit to the list. Thanks Spike. I then opened a niner that I'm pretty sure is from Mac Wubben filled with 1968s & 1969s. Highlighted by Matty Alou in 68 and a dozen of his closest friends and 5 nice 69s. Thanks Mac. The final envelope was from Mike Wierzbicki with an assortment pack. 2 great 1959s a high # 1965 and 4 beautiful 1966s.Thanks Mike. A final thanks to Peter Iversen (my sponsor). We had a great conversation last night about cards, baseball, work, kids and life in general. I'm sure I did most of the talking because I can be a motor mouth most of the time. I sent out some envelopes today but it's tough looking through the wantlists. Steve Rittenberg suggested putting out availables on the waiver wire which will be easier. So keep you eyes out because I have much more available. Thanks again to all OBC'ers and take care. Today's mail brought an SCP from James Moleta that I promptly threw out the window into the wet grass. It wasn't because it was a 1955 Yankee which cut my list to just 5 cards, but it was way too nice to put in the album the way James sent it, so I had to adjust it a little. (Plus it felt really good throwing a Yankee around ) THANKS JAMES!! Neal Thomas got a buddy of his in OCT (Chris Behrend) to hit my list with some razor sharp cards that I'll only describe as serially numbered. THANKS NEAL!! (and CHRIS!!) Special thanks to Trader Doug Smith, Jim Hatch and Sean McGowan for a very enjoyable evening swapping cards and stories last Saturday. I'd love to tell you all about the neat stuff I picked up at Sean's house, but the cards are still sitting there at his house - DOH!! I'll have to meet up with Sean again soon, so he can hit my list AGAIN this month. THANKS SEAN, JIM AND DOUG!! The final envelope remains somewhat of a mystery. Postmarked from nearby Worcester (which is pronounced Woo-stah by the locals, BTW), this envelope contained a couple older hockey cards and a gorgeous T205 Mattern. The note simply said "Found a couple." and is simply signed "Bob". The question is which Bob sent this to me? I've got it narrowed down to local Bob's Corvello, Donaldson, (Robert) Pigeon, Farrell, and Reed. However, I'm not ruling out a delivery by vacationing Bob's Neill, Saxton, D'Angelo, Schaub or Wells. Bob claims I started him on these black beauties awhile back and since then he's been swift and persistent in his attacks on my list. Also included in Bob's puffy was a wonderful 19*5 Fun Foods pin of none other than childhood hero Dale Murphy!!! I can't tell you how many packs of those darn pins I tore open, with no luck, trying to get a Murph! Don't know where they all went (I recently found 2 Darryl Strawberrys and a Joe Morgan stashed in a box?) but now thanks to Bob I finally have the man! Thanks a ton Bob! One from Geno Wagner, who continues to keep those cards a coming. Thanks Geno. You are an inspiration to me as well as many OBCers I'm sure. Three more beauties from Robert Pigeon, who introduces himself with not just any old cards, but three very nice cards including two high numbers. Thanks Robert. I thought my OBC directory was up to date but I guess not, since I couldn't find your email address, so I hope you subscribe to this server and are reading this. For anyone who has a minute or two to waist I thought I'd add a little ramble to this thank-you note... On a personal note from a proud father, I'd like everyone to know that my daughter, Heather made the Dean's List. She is a Senior at Bowling Green State University. Now if she could just find herself a good job. Anyone out there looking for someone to do a little interior design work? ;-) Back to baseball, I finished off my 1978 Topps set. The last two cards arrived in the mail recently from an auction win. In fact, there where four cards in the lot for card #708, so now I have three extras. I would like to share the wealth with the first three requests I get for these Rookie Catchers cards which feature a photo of a very young Dale Murphy along with Lance Parrish, Bo Diaz and Ernie Whitt. It took me awhile (just about everything takes me awhile any more) but I finally made it to Comerica Park. Not a bad place to watch a game, but I do miss Tiger Stadium. Well, I reckon that just about takes up my two minutes worth, Thanks Robert, Geno and OBC. ================= Date: Tue, 05 Jun 2001 16:21:22 -0700 To: OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com Subject: Thanks From: Alcazar A pair of thanks (two late and one just on time) First thanks to Steve Rittenberg who send a pair of 56 Topps cards (McDermott and Don Larsen) and a single hit to my 1954 Bowman list. Now, for the main reason for this note. You may have noticed I have been even less active than usual lately. There is a reason, other than my procrastination. For the last year and a half we have been working on adopting a daughter(s) from the Ukraine. Well, we're in the home stretch, and next weekwe leave for what will probably be a 4 week stay in the Ukraine. Now, none of us has ever left the US before (except for southern Canada, which doesn't count--other than the funny looking money, there's not much difference). We are taking our two teenage boys. So the four of us, speaking zero words of Ukranian between us, will be heading off for quite an adventure. Needless to say, the preparation for this has taken up a fair amount of our time, and thus OBC time has dwindled. When we come back I imagine it'll be the same for a few months--having a new family member who can't speak a word of your language certainly will make life interesting. We don't know if wewill end up adopting one or two girls yet (between 5-9 years old, probably). So, I'll be unregistering from the servers until we get back. If you were thinking of sending me cards, please hold up, as they'll be sitting in the post office, and who knows what they do to mail there--might even end up with bullet holes in them. Talk to you all later. ================= Date: Thu, 14 Jun 2001 19:38:53 -0500 To: OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com Subject: A few late ones From: David Kolenda Thanks go out to BoB Schaub and Andy Cook for a couple of packages that have arrived over the past few weeks. A great 1969 surrounded by an even dozen of 1967s with semi highs and puts it out of the park with 3 1961s with 2 of the very tough highs. Thanks again Yuk. Last but certainly not least is John Storman with a single 1968 and 14 1966s putting a nice dent in the beginning of the list. Thanks John. Last night I couldn't sleep and was up from 1 am until almost time to go to work. Bad for me but great for everybody in OBC. I put together about 20 packages that will be on the way by Saturday. I see many guys collect the OPC. I have a 1983 #52 Seaver if anybody wants it. I have enough to collect with Topps. Take care and thank you all again for the great cards. Date: Wed, 20 Jun 2001 11:03:39 -0400 From: "Chuck Paris" Two excellent incomings to report from yesterday ...... First, Jeff Sinclair sends 3 68's and a 72 Ed Brinkman and asks the famousquestion.... "Do you remember?" These cards brought back some great baseball memories as 68 was the first year of cards I remember buying and I was just thinking a few days ago of where I was when I heard about the big Denny McLain trade to the Senators that Brinkman was involved in. Thanks Jeff !!!! Also ...... Mark Atnip sends a few 55's and no less than 25 T206's including a Cycle 460 that I needed !!!!!!!! Mark says that he thinks this will "start" to dig him out of the hole. Steve Rittenberg, during his stunning assault of all people OBC-related, blasted me with '33 Goudeys --- Ballplayers and Indians. There's nothin' like well-loved and cherished cards that are more than 60 years old, is there? Thanks Steve -- youknow you dah man! And yesterday Mark Atnip dropped in on me, so to speak, with 2 '55 Bowmans and two Obaks! Wow! I can assure you that that does not happen every day!Mark, you also dah man! (My sons love it when I tell them, You dah MAN! -- they're only 12 and 14, so I guess it makes an impression....) Mariners fans apparently are putting their computer savvy to use and votingup to 25 times for their favorite players. John Olerud, Edgar Martinez, Brett Boone, and especially Ichiro are leading vote getters for the All Stargame, being held here in the Emerald City. There are no tickets availablefor the game and I don't think I could go to the Fan Fest things adjacent to the ballpark. It would just be torture being that close to the park without being able to get in for the game. But we do have cable and I'm driving my wife nuts as I attempt to watch every Mariner's game that is televised.....What can I say? I'm watching a team that never seems to psych themselves out and makes things happen when there are 2 outs or 2 strikes or down by 2. I do have tickets I bought back in February for the first game after the All Star break against the SF Giants. I will be sitting in the CF bleachers waiting for Mr. Bonds to launch one in my general direction! As many of you know I love these oddball issues and these are great!!! Thanks Doug!!! Erik Greenwood send me another waiver claim (it seems as if Erik always has something for me off the wire). This time some nifty `70's Kellogg's Cereal cards are shipped my way via Chino Hills. Erik includes a `74 Ron Santo and Wayne Twitchell, as well as a `79 Ted Simmons. I know a return package is long overdue and I assure you I am working on it. These are great Mike Hair (Vegas Golf Pro) includes me in the latest mail barrage with a 3fer. A `58 Topps card of Tiger Frank Lary and (2) `59's with Albie Pearson and Joe Koppe. Its great to knock off a few more off the old want list. I thank you Mike!!! Brock Hattox cannot stand it when you finally get caught up or even surpass him in the ongoing trade that "never seems to end". Just as I was feeling good about the "SO THERE" package I had recently sent off to Brock - HE HAMMERS ME AGAIN!!! This time with some beauties from the `55 Bowman set Hoyt Wilhelm, Elston Howard - RC, Johnny Temple and Umpire Charles Berry are now a part of my growing collection. These are nice ones guys - I cut myself on the Temple card. You just wait Mr. Hattox - I'll get you yet!!! Peter Iverson turns my head quite a few times with a package he had written to me about some time ago. A monster stack of @150 `80 Topps Football cards weighted down poor Wyatt my postal carrier and now I have substantially brought the cards needed in that set down to a respectable number. I added those Basketball and Football sets just with the last year and many of them have taken considerable hits from you fellas. It won't be long before I have to add Hockey (ala Steve Rittenberg) to ensure further trading within the group. Such a dilemma!!! Marshall West, for a very nice "company issued" `61 Post Cereal card of Yankee Hector Lopez. I can see the factory "perfs" on the card and believe that it is the first "factory" card that I now have for the set. Don't worry Marshall the tape stains simply assure me that some previous collector also enjoyed this card. Marshall also includes a Colorado Rockies schedule causing me to contemplate the addition of "skeds" to my collecting repertoire. Somebody please tell me I am nuts!!!! Thanks Marshall!!! Like that is some major cardboard fellas for the week - I am humbled again!!! Collecting the way it should be is OBC and to all of you I thank you for your generosity and wish you all well!!! First up is a really nice, sharp-condition group of 1975 Topps Mini's from Robert Pigeon. I mean, these cards were "blazers" and are easily the best among all the mini's I have so far. They're sharp enough to shave with, which reminds me to announce that after twelve years, I have removed my beard - with a Gillette Trac 3, not with the 1975 Mini's. Thanks very much, Robert. The second incoming delight was my notification of "6,249,789" - which is the U.S. Patent number issued June 19, 2001 for "Method of calculating time-sensitive work algorithms using inputs with different variable effective intervals," by Wayne Delia, et. al. Rick Redpath sends along a couple of great cards from 58 and 59, both direct hits to the shrinking lists in those years. When I was a golf course in Lake Tahoe, I had a friend (Richard Andersen) who was the vice president of the Marlins, and before that with the Pirates. Richard would come to Tahoe a few times a year, and before coming would send me a letter with his itinerary (and where he wanted to play golf). I would make it a point to leave his envelopes, with a return address of a major league team, so that everyone could see it and draw the only logical conclusion...that I had been drafted for the bigs. Today an envelope arrived that rivals Richard's... from our own Dr. Robert Fitts Ph D, of GOTHAM ARCHAEOLOGY, LLC. Quite a distinguished return address for others to ponder. And, to top it off, the good doctor continued with the assault on the 58s with a foursome to go with the 64 Bill Rigney. Thanks guys for the great cards, they are greatly appreciated.
