In an effort to bring my want list down to earth with some achievable goals, I've added the 1975 Topps Mini's. Mac Wubbin sends along a sharp-looking dozen cards from the set, including the Red Sox centerfielder, Rick Miller, who was displaced that year by a brash rookie named Fred Lynn. Miller's wearing a home Boston white uniform with the number 6 on the back, which he later changed to number 3 according to the media guides from the mid-70's. Since the Red Sox are my favorite team, and 3 is my favorite number, I began collecting game-worn, home and away Boston uniform tops with the number 3 on the back (my former internet account was "Redsox3" in my early days in OBC) and at least three of the nine uniforms I have belonged to Rick Miller. The uniform from 1975 was a scratchy, doubleknit polyester (a better picture is on Rick Burleson's card, also included in the group Mac sent me) which nearly requires an undershirt if the uniform is to be worn a long time. I plan on wearing the uniform for the longest possible time: my last will and testament leaves instructions that when I die, I wish to be cremated while wearing my 1975 Red Sox away uniform. Would have liked to request that my ashes be spread on the left side of the infield dirt at Fenway, but that would seem like I'm a fanatic or something. Can't have that, right? Anyway, I'll join everybody else in thanking Big Mac for his recent Wayne M. Capt. Geno Wagner mailed a Face, and Major Matt Shirley mailed a Boog. Geno notes the lack of an outfield fence in Roy Face's photo from 65 Topps....perhaps that really explains some of Roy's amazing relief statistics in the early 60's !! Thanks Captain for the fenceless Face ! Matt sent high numbered Boog, which I noted could very well be Boog's post-playing weight, #560 !! He didn't look too good in the uniform ( recent Red Sox fans think Rich Garces....hey those pants look good, Rich....really !!), but Boog could hit them over a fence....if there was one !! Thanks today to Matt and Geno, but thanks everyday to all of you in OBC world ( I've taken the lead in nicknaming the 65 Topps set...does anyone else call them the Pennants ?) ================= Date: Thu, 10 May 2001 20:25:12 EDT Subject: Thanks to Roger Raum To: OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com From: amcook93@aol.com Thanks to ROGER RAUM for an SCP 1978 Hostess Dan Ford! ================= To: Subject: Thanks to DI-A-MONDO Date: Fri, 11 May 2001 14:47:03 -0700 From: "Grant Rainsley" Mike Diamanti repatriated some OPC's to Canada, and tossed in some wrapping material. Steve Rittenberg - who seems to be purging himself of his cards from all the thanks being posted. Steve sent 6 1953 Bowman B & W, putting me past the 1/2 way point on this surprisingly tough set. Steve also sent along a 1960 Leaf high number (see ramble on these) a couple of 1952 Topps BB and 14 9yes 14) 1953 Topps BB, including 3 high numbers. This puts me under 100 to finish the set. WOW. I see major damage to someone's OPC list forthcoming. Erik Greenwood, who I spoke to on the phone about the Toronto show, nails me with 10 1979 OPC BB I still needed. Not just any 10, all HOFers, Yaz, Stargell, Jackson, etc. I only picked up 2 or 3 cards on this set in Toronto, but Erik is putting the pressure on me to really work on this set. Thanks Erik, another set to move onto the main wantlist soon. Andy Cook shocks me with my very first 1933 Ice King a V357 for those of you who know how they catelog sets. To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com, OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com From: Jrhatchjr@aol.com G'day all! James Moleta made his way to Boston this weekend and last night he and I met at Ken Morganti's place for an OBC style swap session. After being about 30 minutes late myself (courtesy of a 16 year old grocery store cashier with an IQ to match), I arrived at Ken's place surprised to find James not there yet. When I found out why, I wasn't surprised at all as trying to navigate through Boston is like being blindfolded while walking through a mine field. Rick Redpath was already there...in spirit anyway as he had sent an envelope to the law office of Morganti, Moleta and Hatch in absence of the real thing. James arrived shortly after me (along with Tommy), though and we started to dig in. First order of business was Rick Redpath's offering. We opened his envelope and found a dozen 1967 Topps cards with hits to each of our lists. My portion included a couple of rookie cards and the World Series Winners card, along with a 1969 Topps hit. Thank you Rick!! Throughout the night we swapped stories about some of our greatest finds (I'm still waiting for the biggie), the ones that got away and the ones we didn't care about. One nifty tidbit I wasn't aware of is that Wally Westlake has the same middle name as Bucky Dent ;-) Also fun was that we all revealed our souls and talked about our rookie card speculations of the eighties. Mike Greenwell....Kevin Maas....Hensley Meulens....Sid Fernandez...Joe Charbonneau...Sam Horn...and on and on and on. OUCH! Its been said that admission is the first step to recovery. I do feel a lot better, now. Anyone wanna Kal Daniels rookie?? Anyway, back to the old stuff. James apologized to me, saying he had left some cards for me at the hotel. No worries from me of course, but he must have felt awful about it because he gave me some hits to my list from what he had with him: a 1967 semi high, 1971 versions of McCovey and Tommy John and a 1972 Hank Aaron!! WOW! Thanks so much for the cool cards James! You can forget cards for me anytime :-) Ken got hold of my wantlists and he went through them like a hot knife through butter. For starters, he picked off four hits to my 1972 list, including a Torre and a Maury Wills IA card. Then, he ravaged my 1971 list knocking off 48 cards!!! Included in the pile were Knucksie Neikro, Jim Kaat, Gil Hodges, Red Schoendienst and 7 semi highs!! Holy cow! Thanks a bunch for the bunch of cards Ken! We lost track of time and after being an hour and a half later than planned, James and Tommy had to leave. It was a pleasure meeting James...I had a great time! But wait...there's more! After James left, Ken wanted to go through my 1970 Topps list. So, he sliced and diced his way through it, coming up with a total of 24 hits including a Bob Gibson! Unbelievable! Again, a very big thank you Ken! Then, Ken led me to his vault. As you can imagine, its quite the sight to see... almost like a baseball card shrine. I actually got to hold Ken's 1952 Topps Mantle. This was the first one I've touched and will probably be as close to having one as I'll ever get. Good thing it was in a heavy plastic holder...my sweaty hands didn't affect it any. Ken also gave me a lesson in variations: 1959 Topps "optioned statement" variations, 1968 white letter variations, and so on. I think he drew the line though when I asked him if he was going to collect the different backs in his newly started T205 set :-) What a great time! Thank you James and Ken for a fantastic night...OBC style! Happy Collecting!

From: Mark Talbot Hello Everyone, A few weeks have past since my last Thank you posting and as usual there are plenty of thanks to spread around. So let's begin the batting line up: My friend Dan "the man" Austin leads it off, a few weeks back he sent me a waiver claim of an Atlantic Oil card of Joe Horlen and a `72 Psycho variation of Juan Pizarro. But he did not stop there, my eyes opened wide when I saw the monster lot of `71 OPC Baseball that Dan sent. There were two stacks of these Canadian wonders because dan had sent along one huge stack of `71 OPC's from Steve Rittenberg. Some great stuff in this stack like; Orioles team, Callison, Conception, Gaston, Niekro, Tiant, Maz, Lolich, Perry, Kaat, Pinson, Torre, Weaver, John, Blyleven, Piniella, Chance, Horton, Carew, Bowa, Northrup, Jenkins, Bonds and a Tiger Team card. At least a couple hundred cards in all - Thanks BIG TIME to Dan and Steve. Another belated thanks goes out to Bob Corvello - ye olde friar send me an eclectic group of cardboard, (2) `60 Topps cards with Mincher and the World Series Card from game 1 as well as a ~64 topps of Ed Bailey catcher for the Milwaukee Braves. Thanks for the nice group of cards Bob, and WELCOME TO VCT!!! Erik Greenwood slips me a SCP of one of my favorite players Carl Yastrzemski from the `79 OPC set which leaves me with a mere dozen remaining on that list. This card is out of the pack fresh and still has the slight hit of gum aroma that still lingers (eat your heart out Catfish). What a nice surprise Erik!!! Today the man from Atlanta, Brock Hattox once again reminds me that I will always be searching for cards on his list sends along a surprise package of `54 Topps cards. In the mix were names like Ashburn, Doby, Bauer, Gilliam and Kuenn. A total of 9 hits to the `54 Topps list bringing that set to within 10 cards of completion (Of course of the 10 I need both Williams cards, J. Robinson, Mays, Aaron, Lasorda, Skowron and Kaline - so it will be a while). Thanks Brock for getting me as close as I will probably get without going to eBay. Many of you have recently received a package from Mike Kinney and the Talbot residence was no exception. Mike sends along (4) great looking specimens for my want list. First there were (2) big hits to my `59 Topps set, Cardinal Hal Smith and Cubbie Dolan Nichols. But I was really impressed by the (2) BIG HITS to my shrinking `61-`62 Fleer Baseball Greats list both HOF pitchers Hal Newhouser and Red Ruffin. This is one of my favorite sets and I'm down to 45 (mostly those pesky `62 Hi number series) to go to finish off the set - Thanks again Mike, your "active" presence will be missed from OBC!!! The OBCer that introduced me to the group via a purchase (possible ramble topic) from eBay Bill Malson sends along a SCP from the wavier wire, a nice looking `60 Topps HI number of southpaw pitcher Bill Henry of the Cincinnati Reds. Well Bill, Thanks for the Bill. Steve Rittenberg sends me his own package in a recent mass mailing that has touched the doorsteps of many OBC member Steve blasts me with a number of `76 Kelloggs card and (7) Fleer Baseball First cards. I just love these "oddball" cards and Steve told me about these really cool cards about 6 months ago, I'm sure glad he got around to sending some of them my way. I hardly ever see these at the local card shows. Oh yea, I almost forgot Steve tucked in there an old Goudey card of Dave Harris, a pinch hitter for the Washington Senators who according to the back of the card doubled as a sheriff of Greensboro, N.C. These will all be great additions to my collection Steve so its double thanks to you !!!! OBC stalwart Bob Saxton sends along a very nice `53 Archives reprint of knuckleballer Hoyt Wilhelm in a New York Giant uniform. It seems to me that Hoyt pitched forever, I remember seeing him pitch as a boy when he was a member of the White Sox. Hoyt was 3rd all-time in games pitched (1,070) and 1st in games finished (651) and games won in relief (123); career ERA of 2.52 and 227 saves; 1st reliever inducted into Hall of Fame (1985). Thanks for the unmentionable card but mostly for the memories of a great relief man. Finally, the "New Guy", Bob Schaub repays me for an earlier package with (4) `61-`62 Fleer Baseball Greats including Tinkers, Terry, Bridges and none other than Stan Hack!!! I have always loved this set and now thanks to Bob I am 4 cards closer to completion. THANKS BOB!!! Well Thanks guys for keeping me just busy enough to keep my mind in my hobby a bit of late. I know that I need to get some stuff out and to contact a number of you about trades. I hope to get to some of that shortly - till then BE WELL!!! THANKS STEVE!! The cards handed to me in Vegas don't have return addresses on the envelopes, but I'm going to do my best to remember which cards go to which person. Big thanks to everybody, not sure who handed me what...came home with a stack of stuff including some '64s, '56s, phillies, a '67 Mantle (from David K.), and a bunch of memories. Even managed to keep my girlfriend (no thanks to Ken!) after having her meet a bunch of card crazed baseball nuts. Thanks to Grant who hits my mailbox with a '80 OPC Rose and a few other OPCs as packing material including two upgrades. Thanks Grant. He knocked a whole line of my list getting me down to just 16 lines until the list hits 18 pages (sounds odd but...that is the Phillies monster). ================= Date: Sat, 26 May 2001 23:09:42 -0500 To: OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com Subject: Thanks From: Michael Wierzbicki Thanks this week go out to Steve Rittenberg, who completed a large trade with two envelopes filled to the brim with hits to my 1957 through 1962 lists. STEVE RITTENBERG also checked in again - I'm still reeling from the last package he sent, so what does he do but work a trade w/`me, where my end nets 5 52 Topps hi #'s...and these are the real thing!! Thanks Steve! I also, sadly, will not be attending the National, as I had originally planned. However, one of my stops would've been w/ OBC-friendly dealer ROGER NEUFELDT. Well, Roger made his way to Atlanta for a show this weekend, and I managed to procure several key cards from 09-72, including my first two Hindu-backed T206s, one of whom was Speaker! I also netted an Old Mill 3 Finger Brown, A Waddell, and my first 2 Canadian Jello cards, which are pretty neat! Thanks Roger! Guys, be sure to track Roger down at the National, or the next show near you in the Southern US (hes from OK, and does several shows throughout the SE)...no, I didnt get a discount for this plug, either! Anyway, some long overdue thanks: To Rex Stahlman, who sends a Todd Helton insert from the 2001 set; Dave Fallen, who sends a pair of Aaron chrome inserts (including the rookie card), and three UD Immaculate Perception cards -- Nomar, Chipper, and Maddux. Lots of UV there, but thanks are in order nonetheless. And a big thanks to Erik Greenwood, who sends some originals -- Harmon Killebrew and Richie Ashburn -- from the 1956 set. Thanks out today to rookie Robert Pigeon. I know that officially I may still be a rookie also. I don't hit the year mark until June/July timeframe (can you imagine? time flies when you're having fun), but I'll leave that up to the OBCAC. Robert is no rookie to me however, he and I have traded a few times in the past. Robert comes through with an even 10 hits to the 65 set, most of which make my other 65's bow in disgrace. Highlights of this exquisite looking bunch of cardboard are Joe Torre, a young flat-topped Tommy John, and a trophy card of none other than Rico Carty! Many thanks Robert!!!
