Show Report and thanks (long) To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com, OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com From: Jrhatchjr@aol.com As I write this, the 16th annual GBSCC show is winding down. I didn't go today, but did go Friday and Saturday. Here's a report from north of the (Massachusetts) border... FRIDAY: Arrived for the opening bell at noon. I had never attended this show on a Friday, but since I had the day off (and really didn't want to rake leaves) I decided to see if I could beat some of the weekend crowds to the bargains. Beat the crowds? Yes...seemingly a busy day for a weekday (lots of people didn't want to rake leaves, I guess) and certainly less than any weekend day. Beat them to the bargains? Not a chance! Bargains were scarce on day one: "bargain boxes" offered no real bargains and beater pre-war was nonexistent. Best buy was some 1970 high numbers for .25 each and some cards from Ron Wheeler. Was I disappointed? Hell no! I met up with Steve Rittenberg and Rick Redpath at the show. The three of us wandered desperately to find some good cards all afternoon. Steve was staying the weekend with me, so after the show he followed me back to my place for some dinner and some card flipping. The version of this game is a little different than normal. You see, Steve will dig into his dupes box(es) and hand me piles of cards: 2 from 1967 including a Pete Rose, 4 from 1969 including a Kaline and a McCovey, two from the birthyear 1970 set and 8 from 1972 (one semi-high and 7 highs)!!! Once again, Steve is a one man wrecking crew demolishing my wantlists! Thanks Steve! I did a lot better AFTER the show :-) SATURDAY: Steve and I were at the front of the line and when the gates opened, we made a bee line to Ron Wheeler's table. He had some fresh material out, most of which I will try to find homes for soon. Did pick up a W516-1 Ray Schalk for short money, which may have been a sign of things to come. While wandering around, I bumped into Bob Donaldson and Spike Glidden. OK...there's four of us here. Then, while wandering around before lunch, I saw a pile of M.P.& Co. strip cards on a dealer's table. That certainly caught my eye and when I got to the table, who was already examining them but Brett Domue!! Brett really wasn't sure whether he wanted them or not, so I decided to be helpful and offered to split the lot with him. That was good enough for him and it certainly was good enough for me: the lot included almost a full set with a bunch of dupes. At noon lunch, Brett split them VERY generously in my favor. If that wasn't enough for him, he also gave me THREE E96 cards including a Fred Clarke! THANKS BRETT!! Bob Donaldson also gave me a stack of cardboard that included hits to my 1972 and 1973 lists. THANK YOU BOB!! Spike Glidden let me go through his dupes boxes and out of two boxes, I could only find one card on my list: a 1970 Nolan Ryan!!! If that's not an SCP, I don't know what is! THANKS SPIKE!! My only regret was not meeting up with Robert Pigeon, who did end up making the drive to the show. Damn...last year I missed meeting Andy Baran and this year Robert Pigeon. Robert sent a regret (of sorts) as for the second straight year, I had an OBC package waiting for me when I got home Saturday! Robert sent along a 1969 Deckle Edge Yaz! THANK YOU ROBERT!! The afternoon session led to some other good deals. I picked up some beater T218's and T220's for real short money. As I was leaving, I walked by Randy Kniffin's table who apparently just acquired some T and E cards. I searched through the small pile and found three Obaks! I rifled through my checklist and wouldn't you know that I needed one of them!! Unfortunately, I was a nice one and he was asking a little too much for my meager guideline. I asked if I upped the price a little if he would throw in any pre-war beater. He then produced a T206 Southern Leaguer! Yippee!! An Obak hit!! Saturday night, Steve and I started going through some wantlists while listening to the Yankees get torched by Arizona. Before we knew it, Pettitte was out of the game and the rout was on. We decided that this was too good to pass up, so we went to watch the game in the living room while I helped him sort out his dupes boxes. What a night...seeing the Yanks get their heads kicked in and sorting through all of Steve's neat cards! It was great seeing everyone at the show and a pleasure hosting Steve for the weekend. This is the one show I look forward to every year and it never disappoints. It's also a great place to meet up with other OBC'ers to swap cards and stories. Thanks gang!! Same time, next year? I'll be there, for Happy Collecting! ================= To: , Subject: GBSCC Show and Thanks Date: Sun, 4 Nov 2001 17:47:58 -0500 From: "Bob Donaldson" I spent this Saturday at the Shriners show in the company of Spike, Steve, Brett and Jim. The show was great with lots of old beatup cardboard. I was able to do some damage to many of my older sets. However, the best part of the show by far was saying hi to some OBC members. All of whom I owe a Jim Hatch - Gives my a pile of cards from my mid 60's and early 70's Spike Glidden - Thrusts his dup box at me from which I am able to do some damage to my 55 Bowman set. Steve Rittenburg - Hands me a brick of cards, telling me he found a few things from my wantlist. He practically cut my wantlist in half! There were many sports cards, many sports cards collectors and a few OBCers too. I ran into Jim Hatch, as I had hoped to, soon after I arrived early in the afternoon. Jim was outfitted in a bright pink floral number, designer unknown, that made him easy to spot in the large auditorium. My hooky-ness was quickly rewarded when Jim handed me a couple of fine cards for my collection: a young Jerry Reuss, for the Longevity project; and an old Lew Krausse of the Red Sox which was the final 1973 Sox card I needed. 15 minutes into the show and I finish a set! Thank you Jim! I also saw Steve Rittenberg, sporting a gray T-shirt (Hanes perhaps?) which allowed him to blend in with and frequently disappear into the medium size crowd as he dug around for o-pee-chee treasures. I'm afraid I disappointed Steve by taking off into rush-hour traffic to get home for dinner without first rifling through his big dupes box which was out in the car. But, fortunately, I think Steve was able to unload some of the dupes on Jim and the other guys who showed up on Saturday. There were a few OBC-friendly bargains in the few junk boxes I was able to locate. I picked up a unique colorized 1953 Bowman black and white that looks like someone had taken a paint brush to it to brighten it up a little. I also found a nicely softened T206 Turner, Cleveland, with pencil highlights to color in the face a little. This one looks a bit like the Cy Young portrait card (if you really squint) and I mentioned that to Mr. Hatch, a connoisseur of Tiptonia himself, and of course Jim suggested I just cross out the "Turner" and write in "Young" to spruce up the card a little... An excellent idea :-) Sorry I couldn't escape soccer-game watching and leaf-mowing duties on the weekend so that I could sneak back up to the show and meet up with the others who turned out on Saturday. But it was nice to read the write-ups and know that this was a fine New England OBC weekend. And because this is the thanks server I will remind myself to say Thanks to Jim Hatch for doing his part to organize the get-togethers and for the great cards as well. This ranks up there with Lynn Miller sending me the '52 Billy rookie, and those of you who teamed up to buy me the '54 Glendale Meats Billy Hoeft. My OPC Baseball list was assaulted by none other than Bob Schuab. Bob connects with 36 direct hits to my `72 OPC Baseball set. Guys like Morgan, McCarver, Kingman RC, Dierker, D. Evans, Hough RC, Mincher, Pepitone, B. Robinson and team cards of the Brewers and Padres. A very nice addition to the old collection Bob. Combined with some huge eBay lots that came in the past few days I am wallowing in a sea of old smelly cardboard. Yes - its heaven on earth. Some very nice diversions fellas I must thank you both. Date: Fri, 9 Nov 2001 13:23:53 -0800 From: "Grant Rainsley" about this being Billy Hoeft Week. Not only did Ebay send me that elusive '79 Michigan Postcard, Mike Rich hit me with a personally personalized auto'd pic of Billy. Today, "Legs" Diamanti hit me with my third '54 Dixie Lid of Billy. No, it's not a dupe, turns out this is a variation/variation. Let me explain please. These were the lids of little ice cream containers you could buy off the truck playing all the lousy music. This lid has the same picture on the front, but has Hagen Hobby Ice Cream on the back, the other two are Borden's and Thompson's. That is the first variation. All three lids have the little tab intact that you used to pull to get the lid off. Upon examination of the one Mike sent, it simply jumps out at you that the tab is on the left, the other two have the tabs on the right. Therefore, I now have a '54 Dixie Lid Billy Hoeft variation/variation. Very cool, thanks Mike! P.S. Does anyone know how many back variations there were? It was worth the wait. After tearing up most of what arrived (ads, loan/credit card offers, etc.) I was left with a few packages with cards in them. Three people combined to hit my newly started 1961 Post cereal set - Mike Hair, Dan Austin and Matt Shirley sent 17 cards between the three of them including Maz, Kuenn, Cash, Martin and Haddix. THANKS MIKE, DAN and Returning member Linda Fitak returns to Everett with a puffy full of oddballs and a trio of non-oddballs that make by day=DA Two of the last three on my 1968 set (leaving just the Maris for completion of my second set) plus a high number 1967 to move me a step closer to that set. THANKS LINDA!! Also arriving just before I left for Atlanta was an envelope from Rick Svetecz that I may not have sent out thanks for... three or four more high numbers for the 67 set. THANKS RICK!! While in Atlanta, I had the pleasure of meeting up with Brock Hattox, James Moleta, potential OBC'er Richard Hankins, and my most excellent host Mac Wubben. I was able to pry a few T205's away from James (plus a HUGE hit to the 48/49 Leaf set - Doerr!) and Mac (including a pair of gold border HOF'ers!) via trade and was pleased to find a card on Brock's list as well. Date: Thu, 15 Nov 2001 20:50:52 -0500 From: "galtemos" Howard Cosell was an overrated windbag who loved nothing better than to hear himself talk. He was the most irritating and obnoxious announcer in the history of sports. (IMHO) Unfortunately, for many years ABC had programming that millions wanted to watch, including Monday Night Football and Muhammad Ali's boxing matches...........and, if you wanted to watch these, you had to take Howard Cosell as part of the package, because ABC sports was run by Roone Arledge, who thought Howard was just terrific. I could never decide whom in sports I hated more.........Howard Cosell or Roone Arledge. I also Jackie Robinson play, many times. And he was indeed the most exciting player of his generation. I can remember him walking in from the centerfield clubhouse at the Polo Grounds, on July 4, 1956..........the Dodgers played a doubleheader against the Giants that day. For some reason, Robinson entered the field late, when practice was nearly over. "Walking" actually does not adequately describe the way Jackie Robinson moved across the field..........."strutting" would be more accurate. Half the people in the stands gave him a standing ovation, and the other half booed............no one ignored him. The closest reaction I can think of in the game today is the response to Roger Clemens when the Yankees play the Mets. The Dodgers swept the doubleheader that day, 11-1 and 10-0, as Duke Snider hit three home runs. I loved every minute of it. But, good as Jackie Robinson was, was he the greatest all-around athlete this country has produced? Surely not. I think the greatest athlete has to be the greatest player in the greatest sport. That sport would be baseball, and the greatest player was Babe Ruth. Most fortunately, he was also a great person, as well........truly our greatest sports hero. > From: jazzgirl1920s@aol.com > To: obc-thanks@yahoogroups.com > Subject: [OBC-Thanks] Thanks for cards received today- Mike Hair is > Date: Thursday, November 15, 2001 5:47 PM > hello this is Linda- i got some really nice cards in the mail today-- > to Ron Perry for sending me a lot of nice reprints including 6 52's from > 1995 Brooklyn Dodgers set- 3 are hi numbers i sure don't have the > of for my 52 set- #319,389,390- i have seen the Ben Wade and Al Walker > occasionally in low grade on ebay but haven't even come close to winning > them- now thanks to Ron i can see what the cards look like not all beat > included also in the cards is a nice smiling Gil Hodges card from that > Williams Card Co set and a TCMA Baseball's Greatest hitters card of > Robinson-my father said the most thrilling thing he had ever seen in a > baseball game was Robinson stealing home in the World Series- Robinson > also a star in basketball and football and track and field at my old > Mater - UCLA in Los Angeles. Since that time, both Nolan Ryan (98.79%) and Tom Seaver (98.84%) have exceeded Cobb's percentage. While this is both interesting and informative, I do not think it would indicate that Ryan and Seaver were better players than either Cobb or Ruth. I think you have to pick Ruth, because he was both a great hitter and a great pitcher. Incidentally, Ruth also stole 123 bases, which is not all that far behind Jackie Robinson's total of 197. While I was not present at the first vote, I did present a letter of recommendation for the election of Abner Doubleday, who was a personal friend of mine. > From: alcattle@mailexcite.com > To: OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com > Subject: [OBC-Thanks] Re: Beg to differ > Date: Friday, November 16, 2001 6:34 PM > --- In OBC-Thanks@y..., Traderdoug@a... wrote: > > In a message dated 11/15/2001 7:59:12 PM Central Standard Time, > > galtemos@s... writes: > > > > << the greatest player was Babe Ruth. >> > > > > Well help me if my memory is wrong, but when the original HOF was > chosen the > > guy who got the most votes was not Babe Ruth. The innocent looking envelope arrived today, showing no obvious signs of the treasure lying within, although there was an extra stamp mysteriously affixed, and there was a good deal of tape sealing up the back, perhaps to keep the radiation out... I casually opened it up, but it's pretty hard to keep a poker face when you pull a Koufax out of an OBC envelope. Whoa, How You Doin'!?! What was John thinking? Was he giddy from his trip to the mall, looking at and snickering at the $600.00 Mantle card? Was it beer night for dinner at the Collins home that evening? Did he misunderstand what his mentor told him about how OBC works? Who is his mentor for crying out loud, Lynn Miller?!? Actually, I guess I could find out who his mentor is. Let's see, where's Geno's notice about the new members... All right, here we go... There he is... John Collins, Mentor: Thomas. Ah yes, Mr. Thomas. One of our finest recruiters. I can just picture Neal and John during orientation week, discussing how you decide what to send to whom, and when. Neal: Okay, John, here's a hypothetical. Suppose someone sends you a little welcome to OBC note along with a couple of smushed 1955 Topps cards. An appropriate response from you would be to: A: send a thank-you email note, acknowledging that the cards arrived mostly in one piece... B: look to see if you have a beat up old card from the guy's list that's just taking up space in your dupes box, maybe a nice Fred Kipp or a Zeke Bella, somebody like that to pass along... C: send a sharp 1956 Topps Sandy Koufax right away! John: I Gotta go with "C" Neal Neal: Excellent! I think we're done here! Anyway, I guess we'll never know what motivates a new OBCer to such absurdity, but time will tell whether he will regain his senses or slip further down the path of... I don't even want to think about it. The only disturbing thing about this whole episode, and I hesitate to bring it up, is that John described this card in a way that suggests to me he might have sent the wrong one. He told me in the strictest confidence :-) that he had actually upgraded his Koufax card and was sending me a pretty Tiptonized specimen that would be right at home with the rest of my collection. Yo, wait a second, have the standards in this group slipped so far that a card with a light crease or two and a small rip and a dinged corner now qualifies as a Tipton?!? Neal! Didn't you cover this in the training?!? Sheesh. First clean top loaders, and no sticky tape residue, and now perfectly nice Koufax cards being passed off as Tiptons? Where is it going to end, my friends? All right, enough. John, thanks so much for the truly wonderful card and the even more amazing and thoughtful gesture. To: OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com From: WMDpks@aol.com Quite a few packages in lately, and I also want to thank so many of you for your good words about my black belt promotion. I'm proud of the accomplishment, but I'm more relieved that it's all over and I can now "grow old gracefully." And I can't find the words to say how proud I am of both my children - Joe, age 8, also 1st degree Black Belt, and Lisa, age 6, 2nd degree Brown Belt. Our favorite and newest CEO, Brock Hattox, sent a beautiful-condition first card of the modern baseball card era - 1948 Bowman, #1 Bob Elliot. I always loved these cards because they looked so basic and so old. Only 20 years after they were issued, the first year I began collecting cards, I took some 1968 Topps Sporting News All-Star cards and cut just the player photo off the card. The result was a set of 20 cards in the approximate style and shape of 1948 Bowmans. They looked pretty cool and I still have those "slightly trimmed" cards in my collection. Brock says it's in exchange for an extra copy of the Baseball Card Images CD I sent him, which I appreciate, but there's no need to compensate me for that. Updated CDs are available, new categories, almost 15,000 cards still around 570MB of digital image data, free for the asking. Thanks, Brock! Gary Mandell sent some elusive 1968's and 1977 Topps cards for me, Neal Thomas sends a few more 1977's, and - get this - Earl Kilbourn completes my Topps 1980 set with a single common I was missing. My sincere thanks to each of you guys. As always, I'll see if I can find a few "commons" for you (get some of the older members to tell you what I consider "commons"!) Gary, let me know if you have any success in finding a Ty Cobb Callahan at the big show you're going to this weekend. I've located a few Callahan "high numbers" (later years cards) which you probably don't have. Gary and I are going to become the expert authorities on this set. The Burdick American Card Catalog identifies 1950-56 Callahan as "W576". I also got a huge puffy from Linda Fitek, our vaudeville star. This is no ordinary puffy. It's a beautiful mix of cards from the 40's to the 80's, and all of them are valuable additions to my regular set collection and type cards. We're talking about 1940 Play Ball Bing Miller, 1977 TCMA Reynolds, Frisch, and Roberts, 1948 Bowman Augie Galan, a couple of 1955 Bowmans, just a wonderful assortment. Linda, I've got a 1940 Play Ball Al Schacht you were looking for, but it's not the one where he's lying down on second base with a top hat - that's the 1939 Play Ball issue (I've got one of them, too!) Let me know which one you want (or both, even!) If I remember correctly, Al Schacht (the "Clown Prince of Baseball") set a record for most stolen bases following a single at bat - five. Apparently, he walked, stole second, STOLE FIRST, then stole second, third, and home. Following that, they made a rule that runners could only advance forward. And to answer your question...the only football on my list are the 72's. Yep, that's right, I chose one of the toughest football sets :) But I lived in Miami in 72, and witnessed the Dolphins undefeated season from the 50 yardline of the Orange Bowl (my Dads boss shared season tickets :). Even though the 72 football is tough (hi #'s, etc.), OBC is responsible for many of the tougher cards, like the Bradshaw that Ken just sent me (above). Amazing! OBC rocks!! Jim Hatch - for a 78 (Murphy) and 79. Thank you Jim! Thanks for all the great cards. Thanks OBC! Now that the Holidays are fast approaching, I will finally have some time to become more active in the group. I'll post some availables soon. From: Mark S Talbot Hello all, Another couple of days with plenty of cardboard to talk about. Lets get to the kudos: Old trader friend Lorin Anderson sends a SCP of the waiver wire that will certainly look good in the collection. A very nice Eldon Repulski from the `54 Bowman set. With a name like Eldon it's no wonder he was known as "Rip". Way to go Lorin - I like the cardboard!!! Pre-war traders founder Andy Cook lays a few more pre-war issues on me with an American Caramel of Albert Bridwell and a Batter-up card of Lon Warneke. This cards are really hard to come by in any condition and I appreciate your generosity Andy!!! My first package in quite a while from Linda Fitak which does not disappoint as she sends out a `39 Playball of Pinky Shoffner, a `51 Bowman of Bob Hooper, a `53 Topps of Cliff Fannin, a `63 Fleer of Gene Freese, a `69 Milton bradley of Tony Horton, an `86 Sporting News card of Rube Marquard, a TCMA reprint of a Goudey Wide print of Frank Crosetti, an `86 Leaf Stand up of Wade Boggs and an `80 scratch-off panel with Horner, Valentine and Martin. Linda also includes a cooooooool "self made" illustration of Alice Faye and a portrait of a very pretty lady in a vaudeville "flappers" costume (has to be Linda herself). Our local archeologist Rob Fitts sends a `65 Topps of White Sox catcher J.C.Martin. Now this card is a real "10" because it says so on the front of the card. The numbers 5,6,7,8,9 and 10 are clearly written on the face of the card. All but the "10" is crossed out so this must of been one of those early "graded" cards by a very young expert. You got to love it Rob - I know I do!!! From Peachtree in Atlanta Richard Hankins checks in with some excellent specimens. To get the ball rolling Richard pop me a `55 Bowman of Jim Greengrass, a `55 Topps of Tom Carroll, a `60 Leaf of Bob Friend, a `60 Topps of John Blanchard, a `62 Woodie of FRANK ROBINSON (WOW!!!!), and (3) `63 Fleers of Hobbie, Amalfitano and Bolling. Super stuff Richard. Well that's it for now - I got to get some more cardboard out to some of you. Perhaps over the weekend - but I plan to hook up with Mike Rich and "go nuts" over all the stuff he picked up for me in Toronto. Nonetheless I will do my best to get some more packages out. In 1980, I had saved all the cards I collected as a young whippersnapper in the 1950's. However, I had no idea there was such a thing as an organized "hobby" of "baseball card collecting." In the airport, on the way to Little Dix Bay in the Caribbean, I saw the Beckett catalog in the bookstore, and I bought it and took it with me. For the next week, I lay there on the beach, drinking pina coladas and being stupefied at the prices I was reading. At the time, I had about 1,000 1952 Bowmans, including 4 Willie May (that was how he signed his 52B autograph) cards. Happy Turkey Day to all! ================= To: "Thanks \(OBC\)" Subject: appreciations Date: Wed, 21 Nov 2001 23:08:52 -0800 From: "Geordie Calvert" As always, I'm playing catch up. These thanks have been piling up for probably a month or so. A few of you may know that our family owns and operates a small chain of furniture stores (four stores) in Central California. As people flee the Bay Area, a great many of them end up in our neck of the woods, driving the housing market and as a result, lots of other markets too. Lots of these folks are investing in new furniture to go with their newhomes, so we're extremely busy. That's a good problem to have, but it leaves very little for anything beyond work & family. Anyway, on to the thanks. Mike Rich - a 35th birthday present in the form of '74 Topps Traded Kurt Bevacqua (finishing that set), a '76 Brooks Robinson (leaving only Yaz to finish it off!), a '77 Dave Kingman and Ryan Record Breaker (leaving 3 to go!)and '65 Embossed of Mr. Callison, Cepeda, Boyer and Kubek. Zowie, it's been a month since I looked at these, and I'm just as excited now!. Thanks Mike! Ed Schott - a six-pack, including five '74s, (Bumbry, Lolich, Ruthven, Tom Walker, Dave Sells) and a '73 A's team card. The Bumbry card is hilarious - he must be choking up at least 6 inches on the bat! Thanks Ed!! Matt Shirley - Matt hits me five times to the '74 "signature" checklist set- Braves, Astros, Red Sox, White Sox and Orioles. Along for the ride was a '67 of Eddie Watt. Thanks Matt!! John Harrell - a six-pack of birth-year '66s, including Swoboda, Ken McMullen (still need his RC - anyone got a spare '63 Rose??? ), Locker, Kreutzer, Narum and Chico Ruiz. Thanks 'Bama!! Lynn Miller - can't add much more to the nice things that have been said about Lynn. Truly a gentleman who has faced his share of adversity with grace. I'm proud to count Lynn as a friend. Along with his wonderful Christmas card was a "Birthyear, Dodger and a guy named (Bob) Miller!!!" A triple treat Lynn, thank you! You guys are amazing. Thanks for the healing power of cardboard, and the friendships that the cardboard has given me. If you have a chance, maybe take some time tomorrow and make a list of the things you're thankful for, and then read that list to someone close to you. God bless. ================= To: "Thanks \(OBC\)" Subject: appreciations continued Date: Wed, 21 Nov 2001 23:22:01 -0800 From: "Geordie Calvert" Sheesh - just found another package, this one stuffed to the limits. Robert Pigeon - a whopping 70 hits to the '74 list, including such luminaries as Bonds (whose son is indeed a punk that deserved the MVP this year), Cuellar, Gossage, McGraw, Alou, Killebrew, Chambliss, Blue, Russell, Bell - plus tons of other greats. Also a '72 SCP of Jim Holt and a handful of '73s including Marichal and Cash. Finally, Mike Rich sends along 4 Terry Hughes cards, three '75 Topps minis and a 1973 OPC rookie card. Mike, I'll get two of the minis autographed and back to you. The "Original Eek" (as if there's a copy) Earl Kilbourn sends a sharp SCP from 1958 and a pair of 1959s. With cards like that I don't care what you call me Earl. Robert, Rob, Bob, Bobby are all fine. Thanks Earl. Bill Malson also hits the 1958 set with a pair of Indians that he says were rescued from a scrapbook. Look great in the binder. Thanks Bill. Ed Schott takes a wide swing at almost all of my sets with SCP's from 1958 through 1969. Whitey Herzog is leading the charge and Bobby Knoop is bringing up the rear. Thanks Ed. Major Geno hits me with a couple of 1963s a SCP from 1966 and a high # black beauty. Along for the trip is an APBA card of Jorge Orta. If F next to his position is what I think it means now I know why I never heard of him. Thanks George Vrechek hits me with 4 fine cool grays he picked up in Chicago. The highlight being the Indians team card. Thanks George. Still more to come but I'll get to them soon. He always used to refer to the Chesapeake Bay area as the "Land of Pleasant Living." I don't know if that was just a commercial line or something from the Chamber of Commerce, but it does offer a nice lead in for today's thank you. Two very nice and unexpected cards floated in yesterday from the "Land of Pleasant Living." Ed Schott hit my wantlist with two guys who used to play for the Orioles back in those old days - a '60 version of Oriole backup (to the famous Gus Triandos) catcher Joe Ginsberg and a '63 Hal 'Skinny' Brown, who pitched for many A.L. teams, but mostlyfor the "Birds." Many apologies for quietly holing up over the past month or so. Besides the typical bit about being busy, I've been fairly shellshocked by the possibility of contraction of my beloved Twins. I'm beginning to understand at an emotional level what fans of the Bums and, yes, the Senators went through. I experienced it a little when the North Stars left Minnesota but it pales compared to the angst I'm feeling over the possible sheer disappearance of my team since boyhood. Besides the disgust I feel toward Selig and Pohlad for their mutual sleeziness, I'm finding it hard to abate my anger at all of the other owners who are willful participants in this ruse. Anyway, now that there is a glimmer of hope through the court system and the owners' mutual incompetence, I'm coming around again. The following trio of packages over the past few days have certainly helped! First, heartfelt thanks to Lynn Miller for a beautiful Christmas card and note. The '62 of Reds rookie Joe Gaines was icing on the cake. Thanks very, very much Lynn for the thoughtfulness and the card. The other two packages arrived in today's mail. An envelope from Bama made it all the way to my residence intact before the oaf of our mailman *crammed* it into our small mailbox, despite the multiple stamps and writing on the envelope stating "DO NOT BEND". Perhaps he thought that meant that he shouldn't bend his knees down our steps and leave the envelope outside our door. Anyway, fortunately (for him!) the cards were not damaged at near the same level as the envelope. The contents were a beautiful foursome of '69s, including Mike Epstein. Thanks so very much, 'Bama... love 'em all! The other package in our box was a puffy from longtime OBCer and friend Sal Domino. Sal's note states "Jim, This should put a dent in the 71's -- Sal." Well, pardon me, but 41 freakin' black beauties is a tad more than "a dent", Sal!!! THANK YOU!! On top of the '71s was a threesome of psycho-72s, all very needed and appreciated. Amazing... Well all, thanks for putting up with me and for being the best darned card group, period! Take care and keep my Twins in your prayers... ================= To: obc-thanks@yahoogroups.com Subject: incomings Date: Wed, 28 Nov 2001 06:37:48 From: "jeff sinclair" hey guys, two more packages in the mailbox today. first a 1978 scp nolan ryan from andy cook it what i assume was my infamous anthrax package which was mistakenly sent to my neighbor. i only need a couple of ryans to complete the run. thanks andy! second package was an 8 pack of 65 cards from jeff delott including the original himself, frank thomas in his phillies garb. thanks jeff thanks guys do you remember the feel of the candy store steps? Did I ever mention how much I love this set?! And my list is starting to get small (for me) so the pickings are starting to get slim and I greatly appreciate any help I can get on this one, so Thank You Mike!!!! Further proof (as if we needed any) that OBC is great: A couple of months ago, Lorin dangled a 1959 Norm Siebern on the waiver wire, where it remained for about 3 seconds until a fast fingered friend snapped him up. I was one of the slow fingered friends who missed out on this excellent card.... So, OF COURSE, as you would expect, what else is knew, it had to happen, OBC is just like this, 8 weeks later the very same (or one just like it) Norm Siebern arrives at my house. Life is good, to quote an unnamed genius... While we're on the subject of Norm Siebern, I should add that in my mind's eye, which is to say, in my childhood memory of baseball and baseball cards, Norm Siebern was and always will be a Red Sox player, despite the very pin-striped NY uniform he wears on this card. Of course, Norm played about 30 games for Boston in 1967, and about 20 games in 1968 before retiring, but who cares. I remember fondly that 1968 Topps card 537 with Siebern on the Red Sox, ready to swing, gripping the bat bare-handed, fierce look on his face not giving away a hint of his decision to hang it up before the baseball card was even printed... Set the shell in the back yard as a dog house for their 6 coon dogs, then used the ribs to make a fence around the yard.
