I apologize for not getting the thanks posted timely as wella s not getting return packages to those I owe as well. Packages will be forthcoming to those I owe. Andy Cook sent a great variety pack: a 1958 Bond Bread Buffalo Bisons (my first), a 1910 T212 Obak (another first for me), 3 194 1Playballs (I only had 6 and just added it to my oBC wantlist last month - at Andy's urging), a 1951 Berk Ross Jesse Owens (a personal favorite set that I only have a few of), 1909 American Carmel E91B #14 if I cataloged it correctly and 2 1909 E95 Philadelphia Caramels. Can you believe it. Andy I will have to dig to find appropriate response to such a package. Bob Donaldson made 2 appearances at the mailbox. First was a waiver claim for some UV retro hockey cards for my nephew. He loved them. Next were a couple of vintage hits to my 1953 Topps set. Making slow but steady progress on that set. Grant Rainsley was able to sneak some stuff over the border, including Red Wing Beer caps and Beer Can, a Red Wing flag, some 1985 OPC BB Posters that I already have a set of and extras to trade if anyone is paying attention and 15 of the last 39 1965 CFL Coke caps I need for the English version of the set. This is a tough set for those of us in the states of 230 caps. Almost down to the last 10% with Grant's help. Of course I got something from Ken, a 1953 Topps BB #149 DiMaggio (Dom), but still a nice hit. Erik Greenwood continued sending me some 1976 Shakeys. A really neat set that I wish I could find here in Michigan. The only ones I have I think came from Erik (I now have about 35 of the 160). Thanks Erik. Did I mention he included Ruth & Gehrig among this batch? Yesterday, I received a surprise pack of Bowmans from Jim Moleta. A 1948 #20, I now have 23 of 48, 1 from the 1/2 way mark. A 1949 for my weakest set. 2 1950s, which puts me at the 1/3 mark and reduces me down to 401 (plus variations) in Bowman BB. 349 in 1949 & 1950, the other 52 in 1948, 1951, 1953 & 1954. Walt was the guest speaker. Mark Z, Sean, and Howard sent enough cards so that I was able to pass out a card to each of the 7 players that did show up from our team (I was the assistant coach). They each were able to get his autograph. I even got one for myself and Howard. The coaches were invited to hang out at one of the other coaches house afterwards and I was fortunate enough to be able to spend about 1 hour and a half talking with Walt. I found out he is adamant about Pete Rose not deserving Hall of Fame status, that Ted Williams was a great teammate as well as a great hitter, that Sandy Koufax was the toughest pitcher he ever faced, and that Willie Mays edged out Mickey Mantle as the best overall player of all time. He also had some very kind words to say about his former teammates Dom DiMaggio, Nellie Fox and Al Kaline. I also talked to him about his football and basketball career at the University of Connecticut. He still owns one of the top scoring averages for the UConn basketball team. He is a very nice guy and I appreciate him taking the time to talk to me. I also have some OBC Thanks to pass out.... Andy Cook adds to my Red Back collection with Sid Gordon. Thanks Andy! Major Shirley surprises me with two very nice looking hits to the 1958 set. Gil Hodges and Larry Doby puts the other cards in the binder to shame. Thanks Matt! (I hope I haven't forgotten anyone already.) Upon my return from a short vacation in NY and PA, I sorted through the mail and came up with a couple nice packages: Former OBC'er extraordinaire Lynn Miller sent a birthday card and loaded it up with some MP&Co. cards. THANKS LYNN!! I have one from the 1943 edition (Dickey) and a few from 1949 (Kozar, Ennis, Pafko and Dark). Anyone interested in these? I sent away the only one I ever had (Reese) and have no great desire to start the set (or even a type set). PLMK if you need a specific card, one for a type set, or all of them to start a set. Mike Wierzbicki sent an envelope postmarked on my birthday, which included some gold borders for my set. These aren't the T205's on my list however, so you'll have to draw your own conclusions ;-) THANKS MIKE!! Next up, Greg Miller sends... oh, darn it - this is another one of those returned envelopes from my recent mass mailing. I'll have to forward it to his correct address. Sorry Greg. Peter Iversen sends me two cards, with only one of them - a super T205 coming from him. The other is a card I ended up sending to myself via California. I got an idea from this. If you guys can't find cards on my list, I'll buy them myself and mail them out to you all, so you can then mail them back to me. Peter re-completes my gray back variation for the 1956 set. I have already put the card in he binder so I won't accidentally mail it out again. THANKS PETER!! Finally, the package that puts the 'big' into the subject line of this e-mail. Mark Talbot shipped off a large package containing six pocket sheets - just enough to house my 1969-70 hoop set (which has been basically sitting in a pile until now). I don't remember telling Mark I needed the sheets, but I did. I'll have to wait to put the basketball cards into the pages however, because Mark filled a few of them with cards on my list! Four 1968 Topps, which cut that list to just three were on the first page. Two more basketball cards and a baker's dozen hockey cards (including some names I remember) round off the delivery. I must point out to everyone that my list says "ANY CONDITION accepted" on it... these cards put my set to shame, but I'll reluctantly put them in the binder. THANKS MARK!! I'm now in the waiting for a card from Kit Young that could effect my wantlist. My second set of 1967's is void of any high numbers, mainly because of a Seaver RC being so difficult to find affordably, even in poor condition. Well, the other day I was scanning his catalog and came across one listed at $48 in poor condition (plus there was a 25% discount on all cards on the page on top of that!) I didn't even ask for a description of the card when I called... maybe it's only half a card? If it is indeed mostly all there, I may be forced to put the rest of the 67 highs on my list. I'm sure most of you have stacks of these waiting to go out in the mail, so hold onto them just a bit longer :-) Thanks in advance for your help. Now there's a name you don't hear much of these days... The very busy and generous Peter made a contribution to the Red Sox quest with a '59 mike fornieles, helped the '56 set with a gem of an Eddie Miksis, and also sent along a card that I don't think appeared anywhere on my list but that I love very much: a 1954 Jim Greengrass. Could there be a better name for an outfielder than that? This Eddie Miksis card is very carefully inscribed with the words "Donna Lynn", a mixture of upper and lower case and backwards letters that I'm guessing was the work of a 1st grader (takes the father of one to know one). Possibly this is the name of one of the card's prior owners, but I think it's more likely that this was Peter or his older brother practicing the name of the lovely little Donna Lynn, whom neither boy could get out of his mind. Or even better, this was Peter writing the name of the loathsome Donna Lynn, the one so disliked by his older brother that he (Peter) made sure to write her name on all of his brother's prized baseball cards. Yeah, I can see it will be worth getting to the bottom of this little mystery... Okay, thanks Peter, for thinking of me again. - Rick ================= Date: Fri, 5 Oct 2001 22:47:24 -0400 (EDT) To: OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com Subject: Pre-War Thanks From: Neal Thomas Hi all- Andy Cook surprises me today with an addition to my W516-1 set. From: Mark S Talbot Hello all, The cardboard continues to fly in here to Southeastern Michigan. Today 2 more arrived at the door and once again I am overwhelmed. No sooner do I get a few packages out more come in and of course the cycle continues to perpetuate itself. The two I would like to thank today are Peter Iversen and Brock Hattox. Peter sends a few out my way with a note that apologizes for sending "so few", but we all know that if you put together all the stuff the Peter has been sending out lately it turns out to be quite a stack of stuff. Here are the few that Peter sent my way. A T-218 of boxer Jem Driscol, a `61 Fleer Football card of Bob Toneff, a `63 Topps Football card of Jim Paxton, a `65 Philly card of Bob DeMarco, a `77 Kellogg's of Steve Garvey and (2) `82 OPC mini posters of Expos Gary Carter and Terry Francona (Just what I needed another "oddball set" to collect). All of these are appreciated Peter and you will just have to keep an eye out for my retaliatory nature. Brock buries me again. We finally leveled the playing field a month or so ago and agreed that I would send him the "next strike" to the want lists. I had not picked up anything recently that Brock could use (does anybody else have this problem) so I had not sent him anything yet. Nonetheless I responded to a recent waiver put out by Brock for a single `77 Hostess card of Keith Hernandez. Of course Brock was quick to oblige this request but he simply had to send more - he states "to justify the cost of the stamp". Well along for the ride were (6) `54 Bowman's with names like Dittmer, Murray, Bollweg, Katt, Thomson and Landrith. That would have been company enough, Brock however had other ideas because he sent more - a `56 Jim Gilliam, a `58 Billy Loes upgrade, a couple of `60 Leaf cards Luis Aparico (#1) and Sam Taylor a HI number and finally a `63 Post Cereal card of Milt Papas. Once again I am indebted to Brock and once again I will have to go on the hunt to "level the playing field" again. Brock's list is still the only one I ever bring to the card shows, I don't even bring my own Well Thank You gentlemen for making the cold day here in Southeastern Michigan just a bit nicer. Combine that with the Wayne State Warriors (formerly Tartars) win over Northern Michigan University and we have a pretty good day going. I'll be talking again - but for now I'll just say - BE WELL!!! Sometimes it seems that way. As some remember, I moved to Columbus about 18 months ago for a new job, which soon after arriving became a nightmare. I've tried ever since to get back to Tennessee, but so far nothing has opened up to allow that to happen. So Cheryl (the Dutch Daulton fanatic) is still there with her Dad who isn't doing well. In the last year or so I developed back pain- first time in my life I ever had anything like that. AFter it got bad enough I finally gave in and had surgery which showed a ruptured disc and another one which isn't good. The surgery happened August 22nd and really helped. Of course, everyone knows what happened one month ago, and I'm in the Navy Reserve so that has really increased the work load after the normal everyday workload. Needless to say, I haven't had much time for baseball cards. I miss it and the comaraderie with you guys but it hasn't been much of an option. In the meantime many of you have still cared enought to send cards and I haven't even thanked you, although they are in a stack right here to do so. So before I do that, I wanted to say thanks for not kicking me out of the group. I hope someday that things will even back out and I'll get re-involved. I'm the quiet one in the group... well, in person anyway. Get that wantlist posted soon. You'll never look at the mail the same way again. ;-) Here's a sampling of why I say that: The week for me was capped off with a pair of puffies delivered to my door. The first is from John McLaughlin, who surprises me with four hits to my 69-70 basketball set. This reduces my list to a top ten most wanted. THANKS JOHN!! I must admit the second puffy had me a little bewildered when I read the return address. The name is one I was very familiar with, but never one I figured to get cards from out of the blue. The label on the puffy was from OBC friendly dealer Roger Neufeldt at "Sport Memories" in Oklahoma. I hadn't made a deal with Roger since The National, so a package from him was a big surprise... and one that had my mind racing as I tore open the puffy - this could be anything. The mystery was solved after reading the note from Roger: the card was from him, but it was to make up for a trade he made with Brock Hattox. It was a rather nice looking T205 John Lobert. John held the world record for circling the bases at 13 4/5 seconds according to the back of the card. THANKS BROCK and ROGER!! According to unofficial estimates (and after consulting the latest OBC directory), I think I messed up about 10 addresses in my mass mailing. I used a copy of the directory that was... obviously outdated to put it mildly. A few of you who have moved recently (or not so recently as the case may be) might want to stop by your old house to pick up your cards. Hopefully some of them were forwarded or returned to me to try again. Oh well, TAYL, Ken M ================= Date: Fri, 12 Oct 2001 20:16:18 EDT Subject: The Corps Thanks Central Pennsylvania! Additionally I was pleased to see that I was down to 401 Bowman BB and 303 Topps BB (not counting variations)to complete 1951-1992. I am now down to 11 cards in the set. A 1948/9 Leaf BB was also included (I only have 9 cards, so this set is in its embryonic stages). Then he sends some 1953 Topps knocking off 2 more there. But wait, there is still more. With multiple cards tucked into flex holders he nails the 1952 Topps set with 18 more, including Berra, Simmons & in true OBC style Joe Tipton. From their home around the Bay area these delicate beauties, paper thin, yet capable of flying quite a long distance in a week or less, have been spreading out all across the country, unable to agree on a common winter roost. This makes it all the better for us, as so many have been sighted all over. One landed right in my mailbox today and luckily it had been carefully tagged by a good citizen so it's journey could be tracked. A Mr. Ed Pike of Congo Street put his identifying marks on this one before setting it loose, and it arrived about noon today! We spent quite a nice evening, my little boy and me, examining this "Souvenir Pullout Section", also known as the "Bonds Collection", and it's the first one either of us has ever seen. We love it and consider ourselves quite fortunate to have been honored by its Thanks Ed for spreading the joy! - Rick ================= Date: Thu, 18 Oct 2001 23:28:22 -0400 Subject: RE: [OBC-Thanks] Pike's at the Beach To: "INTERNET:abaran@perriergroup.com" From: brock hattox I got my PikePaper, too. Also I would like to thank a couple people, and maybe just wright a little non-sense, so I'll forgo the usuall This Week in Baseball Cards format and say thanks to Geno for a nice "SCP" a very nice 1965 Topps Detroit Tiger Team Card. Of course, anyone who knows Geno knows that there is no such thing as a SCP from Geno. He also included the usuall APBA card, this one being one of my favorite Tiger catachers, William Ashley Freehan. Thanks Geno. I was also the proud recipient of Ed Pike's mass mailing of the souvenir pullout section of the San Francisco Chronicle's "the Bonds Collection". Thanks Ed. Now for the non-sense: Why do they call them practical jokes? Shouldn't they be "Impractical jokes"? And another thing... we've all heard the expression: "He was in the wrong place at the wrong time". It seems to me that if you were in the wrong place at the wrong time, there wouldn't be much to worry about. If you were "in the wrong place at the right time" you'd have a problem. Andy, however, has been working on my invisible type set wantlist (what Andy does not know is that I do want to have a type set collection). Andy sent 2 more "firsts" for me: a 1933 World Wide Gun/Canadian Goudey V353 Sewell. I was surprised that Sewell was listed as a common, I always thought of him as a minor star. This goes very nicely with the only 1934 Canadian Goudey I have, that Andy sent me a while back. The other "first" was a 1928 Zeenut PCL #4. Not just my first 1928, but my first Zeenut card. Aside from the "firsts" Andy sent a few hits to the wantlists including 1941 Playball 40 & #8 Ott (or at least most of the card, but hey he is a HOFer), another 1951 Topps Blue Back (the second from Andy in a week and a 1971 Kellogg's Frank Howard. For some reason I had the tough variationa nd needed the common, which Andy nailed. Andy topped the package off by sending me one of my favorite collectibles a Coke BB cap. I am always on the prowl for these, and have a multipage types list (not available online yet) of Coke caps I am looking for. Coke BB, FB & HCKY caps are always extremely welcome. Andy another great package. Mike Rich ================= Date: Fri, 26 Oct 2001 21:04:03 EDT Subject: The Corps Thanks Mr. Reed! To: OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com From: MatShirley@aol.com Hello OBC! Thanks out today to Bob Reed for a truly sentimental assortment of great cardboard. Seven 59's highlighted by Frank Lary and Billy Pierce, followed up by 64's of Frank Lary again and Cookie Rojas, and finished with a 65 of Cookie Rojas again! Wonderful! The old Yankee Killer Frank Lary, where is he when we need him? Just so happens that he was a childhood pal of my own dear old Dad. They played ball together as youngsters growing up in Northport, AL. If Tuscaloosa was big enough to rate suburbs, Northport would be one. Thanks for the great cards God Bless America! Too drained to examine it, I laid it aside til just a few minutes ago. Ben Wade. Cool. Turn the card over and just about fell over. See, I haven't messed with the '52 Topps much, so I don't know the placementof the Dodger players in the set, with the exceptions of Campy, Jackie andPee Wee. I knew for sure those were high numbers. A great idea Wayne, and thanks a ton for sending a copy my way!!! GEORGE sends 6 hits to the 1956 Topps list, highlighted by Roger Craig, Dusty Rhodes and Wally Moon! George also includes a note urging me NOT to root against the Yankees. I'm not even going to mention the current status of the Series, as I remember feeling like this in '96 when my beloved Braves went up 2-0 against the Yanks in NY, only to lose the next four in a row!
