What? No cardboard, no cards mentioned in this Ramble? How dare he, you might Well........I'm stretching it a bit here but it's for a good cause -- I'm so happy for my wife. She and her writing partner have labored for two years to produce a non-fiction book on the Inverted Jenny, the famous bi-plane stamp that was printedupside down as an error stamp in a sheet of 100. When they come up for auction now, (rarely), they can command prices close to half a million or better. Friend of mine had two of them. He passed away recently and his Jennys will be in an auction this June. Will keep anyone posted who is interested in stamps. The book is a collection of information about famous and not-famous people who have owned the stamps since 1918, some solid early US aviation history, and some history about the beginning of US airmail service -- also in the year Book is titled: "Stamp of the Century". If interested in the book, contact me via my personal e-mail and I will give you a link to their blog and other pertinent info. Anyone who is married now or in the past, can appreciate how important it is to support your spouse in their endeavors. Towards that lofty goal, I fly to Washington D.C. tomorrow to spend a week with my wife, her writing partner and her husband, to "promote" the book launch, this Tuesday at the Smithsonian Postal Museum. I am the trophy husband. I do not believe I will be able to hook up with any OBCers because I will be visiting museums, restaurants, and coffee bars all over the nation's capitol. If my wife wants to show me a good time and parade me around, well, I'm not going to screw THAT up... Tuesday, May 1st, from 12 Noon to 2 PM, I will be in the lobby of the Smithsonian Postal Museum, smiling and telling everyone how wonderful Kellen is....you can ask Grant. He'll vouch for me. A quick eBay search showed a few late 70's sheets in the $250-350 range. There were five 132-card sheets for the 1975 set. Not sure if they were printed 1-132, 133-264 etc., but I remember seeing older price guides that had the lower numbers as slightly more scarce than the rest of the set. Also, it would depend on who was on the sheet (Ryan, Brett/Yount RC's, MVP's, etc.) to detemine a value. Having said that, the older sheets are not commonly found. Sheets from the 60's and early 70's that were issued in series would obviously be worth a lot more, especially for a high number sheet. I think the $400 price may be a bit high (unless it had the Brett/Yount and MVP's), but there may have been some wiggle room on it. I've never been in the market for uncut sheets and haven't priced them out, so you can take this as Believable Stories from the "Industry Expert". ☺ Ken M Sent from my not so smart phone. ------ Original message------From: Bob Donaldson obcbobd@gmail.com [OBC-Ramblings] Date: Tue, May 1, 2018 3:32 PMTo: OBC Ramblings;Cc: Subject:[OBC-Ramblings] 1975 Topps BB uncut sheet I was at the Shriner's show and one of the dealers I know had an uncut sheet of 1975 Topps Baseball.  I would guess 12 x 11 = 132 cards.  Didn't take too close a look at it, but it was in nice shape.  He wanted $400 Later on it got me thinking.  "That would be nice on the wall".  My question is; anyone have an idea the worth of something like this?  What if were a bit earlier (68-74)? ================= Date: Tue, 01 May 2018 22:17:58 +0000 To: OBC Ramblings Subject: Fwd: 39th National eNews-Topps VIP Party Signers Named From: Joel Freedman ---------- Forwarded message --------- From: National Sports Collectors Convention Date: Tue, May 1, 2018 at 1:31 PM Subject: 39th National eNews-Topps VIP Party Signers Named To: Joel Freedman View as a Web page . TIANT, HARGROVE AND MURPHY TO SIGN It's been a long-standing tradition to kick off the National Sports Collectors Convention on Wednesday with an exclusive party for all attendees who have purchased a VIP Admission Package. The VIP Party, held on August 1, 2018 from 2:30-4:00PM, is sponsored by The Topps Company. Each year at the VIP Party, there are several free signers for Party attendees. These are in addition to the 18 VIP signers appearing during the week of the National. This year we are pleased to announce three very special signers at this event. Former Cleveland Indians Manager Mike Hargrove will be on hand. Hargrove was the AL Rookie of the Year for the Texas Rangers in 1974. An All Star in 1975, Mike joined the Indians in 1979 and played for the team until he retired in 1985. Nicknamed "The Human Rain Delay", he was famous for his lengthy routine between pitches which drove pitchers crazy. Hargrove was named Indians Manager in 1991 and led the team to 5 consecutive AL Central Titles and 2 World Series appearances. He is a member of the Cleveland Indians Hall of Fame. Calvin Murphy is an NBA and College Basketball Hall of Famer. At only 5'9" he is the shortest member of the NBA Hall of Fame. A 3-time college All America at Niagara University, he was drafted by the Rockets and made the NBA All Rookie Team. Murphy was one of the best free throw shooters in NBA history setting the single season record (since broken) with a 95.8% mark. His 78 consecutive free throws is 3rd best all time, He was also the Rockets all time leading scorer until his record was surpassed by Hakeem Olajuwon. Murphy's #23 jersey has been retired by the Rockets. Luis Tiant - "El Tiante" began his career with the Indians in 1964. He compiled a 229-172 record in his 19 year MLB Career, twice leading the AL in ERA and being named to the All Star Team 3 times. Tiant attained most of his success after altering his delivery by turning to face 2nd base before delivering to the plate. In 1968, he threw 9 shutouts and led the AL with a 1.60 ERA. He pitched for the Red Sox in the 1975 World Series winning 2 games and throwing 173 pitches in the famous Carlton Fisk Walk-Off Homer game. Tiant is a member of the Boston Redsox Hall of Fame. The 3 players will sign from 3-4PM at the VIP Party. The 39th National will be held August 1-5, 2018 at the IX Center in Cleveland, OH. From: Peter Iversen Just wanted to let you all know that the book that I started working on in 1997 is online - and today I just received my 5 sample copies... It doesn't seem real...but I have a book in my hands and I can believe... Thank you again OBC for my inspiration... Thought you all might like to get a preview of the acknowledgements in the back of the book... I really love you guys! Marc Peter Reyna aka Peter Iversen aka marcpeter53@gmail.com... Marc Peter and James would first of all like to thank all of the baseball players from 1934 and beyond for letting us use our own, particular version of their lives, careers and memories in support of this story, without which *Diamond Stars* would not exist. They continue to inspire. We would also like to thank Denice Stradling and Steve Christensen for lending their talent and expertise in the creation of this book. The first reader of a story is always the most important. Their input, criticism and talent not only gave us the courage to go forward, but helped us realize we were on the right track of telling the story we wanted to tell. We were fortunate to have them. Marc Peter and James would like to thank Marc Peter=E2=99s community of baseball card collectors, whose historical link to the history and legacy of baseball continues. Much of *Diamond Stars* is connected to the collection of=E2=94and reverence for=E2=94these cardboard replicas and players of games gone by. They are a pictorial history of the game of baseball, passed through to generations and onward. A link and continuum to our National Pastime. Marc Peter and James would also like to acknowledge our wives, Denice and Doree, for allowing us to obsess about this book, even though they wouldn't know about who Van Lingle Mungo actually was. Finally, this is for fans of baseball and love stories. They are not mutually exclusive. We hope you agree. My favorite sports teams are all in Pittsburgh, where there is no NBA team. I don't watch much NBA anymore but as a teenager in the 1980s I was a big fan of Dominique Wilkins, courtesy of WTBS. I also liked following the Magic/Byrd years (I was more of a Laker supporter in those battles) and I enjoyed watching Jordan. And one of my favorite activities is playing pickup basketball. I interviewed Larry for an SCD article in 2004. He generously shared with me and readers several interesting finds as to variations and printing differences in early Topps and Bowman sets. He was up on the 1952 Topps graybacks years before they became hot. If I have a question, I check with Larry. Larry has made it to Chicago for some of the bigger shows. In his spare time, I found that he is the "Rachel E. Doug provided a baker's dozen non-sports cards, which he happened to have lying around, and of which I actually needed most. He also has this trick of pulling some cards, getting a price from the dealer, then pulling more cards to add onto the stack and getting an even lower price. It's magical! LOL Cade didn't handshake me his '53 Jackie Robinson *wink*, but he was able tomake a great trade for a card from Kurt. And since that ras-cule didn't let me know he was coming, I didn't have anything for him so I guess some stamps will be involved. Didn't buy too much but as usual, it was great hanging out, talking, and digging through cards. I did pick up what I thought was (counted 32 cards), and what did turn out to be, a complete blue tint set of 1980 Exhibit HOF cards for $5. Got a Joe D Salutation Exhibit for $20 and a '34 Gold Meadow Paul Dean for $5. Found a '59 Home Run Derby Rocky Colavito that I didn't have for a buck (oh wait, it's the reprint) and picked up a pair of T205 blackink American Beauty backs for $35. Got a few other non-card odds and ends but nothing major to write home or here about. Still and as usual, a fun time. ================= To: OBC Ramblings , "Thomas W. My earliest memory was from probably 1967 in Tennessee or Kentucky. We lived in Fort Cambell and that borders two states. My understanding was we lived in Tennessee but my sister was born in Kentucky at the hospital at the end of our street. I recall some kids (friends of my aunt) riding their skateboard off of our roof. Remember these had steel wheels then. Going back to sports, I remember my grandfather teaching me to bunt when I was five years old. He also bought me a football for my birthday. I really wasn't much into sports at that age. When I turned 7, I moved back to Staten Island while my father was stationed in Saudi Arabia. We played baseball every day and football in the winter. From then, I was hooked. When we moved to El Paso towards the fall of 1973, I started playing basketball and it came naturally to me. Further through the years, I lived upstate NY and then my family settled in Florida. I graduated in 1986 from FSU with an Art Degree (That means I partied a lot). Eventually my career took me to Alabama where I live now. My first game I ever went to was at Shea Stadium in early 1973 and I was fortunate enough to see Willie Mays play. Forward to today, I'm 53 years old, I've been married 12 years to Liz. It is my second marriage. Neither produced any children. To compensate, I coachbaseball and basketball. I have horrible knees, am overweight but am somewhat active. My wife and I ride bicycles most weekends, although not too hardcore. I shoot hoops a little around basketball season and I still play softball. I can't run at all, but can field throw and hit still of which I am proud. I probably max out at warning track power, but that is even rare. Liz is a belly dancer. She knows little about sports but has learned a little from watching my teams play. She has performed and taught belly dancing around the world. Her passion for it mirrors my passion for sports so we match up pretty well. Both Liz and I work for the same company and we try to eat lunch together each day or take a walk break. On top of Sports, I'm also a music nut. I've written quite a few songs and have played all the parts. I am a poor musician as my fingers don't move too fast. But, I might bring a guitar to the National since there seems to bea few musicians. I've met the Alabama contingent of OBC as well as Joe Denning who is an honorary member of that contingency since his wife is from here. I've also metBob D'Angelo since he lives about 20 minutes from my father in Florida. I rarely get to shows as there are none locally. Oh, I'm also a little OCD, but I think that is required to be a set collector. If you've lost/forgotten your password (it's important; you'll need to use that just to view the mailing addresses list), use this procedure: OBC main home page --> click "Directory" link in left-side menu --> click "Update your address or collecting goals" link in main content section --> click "Email Current OBC Password" link in main content section --> (select your name from the dropdown list) --> hit the "Email Password" button. All member addresses and personal biography information are password-protected, and stored in our database to avoid "web-crawlers" looking for personal info. Any questions at all about anything website-related, just drop me a note and I'll get back to you as quickly as possible. ================= Date: 18 May 2018 14:16:34 +0000 To: Subject: 47-66 Exhibits! From: Anson Whaley Hey Spike - I've never heard of widespread fakes with the Tunneys as you do with the Ruths. I have a graded Ruth and would still be hesitant on buying an unauthenticated one (as you probably know, Beckett is the only one of the Big 3 grading them these days). But I'd feel much safer taking a shot at a Tunney - especially one from an established seller. That said, there's one seller on eBay now that has one with water damage. His have a brownish back and I've never seen authentic ones with that type. Those look questionable to me. I know some of the fake Ruths have a grayish back printed on stock that is a little rougher than the smooth authentic ones. But nothing about the others listed, including the one you posted, screams fake to me. This version ties the sets together much more convincingly and fills in a lot of missing pieces from the earlier work. If you had a copy of the prior version, you should throw it away and replace it with this. And if any of you have any cards that would add to this article, PLEASE share I'm always looking to improve this and it still has a ways to go before it's Ps - Given the progress I have made on this "set", if anyone is interested in starting on it themselves ... I have many doubles from W572 baseball, W580 boxing, and movie star's sets that I'm now vaguely considering getting rid of. If you're inclined to tackle this challenge (and this article represents 20 years of collecting these sets!) I could probably create a good starter set (or two). ================= Date: Fri, 25 May 2018 18:33:17 -0400 To: "Prickett, Patrick" Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] Updated 1923 W572 Article [1 Attachment] From: Andy Huntoon Hi Patrick, Congrats on the progress you've made on this set the last year or so.
