I arrived 15 minutes before opening, and go right to Fred and Marilyns table. They point me to the stuff they have added this month and I make these purchases: 1968 Milton Bradley =E2=9CHot Rod=E2=9D #8 the Tangerine (we talked about these cards a couple weeks ago) 1933 Goudey Indian Gum #33 Pocahontas 1952 Topps Look =E2=99N See #97 Jules Verne 1913 T221 Champion Women Swimmers (Pan Handle Scrap) #30 =E2=9COdiva" Two 1965 Topps football =E2=9Ctall-boys=E2=9D #70 #75 both SPs in thedollar Minor purchases, but I run into my friend Patrick. Patrick brought his non sports doubles for sale. Later we are going to go through these in the parking lot. I also have an extra 1964 Topps Combat (Series 2) wax wrapper for him. Then I start to make the rounds, all the normal guys are there which means I=E2=99ve seen all their stuff. I say hi to my dealer friend Mike who isstill setting up and he tells me he brought a special box that I might want to look at. Mike is a great guy and knows his stuff, but I rarely buy stuff from him because his stuff in in mostly nicer condition and priced accordingly. In this special box he has some blank backed 1949 baseball cards which he says are legit. I break out my magnifying glass (I left my loupe in the car!!!!) and the cards look and feel real. I did a quick google search, and find a story that SGC had recently slabbed some 1949 Bowman blank backcards that were going off to auction. Mike gave me a =E2=9Cmoney-back=E2=9D guarantee that they are real, and I bought them for $5 each. There are twelve cards total, all but two have names on the front, so I have determined which cards I have these numbers 75 91 146 149 159 166 167 169 178199 200 212 all commons. Under the loupe they look legit. Looking for feedback on these cards, I may submit to SGC. Mike also had a needed 1935 Goudey card I needed Mahaffey/Foxx/Williams/Higgins 2B common back $20 and a 1964 Topps rub off Rocky Colavito which I needed for my set. I=E2=99m still in this =E2=9CSpecial Box=E2=9D Mike has, and I buy1952 Wheaties Ralph Kiner (Pirates) portrait and action cards I don=E2=99t collect this set (yet) these were $4 or $5 each I forget. 1977 cloth Johnny Bench for $3 another set I don=E2=99t really collect. Then I purchase another stack of cards that I don=E2=99t collect 1961 Golden Press (Gehrig $5) (Dimaggio $5) (Dimaggio $5) (Dimaggio $5) (Greenburg $3) (DizzyDean $3) (Cy Young $3) (Cobb $5) (Ruth $10) (Ruth $10). I grab Patrick, and we head outside to his mini van to work out our deal. The card show takes place in kind of a =E2=9Cseedy=E2=9D hotel, and here, outside, are a couple guys that are exchanging cash it looks like a drug deal I=E2=99m sure:) I purchase quite a few cards from Patricks doubles box including seven 1973 Donruss =E2=9COsmonds=E2=9D cards which FINALLY finishes the set! Thirty hits 1969 Topps =E2=9CMan on the Moon=E2=9D (reissue # of #), single 1973 You=E2=99ll Die Laughing finishes my set due to a gremlin! One hit Casey/Kildare from 1964, two "McHales Navy"hits, single "Happy Days" hit (the red cards), two hits 1977 Topps =E2=9CAutos of 1977=E2=9D foil stickers finishes my second set! 1972 Donruss "Choppers and Hot Bikes=E2=9D 38 big hits! 1966 Topps "Rat Patrol=E2=9D 17 BIG hits I think I need just one more card! Two hits 1964 Topps =E2=9CCombat=E2=9D, finally 7 hits 1966 Donruss =E2=9CGreen Hornet=E2=9D! It=E2=99s like 95 degrees outside I=E2=99m ready to get back Picked up a 1962 Topps baseball #595 =E2=9CRookie Parade=E2=9D for $5plus dealer friend gave me a dollar back:) I also bought a 1968 Topps =E2=9CLaugh-In=E2=9D card #1 for $3 I already have this card but for some reason if I see a #1 card (or the last card) in the set I=E2=99ll pickit Last purchase I see a box marked 1960s Topps football and I looked through the 1967 =E2=9CTopps=E2=9D cards looking for remnants of 1968 =E2=9CTopps=E2=9D baseball cards on the top or bottom remember our Milton Bradley discussion? LOL I can=E2=99t tell from the back color but I see remnants of 1968 burlap baseball cards on a dozen cards and buy them for .50c each. When I got home I confirmed all 12 of these cards are listed as possible Milton Bradley:) What a great show! This week, my wife Gina and I learned that she has bone marrow cancer. It was detected early but is an aggressive form that requires immediate treatment. Treatment is not available in Huntsvile, AL so we will go 90 minutes to Nashville for a consultation and more testingin preparation for a transplant. She'll be in Nashville for 3-4 months wethink. As her caregiver, I don't know yet how long I will be there and what I will do. Our friends and family are asking how they can support us. One way will be to tested for bone marrow compatibility. Bethematch.org has details. Another method is for people to donate to a registered charity with the funds earmarked for our out of pocket expenses. My wife has good insurance but wedon't know what kind of out of pocket expenses we are looking at. Card wise I may end up with more time available or less. We just don't know. My wife kind of collects cards. She says she likes a set and I build it. We have Geno to thank for a British tobacco set featuring Charles Dickens. I finished her Gomer Pyle set. This week, my wife Gina and I learned that she has bone marrow cancer. It was detected early but is an aggressive form that requires immediate treatment. Treatment is not available in Huntsvile, AL so we will go 90 minutes to Nashville for a consultation and more testing in preparation for a transplant. She'll be in Nashville for 3-4 months we think. My wife has good insurance but we don't know what kind of out of pocket expenses we are looking at. Card wise I may end up with more time available or less. We just don't know. Had a great time. There was a time, around the 6th inning, where my voice was getting hoarse from all of the talking. Montgomery has a nice stadium with tons of character. And the Biscuits played a strong fundamental game, which was refreshing. My 10:30 normal bedtime easily turned into 1am as we talked and perused John's impressive collection, set after set of 1930s and earlier cards. I was overwhelmed. I should add that I was impressed upon walking into John's house immediately at the folk art collection John and his wife have. Primarily because my wife and I also have a similar collection. It was as if I was walking into an alternate universe. John had a handshake of a 1934 Goudey and two '67s including Stargell. We got into some exchanging and John was knocking hole after hole in my nottoo strong type card collection as well as other notable cards. Amongst the type set starters were a 1969 Nabisco Team Flakes Lou Brock, three '33 Indian Gum Indians, a '36 World Wide Gum Phil Cavaretta, and One of the threebasketball players from the 1933 Sport Kings Gum set. Amongst the other notables was a 1939-1946 Salutations Exhibits Ted Williams (Wow!), seven cards from the 1936 National Chicle set including Lefty Grove and a Foxx/Cochrane/Simmons trio. This set is now listed on my wantlist by numbers. John also throws in a grunge era food set for good measure. I felt totally welcome and comfortable at John's house and owe many thanks to John and his lovely wife Emmy. I might add that John's man cave is impressive. His antique bat collection is extensive and museum worthy. Not so much that it merely belongs in a museum, but that it can have its own museum. From: Jimi Thayer Hey guys, My best buddy since we were little, Bryan Long, whom several of you have met, started an online sports card business called Remember When Sports Cardslate last year. At first, he was dealing with mostly unopened newer material, and my being his friend, helped him a bit with Ebay sales, etc. Helping him a little in the beginning resulted in me doing the majority of the work, which also meant shifting to vintage, since that's where my strengths lie. All of this harmless, and not really worth telling OBC. In fact, a couple members have already known about it for a few months. However, just a couple of weeks ago, Bryan's budget doubled and he offered me partnership in the business. As some of you may know, I do not have a full time job anywhere, although I landscape and do other odds and ends for pay while being a stay-at-home dad. :) So, I now have a source of income (although likely not a lot), and an opportunity to work in the hobby. I'm very excited about this new opportunity in my life, and what better way, then to do it with cardboard! :) I am a collector at heart, and always will be, and I will continue to collect, but I'm not sure how this will effect the group. When I joined the group, being a dealer was far from my mind, although John Dahms and Wes Shepard at one point predicted this would happen. Jokes on me, I guess...LOL. My desire is to continue being an active member of the group though, so I atleast want to make this clear. So with that in mind, because some guys may not like this idea, I've thought of a few things that might help ease some people's minds, and realize that I will still never sell RAOKs: 1) I've already taken down my huge want list for vintage baseball cards andreplaced it with a desire to collect only T205s. A few reasons for this.....a) Being a full time dealer will likely cause me to have little time to be a collector, therefore, working on one set only, at least for the time being, will help keep me focused and not take up too much time; b) I am likely NOT going to be getting any RAOKs from people for this set. If I do, I'll send something out via RAOK as well. That simple. Nothing changes; andfinally c) It's a doable set. I was thinking of continuing my HOF Collection, but it really has no end in site, and the amount of money required is 7 figures....easy. Not happenin'! *****Originally I sent this to the ACs of OBC, but I'm already thinking of a couple other projects I'm going to add besides the T205s, but haven't nailed anything down yet. ****** 2) I will remove myself from selling anything on the OBC Dealer Scum server. I believe that server should be for OBC NON-dealers and I don't want people upset if I use it. 3) In the future, I'd like to be considered a possibility as a certified OBC Dealer. I'm not sure where this puts me though. How can I be an active OBC member and an active Certified OBC Dealer at the same time?....is likely the question. I don't know. LOL But I'd like to be! This is partly whyI've trimmed my want list down, so that way you can see there's no funny business going on. I hope my tenure thus far has been proof enough that I'mnot out to be sneaky. 4) For now, I've still kept my non-sports and other sports' lists up as I'mplanning on selling only baseball cards right now, although we do take consignments, so other items may show up. 5) The plan for our business is to be a jack-of-all trades, if you will, but start out with a wide variety of baseball items....with venturing out to other things in time. If you can picture Jack Kerkes and JD Heckathorne's tables, and creating a bit of a hybrid mix of those two, and then add in unopened material as we have an account through a distributor. Our tables, at first will likely be 1950s-70s bulk, but will span from prewar to 2015, both raw and graded material. So....what now? I love this group, dearly, and hope that you will continueto view me as a good collector/friend/dealer. Feel free to call or text me at 740-507-5671, too, if you wish. Take care, guys! Well, if anyone wanted to dabble in them, here is a true Tipton mint lot of Series 4 cards, all trimmed without the border. This is about the 3rd time this lot has shown up--started at a much higher price, but now all 7 cards can be yours for the low price of $0.99 plus postage--that's right, 7 Wheaties from the 1930's for a buck. http://www.ebay.com/itm/VINTAGE-Lot-of-7-1936-WHEATIES-BASEBALL-SERIES-4-BOX-PANELS-/321860181441?hash=item4af05c9dc1 I hate to say it, as I am very non-condition conscious, but they would even make the ones I have look pristine. I'd still do it, except I only need the Grove card--and looking at the picture, I'm not sure it would make the trip in one piece. ================= Date: Sat, 12 Sep 2015 13:15:18 -0400 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com Subject: Afternoon with no responsibilities From: Andy This is how I'm spending my afternoon. From: "Grant Rainsley" I lost my Hero this morning gang.........my Dad passed at the age of 96. This is NOT a plea for sympathy, I don't need any, Dad had a great run. If you don't mind taking a moment out of your day, I'd like to tell you a little bit about him, and then I'm going to ask you to do something..........it won't hurt, I promise. Dad was born in a pub run by his own Dad just outside of Southampton, England, in 1919. He and his Sister terrorized patrons of the pub by dumping water on their heads from an upstairs window. She passed just a couple of months ago. Always in trouble, those two. He headed off to WWII as a member of the Royal Air Force, coming home as a Sergeant, and played on the RAF Soccer Team. He met Mom during the war in Dayton, Ohio when he was there as a Liaison Officer......she had been working as a code breaker on the Enigma project. They got hitched, and they headed to Vancouver after the war, where there was a University and any kids they had could have a decent future. Dad worked several careers, but his primary was being a great Dad.....teaching me to ride a bike, playing catch, tossing a football, and making sure I developed a love of sports myself, and was very involved in teaching me how to get out of grief if I got in it in the first place. Which I often did. I know I caused him quite a bit of his gray hair. In later years, he had a rough road....bladder cancer (gutted like a fish), a broken hip at 86, taking care of Mom and her Alzheimer's for a lot longer than anyone should expect. One of the many qualities I admired most about Dad was that he was ALWAYS thinking about other people......things like "how can I help".........or "if I do this, how does it affect someone else?" He just cared...... So what is Grant going to ask you to do you might be wondering right about now.........here it is: How about picking out someone in the group who you haven't sent cards to for a long time, or even ever, and hit them with a card or two out of the blue.........and I don't mean me, I am out. He is four years older and we are nothing alike as far as the way we think and how we approach things. For these reasons I haven't really tried to stay real close to him in our adult lives. He has moved all over the country the last ten years so it's made it even easier to not be involved. He is not a bad person I am just selective in who I consider a friend or willing to give my time to even family members. He had stuff in Alaska and had it shipped down to Washington and asked me to drive with him to Kansas. I said no ten times before I finally said ok. Spent a week there after we got there. We had a good time together and hopefully I have soften up a little on excepting people for who/how they are. He got into cards as a kid then like a lot people in the junk era but haven't done anything with cards since. He knows I have always collected cards and has ask for several years for me to make a birth year set for him but I never thought much of it. As we get older we all realize that family is very important and they are with us in the beginning and usually they are the only ones there in the end. I decided to finally do it so the 58 set is on its He sent me a package last week when I wasn't home and told Ross it was for my birthday which is next weekend. He called me last night to see if I opened it and told him Ross hasn't given it to me yet. He said open it now since next week he won't have cell service he's back in Alaska. We looked thru some of his vu cards while in Kansas to see if I needed anything so was thinking he sent some of those. Opened it and there was a 56 topps mantle! We talked a lot about my cards and that I needed six cards for the topps run. I was kind of speechless for couple reasons, it caught be off guard and I just bought one last week and we haven't had that kind of relationship sincewe were in our 20's. It's in nicer shape than the one I purchased so I thanked him for it but couldn't tell him I just bought one because he was so excited about it. We talked about the post office before that the PO would try to get the item to owner if it got separated from the package if the item had the address on it also so he stuck a shipping label filled out on theback of the card holder so I couldn't see the back of the card. FYI if yousend a card in an envelope and it gets ripped open you won't see the card again but if you put a name and address in the card holder the PO will mail it to that address. Back to the story after getting off the phone I tried peeling off the labelso I could see the back of the card and YES it's the white back version I had bought the grey back. So not a dupe knocked off two mantles in a week don't do that very often. As Grant pointed out family is important they help shape you into what you are and this too has been an eye opener for me as to life's real priorities. He found me by doing a google search for N172 Brooklyn Minis. When searched it myself to seehow he got to me I found one of my old blog posts at the top of the list. Anyway, I told him I would ask (even though it's a shot in the dark) if anyone had an example they would consider trading or selling to him. If you do, or if you know anyone who has one, please let me know. I have emailed back and forth with Trent a fee times and he seems like a nice honest guy so far. I asked if he collects any vintage sets or just prewar type cards and he said he doesn't really collect the stuff we generally collect and send out. So I didn't suggest OBC to him. So if you can help me help him out please let me know. I'll continue to chat with him since I like meeting new collectors anyway. Thanks a lot Andy Huntoon OBC Rules!!! On March 8, 1941 the Brooklyn Dodgers announced that the team=E2=99s players would be wearing the helmets during regular season games. On April26, 1941 the Washington Senators joined the Dodgers as the only two teams to fully adopt the batting helmet for regular season use. From: Taylor Schock I wanted to share an experience of something I was able to secure last week. Some of you may have seen this on Net54, though it is a bit obscure and technically not a baseball 'card', so you might have just passed over it. But I wanted to share it here because it just goes to show that rare (and possibly unique) items are still out there. About a week and a half ago, through my regular scouring of auctions, estate sales, garage sales, etc, I came across an item described as "baseball pennants". There was a pic and I recognized some names so I knew the period of the piece. I went to the preview the day before the sale to look it over. There it was on a table next to some other odds and ends like it wasn't given much thought. So I looked at it a bit closer, and went home to do some research. I checked the Vintage guide I had, poked around online, and did some checking on previous sales as well. The issue in question are 1913 Cravats Felt Pennants. Some of you even responded to my request for latest checklists (thanks George and Guru). The latest vintage guide checklists 21 subjects, and subsequent to that I found a site that lists 25 subjects (http://www.oldcardboard.com/o/b/cravats/cravats-list.asp). I checked, rechecked, and re-rechecked the checklist with the notes I had taken from the preview. THAT'S when I started to get nervous. It was an easy decision to go to the auction, but thousands of thoughts, questions, scenarios, and possibilities went through my mind in the interim. All it takes is 2 people going after the same item. When the item came up, I knew I wasn't going to provide the opening bid, but I WAS going to bid. Live auctions are little like playing poker. The auctioneer finally got the price down enough for someone to provide the opening bid. I raised my card for the next bid. Then.... nothing from anyone else until the auction said "Sold!" and I raised my card to show my bidder number. WTF just happened? I tried to appear calm, but had someone taken my pulse, I would not have been surprised if it was double my resting heart rate as I now owned a piece that contains multiple items that do not appear in any checklists. The 1913Cravats Felt Pennants of "C Wagner" (Heine) and TWO different colors of "Hal Chase" (though one is obviously not complete). From side discussions with some Net54 board members, the Chase may be known but the Wagner may not. And now my dilemma begins. I have already had a VERY generous offer on the entire piece. They are rare, but low demand as well. They aren't anything Icollect, and probably never will. I enjoy the few B18s I have, but these are butt-ugly next to them. Sort of like comparing strip cards to tobacco cards. They also aren't 'cards', which if they were, would make my decision to keep them much easier. But there still is the cool factor of owning an example of something that possibly no one else has. I wanted to share this because I am obviously stoked, but also to show thatthere is still stuff out there to be found. And as I'm in a dilemma on whether to keep this or not, I'm definitely interested in other opinions as towhat you would do. ================= To: "obc-ramblings@yahoogroups.com" Date: Fri, 18 Sep 2015 20:59:20 -0400 Subject: RE: [OBC-Ramblings] Not the Black Swamp find, but... I wanted to share an experience of something I was able to secure last week. From: "George Vrechek" Thanks, Taylor, for the story on the Cravats Pennants. Seems like you can't go wrong by hanging onto them, but the value may be hard to decipher. It reminds me of the fellow in Wisconsin who found a box of cards under his elderly father's bed. Included were several uncatalogued Al Demaree Die Cuts (R304). The finder thought he would do well in selling them all. He did OK, but I think below his expectations. One bidder took most of what was offered. I wrote a story about the find which is on our library page. I remember talking to Al Rosen about the Al Demaree Die Cuts who surprised me in that he wasn't interested. He said they were rare but the market for them was too thin for him.too few potential buyers to risk much money on them. The message was that rare doesn't equate to valuable. A find of an uncatalogued T206, however, would be a big deal: lots of people have worked on the set and the cards are in the holy grail status as opposed to pennants that no one knows much about or have even seen. The SCD Catalog on both sets acknowledge that there are likely more uncatalogued items out there. ================= Date: Sat, 19 Sep 2015 14:09:11 +0000 (UTC) To: "Yahoo! Inc." You know the rules...$0 min bid, $0 max bid, winner takes all (whether you want them or not)! The first card up for auction this month is the Mets all-time leader in games played, Ed Kranepool. He was never much of a hitter, but survived 18 seasons by being useful pretty much everywhere for some horrible teams. However, my favorite memory of Kranepool was when he was interviewed at spring training by Bill Murray for SNL, as a teammate of Chico Escuela, and his tell all book about the Mets..."Bad Stuff 'Bout the Mets." I miss those old SNL days. When I go to Chicago, I still go to the Billy Goat Tavern, where they did "Cheezborger, cheezborger...no pepsi, coke." They have a great ribeye, and perhaps the worst beer in Chicago. I am a bit of a beer snob, so it's shocking that I go to a place that has "Light, Dark, or Schlitz" on tap. I have no idea what the light or dark are, but I usually go with dark. Never got the pennant, I had two Yaz shirts one was a t-shirt that we got from Cains (I left in our cottage over the winter after one wearing to the beach, and that was the end of that) and another t-shirt that said Red Sox with an 8 on front. Of course I knew the 8 belonged on back, rally bothered me. Can't remember when I first started seeing replica uniform shirts. I had a #39 "Sam Cunningham" Patriots shirt in the mid 70s, but I don't recall Baseball replicas till the 80's at least Finally, got a Yaz Mitchell and Ness shirt a few years ago on ebay for On Wed, Sep 30, 2015 at 9:36 AM, 'Ken M' cardclctor@aol.com [OBC-Ramblings] wrote: > I guess this would account for the popularity of retro or throwback > merchandise nowadays. Cost me $5 each from a dealer friend at ourmonthly show, who offered my money back if not real. SGC has a special this month grading T cards for $8 each, and I sent off nineteen diff T205s forslabbing, but also included 2 of the 1949 Bowman =E2=9Cblank-backs=E2=9D to have them authenticated as legit =E2=9Cblank-backs=E2=9D. Today I got my shipment from SGC and they did not slab the =E2=9Cblank-backs=E2=9D as they deemed =E2=9CAltered=E2=9D and =E2=9CRe-backed=E2=9D. I suppose the previous owner skinned these because the backs were messed up, or he wanted to pawn them off as legit =E2=9Cblank backs=E2=9D. I don=E2=99t know=E2=A6...Our monthly show is Saturday, but I know my dealer friend Mike is not going to set up, so I=E2=99ll haveto return them to him in November. I was charged $7 each for SGC to look at them, so I am out $14. ================= Date: 30 Sep 2015 18:04:29 -0700 To: Subject: CARDS on CARDS From: uthminsta@hotmail.com ================= Date: Wed, 30 Sep 2015 20:15:42 -0500 To: "uthminsta@hotmail.com" Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] CARDS on CARDS From: Jay Tysver You might consider the 1973 1953 reprints, but those are kind of pricey. > On Sep 30, 2015, at 8:04 PM, uthminsta@hotmail.com [OBC-Ramblings] > I have been working lately on a new mini-collection idea: CARDS on CARDS.I have been thinking of making this into a request/wantlist* but first, can anyone name anything I haven't thought of? > - 1974 Topps #2-6.
