I started with Morgan (1973) and Dave Concepcion (1977 & my HOMer) I actually got those on Poster Day in those years. I picked up a Ken Griffey (1978) & George Foster (1976) from eBay, bought a Tom Seaver ('79) from a nearbycollector & got a Ray Knight ('80) too. That left me needing Pete Rose (1974), Gary Nolan (1972), Johnny Bench (1971 & 1973), Tony Perez (1975) and Bobby Tolan (1972). (Except for 1972 & 1973, there was just one poster everyyear). So, I've had the other posters I needed on my eBay watch list for a while. Rose & Bench pop up every couple of months but at prices too high for me. Ihaven& #39;t seen a Perez or Nolan yet, and until this week hadn't seen a Tolan. Well, a Tolan popped up and it appears that the seller was....Bobby Tolan himself. Unfortunately I was out-bid. But I figured what the heck, I contacted the seller & asked if he had another one, and surprisingly he does. So I've made arrangements to buy one from him & have it autographed. Since you can't include an e-mail address in an eBay message - it gets blocked- I asked him to text me his e-mail address so I can pay him, & he did. SoI'm going to buy the Bobby Tolan poster from Bobby Tolan. How cool is that? Now I just have to find the wall space to display these things! From: Ed Pike Just picked up the last track and field athlete from the T230 Pan Handle Scrap World Champion Athletes set. This is a great set and includes one of the early cards of an African-American athlete. While these can be had without a lot of expense, a few have been surprisingly hard to find over the years and I wonder if there were some shortprints. There is also a swimmer, legendary Duke Kahanamoku, this is a lot more expensive so I am happy to call this complete with the 49 track and field athletes plus two pre-production proofs. I finished the National Licorice set of Champion Athletes earlier this year, if anyone is interested in the A. C. Gilbert card I have extras for the asking, Platt Adams, as well as a number of other track & field cards. Gilbert is the key card because he is also the inventor of the erector set. Side trivia question: what is the earliest trading card of an African-American athlete? I think I know the answer (from the 19th century). The last Raleigh "combo" show had more cards than toys setup. Compare that to Greensboro (last week) which was probably a good 3:1 toys:cards, though I did pick up a few good card deals from toy sellers. The June show will NOT be as big as the July show, which is a 3-day card show only, the weekend before the National. Regarding who will be there. Just got an email from Kurt Tourdot that he will be at this show. Chandy is usually there. Not sure about Uncle Dick (he is hit/miss at the combo shows), Larrie, or Jack. There are a few local dealers who usually have some good deals as well. If you will be in the area (1-2 hours away), it's probably worth the trip. I generally go Saturday but would stop by either/both days if someone else will be there. It's in the Kerr Scott building at the fairgrounds and therewill be signs. http://taylorssportscards.weebly.com/baseball.html To: obc-ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: OBC-Ramblings-noreply@yahoogroups.com Date: Tue, 9 Jun 2015 08:18:59 -0400 Subject: RE: [OBC-Ramblings] Raleigh show I usually go to the Raleigh show (about 2+ hour drive for me). Not havingthe luxury of going to many shows I don't have much to compare it to. If Uncle Dick is there, most of my time is spent in his bargain bin. Several OBC friendly dealers occasionally set up there, including Kurt Tourdot, Uncle Dick Decourcy, Larrie Dean, Chandy Greeholt and Jack Zerby. Not sure who will be there this time. One can easily peruse all of the tables, nooks & crannies in one day. Taylor Schock is our resident Raleigh show guru. Guaranteed you will have quite the experience for all you rookies. Always great to meet OBCers for the first time. Also, for those of you attending. You might want to slow down your search for cards for the time being. You are going to be handed a ton of envelopes.I am going to be smart and put my name on them so everyone can keep track easier. If you have miscut 1953 Topps that would give a hint as to the adjacent card(s), I would appreciate a scan of the card. Anything you've seen would help even if it isn't your card. I have made up theoretical layouts that I think are generally accurate, but I'd like to insert as much reality as possible into them. Reviews of eBay and Checkoutmycards have provided some clues but Topps must have done a better job on quality control back then since miscuts don't seem to be plentiful. There is an 10-year-old article I wrote on our library page regarding 1952s and 1953s layouts but I didn't delve into the 1953s as deeply as the 1952s. From: David Fallen As many of you know, I collect cards of MLB players who were born in the State of Washington. For 20 years now I have been looking for a card for Gary Martz who played in one game for the Kansas City Royals in 1975 - one AB, as a pinch hitter, bouncing into a force out. I just received in the mail, a card purchased on eBay - a 1976 Venezuelan League Stickers #203. This is the first time I have seen one for sale. He also has a 1976 Omaha Royals Top Trophies card which I have been unable to obtain so far. A few years ago, a complete set of these cards was on eBay and I intended to bid on it just for the one card. A fellow OBC'er convinced me not to bid because his friend was bidding on it and only wanted a couple of the cards and would gladly sell me the Martz card. After the auction, his friend changed his mind and would not break up the set. Lesson learned! Another one has never come up for sale. I had a dealer in Omaha looking at card shows for me for a couple of years, but never turned up anything. So it is extremely gratifying to get the Venezuelan League Sticker. I am now down to only one known vintage card which is a 1910 T210-6 Old Mill Red Border Mullin (Charlie Mullen). I have not been looking for 20 years for this one, because I only learned of its existence about three years ago due to the misspelling. This one, I'm sure, will turn up sooner or later although it will be much more expensive than the Martz card. Well this story has taken a very major turn, and not in a good way. I thought I would go ahead and post here and get some feedback. I have needed just one card to complete my 1966-67 Topps hockey set, I think the most expensive Topps hockey card there is #35 Bobby Orr rookie card. This card routinely sells for two grand. On ebay I found a card described "1966-67 Topps Bobby Orr RC ROOKIE #35 100% AUTHENTIC ORIGINAL Condition-poor to fair=E2=9D I thought this might be my chance and so I entered a strong bid using my =E2=9Csniper tool=E2=9D and won the card for $395. Of course this is a lot of money, but I had the cash and knew I would have to pay a good amount to get it. I was SO excited! Well the card arrives at my house yesterday, and the card is noticeably trimmed! left and right borders slightly trimmed. Top and bottom borders more noticeably trimmed. No mention of the card being trimmed in the description, but when I went back and looked at the pictures, I should have noticed that it was trimmed. But the trimmed card still presents well and I may keep it I have not opened a case with the seller yet, but I did send him a message,he has not responded yet. The auction states =E2=9Cno-returns=E2=9D,but it looks like if I wanted to get a refund I still might be able to, since the item was not as described. The seller has 100% feedback, and his other items looked good. Although he just posted a Jordan RC that is in off grade and listed as a =E2=9Cre-print=E2=9D lol. The Bobby Orr RC has been reprinted, in fact I have one of the reprints. There are also a couple sites that describe the Bobby Orr reprints, but this card appears to be =E2=9Cauthentic=E2=9D when compared to all my other 1966 hockey cards. So I am a little (very little) worried about the card being real, so I am sending it to SGC for grading, they have a three day turn around special $17 a card. But it is really worth it to me to see if this card is real and I think it is. They will grade the card A since it is trimmed (assuming it is legit) which is interesting because the seller describes the card as =E2=9CAuthentic=E2=9D and I expect SGC to grade the card =E2=9CAuthentic=E2=9D I have 30 days to file a claim with eBay I think. This looks like a 5-10% card, but being Orr, I would expect it to go around 15% or so. It does have face appeal and looks legit. Two things, wait to see what the seller says. Since you are getting it graded, even an "A", you just increased the value more than the $17 bucks. If you can get some of your money back and feel uncomfortable, you can always flip it graded with a $400 reserve. If you get it up to that price, I'm sure it will go even higher. This includes the invoice to the shirt maker, a small graphic designer fee (it wasn't me), and the cost of me shipping over 30 shirts through USPS. Those 5 more orders then give me the freedom to order some extras... to bring to the National, and have some for new members! So, who are the next 5 to step up? The heat is on! Aaron Shirley ORDER YOUR OBC SHIRTS BY THE END OF JUNE! - Shirt is garnet red with white print on front and back. - Small print on breast and large print on back. - Gildan 5000 pre-shrunk 100% cotton heavy weight tee. - Check out the mockup pic below. If it's not showing up, email me and I will send it to you directly. They are $9 for a regular shirt or $13 for a pocket tee. That price is for a shirt, hand-delivered, AT THE NATIONAL on Friday or Saturday. No matter which kind you order, for sizes larger than XL add $2, and for shipping add $3. It could be the camera angle, but the space under the "O" in Bobby and last "R" in Orr look different sizes. Also, kinda looks like it's not 45 degrees on the front bottom left corner. That part looks a little more noticeable on the back lower right of the card. Sal Domino OBC - 1992 In a message dated 6/24/2015 8:10:55 A.M. He gave me two options #1 send the card to Beckett for grading, if it came back trimmed he would give me a full refund. Option #2 offer a partial refund. I told him I had already sent the card to SGC and my preference was to keepthe card and get a partial refund. I was thinking to myself $100 partial refund but did not tell him this. The card should arrive at SGC today (they have to sign for it) and I paid for three day service so by Tuesday I should be able to look on-line and see what kind of grade the card gets. I=E2=99m still glad I sent the card off to get graded as this card has been reprinted. But after looking at thecard I am almost certain it is authentic. I just got another email from the seller: "I am thinking in the range of $75 for the refund. Reason is there really isn't any disparity in pricing from an SGC authentic card to SGC 10 at the price that you won the card at. I've attached the average ebay sales along with the last sgc authentic card that sold which is in worse condition that the one you have.=E2=9D I think I will accept his offer of $75 partial refund if the card grades an=E2=9CA=E2=9D I=E2=99ll let you guys know the results. The card should arrive at SGC today (they have to sign for it) and I paid for three day service so by Tuesday I should be able to look on-line and see what kind of grade the card gets. I=E2=99m still glad I sent the card off to get graded as this card has been reprinted. But after looking at the card I am almost certain it is authentic. Of the hobby pioneers used to name the levels, I think Buck Barker would have fit right in with OBC. He was very generous, wanted a card of every baseball player, wasn't concerned about condition, and had a high level of enthusiasm. He would send cards to people and not worry about when he got something back. In his later years, he would show up at shows and be swarmed because of his largesse with the cardboard. Lionel Carter was a great guy but he was a little too persnickety for OBC, he liked those sharp corners and even trades. From: GERALD TYSVER The 1975 minis aren't too hard to build as a set. There are really no rare cards, so if you get down to a handful of cards, others usually can help out. They are a little harder to find than any other 1970s cards however. I have a saved search on them on Ebay and check it quite often. You could probably find a lot there for between 20 and 40 cents per card. The biggest problem though is finding a lot or two big enough to do some serious damage to a set. I've seen them come up but its much rarer to find a 500 different card lot of 1975 minis in comparison to a 1970 Topps regular set. Its more typical to find 200 or 300 card lots. Generally, the shape on them tends to be better. I believe you could find a 500 card lot for about $150 or so, but it could go I would go after the set if I were you. Its a great set, full of great stars. Also, there are a lot of miscuts and poorly cut cards in that set. Its typical to find cards that are cut smaller than others and some that are badly off the mark on their cut. The =E2=9Cgasket=E2=9D has been custom fit, so it=E2=99s hard to even tell the card is trimmed. card looks great, and my =E2=9966-=E2=9967 Topps hockey set is complete! Cards needed to complete my 1954-1981 Topps hockey run is just 62, with most cards needed in the =E2=9964-=E2=9965 =E2=9Ctall-boys=E2=9D set. So of course not every deal works out perfectly, but I think this saga has a hobby ending, I like the card, and I think I paid a fair price. One thing I would have done differently, I would have been better to wait to hear back from the seller before sending the card off for grading. I wrote the seller and did not get a response after 24 hours, and I think I over reacted a little. I think the seller would have still given me a partial refund, even without having the card graded. But I don=E2=99t think the money spent grading has been wasted, the card looks pretty good in the slab, and I=E2=99m pretty sure I could get my money back if I put this card up for sale. ================= Date: 29 Jun 2015 20:13:47 -0700 To: Subject: Challenge the Yankees dice game From: bdangelo@aol.com ================= Date: 29 Jun 2015 20:27:01 -0700 To: Subject: OBC Scribes in action From: tvalacak@comcast.net ================= Date: Tue, 30 Jun 2015 08:05:34 -0400 To: "OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com" Subject: Re: Upcoming Chantilly VA show From: Andy It's next Friday to Sunday.
