Ron Perry and I met up 5 miles this side of the Blue Water Bridge at about 9 am on Friday morning and began our day long journey. We made great time, grabbed lunch at KFC and we were in line by 1:10 pm or so and got onto the show 10 minutes later. I was on the prowl for items I just don't see often in theStates so within a few minutes I found my first `66 OPC baseball card frommy list and I felt confident that some of these would be found. Ron and I spent the entire day together, bird-dogging and doing our best to get bundled deals from the dealers. By the end of the day we had negotiated about (5) different deals that netted up 130+ `50-`60's Topps and Parkhurst Hockey at about $1.25 a piece Canadian - not bad. At about 4 pm we had heard that Mike Rich was in the building from Larry Kerrigan and we kept our eye out but never ran into him, by this time we have made it through about 3/4 of the show so we continued down the isles. We had planned to leave about 6 pm so imagine my surprise when at about 6pm we were half way down the final rowwhen we stopped at a dealer we had pretty good luck with the last time we were in Toronto. I quickly leaf through a small binder with `52 Topps and come across a page with (8) HI numbers with a price tag of $25 a piece. I immediately offered the guy $150 for the lot and he accepted. Ron only wantedthe Billy Hoeft (sorry Grant) so I handed it over to him for $20 - so after the exchange rate figure close to $15 a piece for the `52 HI numbers. Mike had told me that many of his `52 HI numbers have come from this show so Iwas looking for them and just could not believe this purchase. We doubled back to a dealer we had stopped by about (4) different times and I picked up a binder with most of the `74-75 OPC Hockey set in it for $50 Canadian. Ihad hoped to get some substantial starter sets of `70's OPC cards and thiswas the best I could do, all in all I came home with (18) assorted OPC Baseball from `65 - `76, (15) `61-62 Salada/Sheriff Hockey coins, (80) assorted `52 - 69 Topps and Parkies Hockey (56 came from the joint deals that Ron and I purchased together), (10) `70's Hockey cards with a single from the `74/75 Topps set that kills that set, the `52 HI and `74/75 OPC near set. Wewere back in the car headed home by 6:30 pm where Ron spent about an hour and a half splitting up our joint purchases by going through each of our want lists and making piles of stuff we each needed. Amazingly, when he was done I had 56 cards and he had 55 with very few cards that would be dupes, it easily made the ride home seem much shorter. We grabbed a bite to eat, waited for about 15 minutes at the border and made it back to my car by 11 pm, so I was home before midnight. Quite the road trip - I had a blast and found some great deals!!! (only disappointment - not a single `71 OPC HI number in the joint that I needed - oh well maybe next time) BE WELL!!! I picked up what I think is a rare item that I likely way overpaid for, but having not seen it before, caused me to go for it. What is such an item? 1939 World Wide Gum (WWG - Canadian Goudey) Premium of Ted Williams! I had heard there was a Canadian version of this tough US set (not even Bama has the US set). The dealer and I were off in coming to an agreement, as I felt I gave him my best offer, and he needed more. Wecompromised by my giving him his figure and he tossed in a few more prewaritems (B18 blanket, 1939+ Salutation Williams and a R-312). That one purchase equaled everything else I spent for the weekend. I also spent on getting a 1955 Topps Doubleheader with Jackie Robinson to get me down to just a common to complete the set (#61-2), assuming I can ever find my Aaron gremlin. Mark Talbot told me I got a great deal when picking up 4 Gum Adventure Boxing, including Marciano, from a dealer I also got 3 Tipton GEM mint OPC prewar hockey. It gets me down to 4 to go on the Gum Adventure set, all boxers. I have truly awful condition prewar cards, and the OPC hockey I picked up rank right at the top. I also got a couple of group lots of 1935-40 Canada Starch Crown Brand Hockey photos and a1954 Quaker Oats Hockey photos. I know those sound obscure, but I already was over 1/2 done on the Canada Starch and by getting 7 more hits, I am down to 26 of 66 in the set. The grouplot resulted in some dupes, so in the unlikely event anyone has 1 (type card , etc.) to swap, please see my list. So the last couple hours really made a difference in the whole show. Still only got about 45 hits (not counting the 20 Red Man variations) to my vintage lists for a 3 day major regional convention. With only expecting to be at the National for 2 days this year, I wonder what I can expect. Of the 45 hits, 24 or so were hockey, and another 13 were Canadian issues, 6 British (Ogdens and Gallahers) issues, leaving only the 55 Topps Doubleheader of Robinson and the B-18 Blanket as "normal" hits. I have been really researching these Kahns issues lately, as they have been surfacing in Dayton. There has been a real surge in the 57-69 kahns issues in the last week. Not sure how or why, but hundreds have popped up from nowhere, between a local card shop, and the monthly Dayton card show.... Anyhow, with what little i do know of the Cincinnati regional weiner dog issues, it seems to be more than what the dealers know. (Thanks to obc that is) Anyhow, i found a few for under 5 bucks and picked up a couple... The standard catalog by Lemke suggests the kahns 1966-69 issues may have to be determined by the collectors according to the particular pose... My first book has been published, and it's called "Never Fear: The Life & Times of Forest K. Ferguson Jr." Ferguson was a star at the University of Florida from 1939 to 1941, mostly in football, but alsoin track, boxing and baseball. He was Florida's second-ever All-American. He also won the national junior AAU title in the javelin throw in June 1942. He enlisted in the Army and distinguished himself at Normandy on D-Day, earning a Distinguished Service Cross Medal. He suffered a severe head woundat Omaha beach after one of his acts of braver, and died of complications of the wound in 1954. It's a self-published book through Lulu.com, which iskind of a cool concept. I am selling on lulu (they take a cut) and it willbe on the Amazon and Barnes & Noble sites soon (they will take a bigger cut). And I am selling it on my own, since I have books at home that I ordered. Just one of those goals I always wanted to hit, and I finally did it. > Now I know how Rob Fitts and Ed Watts feels when a book is released, or when Jake Elwell promotes a book that does well. This sounds like my resignation letter, IT=E2=99S NOT! One of the many things I like about OBC, is that at the start of the year, many members post their goals for the year. I=E2=99ve never posted goals, never really thought about collecting goals other than completing sets. Well I did have one collecting goal this year, and I recently accomplished it. From a 1952 Topps Eddie Waitkus, then a 1965 Topps baseball set, then a 1955 Bowman baseball set, then the full Topps run, then Bowman and Fleer baseball run. Then Topps football basketball hockey runs, non sports, and more recently T205 T206 =E2=9930s Goudey baseball etc etc. According to theGeorge V. survey I have one of OBCs largest collections (not saying valuable) with over 30,000 pre 1980 cards! I don=E2=99t know what happened. The days drag on and the years fly by! 25 years later I do have pretty valuable collection. But I never took the steps to protect it through insurance. If my understanding is correct, my normal homeowners policy would not cover the loss of my collection. You either have to get extra insurance (a =E2=9Crider=E2=9D?) through my homeowners policy, or go through a company that specializes in collectibles. My collection is very organized, and with almost all raw cards, it=E2=99s pretty compact too for the amount of cards I have. I get a RAOK, I=E2=99ll send out my thanks, read the back of the card, update my wantlist, and file the card in it=E2=99s box. I have maintained a very current wantlist for years, but to be honest with you guys, was somewhat unsure of exactly what I had! I can use my wantlist for inventory, but completed sets had to be accounted for. So this was my first step, inventory. I now have a current =E2=9Chave=E2=9D list, printed out, and in =E2=9Cthe cloud=E2=9D. I=E2=99ve seen a few threads over at Net54 about insurance, including posts from Josh Levine. Many collectors recommend www.collectinsure.com and that is who I went with. They attend the National Convention every year. It was very easy to get my collection insured.I think the hardest part was figuring out some kind of value for my collection, and how much to insure it for. They did not require someone to appraise your collection this is something you do. I thought, what would happen if my collection was stolen or destroyed? Well at this stage of the game if a loss happened, I would not try to rebuild it. I would probably try to complete some pre war sets, but I would not replace the 50s 60s 70s stuff. Of course the higher value you place on your collection, the higher you premium I insured my collection for $35,000 which cost me $210 per year. I got no discounts that I know of because I do not have a security system or video cameras or a safe (I think the safe had to be 300 pounds?). I=E2=99m looking into safety deposit boxes at my bank too. One thing I found out, the bank does not insure what is in your safety deposit box I didnot know this. Now www.collecinsure.com policy does include items in a safety deposit box, you just have to inform them that part of your collection resides there. I was surprised that a safetydeposit box is made of plastic (?) but of course is locked safely away at the bank. collect insure.com does not discount if part of your collection is in a safety deposit box, but they do insure it (if they know it=E2=99sthere) again the bank does not insure what=E2=99s in your safety deposit box. I thought the cost of the safety deposit boxes were pretty cheap, ten inch by ten inch box was only $70 a year, three by ten only $40 a year. I really don=E2=99t see any advantage in using a safety deposit box? Net54 members may or may not know that the owner of Net54 Leon is selling his collection through Heritage Auction house this summer, Leon has some very valuable and rare cards. Leon is selling to pay for his daughters education, but is already talking about his =E2=9Cphase II collection=E2=9D LOL! Last year an OBC member (I think it might have been Joel) asked me about what I thought would happen to my collection when I leave this world. Myoldest collects some, and is a big baseball fan. I know he has his eyes onmy cards LOL! The one thing I would not want is some sort of fight over mycards, I guess I need to work this out with my kids. I suppose if my son wants the cards, the other kids would get more of my cash lol (not that I=E2=99m planning on leaving a lot of cash lol). I would rather sell it all than have this happen, and who knows what will be my thinking in ten years anyway? Right now I am enjoying my cards more than ever! I get so much enjoyment and I have lots of time to play with them lol! The days drag on and the yearsfly by! OBC Rules! Safety deposit box for cards? Yes or No? I may purchase some up to date price guides to try and determine maybe a better value for my collection. $35,000 on one hand I think this might be low, but I really don=E2=99t want to spend a fortune on insurance either. We had our dad do that for his valuables few years back and I believe we got a real nice one for around $800at Costco. My thoughts. I don't understand the safe deposit box. What's the sense in having cards that you can't look at. I think the safe is a better idea if you want to go that route, especially if you have a Wagner! Insurance should really be for things you cannot easily replace yourself: Life, Home, Auto (more for damages and injury on a crash). If I pay $210 at age 30 on $30,000 worth of cards, that is over $10,000 by age 80 (leaving out inflation). That's a lot of money for something that should very likely not ever happen. Paying a small amount to offset a large potential loss is good choice. Paying a small amount to offset a small loss is generally a bad choice...so itreally comes down to the value of your collection. Note that collectible insurance covers mail shipments as well, so that can be a money saver too. The good thing about insurance is that I can continue to enjoy the collection, rather than lock it away in a safety deposit box...which often costs about the same. I think Guru made a great choice...and no, I'm not an insurance salesman. ( There is usually somesmall print or excuse to delay or deny paying out ) The insurance thing always troubled me too. I can insure my home but not what is in it if the value of my belongings exceeds the arbitrary amount. I wonder why? Oh yes, that's because no one steals your house! They only stealyour stuff...and we cannot cover that possibility without extra money. I have a safety deposit box since it's not that expensive, and I do own some pretty expensive cards that would be tough to replace. But it's not full, and I really don't like putting cards in there since ( as you point out) you cannot see them easily afterwards. I might not keep it the next time thebill comes due. Especially knowing that it offers only off-site protectionand no fiscal recovery, it's really not that great a service either. If I have to sleep with my Lou Gehrig , Babe Ruth and Honus Wagner cards, I will:-) I wonder about the stuff others have that are valuable, but are not baseball cards. Would the conversation be about the same? I don't personally have anything valuable EXCEPT baseball cards so I am not protecting jewelry , art or antiques or other "stuff". Maybe you guys have other "stuff" that would warrant special attention and protection... And back to your math...I am way past 30 , getting closer to 80 every day, so while the insurance still does not make sense, at least I won't be out $100K OBC Forever Sent from XFINITY Connect Mobile App ------ Original Message ------ From: Bob Donaldson obcbobd@gmail.com [OBC-Ramblings] To: LAWRENCE TIPTON Cc: OBC Ramblings Sent: May 18, 2015 at 1:42 PM Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] Collectibles Insurance Nice post Larry. It seems like only yesterday that my oldest son brought home a pack of 1988 Donruss baseball cards. And I remembered how much I loved my cards as a kid. I started with zero cards back then, and for just a few years collected the new stuff. Istill remember buying my first vintage card at a card show, a 1952 Eddie Waitkus =93shot by a crazed girl=94 for .25c. I got Willie Davis to sign a 1968 Topps card at another show. I started collecting the 1965 Topps baseball set, cards which I collected as a kid, still prob my favorite set! Then we moved to Oklahoma, I bought our first computer in 1991, and was part of the original OBC group that spun off of the Prodigy on-line network. The days drag on and the years fly by lol! I=92m 61 years old, retired over three years, solid old-school Gov=92t Pension 4 years military 29 years FAA air traffic control. Good health, no bills, no worries. Divorced since 2003, still happily single, four great kids, six grandkids (two more on the way). I thank God every minute of every day for all of these blessings. This sounds like my resignation letter, IT=92S NOT! One of the many things I like about OBC, is that at the start of the year, many members post their goals for the year. I=92ve never posted goals, never really thought about collecting goals other than completing sets. Well I did have one collecting goal this year, and I recently accomplished it. From a 1952 Topps Eddie Waitkus, then a 1965 Topps baseball set, then a 1955 Bowman baseball set, then the full Topps run, then Bowman and Fleer baseballrun. Then Topps football basketball hockey runs, non sports, and more recently T205 T206 =9230s Goudey baseball etc etc. According to the George V. survey I have one of OBCs largest collections (not saying valuable) with over 30,000 pre 1980 cards! I don=92t know what happened. The days drag on and the years fly by! 25 years later I do have pretty valuable collection. But I never took the steps to protect it through insurance. If my understanding is correct, my normal homeowners policy would not cover the loss of my collection. You either haveto get extra insurance (a =93rider=94?) through my homeowners policy, or go through a company that specializes in collectibles. My collection is very organized, and with almost all raw cards, it=92s pretty compact too for the amount of cards I have. I get a RAOK, I=92ll send out my thanks, read the back of the card, update my wantlist, and file the card in it=92s box. I have maintained a very current wantlist for years, but to be honest with you guys, was somewhat unsure of exactly what I had! I can use my wantlist for inventory, but completed sets had to be accounted for. So this was my first step, inventory. I now have a current =93have=94 list, printed out, and in =93the cloud=94. I=92ve seen a few threads over at Net54 about insurance, including posts from Josh Levine. Many collectors recommend www.collectinsure.com and that iswho I went with. They attend the National Convention every year. It was very easy to get my collection insured. I think the hardest part was figuringout some kind of value for my collection, and how much to insure it for. Of course the higher value you place on your collection, the higher you premium is. I insured my collection for $35,000 which cost me $210 per year. I got no discounts that I know of because I do not have a security system or video cameras or a safe (I think the safe had to be 300 pounds?). I=92m looking into safety deposit boxes at my bank too. One thing I found out, the bank does not insure what is in your safety deposit box I did not know this. Now www.collecinsure.com policy does include items in a safety deposit box, you just have to inform them that part of your collection resides there. I was surprised that a safety deposit box is made of plastic (?) but of course is locked safely away at the bank. collect insure.com does notdiscount if part of your collection is in a safety deposit box, but they do insure it (if they know it=92s there) again the bank does not insure what=92s in your safety deposit box. I thought the cost of the safety deposit boxes were pretty cheap, ten inch by ten inch box was only $70 a year, three by ten only $40 a year. I really don=92t see any advantage in using a safety deposit box? Net54 members may or may not know that the owner of Net54 Leon is selling his collection through Heritage Auction house this summer, Leon has some very valuable and rare cards. Leon is selling to pay for his daughters education, but is already talking about his =93phase II collection=94 LOL! Last year an OBC member (I think it might have been Joel) asked me about what I thought would happen to my collection when I leave this world. My oldest collects some, and is a big baseball fan. I know he has his eyes on my cards LOL! The one thing I would not want is some sort of fight over my cards, I guess I need to work this out with my kids. I suppose if my son wants the cards, the other kids would get more of my cash lol (not that I=92m planning on leaving a lot of cash lol). Yes or No?I may purchase some up to date price guides to try and determine maybe a better value for my collection. $35,000 on one hand I think this might be low, but I really don=92t want to spend a fortune on insurance either. In case of a loss I have something? Thoughts? Thanks for the chance to ramble. ================= Date: Tue, 19 May 2015 12:03:21 -0400 To: LAWRENCE TIPTON , Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] What The Heck (Guru Starts New Sets????) Only one I can understand is 751 Al Weis, as he is hard to find in the Topps version also. But sheesh should I be looking to spend 35-40 bucks for Jerry Robertson? I need 15 more OPC's for the Met run and 6 are 1971 high numbers. Some stuff I have read throw out numbers like 1000 sets made, etc. Are you guys just happy to see a high number available and grab it at just about any price? As long as you aren't bidding against me, I say go for it! (just kidding about the not bidding against me part) The price ranges you noted are fairly accurate from my experience. There are a few of us out here who are working on this set, and I have a couple dealers I see regularly at the "local" shows and have them always on the lookout for me for off-condition T205s and T206s. I can occasionally get them for less than ebay and keep an eye out for those of us collecting them. Net54is a good venue as well, but as with ebay, it's hit or miss on any real deals. Though the worry factor is MUCH less. As noted, the HOFers can be expensive in any condition as well as the SPs, which can be even tougher to find, but that's part of the fun in trying to put this one together. And right now I'm enjoying the pre-war stuff much more than working on my '50s and '60s stuff, which is what it's all about anyway. To be fair though, I'm only down to the Joss to complete the set - and there's some of the previously mentioned super scarce variations everyone else needs. I'm also trying to fill out the set with Polar Bear backs - still need about a dozen and a half of the possible cards for that quest. I managed to come across a few at the National last year for under ten bucks (commons I didn't need, but bought anyway), so there are some deals out there, especially if you come across a group lot... which I'm guessing probably isn't too common now. Most of the HOF'ers in the set are easy to find. but pricey. I've found that the Cobb, Johnson and Young will probably be the big three pricewise - although the Joss and Wilhelm will probably set you back a good amount as well. I don't recall any other cards being very elusive or really out of line with the average common or HOF price. Hope this helps, Ken M In a message dated 5/25/2015 6:13:10 P.M. Noneof the cards are that tough unless you go for variations...with the Wilhelm being really tough for me (though someone was probably hoarding them at the time ). Very few fakes of them as the gold borders make it tough to copy and easy to tell. I have seen a lot of fake t206's and CJ's...that look pretty good...never seen a good t205 fake. I did a little research on the interwebs about this problem, and came up with the following high-level description. Our website is a bit outdated (STILL trying to get my son to work on it, that's probably not going to happen, sadly, so I'll do it) and we're presenting our information (directory, want lists, features, who-collects-what, etc.) using "frames", or sections of a web page. There are other, better ways to do it. I've just found out that there's something within Google Sites which prevents a page from that site from appearing in a frame in any web page at all. It only affects the want lists that are hosted on sites.google.com. When we try to write the information from those want lists into the frame area, Google prevents that from happening. It's some kind of a failsafe technique to prevent "click-thrus" or automated processing which are evidently very bad things if used in the wrong way. Over the next few days I'll be looking into this problem, trying to come up with something that can at least be a temporary work-around. We'll figure something out. ================= Date: Tue, 26 May 2015 12:45:48 -0400 To: "" Subject: Fight with Matt Stairs From: Shawn Smart Hi OBC. As hard as they may be to find elsewhere, I don't think I've ever run across any at shows here in southern Ohio. I've resisted attempting to look for the 1971 OPC cards, but I do like the way the backs pop out at you. After reading the ongoing discussion, I'm seriously considering adding just the Reds cards to my WL (no small feat, since that includes guys named Rose, Bench and Perez). I may buy some dollar specials from COMC just to get a start on it. Looking at the scans on COMC, I noticed that some of the backs have the 1971 Topps design (player photo on the left) - only with the OPC gold - and only English on the back. So, as a novice on this set, I have to ask - what's up with that? I think the cards I saw with that design were in the semi-high series, not the high series. I can occasionally get them for less than ebay and keep an eye out for those of us collecting them. Net54is a good venue as well, but as with ebay, it's hit or miss on any real deals. Keep in mind, the White Sox are in town that Friday, for those interested. It's also the night of the Net54 dinner. I highly suggest that if you haven't already, join the Net54 boards. Guaranteed to find out things about cards you had no idea you didn't know. Cubs game Monday for those who will be in town. Don't forget to give me your cell number and to contact me as soon as you get in town. My guess is that Steve and Mike will be working on securing us some badges and Steve will set up the "preferred" dealer list. (Damn I think we have this down like clockwork!). If the other items arenot legit, I would question that one as well. I was at a local show a fewmonths ago where I found a box loaded with suspicious cards a dealer was consigning for another dealer. I let them both know that I did not think they were legit, so I was passing on them, and they commented, buyer beware. We do not know, and are putting them out "at a fair price". I warned a few others looking through the box, and based on my reputation, they walked away, figuring I knew more than most. Still grates on me that the dealers left them out on the table. They know better. The guy a the table is legit, but the guy he was consigning them for, is a scumbag. There was a dealer there that I had not seen before. He had a lot of vintage stuffin a $5 box. I picked out 3 cards that I thought were good deals but I wasn't sure what exactly they were. First turns out to be a 1931 W517 of Chalmer Cissell. I'm pretty sure it's legit. The second was an Official 1934Babe Ruth Baseball Club Membership card. I'm not totally sure that it is genuine. I had no idea what the 3rd card was but I remembered seeing it inmy SCD price guide. I figured at $5 it was worth a shot. It was a 3X2 card of Babe Ruth with "Compliments of Babe Ruth and Chicago Herald and Examiner". The card looked the right age and had stains. But according to SCD this card came in two sizes, 5x7 and 8x12. So unless some of you guys haveinformation about a super rare mini version on this ca rd I guess I'm out $5. A dozen envelopes/packages went out. Anyone expecting stuff from the Toronto show were included, plus paybacks, etc. They are getting tougher and tougher with enforcing the thickness requirement or charging $2.32 for exceeding it. actually took back one envelope to see if I can repackage to avoid the surcharges. Maybe send as 2 separate mailings. I put stamps on some and put them through the mail slot, instead of at the counter. Hopefully no one gets postage due envelopes. The semi-annual show was this weekend and Brian was able to get us great seats for the Mariners game and for weeks we have heard about the foot long kielbasa that we were going to have to have. Dave's focus was like the hunt for that last card to kill a set. At 6:00 pm Saturday night I'm sure you all heard the deep loud sigh. Dave and Brian as normal had some great cards for me which are always greatly appreciated. The show was very good with a couple of new dealers which brought in some fresh inventory I was able to start four new setsI picked up 30 mothers cookies from 52 & 53 sets. My first two cards from the 53 glendale's and two from the 53 hunter hot dog set. Picked up a lot of 70's football/ basketball and fifty Indian Goudey's other misc. stuff. Had a great weekend one of the best I've had with friends and cards only one bad thing comes out of it six month wait to do it again. Thank you Dave and Brian for the awesome weekend.
