We are considering having a pizza party on Saturday nightof the Philly Non-Sports Card Show. This would be held at the Hilton Garden Inn in the Lehigh Valley Room (same room where NSU Card Talk is held). The cost would be $10 per person and we would have pizza, salad, and soda. Weare also considering holding this in conjunction with a showing of the 1987 Garbage Pail Kids Movie. The movie is rated as one of Rotten Tomatoes' worst and we could make fun of the movie while it plays. After the movie, there would still be time to head over to the Red Robin. Or we could simply eat pizza and use the time to talk to our fellow dealers and collectors. Would you be interested in coming and/or the movie? We will only do these activities if there is enough interest. Please answers our very brief survey either way, even if you're not at all interested. > Special Merchandise Available for Sale at the Philly Show Promo card collectors will definitely want to checkout "promoking's" table at the Philly Show. It was one of the few good trades I made as a kid. The box included a 25 year-old set of cards (at the time) the 1933 Goudeys, mostly in OBC-condition. There were also smatterings of 1934 Goudeys, 1935 Goudeys, and Diamond Stars. There was also one 1941 Play Ball of Mel Ott and a few 1939 Play Balls. When I returned to collecting in 1981, I staring working on sets of sentimental value. Even though I only had a few 1939 Play Balls, I liked the set because it was relatively affordable and reminded me of my long-gone softball. I finished the set years ago along with most of the other sets from the era, but then got into variations. It must have been 1999 before I realized there were 1939 PB back variations involving the upper/lower case for the player's name as well as the entire text layout. Naturally I started working on the variations. I decided early on that I didn't need to buy another DiMaggio or Williams with the back variations, but all the other cards 71 were in play. By 2002 I had reduced my 1939 PB back variation needs list to 48 cards. It was down to 18 by 2010. As you know it gets tougher at the end with guys like Doerr, Dickey, Gomez, Gehringer, Ott, Hubbell, Greenberg and Klein still on my list. However by 2014 I was down to 11 guys and this year I finally got down to 2 cards: Dickey and #25 George Selkirk. I knew Dickey would be hard to find in my price range, but I figured I should have picked up old Twinkletoes by now. I saw old George on eBay with his name written on the front top and another one with his name scrawled on the image by previous owners. I figured I didn't need, yet another, variation of Twinkletoes and I kept looking. Finally this morning he was there with no gratuitous writing for a buy it now price of $10. I bought it. Now down to just Dickey in small letters. The point of my ramble though isn't so much about welcoming Twinkletoes to my binder or about still needing Dickey (Willams and DiMaggio). Before I checked out with the seller, I took advantage of free shipping by adding in a few other cards. Three of the cards I added were 1949 Bowman baseball graybacks from the first series. These variations had lingered on my list for years. I hadn't worked too hard to find them, hoping somehow they would "fly over the transom" into my collection. Well, I decided I better get going on those, so now I'm down to "just" needing 37 more to knock off the 72 back variations. The collecting process continues. I know there were three card panels that were distributed as "salesman samples" in the late 50's and 60's. The front of the panel showed three regular cards and theback was clearly different than the regular cards. There is a great example of this from 1965 in the following link. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1965-Topps-Baseball-SALESMAN-SAMPLE-3-CARD-PANEL-RARE-NM-MT-/221893644272?hashit= I guess its not surprising that these uncut panels are very rare and often the cards were cut apart by hand creating the still rare, but somewhat morecommon card like this. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1959-Topps-Advertising-Bazooka-Promo-Salesman-Sample-Pedro-Ramos-Senators-/231521905896?hashitem35e= There is also another interesting variant. Apparently some 1959 cards wereprinted in an unusual green ink and possibly of some other random player. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1959-Topps-Advertising-Promo-Salesman-Sample-Torre-= Some people are advertising wrong back cards as salesman samples?? I don't know if this is true or if the cards are simply wrong backs. Obviously someof the salesman sample cards did have stats on the back from other players, but I don't know if that is always the case. EBay seems to have Topps samples from 1953, 1956, 1957, 1959, 1960, 1961, and Andy if you are looking for a less expensive salesman sample consider looking into the 1939 Play Ball cards. Some have a red stamp that is on the back of the card and surprisingly these seem cheaper than the Topps counterparts. I do have one of these and when I purchased it the seller told me all about the Topps examples which I am now pursuing. Apparently he's been around a while but finally 'moved up' to the inside main building. He had a nice $1 box, which apparently 30 minutes earlier had a bunch of 52 topps, but only 2 remained. They're mine now. I bought about 60 cards from the box, nearly half were post - mostly 63's but a handful of 62's I needed too and a couple 61's. Anyway, I wound up getting two #154's because I wasn't careful about grabbing dupes, BUT, when I looked at it later, the sticker on one said "ERROR" card. Turns out it was a Jello card. I laughed that the jello was labeled as an error card. BUT (again) it turns out that 1963 post #154 does have an error card! So I wound up with a post #154 and a jello #154 error card - it is indeed the jello error version of the correct post version I also bought. All of this leads to my question - are the error cards the same for post and jello? My SCD Vintage book only lists errors in the post - none for the jello. ================= Date: Sat, 3 Oct 2015 22:45:45 -0400 To: obc Subject: Hornish From: Wes Shepard Anyone have email for dave hornish? I looked through his other stuff and found very cool Lyons Tea Cards (HMS 1902-1962, Wings Across the World) and a Kellogg Company of Great Britain (Ships of the British Navy). Sets are circa 1961 and 1962. Very nice shape. Anyone able to add some insight into these sets? Seems there are a bunch of Lyons sets to be had. Great looking Also made two nice trades on Net54. One guy, Alvin is going to apply for OBC membership. I think James also had a deal with him. Also a good trader is Gman23. Secured some nice cards for my Red Sox set 66-79 (As yet unposted- yeah I finally got around to putting one together). You Net54 guys can look them up, they are looking for stuff that we can help with. From: ChicoD1@aol.com Find yourself with a lot of cards lying around and just wonder what to do with the ones everyone already has? So like most of us, I decided to start a new set, 1969-79 Red Sox. I had a bunch of dupes still lying around that couldn't find homes, so after years of procrastinating, I decided to do a Red Sox set. It's posted on my want list, along with a new section for non-sport. Last show I went to, I pulled the trigger on 4 1969 Man On The Moon cards,so I finally got around to starting that one (I may do the 1970 set also). The space program was always of particular interest to me as a kid, and these cards are way cool. Next on the goal list, sort out and see how many football sets I can start, based on what I have. There will be some Medoza's in that pile, but I think I'm taking a break from sorting through large boxes of cards. Time to hit a few goals before Christmas with a big LI show and the big Westchester show coming up in the next two months. I think that's one of the cool things about collecting cards-- you can always create a custom set just for you! From: EEK This month marks my 14th year as a member of OBC. Over thepast few years my activity level has dropped to almost nil. Life moves us inmany directions over time and with my wife's recent retirement, I have decidedto go inactive within the next few months. I do not know the future, however I'mhoping that this is not good bye but simply a "see you later" temporarydeparture. I do know that I will miss all my friends here, many of whom I havenever met and some I have not even introduced myself to. Somewhere along theline I have heard the phrase "I have never met an OBCer I did notlike." That resonates with me. Well except for that Snake Talbot! Kiddingof course. Mark was the first OBCer I met after joining and I remember thatmeeting well. I thought, "if the other members of OBC are like this guy, Ihave joined up with a bunch of awesome guys" (and even a few gals back inthat day.) Of course I now know that all of OBC is awesome. The kindness, caring and camaraderie of this group can only be matched by those person's inanother group I belong to who are often referred to as "Friends of Bill W."I am hopeful thatI will have an opportunity for a FOOTogether with Snake,Motor Mouth and other FOOT faithful before year's end, but that will take someplanning. I owe many OBCers more than just some hits to their list, and there are alot of those to be sure. I am hoping to review lists and getsome cardboardout within the next few weeks and into the holiday season. Iwill start with WAY overdue hits to recent Super bowl and March Madnesswinners. Yep, I'm that far behind! My quest is to hit every member's list withat least an SCP. That is a tall order because some lists are almost impossibleto hit, at least with the paucity of items in my dupes box. I know that therewill be many names in the Directory that I do not recognize and I will do mybest to send out a few overdo "Welcome to OBC" envelopes. As soon asI discover how to un-publish my wantlist site I will shut that down. In theinterim I am asking OBCer's to refrain from sending out ROAKs to the House ofMaxwell. I am in the process of deciding what part of my collection I want tokeep and which will go. Of course my Tigers Team set will remain and eventuallygo to myonly Son's only Daughter, Shalynn. Also Paw Paw will remain as will anumber of HOFers. My HOM HOF will stay because that is an almost all OBCcontributions set (most often smacked around by Lynn Miller.) I am open to suggestions regarding my purging of cardboard. My collection is not large by most OBC standards and I don't have a lot of highdollar cards. In my last few months as an active member I would like to assumea role of Dealer Scum and offer up cards to OBCer's for a reasonable sum with amembers discount of course. I'm not sure at what point I will consider contacting dealerswho are in buying mode. My majorproblem is that I have little time orinclination to wade through everything I have and post all the individual cardsImight have available. Also as a grader I'd make a good house plant. Iwouldnot know how to begin putting a price tag on cards and I find price guides asbeing out of touch with reality with their pricing. My Baseball Card Collectiondungeon is in total disarray and this whole process seems a bitoverwhelming. I will be mindful of all the cardboard that I have receivedfrom OBCers in puffies, flats and brick boxes as well as some pretty creativenon standard mailing "envelopes". I need to keep those treasures andwill do my level best to avoid scumming them. I think I am in tune with theOBC collective conscienceregarding sending out ROAKs that were originally ROAKed to me, but feel free tochime in on that. I don't spend a lot of timeonline so I may not respond right away but I will respond. At this point my PC functions mostly asa word processor to support my passion for writing. Meaning he sees book value for Nonsport like I would look at book value for baseball. Since Nonsport cards are secondary to me I'm looking for even betterdeals for them compared to baseball. He sees Nonsport as the primary so for some things I think he wanted too much for cards. Not to say they mightnot be a decent deal for a collector that puts them first. That means he went through all the same training as everyone else in the Army but drew the job of clearing bodies from battlefields. Tough He first showed me the 100 or so model airplanes he had hanging in his garage. Most were balsa some were plastic. He claims balsa is much easier to work with. He showed me through his house, pictures on the wall mostly, his son died at a very young age. His wife 4 years ago. And the love of his life, his daughter died a few years ago. It was clear that I was going to spend some time before seeing any cards. (he had called me to buy his old cards) I was glad to spend the time. He is clearly lonely and a terrific piece of memorabilia himself. He finely showed me the 30 or so Dover Reprints. I had to tell him that there was no fortune among his Ruth/Williams/Mays collection. He was a little disappointed but I told him that maybe one of his 5 Grandchildren might like them and he liked that idea. So I have seen these reprints before but what was interesting about these was that Dover had simulated old Scotch tape on the backs of these cards. Has anyone else ever seen this before? Anyone collect/want these? Thanks for reading and I hope that all are well. I think that guy appreciates his career and baseball, as he always has a smile on his face. Best part- caught up with Kevin and Joanne. I didn't mail out his "healing power" as I wanted him to make it to the show. Kev looks good (as well as either of us can look) and I challenged him to a race in the parking lot lol. Also, thanks for the handshake of 8 61Ts including Early Wynn and a Ford WS card! Did find a few things, nothing earth shattering. Picked up a 1956 T Berra in real OBC shape for 4 bucks. My new fun is finding a sleeve of 68s and going through them for the Milton Bradley's. Getting pretty good at it and picked up about 6 yesterday. Are the cars in that set from another set or were they just part of the game? I want to nominate Greg Tatich for the OBC-VCS. He is interested what we are doing. Rich Dingman may also support Greg and anyone who stopped by his table at the National (he is the one who partners with Mike McCann). We need to find some more dealers who are interested in the concept. It started out in the land of cardboard, about 1968. Carl Yaz was a baseball player who's name I knew. Found out from the back of one of his cards that he was originally from Long Island. That did it for me. I made my mom buy Yaz White Bread (anyone remember that? and if anyone has one of the club cards, I'd be interested). Became a fan of Rico and was ecstatic when they got Aparicio. Strat-o-matic also helped me keep tabs on some of my favorites like Doug Griffin, Ben Oglivie, and Cecil Cooper (His strat card sucked as a Red Sox LOL). I combined 2 of my favorite teams to create the Bostinnati Reds Sox. Made for a damn good team! And yes, in 1986 I pulled for the Mets, as they are always #1 in your scorebooks and #1 in your hearts! Their delivery tracking system absolutely sucks. I have had four cases, this month alone, of severely delayed packages. One, a certified letter took 4 weeks to travel from Providence, Rhode Island to the SF Bay Area (both destinations are in metropolitan, not rural regions) It bounced back and forth, and according to the tracking traveled about 9100 miles. All OBCers should consider sending every package with tracking, valued at over $50. I will say that ALL of the packages have eventually arrived, so far, but many are taking weeks instead of days to arrive at their destination. At least with tracking (insurance, certified, Express, Priority, etc) there is some accountability from the post office. When you're dealing with strangers , there is often uneasiness (Did the seller actuallyship it.... did the buyer get it and is trying to pull something). It adds to the financial cost of collecting, but will lower the stress level.... which is what the hobby is supposed to do...right? I didn't end up bidding because I already have the set and most of a second set. I am also not a big fan of trimmed cards, I prefer a more "honest"wear.
Were the cards not representative of the scans that were shown?

Power Seller), and will share a couple things. As far as "jumping the gun", the eBay system won't let a buyer file a claim prematurely, but if contact has already been made with the seller it doesn't hurt to wait a little longer, especially if you have tracking info that says where the package isin the mail system. I think the matter of slow delivery times is pretty much focused on certaingeographical or metropolitan areas. All of my eBay sales are shipped from western PA, using the eBay/PayPal system and labels, and my delivery times to anywhere in the U.S. have been normally running 3-4 days. (sales this month have been to CO, CA, CT, OH, GA, NY, FL, IN, TX, WA, and all of those were delivered in less than a week). The weirdest experience I've had was about 5-6 years ago when I shipped a package to Louisiana. Buyer contacted me and said it never arrived. I checked tracking which said it was at her local post office. I suggested she call that post office and ask them to look for it. She said she couldn't find the phone number for it. I looked up the number and calledthat office myself and asked if they would check to see if it was there. When the postmaster asked for the buyer's name, and I told him, he said thathe knew her, in fact her husband was a letter carrier in that post office. Must not have been very good communication between buyer and husband, I guess. If it's a fake it's a pretty good one.
Paper stock, gloss, depth of color are only true indicatorswhen you hold them in person.
I have at least 350 of these cards, they are my favorites. That Pfiester looks real from the scan, but once again the edges looks cut, like 3 of the 4 on Pfiester, lower right is real evident.
Most fake T205 are easy to see in my experience.
Are you keeping them?

So I took the offending t205 cards that I believed to be doctored reprints to Mark Rubin of American Legends in Scarsdale NY.  He seems to know his old cards and he thought that they were probably real or else very good fakes.  I=E2=99ve been in touch with Colbert Auctionsand they have been very nice and I believe that if they are fakes then he was fooled as well.

My issue has to do with the feel of the stock but a close comparison to my T205s shows no obvious difference. Here=E2=99s a link to one of the cards.

What do you guys think?

I got 2 cards from Colbert auctions. A Simmons and a Marquard. At first, I thought they were fakes because they didn't feel quite right. The seemed a bit 'slicker' to the touch. But after closer inspection, and comparison to a few cards I have, I believe at least the Simmons is real and probably theMarquard as well. I checked both under a 40X loop and the Simmons-to-others comparison was right on the money with regards to printing, texture, and paper stock. I believe the Marquard is as well, however the card is a bit more 'dirtier' than the Simmons. The only thing I have not been able to do is a black light test on them. As to being trimmed, I believe some had been trimmed at some point (but I doubt by the auction house), but I don't think all were trimmed. In fact theSimmons might be slightly larger than some of the graded cards I have. TheMarquard seems to be the same size as a number of other graded ones. (or PSA and SGC must have graded a LOT of trimmed T205s). One thing that was odd to me at first with the Marquard is that the INNER border of the card appears smaller than the 3 or 4 others I checked, UNTIL Icompared it to other NY Giants, then the inner border seemed to line rightup. It seems like there might be a little inner border variance to the T205s, but it could just as well be color/printing register issues. I DO know the Marquard has been 'altered' slightly in that someone completed the top part of the border on the back in pen, but you could see that in the scan. After looking at these in a bit detail today, I'm convinced the Simmons is real and believe the Marquard to be real as well, but will await the black light test (which would only provide proof positive of a fake and not that it's CC: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com To: robertfitts@verizon.net From: OBC-Ramblings-noreply@yahoogroups.com Date: Sat, 31 Oct 2015 20:09:51 -0400 Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] t-205 fakes - maybe not I also think the Pfiester looks real. There were a few like that, which I took into consideration when bidding.
