Newer Topps sets 1980-1992 relegated to some random closet. ================= To: Date: Sat, 6 Sep 2014 10:40:57 -0400 Subject: Long time; no talk From: "Chuck - personal" ..from me that is. He was a great human being and I am sure the entire Ursinus community is shocked and devastated. He really seemed to care about students and people, what a loss. From: Jim Thayer Hey guys, I've recently updated my HOF binders and I'd like to generate a swap if possible starting with Hank Aaron. I happen to have 2 extra 1969 Topps Aarons as shown in the pic. The one on the right (the better centered one) has no creases, just a worn upper lefthand corner (not bad though) with a small wax stain on the back. The one on the right (the very OC one) has better corners than the other one and no stains on the back. I'd feel comfortable calling that one EXMT(oc) if I had to. For my HOF binder, I currently need any Hank Aaron cards from 1952 to 1966 in any condition. (Yes, Aaron has a 1952 Indianapolis Clowns PC.) I have a lot more to trade than these two '69T Aarons, but they are available for the taking if needed. If you'd like one of them, but don't have an Aaron in return....that's totally fine! I have plenty of other needs! :) If you do have an Aaron I can use, but no desire to obtain one of these '69T Aarons from me, I have more I can trade. Honestly, I don't think there's one card from the 70's that hasn't been included in some RAOK over the last few years - and very few from the 60's for that matter, so you probably should put the rest of those sets on your wantlist too. The 50's sets can be a little more pricey, plus some years have both a Tops and Bowman set to collect. The prices on those cards tend to creep up even higher over the years, so you should probably add those NOW before you finish off the 60's and 70's sets and have nothing else to collect. Just a little helpful advice from someone who has some experience putting sets together with the help of OBC. You're welcome, Ken M In a message dated 9/11/2014 6:47:10 P.M. I would like to amend that quote attributed to Edmund Burke to read "that good people" do nothing! I am posting this to both Facebook and OBC (Old Baseball Cards). If this is seen as out of line feel free to unfriend me on Facebook and or terminate my membership in OBC. I strive to be a good person, that is my goal. I don't always reach that goal, but I will continue to try. Many of you know that I spent over 40 years working in a field where the issue of abuse is a major factor. We discovered that within our clientele "abused people abuse people!" Although retired, I still choose to do something. Hence this I am appalled, saddened and disappointed over the events of this past week wherein the NFL reinforced its' image as the face of the barbaric notion that Might Makes Right. Whether it is their long held position on verbal, psychological and physical abuse on and off the field or their response (or lack thereof) to domestic violence and child abuse. I am sad and angry with fans who proudly wear the jerseys of players who have been rightfully arrested and in some cases convicted of violent criminal acts. These fans are of course the minority, but it saddens and angers me none the less! Earlier this week I watched Jerry Richardson, the longtime owner of the Carolina Panthers, make what looked to be an impassionate speech as he accepted the Echo Foundation Award Against Violence in Charlotte.I am dubious regarding his sincerity when he pronounced "When it comes to domestic violence, my stance is not one of indifference." One of Richardson's best players on the Panthers is defensive end Greg Hardy, who was convicted of a domestic violence charge in May. Up until just this morning Greg Hardy was scheduled to play in today's game against the Lions. Ultimately, Greg Hardy was inactivated for the game. I watched a panel of commentators discuss the inactivation wherein a couple of the panelists applauded the decision. My opinion is that this decision was a case of doing the right thing for the wrong reasons. Call me skeptical but I believe that Carolina simply caved to pressure. Initially their stance was that due process dictated that they would not sit him because the conviction is being appealed and they would wait for that process to play itself out. As late as Friday Panther management was adamant that Hardy would play in today's game. What prompted the change since that statement? Many believe (me among them) that public and sponsor pressure prompted the change. A little side bar here is that the Lions practiced all week assuming that Hardy was going to play. If we were to give the Panthers organization the benefit of some doubt, it should be pointed out that all teams withhold information as long as they can about who will be active for a game, but this "business as usual" tactic flies in the face of Richardson's statement "my stance is not one of indifference!" This morning I watched a panel of commentators discuss the violence issue in the wake of the arrest of Ray Rice for Domestic Violence and Adrian Peterson's pending arrest for negligent injury to a child. I watched two ex-players and an ex-coach preach to us that they were whipped as children and it helped them become who they are today. Even giving that to be true 14% of all men in prison and 36% of women in prisonin the USA were abused as children. Children who experience child abuse & neglect are about 9 times more likely to become involved in criminalactivity. Is whipping abuse? Ask the child that was whipped, ask me if you will. I must say I'm somewhat biased against these commentators due to their backgrounds and or insensitive statements made about domestic violence. The ex-coach once alluded to the need for women to recognize their role in causing the abuse. In the interest of fair play I will not name the two ex-players and coach, although many of you know who these commentators are. I will mention the names of two other ex-players / commentators because I believe them to be good men who are doing something! Tom Jackson stands firmly behind his conviction that the NFL should sit players arrested for domestic and child abuse, even before convictions. He points out that for many businesses and law enforcement agencies a suspension with or without pay after such an arrest is standard operating procedure. Chris Carter is my personal hero these days as a result of his relentless campaign for reform within the NFL and it's need to take a very hard stance on the issue of violence against women and children. Both of these men have stood up to the other three commentators and a number of NFL officials and team owners who I perceive at the very least to be bullies! Good for them, we need more like them! Top ^ Angry Rant Ahead Sun Sep 14, 2014 10:42 am (PDT) . Posted by: "EEK" originaleek1@att.net ALL THAT IS NESESSARY FOR THE TRIUMPH OF EVIL IS THAT GOOD MEN DO NOTHING! I would like to amend that quote attributed to Edmund Burke to read "that good people" do nothing! I am posting this to both Facebook and OBC (Old Baseball Cards). If this is seen as out of line feel free to unfriend me on Facebookand or terminate my membership in OBC. I strive to be a good person, that is my goal. I don't always reach that goal, but I will continue to try. Many of you know that I spent over 40 years working in a field where the issue of abuseis major factor. We discovered that within our clientele "abused people abuse people!" Although retired, I still choose to do something. Hence this I am appalled, saddened and disappointed over the events of this past week wherein the NFL reinforced image as the face of the barbaric notion that Might Makes Right. Whether itis their long held position on verbal, psychological and physical abuse on andoff the field or their response (or lack thereof) to domestic violence and child abuse. I am sad and angry with fans who proudly wear the jerseys of playerswho have been rightfully arrested and in some cases convicted of violent criminal acts. These fans are of course the minority, but it saddens and angers me none the less! Earlier this week I watched Jerry Richardson, the longtime owner of the Carolina Panthers, make what looked to be an impassionate speech as he accepted the Echo Foundation Award Against Violence in Charlotte.I amdubious regarding his sincerity when he pronounced "When it comes to domestic violence, my stance is not one of indifference." One of Richardson's best players on the Panthers is defensive end Greg Hardy, who was convicted of a domestic violence charge in May. Up until just this morning Greg Hardy was scheduled to play in game against the Lions. Ultimately, Greg Hardy was inactivated for the game. watched a panel of commentators discuss the inactivation wherein a couple of the panelists applauded the decision. My opinion is that this decision was a case of doing the right thing for the wrong reasons. Call me skeptical but I believe that Carolina simply caved to pressure. Initially their stance was that due process dictated that they would not sit him because the conviction is being appealed and they would wait for that to play itself out. As late as Friday Panther management was adamant that Hardy would play in today's game. What prompted the change since that statement? Many believe (me among them) that public and sponsor pressure prompted the change. little side bar here is that the Lions practiced all week assuming that Hardy was going to play. If we were to give the Panthers organization the benefitof doubt, it should be pointed out that all teams withhold information as longas they can about who will be active for a game, but this "business as usual" tactic flies in the face of Richardson's statement "my stance is not one of indifference!" This morning I watched a panel of commentators discuss the violence issue in the wake of the arrest of Ray Rice for Domestic Violence and Adrian Peterson's pending arrest for negligent injury to a child. I must say I'm somewhat biased against these commentators due to their backgroundsand or insensitive statements made about domestic violence. Chris Carter is my personalhero these days as a result of his relentless campaign for reform within the NFL and it's need to take a very hard stance on the issue of violence against women and children. Both of these men stood up to the other three commentators and a number of NFL officials andteam owners who I perceive at the very least to be bullies! Good for them, we need more like them! Earl Kilbourn "we keep what we give away!" Reply to sender . Reply to group . Reply via Web Post . Messages (1) . Top ^ OBC- I am engaged! Sun Sep 14, 2014 5:13 pm (PDT) . Posted by: She said yes! Some still have that email addy. But Yahoo, in their infinite unwizdom decided to make a useless change. I would think that more mail servers than not, will allow you to add a "signature" to all emails and forwards/reply's. This might alleviate some of these issues. I know I have had similar problems when I'm looking through peoples want lists. Probably a good idea for everyone to put their names on their web lists also... Work has slowed down enough for me that I've gotten some time to organize everything and get it ready to post. However, this week saw me coming down with a cold that pretty much left me in bed drinking fluids when I wasn't picking up/dropping off Dominic at school. Next week is my parents' 50th wedding anniversary (same day as my birthday). For that, we've been planning a trip to Disney World for over a year now. I've spent quite a bit of time running around packing and picking up things at the last minute - as usual. In fact, I'm taking a five minute break from the chaos to type this note out. I'm driving overnight tonight to NC (14 hours or so) and then we're heading to Florida Sunday morning. The rest of the auction will have to be postponed (again, my apologies) until the first week in October. I still have the media guides from the National waiting to be mailed out also, so if you put in a claim for one, they haven't gotten lost in the mail or anything. I think everyone who replied to my waiver wire got at least one. I still have a bunch of cards on my desk that need to be thanked as well. Most of the envelopes haven't been opened (some of which because I know what's supposed to be inside, but mostly because I've been preoccupied with other things. I will get to everything upon my return. I know a bunch of you are chomping at the bit for the second half of the auction - and I want to get it up and running as much as you do, but it'll have to wait one more week. I'll say "Hi" to Mickey for all of you ;-) Ken M ================= To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com Date: Fri, 19 Sep 2014 22:21:24 -0400 Subject: The Postman Cometh again,,, From: Kent 41 in total - envelops, packages, and boxes went out today at the post office. From: Jimi Hey guys, I picked up an E98 Dooin recently and I'm making it available to the group. As a guy who was only the Cobb away from completing this set last year, Ican tell you that it's not a walk in the park to finish this set. There are some very tough commons and the Cobb and Wagner, even in low grade, may easily cost you $1,000+ each. The set of 30 cards also is available in 4 different colors (orange, red, blue, and green), so you could build a masterset for 120 cards. And I know someone who has been working on that project for a good 8 years, exclusively, and just finished it not long ago. The Dooin that I am offering you is one of the easiest commons and it is a green background. It's in low grade, but there is no writing or tears, andthe back is completely legible. This might be good for someone working on the set or needs one for their type-card set. IF I "OWE YOU", then I'll gladly send the card your way. Guys like Kent Goto, Lynn Miller, and Guru have sent multiple packages to me, so if anyone of those guys needs it then sweet. Regardless, please let me know if you "need it". In addition, I have a PSA 1 Evers E98, too. It came in the mail with a damaged holder thanks to the way it was packaged. The card is fine though. Iwould have interest in trading this one away, especially if someone has anEvers from T205, T206, or something tougher. I might let it go for another prewar HOFer, too. OK, long e-mail. A buddy of mine is coming up to trade cards at my house tonight (first time I've traded at MY house since I was a kid!) and he needs a Henderson RC to finish his set, and since he's not nearly as active as me, I pulled mine from one of my sets to give to him. So.....I can use another to fill it's spot. My HOF binder is in need of a few, too. Now that I've retruned from this year's vacation, I've started to look into prices for next year - and what a shocker. Flights have gone through the roof. The best deal I can find (one that includes flight + 6 nights in a hotel - Tuesday to Monday - that offers a free airport shuttle which would allow me a certain amount of travel freedom as I don't drive) will cost about $1700. Wow. That really caught me by surprise. Unless something unexpected comes up in the next few months, I'm going to have to think long and hard about whether or not I can manage that AND be able to have enough spending money to make it worth my while.
