As you all recall Over the past year my father was diagnosed with cancer, with several treatments and an major operation my father was deemed cancer free. Knock on wood dad is still cancer free and doing well. As the spring rolled in we noticed my son Tony was doing some odd things, not he always had little habits (tics) but they were coming out real bad this spring. We talked to him and told him to stop and he said he couldnt. webrought him to a Dr and he was diagnosed with tourette's syndrome. Tony was crushed. We told him not to let this slow him down, and he continued to play baseball at a high level, actually he played at a higher level and became a better ball player and he hit the field every day to get better and not let this slow him down. Most of our free time is spent with tony, going on small trips to get him away from everyday life playing baseball and watching baseball games. (most of our trips are baseball related) We went to a few Games on the road, Cooperstown, we even went to the Jersey shore with friends and most of the timewas spent on the beach playing baseball. It was a rough but GREAT summer. Again i apologize for not sending out thank you notes, and i know off of the top of my head we received 4 packages both myself and Tony. John Scott Gray and I normally have a contest to see who can cards to the most sets. Each year it gets harder to find hits to sets. Sets get completed or get down to the expensive shortprints, superstars, and high numbers. Considering I am working on every pre-1980 sports set, there should be lots of sets to hit. This year I went needing 1 card to finish 25 different sets. I left needing 1 card to finish27 different sets! This was accomplished by finishing 2 sets (1947 Remar Bread and 1962 Stat Back Exhibits), but getting 4 more sets down to 1 (highlighted by 1941 Playball and 1952 Bowman FB large). These were among 93 different sets I got hits to. Highlights included1919 W-514-1 Cobb, 1941 Playball DiMaggio, 1951 Topps Connie Mack All Time All Stars Ruth, 1952 Bowman FB Large #144 (most expensive card in the set set), 1961 Topps Stamp panel with Mantle, 1960 Bazooka Mantle, among many other cards and HOFers. This year's National was strange in that in that some of the usual ringleaders were either not there (Morganti) or were busy with significant others (Sal). So although we did the usual OBC dinner on Thursday nite at Mother Hubbards, and a bunch of guys went to the Cubs game on Friday (I passedon the game this year), but did make my first Net 54 dinner. The OBCswap also was not attended by everyone. While still the highlight ofthe week for me, the swap has lost some of its luster over time. Thevast majority of guys attending the swap have advanced collections making it tough to get hits at the swap. I think there may have been more hits to FB & HCKY lists than to BB lists at the swap, if we excludeWes. Even though the show tends to return to the same cities over and over again, we should think about a way to shake things up for future shows. I hope we can convince others tojoin us at future shows. If we have a bunch of people liking us already I think it will help our position with the publisher. I will be doing the Diamond Stars web site next. After that I plan to start a blog =96 about how Diamond Stars came about. The working title is: The Healing Power Of Cardboard... Jim and I received around 25 turn downs form the big guys (two of which were complementary about the book) mostly we weren=E2=99t on their lists, or they didn=E2=99t think they could sell it or because Jim and I didn=E2=99t have a big enough Platform. I wanted to tell them that I knew a bunch of guys who already built me a huge platform =E2=93 big enough to write a book from - but I didn=E2=99t... So =E2=93 I am on the way to the next step. Signed the contract a few days ago and have been answering the publisher=E2=99s questions =E2=93 about the authors (me and Jim), info for the cover design and etc., etc.. Once that is finished we will be waiting for an editor and thenwe will be busy again for a time and then more waiting until Diamond Starsis put out as an e-book and shortly after in print... All that to say that it will probably be a year before Diamond Stars will be available to the general public... That is good in a real sense for me =E2=93 since our publisher =E2=93Keith Publications =E2=93 is a small house, Jim and I are responsible for the majority of the publicizing and marketing for the book. This gives us time to do all the things I said I would start when we got an agentin May and didn=E2=99t get around to. This time I have to do morethan Toward that end =E2=93 I spent the last couple of nights setting up a Facebook page for the book. I have never been on Facebook. My only exposure to Social Media is OBC and e-mail. So, I was asking Denicehow to do stuff but mostly figured it out on my own. I put up some photos and the pitch for our story and then started e-mailing some of my contacts from the past. Individual e-mails and not emptying the address book and assaulting everyone. I did that by accident when I was responding to a friend request on Linked In and learned my lesson. (sorry if yougot spammed in that event...) So I am sending you this to share my wonderful news and also pass on the link to my Facebook Book Page if you want to take a look: Remember =E2=93 Marc Peter Reyna is my birth name and also pen name... If you do take a look I would appreciate any feedback you might be willing to provide. I know that several of you have built web sites and publicized yourself and things and written books and articles =E2=93 so I would covet any advise you might be willing to pass along... Also, it seems to me that the more people who visit our web sites and respond in some way, the better it will be for us when we are going through the process of the cover design, finalizing the title and final edit. If we have a bunch of people liking us already I think it will help our position with the publisher. I will be doing the Diamond Stars web site next. After that I plan to start a blog =E2=93 about how Diamond Stars came about. The working title is: The Healing Power Of Cardboard... Look forward to hearing from you =E2=93 and thank you all for your part in making this happen and continued participation on this journey... The atmosphere was great. No Giant Nascar and Beanie Displays....No LOUD microphone announcements....No Autograph guests/lines/sales... The organizers are great...If you have not met them, do so. I cannot wait! Looking forward to seeing the usual gang there and meeting some new collecting friends. -----Original Message----- From: Patrick Prickett To: Mike Mackie ; OBC Ramblings ; VCT Mailing List Sent: Tue, Sep 24, 2013 6:43 pm Subject: [OBC-Ramblings] October 5th show in Culver City Hi All, For anyone in the LA area ... just wanted to make sure you know about the October 5th show in Culver City. This is the second show, and the first one was pretty awesome. (And this show is the reason I joined OBC since I met John Stamper, Joshua Levine andGary Beard and they convinced me to join). It's not quite the Nationals (with only 40-50 dealers) but the amount of vintage cards and memoribilia blew me away. Some very cool stuff. Very friendly show as well and I found the prices pretty reasonable. The show is organized by three long-time collectors (Jason Miller, AnthonyNex, and Adam Warshaw) who have partnered to bring together a good, old-fashioned local card show. The show will take place on Saturday, October 5th, 2013 at the Veterans Memorial Auditorium, 4117 Overland Avenue, Culver City, California from 10:00-5:00. Admission and parking are free. For more information, please visit the show web site: http://www.socalsportscollectors.com I will be setting up a table (next to Mark Mcrea) so if you're coming please let me know and swing by and say Hi (and I would be interested to know inadvance if you are coming ...)! Hope you can make it! ================= Date: Thu, 26 Sep 2013 03:08:32 -0400 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: "wwesmyster2@aol.com" Subject: DeanBay ================= Date: 26 Sep 2013 06:52:36 -0700 To: From: Subject: Stepping back ================= To: "obc-ramblings@yahoogroups.com" Date: Thu, 26 Sep 2013 10:27:24 -0400 From: Mac Wubben Subject: COMC dealer Seems a bit trivial now...but COMC dealer KEITH6900 has some pretty good deals on early bowmans...under $2 a card. A few weeks ago, I began having headaches and having some problems with light sensitivity. After a week of no changes, I made an appointment with my doctor. She thoughtit was a migraine, but wanted to have an MRI to make sure it wasn't a brain aneurysm. They had to do some blood work before the MRI. The blood work indicated that my white blood cells were super high and my platelets super low- a indication of leukemia. The doctor ordered me to the hospital right away. Further tests revealed that it looked like leukemia and they transferred me to Rush University Medical Center here in Chicago. That was Saturday night. On Monday, the performed a bone marrow biopsy. When those results come through, the doctors will be able to set a plan in motion to start some chemo. It has been a real shock. I'm not sure why this has happened, but I'm focused on beating this. My wife has set up a website at caringbridge.org. Just search my name And you should find it. She has been postingupdates there. Prayers and good thoughts are always accepted. I will beat this, and when I do, I will get back to sending out some cardboard. But for now, I will have to be a bit quiet. > TJ ================= Date: Sat, 28 Sep 2013 14:03:58 -0700 (PDT) To: "OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com" From: mark zentkovich Subject: one more Z today one more Zentkovich in the world today....my son got married today, big day for all. so I gain a daughter and a new title- father in law!
