================= Date: Thu, 1 Aug 2013 00:24:07 -0700 (PDT) To: Tigers List , From: Glenn Codere Subject: MLB TV Hey all, As some of you may recall, I sent a message out a few months back saying that ESPN America (the satellite/cablechannel that provides MLB coverage here in the UK) was being discontinued later in the year. Well, that day hasnow come so I've had to come up with an alternate plan. Yesterday, I received an email from mlb.com to say that MLB TV is now available for the remainder of the season at $49.99. Since I now have an internet connected "Smart TV" I figured I may as well give it a shot and see what the quality is like. Well color me amazed! After all the issues I'd been hit with over the yearswith Gameday Audio (my good buddy Roger on the Tigers list could also wax lyrical about this!!) I figured something was bound to go wrong. Hoever, I downloaded that appropriate apps, paid the fee, followed the instructions......and it all worked brilliantly!! Terrific HD quality on my TV, and I canalso log in to watch on my Samsung Galaxy Notephone and my Tab 10.1 tablet. I'm hoping that MLB will continue to extend its range of "classic" games that are available to watch, although I haven't yet figured out how to accessthose on my TV yet. I'll get there though! Ain't technologoly wunnerful? My hotel picked me up at the airport, and delivered me to my hotel in quick order. After getting settled in I texted Mac and Sal, they are already at the show. I am about three miles from the convention center and about a ten minute walk from the train station, but the hotel has two shuttle vans running around and I get a lift right to the front door of the show. I walk in and meet Sal (and his girlfriend) Kent and George Vrechek and they greeted me in the standard fashion handing me some cards! We end up in some VIP kick-off room with free food, and since I am pretty hungry I dig right in. Had a piece of deep dish pizza and a diet pepsi, then a beef slider which was so good I went back for two more! We got into the show at 3:30, and it seemed quite busy. Ran into Steve Rittenburg, Taylor Shock, and Mac Wubben too, and we all passed cards to each other and visited for a little bit. Tried to make a complete sweep of the show floor, and I almost made it, but had to hurry through the last couple isles. To say there is an abundance of baseball cards around well I'm sure you can imagine! Mac gave me a couple table numbers that had the 1933 Ruth card my son is looking for, but didn't really see a stand out bargain. I think today will be the day I either buy it or just pass on it as my son will be off work and I can talk to him on the phone. I bought some hits to my "tall-boy" sets '64 hockey, '65 football (including the last card in the set a checklist), and basketball too. Bought a nice stack of needed 1974 Topps basketball at .40c each. Spent some time at Uncle Dicks table and did some nice damage to my Topps hockey needs including twelve hits 1954 Topps hockey. Spent the most money on a 1962 Post football Mike Ditka rookie SP it had a $65 price tag on it, I think I got it for $60 with the dealer through in the #1 card for the 1957 Topps hockey set. Bought four needed 1948 Bowman football cards for $2 each, and also found eight 1972 Topps football high numbers at $5 each (if you dont collect football cards, these are tough). I also bought a couple cards I don't really need 1965 Topps Mets team card hi number and 1965 Topps Tug McGraw hi number rookie for $3 each which I thought was pretty good. Baseball cards especially high numbers seem to be cheap, and I might have to re-load my doubles box. 1959 Topps baseball hi numbers are all over for $2 each. Rather than spend so much time looking at my wantlist, its more fun to dig through the bargain bins and find these discounted cards that are cheap. I almost forgot I finished my orange colored 1977 Star War cards set with 15 or so cards from this big box of non sports so I was happy about that (and the .25c each price too). Towards the end of the show I met up with Nick Pelletier and Spike Glidden, and Bob Donaldson, and caught up with them next to Kurt Turdots table. The "sneak-peak" show opening shut down at 8PM, and we made our way to Chilis for dinner with the whole gang. Once again I proved how inept I am with baseball trivia, I dont think I answered one question right. Somehow Taylor drove me back to my hotel which is a miracle since I not only did not know where I was or where I was going, I didn't know the address of my hotel, and then I found out I had the wrong name for my hotel too! Having thecards in order makes it so much easier and before long I have done some serious damage to my 1971-1975 Topps basketball lists. Next stop a table that features only hockey and I go through their entire inventory of off grade Topps hockey with good results including both 1967 Topps hockey checklist cards and some great conversation with the owners. I am off to a great start! As you know I have $1,000 of my sons money in my pocket to purchase for hima 1933 GOUDEY #144 Babe Ruth but only saw two or three PSA 1 or 2 types and they did not seem to be a bargain to me. I'll keep my eyes open but it would appear that I am going to fall short in this quest. I saw no ungraded examples. Purchased a 1969-70 Topps basketball card of Celtic Don Nelson for $6 whichwas the final card needed to complete my set that I started at last years national Met TJ and we hung out for a little bit and also ran into ex(?) OBCer Brian Dywer. I also talked with Sal and his girlfriend (not Kent) and told her to disregard any rumors that Sal had taken up with another lady. A rumor that Glenn has been fanning:) FIND NUMBER ONE: Certain dealer had promised me to bring a box of beat up cards and I stopped by his table and he delivered! This odd shaped box filled with off grade cards from the 50s many 51 Bowman and quite a few 1955 Topps All American football. 2 1955 Topps Warren Spahn, 64 Whitey Ford and a 1959 Topps Stan Musial some non sports cards too Bowman Jets Rockets and Spacemen and "The Jethro" from the Beverly Hillbillies set. A few random 52 and 53 Topps and a good size stack of 54 and 55 Topps and maybe ten or more 1955 Bowman umpire cards. It was no sewer find, but I really had a ball looking through all of these cards and I didn't tell you about the best card inthe box a 1952 Topps Yogi Berra that is just beautiful except for a small hole if the upper left corner. Of course most of these cards are duplicatesor upgrades for me including that Berra, so this should help me get back in the trading action when I get home. Opps forgot there was a T206 and one of those Hassan "triple folders" cards (missing one panel) in there too. This wasn't anything close to the "Sewer Find" last year, and I paid $180 forthe box. But I think it was fairly priced. I also purchased the last card I needed to complete my 1970 Topps football set, Calvin Hill RC. Again a set started at last years national. I think I broke my record when I paid the most money for a single card everI bought a real nice 1948 Bowman Yogi Berra which set me back $120 I am really closing in on this set, and I knocked off a couple others from this set too including the Bobby Thompson RC. Ran into OBC members all day long including Mark T. Mike R. and Ron P. who arrived right around lunch time. FIND NUMBER TWO: I am looking over this dealers stuff, when another collector comes up and pulls out a big stack of 1962 Topps Civil War News (including a marked checklist), Combat cards from the 60s, and a big stack of JFK non sports. I am totally floored when the collector accepts the dealers offer of $25 and after the collector leaves the table I purchase the whole lotfrom the dealer for $45. So dealer makes a quick $20, and for the first time ever I have a wantlist for a second set of cards. I already have one Civil War News set, but now I am 13 cards away from my second set:) By 5PM my dogs (feet) are barking, and I exit the show, purchase a vente starbucks coffee, find a plug for my phone, and wait for the others to leave the show. Then as a group we get on the train and enjoy a great meal in a downtown Chicago sports bar. Very hipster area skinny kids wearing V neck tee shirts and let me tell you young or old the ladies could all be models! Thanks to Taylor for again giving me a lift from the train station back to my hotel. I am the first to admit I am TERRIBLE with directions hard to believe I was an air traffic controller for 34 years. I spent a couple of hours last night updating my wantlists and didn't get to sleep until after 1AM I am so tired. I brought my gym clothes but there is no time to visit the fitness center when Guru has a card show to attend! It's 6:40 AM and I am enjoying my in room coffee. Larry Gersbach is meetingme here at my hotel at 9AM and he is crashing here tonight. We will off load his gear and then head right to day three of the show. Then at noon MarkTalbot and I are jumping on the train and headed for Wrigley field for an afternoon ballgame Cubs VS Dodgers this is a big dream come true for me. ================= Date: Fri, 2 Aug 2013 05:23:08 -0700 (PDT) To: "larrytipton@windstream.net" , From: Glenn Codere Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] Day 2 National Report HA! I am totally floored when the collector accepts the dealers offer of $25 and after the collector leaves the table I purchase the whole lot from the dealer for $45. I spent a couple of hours last night updating my wantlists and didn't get to sleep until after 1AM I am so tired. I brought my gym clothes but there is no time to visit the fitness center when Guru has a card show to attend! It's 6:40 AM and I am enjoying my in room coffee. We dropped off his gear, grabbed a couple of apples for our lunch, and caught the hotel shuttle to the show. We arrived right at the opening bell and Steve Rittenburg got us in. I have only 2.5 hours to "shop" before I'm off to the Cubs game. Spent most of my time at a dealers table who seemed really glad to have me as a customer, everything he sold me he discounted from 1/3 to 1/2 off his listed price that's fine with me. Picked up 27 Orange Davy Crockett cards and 42 Green Davy Crocett cards for $1 or $2 each. I am building a 1962 Fleer basketball set and anytime I see cards for $4 or so I buy them. Well this dealer had EX-MT examples for $6 each I bought all nine cards he had. 1956 Topps basket ball, and a big stack of non sports cards for .50c each including some FIREFIGHTERS cards that I am now colecting I guess:) And bought a 1970 Wilt Chamberlain card in EX-MT for $20 I am really closing in on this set! Also continued to pound my early 70s basketball set. Spent some OBC quality time with Bob Reed digging through .50c boxes which was another highlight to my day. Besides meeting Gersh today I met Tom Housley, Carl Mura and Mike Mackie. I watched Mike Rich work a deal for a rare SP in the 1962 Post football set, and this dealer had a couple of the SPs I need for the 1962 Post set as well. I purchased three cards from him I needed including one of the four toughest cards #193 Joe Krakoski total price $35 I am down to needing ten cards to complete this set! Funny the dealer told me at that price he would have to skip lunch:) Well you know what a compassionate guy I am, and I felt kind of sorry this dealer is going to have to miss lunch. So I went back to his table and he had one of the other SPs there and I offered him $20 for that card and told him then he could now buy lunch! Basically he told me he was going on a diet:) in other words he did not accept my offer. Anyway I made some good progress today, but now Sal and his girlfriend (not Kent) COMMA Kent and his family, Bob Reed and Mark Talbot get on the train to Wrigley Field for the ballbame. We took the advice of some guy on the train and got off on Addison Street on the blue line and started walking. Well after about 20minutes I looked at my phones GPS and it said we had 2.8 miles to walk! So we jumped on a bus that was pointed in the right direction and it took us right to the ballpark. I can remember as a kid listening to Vin Sculley broadcasting games from Wrigley Field, it seemed SO far away. And here I am! I walked around the ballpark, visited with the guys, ate food, and enjoyed a real great game. After the game we walked around Wrigley Field one more time, jumped on a bus which took us right to the train station, and back to our vehicles where we had stowed our gear. I had a nice dinner with Mark Talbot, and I made my way back to my room. Visited a little with Gersh and then updated my wantlists and did not have any trouble falling asleep:) ================= To: Date: Sat, 3 Aug 2013 12:36:02 +0000 From: Subject: 1973 Johnny pro dupes Hello all Have a weaver and Pena up for grabs. First purchase was a big stack of 50s non sport in very nice condition for .50c each. Then to a table that has become one of our favorite this weekendto a dealer who understands us and likes to see our OBC hats around his table. He told someone (I think George Vrechek) that he had these "bulk" boxes below his table for .10c each. George finds a chair and starts picking hockey cards and I ask if I can join in on the fun. So I do and see a couple late 50s basebal cards, and a good amount of 1962 64 65 66 baseball too. SoI ask our new dealer friend if I purchase a big stack will he do better than .10c each? George says I can have at it so of course I do, next thing you know I have like 1,800 cards mostly pre 69 baseball some mid 70s hockey and basketball too. Of course this weighs about 30 pounds and no way am I going to carry this around all day, so I locate Gersh, get the keys to his vehicle, and lug these bad boys off to the car. Mac was nice enough to go find said table and texted me right back. So I walk over to said table and bought every T206 the guy had if it was $15 or less, and this amounted to 34 cards including Chance from tinker-evers-chance and dealer gave me a discount on top of that. Later in the show I bought two more T206 and one T205, I have alot to learn in the arena of tobacco cards. So I ask for the 1976 binder, and I can flip right to the numbers I need, sure maybe I paid a slight amount more thanI would have, but it is SO worth it! There is a Starbucks right outside the show, so I took a nice break with a vente coffee and a snack that Gersh gave me, and was able to plug my phone in. Now my phone and me are recharged for the last couple hours at the show. Picked up most of the cards I needed to complete the 70-71 tall boy basketball set Jerry West and John Havlicek each $15 one biggie left Maravich RC, found one with a heavy crease right through the middle for $25 not to many of these cards at the show. I keep my wantlist on my phone but do not update until I am back here. So I thought I might have completed this set, but still need two commons which I hope to secure today. Last deal of the day nice lady offers me a chair in front of their bargain box I can't refuse:) Filled with '57 Topps basketball priced at $30 each but half off also 1962 Fleer basketball priced the same. So I utilize the technique I learned from some auction show it's called bundeling, and I pick out 23 needed cards. Dealer quotes me $300 and we haggle a bit I want to bealot closer to $10 a card and we can't strike a deal. Rittenburg comes over to coach me some, and his soulution is to get up, kind of like what they tell you to do when purchasing a new car ha ha! Lady was real nice she understood and I also thanked her for letting me sit down. Side note during theSAWP Mike Rich told me he is now this ladys messenger, and she will do $10each on the cards, but greedy guru is thinking more like $7-$8 a card whatis happening to me? Side note heard a few stories that the dealers are experiencing quite a bitof theft at this show including I think 3 1952 Topps Mantles stolen. Sitting here thinking about it, if I was a thief and a crook it would be worth the price of admission. Dealers are understaffed and it gets busy at their tables to hard to watch everything. Too bad... We closed the show at 6PM and then made our way over to the SWAP. I spent most of my time in Steves non sport box (thank you Steve) plus he gave me a checklist card for the tall boy 65 football set I needed. Answer "If you buy 1,000 cards I'll sell them to you for .5c each". As a little side note later TJ was belly up in the "bulk" box getting his 70s football starter sets, and John Scott Gray was super excited to see hundreds of non sports Dallas cards in there Mac Wubben had seen some off condition T206 cards for $10 each, and I askedhim where is said table? Mac was nice enough to go find said table and texted me right back. So I walk over to said table and bought every T206 the guy had if it was $15 or less, and this amounted to 34 cards including Chance from tinker-evers-chance and dealer gave me a discount on top of that. Later in the show I bought two more T206 and one T205, I have alot to learn in the arena of tobacco cards. I completed sets both of the 1974 red baseball checklist cards with either * or ** and just wanted to thank the OBCer who got me started on those * or** Lord help me:) Also completed the 1978 football set with two cards TonyDorsett and a Walter Payton highlight card. The dealer I bought these fromis well known to OBCers including me, but I do not know his name. With me only needing six or ten cards in the whole set, I can't dig through bargainboxes looking for one of the cards I need to complete the set. This dealerhas his cards organized in binders the cards are also in a soft sleeves and already priced it was AWESOME. Dealer quotes me $300 and we haggle a bit I want to be alot closer to $10 a card and we can't strike a deal. Rittenburg comes overto coach me some, and his soulution is to get up, kind of like what they tell you to do when purchasing a new car ha ha! Lady was real nice she understood and I also thanked her for letting me sit down. Side note during the SAWP Mike Rich told me he is now this ladys messenger, and she will do $10 each on the cards, but greedy guru is thinking more like $7-$8 a card what is happening to me? Side note heard a few stories that the dealers are experiencing quite a bitof theft at this show including I think 3 1952 Topps Mantles stolen. Sitting here thinking about it, if I was a thief and a crook it would be worth the price of admission. Dealers are understaffed and it gets busy at their tables to hard to watch everything. Too bad... We closed the show at 6PM and then made our way over to the SWAP. I spent most of my time in Steves non sport box (thank you Steve) plus he gave me a checklist card for the tall boy 65 football set I needed. John Scott Gray gave me a nice stack of Red Man and he helped me pick the ones I needed by calling out the year and name and me saying either yes or no. Also thanks toJSGs wife who helps me read the numbers on the back of those basketball cards that I cant read even with a magnifying glass! Mike Rich was very generous with his Topps hockey extras, and I got a couple of the big names to help me along. He also played this game giving out his 1968 and 1969 hockey. He calls out a number, and either George or I will call out "YES" or "NO" and most of the time we both say yes hahaha! Was happy to see that some of the .5c cards from my "bulk box" find helped some OBCers. The pizza and diet cokes were consumed, goodbyes said to a fewfriends, and back to the hotel room it's 11PM. Spike crashed here last night, and he just left to catch the free shuttle to ORD. I feel like I have been in a fight, I am sore from head to toe, and my brain is in a kind of a daze. In other words, I am ready for the final day of the show! No virus found in this message. As always, the best part is getting tospend some time with the OBC guys. Spike and I both arrived early on Wednesday, checked out the hotel room andtook advantage of some dealer badges to get in early. Well, that was the plan anyways...Spike had to coax an extra badge out of them as our dealer connection seemed a bit flaky. Everything worked out all right though...andwe got in with no problem. Met a few of the guys who were there early...started unloading and collecting cards as I came across OBC'ers. Always great to see everyone after a year. Not a ton of finds on wednesday....pickedup an E92 Shean with a non-sport back...which was pretty neat,. I also snagged a couple of Venezuelans...a 67 Killebrew and a 66 Killebrew. Followed up that with a dinner at Chilis. Thursday brought more of the same...more OBC'ers, more handshakes, more cards. I grabbed a big selection of P2's that I needed... 13 hits in all, including the large letter Ty Cobb. Only 35 more to go on that set. I also hit my T3 list with Lord...only 9 left there (including 3 variations). As always, I bought a few things that weren't on the list...e98 Tinker and 13 mid 20's exhibits including Wally Pipp. I was treated to lunch by Nick P, so we got to catch up a bit, which was great. My wife Alesia flew...so I headed out of the show a bit early, met her at the airport and then headed toWrigleyville where we were staying. Checked in quick, then had a great dinner and Chez moi. Friday was gameday...we headed out early to meet a local friend at the Goose Island Brewery. Drank some great beers, then headed off to Wrigley. Theweather was gorgeous...but the cubs weren't. I had to bail a little earlyto make the net 54 dinner. Free drinks, free food, good company...the speakers were a bit underwhelming, but there were a few interesting stories. I got to hang with a few OBC'ers and meet a couple net 54 guys too...but I was feeling terrible, so I had to bail early. I had the pleasure of heading back to the hotel and meeting up with the lalapalooza crowd, so it took forever to get back to the hotel. Sat...left Alesia behind to relax and get a massage, while I headed off to the show. Bought a Bad Bill Dahlen T3 that upgrades the first T3 I ever acquired, a t216 murphy...and a few odds and ends. Spike and I headed to five roses...had some great food and conversation...dashing out to meet up with Alesia (with Spike graciously picking up the check). I met up with Alesia, we checked in to the new hotel...and headed back to the show. This was Alesia's very first card show...so obviously it was a little crazy and overwhelming. She temporarily took leave of her senses and bought a t216 Bender for me...what a great gal! We wandered around a bit...tried really hard to work a trade for a t207 works, but it wasn't happening. Oh well. We hitched a ride to the swap with JSG and his wife (Jo). The cards were wheeled in, thrown around, traded...amidst great conversation and pizza. Alesia was kept happy with a little bit of wine and some pizza...and thankfully Jowas there too. It's always such a great time...I wish the rest of you could have been there. Just got back home...still recovering. OBC dropped a ton of cards on me...and they're all very much appreciated...though they're all mixed up now. Thanks again everyone...for badges, transportation, cards, swap organizing,lunches...and mostly for the company. Looking forward to Cleveland! ================= Date: Sun, 4 Aug 2013 18:16:47 -0400 To: obc ramblings , national From: Matthew Glidden Subject: Spike's OBC National photo highlights 2013 Prior to my regular show wrap-up, enjoy these shots of the show, swap and Friday's baseball game. Today is discount day, he has these tupperware bins and boxes filled with stuff .50c $1 $2 and you can spend all day digging through his stuff. One thing I learned this week, I am willing to pay a little more if a dealers card inventory is in order, I can't dig through hundreds ofout of order cards looking for one single number. Anyway I bought a nice stack of 60 61 62 Post cereal baseball cards (which I am now collecting), and also some non sports 70s Fleer world series, wildest days and plays etc etc. One of my goals this week was to finish off a couple of 70s football and basketball sets and today is the day! Most of the cards I bought at Paul Korst table I dont know where he is from. Of course he loves OBCers, and he called me by my name (Larry not Guru haha) I dont know why that feels special, but it just does, maybe that makes me feel important I dont know. He has his cards in binders 1977 Topps basketball, 1964 Topps baseball etc etc andeach card is in order and a sticker price on the outside of the pocket. Hegives you a pen and a piece of paper, and as you pull cards from the binders you write down the price. After you are done shopping he looks at the cards and the paper where you wrote down the prices, and after getting a total he knocks at least 10% off OBC discount. I think after the show or maybe during the event, he just goes through his binders and refills the empty holes with the back up cards he has. Several times I saw a $20 card in a binder and I would ask him if he had a cheaper one and he came through more than once. He would hand me the cheaper one and I would leave the other card in the binder. Anyway I spent alot of time explaining this hahaha but I likehis system! Plus LOTS of chairs aroung his table so a guy can sit down! Finished 1973-74 Topps basketball buying several incl Wilt and Oscar Robertson (somehow ended up with a double of Bid O)! Finished 1979 Topps football buying sevaral incl Walter Payton, Tony Dorsett, and Earl Campbell RC! Finished 1977 Topps football buying several incl Steve Largent RC, Walter Payton, Harry Carson RC! Finished 1976 Topps football buying several incl Staubach, Too Tall Jones RC, and Randy White RC. (surprised I didn't need the Walter Payton RC buy not on my wantlist so I must have it back home I can't remember?)! Finished 1975 Topps football buying several incl Stabler, Joe Theismann RC,Mel Blount RC, and Dan Fouts RC! Finished 1974 Topps football buying several incl Franco Harris, Butkus, Bradshaw, and Staubach! Finished 1973 Topps football buying several incl Ken Stabler RC, Jack Ham RC, Franco Harris RC, Bradshaw, Tarkenton, Staubach, and OJ! Also purchased a 1980 Topps Walter Payton leaving me just the Joe Montana RC left to complete this set. So I wish I could tell you I bought each these cards for $3 each but I can't:) Many of these cards are in the $10-$25 range and I have the ca$h so I pulled the trigger. I don't remember exactly what my total bill was at Paulstable but it was around $500. I started these sets at last years convention and completed them at this years convention that's kind of cool. As many of you have noticed, I have been really active this year with OBC, and I think collecting these football cards has helped get me back into it. Thanks to all OBCers who helped me this past year finishing off all these sets! Still four more hours until the show closes, let's get after it Guru! Now I am two cards away from completing 1970-71 Topps tall boy basketball.I need #104 Bill Hosket (who?) RC, and #171 playoff card with Jerry West. I found the playoff card for $6 at another dealer who I like (can't remember his name) his cards are orderly too:) and I saw several Hosket RC but $8 seemed like to much to pay. Then at some random table I found old Hosket with "other side clean" written in ink on the back in a binder for .50c and completed another set! I still had one follow up stop to make, back to the lady who told Mike Richyesterday that she would accept my offer of $10 each for those 57-58 Toppsbasketball cards. Well today is Sunday and in my eyes today is discount day! So I tell her I need to be closer to $6 each and she says go ahead and pull the cards and we will see. So I pull out twenty 57-58 Topps basketball (in nice shape too) and also two needed 61-62 Fleer basketball cards. I said $130 (six each) she countered but wasn't even close to my number. So I said thanks and pushed my chair back to leave and I guess she had a change ofheart because she took my cash. I also bought thirteen mouse damaged T206 for $5 eah and a mouse chewed T206 Chief Bender for $10, two with Polar Bear backs my first. I have much to learn about these T cards but I do know I think they are so neat! Now I am going to tell you all something very strange that happened to me. I am walking around to different tables when all of a sudden I had this weird feeling come over me, and I started thinking about Chris Stufflestreet. I can't explain this, and I had not thought of Chris in months. I texted all the guys here at the show when this happened. I don't know what else to say about this. An hour later I get a text from Steve R 80% off at table 714! Bought thirteen 1958 Topps baseball .10c each bought forty one 1972 Topps high numbers for .20c each, started Planet of the Apes, Six Million Dollar Man, Topps Scoops starter sets for me .10c each. Should have bought more but I have to get all these cards home and I am not checking a bag! Steve R and I took the shuttle to his hotel and got in his car we drove to Dennys for dinner. OK I lied we ate at Hooters:) I am not leaving town until Wednesday AM as this is my first trip to Chicago. This morning I am taking the train into town and meeting George Vrechek and he is going to give me a tour of Chicago via bicycle! So I am very excited about this. Don't exactly have a plan for Tuesday but know George will give me sme good tips. (It's a long one) How do you describe this to someone who never heard of OBC or how we operate? I found myself answering what we do to a number of dealers. I'll just ramble around (as I tend to do) about my week in Chicago. First thought is that Nick Pelletier did NOT suffer from the sophomore jinx. As you have read, Nick not only was handing out cards to everyone, but HOLY HELL what set of names that he passed around. I was lucky enough to be included in that list, as I got a 66 Woody NAMATH. Did not even have this card on my radar for the show. Super thanks to Nick for that one. Guru pretty much did a terrific job of capturing what was going on each day at the National. I caught up with my card partner Kent, as we always do and did a great tour of some of the great attractions in Chicago. Notice (Glenn) I said CARD partner! One of my highlights was standing in line to get Milt Pappas autograph. He asked Amanda if she was having a good time at the show, she said yes. Then he turned to me and said "He made you come here, didn't he?" She was a real trooper throughout the show. Found a lot more wives/significant others are coming each year. Chicago is so worth it. Jo (JSG's better half) decided that the gals should form their own group next year. I think they will be collecting things from all the local stores and malls LOL. As always, the coolest part is catching up with some old (very old, like Kent) friends and making some new ones. Like we have always said, you may never have met in person, but you always feel like you have known each other It's even cool to catch up with some of our dealer friends, who have become as much a part of OBC as the membership. JD, Jerry and Kurt, Randy, Uncle Dick, etc etc. Excellent people who look forward to seeing our (formerly) white hats converge on their tables. I propose we add a new dealer-- Mike McCann of Triple Cities Cards. He not only was accommodating to us, but by day three, he had boxes that he gave us first crack at. This was the guy at the end of row 800. He gave me a stack of about 70 cards to pass around. I'll get to listing those after I check the 62s. I did a lot of damage to sets I didn't expect to. Just about knocked off my Jets list and my Knicks list. Exceeding expectations always feels good. Came in needing 7 57 Knicks and came home needing ZERO! Had 34 52Bs on the list. Would have been happy getting under 30, I got to 22. 64 coins took some hits, including both Mantle variations thanks to Steve R. I have an extra, but I forgot which version. I figure these will be sorted in time for Cleveland next year! Pulled a boner on the Friday game as I oversold the tickets I had, but we did just fine as we found a ticket available at the window AND we all got to sit together. The Cubs should start looking for a center fielder this winter. And Puig is the REAL DEAL. Diving catch, running catch and throws a SEED to 3b to nearly catch a runner. BTW great pictures Spike, I really liked the one of the Wedding Couple! Here are my thanks. I did a MUCH better job of marking the envelopes this year. I have to get in the habit of putting my name on the envelopes I hand out. Didn't hit everyone, but I will rectify that in the coming days/weeks. I will say THANKS SO MUCH to everyone here at the top... Nick Pelletier- I already mentioned the Namath, but it was so cool I will mention it again! Another longer, stranger trip to the National this year. Kathy was originally planning to go but at (almost) the last minute wasn't feeling up to the trip, so I had a mad scramble trying to either find a roomie for the room Ihad reserved or find a roomie who had some space. As (bad) luck would haveit, Richard couldn't make it so it was my luck (good) that Steve had an extra bed and offered to share the room. Not sure if he'll make that same mistake again next year. I left out on my 800 mile drive from Durham about 8 AM Monday. The original(with Kathy) plan was to make it up towards Dayton and stay somewhere in that area Monday night. Without the additional required rest stops, I finally stopped for the night in Lebanon, IN, waving to Tom and Wes as I flew by Dayton, and passing such sights as Ninemile and Fivemile creek (realizing it wasn't an Indian name like ninna-milly creek once I got to fiva-milly creek) and "Jesus in the Hills Camp" (where "Camp" was on the second line of the sign, thus changing my favorite "are you serious" expression from "Shut the front door!" to "Jesus in the Hills!"), and picking up a copy of "Squirrel Proofing Your Home and Garden" in Centerville, IN. Good thing I didn't make the entire drive on Monday since I would have beaten Steve to the hotel. Caught up with Steve at the Convention Center on Tuesday afternoon and bought a total of 1 card: A Manu Ginobili jersey card for Kathy's collection. With many dealers not yet set up, it was a good couple hours to just walk through the CC and get the lay of the land. Picked up pizza for dinner with Steve and ate it back at the room while going through boxes of cards (mostlySteve's). Wednesday was going to be a long day of almost 12 hours at the show. As became the norm during the week, it was "lights out" somewhere after 12:30 AM (since that's when we couldn't keep our eyes open any longer) and would get up about 7 to make the 8:10 shuttle, which we caught most days. After finding there was a shuttle schedule "list" (which meant we left early at7:40 on Wednesday since the 8:10, 8:40, and 9:10 were already booked), we decided to put our names on "the list" for 8:10 for the rest of the week. The days at the show were such a blur that I don't remember what I picked upand when or where. Late dinner that night at Chili's with the early arrival OBCers (or is it Chai-Lai, as they say in Rochester?). Thursday another card crazy day. Dinner to be downtown at Chez Rittenberg's, which was a bit of a challenge for Nick and myself. Since Nick, Steve's cousin (and later Wes) were staying at the same Comfort Inn, Nick and I wentback a little early to get my car and park it at the train parking lot. Problem was, the 2.5 mile trip had traffic backed up for, well, about 2.5 miles in both directions due to construction and the grand opening of the outlets near the CC. So after taking about 30 minutes for the 10 minute trip tothe hotel, and seeing the single line of cards backed up almost the entirelength back, I decided to get on the freeway (against my better judgement of "never take an alternate route that you can't make a change on", such asa limited access road). So after the initial, quick 1/4 mile, we get stuckagain in traffic, finally getting to the parking lot about 45 minutes after we told the group to head down without us on the train and we would follow on a later train. Somehow we got to the restaurant only about 15 minutes after they did. After some beers, good food, and Mike Rich feigning to not understand how to take a picture of 4 lovely young ladies, we made it back to the hotel for another short night of rest. Friday many went to the game, but a few of us couldn't get enough cardboardand stayed at the show. After the show a few of us attended the Net54 dinner. A couple of boring speakers (but a couple of interesting ones) is the price one pays for free food and unlimited drinks. I think it was about 11 PM when Nick, Wes, and I finally called the shuttle back to the hotel. Saturday was the most "interesting" day for me. I got up and was in the bathroom when Kathy called and texted the message "Plese answer. I am in the hosp." I tried calling a couple of times and finally got an answer on her cell from the doctor, saying that they were getting ready to stitch her up and that Kathy would have to let me know what happened. About 3 hours later Igot the explanation that she had slipped while the refrigerator door and vegetable crisper drawer were open, falling INTO the refrigerator and onto the crisper drawer, breaking the drawer and cutting herself fairly seriouslyon the broken drawer. Luckily she was able to get 911 to come and take herto get her all sewn up and everything is fine now. She didn't want me to leave early but I was fairly mentally and physically beat, so I left the show a couple hours before it ended anyway. I got into our room to hear a drip, drip, drip, thinking the faucet was on. But when I looked, I see water dripping down from the ceiling onto the toilet seat. Went up from to let themknow and maintenance took care of it, or so we thought. Hung out for a few hours and then ordered and ran to pick up the pizza (with co-pilot/navigator Nick, this time not getting lost or stuck in traffic) and brought it back in time for the swap. Swap was a lot of fun as usual and included surprise appearances by Kurt and Jerry (more theirs than ours) and Cubs fan Ty and Tigers fan Spencer who ended up with a ton of RAOK from the group. I was able to pilfer a few cards from various traders' boxes andwas glad to see what I brought could help someone as well. Was also able to make a couple of trades with Shepard and Mackie to pick up a few more T205s. Another late, but great, evening! Sunday I woke up to The Return of the Drip. Went back down to the lobby andlet them know it was back. Not sure if Steve had to deal with in on Monday. It was a short day in Chicago for me as I only stayed for a couple of hours at the show before heading out. Out of time and out of money, but both well spent. The trip back wasn't too bad and thankfully uneventful. Onward to Cleveland next year for only a 9 hour drive! ================= Date: Wed, 07 Aug 2013 01:19:26 -0000 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: "Tom Housley" Subject: My National ramble Here's my rather lengthy National ramble. It's long, so thanks for cards I received will go on the Thanks server. My first trip to the National in 2 years was, as always, a great time. For those who have never attended one (why not???), the sheer number of dealersof cards & memorabilia is overwhelming. However, thanks to the savvy OBC veterans, I always have a starter plan, and that's to hit the recommended dealers. That's what I did on Friday, spending much of my time at Kurt Tourdot & Jerry Nelson's tables. Saturday was spent hitting the favorites again, but also walking the aisles, looking for hidden gems. Unfortunately I don'thave the hunting skills of Guru, Steve, or Ron Perry, but I did pretty well for myself. I did a quick in & out on Sunday, nabbing some goodies from the favorites. More to follow. My wife & I arrived in town on Thursday, battling Chicago traffic all the way. It was even worse the closer we got to the Convention Center (our hotelwas a block away). We quickly discovered that a brand-new, huge fashion outlet mall had opened that very morning =96 directly across from our hotel. So as you can imagine, the crowds & traffic were a nightmare. Checking in, we ran across Sal and his girlfriend (insert comma here) Kent and Bob Reed. They invited us out, but we were wiped out & decided to be couch potatoes & ordered a pizza & relaxed a bit. On Friday, Cherie decided she was going downtown to meet a friend, leaving me to go hunting =96 for cardboard. I would have liked to hit the Cubs game, but figured I wouldn't get much time at the show if I did. I arrived at the show Friday morning, & Steve met me in the lobby with the traditional OBC handshake (patent pending) and a dealer badge. Inside, I met up with Taylor Schock, Mike Rich, and the legendary Guru himself, Larry Tipton. Later on I ran into George Vrechek, Ron Perry, Gersh, and met Nick Pelletier. OBC handshakes (patent pending) continued to be passed around, although I only was able to give the proper handshake to about half of the guys (gotta build up my dupes boxes in order to hit the tougher ones). Nick said he thought he had something for me but didn't seem to have it =96 or sohe led me to believe (more on that story was to come on Saturday). I was hoping to run into everyone at one time or another, but later found out thatsome of the guys on the list couldn't make it to the National after all, and others were at Wrigley & seeing them would have to wait until Saturday. Lots of goodies at the show to see, especially at Kurt's table, and at another table with a bunch of 90% off boxes, all in OBC shape, and some really good ones in there; I picked off the very tough '57 Topps checklist 4/5 fora very reasonable 50 smackers. My final pickup was a nice bat display casefor a personalized bat my wife has; she was pretty happy when I gave it toher. On Saturday morning, Nick P. texts me & wants to know where I am (silly me,I didn't realize I could get in early with the dealer badges. How have I not known this?). After hitting the 90% off box =96 along with about 5 otherguys from OBC =96 I met up with Nick at Kurt's table. He tells me he does have something for me after all =96 and hands me a graded 1954 Bowman Mickey Mantle. WHAT??? That not only killed my set, but then I found out Nick also killed about 5 guys' sets,,.. with major cards. So I dub Nick the MVP ofthe convention. He killed so many sets with such glee that I think his OBCnickname should be "Dexter" (those of you who are fans of the Showtime series of the same name will get the reference.) The rest of show-time on Saturday was spent checking for bargains and trying to see the neat displays of memorabilia. I particularly like the displaysof old uniforms & took several pictures. Of course I crossed paths with several more OBCers =96 TJ Valacak, Mac Wubben =96 who cuts my '64 Topps set in half by handing my a slabbed Mantle (holy cow!), Mark Talbot, my neighbor Wes Shepard, Bob, Kent, Sal, Gary Mandell, Mike Mackie, Dr. JSGtY, & Spike Post-show, we gathered in the lobby for some group picture time & then headed out to the swap. Thanks to Gary for offering to drive me there & back. Pizza, cardboard & general hanging out with old friends was on the menu. Guru set up a display of cards from the Guru Grading Service, and a lot of cardboard changed hands. During our time in the little breakfast area, a couple of younger kids =96 maybe 10 & 12 =96 wander in to see what's going on. They strike up conversations with the guys, and by the time they leave, they've been the "victims" of OBC's RAOK =96 big time. Wide-eyed, they carried away boxes of cards, and hopefully a memory that will last them a lifetime. Sunday meant a couple of hours at the show for last-minute pickups. I hit Chandy Greenholt's table =96 now half-off of everything =96 and got a lot of '77 Pepsi Discs for 50 cents each. Then a quick stop at one of my favorite dealers, Mark Smith, who the night before had given me an extra badge. Mark let me cherry-pick a binder of near-mint early 60's Topps for a buck each. I made my last 2 stops at Uncle Dick's (20+ 51 Bowman, and a 57 Topps Aaron & Williams) & finally Kurt's, mainly to say goodbye but also to pick upa '55 Topps Ted Williams that I had my eye on for 2+ days. As far as cardboard goes, my biggest goal was to get a few '58 yellow letters, & to knock off the '58 Braves numerical checklist. No luck on the last one & only scratched the surface on the yellow letters, but I did get about20 or so 1959 Fleer Ted Williams, a lot of '77 Pepsi Discs, and various hits here & there to some tough high numbers from 61, 63, & 66. I also stumbled across a '59 no trade variation & a tough '59 Sullivan variation, so I was pretty pleased with that. All in all, the time went by way too fast. It was great to see everyone from OBC, and to catch up with dealers we've become friends with =96 Kurt & Jerry (who joined us at the swap), Mark Smith, Wayne Johnson, JD Heckathorn, & Danny Phillips (who was very nice & cut us a great deal on a '62 Bob Uecker rookie so we could finally kill one of "Dexter" Pelletier's sets) are myfavorites, and I know there are many others out there who have their favorite dealers. We're always happy to see them, and I'm sure they're happy to see us too =96 especially when we're spending! I'm already looking forward to next year in Cleveland. If you leave semi-near Cleveland, you've got to get there. See you in a year! ================= Date: Wed, 07 Aug 2013 03:30:16 -0000 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: "tjv815" Subject: My National Ramble Post OK. I think I got everyone on the Thanks server, so now for a little ramble on the show. This was just my third National, but it seems as though it gets better every time I go. I attended the show on Thursday and Saturday. On the buying front, Thursday was nothing spectacular. No major damage to my pre war, ora 67 Seaver. The big highlight was meeting up with OBCers and meeting some OBCers for the first time. Truthfully, I could go without finding a hit to my list, and the National would be worth it just to catch up with the OBCers. Here is my breakdown of Thursday. I got there about 11, and realized I didn't bring my Roster sheet with me. (Didn't even think about trying to use my smart phone to get it.) I had one OBC number in my phone =96 Sal.I texted him and although he wasn't there yet, he gave me Steve's number.Dialed him up for some badge help, and within minutes, I was in. Thank you Steve for arranging those badges! Once in the show, I quickly found my way over to Ron Estes table. He is a dealer based out of St. Louis, and has always treated us well in Chicago. Although I didn't find any banged up pre war at his table, or banged up 52 highs, I did manage to find about 50 vintage football hits. Yep, vintage football. I have decided to give the pigskin a shot. Picked up a number from the 60's at his table, with a few stars in the mix, for about 50 cents a card. I also found three short prints to my 1955 Topps Rails and Sails for 4 bucks a piece =96 Loved that price. From Ron's table, I made it over to Jerry and Kurt's table. I sent a good amount of time looking through Jerry's bins, and came away with a good dent in the vintage football collection. Specifically hitting the 50's football. I also found a few hits to my 64 Topps Giants set. From there, it was on to a local dealer, Tony Gordon of Fat Daddy's Sports. I always findhits at Tony's table, and he always has some good conversation and good prices. Thursday was no different. I found some hits to my 33 and 34 Goudeysets, and took advantage of his 50's Bowman football binder and picked up a number of cards there for 50 cents to a buck. As I continued to slowly make my way around the show, one thing was becoming very clear to me. It didn't seem like I would be picking up a 67 Seaver to put that set to rest. Although I found a few, the prices were just too high for my blood. I was also having no luck finding any Red Sox or White Sox pre war. I stopped atUncle Dick's table, hoping to find a few of the Bowman commons I still needed. No luck there. I did pick up some OPC from a dealer I have seen before here at the Chicago shows. He has a ton of binders filled with cards inorder. Managed to score about 30 hits to my 1974 OPC set at about 40 cents a card. That was about it for the Thursday show for me. Friday was an off day for me and I was back at the show on Saturday. Once again, Steve met me outside and badged me in. Once inside, I spent the first half hour or so talking to some OBCers. Bob, Wes, Taylor, Nick. Great talk and OBC handshakes. Bob let me know that he found some pre war hits over at Chapelle's table. So I headed over. I found a few hits to my 49 Bowman set and also hit my 1940 Playball Red Sox and White Sox team sets. When I asked him if he had any banged up pre war, he quickly responded by handing me some W572 strip cards. I found some hits there. Found a few American Caramels. Picked up my first National Caramel. Also picked up a handful of W514's, including Kid Gleason. I am not going to lie, part of the fun looking for these cards is seeing what else is in the stack that I was handed. As I was searching through these stacks, I was able to see a few Ruth's, Cobb, Shoeless Joe, and Black Sox such as Cicotte, Weaver, and Gandil. (Man, if I could only win power ball). I also picked up a couple of banged up 52 Topps high numbers,. Overall, I managed to pick up quite a few hits from Chapelle, and also managed to put a HUGE dent in my wallet. Shortly after leaving that table, I ran into the Guru who told me about a table with a number of 70's football at 5 cents a card. The catch was you had tobuy a thousand cards. Mike McCann is the dealers name, and I must say, this guy belongs on our list of dealers. He had monster boxes full of cards and if I could find a thousand, they would be mine for 5 cents pop. Well, even though Guru cleared him out of most of the 1960's baseball, I found huge lots of 73, 74 and 75 football. Also found some 77's, a few hits to my76 and 79 football. Found some Blackhawks cards from the 70's to start working some team sets there. And some hits to my 1978x9 quest. Overall, itwas easy to come up with 1000. I handed him 50 bucks, and was on my way to drop those cards off at the car. When I got back into the show, I was able to pick up some more vintage football, and bought a few 49 Bowmans. I also spent some time checking out some of the memorabilia that some of the auction houses had brought to show off. Very impressive. From there, it was off to the swap. Thanks to Steve for securing the room and Nick, Taylor, Steve, Mike for setting up the pizza. Well, what an event. A bunch of OBCers packed into a room. Cardboard flying everywhere. Conversation keeping the room buzzing. I know I was the beneficiary of cardsfrom George, Bob, Larry, Mike, Steve, Spike, and probably others =96 but Iwas awful about keeping track of anything at the swap. Mike was trying togive me and Tom some 1970's football. I told him I didn't even have listsput together yet. So what does he do? He hands me an 800 count box of 70's football. Unreal! And I think Steve made it a personal mission to takechunks out of my lists. Hammering my Batman sets, a few 78 cards, about adozen OPC, and about 50 vintage football hits. When I was leaving, I thought someone had left a Hostess panel in my stuff. I quickly realized it was Steve, trying to sneak in some cards. Again, just unbelievable. The generosity of this group simply cannot be matched. Thank you to everyone who I had the pleasure of seeing here in Chicago: Sal, Kent, Guru, George, Gary, Ron, Mark, Mike R, Nick, Wes, JSG, Mac, Spike, Bob, Mike M, Larry and Taylor. If I missed anyone on this list, I apologize. The time spent with all of you is truly treasured and I am hoping to meet up with everyone next year out in Cleveland. ================= To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com Date: Wed, 7 Aug 2013 00:18:47 -0400 (EDT) From: Ed Pike Subject: access to Universal Sports? They unpack cards and throw everything else in a closet. 2. They spend 15 minutes reading National reports from OBCers they just saw doing the things they're writing about. 3. They dunk a 1952 high number in water. I did that, anyway. Kurt Tourdot sold me Brooklyn Dodgers #389 Ben Wade for $50 with paper stuck to the back, so job one was getting off that paper and raising it from Tipton EX to Tipton MT. Success! Less than an hour in the soaker slipped off the paper and I pressed it between towels and books to Chicago marked the first year I arrived on Wednesday for the National "sneak preview" from 4-8pm, which really started around 1pm by meeting Mac, as we had close-timed flights. We dropped our non-card bags in an O'Hare Hilton room and took the blue train one stop to Rosemont, catching up on his DC contract work. Lodging tip: if you can't swing a hotel near the convention center, O'Hare Hilton is convenient to both flying and the L train. (Pretty sure Mac booked it via Priceline.) I thought we'd be passing time until entry at 4, but Mac reminded me that OBC expected badges via Mike Rich via Larry Kerrigan that would get us in early, during "dealer shop time." We checked will call for the badges and Larry's packet had just one. Hmm. While Mac went inside to check for other OBC options, I returned to will call and talked them (nicely) into a second badge, assuming it was a mistake on Larry's part. A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine...get into the National. While Wednesday isn't the "clearance bargains" day like Sunday, you get a shot at somewhat more material than remains after 3 days of buying by thousands of National attendees. I spent the afternoon taking a first shot at Kurt's bins and OBC material, finding new upgrades to 1955-1957-1958, a wantlist addition that proved beneficial throughout the week. Wednesday also included a first for me, getting a card slabbed at the show. Back in July, I sold a handful of off-grade T206s on eBay. In the process, several eager bidders inquired about a blank-backed version I'd listed, not knowing blanks from Piedmonts and Sweet Caps. I can tell you that T206 owners SHOULD know about them, as print oddities prove both rare and in high demand right now. I graded the T206 to authenticate against a MISSING back (being all-too-familiar with paper loss), but doing so exposed me to the "tiered" grading charges from SGC and others. Show grading cost $25 and took two hours...but they add another $50 for rarities like a T206 blank back. Hmm. This strikes me as encouraging graders to find more "rare" cards, since they financially benefit. I chatted with (inactive?) OBCer Brian Dwyer, a buyer for Robert Edwards Auctions, and he agreed it's typical. Grading companies know you can sell rarities for decent money, so add a cut for themselves. ANYWAY, it came out authentic and I paid SGC $75 for the card coffin. I didn't expect to start getting OBC handshakes so quickly, but here they came on Wednesday, hits to Post sets and 50s upgrades from Sal, Nick, Kent, Mac, and just about everyone on site. Speaking of handshakes, Steve Rittenberg asked in advance about one of the biggest, a 1933 World Wide Gum #5 with English-only back text, new to the type collection. He handed me an envelope with that one and several others, which I tucked away early in the show and nearly "lost" by putting it into a rarely-used backpack pocket. (Finally found it hours later, saving me further anxiety.) Dinner that night meant lassoing several OBCers, including Mac, Steve, Sal & his girlfriend COMMA Kent. Half the team started with Hooters in mind but compromised on Chili's, a nice meal and conversation on day 1 finds. I slyly acted as banker and put the group bill on a card to collect more show cash, always a recommended National strategy. Started back at the show as early as possible Thursday, having limited time with my girlfriend Sunny expected later in the day, after which we planned to hit town. Spent most of it chipping away at the 50s upgrade lists. Hard to remember exactly which day I received each OBC hit, but credit at least Taylor Schock, Tom Housley, Guru, Mike Rich, Bob Reed, Gary Mandell, Mark Talbot, JSG, TJ Valacak, and others who orbited around Kurt and Jerry's table, the most reliable place to find OBC hats. Kurt's table is also where I decided to start the Red Heart set with a $10 Billy Cox, adding 4 more by Around noon, Sunny called to say various snafus made her miss the flight to Chicago (on Spirit, who only flies that route once per day). After shared consternation, she picked up a later flight on American and arrived in O'Hare about 5pm. She joined the trip to visit my half-brother who lives nearby and spent Thu/Fri night in his family's neighborhood, breaking on Friday afternoon to join the OBC game. A great time as always, with LA taking it 6-2 despite the Cubs putting 15+ guys on base. (Several photos from the game went into my OBC album: http://www.flickr.com/photos/47033088@N00/sets/72157634928038347/ ) It was baseball card giveaway day at Wrigley, but all cards were gone before we arrived, the only "miss" on my trip's wantlist. Chicago has no end of good food and places to visit, but a (free) highlight's the Cultural Center and its mix of architecture and exhibits. Just a stone's throw from the park's famous silver bean sculpture and great for pictures. It's also worth a walk through Bucktown (NW of downtown) if you like neighborhood eccentricity--its local Walgreen's (built in a former bank) even has a concierge. Sunny took off Saturday morning and my midday return to the National netted more handshakes, chipping 1971 OPC, 1977 TCMA/Galasso, 50s upgrade, and Post lists down further. I nabbed a $20 Moe Berg from Jerry & the aforementioned $50 high number from Kurt, surprisingly my biggest payouts of the year, as most table buys topped out at $5 or $10. While no sets perished at 2013 National, a bunch of stars fell thanks to OBC, even before our swap started in earnest at the appropriately-named Club Room. The swap meant more catching up with George Vrechek, Guru, Gersh, Mike Mackie, and even both Kurt and Jerry stopped by for pictures and to drop off more cards. (A large box of those gifts went to our 10 and 12 year-old mid-swap visitors, who I think expected us to be after-show sellers. They were pleasantly surprised to say the least!) Steve Rittenberg added to the hits with more 1939-40 Play Balls, several full series of TCMA/Galassos (which in turn were split with others after grabbing a handful), and a 1949 Bowman high number. My show and swap tallies nearly filled a 400-count box, more than expected but clearly less than some! It's amazing to see the size of boxes and batches that change hands. Big thanks to Mike Mackie and Guru, who showed their *bona fides* with a ride and place to stay after the swap, especially good knowing I'd fly home early the next morning...just in time to dunk Ben Wade in some water. My experieince is that '66 and '67 Topps are among the most challenging sets to complete because of the shortprints. The good news (and reason for my writing) is that I did complete both sets within the past couple years and was able to due so without spending "$100 for Jim Shellenback (or insert name)". My set is generally midgrade, so sounds like we're compatible there too. Also - I would venture to bet without looking that the vast majority of the shortprints I bought were procured via So what do I recommend? First a heavy dosage of patience (to offset the urge to spend $100 on a nobody). I recall going to the 2010 National needingtwo cards to finish off the 1966 set and being excited that I found one atmy price pretty quickly. But it was that darn Minnesota Twins team card standing in my way. Everyone who had one for sale was asking about twice (or more) of what I was willing to pay. So I passed. And waited. And it was several months later that I found the '66 Twins team card at my target price. SCORE! Set killed!! Second thing is to create focused Ebay searches. Not sure if you know how to do this on Ebay, but my searches identify the set (and the cards I stillneed). Ebay syntax is such that whatever you put inside of parentheses ( ) acts as an or. Also, a "-" means exclude So the following is my currentquery in Ebay for the last 11 cards I need to complete the 1958 Topps set: 1958 Topps (1, 30, 47, 52, 150, 187, 288 , 289, 310, 370, 418) -PSA -SGC -reprint This will help target your search to only the cards you need. I find that I add a lot of "-" (excludes) in certain sets or else you get a lot of new Heritage style, reprints, graded cards, etc. that you don't want. So what I've done is to exclude cards with PSA, SGC or reprint in the title of the listing. You can create an email alert to notify you when something is listed ... including setting pricing parameters. Part of my success was looking for BuyIt Nows where the price was $20 or less. You can play around with the pricing levels, but you get the idea. These alerts were assigned to searches I created as outlined above. By doing this you will get an email notice whenever somebody lists one of these insane shortprints as a Buy It Now at a reasonable price.... you can jump on it! I will tell you that I picked up many a shortprint in such a manner. Hope this is remotely helpful ... and best of luck to you. Here's one of my saved 1958 topps (yellow, yl, yt) (put anything in parenthesis that you want. It could be card numbers, player names, or any other combination.) Then, if you want to exclude anything - say, PSA graded cards, Topps heritage, reprints, etc etc - you then hit the space bar, put a "minus" sign, andthen inside parenthesis anything you want to exclude. So, here's the rest of my search in the above example. These are the yellow-letter cards I already have, or things I'm not interested in, so I don't need them showing up in my search for the yellow letters: -(ennis, landis, mossi, neeman, graded, psa, sgc, jackson, courtney, richardson, aaron, hoeft, thompson, sleater, gernert, farrell) So that would make my entire search as: 1958 topps (yellow, yl, yt) -(ennis, landis, mossi, neeman, graded, psa, sgc, jackson, courtney, richardson, aaron, hoeft, thompson, sleater, gernert, farrell) Click the "go button", & then "Save Search". You can get even more restrictive too. On the left side of the page there is an "amount" slider with minimums & maximums. Or if you want only "Buy It Now", you could choose that. After you click "save search" you can name the search anything you want. I always just copy & paste my entire search into the "name" bar. Once you do that you can choose to have newly-listed items e-mailed to you once a day. Not to be outdone, I'm posting my own very long-winded version to possibly take the prize as the longest tale from the National. This is actually an article for SCD which should appear in the next issue or two, complete with many photos. Time Flies at the National George Vrechek Have you ever gone to a reunion or a wedding and wondered how did the time go by so fast? If you have been active in the sports collectibles hobby and attended the 2013 National Sports Collectors Convention, you might have wondered how the five days of the convention went by so quickly. There were dealers and collectors to greet, old cards and equipment to inspect, new cards to discover, autographs to acquire, and money to spend. One adage has been that if you don't find it at the convention, it probably doesn't exist. While that isn't exactly true for collectors of scarce items, it was surprisingly true (at some price) for a wealth of items. Wednesday preview The convention started on Wednesday afternoon July 31 in the VIP lounge with promoter Mike Berkus surrounded by hundreds of "VIPs" interested in the first crack at material.as well as complimentary food and autographs. There were no long speeches, but there soon were long lines for the autograph guests. Everyone seemed to be able to get what they wanted and at 4 p.m. the substantial crowd of VIP ticket holders quickly entered the convention floor. Various ticket packages encouraged the purchase of badges and packages granting easy access to the floor and no long lines. First impressions in the door At Nationals several years ago, special trading cards were distributed as you entered the convention. Less of that seems to occur each year. This year there was a one bag handout containing Heritage's Official Program of the National and the SMP Sports Market Report with prices from PSA. The Official Program included a schedule of events and table layout; although I missed finding it until six days later because I mistakenly thought it was just information about Heritage auctions. Dealer locations Based on the system for awarding opportunities to select table locations, you found a mix of dealers near the entrance. They had at least one thing in common, however - all of them have been to many Nationals and get to pick their locations sooner than those with less history. Some such dealers are still small, personal operations defraying their own hobby expenses; others have grown into larger full-time operations. Four table-holders have been at all 34 Nationals - John Rumirez, B.A. Murry, Pat Quinn, and Sports Collectors Digest. Not too much further in the door, you encountered most of the rest of the familiar dealers (minus Al Rosen) who have attended Nationals. For those of us who have mainly attended shows in Chicago, there was a particular interest in visiting dealers not normally appearing in Chicago, such as those more active on the East or West Coasts. The impression from the first part of the convention floor was that about everyone sold vintage baseball cards. This impression again had more to do with the system for selecting locations than the evolving nature of the hobby and the rest of the convention space. Long-time attendees get first choice. Long-time attendees tend to be vintage baseball card dealers. They will locate near the front entrance, hoping to catch collectors before their energy, footwear, and money all run out. Convention information mentioned that as the hobby has changed only about 15% of the convention floor was devoted to vintage cards. However many of those vintage card dealers were right there as you entered the floor. There were plenty of vintage card dealers to choose from among the 311 dealers that I counted. My concern that older cards were all getting slabbed proved to be unfounded. Business seemed to be active throughout the show in the dealer section, but there was room to maneuver. At Nationals years ago, you might run into long lines, crowded aisles, and difficulty accessing tables. There were plenty of people at the 2013 Convention, but they had room to get around with wide aisles and adequate circulation space. It was not always easy to find the booth numbers on the floor in front of the dealers or posted above their space. Lighting was pretty good but depended on how close you were to the overhead fixtures. Some dealers paid for electricity at their booths and had task lighting to help collectors see what they were buying. Unusual items If you were looking for 1952 Topps high numbers, they were there. Even the box in which Al Rosen found high numbers in 1986 was there at Dave and Adam's Card World. If you wanted unopened packs of 1961 football Nu-Cards and the original vendor box, they were there. A Mickey Mantle jersey and hat were on display at Legendary Auctions. How about Eddie Gaedel's bat? The bat that midget Eddie Gaedel held while drawing a four-pitch walk from Bob Cain in 1951 was in a Heritage Auction display case. Since Bill Veeck told Gaedel to never swing at a pitch, the bat is probably still in mint condition. Two nice looking ladies "manned" a booth for Leaf products promoting Bench Warmer cards. They were not ignored. I even saw kids at the convention! What a concept. Children under 12 were free. General admission for everyone else was $20. Corporate Pavilion Once beyond the initial group of card dealers, the 34 corporate participants had very professional displays featuring their products or services. Manufacturers Topps, Upper Deck, Panini, and Leaf all seemed busy handling lines of collectors and promotional items of some kind. The lexicon of the promotional language included wrapper redemptions, relic cards, 1/1 cards, mystery packs, and other limited card issues too complicated for me to explain or understand. But at least now I know where the entrance freebies from long ago Nationals have gone; they morphed into redemptions. Heritage Auctions, Hunt Auctions, PSA, Beckett Media, and Blowout Cards also had large spaces. The carpeting in this area was a welcome relief. I could see how important the corporate participants were to the financial health of the convention. Tristar Autograph Pavilion Athletes attracted many to the convention to not only get autographs but to purchase balls, uniforms, supplies, and perhaps spill over to the dealer tables. Dealers handling autograph-related items were adjacent to the autograph area. It is apparent that Tristar has handled autograph events galore, and the operation seemed to run about as smoothly as possible. It was a particular bonus that announcements about autograph times and lines didn't spill out to the remainder of the convention floor and interfere with Among those signing were Mike Piazza, Chipper Jones, Pedro Martinez, Johnny Bench, Carlton Fisk, Eddie Murray, Ozzie Smith, Cal Ripken, Jr., Ernie Banks, Joe Morgan, Pete Rose, Roger Clemens, Bob Griese, Dan Hampton, Lawrence Taylor, Mike Ditka, Lou Holtz, Eric Dickerson, Frank Gifford, Mia Hamm, Bobby Hull, Tony Esposito, Jerry Lucas, Elvin Hayes, Sugar Ray Leonard, Thomas Hearns, and Roberto Duran. Olympic Pavilion and Fosbury The Olympic Pavilion consisted of 18 dealers primarily with Olympic pins.and plenty of room in between. The space they occupied is apparently surplus to the needs of the card dealers, corporate, and autograph operations, but all part of the space package offered/required by the Rosemont Convention My best experience there was visiting with Dick Fosbury, 1968 Olympic Gold Medalist in the high jump. Long jump 1968 Gold Medalist Bob Beamon was also present. Fosbury was at a table to promote Olympic athletes in general and represent the World Olympians Association of which he is the past president. Fosbury is a retired civil engineer living in Idaho. I asked him when he last high jumped. He said it was in 1999 in the Senior Olympics where he placed third, not bad high jumping at his then age of 52. We talked about special shoes for track athletes and high jumpers in particular (.4 inches of padding allowed in the toe area), foam in the landing area, composite tracks, and the evolution from amateurs to professionals. Fosbury is a tall, athletic 66 year-old, who will be forever identified with the Fosbury Flop, but who should be equally known as an all-around nice guy. TV show A new cable TV episode for a program called "Piece of the Game" was filmed at the National. The set was complete with lights, cameras, and action featuring collectibles. Collectors were invited to stop by for a free evaluation of their items and to share stories of interest to the world of sports collectors. The more distant dealers If you returned to the more distant corners of the dealer area, you might find some hidden gems from dealers not as high on the priority table ranking. It was interesting to find dealers with boxes of inexpensive new cards that attracted collectors. There was something reassuring about the future of the hobby seeing collectors search through boxes of newer cards priced at 25 cents. I expected to find less enthusiasm and a lot less space devoted to inexpensive cards. The sometimes unorganized filing of older cards in these outlying areas resulted in a sea of people thumbing through cardboard in search of hidden gems at great prices. For example, dealer Chandy Greenholt of Lewisville, North Carolina, provides hours of entertainment with boxes of miscellany. At Mike McCann's (Johnson City, NY) table at the edge of the convention floor, if you dug hard enough and dove under a table or two, you could find 60s commons in decent condition for 5 to 10 cents each, well worth the walk and crawl under the table. You didn't have to go more than a few feet from the entrance to find SCD's Tom Bartsch and Steve Madson passing out free sample SCD issues and selling catalogs for $10. They did pretty well since they had nothing to lug home. Berkus and NSCC Mike Berkus and John Broggi of SMI worked on promoting and organizing the National all year. They were hands-on during the convention. I caught both Berkus and Broggi while they were on duty, responding to questions or issues and taking a few minutes to answer my host of questions about how all this worked.so well. Berkus is easy to spot as the guy in the suit, a nice looking suit I might add. You could tell that the business plan was well organized, and that Berkus took his responsibilities for running and promoting the convention seriously. They even had a media contact available in Ray Schulte. I recalled prior years of post-convention reports commenting on debates about future locations, the selection of promoters, the size of the facilities, and the process for promoting the convention. I didn't hear major complaints on any of those topics this year. The National Sports Collectors Association (NSCC) is a not for profit entity run by a 12-person board selected by dealers who vote and have held space at a minimum of two Nationals. The NSCC first hired SMI about 8 years ago to handle promoting the convention. The NCSS is responsible for continuing to monitor that selection and paying the bills. Unlike some of the other convention organizers hired in prior years, Berkus understood the event, promoting the very first convention and participating as a table-holder in later years. The result has been that in recent years the convention is held in facilities with adequate space, in accessible rotated locations, and with less risk of financial difficulties. There are many decisions that need to be made, risks to be understood and minimized, and the long-term image of the National to nurture. The fat wallet story Unfortunately pilferage is a problem in all retail establishments including the National. Dealers were ever on the watch for light-fingered discounts. However there is at least one positive story to report. A collector sat down at a table and noted a big, fat wallet left near card binders at dealer Roger Neufeldt's table (Sports Memories, Inc.) The wallet was turned over to Neufeldt for safekeeping. Minutes later the frazzled wallet owner appeared and reclaimed his lost wallet, thankful that he could now spread his money around the various tables rather than leaving it all in one place. Final thoughts There were no seminars like those held many years ago, but there were gatherings by collector groups such as Net54 and OBC after show hours. There seemed to be good crowds without crowding each day of the show. There were millions of cards and collectibles all arranged and packaged ready to take home. Collectors had to visually sort through the sea of items to find the few hundred items on their want lists. Collectors diverted from their lists to acquire other items as well. Time was at a premium and it was much easier to find cards if they were organized. However, if you had the tenacity to dig further and had some luck, there were also diamonds in the rough waiting to be discovered under tables and in boxes of stuff. Collector Larry Tipton of Hilliard, Florida, spent five days at the convention and summed it up as follows, "I thought the venue was great. I wish the aisles and table numbers were more clearly marked. I bought more cards from sellers who had their stuff organized, in order, and priced. Snack bar hot dog was poor to fair. Overall it was a great experience!" Once you made it back from the National, you found your want list had shrunk a bit, but had not disappeared. Now, if you could only put your hands on those remaining 1949 Bowman high numbers, and maybe some of those 1966 highs, and... The search continues. ================= Date: Fri, 9 Aug 2013 09:31:08 -0500 To: smartalecx@aol.com From: john harrell Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] goudey storage I use the nine pocket sheets for all my prewar sets. This is pretty funny, Bob. I followed the link to Fat Daddy's blog to read the comments to his post, and it looks like your comment was the final blow as the tide of public opinion turned on Fat Daddy. After your comment (and Tony's response) he /closed /all comments. I have no problem with a dealer wanting to maximize his profit, but it's kind of petty for him to whine about it publicly (even if it's his own blog), and then close the door on comments when folks disagree with him or want to debate the point. One of his final comments is "You guys can start a little crusade against me, that's fine" ... I don't even remember seeing fat daddys sports at the convention. I walked every aisle several times and probably had a look at his cards sometime during the week. I am looking to pay 5-7% or less when purchasing cards, but Iwon't even make an attempt if the cards are in to nice condition. I'm looking at the 2010 Standard Catalog of baseball cards. 1960 Topps #250Stan Musial books NM $100, EX $50, VG $25. In the front part of this book under "how to use this catalog" under "Grading", Good condition cards sell for 50% of value of VG, or $12.50. Fair condition cards sell for 50% G condition cards, so 1960 Topps Stan Musial in Fair condition books for $6.25 (full retail price). No pricing information on cards in Poor condition. So that P-F condition 1960 Topps Stan Musial card under glass at a dealers table has a "sticker" price of $20 on it. And dealers get offended when offered the full retail price of $5? Heres a better game plan. Just stop by Kurt Tourdot table and dig through his $5 box! Yes to bad comments are closed on this blog, fat daddy sounds passionate about old cardboard. He just needs some education. Returning to the front of the 2010 Standard Catalog under "valuations". "Many dealers operate on a 100% mark-up, paying about 50% of a cards retail value for cards they are purchasing for their inventory. For low demand cards, dealers may pay as little as 10% or even less of retail. Many times for an OBCer, 5-7% of book price is full retail price. I remember TJ, George, JSG, and myself pulling hundreds of those nickel a piece cards from that table towards the back of the show. At least 1,200 of the cardsI bought there were 1968 and older Topps baseball cards. On Sunday, all the action was at the 80% off booth. 1972 Topps baseball high numbers for .20c each? I recognize the name, but do not remember the booth. I thought I stopped by every booth in the show, so I have to believe I was there, and may not have purchased anything. Taylor, and others, made an excellent point, about price for condition. I have often told a dealer that I would only pay 5 - 7% for a card in the condition that he was showing me, or that I am lookingfor a card in the 5 - 7% condition range. I do not think I have ever saidI only buy cards at 5 - 7%, so if it is me he is talking about (always a possibility), then the mis-communication comment is probably accurate. I believe it was Tom that mentioned that there are lots of other dealers for meto spread my money around to. Considering what I spent at the show and the umber of purchases I did make, with hits to 100 sets, there must be a fewdealers who believe I am reasonable enough to do business with me. Considering the number of dealers that cater specifically to us, and the dealers that call us over, when they see the hat, I would say OBC is valued by manydealers. In a message dated 8/20/2013 8:43:20 A.M. Central Daylight Time, taylor_schock@hotmail.com I have a general concern on this entire thread. Are we comparing apples to apples here? From the blog: "A minor rant about the OBC guys. Many of them this year would only pay 5to 7 percent of book for cards. Needless to say, I didn't sell much or anything to those few guys. I'm a little disappointed with those OBC guys only willing to pay 5 to 7 percent of book. They need to realize that dealers can't purchase their inventory at 5 to 7 percent of book so how can wesell them to you at that price? Most of the OBC guys are reasonable and terrific. There are a select few, though, that are a little ridiculous. " First off, I don't get why people are getting offended by this. Is he saying anything that isn't true? There are many of us that WILL only pay 5 to 7 percent for cards. But the reasonable expectation is that those cardsare in the 5 to 7 percent CONDITION range. I don't think there are many of us (though there might be a few) who expect to buy many VG or better cards (barring the occasional "find") for this price range on a regular basis. If someone offered me 5-7% for VG or better condition cards, I might get ticked off too. At the same time, if a blanket statement was made by someone that they only pay 5-7% of BV for cards, and the dealer interpreted that as that's what they would pay for cards regardless of condition, then there was just a basic misunderstanding or miscommunication and his "minor rant" is unfounded. So my basic questions to those who were actually at his table. Were his cards overpriced for the condition they were in or was he unreasonable to deal with? At least one person here thought this dealer was reasonable towork with. (the only "witness" to speak up, so far) I'm not disallowing comments made here about how some dealers operate, just trying to get a better understanding on THIS particular situation before jumping to conclusions. Or maybe I'm just getting too much of a laissez faire attitude in my old age. Thanks Joe, and it was a real pleasure! The show was actually a bit smaller than the usual Raleigh shows, but as wefound out, it was more a promotion for the autograph enthusiasts rather than the card collectors (I scored a couple freebies as well). But you can't have autograph shows without card dealers, so.... I still made a few decent pickups. Chandy's table had EVERYTHING for a $1 apiece, including the leftover $3/$5/$10 items from the National, so I got adecent stack of goodies there. Bill Huggins had a preview for the October auction along with some "50% off the sticker price" cards, which netted me a few of those "cheapskate, 5-7% range, OBC" cards (a '54 Mathews for $4, a'54 Snider for $7), which may have gotten rejected from the GGS since theydidn't have any rips, pieces missing, writing, OR paper loss on them. Got a few more Exhibits as well from a couple other dealers. Not a bad show, but everything I bought (except for ONE card) were from the usual Raleigh show dealers, so I've now been privy to "The Mark Holland Experience". And finally, a BIG THANK YOU to Ant Arbeeny for the FaF Hyatt accommodations! I wanted to take a minute to thank this amazing group for all the cardboard and friendship I've receivedover the past 12 months. Highlights for me include: Major major help with my sets, especially 67 (which I owned about a dozen of a year ago), 70, 73 (almost done), and 74 (done, thanks to Tom Housley pulling from his first set). I've also come within one card of 73 Hockey and got major starting help with 65 and 66 Baseball and 1969 Football from Guru. Dozens of amazing vintage Red Sox including some Bowmans, some 52 Topps, Lonborgs, Doerrs, Peskys, Dropos and a Fleer Piersall that looks like it (barely) endured a nuclear blast (thanks, Taylor!). Huge hits to my Yastrzemski collection including an Impossible Dream card -- Yaz's rookie card, from a certain retired Navy man in Nevada. A Secret Santa puffy overloaded with great vintage Red Sox and Bruins cardboard + an official OBC hat, courtesy of Ken M. Massive, collection-altering boxes from Kent and Guru and a mailing from Bob D that doubled my Yaz inventory. Regular, often high-volume exchanges with Taylor, Andy H, Wes S, my mentor Brian B, Jason C, Bob Donaldson and several more. Having a place to send extra old cardboard gathered along the way, knowing it will be gladly received with appreciation. Most importantly, fresh baseball & collecting info & wisdom and awesome newfriendships based on the magic of old cardboard. Thanks very much to one and all -- OBC truly is the greatest. --Jake Elwell ================= Date: Mon, 26 Aug 2013 18:30:33 -0700 (PDT) To: Patrick Prickett , From: Patrick Prickett Subject: Is a PSA 10 mc possible? Hi All, I don't do much (okay, any) grading ... but I have 8 cards from 1952 Topps that are seriously the best looking cards I've ever seen for gloss, corners, edges, etc. BUT they are all diamond cuts. So my questions are: 1) Does PSA even assign PSA 10 mc ... or is that an impossibility? (PSA 9mc?) 2) Even if they did ... does anyone have a sense of what these would be worth? (i.e., does it makes sense to grade these or would I just be wastingmy (NOTE: if I graded these, my intention would be to sell them. But if I don't I'll probably just hang onto them). I'm in territory not familiar in my collection. The only 10s I have are the Tipton kind! So any advice/suggestions would be appreciated. ================= Date: Mon, 26 Aug 2013 22:07:48 -0700 (PDT) To: OBC Ramblings From: Geno Wagner Subject: Fw: Stars for a buck I never saw this come through the server, so I'm going to try again. I've had a shake up in employees after a fist fight broke out over a 1962 Post baseball card cut with "pinking shears" and another misunderstanding involving a hole punched Mantle. #2 Someone in Chicago requested that I bring the extra 1955 Topps Yogi card(trimmed) to the show on Sunday to be used in some sort of "Stan Hack" operation. Well I brought Yogi, but forgot who made this request, and nobody texted or attempted contact. I take it diamond cut means that it is so miscut that the card is off both horizontally and vertically. What you are left with of the card is sort of a truncated parallelogram? In any event, I think they would probably say authentic but with no number, - other than a Tipton 5 maybe. I've never had anything graded myself, but wouldn't waste money having these graded. ================= Date: Thu, 29 Aug 2013 13:23:21 -0400 (EDT) To: dugouttraders@yahoogroups.com, OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com, From: smartalecx@aol.com Subject: 54 bowman gremlin thought i had finished this set with all of the variations with the exception of teddy ballgame. but i was wrong. i am in need of a # 145 billy martin with a .985/.983 fielding average line on the back. any help? OK, I'm one of those guys resistant to change - but Yahoo Groups has reallyscrewed the pooch. They completely re-did the Groups pages. They are next to impossible to navigate - and according to our "thanks" server, Chris Stufflestreet posted something today. Neat trick. The good news is Yahoo is getting slammed by people left and right about the re-design. Nice of them to let people know about in advance too. whoops, wait, no they didn't. I hope everyone else has an easier time with this. It looks like some exec hired his fresh-out-of-college kid who had a freshman-level design course (and skipped 75% of the classes) to "improve" the Groups pages. No virus found in this message.
