Some day I'll probably put them in binders, but I started collecting the set that way to the end. In a message dated 6/30/2013 7:28:36 P.M. Although I grew up on the south side of Chicago, and am a White Sox fan, I have loved the Red Sox since Wade Boggs started dominating the hot corner. That's a result of playing 3rd base in little leageu. Boggs and Brett quickly became a few of my favorite players. And shortly after the 86 Series, I found myself rooting for the Red Sox all the time. After the Red Sox 2004 World Series victory, I decided to try and collect an autographed ball from every player who played on the team that year. I was able to make a lot of progress the first few years, getting a bunch of signatures in spring training and here in Chicago when Boston would come into town. I found the stars to be easier than someof the guys who were only on the roster for a few games. Well, for the last three years, I have only needed two players =96 Andy Dominque and Bobby Jones. Dominique had 11 at bats that year for the Sox, and Jones threw a grand total of 3.1 innings. Last year, my brother in law was able to track down Andy Dominique through a connection at the University of Nevada, wherehe was working as a coach. So, I am down to just needing Bobby Jones. This year, Jones signed on as the pitching coach of the Rockland Boulders. Rockland's home ballpark is located in Pomona New York. If anyone out in OBC land is heading out that way, please let me know. I would love to twist your arm into trying to get a ball signed by Jones to complete my team set.And of course, I will do my best to get some cardboard your way. A quick search on-line shows a number of Hotels in the $50 to $75 per night range. A four night hotel bill and some gas money and the trip should be under $200, even less with more people. Let me know if you're interested and we can work out the details. ================= Date: Wed, 10 Jul 2013 15:12:13 -0700 To: Supreme Commander From: rick.lyons22@yahoo.com Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] 1957 clemente $20 20 hours to go on evilbay I bid on it won it for 20 $ couple weeks ago won the Williams for 22$ and aLarson rookie for 18$ these stars are being had for decent prices thanks for the heads up. This is due to changes over the past few days from the sequester and the furloughs for DoD civilians and those impacts that are going to require me to be in the office all of that week. Our civs are off on Fridays, and the second order effect is that both of my GS bosses are TDY that week now due to a previously scheduled 1 week conference for next week being spread out over the next twowork weeks for them which leaves me here as the OIC. I'm hoping that we can meet more OBC members sometime soon in the future and that we will get the opportunity to go next year in Cleveland. The other effect is that I have been late getting thanks out and owe some return fire to folks and haven't been able to find the spare time between work and visiting family to go through my card boxes to send that out, which is frustrating to me since I am a person who doesn't like for things to sit around undone. Nick, there are many great sets, both big and small in the pre-war era.
They are primarily "doable" but instead of saving for Mantle, Mays ,Clemente & Aaron you need to pony up for guys like Ruth, Gehrig, Cobb , Mathewson & Wagner depending on the years you seek. Nothing to it!

For me, I wanted a full set or two from various eras, so I went for 1936 Goudey(easy set), 1927 York Caramel (chocked full of HoFers and type 2 is very challenging), 1911 T205 (big set, obtainable if you stay away from the variations) , E95 and E96 Caramel Sets (55 cards total, some big ones, but obtainable with money , no real rarities)

Those are just my silly choices. I like them, but to each his own. I started 34-36 Diamond Stars a few times and gave up, but I like those too...they are colorful, artsy and have neat period write ups on the back. Plenty of HoFers (my true favorite collecting quest) and can be found pretty easy...except the high numbers which are just the same players' second card, you can probably skip those unless you are like many of us and just have to have it all ;)

Aw so many cards, so little time (err...money)

I decided to try a set from each decade ... although I am still trying to figure out a good set from the 1920s. Here's what I did: 1948 Bowman - A 48 card set with the "rookie" cards of Musial, Berra, Spahn, Kiner among others (though they weren't really rookies). The final 12 are slightly harder to find. I don't recall this one being a difficult set. Might be the decade's easist set to go after. 1936 Goudey - Another black & white set, only 25 cards and this set falls in between the tough Ruth/Gehrig era and the tough Williams/DiMaggio era. HOFers here are Cochrane, Cuyler, Ferrell, Gomez, Greenberg, Harris, Klein, 1931 W517 - If you're up for a challenge try this. 54 cards - 2 Ruths, 2 Cochranes. Plus all time greats like Gehrig, Hornsby, Grove, GC Alexander, Foxx, Ott, etc. More than the set is in the HOF (a quick eye-ball of the set checklist I counted 32) 1910s T51 Murad - 150 card set in six series of 25. This is the "College Series". It's a colorful old tobacco set with most of the fronts featuring some type of sport. These can generally be had cheaply on Ebay. Those colleges with popular sport pictures (baseball, football, basketball) have a premium price - but even those are reasonable. Thanks for the replies. Long story short, we lost our garage to fire on Wednesday night. Good news, the house and its contents are safe. Bad news, the garage and everything in it is a total loss. Lots of tools, knickknacks, mementos, etc. Sucks to lose that stuff, but it is what it is. Lives and health are way more important and we've got all of that. Blessings are pouring in, which is pretty darn cool. It could be a LOT worse. I was in my office around 6:30 Pacific and smelled something burning. I alerted my wife and we sniffed our way to the laundry room, which in turn opens into the garage. We opened the door to the garage and heat and smoke came rushing in at us. We quickly shut the door and called 911, which as it turns out wasn't the first call they received about our house - neighbors who happened to be outside had already called, plus a city fire captain who was playing the 12th hole (our back yard looks out onto the 12th fairway of our local muni) had called and then jumped our fence to assist. Anyway, what was my first instinct after the animals and people were out? Yeah, grab my binders of OBC-style Dodgers and Rams. As an aside, whenever the subject of fire had come up in the past, I always wondered to myself... "How am I going to react, and will I try to grab anything on the way out the door?" Guess I have my answer. I think I might have my priorities a little skewed. I'll have to ponder that one a bit. At any rate, the fire department shows up (3 engines, 10 firefighters) and a couple of police cars for crowd control. Looking back, I am stunned to think about what an event this was for our neighborhood and curious passersby. I did snarl at one asshat as I was walking to my car - the fire department hadn't even arrived yet, and this guy is holding up his phone so he can take pictures. As I'm walking by I yell at him, "are you seriously taking pictures of my burning house??" "I'm sorry, I'll delete them," he says. I just kept walking. I was numb, shocked and scared at the time, so I couldn't muster the energy to rip him more. As it turns out, he wasn't even close to the only one doing that. In my opinion, it is the height of tackiness to take pictures or record video of someone's tragedy. I wouldn't dream of doing that. So the FD gets everything under control, garage destroyed, house saved. Some smoke did get into the house, which leaves a film on everything and makes it smell. My insurance will cover all of that, plus rebuilding what needs to be rebuilt. I'm told it will be a long process - we can't even get power or water to the house until the garage frame is demolished, all the debris cleared away and a new frame built. That will be a minimum of three weeks away. In the meantime, we can't stay there so that means finding somewhere temporary for us and our animals. Probably going to have to find a house to rent - something else the insurance will cover, but it's just one more pain in the rear to have to deal with. So yes, the card collection is safe. Because we can't stay there, and our local newspaper was kind enough (activate your sarcasm detector) to print that we would be staying with family, I feel that there is a very good chance that we will be burglarized. I will probably move all of my vintage stuff to another location - I'm not worried about televisions or anything else that can be replaced, but I've become sort of attached to my Tipton-esqe collection. ================= Date: Fri, 26 Jul 2013 14:10:16 -0400 To: obc ramblings From: Matthew Glidden Subject: Available: 1968 Topps Game FCFS Checked everyone on the OBC Who's Collecting What list and have these 11 Freehan 12 Osteen 15 Hargan 16 Chance 20 Gonzalez 25 Alley 28 Staub 29 Carew 32 Cepeda Most are in Tipton shape, a couple are VG. ================= To: "Geordie Calvert" ,OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com Date: Fri, 26 Jul 2013 20:46:39 +0000 From: illini_grad_90@yahoo.com Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] Had a little weenie roast at my house the other night ================= Date: Fri, 26 Jul 2013 21:34:56 -0500 To: "OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com" From: Steve Rittenberg Subject: Cheap Batter-Up HOFer I'd buy it but I already have plenty in my dupes box. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1934-1936-Batter-Up-3-Al-Lopez-P-45491/310708612847?_trksid=p2047675.m1850&_trkparms=aid%3D222002%26algo%3DSIC.FIT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D11%26meid%3D134979429247806766%26pid%3D100011%26prg%3D1005%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D5%26sd%3D321146201866%26 1934 Batter Up #3 Lopez for $15. I had a little time as I watch the Braves/Cardinals on ESPN to chime in on this topic strand. I like the suggestions that you have received already and George's article certainly sheds light on the collectability of many of the sets issued in the 30's and 40's - all 181 of them. I suggest that you keep plugging away at the "monster" T-206 and `33 Goudey sets and eventuallyyou will get to the big money HOF'ers and THEN it will get really slow. It's all part of collecting I suppose. So let me offer my suggestions of whatelse to collect: 1) T-218 - This is a set of 153 champion athletes that include track & field, boxing, golf, billiards, bowling and aviation. I have been working on a Master set of these beauties for a number of years (you want to talk about slowing down on a collection - looking for an affordable Jack Johnson Tolstoi back will take a lifetime). This is a very doable set that is over 100 year old. Drawback - no baseball. 2) 1936 Goudey - This set of 25 cards is highlighted by 2 TIGERS - Hank Greenberg and Mickey Cochran (no wonder I like it) and of all the Goudey sets I think is the most doable and affordable. If your not satisfied with just collecting one of each card there numerous front/back combination with different game scenarios given on each card. Drawback - being black & white it is not a particularly attractive set. 3) W514 - This strip card set of 120 cards isn't particularly pretty, in fact it's safe to say they are pretty ugly but it may be a reason that they can be found at affordable prices. Now unlike the previously mentioned sets this set will be far more difficult to complete with Mathewson, Ruth, Johnson, Speaker, Hornsby, Alexander and other HOF'ers like that - the last 25 cards or so will be difficult, but they are among the most affordable cards of these icons of the sport. Drawback - ugly. 4) 1941 Double Play - This set has 75 cards with 2 players on each card andcan be collected as whole cards or as many OBC'er will attest as cut in half cards. My collection is a hodgepodge of both and though I have not addedto the collection in some time when I do find them they are affordable andthe set is doable. Drawback - not 1 but 2 Ted Williams cards, DiMaggio, Reese, Ott, Rizzuto, Foxx and the Slaughter/Mize can set for back a bit. Now if you are looking at options from the Topps era I would suggest the following: 1952 - 55 Redman - Annual sets of 50 cards with 25 from each league - I believe these to be the most beautiful production of baseball cards ever produced. There are plenty of ways to collect the sets; with or without tabs, you can focus on the March/June date variations or you can just collect one of the 200 cards available and leave it at that. 1954 Red Heart - A regional set of 33 cards that has a very nice look. The cards are affordable but there is a Mantle and you will pay Mantle prices. The Mantle, Musial and Snider cards are the key to this set. Exhibit cards - Avaliable from the dead ball era through the 80's there aremany choices and ways to collect Exhibit cards, I would suggest to start with the "monster" 1947 - 66 set of 336 cards with various levels of scarcity based upon when the card was distributed with some cards only in production for a few years and other printed for many years. Doable but like any set with scarcity can be frustrating (just ask anyone still looking for a Yazor Mantle portrait card). So whether you wanted it or not you get my input on the subject - I guess my most compelling advise would be to collect something that you like and don't worry about if it was doable or not at the end of the day - it's only cardboard. A beautiful color set that is readily available. ================= Date: Tue, 30 Jul 2013 03:31:35 -0000 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: "B-999" Subject: Six 52's on E-Bay for $9 Pretty good at under $2 each -free shipping... http://www.ebay.com/itm/6-Filler-cards-1952-Topps-3-84-96-117-107-121-Lo\ Subject: 'twas the night before the National 'twas the night before the National And throughout Steve's house It was chaos as usual Said my lovely spouse Every inch of the desk was buried With cards for you guys All year I've been focused On getting good buys I pulled cards for Sal, Spike and Nick Rhyme would be better if we had a Rick For guru there's non-sport Which fills Mike Rich with hate Until Kent sends me more lists He'll just have to wait Geno, Dahms, and Richard D Can't make it this year At Hubbard's on Thursday We'll toast them with beer Friday's the Cubs game And the Net 54 dinner With choices like that Everyone's a winner Time to end this tale And turn out the light Wish you were here To all a good night. Hi All, I just picked up a 1948 Bowman of Bobby Thomson - but it's in color??? I thought I read there were a few of these (maybe fours cards?) that were some sort of proofs ... but can't find this in the SCD (and I have no idea where I would have gotten this from if not from there). Does anyone have a clue what this is? From: john harrell To: OBCRamblings Sent: Monday, July 29, 2013 6:59 AM Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] Opinions?? I'd recommend the 34-36 Diamond Stars set. Part of that involves putting my wantlist on Microsoft Word so I have a hard copy at the show. I was just putting my Non-Sport in a document and it caught my attention that Inow need two pages in the document for my NON SPORT collection. That mademe think back to when I joined OBC, and only collected 57-80. Now, I havemost of the Topps complete and am most excited about trying to add to my PRE WAR collection. Unbelievable. Wouldn't have been possible with this great Happy hunting to all and can't wait to catch up with everyone. ================= Date: Wed, 31 Jul 2013 18:42:46 -0700 (PDT) To: OBC Ramblings From: Geno Wagner Subject: National request Fellas -- My 11 year old son really got into the Stanley Cup playoffs with me this year. My older two have never been that intrigued by sports, so it was nice to have a "buddy" to watch the Blackhawks games with. Zachary turned out to be a rabid Hawks fan, and really loved watching #29 Bryan Bickell. Bickell is the "man in the middle" on the Hawks front line...stands in front of the net, takes and gives shots, no front teeth. When he scores, he always get the same silly look on his face. Anyway, Zachary loves him. Since the National is in Chicago, if anybody sees any poster or card of Bickell, please pick it up and I'll pay you back. We bought packs of cards, but never got him...not even sure if he has a card. I'm going to get him a jersey for Christmas so he can where it to the games when the Hawks come to Denver, but I'd like to get something to stick on his wall or tape to his notebook...old school, like! I envy you guys...have fun!! Take Care,
