Set against the backdrop of two classic All-Star games, it is a story aboutpassions, perseverance and the strange, mystical role heroes play in our lives at every stage. It's about miracles, too. Both on the field and off. The year is 1934 and 11-year-old Solomon (Solly) Manus and his best friend Marco have hatched a bold plan to sneak into the All-Star baseball game to be held that year at the Polo Grounds in New York. With luck, guile and a few saved pennies and nickels squirreled away over the past several months, Solly and Marco hope to evade the ushers long enough to root their National League heroes home and perhaps share a hot dog or two if their meagerfinances hold up. Abby Sellers, a baseball-loving girl from the same neighborhood, is attending the game the more traditional way. Her father bought them tickets. And for Abby, on this field of great stars from both leagues, there is onlyone: the hard-drinking, fireballing Brooklyn Dodgers right-hander with themelodious name of Van Lingle Mungo. Boy and girl connect in that awkward, timeless ritual of adolescent courtship and along the way witness what remains one of the greatest feats inAll-Star Game history: New York Giants pitcher Carl Hubbell striking out Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Al Simmons and Joe Cronin, five Hall of Famers, in succession. But there is more to the game than that. There's Earl Averill and Mel Harder. Al Schacht and the pop fly that never comes down. There's Charlie Gehringer, Chuck Klein, Dizzy Dean, Lefty Gomez and Pepper Martin performingtheir own heroics. And through it all, there's Solly and Abby watching it unfold, inning by inning, pitch by pitch as they embark on their long road together that reaches a crossroads on the occasion of a second All-Star game, fifty years later. On the morning of the 1984 game, Solly is at a complete loss...both personally and professionally. He has just been fired from his scouting job, leaving him adrift from the game he loves for the first time in his adult life. Worse than that, Abby is in a coma from injuries suffered in a trafficaccident and there's little hope for a full recovery It is at this his lowest point when Solly is surprised to receive an invitation from the San Francisco Giants, his former employer, to come to Candlestick Park and attend the All Star Game celebrating Hubbell's great achievement...that same game where he and Abby connected. The call sends Solly on a mad search for pieces from his past that he hopes will reconnect him with both the game and his beloved girl who he's so afraid he's losing. And then there's Abby's old hero, Van Lingle Mungo, the losing pitcher of that 1934 contest who so disappointed her that day. Solly is convinced, against all logic, that Mungo can save the day for her ashe couldn't in 1934. And that becomes his quest, his hope for a miracle. Diamond Stars moves between these two classic All Star games, following Solly and Abby's story while introducing us to many of the players whose plaques fill the walls of the Hall of Fame. But through it all...the games, the players, the memories...there is Solly and Abby, their love story bookended by two All-Star games, their future clouded by doubt, their salvation in the improbable hands of a man who lost as many games as he won. Solly is convinced of this. His job now is to convince Van Lingle Mungo. ================= Date: Sun, 2 Jun 2013 05:01:41 -0700 (PDT) To: Peter , From: Geno Wagner Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] Gold Borders Awesome, Peter! I think not, but interesting anyway Lynn, Welcome to the Milton Bradley club. Bob Lemke wrote an SCD article a few years ago about the MB cards made by Topps that were part of games produced by Milton Bradley. There are 76 low skip-numbered '68 Topps baseball and 33 '67 Topps football cards involved with the brighter gold backs. (109 cards in total sounds like Lemke might have missed a card to get to a sheet of 110?) In fact they were printed together at the same time and you can see edges of the baseball cards on the football cards and vice versa. I've been working on completing this set ever since Lemke's article came out. Some of these have been quite elusive. I'll send you (and anyone else who requests it) a list of the cards involved. I have a few on my wantlist. They can be hard to distinguish sometimes from regular cards, but the funny edges are additional evidence. I was heavy into non-sport many years ago and had many dealings with Ron Wilson. He was a staight up guy and did alot of buying. I bought about 130 assorted Look 'n See cards cards from him in the early '90's that were advertized as coming from a vending box. When they arrived, I could not believe how crisp they!!! Unbelievable!! At any rate, at one point he dropped out or the hobby, and nobody heardfrom him for about 2 years. Since I had been ordering from him on and off for a few years, I called one day and was prepared to make an order from one of his old Wrapper ads. He told that he stopped putting in ads and was prepared to sell everything and get out of the hobby. What had happened was that he was preparing to make an offer on the 'collection' this major collector/dealor. The condition of his offer was that he sell everything except sets he wanted for his own personal enjoyment. Ron didn't want him to start selling again as a competitor. An agreement was made and Ron bought the massive pile of non-sports cards. A couple of months later the collector/dealor started selling cards that he had held back from Ron. He was so disgustedand disalussioned that he decided to get out of the hobby and move on to something else. I didn't talk to him again to see what happened to him. By the way, anyone who wants to pick up non-sports cards should check with ads in the Wrapper. Les Davis publishes it(I think still) and you can get a sample copy of it. It's a 1-man operation and he runs it out of his house. You can also put in a classified ad(rates are exremely reasonable). If you google 'The Wrapper' you should be able to get all the info. Regarding Civil War News, there was an emormous find about 20 years ago and prices dropped significantly(I won a 500 count mint lot for $1000). It looks as though a lot of these cards have been adsorbed by collectors and they are much tougher to find now. I just that members might be interested it what I found out. Strange hosted meetings on Wednesday across northern Alabama to call attention to potential claims for the very same business economic losses that are the subject of a high-profile BP legal battle, which will hit the region's appellate court on July 8. "I believe $500 million is just the tip of the iceberg," Strange said as he introduced the court-appointed BP claims administrator, Pat Juneau, who also attended the three meetings. Most of the 72,000 claims in Alabama have been filed by coastal businesses and individuals, Strange said. More than 4 million barrels of oil spilled into the Gulf over about three months, affecting the livelihoods of tens of thousands of people. "There is an erroneous perception that if you are not on the coast, you were not affected," said Brian Hilson, head of the Birmingham Business Alliance, in a city 292 miles (470 km) from Dauphin Island, Alabama's southern-most point. Juneau assured the audience of 50 people in Birmingham, the third stop of the day, that anyone in the state could make a claim if they proved a 15 percent loss during the time of spill. "It is a hell of a deal," Juneau said. "If you have something better coming into this state, bring it on!" Juneau told Reuters last month he expected a surge of late claims ahead of the deadline of April 22, 2014. BP has complained that under Juneau's watch, too many people who suffered no damage are making claims and "making a mockery" of the process. But Juneau responded on Wednesday: "I was invited by a state official to educate people in the north as a court official - I don't have a dog in the The Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans agreed to a BP appeal over the claims process, setting a hearing for July 8. That came after U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier in April found no reason to interfere with the payout process, despite BP complaints of frivolous and "fictitious" claims. BP had originally estimated the uncapped settlement would be somewhere in the range of $8 billion, but then expressed concerns about it rising far beyond that. The source of dispute for BP is the calculation of business economic losses, which account for $2 billion of $3.47 billion in claims deemed eligible so far, according to the website for the Deepwater Horizon Economic and Property Damages settlement. Nearly 185,000 claims have been submitted, the website said, and of those, 34,754 have been paid out for $2.4 billion, while nearly 9,000 more have been identified as eligible, adding another $1 billion-plus potentially to the total. The website said Alabama is third among the five Gulf states for claims, behind Florida and Louisiana, though the claimant assistance center in Mobile, Alabama, has handled the most. Here it is. I found OBC back in 1991 when the group was starting up on Prodigy. I had recovered my ubiquitous =91shoebox=92 and was looking for ways to gather cards so I could finish the sets I started with my older brother in the early1960's. Finding OBC was a gift from above and an affirmation of my choiceto keep the cards and not give them away or sell them off. I was able to get a huge kick start on completing the 1962 thru 1964 sets. My shoebox also had a bunch of doubles in it from those years =96 so I had cards I coulduse to hit back. In 1993 I went back on the road with the Covenant Players (Christian Theater Company I worked with from 1968 to 2005) and no longer had access to the internet =96 so my collecting and participation with OBC ended. Most of you remember those early 1990=92s days of hard wire phone connections and =91super fast=92 2400 baud modems. In 1997 my status changed =96 I took an office job outside of Covenant Players and was in one place for a year and a half. At that point I got back onto the internet. Out of curiosity I did a search for OBC and found what the group had become in the 4 years I had been away. No longer an undercover group that made purchases by =91trading George Washington's=92 =96 OBC had a webpage filled with features and a bunch of like minded old baseball card collecting members. Many more than the couple dozen names and addressesthat fit on that single sheet of 8 =BD x 11 white paper and was delivered to me and to each member via snail mail in 1991=85 The welcome back I received really blew me away as people from all over, most of which I had never met or communicated with, sent me card after card =96 on the my want list and off. The oldest card in my collection at that point was a 1957 Topps Billy Loes (Orioles) =96 that quickly changed and...well, you all can imagine the kinds of things I received... I did not have enough in my dupes box to hit all the fellows back so one day I started to write =91thank you=92 stories. About the cards I had received, me when Iwas a kid collecting and =96 well, all kinds of stuff. Before long I ran out of ideas for what cards could do when they came to life inside the box or envelope that had been mailed to me so I started a different kind of story. I had no idea where this story would go =96 actually thought of it as completed when I finished my first one page effort. I had recently received my first T205 card. Not certain from where =96 Jim Montgomery most likely butperhaps I purchased it from an OBC friendly dealer (John Morrison?)... Anyway, I had it and had seen others online and I had probably seen some of Josh's collection and I became totally enamored with pre-war cards =96 so that was what this new story was about. A few weeks/months later a second chapter found its way to the page and a batch of some 200 plus Gold Border baseball cards were passed from one individual to the next. It was at that point that I decided to follow this group of T205 cards and tell about the people who owned them and how they got into the hands of one person and then the next - telling the story of those owners and how the cards effected them and figured in their lives... This story went on for a couple of years, growing bit by bit - each chaptersent out as an OBC ramblings post - I managed to write 9 chapters this way, taking the cards through the hands of five different owners. I also found that a couple of the card-holders (Solly and Abby) were strongly attracted to each other (and I was attracted to them) so I started focusing on the couple. This writing was a real joy for me. But then life interrupted (as it seems to=85) and while working on Chapter 10, the well dried up, the muse was quiet and my writing stopped. Not certain why =96 probably stuff going on in and around me. I had never written anything close to a book before. Perhaps it was fear=85 I was also a bit overwhelmed by the response of many of my fellow OBCers who were very generous in expressing their enjoyment of the story so perhaps I got intimidated. One fine OBC individual offered to publish the book on the spot =96 when it was finished to my satisfaction =96 he even bought special paper and printed out all that I had written so far =96 with the imageof a T205 card beside each chapter header =96 I still have it and it=92s still I went back to the story over and over again for the next few years, tryingto pick it back up where I had left off and continue. There were several false starts and ideas that kind of went nowhere. The first 9 chapters worked for me but I just couldn't get my main male character (Solly - who was now a minor league ball player) onto the field and into the game.... Well =96 I could go on and on and provide more details but now I think I should fast forward to 2005. I had just left the Covenant Players after thirty-some years, was bartending for my sisters and wondering what I was going to do to fill the creative gap in my life. That is when I finally worked up the nerve to ask Denice=92s Cousin Jim (Cousin in-law?) if he would read my story and tell me whathe Quick background: Jim is an Emmy winning writer. He has been a Journalistfor the LA Times and also wrote a lot for TV =96 mostly daytime Soaps =96 both as a regular writer and head writer for a number of shows. Even more importantly - Jim loves old baseball the same way I love it =96 same eras and same kind of reading =96 so we talk a lot and share books. He collects some cards but not many =96 Jim did accumulate a few artifacts but has recently let a lot of that go. Denice and I had been seeing Jim and his wife Doree regularly for a couple of years at this point - after talking about doing so at family events for a long, long time (been married to Denice 38 years). So =96 Jim, being a good sport, agrees to read my story. A couple weeks later I get an e-mail that leaves me weeping at the computer. Jim loved the story and tells me something like =96 =91=85you don=92t have to worry what you will do with the rest of your life =96 you are a writer=85 you will finish this story and it will get published=85!=92 Of course, I was blown away. Later Jim confided that he was really gritting his teeth when I asked him to read my story =96 but he liked me and of course Denice so he did it anyway=85 He was stunned that it turned out so well! So =96 from 2005 to 2009 I went back to writing what I now officially called =91Gold Borders=92 with Jim as my mentor. I would write, he would read and give me notes and I would continue writing. At that point I decided that I wanted to follow the T205=92s from their inception in 1911 to 2011 =96 seeing everywhere they go over 100 years. I pushed on for about four yearsand produced more pages but not at any kind of alarming pace. By Summer of 2009 I had covered the years from 1918 to 1975 and the book was closing in on 400 pages. At that point Jim counseled that it might be too much for a first time novelist to write such a saga for his first book =96 and it might be better to concentrate on one part of the story. He suggested I go back to the beginning and start over =96 taking what I had written already and fleshing it out =96 adding more details and background on the people whohad become the main characters of the piece and seeing where that took me.He is really a brilliant teacher =96 letting me find my way and find my own voice as a writer. Such a gift to have him work with me=85 Well =96 I went back to the beginning and pushed on =96 lingering over eachchapter and adding more along the way. When I had the characters find their way to the 1934 All Star game in New York I found something that surprised me. The game was not just about Carl Hubble and his five strike outs. It was a tremendous baseball game and an event that set the tone for all the All Star games to come =96 in spite of the fact that it was not the firstbut the second All Star Game. I communicated this to Jim and asked him how much I should write about what I had found. He told me to write all I could =96 so=85 80 pages later I had finished Solly and Abby=92s experience at that ball game and then moved on. About a month later when the Denice and I went out for supper with Jim and Doree =96 Jim and I came up with the idea of using the 34 All Star Game as the foundation of a book. We had bothcome up with the idea separately and when I mentioned it to Jim at supper he explained to me how he had already been thinking about the same thing=85. Another affirmation and blessing for me and motivator to continue on=85 So for the next year =96 I continued to write but with a different purpose.I embellished what I had written on that AS game and then came up with the idea of putting the book in two All Star Games =96 1934 when Carl Hubbellstruck out five Hall Of Famers and Solly and Abby were 11 and then fifty years later in 1984 when Carl Hubbell threw out the first pitch and Abby andSolly were 61=85 On November 11th of 2011 (11/11/11) I finished my draft of this version of Gold Borders. Jim read the finished story, gave me notes and I went back at it. He was trying to help me cut down some of the dross and get to the story =96 I tried to do it but just couldn=92t let go of certain lines and sequences and=85Well, if you have written anything I am certain you get the picture. Theideas and bits and situations are your =91babies=92, if you will, and it is very hard to cut them off =96 even if it is necessary. This process continued until May of 2012 when Jim asked me if I would be interested in having him taking a pass at the story. We had been working on it together for six years now and all that time he had hesitated from doing any writing on it because he wanted it to be in my voice. Not that it was finished he felt he could preserve my original story and do what he had done for a living for years =96 edit and re-write and come up with additions to the story that would make it fly along. I did not have to think about it long. It was perfect. Especially since I am a person who likes to work with others rather than alone. So at this point I had a partner in this =91Gold Border=92 book that soon became =91Diamond Stars=92 =96 Jim took a couple of months to go through it and I loved the result. We worked on it together for a few months more =96 in the midst of other events in our busy lives =96 and have just emerged with what we feel is a finished story that works and says what we want it to say=85 There are many more potential stories that can come out of all I have written and I hope we have a chance to tackle those =96 but for now it is all about selling this book and getting it into the hands of readers. I hope that can happen soon. UPDATE: I just got a call from Jim =96 and he told me the wonderful news that we have an Literary Agent! Her name is Diane Nine and she works out ofWashington DC. Once again things came together in a miraculous way and I was blessed in a way I hadn=92t expected. The contracts are on the way to Jim and I and once we sign we will be walking through whatever is next =96 together. It may take some time to get all the ducks in a row and get the book published in the traditional way but Jim and I both agreed early on that if this was possible =96 it was what we wanted=85 A final note (if you are still reading =96 thank you!) about me. My parents were divorced when I was three years old and so when my mother re-marriedI took on my Step-Father=92s name. Then, in the third grade I started using my middle name, because there were too many boys in my class with the same first name as me=85 So I have lived most of my life as Peter Iversen. But I decided awhile ago =96 that if I get this book published I would use my birth name (and the name on my Passport) =96 and so =96 If you want to recognize me when you see me in print, my new/old name (perhaps =91Nome De Plume=92?) =97Marc Peter Reyna=97 I am looking forward to going through this next part of my life with this old/new Thanks again to all who are reading =96 for adding the sauce to my life that made this dream come together. No longer an undercover group that made purchases by =E2trading George Washington's=E2=99 =E2=93 OBC had a webpage filled with features and a bunch of likeminded old baseball card collecting members. Many more than the couple dozen names and addresses that fit on that single sheet of 8 =BD x 11 whitepaper and was delivered to me and to each member via snail mail in 1991=E2=A6 > The welcome back I received really blew me away as people from all over, most of which I had never met or communicated with, sent me card after card=E2=93 on the my want list and off. The oldest card in my collection atthat point was a 1957 Topps Billy Loes (Orioles) =E2=93 that quickly changed and... well, you all can imagine the kinds of things I received... I did not have enough in my dupes box to hit all the fellows back so one day I started to write =E2thank you=E2=99 stories. About the cards I had received, me when I was a kid collecting and =E2=93 well, all kinds of stuff. Before long I ran out of ideas for what cards could do when they came to life inside the box or envelope that had been mailed to me so I started a different kind of story. > I had no idea where this story would go =E2=93 actually thought of it as completed when I finished my first one page effort. I had recently received my first T205 card. Not certain from where =E2=93 Jim Montgomery most likely but perhaps I purchased it from an OBC friendly dealer (John Morrison?)... Anyway, I had it and had seen others online and I had probably seen some of Josh's collection and I became totally enamored with pre-war cards =E2=93 so that was what this new story was about. > A few weeks/months later a second chapter found its way to the page and abatch of some 200 plus Gold Border baseball cards were passed from one individual to the next. It was at that point that I decided to follow this group of T205 cards and tell about the people who owned them and how they got into the hands of one person and then the next - telling the story of thoseowners and how the cards effected them and figured in their lives... > This story went on for a couple of years, growing bit by bit - each chapter sent out as an OBC ramblings post - I managed to write 9 chapters this way, taking the cards through the hands of five different owners. I also found that a couple of the card-holders (Solly and Abby) were strongly attracted to each other (and I was attracted to them) so I started focusing on thecouple. This writing was a real joy for me. > But then life interrupted (as it seems to=E2=A6) and while working on Chapter 10, the well dried up, the muse was quiet and my writing stopped. Not certain why =E2=93 probably stuff going on in and around me. I had never written anything close to a book before. Perhaps it was fear=E2=A6 > I was also a bit overwhelmed by the response of many of my fellow OBCers who were very generous in expressing their enjoyment of the story so perhaps I got intimidated. One fine OBC individual offered to publish the book onthe spot =E2=93 when it was finished to my satisfaction =E2=93 he even bought special paper and printed out all that I had written so far =E2=93 with the image of a T205 card beside each chapter header =E2=93 Istill have it and it=E2=99s still beautiful... > I went back to the story over and over again for the next few years, trying to pick it back up where I had left off and continue. There were severalfalse starts and ideas that kind of went nowhere. The first 9 chapters worked for me but I just couldn't get my main male character (Solly - who was now a minor league ball player) onto the field and into the game.... > Well =E2=93 I could go on and on and provide more details but now I think I should fast forward to 2005. > I had just left the Covenant Players after thirty-some years, was bartending for my sisters and wondering what I was going to do to fill the creative gap in my life. That is when I finally worked up the nerve to ask Denice=E2=99s Cousin Jim (Cousin in-law?) if he would read my story and tell me what he thought. > Quick background: Jim is an Emmy winning writer. He has been a Journalistfor the LA Times and also wrote a lot for TV =E2=93 mostly daytime Soaps =E2=93 both as a regular writer and head writer for a number of shows.Even more importantly - Jim loves old baseball the same way I love it =E2=93 same eras and same kind of reading =E2=93 so we talk a lot and share books. He collects some cards but not many =E2=93 Jim did accumulatea few artifacts but has recently let a lot of that go. Denice and I had been seeing Jim and his wife Doree regularly for a couple of years at this point - after talking about doing so at family events for a long, long time (been married to Denice 38 years). > So =E2=93 Jim, being a good sport, agrees to read my story. A couple weeks later I get an e-mail that leaves me weeping at the computer. Jim loved the story and tells me something like =E2=93 =E2=E2=A6you don=E2=99t have to worry what you will do with the rest of your life =E2=93 you are a writer=E2=A6 you will finish this story and it will get published=E2=A6!=E2=99 Of course, I was blown away. Later Jim confided that he was really gritting his teeth when I asked him to read my story =E2=93 but he liked me and of course Denice so he did it anyway=E2=A6 Hewas stunned that it turned out so well! > So =E2=93 from 2005 to 2009 I went back to writing what I now officially called =E2Gold Borders=E2=99 with Jim as my mentor. I would write, he would read and give me notes and I would continue writing. At thatpoint I decided that I wanted to follow the T205=E2=99s from their inception in 1911 to 2011 =E2=93 seeing everywhere they go over 100 years. Ipushed on for about four years and produced more pages but not at any kindof alarming pace. By Summer of 2009 I had covered the years from 1918 to 1975 and the book was closing in on 400 pages. At that point Jim counseled that it might be too much for a first time novelist to write such a saga forhis first book =E2=93 and it might be better to concentrate on one partof the story. He suggested I go back to the beginning and start over =E2=93 taking what I had written already and fleshing it out =E2=93 adding more details and background on the people who had become the main characters of the piece and seeing where that took me. He is really a brilliant teacher =E2=93 letting me find my way and find my own voice as a writer. Such a gift to have him work with me=E2=A6 > Well =E2=93 I went back to the beginning and pushed on =E2=93 lingering over each chapter and adding more along the way. When I had the characters find their way to the 1934 All Star game in New York I found somethingthat surprised me. The game was not just about Carl Hubble and his five strike outs. It was a tremendous baseball game and an event that set the tonefor all the All Star games to come =E2=93 in spite of the fact that it was not the first but the second All Star Game. I communicated this to Jim and asked him how much I should write about what I had found. He told me towrite all I could =E2=93 so=E2=A6 80 pages later I had finished Solly and Abby=E2=99s experience at that ball game and then moved on. Abouta month later when the Denice and I went out for supper with Jim and Doree=E2=93 Jim and I came up with the idea of using the 34 All Star Game asthe foundation of a book. We had both come up with the idea separately andwhen I mentioned it to Jim at supper he explained to me how he had alreadybeen thinking about the same thing=E2=A6. Another affirmation and blessing for me and motivator to continue on=E2=A6 > So for the next year =E2=93 I continued to write but with a different purpose. I embellished what I had written on that AS game and then came up with the idea of putting the book in two All Star Games =E2=93 1934 whenCarl Hubbell struck out five Hall Of Famers and Solly and Abby were 11 andthen fifty years later in 1984 when Carl Hubbell threw out the first pitchand Abby and Solly were 61=E2=A6 On November 11th of 2011 (11/11/11) I finished my draft of this version of Gold Borders. > Jim read the finished story, gave me notes and I went back at it. He was trying to help me cut down some of the dross and get to the story =E2=93I tried to do it but just couldn=E2=99t let go of certain lines and sequences and=E2=A6 Well, if you have written anything I am certain you getthe picture. The ideas and bits and situations are your =E2babies=E2=99, if you will, and it is very hard to cut them off =E2=93 even if it is necessary. This process continued until May of 2012 when Jim asked meif I would be interested in having him taking a pass at the story. > We had been working on it together for six years now and all that time hehad hesitated from doing any writing on it because he wanted it to be in my voice. Not that it was finished he felt he could preserve my original story and do what he had done for a living for years =E2=93 edit and re-write and come up with additions to the story that would make it fly along. I did not have to think about it long. It was perfect. Especially since I am a person who likes to work with others rather than alone. So at this point I had a partner in this =E2Gold Border=E2=99 book that soon became=E2Diamond Stars=E2=99 =E2=93 Jim took a couple of months to go through it and I loved the result. We worked on it together for a few months more =E2=93 in the midst of other events in our busy lives =E2=93and have just emerged with what we feel is a finished story that works andsays what we want it to say=E2=A6 > There are many more potential stories that can come out of all I have written and I hope we have a chance to tackle those =E2=93 but for now it is all about selling this book and getting it into the hands of readers. I hope that can happen soon. > UPDATE: I just got a call from Jim =E2=93 and he told me the wonderfulnews that we have an Literary Agent! Her name is Diane Nine and she works out of Washington DC. Once again things came together in a miraculous way and I was blessed in a way I hadn=E2=99t expected. The contracts are on the way to Jim and I and once we sign we will be walking through whatever isnext =E2=93 together. It may take some time to get all the ducks in a row and get the book published in the traditional way but Jim and I both agreed early on that if this was possible =E2=93 it was what we wanted=E2=A6 > A final note (if you are still reading =E2=93 thank you!) about me. Myparents were divorced when I was three years old and so when my mother re-married I took on my Step-Father=E2=99s name. Then, in the third grade Istarted using my middle name, because there were too many boys in my classwith the same first name as me=E2=A6 So I have lived most of my life asPeter Iversen. But I decided awhile ago =E2=93 that if I get this book published I would use my birth name (and the name on my Passport) =E2=93and so =E2=93 If you want to recognize me when you see me in print, my new/old name (perhaps =E2Nome De Plume=E2=99?) is: > =E2=94Marc Peter Reyna=E2=94 > I am looking forward to going through this next part of my life with thisold/new > Thanks again to all who are reading =E2=93 for adding the sauce to my life that made this dream come together. > Marc Peter ================= Date: Mon, 10 Jun 2013 07:48:02 -0400 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: Doug Subject: Thousands of cards arrive over the weekend! I know several of you from VCT, and some of you I=E2=99ve traded with over the years, but there abunch of you I don't know and I look forward to getting to know you. My #1 priority is my 1952 topps set. I=E2=99m not only working on a master set, but am also working to figure out the 1952 Topps layouts (I=E2=99ve traded many emails with George on this!). So if you have any insights on the set, I'd love to hear them. My HIGHEST priority wants are 1952 Topps grey backs #161, #180, and #189. I know trading is not common =E2=93 but if you have any of these let me know! I=E2=99ll try to make an offer for them that youcan=E2=99t Although not on my lists, I=E2=99m also very interested in any 1952 topps odd balls (blank backs, missing colors, print errors, top-to-bottom miscuts #1-80, etc.). Especialy if they give insights to how the set was laid I=E2=99m just started collecting the 1954 topps grey backs - and these are probably my second highest priority at this point. In general, I know my want lists are somewhat hard to hit on the baseball front, but you should find the football and basketball are not too difficult. I know the philosophy around here is RAOK, but if you send me something, you can expect that I will try to send return cards (even though it=E2=99snot required). It=E2=99s just the way I am. I figure one RAOK deserves another. If you have impossible to hit lists, I may have to pay it forward to someone else in the group. But if someone sends me something, a package is going out somewhere (maybe even more than one ;-)! My time is pretty limited between work and my 1 year old son, so if I ever fail to returnan email ... send me a reminder! He figured if anyone would want them, it would be me. As I put these into an album this morning, I noticed that most of the cards are on dark gray card stock with hard to read numbers, like the $%&*# 1975-76 basketball cards. But I have four which are much brighter on the back. And these four are numbered out of 72 cards. The 1976 Topps set has 88 cards. Are these OPC? It doesn't say so anywhere. Are they variations? Can't tell that either. And nothing in my non-sport reference book. After a half hour of searching, I learned that Peter stuck me with AUSTRALIAN Star Trek cards, distributed by some company called Scanlens. Other people collect these but I won't. I found a lot of my information from the PSA set registry where some guy is bragging about his set. I wasn't impressed but that is a different topic. Now if these were sports cards, I'd send two to Mike Rich. Well, after making sure he doesn't already have them. But he doesn't collect non-sports. Is anyone else interested in these? I probably have some other Australian cards floating around here. When they bubble up to the top of the stew, I can pull them out and put them in the shoe box labeled "mail to OBCers (box #3)". In your favor, I think many blank back T206 were hand cut, do the fact that yours looks carved is a good thing.
Some folks love these oddballs and I have been shocked at the price levels that a true blank back might fetch (or a miscut or ghost!)
Best of luck with your gold mine!

Grading would be the best thing to do with this one. If it comes back with confirmation that it's not skinned and is in fact a blank back then you will see a very nice price for it. Rare backs and printing oddities are huge with many T206 collectors right now. Personally I think blank backs fit in both of these categories since the cards were never distributed with a blankback. Long story short, it appears that my son is exhibiting manic behavior and is probably bipolar. This has not been officially diagnosed yet - we are in the process of making that happen. If anyone out there has any experience with this, I would love a phone call. I have so many questions, and quite frankly my wife and I are feeling overwhelmed. I am hopeful my quick note isn't seen as inappropriate. I know there are people in my corner of the world that I can also ask questions of, and I fully intend to do that as well. I know this is a baseball card group. I also know that OBC is the most unique and personal group of baseball card collectors that exists, and some very close personal bonds have been forged. That's why I'm reaching out to the group at large. I just want to hear as many different perspectives as my brain can handle so I can formulate a plan on how to go forward with my son's new reality. I need to know how to talk to him, how not to talk to him and how to best support him. I hope that makes sense. On Saturday the wedding was nice, very small church, and reception 30 min away out in the country at a fire house. The only opportunity I had to do something card- wise was one hour on sunday Tom Housley came down from dayton (about an hour I think) We had a very nice visit in the hotel lobby. Lots in common (other than cards)..as both of us became first time grandparents this year. Tom hit me with a handful of 75 hits Saturday night we went to a high end mall, and ate a big meal at the Cheesecake Everyone in the family loves cheesecake (except me!) Sunday afternoon we visited the Aquarium, as my son is big into fish and aquariums...very nice tour but finished way to early to go all the way back to the hotel in sharonville, then back downtown for the reds/cardinals game. Now on to the game..how lucky were we (as cardinal fans) to have the el birdos in town the same weekend we were there! Stadium was very nice, sat in upper deck behind home plate. Wanted to sit in section below where we were but only singles available when I bought a month ago. Was surprised to see lots of empty seats in the upper deck at the ends..even for an ESPN game of the week game... used to near sellouts at STL (from memory)Reds took early 2-0 lead...cards tied it up a few innings later...then reds back up 4-2...cards tied in 8th I think. It was quite different being the visiting fan when everyone else cheering for the reds... most of the fans were pretty decent with us..just a few dirty looks here and there when we cheered for cards. saw aroldis chapan pitch 9th, surely lots of heat...he went 1 inning for the 9th, not sure why he could not do two with a tie game? Trevor Rosenthal for the cards came in for the 9th and 10th and shut em down..he has high heat as well...and does not cost $50M Cards score 7 in the 10th including a Holliday grand slam. It was fun seeing the reds fans disgusted and leaving early! My grandson (7 weeks old then) did great..only time he was upset was in the7th inning stretch when a fellow played God Bless America on a saxophone...it was load and piercing...so little man cried and mom anddad took him out to walk a little...new member of Cardinal nation! As far as food goes, most of my family said the food in memphis is better...I had some La Rosa's pizza that was very good though Gift shop...no stadium post card?? only one with the logo?? Not what I wanted..bummer..might have to look online for that souvenier. I nice baseball trip to share with the family, good memories.. thanks again tom for the meet and wantlist help. Anyway along with somebeat up vintage hockey and football cards, he sent me a sample of a 1965 Topps baseball card, pretty nice except it's "hole-punched". He has (well had) 123 of them, and the price was right so I bought them. > Now here is the question, this card is hole-punched, but the "punch" is not a circle. It's more "L" shaped, and I've seen cards "hole-punched" with this "L" shape before. Does anyone know what the purpose of the "L" shape hole-punch is? The asking price is $80 for the pair ($30 + $50) but when I made a low ball offer of $35, the automated response was that I needed to offer at least $40. You can see actual scans of the cards on the website. I haven't decided if I will make another offer. If you want to get these yourself, go ahead. I've been kind of off the OBC radar for the past few months thanks to otherthings going on. Mostly good, I should add....vacations, etc! I've beeen jealously reading all the posts about the upcoming National. I had such a terrific time in Chicago in 2011 and had hoped to be able to do so again this year, but unfortunately it wasn't to be. Which brings me to a request. I've put together a shortened version of my wantlist (single page of A4) inthe hope that some of you might pick up a few things on my behalf. Steve Rittenberg has already said that he would try to find some stuff for me - ashe always does, and I very much appreciate it!! - but I thought the more the merrier (and the more chance of hits!). I've attached a copy of my list to this email. Here's a few supporting notes: Condition/Price: Usual OBC rules apply. Cheap, and OBC condition....G/VG would be terrific! I try my best to avoid complete disasters condition wide, but I'm generally happy to tolerate a crease or two, a pen/pencil mark (as long as its not overtly defacing the card), and even a hole punch (preferably less than 1" diameter). Cards on the list/Priorities: There's a bunch of commons and semi-stars on the list provided, mainly among the 1957-59 baseball lists and the 1968-1971 Hockey. There are a lot of star cards and big ticket items too though. Ingeneral, its quantity over quality for me. I can pick up the stars individually on auction sites...its the commons I have difficulty with! The biggest priorities on the list are the 1962T Green Tints, 1966T and 1967T. There are only 9 greenies left, and 5 each from '66 and '67 (all hi#s I'm afraid!). The Twins team and the Choo Choo Coleman card arethe toughest from '66, and the '67T Brooks Robinson is the sticking point from that set. If anyof those could be found at a reasonable price...... Lastly, I'm never too far away from the internet whether it be on my PC at home or on my phone when I'm out. If something special comes up that you think I might be interested in, chances are I could respond to an email within a very short time. I haven't really looked up my cards for value since the 90's when I subscribed to Beckett and Baseball Cards Magazine. Now that I am rummaging through everything once again, I'd love a good resource. One member mentioned SCD annual. I would like it to include the 4 major sports. It would also help to include a good amount of Oddball sets. Any advice is appreciated! ================= To: Date: Sat, 29 Jun 2013 07:22:05 -0500 From: "George Vrechek" Subject: Re: price guide advice I've stayed with the SCD Vintage Catalog - good to read about the obscure sets and the prices seem believable for what we collect. Have a 2007 Becket - but if you don't collect the UV, it's a 90% waste. Also the high book values of the Becket are often a little higher - because they go by MT - whereas the SCD uses NRMT (I believe), and has 3 levels, compared to Beckets 2. Also - I got the SCD Vintage after reading all the comments here on the subject a year ago or so. It was the last SCD catalog that Bob Lemke had full editorial control over. Starting in 2012 and continuing this year there are a number of omissions of sets in the previous editions and the listing of sets is changed, making it hard to find some sets. I got the 2012 and wish I hadn't . The 2013 is even worse. The 2011 also had a CD version included with it. ================= Date: Sat, 29 Jun 2013 17:39:44 -0400 To: obc ramblings From: Matthew Glidden Subject: My own 1941 set story I think Josh Levine's "How to buy a 1941 Play Ball set for $300" is one of the definitive OBC stories and well worth a read if you haven't heard it. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/OBC-Ramblings/message/24359 As cool as that year's pastel Play Ball set is--great names, cool design, all three DiMaggio brothers--it's not the only 1941 issue with OBC connections. 1941 Double Play's 75 cards featured many of the same stars on somewhat larger cards, but its 2-on-1 layout encouraged many collectors to cut them in half, becoming a boon for us (and low-grade collectors in general). Some OBCers collect ONLY half-cards and cut singles still turn up in $1 (or cheaper) boxes at shows. A couple years back, not long after I first read Josh's Double Play story, a cut-in-half 1941 Double Play set appeared on eBay. As luck would "halve" it (haha), my winning bid was ALSO $300. It felt a little eerie, like "1941 + OBC = 300" was an OBC tautology. Once in hand, I first thought to upgrade the Double Plays to whole cards where possible, but had a change of heart before long, as leaving them in halves felt truer to the whole set. (As they say when you "upgrade" Tipton Mints, which way do you go?) Next up, has an OBCer ever seen a 1941 GOUDEY set for $300? Probably not, but it'd finish the trifecta... P.S. I'm closing my Double Play story by posting the (partially upgraded) cut-in-half Double Play back to eBay (with my other recent listings at http://www.ebay.com/sch/late_innings/m.html). We'll see if it still goes for $300 these days! ================= Date: Sat, 29 Jun 2013 16:18:03 -0700 (PDT) To: "OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com" From: mark zentkovich Subject: 1962 Yaz baseball game available for trade nice looking old game pics and other info linked below on my page: http://markzent.weebly.com/1962-yaz-baseball-game-avail-for-trade.html please let me know if there is any interest. thanks, Mark Zentkovich ================= To: "DugoutTraders@yahoogroups.com" , Date: Sat, 29 Jun 2013 20:13:53 -0400 From: Taylor Schock Subject: Boxes of stuff available... speak up!
