Subject: Lenny Green traded OBCers -- While sifting through a few cards to pay my NCAA debts, I found a beautiful1959 Topps Lenny Green Traded card! Lenny went from the Orioles that off season, to the Washington Senators. Some kid must have certainly been following Lenny's career, because he was placed in a typewriter and had hisnew team name neatly typed onto the top of the card. That's a pretty up-to-speed youngster to update his cards like that that! So if #209 is onyour 1959 list and you don't mind the "Traded" version, just let me know and Lenny will be on the road again... Take Care, ================= To: Date: Wed, 10 Apr 2013 10:26:01 -0500 From: "George Vrechek" Subject: Reminder re Vintage vs UV A reminder guys, OBC Ramblings and Thanks postings are for vintage cards. Going through the "who's working on which sets" page seemed to be impractical since many lists on that page don't seem to have been updated recently. So, I'll do it this way. Here is a list of '79 Topps I have available. As I get my dupes box cataloged, and as interest in a set diminishes, I'll work back through my dupes box to either catch up with some of you, or to instigate trades, or to just help out. Well, today that show rolled around again - and Leo was there again today. I stopped by the table he was at, and ended up talking to him for at least 15 minutes one-on-one about anything & everything baseball-related. I even had to pull out myphone & look up a couple of things at Baseball-Reference.com (another guy was debating Chico over how old Barry Larkin was when he retired; Chico lost the debate). We talked about the best manager he played for (tie - Fred Hutchinson & Billy Martin), how players of his day played when hurt (Chico broke his hand when hit by a pitch but played three more innings after that), Billy Martin kicking the crap out of pitcher Dave Boswell when Billy managed the Twins (according to Chico, Boswell didn't show up in the clubhouse for a week after getting punched out by Billy. The fight started when Boswell used an insulting 4-letter word referring to Billy's heritage), and a lot of other things. He was a very nice guy & didn't mind just talking when he could have been charging people for autographs. I hope he comes back again next month. I've decided that if my HOM'er Dave Concepcion, ever makes it to the HOF, Leo will be my replacement nominee. Leo & Davey were half of the long Reds shortstop chain that lasted from the early 1950's all the way to 2004: Roy McMillan, Leo, Davey, & Barry Larkin, with a couple of one-year stopgaps included. Warning: Ramble ahead. I know the song is about the winter festivities but for me, the National is WAY better than Christmas. Hmm. A week with OBCers vs either driving to see my wife's family or cleaning the house and cooking for when they come here. It's not even close. And now that I live in Alabama, the National is about my only opportunity to go to a show and to see OBCers. This year's National is in Chicago. The official dates for the National are Wednesday evening, July 31 thru Sunday August 4. MY National will start the previous Sunday or Monday because I like to be at the front of the line. :-) And though I try to be among the first in the door on TUESDAY morning, Ron Perry still finds deals I didn't even know were out there. Note to self: Ask if I can shadow him this year. If you haven't been to a National, you must go at least once. Though the show is open 4 days, many of us never get to see everything there. If I could afford it, I'd pay for random OBCers to come in to the show. Maybe I'll do a fundraiser one of these years. The website for the show is http://www.nsccshow.com/ Tickets are pricey but we've worked out a couple of ways around that. I have to start doing my own leg work now. I feel like I'm behind but that's probably because I've been thinking about this National since I arrived home last year. There's a dedicated server for the National. See above for details. Maybe Bob Reed administers it? There's a list of who will be attending the National, maintained by Sal Domino. Tell the rest of us if you even plan on going so we can pull dupes for you ahead of time. In addition to all the activities during there day, there is usually a night that people go to a baseball game, a dinner hosted by the group Net54 (last year was my first time there and I recommend it) and an OBC swap night. Bring all the dupes you can carry and beware of flying cardboard. I'll be there with probably two handtrucks full of all the stuff that I never get around to mailing during the year. It's amazing to see 15-20 OBCers in the room. Rookies, prepare to be intimidated. I can't wait for the National to get here. Well, actually I need to because I'm still putting cards away from last year. And the year before. And I have DS stuff for Friar and Brock from Baltimore '10 that is still here. I can't begin to explain why. That's probably the subject for a different ramble. Here's what I added: 1955 Topps All-American Football Set: I've always wanted to start this set after I received a reprint of one of these cards. I'm a huge college football fan (I'm a UGA alum so I can't help it ;-) and I really got interested in the history of college football when I worked at UGA for about 15 years. But it looks like this is a very popular/tough set. Anyone have any feedback/experience with this set they want to share? 1964 Philadelphia Football Set: I've been wanting to work on a 60's football set from this era since I don't have one. This set doesn't look too tough since it's just the NFC. Thanks to John Dahms for getting me started! I'm assuming it wasn't too much of a regional issue so that cards will be easily available? 1965 Topps Football Set: I've stayed away from this set for some time thinking it's too tough with the Namath rookie and lots of short prints. But I have the 1969 Topps Basketball set and I love the similar look of these 1965 tall boy football! Plus it would give me the AFC cards of the 60's era, to complement the 1964 NFC Philly FB set. So am I biting off too much by adding this football set too? 1954 Topps Look 'N See Set: Kent is sending me a couple cards from this set and I've been wanting to add a 1950's non-sport set to my list for awhile. The set looks really cool, but also pretty tough. Anyone else working on it and have any comments on it's toughness as far as scarcity (I had some trouble finding a website that was dedicated to all the non-sport issues from the 1950's/1960's, which kind of suprised me)? 1957 Topps Space Cards: I really wanted to work on a 1950's space set. The Mars Attack set was my first choice till I saw the movie which for some reason spoiled my interest in those cards. So I chose the Space Cards. Anyone else working on this set? 1962 Topps Civil War News Set: I'm a big history buff so this choice was a no brainer for me. Plus I lived in the Deep South for much of my life and there is a lot of rich history down there about the War Between The States that I saw while I lived there. But I think this will be a very tough set because of the popularity of the war? OK ... after reading this list of new sets I've added to my wantlist I see I'm probably not being very realistic. But before I joined this group I never thought I'd ever be where I am as far as collecting baseball cards from the 1950's/1960's. So I'll just chalk this up to being a lifetime pursuit of happiness :-) BTW ... as you noticed ... I didn't add and vintage baseball sets. For now I figured I have plenty of those that need a lot of work so I opted to stay where I am at with those. In fact ... these may be the last sets I ever add to my wantlist ... famous last words :-) Any comments/advice on the sets I just added please feel free to email me off list (I'm not sure this listserver is mean't for vintage non-baseball card talk... I think I used to see some threads here about it ... but I'm not certain)? Thanks for taking the tome to read! Go Braves! I've finished all these except Civil War News (need 3) and Topps Space Cards (also need 3). I look forward to find a home for my dupes. :-) Well, I suck at sending but you will get cards eventually. 1955 AA: Go for the lowest grade possible. I finished this one last week. 1964 Philly: Don't over pay for the $2 commons. And make a chart. Back of 1965 is blue. Back of 1965 is red. Back of 1966 is green. Back of 1967 is brown. I think that is right but you should check. Look 'N See. Easy to find for $1 though there may be scarcity I don't know about I finished this set pretty easily. Space card: There are the blue Space cards and the Target Moon (orange). A few are tough. Civil War News: Lots of people have overpriced these. I think you can find them for a while for $1 or so. 1965 Football: Lots of pain in the neck shortprints. I dont think I have any dupes from this set. I will try to send a pile out to you. Hmm. How about at least before you start spending $$$$, nag me about what I have so I can at least pull it out and set it aside and you can cross them off and I will send them (some day). Lots of other guys are working on these too so at least you aren't reliant on me. I also have a reference book that I can scan for info on the non-sport sets. It has checklists and descriptions of the sets. I have electronic checklists for all the sets you've listed. I'm probably being too ambitious but I decided to add some early football and non-sport sets to my wantlist. The Mars Attack set was my first choice till I saw the movie which for some reason spoiled my interest in those cards. So I chose the Space Cards. Anyone else working on this set? 1962 Topps Civil War News Set: I'm a big history buff so this choice was a no brainer for me. Down to 2 on 71 Bazooka, a hit to my Delongs set, and38 Goudey. Knocking my 39 Playball down to 12, and 41 down to 3. Flipping my 62 Salada FB from a have to a wantlist. Post Canadian BB to 10, 52 Topps high number hit to take that set to 7. A 57-8 Parkhurst hockey of Jacques Plante on front and Jake Plante on back (surprising as he was on the Canadians). That set is now down to 10 also. A Sports king hit and my Quaker Sports Oddities set is now down to 4. Need more info for a type card hitof a Kellogg's All Wheat card, discussing sports topics. I picked up a type card of it, of #15 Fly Ball. Spent way more than I planned on, but somegreat hits. There is a reason this ios one of my fav shows of the year. Next possible show for FOOT members is May 18-9 Robert Morris in Pittsburgh. > Mike Rich ================= Date: Sun, 21 Apr 2013 11:43:46 -0500 To: "OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com" From: Steve Rittenberg Subject: Designated shoppers? Sounds like everyone had a great time at the Strongsville OH show. I'd love to go but google maps says its a 9 hour drive. As a married guy, that's not a possibility unless there is a lot of planning and negotiation. The closest show to me is Atlanta, about 4 hours away. And even that requires negotiation with the wife. I can count on one show a year -- the My lists are tough but if anyone ever wants to be a designated shopper at any show, I will make sure it is worth your while (eventually). Mike Rich sent out a heads-up several weeks ago so my wife and I thought this might be a good time to visit our Son, Jason, who lives in Cleveland. It worked out great as we spent Friday with Jason, she got to spend Saturday with the girl folk at the market and I got to spend Saturday at the card show with the guy folk. This just might turn out to be an annual thing. I got to the show just after opening time about 10:15. My main goal was to finish my '68 Topps set that was down to one... card #280 Mickey Mantle. It took about 5 minutes to spot one at JD Heckathron's table for a good price and the 1968 Topps set was finally done. It's taken a long time and I got a lot of help from OBC, so thanks to you all. My next goal was to try to knock off some of the big names that tend to clutter up my want list, and I did manage to eliminate a few names like Bob Gibson, Don Drysdale, Yogi Berra, Hank Aaron, Brooks Robinson, etc. It was a little after Noon when I spotted the first member of the FOOT contingent, Mark Talbot. We chatted, exchanged goodies, and Mark introduced me to John Dahms, whom although John had already sent me cards in the mail, and lives just up the road a ways in Jackson, Michigan, I had not yet had the pleasure of meeting. As always, it was a pleasure meeting another OBCer and spending a little time chatting. Ron Perry was the next to appear and it's always a pleasure talk to Ron and just watch and learn as he bird-dogs all the really good deals. Finally I spotted Mike Rich. Mike was still at the first table that he started at, he likes to leave no card unturned. Again there was a chat session and the usual OBC type greetings and exchange. Further details to follow on the thanks server. I had a great time with some great guys and will be looking forward to the next gathering of the FOOT. Mike Rich, Ron Perry, John Dahms and I made the trip from Southeastern Michigan to Central Ohio for a FOOT field trip. Plenty of conversation on the way down and we amused ourselves by taking the Sports Quiz in the July 1977 Sport magazine that I would eventu all y hand over to John McLaughlin. We pulled into the Holiday Inn in Strongsville a few minutes before Noonand we began the cardboard hunt in earnest. Shortly after arriving I ran into John McLaughlin who had been visiting his son in Cleveland , we spent some time catching up and I introduced him to John Dahms. I had also plannedto meet up with Ed Hutchinson and Jimi Thayer of VCT - just hanging out with fellow collectors is always my favorite part of these trips, it would beover an hour before I even bought a single card. Eventu all y I would start hitting tables and I was able to kill (2) sets (`75-76 Topps Hockey and `56 Topps Davy Crockett orange back) and get as close as I will get to the `59 Fleer Ted Williams set having picked up the JimThorpe card leaving just the =E2=9CTed Signs=E2=9D card which we allknow is on most everyone=E2=99s list. My other show finds included: (6) `33 Goudey=E2=99s, (5) `34 Batter-up=E2=99s, (3) `34 Goudey=E2=99s, a 39 Playb all , (2) `49 Bowman, a `50 C all ahan, a `53 Bowman, a `54 bowman variation, `56 Topps Checklist, `57 Topps Checklist & Contest card, a `59 Ted Williams (only Ted Signs left), a `60 Kahn=E2=99s, a `61 Nu-Card Scoops, some `63 Topps Peel Offs, a `64 Topps Stand-up, a `67 LaughlinWS card, a Fleer Baseb all Quiz card and a `76 Midwest Sports Collectors Convention A `55 Topps All American, (2) `60 Nu-Cards, a `61 Topps CFL, a `61 Topps, acouple `65 Topps T all Boys and a `70 Topps Super. (2) `61-62 Topps, `75-76 Topps set killer Danny Grant. A `10 T-58 Fish Series, (33) `18-`38 Arm & Hammer Birds, (13) `33 Sky Kings, (4) `53 Topps Wings, a `54 Topps World of Wheels, (5) `54 Topps Scoops, (14) `56 Topps Jets, (3) `56 Topps Davy Crockett (set killers), (6) `58 Topps Zorro, (5) `61 Topps Sports Cars, a `65 Topps Soupy Sales, (17) `66 Philly Green Berets and a stack of 20+ assorted =E2=9Codds & ends=E2=9D. So as you can see I was busy. We hit the road about 6 pm , pretty much closing out the show. Made a stop for a late dinner just north of the Ohio border and enjoyed each others company during a leisurely dinner. Dropped Ron &John off at their cars and made it to Mike=E2=99s house near 11 pm =E2=93 a great day spent by all . Of course, many will be stars, leader and World Series cards. If anyone has any to swap, please let me know as I now have about 140 dupes. These are mainly in typical Venezuelan condition, which should be very familiar to OBCers. Venezuelan cards were usually pasted into scrap albums, so many have paper loss on the back and/or creases, due to being pulled out of the albums. Many have no paper loss, but none aremint. Overall, they were less trashed than I remember, even if they wouldstill grade poor. I will also consider swapping these for other years of Venezuelans. Yes, other team cards have the bar extending all the way across the photo, but that's not the case on the Cubs team card. Who knows why. Perhapsthe layout artists didn't realize they should do it with the Cubs card (after all, it's the first team card in the set), or the name "Chicago Cubs" looked too tiny in a black bar that was that long - could be one of many reasons. My verdict? No new variations - just typical 1950's Topps sloppiness. That means that I now have over 500 1948-1955 Bowman cards available for trade! Below is the list of what I have along with approximate condition (for those with condition requirements). Most of these are commons (with some tougher high/low number cards), but there are some minor stars, semi-stars, and RCs in here too. I thought I might be able to drum up some trades for hits to my Topps, Exhibits, and Red Man wants, but anything from my sports or non-sports want lists is fair game. I also might be interested in something not of my lists, so if you see something you like/want/need, let me know. I'll trade off single cards, all cards from the same year, or the entire lot! Can anyone confirm this? I don't particularly care for the look of them in 9-pocket pages and currently have them in rigid top loaders laying in 300 count boxes. I know they make vault boxes for slabbed cards that these toploaders would fit in, but I don't have enough at the moment to warrant a box of that size.
