This was a big one that kind of takes me through the whole history of my collecting vintage cares. I thought I would share--but feel free to hit delete if this seems too self-indulgent. I started the set when I was 12 with a starter lot from one of my dad's cousins who lives in small town Ohio. I still have the wantlist, written in12-year old's handwriting and had the great pleasure of crossing off #581 today. That summer I got the Colavito at a card shop while visiting my grandparents in Belleville, IL. In New Jersey, my mom, dad, grandparents, and aunt all gave me cards from it for Christmas each year until I moved on from cards in high school. When I got back into collecting after college, this was the one I took on--slowly but surely making progress. I gotthe list down from 234 needed (according to my notes at the top) to around100 when I lived in New Haven, CT. I got the Tommy John on a pre-sniping eBay auction that ended on the first Thanksgiving morning my wife and I spent as a married couple while we lived in Cambridge, MA. The Brooks Robinson came via an eBay auction I won in the middle of the night when I was up with food poisoning when we lived in Indiana. The Alomar and Maury Wills came from my wife as a Christmas present given by my son on the very first Father's Day he ever celebrated. And now, after 26 years, Bill Denehy came in the mail to my house in California. So 26 years, 7 states, a wife, and two kids later the set is finally done. This was a big one that kind of takesme through the whole history of my collecting vintage cares. I thought I would share--but feel free to hit delete if this seems too self-indulgent. I started the set when I was 12 with a starter lot from one of my dad's cousins who lives in small town Ohio. I still have the wantlist, writtenin 12-year old's handwriting and had the great pleasure of crossing off #581 today. The Alomar and Maury Wills came from my wife as aChristmas present given by my son on the very first Father's Day he ever celebrated. And now, after 26 years, Bill Denehy came in the mail to my house in California. So 26 years, 7 states, a wife, and two kids later the set is finally done. I will miss going after this one (but I won't miss the hi #'s). Thanks for your patience! All - I haven't watch any MLB for a long, long time. Last night I saw the first half inning of the A's - Tigers game. The A's pitcher Colon (seriously - that's his name?) looked like, well, not like a pro athlete. The Tigers clean up hitter Fielder was even bigger. He got the bat around just fine, but I don't remember seeing players that large. While I was thinking that thought my wife said it out loud. They panned the dugouts and there were a number of guys that had the 'retired coaches physique' as it were. Last time I paid attention guys like Frank Thomas, Sosa, and Bonds were running around looking like sculpted weight lifters and we all wondered who was using artificial helpers. Our new SMARTBoards, document cameras, computers, and flat screen monitors are all wonderful tools. One tool that the district is not upgrading is our printers. My classroom still uses a hp deskjet printer that is now 17 years old. It does not print color anymore and is rapidly dying. It costs more to replace the ink twice a year now than to buy a new printer (our district will not use funds to upgrade printers). I would love to meet this goal by the beginning of 2014 in order to purchase a new all-in-one printer with a scanner and copier function. Once the two are separated grab two sheets of wax paper and two heavy books(dictionary type). Place the wax paper on each side of the card and flatten it between the books. Many times they run more "free listing" specials. If you use a "free" listing, it would only run you about $0.13 (ebay selling and paypal fees). Basically though, it's not very cost effective to do this and you will spend more time than the card is worth. you might want to consider selling themin a "lot" of similar cards. One thing you can try (and what I have done), is get a group of similar value cards and make 1 ad. Then in the ad list the cards you have, and have the ad selling price as "per card". I do this for cheap insert cards I have. I even have had pick 4-for-$1 ads in the past. I do that more though to help collectors rather than make money (which it doesn't). The drawback though is that the card "name/number" won't be in the title and people have to drill into the add and look though the list. Not as big ofa deal though if you are selling cards from the same set (individually), of the same player, or have some other "title" to your ad that will draw them in. Assuming that is accurate, both cataloged cards (Kneeling, Throwing) should be in a Braves uniform. Bruton was traded to Detroit on December 7, 1960. The trade was Bruton, Fox, Brown, and Cottier for Bolling and Chrisley. Therefore, the postcard of Bruton in a Detroit uniform must be 1961 or later. So it seems it is not part of the cataloged "set". If the SCD is correct about the postcards being purchased by the players to satisfy fan requests for photos/autographs, then these postcards are not a "set" in the usual sense but are cards linked together because they were purchased from a common vendor, probably under contract to the Braves. So I'm still guessing that Bill ordered some postcards from that vendor after his trade to Detroit. Doing a small bit of research, found a link on Net54 where the author states there is no difference. But there is one difference on the one Randy sent me from the one I had. His is miscut just a little where a yellow borderexists now with the bottom part of a diamond. This confirms this to be a 1969 since I've seen the whole sheets and the top border is yellow and his stamp is the upper left one right below the diamond. So now I believe I have both years. True? I'll say that any Yankee fits the bill - the most egregious (sp?) are Mantle and Maris. Sticking with 1964 and using a 15 year old Beckett (which still gives me pretty good relative pricing data), the Mantle #50 has an HBV of $325, which is more than double what any other card in that set is worth except Clemente (#440), and a Mantle/Maris combo card (#331). Was Mantle a great player? Of course he was. Was he 3 times as good a player as Maysor Aaron (both of whom are listed at $100). Heck no!! In fact I'd rate Mays as the greatest player of this generation; if anything his card should be worth more than Mantle. Than we have Maris who, face it, only had 2 great seasons and only two other very good seasons and yet his card #225 is listed at $60 which, in addition to cards mentioned above, is topped by only Rose (second year), Koufax, and Phil Niekro rookie (from the high number series). So that makes Maris the 10th most expensive card in that set, one in which most HOFers arepriced in a $20-40 range. How can you be mad when you've got a guy like that around?=E2=9D Frazier applauded the news of Kremer's card on Twitter, introducing the news with a link to Cincinnati Enquirer story and commenting, "My main man teddy getting some love." USA Today reports that the idea for Kremer's own baseball card came directly from Topps officials. Typically, only players, managers and coaches are allowed to be seen on cards wearing the team uniform, but in this special instance the Reds organization signed off on it. ================= To: glidden.matthew@gmail.com, theophylact2000@yahoo.com, Date: Mon, 28 Oct 2013 00:51:09 -0400 (EDT) From: Joshua Levine Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] Re: overpriced cards thread - Overpriced any card on my wantlist Underpriced any card not on my wantlist -----Original Message----- From: Matthew Glidden To: Watts Edward ; obc ramblings Sent: Sun, Oct 27, 2013 4:18 pm Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] Re: overpriced cards thread - example 1964 Topps Curt Flood #103 So many 60s-70s HOFers go for a song these days, hard to pick out just one.Brett & Carew both have popular RCs, but otherwise come cheaper than earlier top-tier hitters. The weird thing is that the SCD guide has the overpriced 1967 T hi's pricedat a premium (at least some of those like Mike Shannon and Mickey Stanley), but no one has updated the 1966's in years (Grant Jackson and the Cards rookies are both listed at $16 in NM). Do they even still update it or are these prices fossils from the 1990s? And I agree about both Mantle and Maris. It is interesting to me that a lot of second tier HOFers like Bunning, Santo are basically commons now. What do people think are the most UNDERpriced cards?
