Wednesday night my sons little league team And the team i coach won the regular season championship. They finished the season 10-3 should have been 12-1 but we wont get into that...LOL I want to share this story with you all On the first day of practice I saw some of these boys and asked myself "what did I get myself into" i hoped we would win 3 or 4 games. So me and my other coaches decided to do something about that...we emailed and called all the parents asking for 100% commitments and we got it, well from that day on we scheduled 2-3 practices a week...we had 9 practices under our belts before any other team even got in their first. The boys were mostly strangers, but became one with in 2 weeks pulling for each other picking each other up all the things you need to become a team. Now on our first game i think the boys were alittle nervous, and we were down 5-2 we battled back to tie the game and the game was called a tie after 6 then came our game of games we broke out for 9 runs in the first inning, and ended the game in the 4th inning with a 19-2 win then we won 2 more in a row...then we had our first game where we lost, and I told the team I put that loss on myself...we were down 3-1 and my pitcher pitched his limit, andi wanted to save our other 2 pitchers for our next game well the kids i brought in gave up 8 runs that inning, BUT we came back and scored 9 runs inthe next inning, and the other coach came out and said its time to call the game as we have hit our time limit....Oh my god was I mad, but mad at myself for not going with my gut......I thought that loss could put us in a tail spin and i saw us losing up to 4 game sin a row....well the boys bouncedback and the next game we faced the then first place team and put 7 runs on the board in the first and we cruised to an 11-2 win we won the next 2...then the boys thought they were great, and faced the 2nd to last place teamand they thought they could just show up and we win, well that team mercy' d us 12-0, then we lost to the first team to beat us.....now we r down 2 ina row.....then we play the team we beat 19-2 and we win but score only 3 runs...our 3 game total for runs was 4 ...not going to do it....we called a hitting practice and had a 4 hour practice where we went back to basics....i think it worked as the next game we scored 10 runs in the first, and the game was called in the 3rd 12-0...now we play our last game its set up the 2 best pitchers in the league facing each other...I told my boys attack himearly in the first because we wont get many more chances...well my boys did that and scored 3 in the first and we won that game 3-0...well the seasonlook over we were in 2nd place but there were a few teams that had to makeup rained out games...we needed alot of help to get into a position of being in first....well we got all the help and the league said we might have to continue the tie games....funny we had a tie, and the first place team and second place had a tie, and the team we tied if they won out had a chancefor first....well all the stars aligned and the VERY last day (this monday) the first place tame played the 4th place team but only 12 games separating them and if the 4th place team won then we would have to finish that tiewe had with them...guess what bot teams went for it all and pitched their TOP pitchers to their max the 4th place team won and now not only did we have a chance for first, but we were in the drivers seat. Tuesday the game is set we start in the 7th inning we r home so its extra innings rules...by the way my ace was on the mound when the tie was called and he only threw 9 pitches so he was good to go.....He starts off walking the first 2 batters...the 9 and 10 batters...oh god then he strikes out thenext 2 and this kid Connor gets up who owns Eric (my ace) he looks at me Ihave NEVER done this in a 9 and 10 year old league, but i tell him to walkhim and load the bases...he walks him and throws one pitch to the next batter ....ground ball to the second baseman flip to first...OUT..inning over....we get up the pitcher walks my first 2 batters.....(sound familiar?) butthen my next batter takes a babe ruth swing, BOOM fly ball way over the left fielders head runner from second scores and the boys charge the field and CELEBRATE first place. The other team that tied who was in first place LOST which bumped them to 3rd place. I am so PROUD of these boys...they played so hard for us and they DESERVED the championship. These boys improved and developed so much and that is so important Now each boy had moments and shined. I could go on and on about the breakthrough season my son TONY had, These boys improved and developed so much andthat is so important ..... but this is about 12 boys who became a team over the course of a season and became Men Tuesday night I also want to add before we played our first game we were invited to an Army game by the Coach of Army Baseball he invited us into the locker room totalk to our boys b-4 the game and he had a great speech and gave the boys some real good advise.... he said....."sometime you hear its not if you win or loose its how you playthe game, BUT remember this .... winning is VERY IMPORTANT!" Sorry its so long THANK YOU ALL ROB FIREMAN GIOIA ================= Date: Sat, 2 Jun 2012 04:25:48 +0000 (UTC) To: , OBC , From: Subject: WSSCA Seattle (shoreline) Card show Rick and all other WA area OBCers, I have decided to drive up on Saturday afternoon, stay over and see if I can meet up with Rick on Sunday morning...Maybe Dave Fallen might appear? Hey boys... Yep time for the excursion where men act like boys and collect cardboard pictures. Yes, it's time for the National. I have seen some of the emails floating around about accommodations. I'm waiting to hear from Kent about what he wants to do. Some things about the last trip there... the parking is a pain in the ass. I stayed at the harbor and it cost about 25 bucks a night to park around the block at the hotel. Found out quickly that you don't really need a car there because there is a free bus that circles the entire area. So my preference is to find a hotel that doesn't charge to park. I have the Pilot so I can fit a bunch of us if needed to get to the show and back. I remember there was one lot about a block away from the center which was like 10-15 bucks. If there is a hotel that runs close to the circular (or whatever those buses were called) and has free parking, that would be perfect. As usual, I'll put together the 'roster'. Every year we add a few who have never been to a National before. As I have said before, you may meet someone "physically' for the first time, but I can tell you, once we all get together, we have known each other for years! The usual tradition of the Friday nite baseball game is going to be a little off as the O's aren't in town all week. Sheesh! If you didn't take the tour of Orioles park last time around, I highly suggest it. Very cool! The Nats are in town that week if anyone wants to make the trek south. It's about an hour drive (yeah we thought 29 miles from Anaheim to Dodger stadium wasn't going to take 1.5 hours!). I definitely want to hit little italy this year also. One thing me and Kent found out, we spent WAY too much money on food (and our fat asses attest to I'm attaching the last Baltimore roster so you newbies can see what info I need to fill in. Start sending me your info and I'll be constantly updating. Keep in mind, the cell phone is the greatest technology OBC has seen. If you are looking for something, all hands on deck and the cell phones will buzz with what you need or a great deal at a table! Ken, you bringing the wizard hat this year or do you have something else planned so we can find you? Back in 2009, I came across some cards at my parents' house. Some Topps Supers, a few 70's cards, hostess cards, and some non-sport cards. With some of the non-sport I found like Star Wars, Elvis, and KISS, I know why I have them in the collection (reasons to follow). With others, I can remember getting one of those Topps fun packs, and the cards were part of that fun pack (Mork and Mindy, Incredible Hulk, Welcome Back Kotter). The "adding to the collection" bug has been nagging me for quite some time. Up until now, I have only collected train cards. My dad spent his whole working career working for train companies (Rock Island, Chicago & Northwestern, and Metra), so I have had a blast collecting these cards, and taking a look at some of them with my dad. I kept telling myself that I shouldn't add more non-sport and I'm not really sure why. Well, finally, I have caught that bug anddecided to add to the non-sport collection. Each of the additions has a family tie in. Here we go: Star Wars: Back in 1977 as a five year old, I can remember going to the movie theater for the very first time. My dad took my older brother, sister, and myself to see Star Wars. Although I don't remember much about that day, I do remember wanting to sit in between my brother and my dad because Darth Vader SCARED me big time! I became a fan. Collectible figures and toys became part of my boyhood collection. To this day, I still enjoy the original trilogy, and am entertained with the new stuff as well. So, when Jeff Whitworth offered up some Star Wars a few weeks ago, I thought it was time to take the plunge. I let Jeff know that if he had any he couldn't get rid of, I would take them off his hands. Jeff sent me a very generous starter set, with Star Wars. Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi. Witha few of my own Star Wars and Empire cards and some recent waiver offerings from Father Pat, I am ready to go with a Star Wars wantlist. Elvis: I give credit to this set to my mom, who still absolutely adores The King. I can picture her and I at the dime store when I was little: "Oh look T.J., they have Elvis cards. Wouldn't you rather have those than baseball cards?" Well, at some point, I know she bought me a few packs. From those, a few singles survived. And, with some help again from Father Pat, I have an Elvis wantlist ready to go too. KISS: This is the last addition, at least for today. And this one I blameon my older brother. The same one who got me started collecting baseball cards. I did that simply because I would have done anything my older brother was doing. He was buying baseball cards, I wanted to buy baseball cards. He was riding a bike, I wanted to ride a bike. You know how it goes. Anyway, my love for music comes from my brother, specifically the hard rock and heavy metal. I can still remember sneaking into his room to listen to a KISS 8-track. So, I am guessing I got a few packs of KISS because my brother liked the band. So, in honor of my brother, I am going to roll out a KISS wantlist too. And that's it for now. I promise you, I don't have any Brett Butler cards or stuff that you don't have.
If I could manage it, I'd just send Brett Butler to your house to top off your collection and hang out in your hobby room but that might be a bit over the top.
Anyway, nice collection!

To my knowledge that wasn't the case, although I have been talking with Chris Olds (editor of Buckett Baseball, Buckett Basketball and Buckett Sports Card Monthly). Our last contact was in mid April - he had asked if my information was still current, and if not get it updated ASAP and send pictures as well. I complied, but it turned out that I still missed the deadline. So with the recent questions from the PSA guys, I fired off an email to Chris and he told me that my Butler collection had been featured on page 33 of the June 2012 Sports Card Monthly. I dashed down to Barnes & Noble and picked up a copy (for $10???? the HORROR). > My hope is that the little bit of free advertising will bring some items and/or cards out of the woodwork that would make a small dent in my very small wantlist. On Saturday mornings between 8 & 10, we do live remote broadcasts from local car dealers - essentially live, 2-minute commercials. I end up producing & directing most of these, since the 2 biggest buyers are clients whose commercials I do. Well, this morning about 9:15, while the crew & I were killing some time between live cut-ins, a gentleman approached the live truck. Turns out he is a cousin of mine, one with whom I've shared a lot of genealogy info. He then hands me what at first appeared to be an index card & said he wanted me to have it. It was actually a post-card, & I couldn't quite make out the signature.. So cousin Max tells me this story: he used to collect cards (destroyed in a fire a long time ago, unfortunately), but one of the sets he collected had a card of this former ballplayer (which I quickly figured out must have been either a '60 or a '61 Fleer). Max, being young & innocent, mailed the card to the old-timer - and got this postcard in return. The ball player took time to write a personal post-card, in June 1960, to Max, thanking him. And it was signed... Waite C. Hoyt. Yes, my cousin gave me a post-card signed by a HOFer, a member of the legendary '27 Yankees. What a great gift! On top of that a couple of eBay winnings showed up today, including anotherYankee hurler, a '64 Whitey Ford, & a tough '57 checklist 3/4. A good day for my collection today! ================= Date: Sun, 17 Jun 2012 19:18:46 -0500 (GMT-05:00) To: "obc-ramblings@yahoogroups.com" From: Mark Z Subject: What is better than back to back jacks?? Friday night my son, his girlfriend and I saw a double header of local cardinal affiliate Memphis Redbirds (AAA). Good night of baseball...starts with getting a team set at the door. It is always good to update the minor league collection. Top prospect always on top, and Rocky (mascot) always on the bottom. First game redbirds lost 5-2, could not overcome first inning 3 run outburst before we got to the park. Good barbeque nachos between games, lots of jalapenos on top. Second game much better. Redbirds ahead most of the game..nice but not comfortable lead 6-3 going into the 5th inning (only 7 innings in double headers). Then...back to back jacks! Career minor leaguers Eugenio Valez and Mark Hamilton connect..Valez on 3 run hr, then on very next pitch Hamilton goes solo onto the bluff starting the scramble of fans from their blankets chasing the ball.. Always good to share a game with my son, especially near father's day. Seems so strange to have a 7th inning stretch in the 5th inning.. What could be better than back to back jacks? How about back to back to back? When I got home later, I saw the envelope from Ed Schott. I was very much looking forward to the 65 Bob Uecker he sent (kills 65 team set for me!). He said he sent a few more cardinals to me to 'maximize postage'. I was expecting a common or two from 60 or 61 which I would have been happy with. As I made my way into the envelope I see Uecker..making jokes of course..posing as left handed batter when he bats right..futher in, I see some 63's..Shantz and Sadecki- aren't these high numbers I thought..turned over and yep, great hits..but not finished yet...hiding among the others was something I surely did not expect. 1960 (2nd yr) Bob Gibson!!! Definitely a home run package here..a huge "Schott" into deep center putting a hurt on my list! Thanks for such a great package Ed...I owe you big. Sorry for the thanks intertwined with the ballpark ramble, but they fit real well for me on a good baseball day. mark z ================= Date: Mon, 18 Jun 2012 01:33:56 -0000 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: "mikesportsfan" Subject: Chicago show June 30 There is a Sun Times show in Chicago the weekend of June 29 - July 1. So...been off of school for a couple of weeks...finally got around to checking ebay to see if there were any Phillie things I might be able to get cheap. Ebay for me has become a vast wasteland of overpriced buy-it-now dealerstock. Very rarely do i find a bargain anymore...but i check anyway... About a week ago, i did a search for Phillies which landed me this lot: http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item270995763017&ssPageNameADME:B:EOIBSA:US:3160 I saw that the postcards are from a team issue from the mid-70s that I do not have an example of....plus, I could get a '75 Carlton and a '70 Bunning and a bunch of other Phillies cards to play with...I figured I would put ina decent snipe to cover the postcards and the cost of the other cards...but wait a minute. Included in one of the scans was a '66 Fergie RC. Looks tobe in vg shape too! Darn...well...increase my snipe a bit to...$44 (figured I would be willing to spend $50 incl. shipping on this lot).... As you can see, I got the lot for just $6!! I was so happy since those teamissue cards go for about $5 apiece usually! After s/h which was $5.25, I spent a total of $11.24!! Got the package today and was floored. Not only were there the postcards, which were great, but the Jenkins is indeed in vg+ condition, and the secondJenkins RC was in poor-fair condition! Yep...two!! I also got a '67 High number. 2 '70 High numbers. the '70 bunning, the '75 Carlton, a '76 Carlton,a bunch of '65s including two Richie Allens, and the rest! condition varied from fair to exmt on most (the '71s were the best with several being nrmt!). Also got one of my favorite '66s Power Plus! So...my one ebay score in a long time...but wait...I just had a best offer accepted on a Sports America Champions Sheet of Herb Pennock! for half of what I saw one sell for the other day!! Hmm...might have to get back to ebay tonight and start my search again! The current edition is apparently #11. I have used my #9 a lot, but I'm wondering if the latest edition is easier to use. In particular, is the font larger? My poor old eyes are struggling with the fine print in the #9 version. Also, when I upgraded to #9 I found a few vintage additions from the previous version, it was more than just adding the latest UV. I'm still hopefully searching for cards of Washington-born players not listed in #9. I have found a couple, but would like to know if maybe one or two others have been "discovered" in the new version. Too bad they don't release it in electronic form, like SCD for the Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards. ================= To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com, david.fallen@comcast.net Date: Wed, 27 Jun 2012 07:05:45 -0400 (EDT) From: Tom Housley Subject: Re: Baseball Card Alphabetical Checklist This isn't really a baseball card checklist - and perhaps you're already aware of this - but if you go to baseball-reference.com, you can get a listing for anyone who was born in Washington (or anywhere else) easily. Just enter the name of someone you know who was born in Washington; in that player's biographical info, the state he's born in will have a hyperlink. Just click on it and bingo - a list of every player born in that state. It also works for guys who went to college - just click on the hyperlink on the name of a college. It won't give you a list of their cards, but it'll get you started :-) ================= Date: Wed, 27 Jun 2012 11:09:14 -0700 (PDT) To: "OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com" From: Edward Watts Subject: Moving to SoCal Hi Everyone, This is just a bit of a short ramble to share some news. After ten yearsteaching Roman History at Indiana University, I have accepted a job to move to the University of California, San Diego and become the first Alkiviadis Vassiliadis Endowed Chair in the History department there. It is quitea change but, I think, a good one. We are packing up and planning to head out to Carlsbad CA, the home of Legoland, in the next couple of weeks. My wife, who grew up in Southern California, is thrilled. The kids, who are Hoosiers by birth, are a little less thrilled. We have tried to sell my son on the idea of baseball and track all year round (he has not yet bought, though the idea of regular Padres games and Tony Gwynn's baseballcamp this summer is helping). My daughter loves the idea of never needing her winter coat but is afraid of missing her best friend. As for me, I am excited about the job but I am going to miss all of the OBC Hoosiers (especially fellow Bloomingtonian Hitz). I am looking forward to meeting the California crowd sometime, hopefully soon. I will update my address once all things are settled (we are in escrow now but I am really superstitious about real estate and don't believe that anything is really sold or bought until the money changes hands). Until then, be well. They are about 6 - 7 hours apart. I thought I would see if we could meet up before Ed leaves the midwest. Would anyone be up for a visit to the College Football Hall of Fame in South Bend, IN @ Notre Dame for a day, one of the next few weekends? Notre Dame is around 3 1/2 - 4 hours for both groups. Admission to the HOF is $14 and they are open both Saturdays and Sundays. You have the deadline, so you will need to let us know if you would be available, and if so, what day. The Foot group still has to hear from joe Denning, so we can meet up with him, before he leaves Michigan for Virginia. After ten years teaching Roman History at Indiana University, I have accepted a job to move to the University of California, San Diego and become the first Alkiviadis Vassiliadis Endowed Chair in the History department there. It is quite a change but, I think, a good one. We are packing up and planning to head outto Carlsbad CA, the home of Legoland, in the next couple of weeks. My wife, who grew up in Southern California, is thrilled. The kids, who are Hoosiers by birth, are a little less thrilled. We have tried to sell my son onthe idea of baseball and track all year round (he has not yet bought, though the idea of regular Padres games and Tony Gwynn's baseball camp this summer is helping). My daughter loves the idea of never needing her winter coat but is afraid of missing her best friend. As for me, I am excited aboutthe job but I am going to miss all of the OBC Hoosiers (especially fellow Bloomingtonian Hitz). I am looking forward to meeting the California crowdsometime, hopefully soon. I will update my address once all things are settled (we are in escrow now but I am really superstitious about real estate and don't believe that anything is really sold or bought until the money changes hands). Until then, be well. About 5 years ago I started a tradition with my two sons (now 12 & 14) to visit at least one new ballpark every summer. The first year was awesome with old Yankee stadium and Fenway, that ended with a trip to Cooperstown and a private tour of the HoF from a childhood friend who is a curator. The last 3 summers were one-offs within driving distance of Philly area (NY, DC, Balt.). This year the plan was a trip to Chicago which would include a one hour drive to Milwaukee too. But alas, the best laid plans. turns out the week I planned is my sons freshman football try-outs and he can't miss it. I was able to get my FF miles refunded and have now planned the following We start in Rochester NY visiting good friends and high school graduation party the weekend of 8/4. On Monday 8/6 we drive 4 hours to Pittsburgh and see the Pirates take on Arizona. Tues AM we drive to Cleveland (2 hrs) to watch the tribe vs Twins. And since we are a mere 3 hours from Detroit at that point, why not see the Tigers vs Yankees on Wed 8/8. Of course we'll have to split up the long drive back to Philly with a stop in Canton to switch sports and visit the other HoF. (Unfortunately not aware I know any curators there.). The really, really bad news is that my plans to spend the weekend in Baltimore with the long list of OBCers attending the National show must now be changed. I will send in my update, but will at least drive down to Baltimore for Wed & Thurs. I'm not too worried about tickets in Pittsburgh or Cleveland, and might just wait until I get to the stadiums to find some (or check out Stubhub now..) but the Tigers/ Yankees game could be more difficult. Any FOOT fellas have any thoughts/recommendations on that? Stubhub right now might be wise. Looking for 3 tickets Wed 8/8. We usually walk around and check out many different views/seats, so not too worried about where they are. Between still recovering from a cold and being buried at work, I backed out. Sorry, again Mike. This morning, John Dahms, e-mailed that he planned on going to the Gibraltar show today. I called Mike and Mark Talbot, but it was not enough notice for them. I shot over there and met up with John and we went to a few tables together including Mark Smith and Danny Phllips, both of whom will be setting up at the National. I was able to pick up a 1978 Yankees yearbook with the 27 card SSPC pullout in tact. The dealer had a number of yearbooks from 1969 -1985 for $3 each, but I did not get any others, as I am trying to cut down on the publications I pick up. Picked up a few cards to start 3 new sets: 13 of 24 Bob Parker More BB Cartoons; 1968 Bazooka (got my HOMer Willie Horton, along with Bill Freehan); and finally 4 of the 18 1930 W554 photos. Finally I have some sets to look for at the National! It was great meeting up with John again and a surprisngly successful show.
