The start of this thread is something that comes up in OBC every few years, the 1966 T #591 Jackson/Shirley rookie card. In addition to being a shortprint of a high demand set, it is a rookie card of players from 2 high demand teams, the Dodgers and Phillies. For team collectors, there are only ahandful of teams that are collected as feverishly as the Dodgers and Phillies. So combine, shortprint, set, team and rookie card collectors, and presto you have the ingredients for a very tough high demand card. Try storing the cards in a warm place, like on top of a radiator while they 'uncurl' and/or try warming up and softening the plastic a bit with a hair dryer before putting them into the hard storage or pages. Maybe that will keep the plastic from cracking? Otherwise, try collecting the set with cracks. Those Clemente's aren't totally overpriced that way ;-) Ken M In a message dated 11/4/2012 10:55:45 P.M. As that balance is getting low, the OBCAC made the decision to ask members for $10 dues to restock the treasury. During the year (Jan/Feb) the OBC paypal account received and then dispersed $522.61 for the Ryan Distelrath charity auction. Our current balance is $514.40 with the increase being the receipt of OBC dues from many members. Note that the increase is not an even product of $10 as some payments had paypal fees deducted. The last time OBC dues were collected was late 2002. So someone who has been a member since 2002 would have paid roughly $1 a year in dues. I think that's a pretty good deal. I can't say when we will next ask for dues, but it will likely be many years from now. As far as a full accounting. I usually give a full accounting to the OBC AC every quarter or so. More frequent if there is any activity of note, such as a charity auction. Perhaps that accounting should be sent out to the whole group. I'll let the OBCAC decide on that. If you have any concerns with the state of the OBC treasury I ask that you contact the OBCAC directly. Hope I've answered your questions. This is a first for me and I guess it's OK, but I have to wonder why there was enough money in the treasury for all those years and now there's not. If we are now required to pay the treasury I think we all should be entitled to know how much money we had at the beginning of the term and have a full accounting of where it went. The OBC holiday card exchange. For those of you who are new, or have bad memories, the holiday exchange is when participants are randomly assigned the name of another participant to buy and mail a gift to the person they have been assigned to. On December 25th - Christmas for some, just after Hanukkah, the winter solstice or Yule for pagans (not sure if we have any pagans) or just a fun day to get agift. Rules (the fine print) 1. Gifts should be in the $5-10 range. The best gifts are not usually the most expensive. Try to get creative. 2. Envelopes should be clearly marked "do not open to Dec 25" or "Do not open till Xmas". 3. Open your present on the morning of the 25th 4. Report your present and who gave it to you on the ramblings server ASAP. How it works. 1. I think going to a dealer you will probably take a 50% (or more) compared to selling cards your self, as the dealer needs to make a profit and account for the time he will take sorting through/listing/selling your cards. If you want to go this route I would recommend the dealers on our web page. Best I know they are all good guys. I would give a special thumbs up to Kevin Savage, Kurt Turdot, and Mark Macrae, although I've never sold anything to them. Ebay will probably get you the best price, you could sell in lots or even complete sets. You would definitely need an ebay account with a decent amount of feedback though. The other option is to sell on one of the online boards, for example Net54 http://www.net54baseball.com/ has a B/S/T and even auction section. We met up at a commuter lot in Smith's Creek just a few miles south of the Blue Water Bridge around 9:30 am and we were on our way. Arriving at the Convention Center at about 12:45 we had a few minutes before the doors would open, the drive was effortless as the conversation never stopped during the 3 hour+ drive in. There was a bit of a line but we got into the show about 20 minutes after 1 and proceeded to theright as per our advise from Toronto veteran Mike Rich. We made our way down a few isles just checking out the wares and I made a move on a binder of `50's & `60's Hockey - the dealer known as the "King of Cards" made an initial offer and told me he would count the cards and let me know. Ron and I walked up and down another isle and stopped to pick up some OPC Baseball (I completed the `80 OPC set here with the Nolan Ryan for $5) and by the time we got back "the King" was selling my lot to another collector. I was a bit disappointed but at least I knew that there were going to be some dealers who would make whole lot deals at a discount. So when I found a binder of 120+ 60's Parkhurst that I was able to get at less than acouple bucks a card I was all over that making a huge contribution to my hockey collection and the first big purchase. We were set to meet Gord Ellis at 3 pm so we stopped by a dealer who told us he was looking for some OPC baseball for us and we picked up a near set of `75's w/dupes and a 2000 count box of `79's for $40 - about 4000 cards for cheap and it was off to meet Gord. While Gord was going through a stack from Mike Rich I was able to look through the `75 OPC's and completed another set and then passed on the rest of the near set to Ron to get him a huge starter set. Gord then took a look at a stack I had brought for him and I did the same with a group he brought for me and we spent well over an hour enjoying each others company and eating pizza. In the meantime, Ron went back to the OPC Baseball guy and bought group lots of `76 and `78 OPC and a complete `77 set for cheap money again. To say the least when we split from our meet & greet with Gord we had to hightail it to the car to drop off tonsof When we returned from the parking lot we proceeded to the left and picked up more deals and steals as we kept up the pace until 8 pm when we made it to the car for the trip home. When the dust had cleared I had: =E2=A2 completed 3 sets (`75 & `80 OPC Baseball and `69 Topps Football stamp albums) =E2=A2 added over 100 cards to `60's Parkhurst Hockey =E2=A2 added 20+ mid `60's Topps Hockey =E2=A2 found over 100 late `60's & early `70 OPC Hockey =E2=A2 picked up 25 additional OPC Baseball cards from my list with a nice group of `72's including Aaron, Clemente, Yaz, Bench & Munson =E2=A2 took home nearly 3000 dupes for `75 & 79 OPC Baseball =E2=A2 found a stack of 200+ OPC hockey dupes =E2=A2 and located some assorted Topps baseball and football "oddballs" that I picked up along the way. All in all - a very successful show focused on Canadian issues. The ride home was just as enjoyable as Ron and I talked about our good fortune at the show and just about every other topic imaginable. I really enjoyed spending the day with Ron, we hung out the entire day, I can't remember ever going to a show with Ron and not splitting up somewhere along the way,but not this time. Great day, great company, great time, met another trader - I will be doing that again sometime. BE WELL!!!! I believe that this is the case because Frank does not have an email account, he does not have an on-line want list unless you count the one on my list or the one that T.J. Valechek posts from time to time. Frank corresponds purely via the USPS, he sends out his list that way, he sends cards and letters that way. The show (which was by far the biggest by at least 10x) that I had ever attended was simply awesome. Ron was kind enough to let me tag along with him for the majority of the day, introduce me to a wide majority of the dealers, and most important to me, he allowed me to show him some of the cards I had set aside and gave me his oppinion on whether the deal was a good one, we were also able to combine our cards on a couple of tables to get a better discount. a huge thanks goes out to ron for all of his help. (also, a huge thanks for the 59 topps maris card he handed me toward the end ofthe I went into the show with about 5 things I wanted to make a priority, mynolan ryan rc was number 1, finishing off my 69 and 70 topps fb was number2, pick up a couple of nice size lots of 50's baseball was 3, hi numbers for my 60's set was 4, and a couple of cards for rocky's WOW cards was 5. found out early that the first 2 were not going to be accomplished. the dealers were not budging on the prices for the ryan cards that they had,and fb was definately not in the majority on most of the tables. however, I was able to obtain nice size 54 and 55 topps baseball starter lots, over 60 hi number cards for my 59-67 topps sets, a couple of cards for the rocks WOW set, and picked up a couple of other cool non sportscards I thought he might like, so who knows, maybe another set for the Rock. as we were talking to dealer Wayne from indianappolis right before we were heading out the door, Wayne mentions a box of 72 topps he had earlier that ron mentioned to me. at the time i passed as I was still hoping for more 50's baseball, but that fell thru as the guy we were heading too hasleft early to take his wife out to dinner......what the heck!!!!!!! lol so i picked up a 600 ct. lot with a ton of hi numbers....so on the advice of Ron I am in the process of upgrading my complete set and then willassess the lot and see how many i am shy for another shot at this set....hey, for 40 bucks....well worth it! overall it was a bit overwhelming when i walked in but thanks to ron and Mike I was able to adjust, met a ton of great guys in the dealers, was able to check off another OBC'er on my able to meet list. The ride home was just as enjoyable as the ride down, after we got turned in the right direction it was flawless. in closing, I would again like to thank Mike and Ron, for the freindship, and the help the whole time we were there, looking forward to the nextshow thanks all and thanks OBC John Dahms 3260 Kingsbrook Dr. #601 Jackson, MI I collect vintage baseball and football cards. please check out my site. http://jd3681vintage.webs.com/ ================= Date: Mon, 19 Nov 2012 00:21:45 -0000 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: "mikesportsfan" Subject: Chicago Sun Times show report Ron Perry, John Dahms and I made it to the show yesterday. The only Chicago area attednee on Saturday was TJ, but the show itself was excellent. I was not able to make it all the way through the show, even though we were there from the opening at 9:30 through the closing at 5:00 cst. I got the 1963 Bazooka ATG Cy Young to finish that set and then my last buy was from JD Heckathorn including the 1963 Salada BB Coin of I also bought a complete set of 1937 BAT Hints on Association Football, which is a Japanese set of soccer cards. 1 set is back down to 1 to go. 1949 Leaf FB, which I thought I had finished at the National ,but ended up missing 2, now down to 1, again. 2 sets are down to 5 and under. 1954 Johnston Cookies - went from 12 to 3 and 1926 W-512 BB strip cards is now down to 2. 3 type cards, including 1946 Sunbeam Bread Sacramento Solons and a 1949 Sommer & Kaufmann San Francisco Seals #24 Roy Nicely. Interesting my 2008 SCDlists #24 as "unknown". Only card in the set listed as unknown. 3rd typecard is around 1887 Old Judge Champions on a runner named Myers. Anyone know anything about this set? 4. Sets are now at least 1/2 way: 1969 Jack in the Box California Angels, 1967 Topps FB Comic Pennants, 1934 Player's Cricketers and 1958 HIres. Biggest individual card pick-up was the 1940 Playball Ted Williams. Among others, this gets me to around 30 to go for that set. Also knocked off some 1939 Playball and am down to the unlucky 13 high numbers. Great show and company. Next bog show, will likely be Chicago in March. So if you are interested, don't care about condition, or have a want list for me to look at, letme I'll probably take a few days before making any decisions in order to give anyone interested a chance to respond. http://www.sportscardfun.com/trader/taylor_schock.asp ================= Date: Mon, 19 Nov 2012 16:02:04 -0800 (PST) To: "OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com" From: Ron Perry Subject: Toronto Show Chicago Show Hi OBC, I had a great time with Mark, Mike and John at the recent Toronto and Chicago shows. Collectively they did an excellent job summarizing both shows in yesterday's ramblings. Here's my summary of each show. One word describes the Toronto show and that word is Bulk with a capital B. Here's a summary of what I purchased. Large starter lots/near sets including stars for three mid-60's Topps hockey sets.About 75 50's and early 60's Parkhurst and Topps hockey cards which allowed me to post want or have lists to these sets. Over 150 60's and early 70's OPC Baseball with a couple dozen hits to the sets. A near set of 75 OPC baseball, an even nearer set of 77 OPC baseball and several thousand 1977 and 1978 OPC baseball dupes. The Chicago show brought no large bulk lots, but numerous hits to key sets. Highlights include about a dozen pre-war baseball including 35 Goudey HOF'ers Averill and Appling. Numerous 1950 and 51 Bowman Baseball includingHOF'ers Appling, Schoendienst, Rizzuto, and about 10 high numbers. Three nice hits to the 47-66 Exhibit set including Koufax, Maris and Aparicio batting, leaving 32 to go with a couple commons.Several 1971 Milk Duds getting that set closer to a want than a have list. Eleven Parkhurst and Topps hockey and a starter lot of 1968 Atlantic Oil baseball from Kurt Tourdot. About a dozen 1961 Post Cereal baseball send away/company versions including Mantle and Maris. Fourteen hits to 1963 Posts and Jello baseball including stars and short prints. This leaves the Post set at 21 cards and probably many years to completion as all but one is a a short print. To summarize, two great days with great friends at two great shows. ================= Date: Tue, 20 Nov 2012 03:54:55 -0000 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: "tjv815" Subject: Sun Times Show report I was lucky enough to be able to attend the Sun-Times show on Saturday. Even luckier to meet up with some FOOT members - Ron Perry, Mike Rich, and for the first time, John Dahms. Overall, I thought it was a typical Sun-Times show. That translates to - I did well. I picked up a number of OPC hitsranging from 1966-1976 from Kurt Tourdot. ALso knocked off some from my 56 football as well as a few 72 high numbers. Over at Uncle Dicks table, I knocked off some Bowmans from my 1949 and 1950 sets. I also picked up a few more 56 football, a few more 72 high numbers, and a trio of 1960 footballbringing that set down to three needed. Found some Globetrotter cards for50 cents a piece at Uncle Dick's table as well. I also found a few non sport, and manged to do some Secret Santa shopping at Uncle Dicks. Ron Estes provided a few 33 Goudeys and a 69 opc Bench. I also picked up a t206 White Sox L. Tannehill, and my first M101-2 Sporting News supplement. The most obvious reason is a 1980's discovery of a quantity of unopened boxes in a Philadelphia warehouse. Scarcity is probably also related to differences in marketing/packaging. Cards were originally packaged with caramel which went rancid. Then they were packaged without the candy. Various configuration of packages existed. If you look on eBay you can almost always find unopened pack of Red Back for sale. They are always the "doubles" version - the type found in the Philadelphia warehouse. Put him up there with Babe Ruth, Jackie Robinson, BranchRickey and Kenesaw Mountain Landis. ================= To: "OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com" Date: Tue, 27 Nov 2012 10:08:38 -0600 From: Tim newcomb Subject: RE: [OBC-Ramblings] RIP Marvin Miller Miller's goal and greatest achievement was to end the indentured servitude of players that was the reserve clause. I have begged the hof to induct him and am sad he passed before that happened. I met mr. Miller once and he was very pleasant but i had the impression of underlying toughness and extreme intelligence. I have always compared that meeting to when i met bill clinton. If a guy who changed the face of players salaries should get in who to say a guy like Scott Boras shouldnt be in? I mean he negotiated the first 25 million dollar a yearcontract. Should we let a guy like Donald Fher in? I just honestly feel the Hall of Fame should be reserved for players and managers. Owners get in why? because they have billions of dollars and can throw that money around?....just my opinion -----Original Message----- From: Fr.
