It was a fun night at the ballpark. The Dragons won, the lightning in the west didn't make it our way, and the beer was free. The only almost-negativewas that a foul ball by one of the bad guys - the Lansing Lugnuts - ricocheted (did I spell that right??) and missed hitting my wife in the face by about an inch. However, the rare event I got to winess was Dragons' 20 year old shortstop Billy Hamilton stealing his 100th base of the season (along with numbers 98& 99). According to the intrepid Dayton Daily News, Billy is only the 12thminor leaguer in recorded history to make it to the century mark. BaseballReference shows 21 major leaguers have also managed it (including another fella named Billy Hamilton). So in all of baseball history, there have been33 games in which a guy has swiped #100, and I can now say I was at one ofthem:-) ================= To: Date: Sun, 4 Sep 2011 10:35:31 -0500 From: Subject: Some sad news Hello All: After her long battle from a stroke years ago, my mother passed away peacefully in her sleep Saturday. In 1956, #s 1-180 have either white or gray backs. My Standard Catalog says, many collectors feel that grays are scarcer in 1 - 100, and whites in 101 - 180. In 1959, 199-286 have either back, and the gray is the less common. I've attached a spreadsheet to give you the idea. I picked the Bucs and Eagles in Week 1, so I can't use them again regardless of if they win or lose. Since I'm starting this late, nobody can pick the Packers or Saints in Week1 since they are playing tonight. Entry fee will be a card worth $10-$15 from before 1982. I'm curious as to whether my experience is typical for those collecting all the sports. I started with my childhood collection of baseball from the 1950s and before plus a little 50s football. I completed baseball sets after the 1950s finding the 70s the easiest to finish. In general baseball sets get easier the newer they are. I then moved to football, completed the 1970s and have been hung up on early 1960s and early 1950s. I went to basketball and just today got down to 5 cards to complete sets from 1969 to 1980. I recently moved to hockey and have made modest progress even completing the 1970s. Topps 1951 Ringside boxing is not too hard to find although I haven't completed the set. I know that baseball cards were printed in much greater quantity than the others. My experience over the past 30 years leads me to believe that: early 1950s and early 1960s football cards are quite scarce in relation to baseball, basketball is easy - thank goodness not much was issued before 1969, and hockey is tough to find - but not terribly popular once you find them. For me, almost from the beginning, I collected all 4 major sports. I actually went after the FB very early on. The smaller sets, compared to BB, allowed me to make major progress easily. We had card shops back then and I could save up my paper route money, etc., and go and get lots of cards. I remember buying my 1965 Topps FB for $.03 each and saving up to get the Namath for around$5. 2 or 3 years ago I finally finished the Topps Hockey run. I still need to get about 125 Parkhurst Hockey and the 1950 Topps FB, 2 short print 1952 Bowman Large FB and last 11 Topps + 11 Bowman BB to complete the base 4 sports 1948 - 1980 runs. A few more 1951 Topps Ringside, including the sky rocketing short print Murphy. I=E2=99m curious as to whether my experience is typical for those collecting all the sports.I started with my childhood collection of baseball from the 1950s and before plus a little 50s football. Topps 1951 Ringside boxing is not too hard to find although I haven=E2=99t completed the set. I know that baseball cards were printed in much greater quantity than the others. My experience over the past 30 years leads me to believe that: early1950s and early 1960s football cards are quite scarce in relation to baseball, basketball is easy - thank goodness not much was issued before 1969, and hockey is tough to find =E2=93 but not terribly popular once you findthem. Earl "Eek" Kilborne and Ron Perry were able to join me. Since this is a small local show, usually with the same dealers every month, combined with my tough wantlists, I am usually happy to get at 3 solid hits at the show. Today, was fairly typical in that I picked up 2 more 1962 Jell-o's (Peter they were commons), a 1936 S and S card (only my 7th), a pair of TCMA League Leader sets (20s and 30s), a pair of hi # upgrades and the prize I was able to show off: a T-202 HassanTriple Folder A Desperate Slide for 3rd, by none other than Ty Cobb! While I only have 10% of the set, this is the 2nd biggest card in the set. I also picke dup some hi # dupes and was given a box of 1970s era BB, FB & BSKB by OBC dealer Mike Sandles. I also picked up some oddball items, that ifI can find the right list or 2, might be able to finish off someone's set. Ron Perry and I left the show early (there was nothing left to see) and headed up a local Irish sports bar in my neck of the woods to watch the Lions start their demolition of the Chiefs. Next Redford show dates are: October 9, November 13 and December 11. I will not be at the October and November shows, but expect to return in December. Thanks Eek and Ron for joining me today! This comes from being a sports fan. Living in FOOT territory, and being a fan of all sports,I root for the Central Division Tigers, The Northern Division Detroit Lions, the Eastern Conference Detroit Pistons and the Western Conference Detroit Red Wings. Add to that, Michigan is one of the few states that has multiple time zones. Most of Michigan is in the Eastern time zone and a small western portion of the Upper Peninsula is in the Central time zone. How is any young sports fan in this area expected to learn geography??? Now we have the college sports conferences changing by the hour. Texas Christian in the Big EAST, and at least for basketball playing Notre Dame? Oklahome and Oklahoma St in the PACIFIC (what number follows it at the momemnt, 8, 10, 12, 14???). This confusion extends to mathmatics. The Big "10" for years had 11 teams and thsi year expanded to 12. The Big 8, which became the Big "12", dropped to 10 this year, and may soon be the "who is left I am so confused, I think I will go and concentrate on the 500 sets I am working on. We try to assist each other with simple things such as mowing up to the drive ways instead of the lot lines, and helping with snow removal in winter. For better or worse my house and the house to the south is where the design of the houses changes. My house has the garage on the north side and the houses to the south have the garages on the south side. This makes a larger front lawn. So whereas most folks cut to the driveways, if I assist, I have to cut literally the entire front lawn for that neighbor. Considering it is a single woman, and I am a male chauvinist, I frequently do this. My mower had a piece snap off a few weeks ago, and I just got it fixed this week. Tonight I mowed our lawns, and later got a phone call from the neighbor. I was surprised she even had my number as I do not even know her last name (she has only lived there about 7 years). She had a gift for me (usually this means a cake). Tonight itwas an art piece of a 3d wood piece of Tiger Stadium with display case! This is really sharp. An Incredible end of the season, a chance for two play-in game 163's, and we got neither...but we saw two big collapses with the Wild Cards teams who each held big leads this month calling for tee times tomorrow.

And a big shout out for some Playoff regulars...Yankees, Cardinals, Tigers (sort of regular) and the amazing Phillies (my favorite 102 win team) This should be a great playoff season if the end of the year is any indication!! (kudos to the Brewers who hadan amazing season too)

Lets hear about how your season went forthe teams you cheer for.... Mine is a dream season so far!

Oh and My prediction was Phillies over Yankees in the 2011 world series...I still have a chance!

Last night I had the pleasure of meeting up with Matt Yudt here in Glasgow.Matt was attending a conference, and took the opportunity to get together with a fellow OBCer for the first time. The meet went as most do. Within 5 minutes of meeting we were yattering away as if we'd known each other for 20 years. After the traditional handing over of cards, we enjoyed a wonderful Indian meal before strolling along to Glasgow's premier whisky bar, The Pot Still. We spent the next few hours ona "whisky tour" of Scotland, sampling single malts from the western islands, the northern islands, the northern highlands, and the southern lowlands.I organised a round of golf for Matt this morning, and I can only hope that he doesn't have a hangover similar to mine!! It was a very enjoyable night. If you get the chance to meet up with Matt, be sure to take it. He really is great company!! I just got back to the U.S. from my week long trip to Glasgow. While the rest of you were enjoying the final (quite exciting) week of baseball, I was in the land of Rugby and non-American football, and pubs. Many, many pubs. And of course the land of our own Glenn Codere. I made the choice to meet up with Glenn on Wed night, the day the conference ended - thinking that if the night went late, I would not suffer in conference, but only on the golf course (more on that later). Of course, by my 2nd night there I was making many new Glaswegian friends which translated to quite a bit of early morning suffering in conference, without Glenn=92s assistance. I had been emailing with Glenn for a couple weeks to plan a night to meet and, as he mentioned, assistance in organizing a round of the ancient game in the land of its birth. Glenn and I met in a place called the Beer Caf=E9. No, not completely original name, but what a menu! (If any of you have ever been to Zeno=92s in State College, PA, you get the idea). We were both quite hungry (me, because I didn=92t eat most of the day because of the hang-over from the night before where I pretended I was in college again). So a great Indian meal and off to the Pot Still. Now I have never been a big whiskey drinker. Always preferred a good hearty ale or some nice wine with meals, but after several hours touring the country=92s finest (ok, maybe not THE fine$t, but good) I suddenly gained quite an appreciation of the art and practice of whiskey. Definitely more on the practice. I learned a lot from Glenn in that short time! And he helped me choose a few to buy at the duty free to bring back home for family and friends, which I did. And yes, the round of golf down in Troon did not start off too well. Whether it was the rented clubs I was not used to or the foggy hangover, not sure - or should I say not sure which contributed more. But by the 13th hole and a few Advil, all was well. But there was one strange thing - the taste of the smoked peet and other flavors from the night before lingered throughout the day. Once the hangover was gone, it was only slightly noticeable and enjoyable. Glasgow was great, and getting to meet my first OBCer after 7 months in the club was the highlight of the trip for sure. As Glenn said, we had enjoyable night and I hope all of you get the fortune to visit Glasgow Glenn sometime. Well worth the effort. Attached is a picture I snapped during the evening of a happy tour guide. I love the radiance and brilliant lights - almost like a cathedral (there IS some stained glass in the background too! So not that far off). Here=92s to you Glenn! Last night I had the pleasure of meeting up with Matt Yudt here in Glasgow. Matt was attending a conference, and took the opportunity to get together with a fellow OBCer for the first time. The meet went as most do. Within 5 minutes of meeting we were yattering away as if we'd known each other for 20 years. After the traditional handing over of cards, we enjoyed a wonderful Indian meal before strolling along to Glasgow's premier whisky bar, The Pot Still. We spent the next few hours on a "whisky tour" of Scotland, sampling single malts from the western islands, the northern islands, the northern highlands, and the southern lowlands. I organised a round of golf for Matt this morning, and I can only hope that he doesn't have a hangover similar to mine!! It was a very enjoyable night. If you get the chance to meet up with Matt, be sure to take it. He really is great company!!
