He has a group lot of mainly 1951 bowman BB, plus some 1951 Topps redbacks and 1950 Bowman BB, highlights are the 1951 bowman Williams, Berra and Ford rookie. He said book is over $7000 and these are in p - g (tape stains, etc.) and he is looking for $675 for the lot. I have not seen these, so have no idea if this is a good deal, but some guys may want to look into it and split the lot. Danny is usually fair, but not spectacular deals. But instead, I was treated to an envelope from the esteemed Dr. John Scott Gray, who sends along some NCAA winnings! He said he didn't have anything from my list, but wanted to send something anyway - that's what it's all about, so no problem there. Inside was a very sweet Allen and Ginter card from 1887 featuring Matasada Sorakichi...very cool, I must say!I didn't have the faintest idea who this dude was, although he looks a bit menacing. Sure enough, he was Japan's first wrestler, who toured the US taking on anybody he could fight. Sadly, he was broke and dead by the age of 32. I wonder how his fights comparedto the UFC stuff that is so popular today (which I personally can't bring myself to watch)... The card was actually wrapped in a piece of paper with a course syllabus toPhil 115 - Intro to Philosophy. Now, if you need a few credits, I will tell you that the instructor is none other than our own JSG! Here's whatyou'll have to do to get a decent grade, which I think every one of us is capable 1) Commentate on major philosophical theories and explain their assumptions-- I think a treatise on the DH rule would suffice here. 2) Develop the ability to recognize and define values -- I think he means using the new Lemke Vintage Only Price Guide. 3) Develop the critical faculties as they relate to evaluating philosophical systems -- I think he meant reading box scores of Philadelphia and their farm 4) Develop the ability to articulate one's own positions both verbally and in written form -- I think that means holding up a sign that says "Wait Till Next Year" on Opening Day at Wrigley, then berating Alfonso Soriano when he swings at another throw to first. 5) Look at the issues, works, or histrorical events from different perspectives -- I think he means the difference of thinking of Steve Bartman as theanti-christ, or maybe just as the guy who kept the Cubs losing the World Series a week or so later. 6)Gain increased self-understanding through works of philosophy -- I think he wants us to readBall Four, The Boys of Summer, Bang the Drum Slowly, and The Great American Card Flipping Book 7) Increase the inclination to engage in the humanties as a way of better understanding themselves and their world or enhancing the quality of their lives -- I think he means that if you catch a foul ball, you should give it to a kid. Wantlists were paired, money spent, wives amused, pizza eaten, Chicago visited, Cubs and Soxs observed, friendships renewed, hats and pins (OBC Scotland) displayed. Geno's inquiry got me thinking a little more seriously about the National. I'm glad you asked. Here are some thoughts: 1. Attendance seemed decent, not like 20 years ago but steady. You weren't crowded out at any tables I visited. 2. There were plenty of dealers (don't know how many) although there was plenty of open convention space also. Probably half of the dealers don't really have much cardboard. 3. Attendance for kids under 12 was free and there were some kids around but not as many as you'd think. It wasn't a very diverse crowd. 1. Getting in was a breeze. Most people pre-paid, lined up, and then walked in ASAP when the doors opened. You didn't really need to stand in line - although people did anyway for some reason, probably because they didn't know how the admission would be handled. 2. The normal autograph and other announcements were barely noticeable, no ear-splitting repeat autograph ticket reminders. I don't even know who was there. 3. The Olympic pin dealers were in a separate area and no one was selling Beanie babies or any such thing. 4. It seemed like all the OBC certified dealers were there. 5. Running into OBCers and other vintage collectors. The OBC hats help, plus dealers know who we are. Things that could be better: 1. Admission was $20, or about $12 overpriced. 2. I didn't see much of anything given away other than the current issue of SCD (see Vrechek article) and the SMR price report. If there were freebees, they were a secret. 3. There was no convention program (of any use). 4. There were no break-out seminars or sessions like they had 25 years ago. Just spend some money. 5. It would be ideal for OBC buyers if they separated vintage card dealers from the rest of the dealers in photos, balls, uniforms, etc. etc. (They could also put dealers in graded cards someplace else and it would be fine with some of us.) 6. If some dealer was there you wanted to see, you would have to stumble across them. 7. There was a large corporate center section but nothing that grabbed my attention, mostly open space and "nothing" displays. Topps was there but they didn't seem to want to talk to anyone when I breezed by. 8. Card pricing is as clear as mud. Some dealers don't price individual cards but say something like 50% of book. "Book" turns out to be an optimistic selling price in Beckett for a near mint card, something that is rare indeed. The prices for VG-EX cards are shrouded in mystery. A typical exchange is: Dealer - "This card books for $30, you can have it for $15." Buyer: "If this card were mint, it would be $30 but it is in VG so it should be about $8 and you want to charge me about double the right price. That's like saying that this card would be $100 if Mickey Mantle were on it and instead it is a picture of Sibby Sisti." Overall, I'd say it was Good to Very Good, which is up our alley I guess. The best part of the whole National experience is seeing other OBC'ers. I got to meet Glenn Codere as soon as I walked in on Thursday morning, and then TJ Valacak & Richard Labs soon after, both at Kurt Tourdot's table. There was more than one time when there were 6 to 8 of us looking through Kurt's bargain bin. Going downtown as a group to eat at Mother Hubbards on Thursday; going back downtown with my wife on Friday with Sal, Kent, Glenn & Glenn's wife Maureen, then up to the Sky Deck at the Sears Tower (103 floors above the street on a sheet of plexiglass is not for those of us who don't like heights) & then to the Cubs game (Sal is avery good bargainer with ticket scalpers), and of course the swap session - those are the best times for me. The kindness and friendship shown not only to me, but to my wife, was priceless. Now, on to the show. Went Thursday & Saturday & I still didn't feel like a saw everything. Of course part of the reason was spending so much time at the unofficial OBC home base: Kurt's table. I managed to knock off about half of my '54 Bowman set those two days - including some of the variations (the base list is down to 10), and I also got to do some real damage to my '64 & '59 Topps sets. Sal Domino handed me a set-killer: the 1975 Topps mini Nolan Ryan. Kent Goto turned my '52 Red Man set from a type card set to having almost half the set, with an envelope containing 25 cards. Walking the convention floor will really take a toll on your legs & feet though! George had a great suggestion, one that crossed my mind too: it sure would be nice if they sectioned off the floor - vintage in one area, memorabilia in another, maybe tables with mostly or all graded stuff in another. Of course the convention organizers probably want people wandering around, but it sure would be nice to know exactly where to go to find what you're looking It's always a treat to be greeted by dealers who see the OBC hat & are happy to get rid of their beaters & to make good deals. Kurt was especially friendly to us - in fact he remarked that he'd seen Glenn's web page, so there's someone who looks out for us! A big thanks to Mike Rich for organizing the badges. None of us want to waste money on admission - got to save the money for the cardboard - so kicking in a few bucks for using the dealer badges is a great deal. Thanks to thedealers who helped us out with that! Glenn gave all of us "OBC/Scotland" pins to decorate our hats with, which we were all happy to get. Thanks to everyone at the swap session for letting me go through their dupes. I felt like my dupes box contribution to the effort was small, so I'm going to make an effort to send some stuff out soon. Speaking of the swap session, I thought I had an emergency after it wrappedup: I had my license & credit card in my pocket. As we're walking out to the lot at the end, I put my hand in my pocket - and no credit card, no license, no hotel room key. The guys checked all over the swap session area, inMike Rich's car, & in the parking lot, for what seemed like 20 minutes. I was resigned to the fact they were lost when the light bulb went on: at onepoint I had shoved some cards in that pocket, then later pulled them out &put them in the card box I was putting my pulls into. Could it be? Yep - it wasn't just the baseball cards I pulled out of the pocket: the license, credit card & hotel key were in the box. Thanks to everyone who helped me look. If you've never been to a National, you really need to come & experience it. I was very happy to see the big OBC presence: Domino, Rich, Goto, Rittenberg, Codere, Perry, Mandell, Valacak, Labs, Vrechek, Wubben, Glidden, Gersbach, Leroux, Mroz, Stufflestreet, Wierzbicki, & VCT'ers Mike Mackie, Steve Etzel, & Larry Biel. (here is mac's Geno (and all), That is my one regret...no chicago style pizza. Fortunately I have plenty of new cardboard to comfort The rest of my national report... After missing out on reasonably priced tickets, I decided to hitch a ride with some net 54 guys. So we drove 12 hours to get to the show...arriving in time for the opening wednesday session. The wednesday session was slower than usual for me...as generally I find this is by far the best day to shop...few crowds and fresh inventory. I landed one t207 from the table Chris S. was working, a couple of 1914 Cracker Jacks (including Bender), a pair of 65 old london coins...that's about it. Went to TGI Friday's (or someplace like it) with the OBC crew...the lure of half price appetizers proved too much, and we hunkered down in the bar area to take advantage. Thursday was going kind of slow...but then I hit the mother load of Cracker Jacks...bought 12 from one table (brown, tinker, schalk, bresnahan and 8 commons)...in way too nice condition, but priced very nicely. So I emptied the wallet on that batch...fortunately there was a cash machine close by. Shifted my focus a bit to some post war and managed to find a near set of 65 old london coins...beat Mike Rich to the punch on those, so now I only need one (Vada Pinson anyone?), and amazingly OPC baseball. I pick up about 40 opc hits to some tough lists. Roamed around...found the last e96 I needed (set completed!). I noticed that t205's seemed a bit more plentiful that in years past...there were several reasonably priced Joss cards on the floor, as well as a fair number of SP's. I passed on most of them. I didn't find the last t202 I needed...found the alternate caption (Rustlers) version of the Matty Devlin twice...but not the one I needed. I also noticed three or four black factory 30's...which Geno probably cares about. The guys had a bunch of t202's, but the common prices were ridiculous. I did manage to pick up a couple of fairly priced commons though. Also stopped by Mark Macrae's table a bit...chatted about zeenuts and blankets for a bit...always a pleasure to talk to him. I grabbed a nicely priced Stengel blanket from him too. After the show, the herd of cats went over to Steve R's long lost (non) cousin's place for a free round, plus food. Friday...not much to report...Steve bird-dogged a CJ at Ron Estes table (a real obc favorite)...thanks Steve (and Ron). Then I was off to Wrigley with a friend from my long ago college days. For the first time I was able to sit in the outfield bleachers...great experience. Cubbies won, saw an inside the park homer, drank beer...cooked in the sun....but had a great time. Saturday. Hung around the show...visiting tables for the third or fourth time. Finally broke down and bought the biggie that I'd been eyeing since wednesday...an E95 Ty Cobb (oh yeah). Thrilled to have that one. I spent most of the rest of the day showing it off to anyone who would look at it. The highlight is always the swap...and this year was no exception. Overall turnout at the show was pretty good...many of the regular crew...though regulars Rob G and Ken M were missed. I got to meet some people for first time and was reaquainted with Cardboard always flies your way from OBC'ers...and it is very often hard to keep track. A special thanks to TJ Valacak for letting me raid his OPC sets for a bunch of hits and for starting me on ...to Mike Rich for finishing the 69 OPC sets (mclain cl & oliver rookie) along with some 34 Canadian Goudey. Other great hits include a pile of 40 PB's from Kent Goto, 53 T bio variations from Gersh and Weirzbicki (if I am recollecting correctly), Rick K for a 51 bowman high, Rittenberg for a CPC Lajoie, Vrechek for a Kelloggs, Sal D for a pile of early basketball...and to the others that I've forgotten. Generally I thought prices were all right. Not too many tables have what I'm looking for, but when they did, generally the prices were pretty good. Thrilled with all the CJ's I landed, happy to have found OPC, completed two sets, and landed two t207 hits. I guess the lowlights would be missing out on the last t202 again and not finding any good prices on T3's....and not having nearly as many cards for OBC'ers as I should. Thanks to all for another great national...and hope to see everyone in Baltimore next To: obc-ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: illini_grad_90@yahoo.com Sun, 7 Aug 2011 14:06:37 -0700 Subject: [OBC-Ramblings] National OBCers -- So where are all the reports from the show? Driving from western Wisconsin, I noticed around Madison that I had left my laptop at home. Not a huge deal normally. I've "unplugged" before. However, the other items in the bag--my wantlist, the OBC preferred dealer list, and my cell phone--made this bout of forgetfulness sting just a little more. My apologies especially to TJ, who had left a message for me to meet him and shake his hand. Raincheck, TJ. I have always had a phobia about driving in and around Chicago. Then a fewyears ago I had to go to a conference there and didn't find it terribly upsetting. In fact, I had seen the Donald Stephens Center on the way and thought "I could get there!". Looking at the printouts I made from Google Maps (and fortunately put in the car rather than my bag), I wasn't terribly confident in that statement. Tenth of a mile here, turn, three-tenths of a mile, exit...blah blah blah. The worries were for naught, though, as we arrived at our hotel right across the street from the show with nary a problemon Friday morning at just after 10:00. Hands still slightly shaking, I accompanied my son Andrew (age 11), daughter Camryn (age 9), and wife Shelley(no age given) across the skywalk and in to the abyss of collectables. The first thing that stunned me was that there was no line to get in. I recalled standing in a line that stretched around the convention center in St. Louis. Nothing of the sort on Friday. Walked right up to get tickets, then walked right in to the show. Is this normal? Shelley made a quick observation that maybe we should start at the back andwork our way forward. That's why I married her, folks. She's a sharp one. Working our way back, we stopped at a few booths like Freedom Cardboard where the kids got a bunch of stress balls and free cards. Mostly a UV focus, but I love any collector-to-collector avenue for buying cards, so I made it a point to sign up for their forums when I got home. We also stopped at Blowout Cards, where they were handing out t-shirts and raffle tickets. Very friendly guys and the drawing at 2:00 was well attended. Looks like they have some nice prices on supplies, too, so I'll probably send some business their way. Shelley and Camryn split away from us for a while and I was later amazed that they found a place to buy some "Littlest Pet Shop" stuffed animals. Camryn has a knack for sniffing that sort of stuff out, so maybe I shouldn't be all that stunned. Andrew and I spent most of the day seeking out good deals on Philadelphia Eagles stuff (his team, not mine) and cheap game-used football and baseball cards. I didn't have my wantlist, but I really didn'tcare. It was all about spending time with the family (mostly Andrew, but with the girls, too when they were there) and sharing the wonderful hobby with them. I was pleased to see so many dealers that were so friendly to us. We found several Eagles items for Andrew's room, and a bunch of cheap cards, too. Andrew got free cards from a several different dealers...and gotan autograph from a "Benchwarmer" girl at the Leaf table. He's such a charmer. Total number of pre-1980 cards purchased? Zero. I spent a lot of "me" time digging through various dollar bins for oversized cards, promotional and regional items, and just plain oddball stuff. I also picked up a Purdue game-used jersey for $10. My "big" purchase was a Milwaukee Brewers BP jersey worn by Ruben Quevedo. It was a style of jersey I had wanted for some time--and it was a happy coincidence that it was worn by a Brewer I kind of liked. For a couple of weeks. So, no vintage cards and two jerseys--and I don't even collect jerseys. That's the way the dice roll sometimes. There are a couple of things I will do differently next time (Chicago, 2013): *Attend more than one day. I had promised Andrew we would go this year, but then a great price came up on a trip to Hawaii and we couldn't pass it up(As of next week, Aloha everyone!). As a compromise we decided to just goone day to the National. By the end we were literally just walking up anddown the aisles trying to finish and not really enjoying all the stuff. If we can split it out into even two days we could feel refreshed enough to go back and dig again. We both felt we could have went back and had just as much fun as day 1. *Spend MORE time at those dollar bins. That was some serious fun. Thinking about looking for a definitive checklist of those 8x10 Upper Deck Commemoratives as I picked up a boatload of them. Coolest item I picked up in these bins was a poster for a Bobby Grich appearance that had small versions of each of his Topps cards in perforated form. Loved it. *Try to attend the card swap and meet some OBCers. I'll need some tips as to what to bring, though. Whatever it is, though, I promise to not put it in my laptop bag. *Don't forget anything. ================= Date: Tue, 9 Aug 2011 11:53:40 -0500 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: Steve Rittenberg Subject: Another cool baseball card related blog post I found a blog post about Renatta Galasso. It's a BLAST. Ok I'm going back to my old days (before there was a Ken Morganti and Morgantiesque, I tending to write books). Some of you remember when we started the OBCAC and my 4 million word essay lol. Lets start at the end. It took me 12 hours to get to my front door Sunday. My flight was canceled, but AA was nice enough to put me on a flight for the next day. I told them "I don't think so, find me a flight today!". Found a flight with Delta that started at 6, went to 7 then to 9 then to 8. Told by AA my luggage would arrive with their next flight. The luggage place would be open til midnight to pick it up. Got there at 5 to 12. Whewwwww! On with the show... Had the bestest time meeting some new faces this time around. Glenn and Maureen added the international flavor this time around. Even though I couldn't get Glenn to go IN to the Sears tower and kept dogging him about collecting Green tints. Hell, he collects the other variations, you HAVE to have the Greenies! Steve finally forced that on him. Glenn tasted most of the brews Chicago could offer, especially at the Sears tower, where he went to a local pub. Only looking down he did was to the bottom of his glass! Convinced Tom and Cherie to make the trip to pick up a set killer. Very cool to meet the halves who let us play with "cardboard pictures of men". Had a few issues getting Cubs tickets on Friday, but I blew off all the scalpers and we made our way in to the game and saw an inside the parker! Sharing a brew along the way makes it extra special! Kent, my National buddy and myself ate our way thru Chicago. We decided we can't do that again, we need more money for cards in Baltimore! As always Kent, a pleasure to let you hang on to my coattails lol! Got to catch up with a lot of old (and I mean OLD) friends. George Vrechek is the variation king. Showed him my find of the show- a 58 Pinson that had NO name printed on the front. I'm calling it a variation! Gary Mandell was doing some serious hunting, but at least I didn't have to take a bus ride from his place of business this time where I thought I lost my cell phone (more on near losses later). Rich Dingman always finds a hot box, parks his ass down and comes up with gems. I need to hang with him more. I missed Jason Christopherson Friday as we were at the Cubs game. Damn that sucks! John Leroux always has something cool he's looking for and handed me a stack of cool cards! TJ is the son I never had. he gets as excited as anyone, not only cardboard, but seeing his OBC friends! I wish we had more time to hang out. Gersh, with backpack and organized list in hand, had a few nice finds. Spike is the other son I didn't have. The KING of Kut up Kards! Who else can create his own League Leaders card out of other cards? Mike Mroz, the man is the silent killer. Doesn't say much, but I make up for that! Chris Stufflestreet had a Guru graded box at the swap and worked throughout the show for one of our dealers. Rich Labs I finally got a chance to BS with more on this trip, but not nearly enough. Ron Perry didn't find all the blue backs this time around. But that is one guy you want around when you are trying to make a deal! Didn't really get a chance to hang with MIke Mackie, but we'll make up for that in Baltimore. Mike Wierszbicki made a surprise visit (because I didn't have him on my list). Love talking old baseball with Mike! And damn I missed Joel's call on my cell phone! Next year Joel! What can I say about Steve Rittenberg and Mike Rich. The OBC twins always ALWAYS there to help out or just throw cards at you. Mike did an amazing job with the badges (I think we got this down now) and Steve kept texting me about how many 58s I still needed.Oh yeah and he found that damn Venezuelan Ryan I've been looking for, but I wasn't in the mood to sell my house to get it (See Spikes pics, I damn near fell off my chair laughing). Now lets talk about 58s-- I planned on making a few hits to most of my needs and added a few Islanders, Knicks and other minor wants. I would have been happy to knock off 6 of the 12 58s I needed. The first day at the show I did just that. So I got the bug to try to finish it. "yeah there are two commons, I can find those, if I'm lucky I can get a cheap Maris...Damn I can taste it!" Well I was getting pretty damn close. And what killed me was finding someone with an Aaron Yellow (YES variation). All the while I was thinking of a Stan Hack attack for someone else. Well did the tables TURN on me! Stan must have dropped by the swap session. Steve handed me the Maris, the Dodger special AND the Yellow Aaron!! That set is finished except for a few Yellows. I can't thank you guys ENOUGH for that sneak attack! Man, that was amazing and definitely the highlight of my week! Speaking of thanks... Kent was a set killer with a 91 Fleer Ultra. Been looking for that damn card nearly 20 years. Also for the ride were a few extra UV Mets that I cant find and a Munson! Leroux- a nice stack of 62s including Gil, Boog, Babe and a bunch of leader cards! Mike W (I wont butcher the name again) added some more 62s including a Bob's pupils card! TJ- Knocks off even more 62s (we seeing a pattern here?) and a few 67s hi's, most of which are Mets! Inbound on the mail side-- Ken Pillon is a set killer with 85D's of Kirby and Nolan and another Thurman! I found a few things for you at the National Ken, so expect some mail before Christmas! Spike- a trio of 62s, but no ordinary ones...one is a Kaline! Oh did I mention (GLENN), that its a greenie? I can't thank you guys enough. If I didn't even find two cards I needed, it's just amazing getting together every year with this bunch of guys (and gals!). And meeting a new OBCer too! You meet someone in person and you've known them forever. It's been almost 20 years for me in OBC and I still get that kid in a candy store look when we horde in on a table and start comparing cards. And thanks to our dealers. They make it fun for us. We are without question, the most well known baseball card group on the planet. Looks like we are going to need new hats soon and spread em around. Its our signature and sense of pride. Pretty cool when someone either knows the group or actually knows your name! Well, that's about it for now (isn't it enough?). Baltimore or Bust! PS- and oh about the near loss. I left my bag at a table on Sunday. Talk about sheer PANIC! Somehow I was able to retrace my steps and a guy must have seen my face... "you looking for a black bag?" "YES" "its over there behind the table"...Whewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww! ================= To: Date: Sat, 13 Aug 2011 10:35:32 -0400 From: Mac Wubben Subject: Heroes Needed and New Sets A couple sets are down to one card...any heroes out there? 1965 Embossed: 16 Brooks Robinson 1965 Old London Coin: Pinson (have mantle, mays, aaron to trade) New sets: 1976 Hostess Need: 1-66 67-150 1970 Kelloggs Need: 1-36 38-41 43-70 71A (59 IP blank) 71B (59 IP 76) 72-75 Thanks in advance...and trades always welcome. ================= Date: Sat, 13 Aug 2011 14:47:38 -0400 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: Subject: New set s added! Well, following the OBC dictum, if you have one, it's a type set, if you have two, you're collecting, I've added a few sets to my list. Finally got around to adding the OPC sets from 65-74, as well as a couple of Play Ball, and the missing 50 and 52 Bowman sets. Now I am definitely guaranteed to never complete the list, but that's fine. I believe there is an ancient curse that sets "When you complete your wantlist, you die". ================= Date: Sun, 14 Aug 2011 03:56:24 -0000 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: "tjv815" Subject: National Report Wow! What an experience. I had attended my first National back in 2008 when it was here in Chicago. Still, I was blown away with the event. Going into the show, I decided to set a few collecting goals =96 priorities. I targeted my 1961 and 1962 Topps sets and was looking to bring both to completion at the show. The 61 set was down to six cards, Koufax, Ruth 60HR, Craig hi#, Skowron all-star, Aaron all-star, and the Mantle all-star. The 62 set was sitting at 5 cards. Legendary Bill Bruton, Yaz, MacCovey, Moe Thacker and the Uecker rookie. I felt that both of these sets were well withinreach and I was excited to start my search. For myself, the Big Show started on Thursday morning with Mike Rich meeting me out in front with a badge. Inside the show, we headed straight to Kurt Tourdot's table =96 which seemed to be a gathering point every day for OBCers. At Kurt's table, I managed to do some damage to my 53 Bowman black and white, the 50 Bowman set, found a few 52 Topps, and made a huge dent into the 1963 set with the purchase of the Rose rookie. So, after visiting one table at the National, I expanded my collecting goal and added the 63 set as a priority. With Rose knocked off the list, I was down to 7 cards =96 Bouton, Indians team, Freehan rc, Tresh, Lou Brock, Nellie Fox, and McNally rc. After Kurt's table, I headed over to Uncle Dick's. Although I wasn't able to hit my 61 62 or 63 sets with some off grade cards, I was able to make a few more dents into my Bowman sets and my Bears team set in his dollar and 2 dollar boxes. Throughout the day, I was not able to make many dents in the three priority sets, but I did knock off the 62 Yaz and a 61 all-star Mantle. The Mantle was a real nice card and a great addition to that set. I also picked up a number of hits to my newly listed 1956 Topps football set.(Shortly before the National, Brian Betza had decided that I needed to add that set to my collection.) On the way out, Gary, Gersh and I went across the stret for a beer. My plan was to let traffic die down and head to Mother Hubbards. Well, the beer was cold and we stayed longer than I had planned. No Hubbards, but a great day. On Friday, I was able to get to the show for a few hours before my wife headed off to work. Going into the National, I wasn't even sure I would attend on Friday, but things worked out and I made it for a few hours. I was glad I did, as Friday saw the completion of one of my priority sets. While wandering around the convention floor, I ended up at William Chapelle's table. I looked through some stacks of 61's and 62's, but they were a little too sharp for me. He directed my to some lower grade star cards. Immediately, I spotted a 63 Brock. Nice looking and William accepted my low ball offer (I'm convinced the OBC hat had a lot to do with that). So, now I was down to just 6 cards on the 63 set. Minutes later, as I was walking the floor, I heard "Hey, I've got an OBC box for you." That was how I was introduced to Dick Zimmerman. Dick handed me a box and said half off everything in the plastic, and the loose cards area dime a piece. Cool. Well, I didn't find anything in the plastic holders, but searching the loose singles, Ifound a 63 Bouton =96 one of my last six. I grabbed 9 others to make an even buck and looked to square up with Dick. Well, Dick didn't have change for a $20, but said he would hold the cards for me. He also said maybe hisfriend might have some hits for my list. I hadn't realized that Dick was working at JD's table. I had checked in with JD on Thursday, but didn't make any purchases. Friday was different. I started by looking through the 61's. Found an Aaron all-star for $30. I was very happy with that price. A few beat up 52 Topps high numbers. No luck in the 62 pile. Then to the63's. He had the Indians team card. Freehan rc. Tom Tresh, Nellie Fox, and the McNally rookie. They weren't beaters, so I was a little hesitant, but JD put together a nice price for the 63's the Aaron, and some other gems I found. With that, I was back to Dick Zimmerman, squaring up on the 10 cent Jim Bouton to finish my 1963 set! Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't tell you how exciting it was to complete that one. On the way out, I stopped by a table that had thousands of $1 items. Picked up 4 67 pin ups and decided that I would add that set to the wantlist. (little did I know I wouldadd 5 sets to the list by the end of Saturday). Warning =96 UV paragraph =96 Another blast of excitement came my way on Friday as I picked up a box of the 1981 Topps Scratch offs for $8. I can still remember getting these cards as a kid. Tearing them into the separate players, picking teams, and scratching off a game. Over a year ago, I found a few of my cards at my parents' house and there was a scratch off card in the find. Since then, I have been looking to start the set. Looking at ebay, I have found the set for around 10 bucks. But, picking up the box, it will give me a chance to build it myself, which should be pretty fun. Plus, I can see if I can find that last scratch off for Mike Mroz. Moving to Saturday, I was still trying to finish those 61 and 62 sets. Unfortunately for myself, I had to add a card to my 61 wantlist. While I was putting cards in the binder Friday night, I noticed a gremlin. The Kaline all-star. Well, at least I knew about it now instead of later. I was not able to make any further dents at the show on my 61 and 62 sets on Saturday. I did hit my OPC sets a little, although I couldn't find any 71 opc. Found some more football. Passed on a big lot of 64 Giants from A to Z. Gotto meet Mike Sandles, a great guy and everything I've read about in the FOOT rambles about him is true. Picked up a bunch of 70's football for a nickel a piece from Mike. At the end of the show, Glenn, Mike Mroz and I had a beer across the street and then headed over to the Comfort Inn for the Swap. The Swap is easily the main event of National week for any OBCer. Thanks again to all those who helped me out. I spent a good hour looking through Mike Rich's 75 minis ( I should have just sorted them for you). Pizza was great, the room was great. Thanks again to Richard, Steve and Mike for setting that up. On top of some hits to my lists, Mike Mroz started me on the 76 football set, and the 78 Burger King Tigers and yanks. (the 65 embossedfrom Spike/Mike/Kent and the 67 pin ups round off the five added sets). Just a great night and a great event, highlighted with meeting some OBCers for the first time (Richard D and Richard L, Glenn, Tom, Steve and Chris) and seeing others for the first time since the 2008 National (Sal, Kent, Mike W., John, Mac, Spike). Of course, it's always nice to see the FOOT gang out (Mike, Ron, Mike M) and to catch up with some of Chicago's own (George and Gary). Thanks again to everyone. I've already put the bug in my wife's ear about Baltimore! ================= Date: Sun, 14 Aug 2011 04:19:07 -0000 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: "tjv815" Subject: New sets added As mentioned in my National thanks and National ramble, I have added a few sets in the month of August. Here's the list with a little background for each. 1956 Topps Football - Brian Betza and I have been exchanging envelopes as long as I can remember. In his lastest edition of return fire, Brian included 3 cards from the 1956 Topps football set and stated that it was time forme to add another football set to my collection. I managed to find a number of hits in the $1-$2 range at the National to make a nice dent in this newly listed set. Thank you Brian! 1965 Topps Embossed - Courtesy of Spike Glidden, Mike Mroz, and Kent Goto. This one was literally handed to me at the swap. I'm still not sure what hit me, but I know I am grateful for the huge starter set that included some HOFers. I already had a few from this set, so I am already off to a great start on the 65 embossed. Thanks Spike, Mike and Kent. 1967 Topps Pin Ups - I found a four pack of these guys as I was searching atable at the National. I believe the gents name was Chandy. He had huge bins filled with everything, and everything was priced at $1. This one waseasy and I needed no arm twisting in persuading myself to start this set up. 1976 Topps Football - This one came to me via Mike Mroz at the Saturday swap. Mike was trying to tell me that I had a tough list to hit. I tried to counter that by saying I had added a 79 football set. I guess that wasn't enough, as he handed me close to $150 cards from the 76 set. The bonus is that I had picked up about 30 76 cards from Mike Sandles earlier in the day. They survived the swap session in my dupes box, and now I was able to cross them off my list. Thanks Mike. I am looking forward to picking up that Payton rookie. 1978 Tigers and yanks - Again, courtesy of Mike Mroz. Mike had his dupe box right in front of me. I saw some 78's, got excited thinking I might hit some for my 78 project. Instead, I got excited seeing some different 1978 Topps cards. Mike allowed me to take all but the Billy Martin. Thanks for getting me going on the Burger Kings Mike! So there you have it. Five sets added. What a month! Any help is appreciated and I will do my best to return fire. http://www.oldbaseball.com/wantlists/valacak.htm ================= To: "OBC-Ramblings" , Date: Sun, 14 Aug 2011 07:54:06 -0400 From: "Mark Holland" Subject: Carolina Panther Football Lots I am looking to swap lots from your team for cards depicting my beloved Carolina Panthers. She is usually an intense planner but had said for most of the past few months that she was too busy to find me a gift. At one point, I even sent her alist of cardboard that might make for a nice gift when she said that she had done nothing about the anniversary. I should have known that something was up when she ignored that and then got mad at me for reserving a bed and breakfast on the night of the anniversary. But I was oblivious. Last Tuesday night I came home from work, picked her up, and took her and the kids to a restaurant to meet my parents for dinner. The kids were going to stay with my parents for a couple of nights while we had a little stay-cation. This has been a really busy summer for both of us--so that sounded good to me. After dinner, we handed the kids off and she asked if Iwanted to get dessert. I was not too excited about the idea, but I wentalong with it. I suggested a place to the east of us that I wanted to try. She vetoed that idea and went instead towards Indianapolis (an hour drive). Again I should have been suspicious--but I was not. Instead of going to dessert, she pulls into an airport hotel. There are two bags in the car--fully packed. She tells me to take one of them and not open theother. I have now caught on that we are going somewhere, but I don't yet know where--and she refuses to tell me. The next morning we check in at the airport--I still don't know where we are going--and she hands me the tickets. The end destination is Providenciales. I am pretty good with place names and I have never heard of this one so I begin the process of elimination. It is not until we get on the plane that I figure out we are going to the Turks and Caicos Islands. Wewere there for 5 great days of snorkeling, kayaking, parasailing, eating and drinking. I have snorkeled before (though not for about 10 years) andlike to keep track of the fish that I have seen. This trip knocked a sea turtle, ray, porcupinefish, and what looked like a Nassau Grouper off of my wantlist. It turns out she had been planning this for almost a year and she pulled this off without me ever catching on. Pretty amazing stuff. On the way home yesterday, we were walking through the Miami airport when she sees Jimmy Fallon riding on one of those airport carts. She runs him down, gets a picture, and then starts talking to him. He is a completelydown to earth guy--really pleasant and fun. I NEVER watch his show but,on the plane down to the islands, I did see one segment with Bob Costas where they were taking 1989 Topps packs, chewing the gum, and flipping the cards. The sound was off (I never buy those headphones), but I did wonder what the gum tasted like. So I asked him. In case you are all wondering, according to Jimmy Fallon, 22-year old Topps gum is like chewing powdery thin pieces of chalk. All in all, this was the most amazing anniversary surprise I can ever imagine. What a wonderful wife! Oh yeah, as an added bonus, we came home to an anniversary card written in orange and blue by my son with METS spelled out and a picture of a baseballdiamond (so a little baseball was slipped in at the end). In any case, with the National in Chicago, just 90 minutes away, I wanted to see if Icould get down and see the guys. It was only on friday that I was able to arrange things to attend on Saturday, driving down with Mike Mackie.. The show was great! I met three OBCers for the first time (Richard Labs,Richard Dingman, and Glenn Codere), and renewed old friendships with another 15 or so. The show was fun. I spent much of my time (and budget) at Kurt Tourdot'stable, with a handful of purchases at a few other tables. I was able toknock off quite a few commons from my 1953 Bowman list.I also found a few 1967 high numbers at Uncle Dick's table! The highlight of the day was the swap session. Since I had not known that I would attend until the day before, I was able to give envelopes to about a dozen members of the group, without their being able to give me anything in return. (This is my sneaky way of making sure that they owe me at least a look at my list :-) ). For those of you who havent attendedthe National, I can tell you that I have always found the swap session as much as or more fun than the show itself! Wesharea love of old cardboard and swap stories about baseball, our favorite teams, our finds from the show, and some pizza. I especially enjoyed swapping stories about myMilwaukee Braves with Sal Dominoand Ron Perry. Kent Goto let me go through his dupes box and I found a few hits. Ron showed me a lot of off-grade 1955 Bowmans he picked up for a quarter each--what do you know? One of the five cards on my wantlist for that set, a high-number umpire, was in group and promptly was knocked off my list. Steve Rittenberg thre an old Packer card my way, along with a 1961 mini of Ed Mathews. For those who are new to the group, I am a longtime Milwaukee Braves, Milwaukee Brewers, and Green Bay Packers fan. (Yes, I am from Wisconsin). So if my wantlist is too hard to hit, I am always happy to receive anythingrelated to my teams. I think all of the pictures were of celebrities. For me, that's "all of them". Maybe someone can explain but spending lots of money for picture of a player with an autograph that someone else stood in line for (or mailed away for) is not something I will ever put in my house. When I had control over what went up on my walls (i.e. my single days), I had my T3 Tris Speaker up on my hall, the Red Sock (stirrup) that Glenn Codere sent me, a wrapper from a Wade Boggs candy bar and other eclectic stuff. But a $500 framed picture? Maybe I'd spend $20 on an unframed picture of something weird like Kermit the Frog or the robot from the movie Forbidden Planet or Gort from The Day the Earth Stood Still. I am typing this from my new laptop computer. This was the first computer I have purchased this century. I have also switched over to Comcast cable connection, from my former dial up (yes I was still using dial up). Last impediment to being prepared thsi year, was developing carpal tunnel syndrome a week before going and still have significant discomfort. All of that said, I was still able to arrange to get a pair of dealer badges, which we used in our normal OBC fashion, to get everyone in at a great discount and raise funds for various OBC purposes. I went to the show needing 1 card to finish off 28 different sets. Many ofthose were on my target list for the show, as well as working on prewar sets. There are a few of us, that are working on "every (sport) set known toman (prewar). John Scott Gray usually challenges me as to who can get hits to the most vintage sets at the show. JSG was not there this year, and that was a good thing as I only got hits to approximately 100 vintage sets. That is significantly less than usual. Ron Perry and I have travelled to many a show together. This was no different as Ron made our rooming arrangements (a story in itself) ad after picking him up, 4 hours later we arrived about 25 minutes after the preview started. I immediately stopped by Larry "Cut-Throat" Kerrigan's table. Larry informed me he had just purchased a complete run of Mantle cards and they were being graded. He thought there would be 1 or 2 I would be interested in. A short time later, he had them back and I bought a PSA 1 1951 Bowman Mantle to complete the set. While this will sound like an oxymoron, this isthe nicest PSA 1 I have ever seen. With my spending money substantially completed, there was still plenty of time to shop on Wednesday nite. I stopped by a dealer who is working on his own 63 Jell-o set, named Doak. Doak mainly sells video tapes of famous sporting events, but also had some Exhibit cards and some low conditioned 1935 Goudeys. Picked up a couple Exhibits and then a small stack of 35 Goudeys. Even in their low condition status, some were significant upgrades (which will tell you the condition of my near set). Among the hits (not an upgrade) was the Ruth! So I am now down to 2 35 Goudeys. Not a bad first day, a Mantle and a Ruth. I think 9 of us ended up at dinner at Friday's, and we were joined by dealer Chandy. Thursday, brought more OBCers and a chance to see more of the show. Pickedup a 1964 Topps Stand up of Mantle and a 1952 Wheaties of Williams in action. That got the Wheaties to within 2, both women in action cards. We ended up at Mother Hubbards on Thursday nite, and I think there were 18 of us for that event. Friday was a lighter day for OBCers as many went to the ballgame. I still had only seen about 1/3 of the show, so that took priority for me. Unfortunately, missed Jason Christopherson and family. Big pick up was a pair of B-18 balnkets of Cobb and Walter Johnson, that a number of OBCers had seen, but nobody asked what the discounted price was. Sticker was $125 each, got them both for $100 combined from Cutthroat Larry again. Friday dinner was at Shoeless Joes. Nice memorablia, but the food was not very good. Saturday, saw the purchase of a group lot of 1948 R-346 Blue Tints, including Gehrig, Robinson and Williams! Also got some 1933 Sports Kings, to get over the 1/2 way mark. Ron Perry showed me a dealer where I picked up a few 49 Leaf BB to get me down to just Waner, before the shortprints are attempted. I also did something I rarely do: made a swap with a dealer. About120 1974 OPC BB commons for a few 1965 Old London coins. Funny story. Mac had already bought some Old Loondon coins from this dealer, Paul Korbst, to get wihtin 1, Pinson. When Mac saw Paul had OPC BB, he went through them and was very disappointed that he did not need a single one, even though he needs 1/2 the set. Reason, I had already long ago pulled all Mac and most other OBCers needed, before swapping them. By the way, I am now down to 2 OL dLondon coins myself, Colavito & Friend. Ironically,Mac had purchased both from Paul on Wednesday. I also picked up my 1981-2 Topps Basketball Larry Bird to complete my Topps BSKB run from 1959- when they stopped making them in the early 80s. Saturday nite was the swap, which is always the highlite of the show for me. Get a chance to see almsot everyone at once, BS, swap cards, etc. Fantastic! Sunday, was a sparse showing for OBC. Many had already headed back home orwere on teir way. Fortundately, Steve was still there, bird-dogging for me. He found a stack of R311 and R312 at Chandy's table which was marked down for the last day of the show. He also pointed out a bunch of 1948 ToppsMagic Photos from Wayne Johnson. I also picked up the 1950 Bowman Williams from Kevin Savage (a little more than I wanted to spend, but that completed that set), and my last purchase of the show was a 1971 Milk Dud's Santo, to complete that set. In another unusual move, I did another swap with Paul Korbst. An 800 count box of 1970-1980 OPC BB commons, no hi #s, for a complete set of 1966 Fleer Don Drysdale Puzzle, that I, Steve and Mark Talbot have been working on. Other big show pick-ups were 7 1950 Topps FB, a 1935 National Chicle FB formy once a year set (my goal is to get 1 a year.) Bought a set of 1974 BobParker 2nd Best from Kurt Tourdot. A 1951 Topps Connie Mack All Star, a large amount of 1920s and 1930s English sports cards, and a 1933 Delong. I think I got hits to 26 different prewar BB sets. I highly recommend that if you can make it to a National, to do so. Something you will remember. OBC friendly dealer Mike Sandles is always the highlight, and frequently there is another deal or 2 that I can find. This past Sunday was another show, but I was the only OBCer that made it this time. Mike Sandles gave me approximately 2500 cards to pass along to OBC. About 600 were vintage, and I am goingto add a 1996 UD Olympic set to my UV list, as it was only 2 cards short (if there are only 135 in the set. Anyone know? I am still sorting the cards to offer up or to hit lists. Most vintage are from the 70s, but some are late 50s (58 Slaughter). I saw a few HOFers (60 T Banks AS hi#) and highnumbers (62 T #581). Of course many are Tipton mint. Cards cover all 4 sports. I did not just accept gifts from Mike, as I purchased a small lot of 1970 Superballs and my first 1968 Official Major League BB Player Marbles. Otherhits from Mike included a 1963 Bazzoka ATG, a handful of 1930s matchbook covers and 5 1936 S & S cards (I previously only had a type card). Big find at the show was a scp 1953 Glendale in Tipton mint. Challenged bygetting a 1964 Venezuelan Kaline. I am/was within 2 of my 1978 Burger King Yankees set, but found a complete set so cheap, I amnow 2 cardas shy of adupes For only being there for 3 hours, it was pretty successful. Next show is Sunday, September 18 followed by October 9. Hope to see some folks there next time. My old stompin grounds got stomped.
It's all over the news which is about the only way Rutland gets on TV.
There are a hundred thousand 80s and 90s sportscards (not worth much anyway) floating down the street from the 5ft flood in my mom's basement.
She's out a washer/dryer/furnace/ stored possessions which is way worse than me losing my Black Sabbath Lp's and my Gregg Jeffries rookie cards...
Roads, streets and bridges washed out all over Vermont. I think the injuries are minimal due to some evacuations in time to save people. Nothing could save their stuff...
You just never know what might happen in this world...

Further north, even as little as 25 miles inBrattleboro VT, things were worse, and apparently VT has had a lot more problems, mostly flooding, which continues through today.
