Hello all - and happy 4th of July! I have a question for the SF Giants fans / Baseball Stadium buffs. I have searched the web for several hours and have come up with only sketchy information. I have found that Candlestick was remodeled in 1985 and that, among other things, Luxury Boxes were added. Does anyone know: In 1984 what kind of seating was available for the Giants Owners / Executives and Visiting VIP's? Was there a special box beside the Press Box behind home plate? Did Candlestick have a "Club" level like Dodger Stadium has with limited seating (about 5 - 8 rows)? If there was a place for VIP's to sit - was it inside or outside? Was it a lounge or just seats nailed to the ground? Actually - anything you can share would help me. My writing is taking me from the 1934 All Star Game to the 1984 All Star Game -- and I would like to have some realistic details about the stadium. I end up spending as much time talking to him at shows as I do actually looking through his cards. Mark asked me to pass alng he'll be at the National in booths 807P & 906P. I remember he's been at past Nationals; I know too that there was a time when a bunch of us were clustered around his tables (I think it was the last Cleveland National.) I picked up a bunch of 73 Kellogg's that year :-) He doesn't have website; he does sell on consignment on eBay through Fred Borelli aka 71Toppsman. If a couple of other of our group members have anything nice to say about Mark, I'd like to nominate him to be added to our recommended dealers page. If he's at my local show next week, I'll remember to snap a picture. ================= Date: Fri, 8 Jul 2011 07:56:41 -0400 (EDT) To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: alvinautry@aol.com Subject: Re: OBC-Friendly dealer /recommended dealer candidate I have purchased cards from him off ebay and always been pleased with the ================= To: Date: Fri, 8 Jul 2011 18:33:12 -0400 From: richard dingman Subject: ebay seller warning - murphillac500 I recently won in an ebay auction a vintage card from this gentleman, and was surprised to receive it in a plain envelope with no protection at all other than a very flimsy plastic "penny" sleeve. Naturally the card was bentand creased far beyond its photo in the auction page. I contacted him and he said that was the way he always sent his cards. I then looked at his seller history and found that several folks had complained of his poor packaging. So I complained to ebay, but meanwhile I had to send the card back to be within the 10 day return policy. I figured it would be a total loss, but, apparently due to my complaint, he refunded my purchase price (not the shipping). So now I figured I was just out mailing both ways. Then a couple weeks later the card is returned to me "package unclaimed". I conclude that the seller is so flighty that he skipped town, suggesting this is possibly a recurring issue for which he has built up enough trouble to BEWARE. ... and check seller feedback. Baseball has "changed his life" according to Tony, everything he does is baseball. We he mentioned hewanted to visit some ballparks this year, and wanted to see some old ones...unfortunately there are only 2 "old" ones left I explained to Tony. He told me he didn't care and still wanted to go on a road trip this summer. Well Last Wednesday July 6th I surprised my son and got tickets to a RedSox game at fenway. When I told him we were going to Boston, he was so EXCITED. Flash forward to arrival. We walked around the ballpark and tony said " dad I cant believe this is a baseball park, this looks like old buildings from out here" (the Yawkey way view). Tony had so much fun at the street fair outside the park. We went to the sox team store and bought Tony a sox hat, and to OBC standards we choose on his own the sox hat with the 50s logo on it...how cool is that? Then we went back out and tony played catch with the sox guy on stilts. FUN FUN time out there. Now i felt it was time to enter the park and Tony agreed. As Tony entered the park I snapped some pictures to capture his first time in an original park. As he got in youcould just see it in his eyes how AMAZED he was at the nostalgic feel. We walked around inside for a 1/2 hour to build up the anticipation for him ashe was dying to see the GREEN MONSTER. When we finally walked into the seating area his jaw just dropped as he took a look at the field and mind you he had not looked at the Green Monster yet. He was just soaking in the feelof this stadium and then he looked into left field and saw it. He said " Dad look that's the Green Monster...that's 38 ft tall" we took a bunch of pictures of Tony in front of the monster and he told me how awesome that old scoreboard in the monster was. I said to him "want to try and go to the top of the Green Monster?" Tony said YES. we worked our way to the upper section of fenway and were greeted by 2 ushers who said you cant come up here unless you have tickets. He said after the game you can come up I explained to him that we were from NY and were driving home after the game and thatwe would have no time to come up after the game. Then he said "NY huh....mets or yankees?" I said "Mets" he said ok go ahead up and take some pictures. OK now its time to watch the game and Tony asked to buy a program to keep score. Now we NEVER kept score but i was in on that, wow my son wanted to keep score with me....OK the sox were down 1-0 after the first when Jacoby Ellsburry Led off for the Sox with a home Run Tony was excited to see a HR. well in the 2nd inning Kevin Youklis hit a Home Run over the Green Monster, which made TONYS night...he was so excited to see that homer. He didnt stop talking about it. Oh by the way we had a pillar in our way semi blockingour view of the plate which caused Tony and myself to sit in the edge of our seats to see the plate, and I explained to Tony that that was part of the charm of the park and he agreed. During the 8th inning the rain came down, we went for shelter and by time we got to shelter it stopped and we enjoyed a 6-4 Redsox win over the BlueJays. after the game Tony couldn't stop talking about how this was the best time ever at a ball game. Hello All, I have been almost invisible in the trading card world for the last year or so and there is a reason. At the end of June after 12 years serving as the Assistant Principal at Huron Academy I was promoted to School Principal. The promotion came at a cost as I have literally been doing the job of two administrators over the past year and ahalf but I see it as the price that needed to paid to get the job, hence my lack of activity within the group. I am busy hiring an Assistant and getting some things in order for the new school year as well as taking a little time off. For those of you who know me well, you know that I am dedicated to the work we do at Huron and I am very excited about where myleadership will take us. One place it will not take me is to the National this year. The management company I now work for has scheduled a leadership conference for the first week of August AND "she who must be obeyed" has scheduled our daughter Kendall's Graduation Party for August 6th so I won't even be able to catch a quick "red eye" flight into Chi-town for a day or twoof action. This is the second year in a row that I have missed the "really big show" and with Glenn coming in from Scotland I am even more disappointed. Still, getting our daughter ready for the next big adventure (college) in her life has been exciting, funand a bit bittersweet. She will be going to Wayne State University here in Detroit but has decided to live on campus with a High School friend and Mom & Dad will be saving our pennies to help her out as much as we can. To say the leastalthough I will be missing all the fun in Chicago we will be very busy here as well, and it's also a good thing. Since my baseball lists are getting pretty hard to hit, I went for hockey & football & here's what I got: 10 70/71 OPC hockey. These are the first ones to that set I've had; findingTopps hockey cards in Dayton OH is hard enough, but finding OPC is next toimpossible. So, I'm torn - do I keep 'em or send them along? If you collect that set & need some, let me know. If not - this is one big (relatively) set that I have no hope of ever finishing, but they are kind of neat. Maybeif I keep them I can learn French. Several FB cards: 5 '65 Philadelphias (the first hits to that newly-started set); My first '64 Topps. That makes it a type-card. One more & I'm collecting the set, per the Mike Rich Rule; My first '63 Topps. Another type card. 3 '60 Fleer. According to the Rich Rule, I'm now collecting that one too; My first '60 Topps; 7 '58 Topps - doubling my set total in one gell swoop; My 2nd '58 Topps. Now officially collecting that one too. And finally a '56. My have list goes from 2 to 3. So that's 5 sets that went from nothing to something, plus 2 more that wentfrom type-card to collecting. The biggie today, though, was knocking off one of the last 2 '75 minis I needed - George Brett. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel - it's the headlight of an oncoming #500 Ryan Express, which if & when it arrives will kill the set I started getting serious about at the National in Cleveland a few years ago. Next weekend it's the big show held by JD Heckathorn in Columbus. I'm stillhoping to make it to Chi-town, but I need to convince the better half to go - or to go all by myself. ================= To: Date: Sun, 17 Jul 2011 20:11:23 -0500 From: "Mark Zentkovich" Subject: topps 1968 football ramble.. If not, I=E2=99d highly recommend it. It=E2=99s an autobiography about a kid growing up in a bit of a fractured family, worshipping his brother and the Red Sox. Every short chapter in his life is framed by a baseball card from 1975 to 1981, since that was his passion growing up.Phases of his life are paralleled by the choice of cards, which gives guyslike us an instant connection the book. I=E2=99ve got a few pages to go, but after a few beers and a lot of reading, I got to a chapter that had a 1975 Carmen Fanzone card (1975, #373). It made me laugh, but since I=E2=99m stranded in Waco, TX at the moment, I didn=E2=99t have anybody to laugh with. So I=E2=99ll laugh through email! The fact that this card even showed up in the book is hysterical to me, as it=E2=99s always been a bit of a question mark in my mind, along with the Billy Grabarkowitz (I=E2=99m sure that=E2=99s misspelled) from that set. You see, by 1975 I was a Cubs guru, or so I thought. I had a dresser drawer full of cards from 1974 and1975, and even a few 1973s that I had traded for since I was too young then to collect them. But certainly by 1975, I knew everything about theCubs from religiously watching WGN every day. As the season progressed, I would buy packs at Woolworths and watch my heroes. The best thing about those days is that you knew your heroes, since they never changed teams. I knew I would always have Steve Swisherbehind the plate, with George Mitterwald getting an occasional start. I knew Thornton was at first, Trillo at second, Kelleher/Rosello at SS,and Madlock at 3rd. And what an outfield =E2=93 Cardenal, Morales, and Monday! Bonham, Stone, Reuschel, and Burris on the hill=E2=A6it was like watching my kids play today =E2=93 I knew them all. And you could identify with the other teams =E2=93 when the Pirates cameto town, you knew Al Oliver was going to go 3-4. When the Phillies came, Ray Burris could walk Schmidt so that Luzinski could hit a 2-run bomb. The Dodgers were always going to beat you , no matter what, since they had an infield that could actually hit. As for the Reds, you just watched in awe=E2=A6 But occasionally the Astros would come to town, and if JR Richard wasn=E2=99t pitching, the Cubs could look pretty good. Or the maybe the Padres, with an over-the-hill Nate Colbert, transitioning to a young Dave Winfield gave you a good shot at a win if Randy Jones had the day off. You might even get a sweep of the Giants if Willy Montanez or Garry Maddox didn=E2=99t get a lucky hit or two. So that brings me back to Carman Fanzone. I haven=E2=99t Goggled his stats, nor do I want to, as it would ruin my perception of youth. I knew every Cub back then =E2=93 every number, every double-switch. So when those 1975 cards came out, there was some dude with the cheesiest moustache I ever saw wearing a Cubs uniform! Who was that guy? Carmen Fanzone?!? Are you kidding me? Don=E2=99t you think I would have noticed him? Billy Grabarkowitz? Did he ever sub for Trillo? Maybe=E2=A6I don=E2=99t want to know. I remember getting dupe after dupe that year, but couldn=E2=99t get that elusive Bill Madlock card. I had Fanzone, but not Madlock. You could hardly tape Fanzone to your wall in place of Madlock when you had no ideawho he was. It would have felt a bit dirty. Maybe I=E2=99ll Goggle it later. Maybe he was a Cub. Maybe Ididn=E2=99t watch as many games as I thought I did. Or maybe I have selective memory. I miss the days before Free Agency, even though it wasn=E2=99t fair to the players. Back then, it was like watching your kids=E2=99 Little League teams where you knew where everyone belonged. The cards would appear each year with the right guys in the right uniforms, as I always hoped for one of those little Topps trophies and All-Star plaques on a Cubs card. Instead, they always found their way to Reds and Dodgers. I didn=E2=99t know much about the American League back then, so maybe Fanzone came from =E2=9Cover there.=E2=9D I know we sent Andre Thornton =E2=9Cover there,=E2=9D but we got Billy Buck in return, so all was forgotten. Take care, By ALLEN BARRA Ring Around the BasesBy Ring Lardner (1992) To paraphrase Hemingway on "Huckleberry Finn," all baseball literature comes from one book by Ring Lardner, "You Know Me Al" (1916), the first-person account of the trials and tribulations of a shallow young bush-league braggart. Lardner's appeal extended far beyond readers of the sports pages:His fans even included Virginia Woolf, who said that Lardner "writes the best prose that has come our way, often in a language which is not English." Shewas right; it is pure American. In "Ring Around the Bases," the stories of "You Know Me Al" are reprinted along with some of Lardner's other great baseball writing, including such tales as "Alibi Ike," "My Roomy" and "Hurry Kane." Some of it deals with a motor-mouthed young outfielder named Casey Stengel=E2=94 who, before he re-emerged in 1949 as the manager of the Yankees, many thought Lardner had invented. As Matthew Bruccoli makes clear in his introduction, Lardner's brilliance as a fiction writer was due in large part to his keen journalist's ear: He did not so much create a new language as reveal one. View Full Image Casey Stengel in 1916 as a Brooklyn Dodgers player. Sometimes You See It ComingBy Kevin Baker (1993) Written before Kevin Baker's fame as a historical novelist, "Sometimes You See It Coming" combines the mythical power of Bernard Malamud's "The Natural" with a sense of humor. His protagonist, John Barr, is the star player a fictional version of the New York Mets. Barr is "tall and lean, hawk-faced and loose-footed, looking every inch the ideal, baggy-uniformed ball-player of the thirties." Barr may be the greatest player of all time, having seven batting titles. The story has more layers than a Nabokov novel, spanning a century of baseball legend, from the murder of Ty Cobb's father to Roberto Clemente's last plane ride. The Brothers KBy David James Duncan (1992) The major influences for David James Duncan's massive second novel are contained in the title: the "K" is an allusion both to Dostoyevsky's Karamazovs and to the way a strikeout is noted on a scorecard. The book is a crazy-quilt of Americana, the story of a former minor-league pitcher in themill of Camas, Wash., and his family of four boys and two girls. As the son who narrates the novel puts it: "The story of an eight-way tangle of human beings, only one-eighth of which was a pro ballplayer." "The Brothers K" islaced with religion, politics and family tribulations (from the Eisenhower era through the war in Vietnam), always using baseball as a reference point. Inthe chapter "Roger Maris, Radical of the Sixties," Duncan writes: "Our National Pastime seemed to possess an ability to cough up new rules, definitions or heroes before a crisis stripped it of all credibility and appeal." In this case, the crisis was of a statistical nature, undermining the integrity of baseball's bible, the record book, as Maris did the unimaginable and broke Babe Ruth's single-season record of 60 home runs and Commissioner Ford Frick threatened to apply an asterisk to Maris's entry. (Frick never followed through.) But in an era with a longer season (162 games, not the old 154 inRuth's day), more relief pitchers and other changes, the sport's numerical heart was under siege. Squeeze PlayBy Jane Leavy (1990) A.B. Berkowitz=E2=94the "A" is for Ariadne=E2=94writes for the mythical Tribune and covers the team that would been, had it existed in 1990, the third incarnation of the Washington Senators. Imagine her as a combination of Rosalind Russell's Hildy Parks in "His Girl Friday" and Susan Sarandon's Annie Savoy in "Bull Durham." Misfits and rejects, the players she writes about are men of few words=E2=94but, then, most of them know only a few. In interviews, she manages to coax quotes out of them like "There's no doubt about it, but you can never be sure" and "Baseballically, that was perfectionistic." Jane Leavy's ballplayers curse, fornicate, fight, drink, tell tasteless jokes and generally make Pete Rose seem like Cary Grant. But her affection for them is boundless. After all, "they are old before they are forty" and "washed up before they begin to be adults." The Universal Baseball Association, Inc., J. Henry Waugh, Prop.By Robert Coover (1968) Robert Coover's black comic novel tells the story of J. Henry Waugh, a frustrated accountant, who conjures up a life for himself centered on a baseball board game that he plays alone=E2=94fanatically. Waugh serves as commissioner and historian. He's the god of the UBA with just one wrinkle: He can't control the roll of the dice. Waugh does invent "death rolls" for his players: "The shock of their deaths often dismayed him, though later he usually enjoyed the writing of their obituaries. He dreaded, in short, the death blow, yet it was just this rounding off in the Book of each career that gave beauty to all these lives." =E2=94Mr. Barra writes about sports for the Journal. ================= Date: Sat, 23 Jul 2011 16:42:16 -0000 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: "nickcov" Subject: 1974-76 Wonder Bread Fb available Hi Everyone I have a bunch of 1974-76 Wonder Bread FB cards condition is all over the place from poor all the way up to Ex range. Maybe scrambling? Anyway, I am 90% certain I'll be going from AL to Chicago for the National. I haven't decided what day to leave here. I thought about going to Detroit beforehand but its further out the way than I expected. FOOT might be able to pursuade me but for now the plan is to go to Chicago directly. Looking at a map, I will pass through Nashville, Bowling Green, Louisville, Indianapolis, and Gary before making it into Chicago. Is there anyone who'd like a visit and/or overnight guest as I head north? I haven't looked at the Directory to target a specific person. One of my OBC bucket list projects is the creation of a map with pins showing where every OBCer lives. Wow - an OBC bucket list. That's a cool idea for another post. My list wouldn't be primarily about acquiring cards. It would be about OBC and OBCers. I'd put meeting everyone, going to different parks, going to a SABR convention, the Toronto show, and similar things. It would be neat to see what bucket lists from other OBCers look like. Anyway, in previous years Ive offered to track down cards for people at the National. I did that last year but still have not sent out some of things I found. Ya - ridiculous and impossible to imagine But ask Brock and Friar how they feel about me not keeping my word. I'd ask but I wouldn't expect them to be talking to me at this point. Hahaha. Because of my poor track record, I'm hesitant about making promises that I cannot keep. I'll offer to look at lists but I don't know how much I can deliver this year. That's enough from me for now. Someday I'll rant about everything else going on in my life. Generally its been a rocky year. I am still married and working. There's little job satisfaction and uncertainly about the future. Her daughter (the phrase "my stepdaughter" is repugnant at times) is a constant source of stress/anger/resentment for me, straining my relationship with my wife. Even apart from that, my wife and I have learned that we need to spend a lot more time on learning how to communicate with each other. We aren't heading towards divorce but possibly that tolerable but unhappy middle-ground between a fulfilling marriage and a divorce. Things are great when we have no problems but terrible when we do. The best parts of my year have been, no surprise, OBC-related. Rob Gioia called me out of the blue once. Mike Rich calls me occasionally. And I chat with Andy Cook as he tries to help me get started with investment/retirement planning. I received a big stack of Exhibits from George V and several cards from others. Kent Goto and his wife stopped here on their way back from their daughter's wedding. I got to meet John Storman and see Brock and Geno in Pensacola Florida. On the downside, I haven't been to a show. I haven't picked up many cards this year. I made a big effort to send out basketball and hockey cards this spring but that's been about it. Interaction with OBCers is the biggest thing I've missed since I moved from MD to AL. A wonderful thing about OBC is that it will be there when I have time to get back to it. I'm blown away when I think that I've been in the group since the late 90s. Some people say a lot has changed (for the worse) since then but I haven't seen it. OBC is a community. People can be heavily involved with the whole group or with just a few people or not at all and still be part of OBC. Is there any other group (cards or otherwise) where you'd open your house to a guy you never met (but perhaps emailed a few times) ? Along with my wife and a couple of friends, OBC is truly one of the blessings in my life. ================= Date: Sat, 23 Jul 2011 12:40:16 -0700 (PDT) To: Steve Rittenberg , OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: "trufan999@aol.com" Subject: RE: [OBC-Ramblings] National planning (and some rambling) - Steve ================= Date: Sat, 23 Jul 2011 22:43:25 -0000 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: "Tom Housley" Subject: Columbus OH show As a (hopefully) warm-up for the National - I still have to persuade the wifey to come with me, but then what does she do when I'm shopping?? - I wentto JD Heckathorn's show in Columbus today. I printed up some OBC "business"-type cards, with our website & philosophy,& gave some to JD, Wayne & Dick, & asked them to pass them out to anyone who looks like they may be OBC material. Hopefully that pays off & we got some nibbles & maybe increase membership. ================= Date: Sun, 24 Jul 2011 10:11:57 -0700 (PDT) To: OBC Ramblings From: Geno Wagner Subject: National shoppers Fellas -- Is anybody shopping for T205s at the National this year? I have been told I will have 2 dealer badges available when I arrive late Wednesday afternoon. It should be just in time for the preview. The plan is to do our usual 2 guys in, 1 guy out, 2 more back in, until everyone is in. Charge is $10 per day, to a max of $30. Excess proceeds used towards the swap food. Ron Perry is also attending the show Wednesday through Sunday. He has made our hotel reservations, so I have a room booked, but no idea where. I think he has us in 1 place Wednesday and Thursday and somewhere else Friday and/or Saturday. I did not realize the Cubs game was an afternoon affair (you would think I would know this with their history of day games), so if we have not bought tickets yet, count me out. I believe we only have a few National newbies. Please add Mike Mackie from VCT to Saturday. Most of us met him at last year's National. A few folks have asked for National tips. OBC dealers get to be OBC dealers because they have the type of cards we like at fair/execellent prices. Always a good idea to check them out early and often. That said, I highly recommend, that if you will be there for more than 1 day,and have a limited expense account (do any of us have unlimited amount we can spend???) to browse more than shop the first day. You will see so much that you want, and you cannot get it all. Until you have looked at a few tables and drooled over things you want, you should not make any purchases, or you will be out of money before you get out of the first row of tables. I am not suggesting go through the whole show without buying, as it usually takes me at least 3 full days to make it through most of the show, a single time. Just mark down the things that interest you the most, with the table number and pricing. You may go back for it, or find it 30% cheaper in the 2nd aisle. Cell phones with the National roster coded in so you can call all the other guys. First that helps get you in the show, with our dealer badges. Second, you may see stuff, others will be in and call us over for a group attack. Between going in together on lots or quantity purchases, can get us even better discounts from dealers. If you are going to be therre for a days, try and ration your money, so you do not run out too early in the show. Usually the highlight of the show is the Saturday nite swap. Bring the dupes you wish to share. OBC hat, t-shirt, etc., are also recommended for photos and for dealer recognition for discounts and for other OBCers to spot you. Looking forward to seeing you there. Not all are "OBC approved" but are still worth walking by. If anyone spots dealers on the big list that you recommend but I did not highlight, please let us all know. I have a bag of 50 commons, all in OBC shape. If I look for them at the National, should I try to get a group lot at 25 cents each? 50 cents? The SCD says $1.75 for VG but that seems pretty high to me. If I get time, I'll try to get them organized. I think this might be my first "OBC only" set if they will cost me $1 for a beat up Claude Osteen coin. I also need some coin pages. I think Mike Rich helped me with those in the past so hopefully I can find them at the National. He has a group lot of mainly 1951 bowman BB, plus some 1951 Topps redbacks and1950 Bowman BB, highlights are the 1951 bowman Williams, Berra and Ford rookie. He said book is over $7000 and these are in p - g (tape stains, etc.) and he is looking for $675 for the lot. I have not seen these, so have no idea if this is a good deal, but some guys may want to look into it and split the lot. Danny is usually fair, but not spectacular deals.
