This week, I'll be producing my 9th annual Children's Miracle Network Hospitals telethon (the local segments for WHIO-TV in Dayton). As the producer, I get to put everything together -including going out & taping patient stories throughout the year & then editing everything together. The month of May is traditionally spent with me tied to my editing system, rushing to get everything done. Well, it's almost exactly 72 hours until we go live, and I'm about 99% finished (whew.) So, I invite y'all to watch some of the pieces I've done this year (and previous years) on my YouTube page. My YouTube user name is CMNDayton. Here's a link to one of this year's stories: http://www.youtube.com/watch?vIL_hgOih8Ts You can then get to all of my videos easily. We did a few fun things this year too, so be sure to check out the Speedway Golf Tournament piece, and the Overly Dramatic Ambassador Theatre skits I wrote (and added my vioce to.). Comments on the videos on YouTube are always welcomed. Just one more thing. I know money is tight, and we all have our favorite charities. I'm going to get on & off of this soapbox quickly, so please bear with me: please consider making a donation to your local Children's Hospital. Every penny you donate stays at your community hospital, to help pay forcritically needed euipment to help sick & injured kids get better. None ofit goes to administrative costs. Even if there's no telethon in your TV market, your local Children's Hospital will gladly accept your donation, no matter the amount. Or if you really want to help a fellow OBC'er out & you don't have a local hospital - last year Dayton Children's Medical Center (ww.childrensdayton.org) managed to raise just over 2 MILLION dollars, for thefirst time ever - and your favorite OBC telethon producer would love to see us top 2 mill again this year :-) OK, I'm done for now - if I've offended anyone by making a not-so-subtle plea for donations - then I truly apologize. Wish me well this weekend - and here's hoping everyone finds a '52 Mantle at a local garage sale this summer. ================= Date: Thu, 2 Jun 2011 14:41:03 -0400 (EDT) To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: alvinautry@aol.com Subject: Re: T-206 I have a T-206 question. First off, I want to announce the completion of my first set in quite some time - pending official examination for Gremlins, my 1973 set is done. Today's mail brought the last two - one from Sportlots and the other from the Bay. Well, it's done as long as the Scottish delegate says it is. Thank you to all the kind and generous members who have contributed to it (and other sets) over the years. I'm awed by all the fantastic cardboard that has poured into my mailbox over the last (almost) 15 years, and more than that I'm humbled by the generosity of those of you that have been kind enough to think of me. From my heart: thank you so much. Now a short ramble: after 16 years, Barb and I sold our house early last month and are somewhat homeless as we look for the right house for our needs. Having an acre of land was very nice (lots of space, neighbors not right on top of you, big back yard for the dogs & kids, my own basketball court area), but the downside was all the maintenance on the place and the huge electric bills (we were on a well - pumping water to a landscaped acre is NOT cheap!). The good news is that we moved out on our terms. We happen to live in one of the heaviest hit areas of the economic and housing downturn - over 60% of the homeowners in our county are under water. We didn't do everything right, but one thing we did do right was to not take money out against our equity so we could buy "things". I'm very grateful for that now - we walked away with a pretty decent check that we can use for a substantial down payment on the next abode. In the meantime we're staying with family, which is nice on the payables but not so much when it comes to having "our" space. We're trying to be patient, but sometimes we get a little stir crazy and get the urge to just buy the next "decent" house just to end the process. Right now we've got offers in on two different houses, so we'll see. Now that the kids are grown up and moved out, I'm just wanting a little house with an extra room that I can use as my cardboard mancave. Like I mentioned earlier, my kids are grown. Being an empty nester isn't as much fun as I thought it would be, but I'm adjusting. My son is 23 and wants to join the Air Force. While he waits to see how that will turn out, we enjoy playing softball together. I miss my daughter an awful lot - even though she only lives a few miles away, we just don't hang out like we used to. We've always been very close, so that's been a tough adjustment. I also started a new job. I spent 15 years in the retail furniture business, but I felt it was time to move on. Right now I'm working in the promotional/advertising business - basically we provide/offer all the products that businesses give away to their clients to advertise themselves. We specialize in custom designed hats (thehatsource.com), but do everything else, too. Guess that's it for now. I'm yearning for my life to settle down enough so that I can get somewhat active again. On Tuesday night, I was able to attend a game at Miller Park with my wife, sister, brother in law, and nephew. My brother in law has a buddy who is pitching for the Mets this year. Tim Byrdak, a left handed reliever. We were part of 14 guests that Tim got tickets for at the game. For myself, I was happy to be seated next to the Jose Reyes posse. They were very entertaining. As for the game, although Tim did not enter, the Mets held on for a 2-1 vic. After the game, we waited in the family clubhouse as Tim showered and changed. Then, he took us onto the field. Wow! What an unbelievable experience. The park itself seems so much bigger from the field than from the stands. A couple of highlights while we were on thefield - My brother in law and I playing catch in RF - trying to save potential home runs. Also, playing catch in the visitors bullpen. Another highlight was watching Tim's 5 year old son run through the sprinklers in the OF. Priceless. Anyway, I'm trying to attach a photo ofTraci and myself on the field. Chicago is! Well kids, it's that time of year again where we grown men get together to play with (in the words of another OBCer) pictures of men. I'm starting to put together the list of who's coming, where they are staying, cell numbers, etc. Here is an example of last year's roster so you can see the info I will need. Cell phones are just about a MUST! You will have 15 guys looking for that one card you need and we'll tell you where to pickit up (unless we already bought it for you!) First thing... thanks go out to Bob Saxton who sent out a WAY cool Life Magarticle of the Bums from Brooklyn. Awesome pics! I hope the person who's Life Mag you cut up wasn't too mad LOL... I also relooked at my Japanese cards from Rob Fitts...Man those are so cool, so I guess rethanks works! For those who have never gone to a National, it's something you will remember for the rest of your life--sometimes good, sometimes bad . Ok, I was pouring over old emails and I can't help it if I always find a cutie to geta picture with, even on the subway! Glenn don't worry, I only go after single gals! The good here was the gal..the bad was how I embarrassed everyoneelse on the train! If nothing else, I guarantee a great time with great friends. Amazing how some I have never met in person and you see them and it's like we lived down the block from each other! We'll be needing a place for our Sat swap session, so when you guys get into your hotels, look to see if they have a roomor an area we can hold it. No telling how much damage Morganti had to pay for last year when we held it in his room lol...I'm trying to book my hotel, but can't seem to get where I want at the price I want. I'll make sure I have it done tomorrow. Also playing the airline game to see where gas prices lead air fares. So far $293 is the best I've gotten... So there you have it... She agreed that if we go this July during the National she could survive just fine for a day without me so I could check out the show (wonder who will spend more --- her shopping in Chicago alone or me at the National?). So my question is, if I had just one day to hit up the National, which one should I pick? I don't think you'll have a problem walking up and buying tickets together although the seats will be on the outskirts. There's always something going on in downtown Chicago and I hope the gang will want to have some outing downtown. I can provide any comments regarding choices. In general there are places tourists seem to want to hit that locals would avoid and vice versa. Remember my plug for promoting new memberships. Dealers are hereby warned that reading any further is likely to cause stomach pains. Mint (MT): The front of a Mint baseball card will include most of the original paper. Normal "in the shirt pocket" creases are allowed, as are thumb tack and staple holes. You should also be able to read most on the back of the card. The only writing allowed on a Mint baseball card is scratching offthe old team name and inking in the new team. I have received numerous e-mails asking about "gloss" and "centering". Since I do not know what these are I cannot comment on it. Any Mickey Mantle card grades Mint. Early 1900 tobacco cards can never grade lower than Mint. Near Mint (NM): A Near Mint baseball card will at first appear to be perfect, but upon closer inspection some minor flaws may be discovered. For example, your favorite Milwaukee Braves pitcher is Joe Jay, but you can never pull a Joe Jay from a pack. You have seven cards of Braves pitcher Don McMahon, so you carefully cross out Don McMahons name and replace it with Joe Jay. It goes without saying in this example you would also have to thicken up Don McMahons eyebrows a little too. When examined closely, staple holes mayactually be nail holes which would downgrade a Mint card to NM. Excellent (EX): An excellent condition baseball card should have at least three corners. Hole punched cards and cards with BB holes will normally not grade above EX. Any kind of writing is allowed on cards in excellent condition. Added nasal hair, arrows through the players head, black eyes, and blacked out teeth are certainly allowed. I have a 1958 Topps #5 Willie Mays with a penciled in goatee, blacked out teeth, and a large chip out of Williesleft nostril. When the dealer told me he would take five dollars for the card I replied "Excellent Dealer Dude!" Bicycle spoke creases are allowed onEX cards, and any stain from any source are allowed on EX condition cards. To read my award winning dissertation entitled "Baseball Cards and Stains Accomplished By Ten Year Olds" click (http://www.tenyearold.stain/ballcards.htm). ANY BROOKLYN DODGER CARD CAN NEVER GRADE BELOW EXCELLENT! Very Good (VG): If less than 10% of the card has been burned up, this wouldclassify as a VG card. Cards that have been cut in two and taped back together normally grade VG. EXCEPTION: 1941 Double Play Cards that have been cut in two. If both sides have been taped, stapled, or glued back together, these normally grade NM. If only half of the card remains, it grades VG. Remember your least favorite card when you were a kid? Somebody like Frank Zupo? You take your Frank Zupo card and lay it down face first in the street and then get on your bike and get going real fast. Just before your rear tire runs over your Frank Zupo, hit the brakes! You could drag that Frank Zupocard ten feet if you timed it right! Mouse damaged cards normally grade VG, however, cat damaged cards (if you know what I mean) normally grade a lotlower than VG. Good (G): Good condition cards can be bent, cut, hole punched, taped, stapled, wrote on, eraser damaged, torn, ripped, scuffed, stained, creased, chipped, chewed, and glued. VG cards could have been used for target practice, dunked in the toilet, set on fire and dropped from your upstairs bedroom, used to mix model airplane paint, and definitely thrown at your sister. No matter WHAT a card looks like, if you need it for your collection, it looks GOOD to you! To start, I am coaching my son this year in his little league travel team. Funds are very tight this year, as this is an extended season no local business want to donate $$ as they already donated for the regular season. We (the parents ) have to pay for everything. As the coach I brought it upon myself to try and get help with the costs. I sent out several letters to MLB clubs and a few minor league clubs, 2 weeks had gone by and I hadn't heard anything... until today. I was walking out of my house and FED-EX arrived at my house with a big box, I opened the box to find 15 hats for my team. The team that sent them was the Single A Charleston RiverDogs. The Class A affiliate of the NY Yankees. 15 hats how great and generous is that? When I called to thank them They asked me if it was enough. The person who i wrote the letter to, sent the hats, and whom icalled was a sweet woman named Kristal Lessington who had me on the phonefor an hour. During the conversation she told me she was actually coming up to NY in July and I quickly invited her out to see the Boys play in the team hats. I also invited her to dinner in NYC which she quickly replied DONE DEAL...lol. Then I told her that our name would be The Cortlandt RiverDogs. Its actually appropriate since we play along the Hudson River. After ourconversation Kristal told me to expect some "extra stuff" in the mail. Now I know these hats cost the RiverDogs very little as she told me they were promotional hats, but to me and the team they were worth SO much as we really appreciate them. Actually it save the team $300 as the hat the uniform guy makes were $20 per. Guru Grading by Larry "Guru" Tipton In an effort to standardize OBC grading procedures, I have been asked to post my Condition Guide. To read my award winning dissertation entitled "Baseball Cards and Stains Accomplished By Ten Year Olds" click (http://www.tenyearold.stain/ballcards.htm). ; ANY BROOKLYN DODGER CARD CAN NEVER GRADE BELOW EXCELLENT! They haven't, and realistically won't from here on. On July 1, Kim and I and our four kids are moving to Nicaragua for two years. I'm going to be a missionary there, Kim is going to teach 1st grade at an international school where all our kids will attend, and we will learn Spanish and move into a neighborhood. I've made 8 trips to Nicaragua and over these past five years, the people there have stolen my heart. I will miss being an active part of OBC. I'm not planning on going inactive, but you won't see many cards coming from me, either. Nicaragua probablyisn't the best place to take care of my collection, and the weight would be prohibitive, unless I want to arrive without clothes or toiletries. I still enjoy reading the thanks and ramblings, even though I haven't been mixing it up with you for these past few months. I owe several of you an apology for not having the courtesy to post thanks for the cards you sent. I am still determined to post tardy thanks before we leave. We've had some hiccoughs in this process, the worst of which has been having several differentparties express their commitment to leasing our home and then backing out.Yeah, that's been a pain. I'm still trusting it will all come together, and we do have some folks who have filled out an application and look like good potential renters. If you want to hear more about what we'll be doing, please ask. I don't want to use Ramblings inappropriately. We're a little nervous (sometimes downright scared) about the transition, but overall we're excited. I'm sayinga lot of goodbyes and plugging through a lot of to-do lists here. Blessings on all of you. Thanks for being a great community and for welcoming me in. Many of you have really brightened my life and encouraged me inthese past three years or so. About a year ago, I had anticipated that I might make my first National in Chicago and meet a bunch of you. Just goesto show we don't really know what's around the corner. Please be in touch, friends. I'm sure a kind word will help a lot in thesenext weeks and months. The very lowest ranking teams (in world terms) need to play each other simply for the right to participate in the regional qualifying tournaments. Unfortunately, Scotland find themselves ranked in their lowest ever position at present due to a combination of poor recent results, an inability to qualify for the final stages of any major tourney since 1998, and an atrocious showing by our club teams in European competition. This all means that we are in the 4th pot when the draw for the qualifying groups comes round next month, which translates to a very tough qualifying situation for us. Itsa vicious circle. Our senior minister was out ofthe office, so I got bumped up to "pastor duty." I went and met Bill and Jackie Gaetti, and some of her sisters. Mrs. Gaetti's mother was the one who had just died. Tried to console them a little, prayed with them and went on my way. I had known that Gary was born and raised in Centralia Illinois - where I have lived for a little over a year, and had in fact met his father once before. He had introduced himself to me... "Hey there, young man. Name's Bill, Bill Gaetti. You might know my son." Anyway, today was the visitation and funeral. I did my best to not act like a "fan" because, for goodness sake, this is Gary's grandma's funeral! But there he was, plain as day, the former Twins star... I didn't introduce myself, just sat and thought... what a unique circumstance for a fan of thegame like me. After the funeral was the dinner. They all came back to the church where Iwork, and fellowshipped over a potluck we provided for the family. I tried to go do some work, but sheesh, there's a 20-year major league vet in thebuilding! As always, the ladies working the dinner invited the staff to eat with them once the family had been through. I let them know how cool I thought it was, but mostly to them that guy's "just Gary, who went to school with my niece, etc etc." He was kind of a local celebrity, but they all knew him growing up. So I take some dishes back into the kitchen and Gary comes in to get some coffee. Our janitor, who is a rabid Cardinals fan, is in there too, and I said "Hey Joe, this guy helped the Twins beat the Cardinals in the 87 World Series! What do you think of that?" And Gary kinda chuckles, then shows me the World Series ring... wow that thing is huuuge. We end up talking fora bit. He's a pretty down to earth guy. We talked baseball for a while, and a thought occurred to me... so I said... "Hey, I love to talk baseball, but really, I'm sorry for your loss." I hope that relayed the message to him that we really do care about him and his family, not just his celebritystatus. No pictures, no autographs, just people. And Gary's one of the coolest people I've ever met. ================= Date: Tue, 28 Jun 2011 00:17:39 -0000 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: "John" Subject: off topic--wonder if any of you guys collects stamps (postage) my dad is an avid stamp collector and when I was down visiting him it made his day when I would sit out with him while he was sorting and this and that, now he has sent me an envelope of stamps and I have started sorting them....so now I am in need of information my dad swears by the mystic stamp company, this is the little guide book I am going by. The '73's (either variation) are much harder to find than '74's. Same deal for the football team checklists for '73 & '74 - team checklists, not the series checklists EXCEPT for this: I've discovered: on the 1973 Topps Football series checklists (the ones with cards 1-132, etc) that the series one checklist (card #68) has a one and two asterisk variation. I have both of them. However, I haven't been able to discover variations for the other series checklists. I haven't checked to see if there are any asterisk variations on the baseball team photo cards, but I suspect not. As for the regular series checklist, I checked my 74 set. The first three series checklists have one asterisk and the rest have 2 asterisks. I do not have any dupes handy so I cannot verify if there are variations..but looks like a possibility or perhaps that is the way they are supposed to be?? ================= To: Date: Thu, 30 Jun 2011 19:16:53 -0400 From: richard dingman Subject: RE: [OBC-Ramblings] Re: 1974 topps checklists Richard D To: obc-ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: illini_grad_90@yahoo.com Date: Thu, 30 Jun 2011 16:14:27 -0700 Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] Re: 1974 topps checklists I'm not sure about the asterisks, but mine all seem to have a green tint tothem... Sorry about that! The other night I was going through my '74 box to make sure Willie McCovey's Washington variation was indeed the last card to finish it off. A little back history - I told myself this thing was done several years back, but Glenn had to stick his two pennies in and inform me that my set wasn't complete without the Wash N'Lea variations. On to the present - I get to #599, and I've got two like I'm supposed to, or so I thought. Seems that I've got two Washingtons, but no San Diego. My set isn't done... again. So - I'm in need of a #599 Freiselben, San Diego - either the large or small print will do. If someone has either (or both), drop me a note and we canwork something out. ----- Original Message ----- From: ChicoD1@aol.com To: directorth@aol.com, OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com Sent: Thursday, June 30, 2011 8:51:06 PM Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] Re: 1974 topps checklists LMAO... are those terms now going into the OBC dictionary?
