We developed a very personal relationship over the years and I finally wanted him and his wife Carol to meet the family. Arrived early before the show was open and while waiting received a call from Randy Welk and arranged to meet a little later. Met Eddie and he had something for me which will find homes in OBC landI hope. As well as a great addition to my own golfer collection in a graded Johnny Miller card. Randy showed up a short time later and asalways it was like meeting an old friend that we just had not seen for awhile. We chatted about our lives, families and some card stories etc, wonderful!. Randy presented me with a group of 4 Hank Aaron pins that are just beautiful, made by Strike Zone and commemorating/highlighting some of his major career accomplishments. Thanks a heap Randy these are most welcome additions. I introduced my family to Randy and Eddie and Carol (who came from home just to meet them) and we all chatted for and hour or so. Randy and I toured the show but there wasn't anything remarkable. So John Stamper you didn't miss anything at the show but you did miss the cards I had for you, they will be sent in the mail. I could only stay for a little while as we had to make the drive 2 more hours north to Stockton to see friends we know from the Philippines who live there now. Randy hadoffered us his home to stay for the night but after meeting with the friends in Stockton we decided to return back home and drove all night arriving back very early this morning. After that haul, which the wife shared a little driving time, we all crashed for a few hours. But it was a supertrip and I enjoyed meeting Randy and Carol & Eddie and our friends in Stockton. As my lists get tougher and tougher, I wonder what, if anything, I will be able to find at a show. It seems every major show I find at least 1 lot I am happy with. I did not have that feeling heading into this show, as the US $ saw at only $.96 Caandian, so no built in advantage. I only made the show for Saturday and Sunday, although if I had not stopped and chatted with Carlos Alcazar and his sidekick Wes, for 1 1/2 hours on Saturday, I may have been able to get through the whole show on Saturday only. It was great catching up with Carlos again. I was informed by dealer Gary Nuchereno that I missed Gord Ellison Friday. One of my buys was from Gary, where in addition to getting 2 1949 Leaf FB, to get that list down to 1, I got another stack of 1950 Topps FB (before last month, I had only got about 5 of them in the last 8 years) ,getting me to within 30 of a base set. A hit from him to my Leaf Boxing and 1951 Topps Ringside Boxing got me within 4 of each of those. He then pulled out his Red Man wihtou tabs and sold the remaining ones to me cheap. Some were upgrades and a few hits to my master set. If any one does not carte about the offer date on back and is willing to swap Red mans, please let me know. I have lots to swap. Then Red Mans were among my best buys of the weekend. The buy I was most happy with, came from Larry Kerrigan, 2 groupings of T cards, 140 T-206 and 50 T-205, almost all were trimmed (no borders) for $5 a card. The key being I got my first Ty Cobb card (from when he was playing). While I do not plan on collecting more than abase set, I got 48 hits and 51 different backs to the T-206 set to get me below 200 to go. On the T-205's, 17 hits, 25 back differences, and that gets me over 1/2way done. If anyone has any T205 or T-206 to swap that are trashed, let me know. I had hoped to work on Canadian issues, such as Parkhurst and prewar hockey, WWg (Canadian Goudey) BB, etc. For a chnge, I actually did get some of those, including 16 hits to 1951-52 ParkhurstHockey to get that setover 1/2 way, a handful of hits to Ice Kings, getting me over 3/4 to a base set, a pair of 1935-6 OPC Hockey to go from 1 to 3 (another set now working on) some 1939-40 OPC hockey Photos to get oer 1/2 way there also. 4 more hits to 1934 WWG BB, down t 16, and enough hits to my 1933 Goudey set,I may change that to a want list (Bama challenges me to do this both in English and French). My last purchase of the show were some small strips andindividual cards from 1950 R-423. What a strange set, that I wonder if you can actually find these around guide price. I think these are underpriced, considering their scarcity. I just never see them to get them. I got hits to 29 sets, including 2 type cards (KDKA FB), 2 sets from 1 to working on them, 3 sets now over 1/2 way and 1 set down to 1. Mote hockey sets than BB (12 to 10), which is not surprising considering the venue and my want lists. Surprisingly decent show. I hope others will try and make it some day. Unfortunately for some, that level may not be enough for everyone in OBC or consistent over a long period of time. Everyone is encouraged to keep their list updated and it probably should be sent out as a reminder - maybe the one that prompts you to keep your address and other contact info up to date. I know it is a pain to pull cards for someone and send them only to find out they got them at a show or from someone else a long time ago. Keep in mind however, that you have the final say in who you send cards to - if they don't want to update their list, move on to the next one. To everyone else in the group: It's in your best interest to keep your list updated - I know (when I was more active) I was more likely to send cards to the people who were actively sending cards and thanking people for the ones they got. I know myself that I haven't updated my list since August of last year... however I usually don't bother to fix the date on the list for one card - which is all I think I've added to the collection in the last 9 months... in fact, that card is still sitting in the envelope. I still like to keep tabs of what's going on in the group, but until I have the extra time to devote to my hobby, I'm afraid the inbounds and outbounds are going to have to wait. With a two year-old and a two week-old, that day doesn't look to be any time soon either. Life gets in my way quite a bit now. TAYL, Ken M In a message dated 5/5/2011 9:58:32 P.M. From everything I've read about the guy - mainly from several OBCers who have had the pleasure of meeting him in person - he was a true gentleman and lover of the game. I saw Killebrew play several times at Tiger Stadium when I was a kid. That was back in those pre-1987 days before my current loathing of the Twins kicked in! Looking back, that Twins team from the late 60s/early 70s was pretty formidible, with guys like Oliva, Carew, Tovar and Killer all in the lineup. I remember Bob Allison and Harmon Killebrew, and I especially remember the excitement every time Harmon came to the plate to bat. He struck out a lot, but when he connected, bye bye baseball. The only current player who seems to have a similar batting style to Harmon, is Adrian Beltre. Harmon and Adrian swing with everything they've got, and dip their knees down as they follow through. Beltre often ends a swing, kneeling on one knee. From everything I've read about the guy - mainly from several OBCerswho have had the pleasure of meeting him in person - he was a true gentleman and lover of the game. Throw in some decent starting pitching from Jim Perry, Jim Kaat and a young Bert Blyleven and they were tough! I received the last card today for the 1950 Royal Dessert set--one of those oddball releases that my compulsion cherishes.  This is a rather obscure 24-card set with a bunch of variations (I am not chasing the variations).  One card per box of Royal Dessert gelatin/custard etc.  The short print of the set is Nanny Fernandez (who?). Big names in the set--Stan Musial, Phil Rizzuto, Pee Wee Reese, Warren Spahn, and Dom DiMaggio. Also included in the set is the Scottish star Bobby Thomson--the HOMer of the newest member of the 1962 green meanie dementia.
In any case, my last card was Johnie Ostrowski.  I entered his name in google--and lo and behold there was a reasonably priced card in Check Out My Cards.com.  I have to admit I couldn't find anything else reasonably priced on the site--but I am not complaining.
May all of OBC have a safe and responsible Memorial Day weekend.  Thanks to all of our membership who has served--protecting and preserving all of our freedoms.
