With the number of sets I work on, I tend to get e-mails of what is this or how much is it worth or the real question they are often asking, amI interested in buying. A couple of weeks ago, I got an e-mail froma woman, who said whe had some Coke FB caps. She wanted to know what they were, etc. Many of you know, that Coke caps, are among my fav items. It is very hard to get them all, as they were mainly issued only in the local marketof the team. Meaning, the Lions were only issued here in Detroit. Bears in Chicago, etc. While I have most of themidwest, I have very few from thewest coast teams. Based upon her description, she had San Diego Charger and AFL All-Star caps. The All-Stars were issued in conjunction with each local team. Therefore, the All-Stars are much more common, since you can get teh NFL All-Stars i Detroit, Chicago, Minnesota, etc. She had 12 Chargercaps, with a blue tint, I could not identify, and from her description, the rest were 1965s. She said she had 150 of them and asked me if I would beinterested in buying them. I told her I tend to buy Coke caps in bulk for$1 each, and that I would buy them at that price, inlcuding the dupes. She agreed, and also agreed to ship before I had to send the money. Last nite, I got a box with 142 FB caps, and 10 non-sport. To my surprise, almost 120 were Charger caps, not the All Stars. Contrary to her description, most were 1966, not 1965, but as it happens, there were some from all 3 years the issued them, 1964 - 1966 (plus the 4th unidentified year/set). As stated earlier, I have few from teh west coast, so I ended up getting 19 of 25 1964s and 15 of 36 1965 caps, when prviously, I did not have a single 1. In 1966, my set had already been started (I had 1). I now only need 4 of 36. Add to this a single hit to my 1964 AFL All Star set, and I got 78 coke caps, I did not previously have! I hope to get a minimum 100 hits a year to those lists, and frequently fall short. So 78 in 1 fell swoop, is great! So it does sometimes pay to respopnd to those blind e-mails. So, my wife is training with AAA in Costa Mesa, CA for the next month and since this week was my spring break, I drove down on Tuesday to meet her after work and spend a night away from home. I left plenty of time to stop at two card shops on the way that I had never been to before. The first got good reviews online and the second not so much but heck it was a store and those are rare. Arrived at good one with a sign on the door saying that therewas an emergency and they would be back tomorrow...oh well...second one was also closed eventhough they post their hours online as 10-6, on the door it says 2-6...just looking through the window, I decided they were too intogaming and new stuff. Spent a lovely night with the wife and hit the road around 10:30 am to stop at the shop in Huntington Beach. It is called Baseball Cards Plus. Small store but very clean and neat. Walked in and there was literally 5 people in the store already. A woman and her two grandkids, awoman with a notebook, and a man with a cane. Very motley group. I looked at the vintage in the glass cases and was impressed that the cards were notall PSA and were priced very fairly. While I was doing this, the woman with the notebook was asking if the shop wanted to buy some cards. I glanced over and saw pages of '66 Topps. I was interested. The shop owner was not there and the help decided not to take a chance on some beat up cards so he asked me if I was interested. I said sure...we went outside and I looked at what she had....two pages of '66 angels, 2 '66 koufax, 61 Mays, '62 mays, 14 '60 Fleer, 1 '61 Fleer, 5 '63 Fleer, 21 '62 Post incl. Killer, Berra, Ford, and Cash, 3 '61 Post, 2 '63 Post, 12 assorted commons between '59 and '64, and several '80s rookie cards incl. Mattingly, Ripken, Boggs, Griffey Jr. all topps. Also about 25 '80s stars incl. Rose, Ryan, Schmidt, Carlton, Murray, etc. I asked how much she wanted. She said $150, I said the cards are beat (the vintage avg. vg and the stars were poor)...I offered $80. She accepted and the guy with the cane offered me $20 for the fair Koufax. I said sure. So, I spent $60 and got the above highlighted by one '62 Post single print, '61 Fleer Lajoie #1 and Gehrig, 1 fair-good Koufax, 1 '61 Mays with a staple hole, 1 '62 Mays with a major crease and slight pen mark on the back, and all the above. I think I did well...oh yeah, I picked up a tougher ;48 Bowman Phillie and some supplies from the shop as well and they were willing to deal!! If you even find yourself in Costa Mesa/Huntington Beach area...I highly recommend this store. They are on ebay as well as SurfCityCards but admit that they price stuff high on ebay because of fees. It was no '41 Playball set but I still enjoyed the experience of a find. ================= To: Date: Sat, 9 Apr 2011 14:31:34 -0400 From: "senthi" Subject: 1958 mishap Hello All, About 8 months ago I went to check on my 58 set for gremlins.Discovered over 110 missing when I thought I only needed like 15 to finish the set. On Monday, I received an email from Jeff Whitworth to let me know that he would be spending a few days in Glasgow with his family, arriving Wednesday. After some hastily arranged plans,Maureen and I met up with Jeff, his wife Stacy, and kids Nathan and Madison for dinner in a local burger and ribs joint. As often happens in these situations, Jeff and I soon started talking baseball, cards, OBC and everything else as if we had known each other for 30 years. We spent a terrific couple of hours over dinner. Jeff is a very lucky man to have such a wonderful family. Stacy was great company and his 2 kids are a lot of fun. The now traditional formality of card exchange occurred, Jeff presenting with a very welcome 1961T Campanella MVP and several 1959Ts. After dinner, we all walked back to the apartment they had rented at which point our wives let Jeff and I off the leash for a short timeto go and do our own thing.Jeff had told me over dinner that heenjoyed a bourbon, and thathe appreciate a little bit of education in good scotch from a local, so I tookhim along to my favorite whisky bar,The Pot Still. Over the next 2 hours we sampled the delights of a few single malts, talked about everything under the sun, and generally set the world to rights. As it turned out, Ihave the honor of the first OBCer Jeff has met in person. For my part, Jeff is my 33rd "in person" encounter - 10 of which have, amazingly, been right here in Scotland. To: "Glenn Codere" Date: Saturday, April 16, 2011, 1:21 PM I just arrived home from a wonderful trip to Scotland. I want to send a huge thanks to Glenn and his beautiful and engaging wife Maureen for a wonderful night in Glasgow. I failed to give Glenn much warning but when I did contact him, in OBC tradition he quickly and graciously agreed to meet my family and I for dinner. Glenn and Maureen treated us to a grand dinner and wonderful conversation, and then Glenn took me out and taught me how to appreciate a good single malt scotch. The next day our family took an absolutely stunning tour to Loch Ness and Glencoe. Glenn had told me that it would be nice and he wasn=E2=99t joking. Our final day in Scotland we traveled toEdinburgh and toured the Edinburgh Castle among a few other sites. It didn=E2=99t disappoint either. Glenn was indeed my first OBC meeting. Glenn=E2=99s not joking when he says that it was as if we had known each other for 30 years. I think my wife Stacy was slightly surprised with her first experience with the OBC =E2=9Cbrotherhood.=E2=9D She very much enjoyed her discussions with Maureen and her (what I like to call) =E2=9Cpuzzled acceptance=E2=9D of Glenn=E2=99s baseball card hobby (just like the one my wife has). We have already made plans for Glenn and Maurine to visit us in Arizona for some Spring Training or Minor League baseball and plenty of bourbon. Glenn is a lucky man to have such a wonderful wife and live in such a beautiful area with such cool people. This trip is definitely one of the best vacations I have taken, a large part due to Maureen and Glenn. BTW, Glenn also presented me with a huge stack of hits that included two =E259s, eight =E260s, and eight =E265s (Dave Johnson RC and Don Lee hi#). Thanks for everything Glenn!! To: "OBC Ramblings" Date: Wednesday, April 13, 2011, 11:14 AM On Monday, I received an email from Jeff Whitworth to let me know that he would be spending a few days in Glasgow with his family, arriving Wednesday. After some hastily arranged plans,Maureen and I met up with Jeff, hiswife Stacy, and kids Nathan and Madison for dinner in a local burger and ribs joint. As often happens in these situations, Jeff and I soon started talking baseball, cards, OBC and everything else as if we had known each other for 30 years. We spent a terrific couple of hours over dinner. Jeff is a very lucky man to have such a wonderful family. Stacy was great company andhis 2 kids are a lot of fun. The now traditional formality of card exchange occurred, Jeff presenting me with a very welcome 1961T Campanella MVP andseveral After dinner, we all walked back to the apartment they had rented at which point our wives let Jeff and I off the leash for a short timeto go and do our own thing.Jeff had told me over dinner that heenjoyed a bourbon, and that he might appreciate a little bit of education in good scotch from a local, so I took him along to my favorite whisky bar,ThePot Still. Over the next 2 hours we sampled the delights of a few single malts, talked about everything under the sun, and generally set the world torights. As it turned out, Ihave the honor of being the first OBCer Jeff has met in person. For my part, Jeff is my 33rd "in person" encounter - 10 of which have, amazingly, been right here in Scotland. It was a truly wonderful night spent with fine people who we now look forward to visiting with again in the future. Cheers for now! I joined the group long before there was an Advisory Committee or a Rules of Conduct page. We only had common sense and common courtesy to go by. Although I've been on the AC for a good percentage of the time since it's been established, I see the AC and ROC as necessary evils considering the size of the group. As far as I'm concerned, the great majority of the Rules of Conduct are protocol BS that only maybe a dozen or so members even have to be concerned with.
