It's almost March Madness time so I thought I'd get an early jump on this contest. I've been running a contest for the NCAA basketball tournament for the last8 years. Here are the details: OBC members get assigned teams in the tournament and if your team wins thenyou get cards. Of course if your team loses you send cards. It works best with 16 participants so that where I'll draw the line. Anybody after 16 who wants to get in will get first crack next year. The way it works is you get one team from each of the 4 brackets. One of the 4 teams will be a 1-4 seed, one a 5-8 seed, one a 9-12 seed and one a 13-16/17 seed. The sum of the four seeds will equal 34 (or 35 since they've added four 17 seeds this year). For instance you may get a #2, #7, #10, and #15 while somebody else may get a #1, #8, #9, and #16. Again, if your team wins you get cards from the owner of the other team. The owner of the team that wins gets cards from everybody. Last year's winner was T.J. with his Duke team edging out Gersh's Butler team. Any questions let me know. Try to get back to me as soon as you can so I can draw the teams. Remember, space is limited to 16 teams. The following three people get first crack as they were on a waiting list from last year: John Stamper, Doug DeJone, and Ken Pillion. -Bob R ================= To: Date: Thu, 3 Mar 2011 12:54:13 -0500 From: Mac Wubben Subject: Anybody interested in a keeper fantasy league? The best selection, determined by me and at my sole discretion will win the other Mantle (all I ask is a single hit to any pre-1980 need on my wantlist--which could be as easy as a 1976 OPC).
Mantle one would be VG except for his freckles, mustache and eyeglasses
Mantle two would be VG except for the punch hole cut to the left edge, clipped corner, clipped right side and a little tiny ink on the reverse around the card number.
I am looking for originality and anything else that might come to mind.,
One week from today--Sunday March 13th is the last day for any one to submit their OBC reasoning.

Voice: Hey, wait for me, I got my homework done and can play Rocco: Great, I'm taking Brainiac instead of James Little James: You can't do that! He wasn't here when you picked me. Besides, he's never hit the ball in his life. Rocco: Yeah, but at least he can figure out why he missed it. Guido: No fair, you already picked James, I get Brainiac. Brainiac: WOW!! They're fighting over who gets me! Little James: No they're not. They're fighting over who DOESN'T get me. The game commences. As usual, right field is closed. Any ball hit there is an automatic out. Also, as usual, James is playing right field, and batting last. Rocco calls "pitchers rule", which means, that instead of throwing to first base you throw to the pitcher, and if the throw gets there before the batter gets to first base, he's out. After the game James goes home. He's had his usual 0 for 9, and has chased down 6 automatic outs that went through his legs. But, he had one highlight. One ball hit to right field bounced off a rock, hit him in the face and stopped there. The first ball he'd stopped all summer. He's getting better! Once he gets home he pulls out his baseball cards and lovingly goes through them. Being a true Phillies fan he has a separate box with his Wes Covingtons, Art Mahaffey's, Robin Roberts, Tony Gonzalez, Pancho Herrara, and of course, Tony Taylor. His other box has his "commons", players like Willie Mays, Ernie Banks, Warren Spahn, and Mickey Mantle--the cards no one in Philadelphia wants to pull from their packs. As he sits there staring at the cards he starts to notice the resemblence between himself and the picture of Mickey Mantle. Sure, there are a few differences, but he can take care of them. First, of course, Mickey needs glasses. Heck, maybe if he had worn them during games he wouldn't be the strikeout king. Then, he notices that Mickey needs some freckles to match his. Presto, a dead ringer for James! Then James realizes that this isn't his Mickey Mantle card, but his big brother Tony's. Tony will kill him if he finds out. He looks at the Mantle card and realizes that it looks just like him. Tony will know that James was the one who wrote on it. Then James gets a brilliant idea. He's watched movies and he knows the best way to disguise yourself is with a mustache. For some reason people can never tell who you are if you put on a mustache. So, quick as you can say "Bobby Del Greco" he adds a mustache to Mickey, and his deed is hidden forever. A short epilogue to our story. Little James went on to have a banner summer. By August he was no longer the last one picked. That honor went to a new kid on the block named Jose. Jose could hit the ball, but he was always ratting on everyone whenever they did anything wrong. No one wanted Jose on their team. Besides, he had a habit of having fly balls bounce off his head and over the fence. By the next summer James had given up on baseball for his new love--little Missy. The first thing Missy told James Beckett to do was throw away those thousands of baseball cards he had in shoeboxes--they were just junk and would never be worth anything. [1 Attachment] The Rainsley Sunday Sermon=E2=A6=E2=A6..maybe even verging on a dissertation. While at first glance this appears to be a no-brainer, some considerable thought must be given to the process of elimination, which is truly the only fair approach here. Both cards have their upsides. So working from left to right: -there is NOTHING wrong with a card that has a hole in it. Golf courses have holes, your fave fishing spot might be a hole, so just the connotation of a hole is not necessarily evil. Now as for the upper right corner, c=E2=99mon, admit it every one of ya, we have ALL cut corners somewhere along the line. Maybe not with cards, but somewhere. On to the right side, thismight as first appear to be a triangle=E2=A6.but let your imagination work here, viewed from a different angle, this could WELL be a pyramid. Pyramids served the Egyptians VERY well for a lot of years, (at least the dead ones), and a lot of people have complete faith in pyramids. And some peoplehave done quite well with pyramid schemes. -on to the card on the right. Sentimental value attached to this design forme. I was 10 when this card came out, and had just gotten glasses. Those OBC=E2=99ers who have met me know that freckles and I are no strangers. As for the mustache, that was simply a matter of timing=E2=A6.mine came later. This card could easily have been had this artistic creativity appliedto it by yours truly, as a self-portrait. Oh yeah, one other thing we havein common=E2=A6.that old bat on his shoulder=E2=A6=E2=A6I have one of those too, but she=E2=99s usually on my case, not my shoulder. So, in closing=E2=A6=E2=A6.I really hope I win this contest. It is just part of my persona, I simply HAVE to win. But=E2=A6..that being said, I don=E2=99t need the card, so I hope you send it to someone else in OBC, for that is where home should be for this baby. As a reward for not sending me this card, and running a really fun contest, there will be a 1964 Topps Coin of Willie Mays in the mail to you shortly. [1 Attachment] Date: Sun, 6 Mar 2011 22:25:20 -0500 Having been born in 1961 I have a fondness for all of the cards in that set. However, being a four eyed individual myself I have a problem with the authenticity of the card on the right. First of all I think it's really RhettButler in a Yank's uniform and that's just plain wrong. But say it really is The Mick, there is no way those glasses should be sitting so high on hisnose and where's the handy dandy velcro strap to prevent them from coming all of the way off? Furthermore, the styling is all wrong, those specs should be thick, black, Buddy Holly glasses instead of the wire-framed imitations they seem to resemble and there doesn't appear to be any lenses in the frames at all. This card has to be a fake and I just can't "see" having it in my binder when I can have the real thing (aka the card on the left). Thatcard is the real Mick-coy, and with the pre-drilled thumbtack hole it has to be rare too! If you look closely you'll see the craftsmanship that went into the cutting of this card. It took a fine and careful hand to make a cut in the side of this piece that matches up to the corner cut, the two pieces would have been interchangeable and that takes talent. The side cut is also a great slot for holding your gumband in place, no more slipping up thestack. This card fits right in with the art deco period's geometric designs and patterns. It has to be authentic and that's the card I would choose. Thanks for a great contest Peter.... "Do you remember the feel of the candy store steps?" Nice to see George, Ron Perry, Gary Mandell, and Mike Rich. I passed out some tokens to each of them as I arrived. Christina hasn't been to a show in like 10 years, and after me hanging out in Oklahoma seperated from the family, for all of last year she wanted to take the ride downwith me and reconnect with the hobby. She of course had to wonder about Mr. Mint being surrounded by camera's all afternoon, but Al seemed to be enjoying in his glory, for what ever reason it maybe that someone "finds" for him. My big find of the day was the 1960 Topps Mantle which knocks me down to just the 1958 AS Mantle off of my want lists. I picked and poked in most of the off price boxes and found 6 nose bleed hits off of my 1962 Topps set, and then a few others from baseball and football sets, including one UV set. Trying to prepare for Nationals, by pulling what I can off of the 1967 list, and 1962 list to close them out, so I can post a couple of new sets Iam interested in starting. Now be honest--how many of you have ever heard of Ike Boone (and Mark Macrae doesn't count)?  On the reverse of card three from the 1960 Leaf set (Frank Lary) the last line reads  "He hails from Northport, AL which produced Ike Boone, one of the greatest sluggers in baseball history."  Say what?
So I googled old Ike--and he had a reasonable carreer in the 1920s and 1930s--but his real claim to fame was his Pacific Coast League season in 1929.  Batting average .407, 55 HRs and 533 total bases in a 198 game season.
It is always interesting reading some of the card bios......

Anyone who feels I missed thanking them, with a post or a package, please let me know. I did not participate in the thread earlier this year, with collecting goals. The last one I could fine that I did, was in 2008. At that time, I hadhoped to get 470 cards, which, if they were the right ones, would put serious dents in many sets, and finish as many as 15 sets. I may have ended upwith that many cards, but only finished a few sets. For 2011, if I get 398 cards, I will seriously reduce numerous sets, and finish at least 11 sets. While aggressive, there is nothing outrageous on the lists. Like many, I tend to get down to just precious few superstars, shortprints, high numbers, etc., on many sets. I think it was after last year's National, I had 24 vintage sport sets that I was down to 1 card to finish. I have since finished 5 of those sets, but 4 more sets have now gotten down to that last single card. This list does NOT include variations or my fav Coke caps. I have finished more than just those 5 sets, by finishing some sets that I had needed more than 1 card or by buying a complete set. I have recently bought 2 interesting compelte sets. The first, also0 has a set in the Huggins and Scott auction next week; 1964 Rawlings Glove on the Box set. While the set I got was cut off the box and have multiple creases, it has a Mantle and the set of 8 cost me $25. The other recent set, was a 48 count set of Soccer cards, from Japan. I have no idea what year they are, but they look like cards I have from the 20s and 30s. As part of that, I have been trying to start a conversation regarding how many sets of cards, are devotedto a different sport. I am not talking Olympic sets, that cover 100 different sports. Many o fus have Baseball, Football, Basketball and Hockey. Others also have Boxing. I also have Soccer, Bowling, Golf, Wrestling, Jai Lai, LaCrosse, Auto Racing, Cricket, etc. I have discussions as to what are "different" sports. Is Softball, different from Baseball? Men's Slow Pitch v Woman's Fast Pitch? Canadian Football different from NFL or Australian Rules Football? Yes I have cardsfrom all ofthese. Is NASCAR different from Winston Cup? Other sports mentioned, Biking (think Tour de France), Horse Racing, Rugby, Skiing, Swimming/Diving, Track & Field, Billiards, Chess, Bobsled/Luge. I have individual cards fromsets that cover multiple sports, such as 1952 Wheaties, T-218, etc. WhileI may collect every vintage sports card set known to man, the above might explain why I draw the line at sports only. You have to have standards, after Upcoming events, a few FOOT members, plan on attending the Strongsville, OHcard show on Saturday, April 9. This is an annual 3 day show (April 8 -10), featuring vintage cards and has multiple OBC dealers. There is the semi-annual Toronto show April 29 - May 1. I expect to attend Saturday and Sunday only. If you can make either show, please post a note. My dupes box is in fairly good shape, so if you have anything to swap, please let me know. Besides that, I'm going to have to wait until the basement is cleaned out before I can even think of getting at the cards that are currently stored there. We also celebrate our third year of marriage on Wednesday the 30th as well. Facebook is a funny thing. I connected with a couple people who went to elementary school with me. A small group of us met up the other day. We were in all the same classes together as a unit for about five years. I went to a different high school than all of them and they sort of scattered after their sophomore year as well. Even though it's been thirty years since I've seen or spoken to most of them, it was cool to hear what they've been up to after all this time.
