The good news is I got 2 cases this year, because last year they were so expensiveon ebay, I should be ok selling the extra boxes. Kreevich had been on my wantlist for 30 years and was one of about a dozen exhibits I still needed. I found him in OBC-condition on ebay along with a card of Bill Lee. I used GavelSnipe (great tool) with a $32 bid for both cards and won it for $32 exactly. The bidding went from $8 to $32 in the last few seconds. I hope I didn't beat out any OBCers. Kreevich is pictured as a White Sox which would probably mean he was one of the 1939 cards that was dropped after a year or two (before the war stopped the exhibit card production) and consequently very hard to find. He wasn't too bad of an outfielder with a .283 lifetime average with the Cubs, Soxs, As, Browns, and Senators as he bounced around during WWII. He made one all star team and appeared with the Browns in the 1944 series. Now to find Mulcahy, Rizzo, and the rest of those elusive exhibits! Oh, but then additional variations will turn up...and maybe I'll want to upgrade the cards with multiple pin holes to only one pin hole...and then upgrade to only cards with very small pin holes...The quest continues. I've accepted an offer out in Denver, so I'll be moving out at the end of March. I'll still be flying airplanes, getting a great mountain view, running on awesome trails, and enjoying about 100 microbreweries...can't beat it!! I haven't mapped out the drive yet (I'll be solo while my kidsfinish out the school year and we try to sell the house), but maybe I can hook up with OBCers along the way for lunch/dinner stops. I'll get the map figured out in a couple weeks and see if anybody is interested. Hopefully this is the last move for awhile. Since I've been in OBC, we've in IL, DE, OH, CA, UK, and FL. I may have a few of these details a little off, but here are the main points. He was over at his dad's house, helping to move some boxes in the basement. They found a box that had some collectibles that were given to his dad by his grandpa andhis great uncle. Both his grandpa and great uncle worked at Wrigley Field in their youth. My buddies dad can remember his dad telling the story of errands they would routinely run for ballplayers, both in and out of the ballpark. Well, one of the items in the box is a Honus Wagner bat. Apparently, as a show of thanks, Wagner gave the bat to my buddies grandpa. I knowwe have a bat collector or two in the group. How can I advise my friend as to the best way to find out if this is an authentic Wagner bat? Should I have him contact an auction company? Bring it to the PSA booth at the nextshow here in Chicago? It was a great time hanging out and rummaging through bargain bins. Several OBC dealers were in attendance and although Guru was a little disappointed in the show's size, it was a welcome relief from the usual mall show I'm sometimes lucky enough to hit. It was the first show put on by that group and they're hopeful that they can keep doing them with some regularity. I was able to do some damage to the 1972 Topps birthyear quest, including a a really nice Ryan that Guru wouldn't let me pay for (Thanks Larry!). Looking for early Bowmans turned out to be a little tougher for Larry but he was able to start a nice 1962 Post football set. Perhaps the highlight of my day may have been finding some really rough '51 Bowmans in OBC Dealer Roger Neufeldt's bargain bin and having Guru tell me "they're too rough, even for me." I didn't think that was possible... All in all, a great chance to meet another OBCer and hang out. Guru's only the 2nd OBCer I've had the pleasure of meeting in person (some of you oldtimers may recall Lorin Anderson who was in Columbia, SC) and it only reinforces a thought you see repeated sometimes here: when OBCers meet, it's like meeting an old-friend. For best deals, cash will almost certainly win. If you have an OBC hat, many dealers would accept a check (OBC has many advantages), but again, some will add tax or not give as good a bargain. I'm five hours south of the location, but heck, I'm retired now:) My first impression when I walked inside was a bit of disappointment as I was thinking this show would be bigger. But the first table I saw was my oldfriend Roger Neufeldt from Oklahoma, so I knew the drive north would be worth it. After a real nice visit with Roger, I sat right down and started pulling some early Bowman cards from his bargain boxes. And I know some of you won=92t believe this, but I did pass on a handful of these that were justtoo beat up for the asking price. Jimmy =93Catfish=94 Parker called on my phone, and it was great to meet another We rummaged through bargain boxes, avoided that UV crap, and generally had a great time. I knocked maybe 30 cards from my wantlist, and also purchasedabout 1/2 of the 1962 Post football set, but I didn=92t realize that thoseSPs are so expensive. Catfish saw a 1972 Nolan Ryan priced at $40, but he was looking for a cheaper one. The =93dealer in the corner=94 had one priced at $15 and he told Catfish $10, which I quickly paid for. So don=92t think I am some big hero buying Jimmy a 1972 Ryan:) It was a nice card for $10.We stopped by =93the dealer in the corner=94 several times during the day. I passed on a couple of Hires Root Beer cards for $5 each, went back for the later and they were gone. Jimmy saw a 63 Fleer Maury Wills at $5 which I thought was pretty good too, but we left that one as well. I exited when the show closed at 6, and I had that buzz we all get after looking at cardboard for 8 straight hours:) Catfish left around 4. I was planning on attending Sunday as well, but there was no point as I had seen all that was offered. La Quinta Inn was 2 minutes away, and after dinner at =93Varsity=94 burgers, I called it a night. Pulled out at 7:30AM, and still had $600 card budgetin my pocket. It was worth the trip and a pretty good show. But I think I can do better on EBay to be quite honest. ================= To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com, mkohn1@gmail.com, Date: Mon, 14 Feb 2011 09:51:12 -0500 (EST) From: Joshua Levine Subject: Graig Kindler contest...GREAT baseball art Okay...I know many of you are on facebook...I want you to check out Graig Kindlers page...link below...if you like his art...follow the directions. One problem, there is a lump in hall outside Erika's room. I thought it might not be noticeable, but when laid the floor down over it, it didn't come out nice. It was "mushy" downstream of the lump, and you could feel it when you walked on it. Sharon told menot worry about it - but maybe it's because I weigh twice as much as her and "mushed" more, or maybe because I needed an excuse for a tool - I went out and got a concrete grinder to get that lump out. Now a friend of mine told me it creates "a lot of dust." The guy at the store said "dusty day for you." Seems like I should have been prepared, but I wasn't. After all, it was a not even a foot across - not like I was grinding a whole floor. Anyway, I get my mask and swim goggles (in case it got dusty) and plugged in grinder. Let me tell you, that baby was magic! It ground down that lump nobody's business. After only about 5 minutes or so, it was pretty much gone, so I reached for my level to check it out. Oddly enough, my level was covered in about an inch of dust - didn't think I could make that much dust...hmmm. Then the fire alarm went off and the phone started ringing. I pulled offmy goggles to go get the phone (it was going to be the security system) when much to my surprise, the sun had been blotted out. Either there was an eclipse on, or I had underestimated what a grinder could do...see if you can guess which. The phone kept ringing, so I made my way into the kitchen like a Chilean miner searching for the cave exit and finally found the blinking light it was attached to. I found it hard to give the guy our password when he told me house was on fire due to the amount of dust in my mouth, but I finally got it out and took care of that. As I went to turn off the alarm, I almost tripped the smallest Siberian Husky I'd ever seen - who's dog was that?!? After a shake, turns out it was my beagle, Zoey...thank goodness. Remember that scene in Cat in the Hat when the house is a mess and the parents are coming home? I'm sort of like that right now. It's 10:15 and Sharon going to be home in an hour. I don't have Thing 1 and Thing 2 to help meout, so my choices are to start cleaning feverishly, or to just have a mid-morning beer and take the abuse that's coming. I might actually need a second beer, since I'm afraid the first will congeal in my mouth. I'm thinking that'smy best option, then throw something in about "how much money I saved by doingthe floors myself, dear - now you can go buy some shoes." Either way, I may be sleeping on the couch...if I can find it. Ken's card notes a team-leading 12 victories in 1961, which masks somewhat that he also lost 15 for an expansion squad that went 70-91. I started this box hoping to make swapping cardboard a little easier.. here are the basics of the project: 1) I have a box of cards at my house that make up the "Virtual traveling dup 2) I have the list of cards and the basic info posted at : http://virtualtravelingdupbox.yolasite.com/ 3) You can claim up to 8 cards from the list and I just ask that you send back something comparable--- similar years, highs for highs --etc. to replace them in the box--- just make sure it's not already in the box. That way it should be easier than having to hit a wantlist. 4) Send an extra stamp with your cards (so I don't go broke) and enjoy! There won't be any huge hits in here and it's probably the biggest benefit to those of you who have some easier lists...but I wanted to make it available to any interested traders in the group. Let me know if you'd like to participate or have any questions!! Now I have met Rob a few times before. This was the first time I have had the pleasure to meet Peter. Rob lives 3000 miles away and Peter lives 20 minutes away...go figure. We had a nice meal and great conversation. Exchanged some awesome cardboard. Peter knocked a couple of OPC Dodgers from mylist, 79 and 73, two from the shrinking 67 Topps set and 6 from 58. Great cards and even better conversation. Peter also picked up the tab for dinner, Thanks again for that. Peter, it was nice to finally meet you. Last Sunday I met up with Rob and his family. We hung out in Hollywood for awhile, did some people watching, walked and talked along the walk of Stars. Later Rob's wife took my daughter for a little window shopping and left the guys to talk about real life stuff, like sports and the kids. Rob it wasgreat seeing you again. Looking forward to making it out to New York this summer.
