In the past couple of weeks two sets have gotten really close to getting killed, both with OBC help. My 1970 Topps set is down to only two cards (Mays and Lolich). Basically Rich Niessen and John Dahms have been taking turns hitting that set all year and, with some help from Rick Johnson and Mike Rich, it is almost done. I can't thank you all of you guys enough--it is great to see the grey monster almost tamed. I have also gotten my 1956 T set down to only 7 (Berra, Killebrew, Nuxhall,Yankees Team, Dale Mitchell, Bob Cerv, and Larsen). Lots and lots of people have helped with this--with Richard Dingmann and Joe Adriance hitting it twice. Thanks so much! I never in my wildest dreams thought I would get the need list for that set down to single digits--and I wouldn't havewithout It does lead to a question, though. I have been trying to knock the set out on eBay and have found a few cards are really hard to find cheaply. The Berra, Killebrew, and Yankees TC I understand (though, in my world, team cards would be worth less than the ninth-year card of utility infielders). That is the year of Larsen's perfect game so I suppose he deserves a little premium. I guess I can also see Nuxhall as a minor star (between his debut as a 15-year old and his announcing career). Does anyone have any idea why Dale Mitchell and Bob Cerv command a premium, though? Both were nice players but recent set breaks on eBay have had them priced above Early Wynn, George Kell, Bob Lemon, and other HOFers as well as Yankees like Skowron and Bauer and other guys in their series. Is there a scarcity issue or something else I am missing? Were they huge fan favorites? Or is it simply the luck of the draw? It is kind of puzzling me...but I also don't want to pay a premium if I don't need to. In the drop down listto select your name, click in the white box or the down arrow, then type the first letter of your first name. Continue to type that letter until your name is highlighted, then press enter on your keyboard. If you pass yourname by clicking too many times, no worry as you will simply scroll continuously through the names. This will save you time using the scroll bar to locate your name. Another way is to select any name from the list so it is highlighted in blue, then simply type the first letter of your name. All the names that begin with that letter will scroll until your name appears. I wasn't the only one who had hada long New England week due to our freak fall storm which left many without power for up to five days (worse in CT) - fortunately only 2 for my house. I rolled into the show only 30 minutes after opening on Saturday morning, collected my free seniors entry pass (gotta love it), and began my usual quick sweep of the room before diving into any boxes. I saw Randy K's and Kevin Savage's tables, but no others I knew by name, though vaguely recognizeda few others. Saw almost none of my favorite bins of mixed vintage cards, but started anyway on what I could find and was soon rewarded with a couple variations andeven 2 cheap hits to '60s Topps sets and 1 '53 Bowman B&W. Ran into Sean, and then Jim Hatch, and eventually Bob D and Spike. Bob was kind enough to pass a mc card for me for my new binders and Spike dug through a largish box and came up with a '56 Topps team variation for me. Overall, found about a dozen inexpensive and relatively unknown variations (still fun searching through bins of commons!). Turnout seemed a tad light, and diminished rapidly as the afternoon wore on. Dealers said they were doing ok, but without much enthusiasm. It appeared from some conversationswith dealers that it's increasingly hard for them to justify bringing boxes of "junk" to shows when they could try to sell higher priced cards instead. Too bad for us ... Still, 7.5 hours flew by in a moment, and I was once again in the car heading into the setting sun, repeating my sleepy mantra, "An extra hour of sleep tonight, an extra hour of sleep tonight..." The Babe and baseball, however, could not overcome Japan's growing nationalism, as a bloody coup d'=E9tat by young army officers and an assassination attempt by the ultranationalist War Gods Society jeopardized the tour's success. That came close to being the highlight of the show, as each year the show gets slightly smaller, and finds get fewer. I did a tally and I got approximately 61 hits, from 18 sets, a publication, a UV set and an upgrade (not among the 61 hits). Dupe pick-ups may have been about another 10 cards. I miss the days of getting an 800 count box or more of cards at a show. At the national, I usually get hits to over 100 different sets in the 5 days, so 18 sets, is a little low. I guess in comparison, I got through this entire show in approximately 5 1/2 hours, where the National, I am lucky to getthrough the whole show in 5 days. Iwent to the show needing 1 card to complete 25 different sets. Highlights was the big swap with TJ, where he completed my 35 Goudey set and then traded me 5 of his single 49 Bomwans, which gets me down to 6. INCREDIBLE Ron Perry found the elusive 51 Topps Bllue Back Schoendienst at William Chappell's table (I had not looked through the box with that in it), which completes my Blue back set. It was the single most targetted card for me at the show, and I got it for around $17.50. Next cheapest one I saw was $110!HUGE Another highlight was picking up the T-201 Mathewson. I have just over 1/2the set, and this is 1 of the only 3 big cards in the set. I got this fromRon Estes. I also picked up 4 more 51 & 52 Berk Ross from Ron. At Kevin Savages table, he allowed me to buy 10 1950 Topps FB, from a lot he had listed as 75 different. Thanks for him breaking the lot. This gets me down to the unlucky 13 to complete a base set. Steve Rittenberg recently picked up some 35 Wheaties Series 1 for me (including Gehrig and Foxx) at a show in St. Louis. I got 2 more from JD. From the Johnsons, I got a small stack of 61 & 62 Kahn's. The show keeps getting smaller. Fortunately, I did find the above, plus a few other hits. If not for the camaraderie of OBCers, I am not sure I would make the trek as often. I compare the cost of attending (approx. $100, including gas, tolls, parking, admission and extra cost of food on the road), compared to the amount I spend on cards. If I only spend $100, it would double the cost of each card. I figure, I need to spend at least $500, to make it feel worthwhile to attend. Just my thoughts. With the cost of thetolls doubling next year, and gas expected to go up, we will need to recruit more FOOT folks to join us, to keep pricing in line, and that is only ifRon is able to arrange extremely cheap lodging. Still had a great time. Finished 2 sets, although still need 1 card to finish 24 more sets. But once established on his own around the year 1606, Maggini developed his skills and experimented with his designs until he achieved a level of expertise that is still highly regarded.[1] His violas, like these of his master, are regarded as the best in the world for the rich deep sound and power of tone. >The only known pupil of Maggini is Valentino Siani, who worked with him c.1610-1620, before he moved to Florence and started his own business. >Maggini succumbed to the bubonic plague of 1630-31 that also took another important early luthier, Girolamo Amati. This fact arouses suspicions that some of Maggini's later works are perhaps creations from a different maker since tests reveal that some instruments bearing a genuine Maggini label are from trees living after Maggini's death.[2] >The National Music Museum has two Maggini instruments in its collection. One is a bass viola da gamba. The other is a violin. Both predate his death.[3] >A genuine Maggini violin ranges in value from $200,000 to $2,000,000.[4] >On Nov 21, 2011, at 7:51 PM, Geno Wagner wrote: >> Fellas -- >> I've had a violin on my shelf (in it's case) since my uncle died about 10 years ago. My reasoning...Rose bet on baseball, admitted he bet on his team and he hadan influence over the outcome of games. Did he through games? Who knows? But in every major league ballpark since 1920, there is at least one sign that prohibits gambling of any kind. A reminder for the Black Sox scandal. Hebroke one of the most sacred rules in baseball. The punishment...banishment from baseball...totally fair in my opinion. I actually speak about Rose to my fourth graders. I talk to them about rules and laws. I also talk aboutforgiveness and penitence. Rose lives near me and I have had occasion to talk with him many times over the years. He is not repentant. He still spends most of his time in Vegas and I will tell you this...he still gambles. A drug addict needs to stay away from drugs completely to be considered sober...don't we hold that gambling is an addiction? Then Rose should stay away from that as well? Until he shows remorse and a willingness to seek treatment...then forget him. If you want to talk to him about it, you can catch him once a month at his store in the Forum Shops at Ceasars Palace. The steroid issue is a little muddier in my opinion. Many of these players used legal drugs to cheat. HGH is actually a legal drug and can be proscribed legally by a doctor. But the way they used (or abused) them if you will gives me pause and is likely illegal under the laws of prescribed drug law.Just because a drug is legal, does not make abusing it the right thing to do. We have all heard the about the OxyCodone epidemic. That is a legal drug that can be used illegally. These are major league players that if not breaking the law outright, are setting a very dangerous example for the demographic that I feel is most important, children. Baseball finally is taking steps in limiting tobacco again on the field and I feel that is the right thing to do for a sport that typically children are a major part of. The cheating aspect is another thing to think about. They used a drug that not everyone had access to and that many chose not to use. My opinions only... BTW, ask yourself this...the implications of prohibition? A legal substancesuddenly becomes illegal...then after a decade, it becomes legal again...what about the players who knowingly and admittedly used alcohol during thattime (Ruth, Ott, Hubbell, etc.)...they broke the law of the land. Should they be held responsible and removed from the Hall of Fame? -----Original Message----- From: joedenning71 To: OBC-Ramblings Sent: Sun, Nov 27, 2011 6:07 am Subject: [OBC-Ramblings] Re: Pete Rose Rose should definitely be in. But he was a different caliber of player from Shoeless Joe. Plus his crime of betting on the Reds to win is less severe than throwing a World Series. But if he goes on the ballot, so should Jackson (and Cicotte, for that matter). I KNOW I am on the minority side of the steroid issue. I think that was the game from 1994 through testing (and maybe before--I have suspicions aboutsome of the early 1980s guys who were injury-prone but suddenly bulked up and got durable in the early 80s). For the HOF to disregard the whole period (or the whole period except for Pedro and Jeter) is historically problematic. Maybe they could have a separate wing or type of plaque for those guys. No one ever talks about it, but amphetamines are illegal performance enhancers too and were all over the place in the 1960s-2010. John Milner said that Mays even took them regularly. If amphetamines are ok for the HOF,I am not sure that we can keep the steroid guys out...plus, according to the Ken Burns documentary, at least one current HOF player was taking "Canseco cocktails" in 1990. Pete Rose should not get in the Hall of Fame during his lifetime. Betting on Baseball, on your own team will get you banned for life. Even if you bet your team to win, you still have some control in the outcome. Perhaps you rest your stars the day before. You use your bullpen to win today and not worry about tomorrow. Sure it's easier to lose a game, however you can control a win to some degree. I am not sure he should be inducted into theHall after his death. Joe Jackson is still out. Pete is an arrogant SOB in person, it seems, and has proven that he is a liar when it came to his gambling. Did he bet on the Reds as a manager? Of course. But - the museum in Cooperstown is a Hall Of Fame - NOT a Hall of Character and Morality. I have seen or heard nothing that would indicate Rose beton baseball while he was a player (although, given his character, it wouldn't surprise me.) But consider this example: Ty Cobb, an avowed racist, physically attacked afan in Cleveland during a game. It was a criminal assault. Yet Cobb is in the HOF. I'm sure there are other examples of men in the Hall who were terrible people, yet shouldn't they be judged by their accomplishments between the white lines? I think Rose deserves to be enshrined - perhaps not duringhis lifetime (after all, it's a "lifetime" ban, not a "for all eternity" ban, right?), with the notation on his plaque that he was banned for gambling as a manager. Should Shoeless Joe (and even Eddie Cicotte) be enshrined too? The water gets a little muddier here, since both confessed to taking money to throw games as players(Cicotte's actions clearly convict him. I think Jackson's do too, despite his denials & performance in the Series). But then again, if itis truly a "lifetime" ban, Cicotte & Jackson should now be eligible as well, again with the proviso that their plaques clearly state their banishmentfrom the game. That's all. Feel free to rip me up one side & down the other :-) PS - And - I'm not a lawyer, but I think the whole "uh, well, banished players are not eligible for the Hall" crap that Selig pulled AFTER Rose was banished is a clear example of an ex post facto ruling, designed specificallyto keep Rose out. I'm really puzzled as to why Rose hasn't sued the bejeezus out of MLB over this. I think Bud Selig is a weasel & the worst thing that has happened to baseball management in the last 50 years ("hey, let's shift my Brewers to the NL for balance! But 10 years later, to re-balance things, let's shift the ASTROS - a team with a 50-year NL history - to the ALfor balance!" and "the All Star game is a tie!" etc etc etc). That ruling didn't exist until Buddy Boy realized that Pete would probably get write-invotes for the HOF. I've heard stories of how easy it can be to get rid of stuck-on paper on the backs of cards, but I've always been nervous about trying it. Well, at a show I picked up a couple of '52 Topps really cheap & decided it was finally time to experiment. Carefully following the directions, I dunked these babies into a couple of containers of distilled water (I used distilled b/c of the lime content of our local water supply, just to be safe; I've read that regular tap water works just as well), let them soak for about 30 minutes, and then very gently used a q-tip to nudge the remnants of the scrap-book paper off (I was imnpatient; supposedly the stuff would come off on its own). Then I blotted them dry, sandwiched them between paper towels & then between 2 boards with a5-pound weight on top, & waited. Today they look fantastic. No leftover paper at all, no damage to the cards.I'm giving them another day under the weight to make sure they don't warp, but they feel dry & are very flat. I tried 2 more with mixed results. One card had something glued to the front & whatever it was wouldn't come off, so the glue must not have been water-soluble. But the other once came out perfect. So now I'm going to be on a quest to see what other card backs I can clean up. This may not be everyone's cup of tea; maybe the stuck-on paper is partof the "character" of the card, but since I have no intention of getting rid of these - why not? Just thought I'd Ramble a bit about card-soakin'. Not for the faint of heart but works pretty well. Now to figure out how to add back the balance of 1952 Topps cards that were cut down to the size of the 1952 Bowmans. (http://baseball1.com/files/rose/rule21.html) Rule 21(D): Betting on ball games. Any player, umpire, or club or league official or employee, who shall bet any sum whatsoever upon any baseball game in connection with which the bettor has a duty to perform shall be declared permanently ineligible. So it's a PERMANENTLY INELLIGIBLE ban not a LIFETIME ban. That is why Joe Jackson did not make the Hall of Fame when he died. Also there's some good stuff here: http://baseball1.com/files/rose/ Under "Answers to frequently asked questions about Pete Rose" I found #5 and #6 to be interesting.
