Hello All, I just love this topic when it crops up very few years - it really is an opportunity to reflect on the joy this hobby can bring each and every one of us. I have really been out of the loop over the last 12 months asI have been focused on my job and family obligations and as a result have spent considerably less time with cardboard. One of the consequences of this has been a very unorganized collecting area that grew very much out of control this past year. I spent 4 or 5 days clearing up that mess last week and once again can get to AND FIND stuff that I want to get my hands on. For those of you that have been to my "man cave" no explanation is needed but for others I live in a quad level home and my collection is stored in the basement which is also finished off with a full bar. Well it is rare that the bar area ever gets used for its intended purpose as I ALWAYS have boxes, card stacks, binders and folders of hobby fodder strewn everywhere about. Much of my collection is shelved in binders and is easily assessable but still much is unorganized in boxes of various sizes that seem to get stuck in every nook and cranny of available space that I can find. Add to that that Donna also uses the space to store product from her candle business and it is easy to see that without some TLC the space quickly becomes a "catch all" that is not at all useful. Well today I can see the bar, the bar chairs are cleared off and 3 or 4 buddies could gather to watch a game and share some suds. While there are still some boxes and clutter behind the bar the space is once again useful so that leads me to my "collecting goals" (about time - right): 1) Continue to keep my collecting space a useful living area and keep working toward a better organizational system. 2) As for cardboard, since I have SO MANY sets on my list I usually don't box myself in and commit to specifics BUT the last (16) cards from `60's eraTopps sets are not likely to arrive in trades and/or as a RAOK from fellowtraders so perhaps I will target the following set killers: 1961 TOPPS =E2=93 5 cards : 475 (M ant le MVP), 516B (Checklist w/Umpires feet cut off at dirt baseline), 572 ( B.Roby AS ), 578 ( M ant le AS ), 580 ( Kaline AS ). 1963 TOPPS =E2=93 2 cards : 200 (M ant le) and 537 (Rose RC). 1966 TOPPS =E2=93 9 cards : 517 (Checklist w/W.Sox Rookies) 526 (Twins Team), 540 (McLain), 547 (Clarke), 562 (Snyder), 577 (Lamabe), 583 (Tiger Team), 589 (Klimchock) and 598 (G.Perry). 3) Get some stuff out to my fellow traders as I feel as if I have been the recipient of so much generosity this past year and did not follow through with "pay-back" as was normally my regular course of business. 4) Get back to the National this year. I think that will do it - keep those post coming as I always enjoy reading what others think about their collections - BE WELL!!! Collecting goals: 1950 to 1993 regular sets Topps and Bowman. Ten (or more?) years ago I needed 11 cards to complete these sets. I am now down to 10 cards. That's one entire card now in 10 years (1952 Topps Jackie Robinson). I'm going to try to knock off another card over the next ten years. The want list from memory is 1951 B Mantle, 1954 B Williams, 1952 T Mantle, Reese, Dickey, McDougald, Mathews, Campy, 1963 Rose and 1967 Seaver. In order to stay active in collecting though I continue to branch into other sets and have my eye on at least 300 cards next year to make some progress in Hostess, football, boxing, and hockey wants. Also 1940 Playball and 1949 Bowmans will be on my list forever as I chip away at those sets. I was influenced by this exchange a few years ago to start my own collecting goals by set at the beginning of each year and it has helped. I second your call for Jack Morris. What an unbelievable big game pitcher he was. I couldn't stand him, seeing that he played for the Tigers, Twins, Blue Jays (all american league rivals) but I thought he was great. I was absolutely sick to my stomach when he threw the no-hitter against the ChiSox. On another topic, someday, maybe the HOF will let us know who each writer votes for. Then I can hear why a voter won't vote for someone in his first or second year, but will vote for him in his third year. It has never made sense to me. Are they a HOFer or not? I remember when Carlton Fisk was up in his first year. Fisk was my absolute favorite player. I was so excited that he was up for the Hall. I remember someone on radio or ESPN saying that Fisk wouldn't make it in his firstyear because he was up against Ryan and Yount and Brett.THen I heardit again from another source. I didn't buy it. But, sureenough, Fisk didn't get in. He made it the next year though. Iguess that one year wait was the difference. Again, it doesn'tmake sense to me. I am beginning to be more accepting and magnaminous so i will just say...it is what it is :)
A part of me believes that the induction class has to do with$$$$$ generated at the induction weekend.
If no one gets elected it would leave millions of dollars on the table. I was therefore shocked when the Hawk went in alone (i know there are always writers, execs and other non-players too, but i'm guessing their fan base pales in comparison) Also very surprised that Ron Santo wasn't elected. Perish the thought if they were holding back Santo for a year they "needed him" to boost attendance, but i wouldn't put it past them.

That is not my magnaminous side speaking though....so congrats to Bert and Robbie...i voted for you both!

Holy Cow! Thought I would share.... Manager Bucky Harris chose Bill Bevens (winner of only seven-of-twenty decisions in '47) for Game 4 and the unlikely hero pitched one of the most amazing 9 2/3 innings in World Series history. Although he permitted a fifth inning run (on two walks, a sacrifice and a ground ball), he entered the ninth with a no-hitter and a 2-1 lead. Bruce Edwards started the Dodgers' half of the inning by flying out, and Furillo drew a walk. Then Spider Jorgensenfouled out, bringing Bevens within one out of the first no-hitter in WorldSeries history. Reserve outfielder Al Gionfriddo was sent in to run for Furillo and Pete Reiser came in as a pinch-hitter for reliever Hugh Casey. Gionfriddo proceeded to steal second and Reiser was walked intentionally, despite the fact he represented the potential winning run. To add yet another change, Eddie Miksis was sent in to run for Reiser, who was bothered by a recurring leg injury. Eddie Stanky was the next in the line-up, but Burt Shotton, (who had stepped in as Dodgers' manager after Leo Durocher was suspended) replaced him with veteran Cookie Lavagetto. The "Chess like" strategy of Shotton's multiple player moves proved brilliant as Lavagetto walloped Bevens' second pitch and Gionfriddo and Miksis sped home ending the potential no-hitter and evening the Series at two games apiece. I recently read somewhere (cannot remember the source) but lower the mound from 15 to 12 inches in '69 actually shortened the distance the pitcher hadto throw the ball. Sorry for the math/engineering in me, but the pitchingrubber to home plate can be thought of as a right triangle, with the hypotenuse being the path of the thrown ball. Reducing the mound reduces the hypotenuse, which actually shortens the distance to the plate, and thus the pitcher would actually be closer to the plate than with the higher pitchingmound. The difference is small indeed but, as the engineer I am, I thought this was brilliant explanation! --- On Sat, 1/8/11, smartalecx@aol.com wrote: From: smartalecx@aol.com Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] 1969 lowering of pitchers' mound? Never would have thought this was possible before OBC. =95 Look at possibly thinning out 50s and 60s Topps sets and concentrating on 2 or 3 sets, using discarded sets as trade bait. =95 Start a prewar set. T205? Thinking about easing into it by starting Boston NL (precursor to my beloved Braves) T205 set then moving on to T205 NL set with eventual long-term goal of completing entire set. =95 Add more items to the Dale Murphy and Tom Brewer lists. =95 Have fun! I've never done "resolutions" or had goals for a given calendar year -- I'm WAY too contrary for that. But I have given thought to what directions I want my collection to go in, sort of. I'm going to continue to chip away at the 1950 Bowman baseball and football sets. What really drove me to those two sets is the artwork. And by the way, if anyone ever hears of any original artwork from either of these sets going up for sale, let me know. It would be outstanding to own one of those items! I am also making slow and steady progress on the '54 Topps set, but am trying to figure out which VG/EX Aaron rookie and Banks rookie I can shell the bucks out for. I've slowed way down on Pilots material as it is hard to come by and there are so many serious Seattle collectors who have the stuff nailed down. I'm still doing "type cards" but leaving pre-war to those who have a good jump already on those cards, and have deeper pockets than I do. My main interest seems to be in early to mid 1950s cards and material, so I will stick with that. I just need to get out on the road and do some "card hunting" -- that to me is the most fun about collecting -- chasing the stuff. He's accepted into SUNY Brockport, SUNY New Paltz, and Elmira College, and we're waiting to hear from his top two choices, Ithaca College and Cornell There may have been some miscommunication between me and the OBC-AC, probably my fault as I no write good. I want to make this project free to all OBC members, and was asking them to vote on splitting the costs of CDs/DVDs/mailers/postage with me, out of the dues money already collected and in the treasury. I figured that would be a lot easier than having a lot of individual people try to send me money or a PayPal transaction. No big deal, I'll foot the bill for the whole thing. I have some responses already from a bunch of people which I will start taking care of beginning tomorrow. I have an unexpected week of vacation next week so I'll have plenty of time. In the meantime, please let me know which of the following formats you want: Option 1: DVD of Baseball, Football, Basketball, Hockey, Boxing/Golf, and NonSports - the whole collection. Option 2: DVD of (your choice of two or more of the above). Option 3: DVD of Baseball Option 4: CD of your choice of any single category among Football, Basketball, Hockey, Boxing/Golf, or NonSports. For those who want Baseball images but do not have a DVD drive, I can copy only the image directories onto maybe four or five CDs but I may be running low on them, will have to make another Office Depot run. Also, you can ask for several different categories on CDs in Option 4, but if you do have access to a DVD drive, I'd prefer to load them all onto a single DVD. It would really help if you could include your mailing address in your email to me along with your choices. Otherwise I'll send the discs to your current mailing address on file. ================= Date: Fri, 28 Jan 2011 20:38:43 -0600 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: Steve Rittenberg Subject: Fwd: Please pay for your 1960 Nu Card Baseball Hi-Lites #60 Ruth EX+ Could someone look at the link to this card below and tell me if it looks like a reprint?
