Some pretty good cards at the show...managed to hit the t207 list 5 times, picked up a p2 walter johnson, nabbed one of the last 5 DiamondStars I needed (Medwick), Picked up Bowmans and Play Balls! from the OBC crew, a few 1916 zeenuts, a t202 joe jackson ;-) and what I thought might bea w574 team issue billy southworth. It looks like a team issue photo, butno stats on the back...anybody seen these before? Pretty good day, but really today was just a skimming day...I'll get to dig in fri-sun...tomorrow will be a long day at work though. Looking forward to more festivities. ================= Date: Thu, 5 Aug 2010 00:48:54 EDT To: OBC-National@yahoogroups.com From: ChicoD1@aol.com Subject: Early returns at the National Well quite a first day here at the show. Caught up with Kent Goto, Richard Dingman, Mike Rich, Jeff Delott, Bob Donaldson, Ken Morganti, Mac Wubben,Ed Schott, Steve Rittenberg (yesterday)... Show doesn't look too bad, it is smaller than the ones in Cleveland and Chicago. Makes for less walking. Great thing is the dealer list-- easy to find our "guys" and I have a feeling we will be doing our most business with our OBC friendly dealers. Kurt has already put aside a box for our as yet undertermined place for the swap on Saturday. Early thanks to Kent who almost destroyed my sup list, Mike Rich who further dented it, Bob Donaldson and Jeff Delott who scored a some bulls-eyes on my main list. I did manage to get myself a few 52B hits and scored 2 big ones on the 58s. For those here, I've updated my sup list. The main list hasn't been updated yet, but I have the hits marked off with me. Many o fyou have expereinced the OBC spirit and sense of family, by e-mail or through the mail, even abyphone, but a gathering is totally different. A great example was Dominic Morganti getting a chance to meet 15 of his uncles this trip. Another aspect is the museum like nature of the National. You can see things there, you have only heard or read about. A few of us were trying to determine the selling prices of what was in the room, and figured somewhere between $100 - $200 million dollars. Unfortunately, grading, especially of prewar cards is accelerating. One small benefit of that is that you do nothave to ask, "What set is that from?", as they are labelled. For me, a major draw is the opportunity to acquire cards I am looking for, or more importantly, cards I did NOT know I was looking for. This show wasquite different for me, in that I bought a number (11) of complete sets. Four were odd prewar sports sets, such as 1925 Buguslavsky Sports Records (oldest complete set I now own) and 1934 Gallaher Champions (both versions of with and without names on the front). I actually had some single cards from the sets, but thought it was best to buy the complete sets, at about $1a card. I also love the retro type sets and picked up a few TCMA/Renata Galasso sets. I did get some UV era sets, of 1981-1983 Berenson's Hartford Jai-Alai sets. No collection is complete without Jai-Alai cards! I wonderhow many different sports are represented in my collection. I would assume over 100 by now. A nice pick up was the 1974 Topps BB Stamp sheets set. I was also able to finish 2 other sets, 1938 Churchman's Boxing and 1974 Fleer Basketball The Shots. Big pick ups included 1951 Bowman BB Mays for 3%of book, to get me down to Mantle only, 1948 Topps Magic Photo of Gehrig, an upgrade 1948 Leaf DiMaggio and a 1933 Delong. I knocked off 14 1964 Wheaties FB stamps to get down to 5. Got either a type card or my 2nd (and more) cards to 12 different sets. For those that thought I was already working on every set known to man, that may surprise you. A couple sets reached or passed the 1/2 way mark, including 1911 T-201 Mecca Double Folders (anyone have any to swap? I have a few dupes), 1960 Nu Card Hi Lites and 1963 Stat Back Exhibits (seems like I need all of the HOFers). At previous National's John Scott Gray and I would have contests to see which of us could get hits to the most vintage sets. This year I barely hit 100, which is way down from previous years. As I complete sets, there are fewer for me to get hits to. All in all another successful National. After Atalntic City a few years back, I had said I would never fly into another National. One was a '33 Goudy John Ogden. You can see the card here: http://home.comcast.net/~seankatie/images/ogden33.jpg Now, being a Helmar collector (first run when they weren't so scarce) I know about the House of David baseball teams. So, I did some extensive research, and found nothing anywhere connecting Mr. Ogden to the House of David. I did find out cool stuff like, he won 191 games for the minor league Baltimore Orioles and the owner turned down $100,000 to sell him. Ogden said he was fine with it because he was making more money in the minors! Also, he started scouting while he was still playing (between starts) and continued for a grand total of 63 years in baseball. Signed 47 future major leaguers, (but not limited to) Carlton Fisk. Why would I mention that? Well, we attended Saturday nights game between the White Sox and the Tigers. We started off with a tailgate in the parking lot. The Michigan crew really came through with some great appetizers. No surprise. Seems everyone from Michigan is like that. We were lucky enough to catch the Blue Angels flying by quite a few times as the Chicago airand water show was taking place on Lake Michigan. What a great sight. The game itself saw the Tigers prevail with their .210 hitting catcher smacking a two run homer in the ninth to give the Tigers a 3-2 lead =96 which they held. Other than the ending, it was a well played game with good pitching and some great defense. Onto Sunday. I write it partly to thank OBCers who were there, and partly to give OBCerswho may not have ever attended a National, a glimpse of what it is like, especially from one who has not attended many. Be warned and read on at your Finally, 8 days after the final sport card changed hands and homes at the 2010 National Convention in Baltimore, I arrived home, having had to endure a week of work and travel the length and breadth of NYS in the meantime. Iwas dead exhausted on leaving Baltimore, and equally exhausted arriving home a week later. Only now, after a weekend of unloading, have I attained afaint measure of organization and relaxation after dragging my suitcase inside my home and digging out boxes and stacks and randowm piles of cards onto the dining room table. Only my 2nd National, it was almost as overwhelming as last year in Cleveland, though it felt a bit smaller. I at first put it down to a much smallerroom, but now think it is because I had a plan of attack for finding what I needed. And that plan is a result of OBC. I am a member of several other online groups, but nobody does the National like OBC! With lists of OBC-friendly dealers expecting me, a map of all the tables and where every dealer was located, and phone numbers for all attending OBC pairs of eyes, I felt I was ready for the show. Thus had OBC prepared me, but more was to come, as I waited at the door for other OBCers to arrive andhelp me with virtual VIP-status entry. Ah, yes, collecting the way it should Throughout the convention, I met and re-met more than a dozen OBCers, many of whom I rmembered from last year. Naturally, we exchanged pleasantries and cardboard, and I received recommendations on where to find what. Does life get any better for a collector? I arrived early every day and stayed late every day. After forgetting to eat lunch for 2 days, I prepared for the next day by buying a sandwich earlyin the morning. I promptly forgot it in the car, but not my wantlist. In5 days I had lunch once, and that time I had to force myself to take time away from all the diversions for mere sustenance. I had to work Friday evening (the price of getting 4 days off from my job) so I missed the ballgame, but had 2 other dinners out with OBCers and made the Saturday swap and pizza bash. This year I got to know several folks a bit better through room sharing - Mike Rich and Ron Perry - and several others who were more than gracious with conversation and advice. I want to thank all those I can remember who passed me cards: Kent Goto: =9253 B B&W LaPalme and Walker Cooper, and =9151B #312 Boston braves Mike Rich: =9253B B&W Sisler and Roe, =9274 McLain (leaving just the Schmidt card for the set), 2 =9270hi #s, and 5 =9272 hi #s. Jeff Delott: 3 =9272 hits. Peter Mead: =9264 crisp Koufax. Mac Wubben: =9259 Musial in unusually clean condition. Sean McGowan: 3 =9251 Topps hits, Kokos, Rosen and Dom D, and a =9151B. Bob Donaldson: a =9153B color Al Rosen. Steve Rittenberg: a =9268 Clemente, a half dozen =9254 World on Wheels, a couple =9272 high #s, a =9252 Spahn, and a ton of help for my =9170s 2nd sets. Sal Domino: who gets hero status for finding me a =9273 Schmidt at Bill Henderson=92s table, killing the set! Ron Perry: my 1st =9251 blue back. Ed Schott: a Brooklyn Bums pennant. And I want to give special thanks to Ken Morganti and family for providing space for the swap, and to Steve Rittenberg, Mike Rich, Sal Domino, Ed Schott and anyone else involved whose efforts I didn=92t see for coordinating the dealer list, dealer badges, OBC contact lists and refreshments for the swap, and for all things that make the National with OBC such a delight. For those who have not been, what was it like? For me, a devoted bargain box hunter, it was hours and hours of searching, and remarkably finding hits, through numerous boxes. Much time was saved by knowing where to go. I was less distracted this year by the incredibly extravagant displays, virtually complete shops, of everything and anything even vaguely sport-related that was everywhere to be found. I don't think even some established storeswere as well-stocked and crammed full of sport stuff as some of the booths. You could walk in them and not be able to see out. Just setting them upand breaking them down must have taken days. There were times when it was crowded and times when it was slow. The floors were hard, but chairs were to be found. I think some dealers were born with Becketts in their hands, and others were there for the first time. Some booths were as organized as a military campaign, and about as friendly looking, and others looked like all the items fell at once from the ceiling, and were never touched again. Other dealers seemed equally happy to just sit and chat as sell cards. Most dealers everywhere were friendly, and not too pushy. Perhaps this wasbecause I mostly spent time at explicitly OBC-friendly booths. Wearing anOBC hat, many dealers recognized me (us) and knew about what to expect. This was nice. Often they brought out their beater boxes for me, they had brought them knowing we would devour them. And I don't think they were disappointed. So far, my collecting is quite conservative and, some might say, unimaginative. Other OBCers more than made up for this, vying to see how many sets they could hit during the event. I ended up bringing home around 630 cards I did not have before, even more than I, a comfirmed cheapskate, hoped for, including some relatively big (for me) Topps tickets - a '60 Mantle, '52 Pafko, some older checklists, a start on '49 and '50 Bowmans and '54 World on Wheels sets, and a ton of upgrades and variations that many dealers don't bother to remove from their bargain boxes. It wasn't until mid-afternoon on Sunday, the last day, that I actually felt like I had seen enough, I was ready for a break. At least until next year. Finally, 8 days after the final sport card changedhands and homes at the National Convention in Baltimore, I arrived home, having had to endure a week work and travel the length and breadth of NYS in the meantime. I was dead exhausted on leaving Baltimore, and equally exhausted arriving home a week later. Only now, after a weekend of unloading, have I attained afaint of organization and relaxation after dragging my suitcase inside my home anddigging outboxes and stacks and randowm piles of cards onto the dining room Only my 2nd National, it was almost as overwhelming as last year in Cleveland, though it felt a bit smaller. I at first put it down to a much smaller but now think it is because I had a plan of attack for finding what I needed. And that plan is a result of OBC. I am a member of several other online but nobody does the National like OBC! With lists of OBC-friendly dealers expecting me, a map of all the tables and where every dealer was located, and phone numbers for all attending OBC pairs eyes, I felt I was ready for the show. Thus had OBC prepared me, but more to come, as I waited at the door for other OBCers to arrive and help me with virtual VIP-status entry. Ah, yes, collecting the way it should be! Throughout the convention, I met and re-met more than a dozen OBCers, many of whom I rmembered from last year. Naturally, we exchanged pleasantriesand cardboard, and I received recommendations on where to find what. Doeslife any better for a collector? I arrived early every day and stayed late every day. After forgettingto lunch for 2 days, I prepared for the next day by buying a sandwich early inthe morning. Ipromptly forgot it in the car, but not my wantlist. In 5 days I had lunch once, and that time I had to force myself to take time away from all the diversions for mere sustenance.I had to work Friday evening (the price of getting 4 days off from my job) so I missed the ballgame, but had 2 other dinners out with OBCers and made the Saturday swap and pizza bash. This year I got to know several folks a bit better through room sharing - Mike Rich andRon Perry - and several others who were more than gracious with conversation and I want to thank all those I can remember who passed me cards: Kent Goto: =E2=9953 B B&W LaPalme and Walker Cooper, and =E251B #312 Boston braves Mike Rich: =E2=9953B B&W Sisler and Roe, =E2=9974 McLain (leaving just the Schmidt card for the set), 2 =E2=9970hi #s, and 5 =E2=9972 hi #s. Jeff Delott: 3 =E2=9972 hits. Peter Mead: =E2=9964 crisp Koufax. Mac Wubben: =E2=9959 Musial in unusually clean condition. Sean McGowan: 3 =E2=9951 Topps hits, Kokos, Rosen and Dom D, and a =E251B. Bob Donaldson: a =E253B color Al Rosen. Steve Rittenberg: a =E2=9968 Clemente, a half dozen =E2=9954 World onWheels, a couple =E2=9972 high #s, a =E2=9952 Spahn, and a ton of help for my =E270s 2nd sets. Sal Domino: who gets hero status for finding me a =E2=9973 Schmidt at Bill Henderson=E2=99s table, killing the set! Ron Perry: my 1st =E2=9951 blue back. Ed Schott: a Brooklyn Bums pennant. AndI want to give special thanks toKen Morganti and family for providing for the swap, and to Steve Rittenberg, Mike Rich, Sal Domino, Ed Schott and anyone else involved whose efforts I didn=E2=99t see for coordinating the list, dealer badges, OBC contact lists and refreshments for the swap, and for all things that make the National with OBC such a delight. For those who have not been, what was it like? For me, a devoted bargain hunter, it was hours and hours of searching, and remarkably finding hits, through numerous boxes. Much time was saved by knowing where to go. I was less distracted this year by the incredibly extravagant displays, virtually complete shops,of everything and anything even vaguely sport-related that was everywhere to be found. I don't think even some established stores were as well-stocked and crammed full of sport stuff as some of the booths. You could walkin and not be able to see out. Just setting them up and breaking them down have taken days. There were times when it was crowded and times when it was slow. The floors were hard, but chairs were to be found. I think some dealers were born Becketts in their hands, and others were there for the first time. Some were as organized as a military campaign, and about as friendly looking, and others looked like all the items fell at once from the ceiling, and were never touched again. Other dealers seemed equally happy to just sit and chat as sell Most dealers everywhere were friendly, and not too pushy. Perhaps this because I mostly spent time at explicitly OBC-friendly booths. Wearing an OBC hat, many dealers recognized me (us) and knew about what to expect. This nice. Often they brought out their beater boxes for me, they had brought knowing we would devour them. And I don't think they were disappointed. far, my collecting is quite conservative and, some might say, unimaginative.Other OBCers more than made up for this, vying tosee how many sets they could hit during the event. I ended up bringing home around 630 cards I did not have before, even more than I, a comfirmed cheapskate, hoped for, including some relatively big (for Topps tickets - a '60 Mantle, '52 Pafko, some older checklists, a start on '49 and '50 Bowmans and '54 World on Wheels sets, and a ton of upgrades and variations that many dealers don't bother to remove from their bargain boxes. It wasn't until mid-afternoon on Sunday, the last day, that I actually feltlike I had seen enough, I was ready for a break. At least until next year. I noticed this offering on evilbay this morning. It appears that many of the  players whose names begin with the letter J have a variation in how the J is displayed.  the bottom loop either appears straight up or angled to the left of the card.
Take a look and let me know if you think this is a variation--it also appears that there is a background color variation associated with this.

I went to see a urologist Tuesday about my frequent urinary tract infections. That was probably one of the best things I could have done! I have heard about a suprapubic catheter -- that is where they create a hole into your bladder from a few inches beneath your belly button, thus allowing you to urinate. As the majority of you know, I became paralyzed in June of 2007 from the upper chest down. Unfortunately, this also inhibited mefrom being able to urinate through my penis naturally. Since then, I have had a foley catheter running through my urethra, down my penis, and into mybladder. Thank the Lord Almighty that I cannot feel this. If you have thistype of catheter inside of you long enough, every man's worst nightmare will happen and your penis will eventually tear open. Luckily, that has not happened to me yet. From what I have previously read about suprapubic catheters, they are capable of reducing the amount of urinary tract infections that you can receive by 85% or more. Since I have had the Foley catheter inside of me, I haveliterally had a urinary tract infection the entire time -- which is definitely not good for you to begin with, but since I have had diabetes my entire 30 years of existence, the risk of kidney failure is very high. The thought of going on dialysis has plagued me every day for the last three years. Anyhow, I went to see the urologist yesterday with the thought of gettingone of these suprapubic catheters. I pitched the idea to him, and he told me that infections will still be a problem. That was somewhat of a let down, but I know for a fact that the likelihood of getting one is very much less with this type of catheter. He was actually acting as if he did not want to go through with the procedure, as if it were a waste of both of our time. Then I told him straight up that I would like to be able to keep and use my manhood. This must have made the urologist feel sympathetic because immediately after that he took a quick peek at my junk to make sure that there were no tears, and quickly said "okay, I can do it". That completely made my year. He did not waste any time either. He sent me directly to the hospital that day in order to get blood work to ensure that my kidneys are in good operable condition and also to get x-rayed and have an ultrasound done tomake sure that I do not have any kidney stones. Surprisingly it is actually a walk in appointment! I do not have to be hospitalized whatsoever! My pre operation is a week from tomorrow, and the actual surgery is on Monday the 30th! I've taken the stormtrooper boot off for the night, which is way more comfortable but I have to be very careful not to touch the ground with my foot. I consider myself a writer as well as a pastor. I write monthly email updates for our ministry that could accurately be described as rambles. A certain group of people really like them, and a certain group never reads a word of them, thought they don't mention it to me. The joy of email=97or posting to a server=97is that you can read if you want to and ignore it if you don't and no one is put out either way. I'm about to file my 54 Bowman Willie Mays and Whitey Ford into my set, which now is within 16 cards of completion and now has the two biggest cards, Mantle and Mays. A dealer in town, a very knowledgeable man with an amazing collection that rivals some of yours, told me to get the Mantles and Mays and Aarons, because they would always hold their value. Unfortunately, he closed his shop back in '02, and I'd only known about it for 9 months or so. Honestly, I think I made a pain of myself, as I was just getting back into collecting and was quickly obsessed with the hobby. Imagine what that would be like. I have thanked each of you who participated in this onslaught on my collection in general and my 54B's specifically. I'd like to take a moment to thank ALL of you, OBC as a whole, and each of you who have been so generous to me. When I joined this group=97and that means after I'd had successful trades with the likes of Cap, Rick Johnson, and Mark Holland=97I owned exactly 150 cards from the 50s and 60s. My 54B set now sits at 211 and the mail lately has been veddy veddy good to me, so who knows what tomorrow will bring? The act of generosity to let me into the group, ignorant and with my fledgling collection, was itself a great gift. A while back, a Rambling went around about how far along people were in the "Topps Quest," 1952-1980. Aaron figured it was about 15,000 cars. At that time, I tallied my cards and figured out that I was about 6,000 cards down and 9,000 to go...but I also had received approximately 5,000 cards from members of OBC. I considered throwing in my two cents then, but decided to wait until I could express properly my appreciation for such unfounded and flabbergasting generosity. Well, now that I'm on the receiving end of another binge of giving, this strikes me as the I'm sure most of us feel that we collect on a limited budget and wish we had a little more to splurge on these cards we enjoy so much, both for ourselves and for others. I know talking about money is about as dicey as talking religion or politics (I prayed for Obama today=97there, got 'em both), but I'll just say that I am collecting on a very modest income from which we already have many commitments and obligations. Simply put, I could never have afforded to have this collection, even in the most Tipton Mint, without you guys. I told John Stamper I thought the SCD price for the 54B Mays card was roughly equal to the 78 T set (when expressing how outrageous this conspiracy was), but in fact, the Mays card is approximately DOUBLE the cost of my first set in equivalent condition*. I try really hard to hit folks back and come out even in spirit, if not in dollars. I know many of you don't expect return fire (Okay, I know Lynn doesn't) and I apologize if I have offended any of you who thought it reasonable to expect more equitable or prompt return than I have managed (but I AM going to hit you someday, Grant Rainsley!). But for what it's worth, thank you for all these amazing cards and the joy and excitement they've brought me. Thanks for befriending me and letting me connect with people who share this slightly absurd passion, which is so much more enjoyable to pursue with a group. Thanks for Mantles and Mays and Aarons and Mike Kekiches and Tom Griffins and Rodney Clarks. Thanks for ganging up on me to help me through this hard stretch. I foolishly keep looking at Hank Aaron rookie cards on Ebay and card shop websites -- the really shot ones go for around $300. Sheeshhh....but I do have the Williams cards and the Kaline, so I'm not totally weak on the star I had to laugh when I read Rob Gioia's "15 and a half hours" time difference from Halifax to British Columbia. Here in the PacNorwest a lot of us listen to Canadian stations for various types of music, and the CBC broadcasters ALWAYS say the time in half hour increments for Nova Scotia. I would assume the folks in Nova Scotia KNOW the time there --- why would the rest of the CBC listeners give a rat's ass that Nova Scotia is a half hour different FROM EVERYONE ELSE?! I mean, Grant practically lives on the Continental Ice Shelf -- even he doesn't get half hour time increments. And anyway, everyone knows that time on Blood Island is measured in corpuscles lost, not minutes... (A milestone ramble) As I move to only 3 days short of the ripeold age of 50 (and a well-preserved 50 at that - scotch is a marvellous preservative), I thought it would be fun look back at my archive want lists to see how I'vemade out these past 10years. August 2000 was a fairly busy time in my life. Maureen and I were just celebrating our 2nd wedding anniversary. We werestarting to make seriousplans to move out of my old apartment and into our own home. My mom had just suffered a debilitating stroke which would have a profound effect on all our lives for the next 8 years. I was back in regular contact with my dad in Arizonaafter anestrangement of 25years. Due to some changes in management structure, I was going through a tricky and difficult time at work. Through all this though,I was having fun and getting enjoyment outof old cardboard. I had been a member of OBC for just over 2 years at that point. My one and only trip toThe National had occurred the previous year, where I met many OBCers most of whomremain active, others not. I'd had an early taste of OBC generosity thanks to Ken Morganti - Ken: "You're a Tigers fan, right?" Me: "Yes" Ken: "You'll need this in that case", handing over a beautiful '54T Al Kaline RCat the Swap Meet. A day later, Mark Atnip dealt my Tigers collection another amazing blow, presenting me with my first - and as yet only - vintage Ty Cobb, 1926 W512 strip card. In the 10 years since those heady days, I've managed to attend one more OBC function, a Vegas get together a few yearsback (the highlight of that trip being Joshua Levine's now-legendary purchase of a complete 1941PB set for a ridiculously low sum of money)and have had the opportunity to meet and host several OBCers right here in Scotland. Not bad for longest-standing member of OBCs International Division! It's also been 10 years of pretty intense activity on the cardboard front. Thanks to a combinationof OBC, ebay, dealers, and friends and relatives,I've watched my small collection grow and mature into something that I get a tonof pleasure out of and something which I hope will provide a legacy for the youngsters in my family in years to come(let's face it guys, despite our outlook the monetary value of our collections can't be overlooked). In 2000, I was concentrating very much on reconstructing the sets that I had collected as a kid growing up in Detroit, these being the 1966-1972 Topps sets. I'd completed my first vintage set - 1973T - at the previous year's National, and now was moving full bore at the others. I was pretty close on most, with only 21 1969Ts remaining and 15 1971Ts to go. That '71 set had taken a huge boost early in my OBC career thanks to a large lot from a guy the old-timers will remember - old JAMO himself, Jim Montgomery. The 1966T set hadn't even reached the halfway point yet, with only 235 cards gathered. Although a lower priority, the 1974-1985 Topps sets were all well on their way to completionas well. Most interestingly, I hadn't yet started on the 1960, 1961, 1963, 1964 1965 sets, and had only just begun to work on 1962T (only 99 cards in at that point!). Ten years of frenzied activity (well, as frenzied as one can get when collecting from 3000 miles away!) has seen 20 sets completed, including my 1960 birthyear set. 1964T and 1965T are down to 6 and 1 to go respectively, while '61, '62, '63, '66 and '67 are all at least 92% complete (bloody high numbers are still killin' me!). In addition, I've also made good early forays into the 1957-1959 sets, mostly thanks to OBC contributions. Also on the baseball front, my specific collections - Detroit Tigers and Bobby Thomson cards - have both made huge leaps. I've added well over 200 vintage Tigers cards - as well as several thousand UV issues - to my collection which now runs to 8 full binders. My Thomson collection took a huge boost thanks to the receipt of several of his vintage cards from author Josh Prager ("The Echoing Green") as a thank you for helping him with some local research forhis book. The latest addition to the collection came just a few weeks back careof Lynn Miller who upgraded my '52T Thomson - still the only '52T high number in whole collection. Ten years back, I'd hardly contemplated collecting anything other than baseball cards, My old wantlist reveals, however, that I was just setting out on the hockey road, trying to make a start on sets from 1968 to 1972. Since that time, I've built up a comprehesive Red Wings only binder (still a LOAD of old cards nail on that front, though!), completed the 1971/72T set, got down to a handful on 1970/71T and 1972/73T, and stand 1 card away from 1969/70T. I've only just recently start working on the 1968/69T set in earnest. The OPC sets from those years are of course a different animal, but I've made some good inroads into them too. My star acquisitions on the hockey front? A 52/53P Ted Lindsay (Thanks to Steve Rittenberg for that one!), a 1960/61P Gordie Howe, and a 1954/55T Terry Like hockey, football was just a distant speck on the horizon in 2000, but in order to give me a wider range to attack, I added the 1969-1972 sets to my list, as well as a specialist Detroit Lions list (do you see a pattern here?). The 1969 and 1970 sets are now hovering at just under 90% completion. The 1972 set is holding at just 70%, mainly due to those unobtainable high numbers. The 1971T set, however, is only a single card away from completion - #156 Terry Bradshaw RC, which means that I would hope to complete my first vintage football setvery In additon to cards, I've also added a myriad of other items to my collection this past decade - books, yearbooks, balls, gloves, bats........ I've met and chatted with Bobby Thomson, and I've played golf with one of the heores of my childhood, former Tigers centerfielder Mickey Stanley. I've attended games at the Tigers new home and watched them reach a World Series, and sadly, I've seen the demolition of Tiger Stadium, the old ballpark that holds so many wonderful memories for me. On a personal front, I've enjoyed moving and settling intoa new home with my wife Maureen, watched our niece Jenny (who was born just afew weeks before we got married) grow up into a fun, intelligent, energetic young teenager, and travelled to several countries including South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, and Germany (not to mention the US and Canada). Its also been a decade during which I lost both of my parents. I miss them both dearly. I'm looking forward to seeing what the next 10 years of collecting has in store for me. I hope to be able to get to at least another National (2011, I hope), and to complete my 1960's sets (although I'm not holding out too much hope for that 1967 set). One guy I definitely have to put in a word for is my good friend in Wisconsin, Bill Ashton, for his incredible generosity in acting as my "middleman" for auction wins and dealer purchases. My collection would be considerably lighter at the moment without Bill's efforts. Thanks, buddy!! Being a member of OBC has enhanced my love of collecting not only through the passing on of cardboard, but also through the friendships, cameraderie, andfun we all have. I still get an amazing thrill out of receiving a package in the mail. In fact, as I write this I've just received a message from our receptionist here in the office telling me that there are 2 envelopes for me (she always gives me a heads-up whenever I receive anything from the States). wonder what they could be? Looks genuine enough in the listing. I can see why you went for it. What gives it away as a counterfeit? Interestingly, the has another negative feedback for selling a fake. The seller's listing makes big play about his willingness to refund buyers if anything is wrong or misrepresented. I hope he lives up to that. If not, I've heard that the process of recouping your loss via ebay/Paypal can be long and drawn out. Be sure you keep records of all your correspondence. Open up a case through eBay - a SNAD (significantly not asdescribed) should do the trick nicely. Plenty of scumbag buyers have stolen from legit sellers, but if this guy is knowingly passing off fakes, then the rules in place will actually benefit the good guys for once. You will have to send the card back (in your dime, unfortunately), and when you do, make sure you do it with delivery confirmation. I think you have to provide the delivery confirmation number at some point to have the case closed, butif you go through the steps you shouldn't have any problems. That's assuming the seller won't play ball with you, of course. He may very well be a stand up guy and take care of you instantly.
