It is not a T206, it is from another set from the same era, T213. As Josh noted, this is a set I'm nearly complete on (need 9 variations) - I've been working on it for over 10 years. What's cool about this set is since it was issued over three years, they took great pains to update the team changes for the various players. There'sa base set of around 95 or so, but when you add in team changes, the checklist grows to 188 cards (although I think three don't exist). Chase is one of the players with team changes - Linda, your Buffalo Fed card is from the1914 and 1915 printings. In 1916, the three different Chase poses were allreissued with Chicago. Additionally, Chase is one of three players with six different cards in the set - three poses with Buffalo and three with Chicago. Bender and Wiltse are the other two (they each have two poses with three different teams). All the poses are straight out of T206, but the teams include the AL, NL, Federal League, PCL (three cards including two of FrankChance with LA) and a great variety of minor league clubs. The team updates present the greatest challenge in this set - generally the cards issued in 1914 are the "easiest" to obtain. Cards issued only in either 1915 or 1916 are significantly tougher (e.g., any Chase card with Chicago). I've been slowly writing an article on this set for Old Cardboard for a couple years that I ought to try and finish. ================= Date: Sat, 03 Jul 2010 16:22:07 -0000 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: "Tom Housley" Subject: Some 1970 Kellogg's from a dealer - 50 cents each Don't want to step on any toes - but I've purchased from this dealer before, and I had good experiences. I was looking at the roster for the National which starts 1 month from today, and it appears this will be the smallest gathering of OBCers at a National that I plan on attending. I think there are 12 of us, as of now, and 1 or 2 of those will not even be able to make the swap. Red Sox nation appears to be the most well represented, with a few NYers thrown in. While Mac is attending and Peter for a day or 2, the Baltimore, DC, VA area is not knocking the doors down. I will be meeting 3 or so OBCers for the first time, but was hoping for a lot more. I am interested to see how much cardboardchanges hands at the swap, as Rittenberg and Morganti, have extremely tough wantlists. Some of the others, are only slightly easier (my lists probably fall into 1 of the 2 groups above). I try to make sure I have at least something for everyone I know will be attending (not always possible). I still need Sal to post a wantlist. The dilemma then becomes, if I only havea card or 2 for someone pulled, do I give it to them when I see them, possbly as early as Wednesday or wait until the Saturday swap? If I wait, theymay buy what I have for them. If I wait, they are spending money they need not spend and then I have nothing for them. If I give it to them when I see them, then I have nothing for them at the swap. The tougher the list, the worse the dilemma. I hope more will try and make it. Her dad is a sports guy, including working as a tennis coach/pro, but she asks me to take her at least once a year. Late on Friday, I was able to score 4 tickets to that nite's game. I called my niece, who canceled going to the ovies with her friends to go to a Tigers game with her uncle. I told her she could invite a friend or 2, although it was very shortnotice. She had no luck, so at the last moment, I called my parents. My dad is celebrating his 80th birthday next month and my mom does not walk real well. I was pleasantly surprised when they decided to go. I got up as close to the stadium as I could and dropped them off and then went and parked. I still beat them to the seats, which tells you how slow mom moves, even with a wheel chair escort to the section. I had the company tickets, which put us in row 22, right behind the plate. My mom mentioned that it was her first time to Comerica, which opened in 2000, and said it was her first game in probably 20 years. My mom is abig Tigers fan, so I was surprised by this. When I was a kid, my parents and I went to the games frequently. Mom was impressed with the seats and said they were probably the best seats she everhad for a game. The weather was perfect, 78 degrees at game time, dropping only a couple degrees during the nite. The Tigers won 7 -1, andperfect view for the post game fireworks. While I do go out to eat with my folks, we rarely go somewhere as a group. My mother could not stop commenting how it was such a perfect nite. I know this meant a lot to my folks and for a lst minute thing, it is something they will remember for a while. Baseball can still bring the family together. My niece especially liked the fireworks, even though she did not know about them, until I told her, near the end of the game. So, if you are interested in any of these, let me know and I'll check you wantlists. ================= Date: Mon, 5 Jul 2010 02:50:34 +0000 (UTC) To: mikesportsfan From: talbot1@comcast.net Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] A family outing to a Tigers game Thanks Mike for the family story, It reminds me of our annual trip to the ballpark on Polish-American night. Wondering if you thought there were apparent reasons (bad decisions from owner/management, shallow talent pool, pooron-field managing, unexpected injuries, ???) that were causing it. Thinking like "what I would do if I owned the team" kind of discussion. Not trying to put anyone down. I apologize if I stepped on your toes. ================= To: "Brian Lindholme" , Date: Sun, 11 Jul 2010 13:01:55 -0700 From: "Brian Lindholme" Subject: Re: RE: [OBC-Ramblings] Going Green on Red White and Blue Day!! I=E2=99m SURE the Family Toad cc=E2=99d me on this directly for a good reason=E2=A6=E2=A6.not that I like to talk about the woodies or anything, or that I am old. But yes, I vividly remember the year, it was a bad one for me, spent a good portion of it in hospital. It was close, (I heard later), but I recall on one occasion my Dad brought an entire box of the 7th Series to the hospital to try to keep my morale up. There=E2=99s no way they could have afforded that back then, but its seems to have worked, I=E2=99m still here. I couldn=E2=99t throw them against walls like I was doing with the earlier Series, and subsequently after being opened theywent right into storage, which accounts for why my high #=E2=99s are inthe best condition of the whole set. As for the woodies=E2=A6..as a kid of 11 back then, I was savvy enough to realize that cards (most anyways) came in different Series, so as soon asSeries 1 was complete, I watched for the change that indicated Series 2 was out, or else let some other kid buy a pack and see who he got, and go after all of the new ones. But I almost went directly from Series 1 to Series3. When I started doing inventory of all the treasures I managed to retainin spite of Mom, I realized that the 2nd series was almost not there=E2=A6=E2=A6just a few, none of the Ruth cards. Long ago I talked to Tiger Dave about this, and he was of the opinion that the 2nd series was never sold in Vancouver, but I beg to differ. I remember getting the GT of Mr. Kaline out of a pack when I saw the first shipment of series 2 come in to PlazaGrocery, and thinking what a lousy looking card it was, and I would have gotten it as soon as the new cards were available. So=E2=A6my humble opinion is that the early run had some lousy prints=E2=A6.. and they corrected it after a short while, with either new poses/coloration etc., but unless they already had later Series printed, I can=E2=99t account for the pose variations with the Buhl and Tasby, let alone the Checklists. I doubt very much that there would have been any type of recall back then for a faulty product. Happy to hear opinions from anyone else who is willing to admit they are asold as I am. Wow. What a great time I had on Saturday - and if I had only managed to get there a couple of hours earlier - it would have been even better! I am speaking about the Frank & Son collectable show in City Of Industry, CA. I did not manage to make it by 9 (as did Josh, Eric, Lynn and Rich - actually Lynn and Rich were there around 7ish...) so I missed out on a lot of the fun - but I did manage to arrive just after 11. I wandered the aisles for a few and then decided to break down and call Lynn and ask where they were - row 200 half way down he said. As soon as I found my OBC friends I was greeted and without much pause for a breath I was bombarded by cardboard. Lynn passed me an handful - first, one 1950 Bowman that was on my list as a Horizontal - but was not HOR - so I handed that one back - but there were many more to look at and enjoy. A couple more 50 Bowman that were HORIZONTALS of Earl Torgeson and Jack Kramer (lovely cards - in amazing shape!) and a 55 Bowman of Joe Coleman. Then I was passed an envelope from Eric - I didn't have time to look at that before Eric left - but when I did I found it way cool! There were discs from the 70ies with backs that I did not have in my collection -- Don Sutton and Andy Messersmith - with Buckmans printed on the back -- and a 83 Police of a Dodger prospect Larry White and also a Pee Wee Reese on a Baseball legends card - some kind of wonderful decal or trans-o-gram from the 80's that included Pedro Guerrero as well - and an amazing 1974 TCMA set that shows ALL the 1890 Dodger team (first year for those dodgers) in their street clothes and with wonderful write ups on the back (I will be reading those throughout the week...). In the mean time Lynn was handing me more cards - "See if you need any of these." He had picked them up earlier for me... 1951 Bowman's of Pete Castiglione, Charlie Dressen and high number George Metkovish! Not long after the first two hand offs Rich Neissen forked over a great Fleer card from 1972 for the set I am putting together - Baseball's Famous Feats - this one was of Chuck Klein. So - I stood in the aisle - trying to look through and sort these cards that kept being shoved into my hands and failing miserably -- then before I knew it - everyone except Josh and I were gone... Baby sitting duty and the long drive back to Vegas being the reason... Joshua and I had a wonderful lunch and then parted company close to three. As I drove away I hoped I would be able to meet him (and maybe a few others) at this Larry & Sons show in the future. One of my favorite old, beat up, cards dealers was there, Paul Markoe, and I didn't even have time to look at his stuff or buy anything. It has been a few years since I met up with OBCers (except Josh) - let alone go to a card show with them - it was refreshing and wonderful and I hope to do it again -- soon! Paul always looks for oddball Phillies and pre-war stuff for me and he did not disappoint. I had not seen him in nearly 2 1/2 years and yet I spent over $100 at his table buying6 Redman w. tabs (incl. 2 Ashburns and 2 Roberts), 3 mid-'60s bazookas, a '55 Bowman, and a '62 green tint...all better than usual OBC condition. I went to go buy supplies and left the guys at the table...when I got back they had made purchases and we agreed to walk around a bit and meet up for a picture (you saw it in Lynn's post) before we left. As I was walking I turned a corner and saw a group of '60s cards with rubberbands around them lyingin the aisle!! I was amazed. I had not seen rubberbanded cards in years. At first I thought it was some kind of OBC joke but as I got closer to it I noticed a dealer with the messiest area ever that had three big boxes of atthe bottom of his area with rubberbanded cards. Each little pack containedbetween 6-12 cards and were separated by decade from the late '50s to the mid-80s. I called Lynn and the guys came running. We all ended up filling our dups boxes. For my $8 I bought Lynn a card, me a mid '70s tough Phillie TCMA card, '77 Cloth sticker of Carlton, and 7 packs of cards. In my packs there was one '58, one '59, 12 '60s (including a high number), 1 '61, 5 '64s, and 7 '66s. Great dealer in his '80s too with lots of stories. About this time Peter arrived and was greeted. Took our picture and then the Vegas boys and Erik left. Peter and I had a nice lunch after some interesting sightseeing in Colima, CA. When I got home, I finally opened the packages from Lynn and Erik that werehanded to me including some '53 Topps, '55 Bowmans, and a bunch of mid '50s and '60s Phillies. Thanks so much for the cards but BIGGER thanks for thewonderful time. Looking forward to another outing. ================= Date: Thu, 15 Jul 2010 10:37:18 -0400 To: obc ramblings From: Matthew Glidden Subject: Negro League stamps dedicated today! Stopped by a small card shop in my home town and picked up a few things--58 Aaron with yellow letters (is it his name or the team's name that is in yellow?), 58 Spahn, Drysdale and Mathews.  All four of these have some back damage--but I paid all of $10 for them.  The last three will probably be at the National swap unless someone really needs them now.
The question--the shop owner has a boxed set in mint (or at least really nice) condition of the 1950 Callahan set--but it appeared to be missing the Happy Chandler card (which if my memory serves me right is the toughest short print).  it did have the two HOF cards--all were high gloss in a great condition original box.  Any thoughts on what might be a fair price for this neat piece?  The seller is asking $300.

Hi guys, I recently bought $50 in cards from 7th Inning Stretch via their Beckett storefront, mostly minor league singles (#5s). Two of the cards turned out to be not #5s, but instead were mis-numbered. (Their stock page used alphabetical numbering instead of the set's actual numbers on the back.) I've since sent 3 emails asking for an exchange for the "real" #5s from the same set. The first 2 got quick (if unhelpful) replies from Jim Blinkhorn. It's been a couple weeks without response on the 3rd. Given that it's their numbering mistake, it'd be nice to see more willingness to swap for the right cards. Any OBCers have good or bad experiences with these guys? They seem like a big dealer, so while my $2 cards probably don't seem worth the effort, it might just be a misunderstanding. ================= Date: Fri, 16 Jul 2010 07:48:50 -0700 (PDT) To: OBC Ramblings From: Glenn Codere Subject: Good auction day!! Mike Rich and Ron Perry drove over from Michigan, and Gary Mandellwas there as well. When I saw Gary, he handed over an envelope for me that I will cover in the thanks server. We all had a great time walking the aisles and searching for some bargains. Uncle Dick's table had some great buys in the $2 box, and Bob from St. Louis had a few boxes marked OBC 90% off. It's always fun to spend some time going through those types of boxes, looking for the "gems". I know Ron found quite a few in those boxes, and it was great to see Mike kill that cricket set. Everyone helped me out a bit, whether it was looking for a Blackhawks celebration picture (found), or a 1960 Mantle all-star (Also found). That Mantle killed the set for me. It's been the last card needed for the 1960 set for over 2 years. It feels great to finally put that set to rest. I was also able to kill my 1978 OPC set. I must say, I searched pretty hard for some OPC, but the 78 Yountreally just popped out in front of me. I was about to sit and look through a $1 bargain box of 50's Bowman football. The Yount was sitting on top of the row. I picked it up just to take a look, flipped it over, and low and behold, it was the Yount I needed! Sweet. Two sets killed in one show.I picked up a number of Bowman football, all Bears. I am going to be adding some Bears team sets to the list. I left straight from work Friday nite and picked up Ron at his sister in law's house outside of Lansing and we continued on to Chicago. Show started at 9:30 and we were in the show at 9:45. Saw TJ and Gary in short order. We decided to go our seperate ways and meet back at Kevin Savage's table around noon. The morning treated me very well, in that I got the last 2 1948 Bowman FB shortprints from JD Heckelthorn, to complete that set. Later I was at AJ Firestone's table aka Ty's Cards, who specializes in football. Gary Mandell and I have bought lots of Coke FB caps from AJ over theyears. I did not get any caps this time, but AJ had some stcks of cards, including other than FB, for $5 each or 5 for $20, no further discounts. I was able to pick out 15 cards, including 7 1947 Tip Top Bread cards, 2 1934College FB Rivalry matchbooks, including Michigan v Ohio State (I now have5 of 12 in this set), a 1952 Berk Ross, 1963 Bazooka ATG Connie Mack, 21924 Dominion Athletic Stars (since I already had 1, this is another set I am now collecting) and as TJ mentioned, the last 1938 Player's Cricketeer cardI needed to complete that set. I beleive Glenn Codere got me started on this set and now it is complete. What were the odds of finding any of thesein random stacks and to find the last 1 I needed to complete the set??? Iwas almost happier to finish that set, than the 1948 Bowman FB. Short time later we all met up for a quick lunch break. Then it was back to work. Found a table that had some very nice prewar and vintage in boxes. I was able to pick up 2 1934-6 Diamond Starhigh numbers. This gets me down to 4 high numbers and 6 low #s to complete a base set. I got 2 1938 Goudeys, which gets me just passed 1/2 way (I now need 23 of 48) on my weakest Goudey set. Add to that the last 1941 Double Play card (#149-150), a 1949 Bowman hi #, a 1948 Leaf FB hi # (these are quite tough) and a 1939 Playball clown prince of BB, Al Schact, and it was a nice pick up. A short time later I saw a 1953 Bowman FB YA Tittle that has been a high priority card for me fora few years now. It completes yet anther Bowman FB set, getting me down to just 3 1952 Bowman FB large rare shortprints to finish that run. Later on I was back with JD Heclelthorn and bought groups of 10 1967 Topps Pirate stickers and 9 1955 Armour BB coins. That also turned both of those lists from have lists to wantlists. Other show pick ups included my 2nd 1960 Cardinals Myrose FB card, for another set to work on and a type card of 1930 Blue Ribbon Malt Cubs (this had to be looked up, as I was not familiar with the set at all). Red Mans with tabs, Salada BB & FB coins (finished a Lions team set), variation cards, Topps checklists from 1956 & 1957, a few 1964Topps Tatoos, of Koufax, Mays & Billy Williams, 1963 Stat Back Exhibit anda 1958 Topps YL Aaron, made for a surprisingly effective show. I believe 62 hits covering 26 sets, completing 3 sets, a type card, 2 sets getting my2 or more cards, to "officially" be collecting them, 3 sets crossing the 1/2 way mark, and 2 sets to the 10 and under list. Great to see TJ & Gary and thanks to Ron for encouraging me to attend. Considering Chicago has 3 shows like this a year, I would recommend to others to try and make it. Gary indicates the next one is the weekend before Thanksgiving. I am having surgery tomorrow (Tuesday) to reattach a tendon that snapped on my left foot (no, it wasn't heroic or glorious--I was just standing, talking to my wife). I will be in a cast for at least 6 weeks, am not supposed to put any weight on it, and 3 months until I can do any activity; the doctor told me not to leave the house at all for the first two weeks. My recent sending activity, which is my version of a flurry (modest as it was) is likely to be the last for a bit. However, feel free to hit me, as I will certainly appreciate any morale boosts, and I will keep track for when I'm able to return fire again. I have several guys I have been trying to hit for a long time--Grant Rainsley, I'm thinking of you--and I will eventually hit you all back with something. I'm nothing if not stubborn. A quick ramble on my 54 Bowman pursuit: I really didn't picture aiming at a fifties set any time soon when I joined OBC. I was quite happy to make progress on the 70s sets, kill off 74, 76 and 77, and nudge along the 69s, while getting one or two at a time on those older sets. But there's something magical about the 54Bs for me. It really took me by surprise. As the recent comment went, I AM excited about getting the 54 Bowman A's back-up second baseman! I like all the Bowman sets, and I think the 53s and 54s have the best look. So I compared those two and decided completing this set was much more realistic. Scoring the Tipton Mantle was a huge step, and I have Berra and Rizzuto, plus some of the lower priced stars. I'm still amazed at how quickly I've made progress...but of course now I'm getting down to some of the more difficult cards and have most of the pricier ones to go. The Mays is my next challenge...wish I were going to the National to shop around for one. (Anyone want to be my proxy shopper?) Big thanks to everyone who has helped me along, especially Bob Morganti with the Feller card. Two confessions: I am both collecting the variations AND trying to get this set in decent condition. Yes, I said I am not interested in variations, and generally speaking, that's still true. But once I got excited about this set, I started noticing that I HAD a few of the variations, and then some dangerous little voice in the back of my head said, "Wouldn't it be cool to have the WHOLE set?" Sigh. As for condition, I'm shooting for about VG-EX to EX. I don't expect to upgrade my Mantle (though it would be fun), I'm thrilled to be filling the slots with any condition, and I've got a LONG way to go with upgrades. We'll see if I'm still excited to upgrade if and when I actually complete it, and I won't even post my upgrade list until I get the whole set done. But right now, my long-term goal is for this to be my special set, among all my beautiful Tiptons. So if you send me half a 54 Bowman I still need, I'll rejoice...and if I ever get a nicer one, someone else in OBC will end up half a card richer! And that's one of my favorite things about this group. I've also found it really beneficial to work on this set because it has provided me with some decent dupes. I don't tend to have many with which I can hit most of you guys, so at least for the gang who are collecting 54Bs (and not down to just the Williams), I've finally had consistent ammo. Upgrading has increased the dupe supply even more, and when buying them in lots I'm happy if I need half the cards I get so I can distribute the rest. That's been fun. Final comment: I don't know if I'll ever manage to score the Williams, which to me is the one drawback of collecting this set (which would reverse into a major advantage of collecting this set, should I ever land #66a). It's way out of any price range I've indulged in so far. I'd be curious, for those of you who have it, how much it cost you. If that's an inappropriate OBC question, forgive me. Then again, it's not like I brought up religion. [:)] Please keep me in your thoughts and prayers as I undergo this surgery and especially as I recover. I don't want this to be a hard stretch for my kiddos, and I tend to get restless when I can't exercise. Peace and Joy to all of you, ================= Date: Tue, 20 Jul 2010 02:25:25 -0700 (PDT) To: OBC Ramblings From: Glenn Codere Subject: High numbers from the 1960's sets (a conversational ramble) Earlier this year, I knocked off the last non-hi# cards from my 1966T and 1967T wantlists. Earlier this week, Ipicked up a 1961T Spahn AS. These events got looking a bit more closely at how I'm doing with regard to those pesky high numbered cards. And the short answer is not as well as I would like!! Although I've been working on those sets for about 12 years now (until I joined OBC, I only concentrated on sets from 1968 on), I can't claim to have been terribly successful in tracking down the toughies - thanks, I guess, to a combination of a) being located in Scotland and b) being a generally cheap SOB. So, exactly how well (or badly) have things gone? First off, I would say that the sets that I consider to contain the tough high number series are: 1960, 1961, 1962, 1966, and 1967. To my mind, hi#s from 1963-1965 and 1968-1969 are reasonably available in terms of both quantity and price. Of the sets I'm looking at, I've fully completed one - 1960T. This was a project of particular interest to me as it was my birth year. I therefore concentrated very hard on it, and managed to finally finish italmost 2 yearsago. To honest, its probably the easiest of the tougher high series to finish off, with most cards readily available in a range of conditions and prices. The others posing some problems though. 1961T - High numbers (excluding variations): 65 - I have: 19 (29%). The '61T hi#s are for the most part readily available, but tough to win at auction without paying over the odds. I love the All Star subset, of which I've managed to find 7. My rule of thumb on these is to snap up anything I see at $5 or less, and worry about the big boys asI go. I don't know how many ebay bids I've on the 3 Tigers cards (#544 thomas, #553 Fischer and #580 KalineAS). I'd rank '61 the 2nd toughest out of the 5 sets I'm looking at. 1962T - High numbers:76 - I have:61 (80%). I've made terrific inroadson set, including a big and beautiful OBC contribution from Bob D'Angelo a while back. Most of the '62 hi's are fairly well available in most conditions, and would expect to hit this list fairly regularly over the months to come. The exceptions. of course, are the dreaded Rookie Paradesubset, all of whichgo ridiculous prices in almost any condition (Here's a real annoyance...back in early 1990s, before I joined OBC or had any concept of the scarcity of these, GAVE AWAY #591 and #598 to a guy in a comic shop here in Scotland.....and he didn't even seriously collect baseball cards!!). Despite this, I rank the '62s 4th toughest. 1966T - High numbers:76 - I have:31 (41%). I like the '66 high series. a sharpness and depth of color in the photography that seems to be better than the earlier 1966 cards. Most cards are available, although low grade examples seem fairly scarce. As with the '61s, I tend to snap up anything I spot at a price of $5 or less, but its rare that this happens. I might need to raise the bar a bit on these if I'm ever going to have any chance of completion. 1966T comes in 3rd on my toughness list. 1967T - High numbers: 76 - I have: 22 (29%). The toughest of the tough, as far as high numbered series in the 1960s are concerned. Of the 22 cards I have, only 3 are non-double prints. '67 hi''s rarely come up in anything less than EX condition, seem to be considerably scarcer than any of the other high series I've highlighted, and collectors are happy to pay a premium for them. Not only is it a popular set, the high series also includes some VERYtough cards, including #604 Red Sox team (the "Impossible Dream" year), #600 Brooks Robinson (a beautiful baseball card), #569 Rod Carew RC, and - probably the toughest- #581 Tom Seaver RC. In all honesty,I can't see me doing too much damage to list in the near future unless a lottery win is on the cards. Clearly top of toughness league. So there you have it. Of the five 1960s Topps sets which I consider to havehigh numbered series of some definitive scarcity, my rankings are: 1) 1967 2) 1961 3) 1966 4) 1962 5) 1960 Thanks to OBC and a keen eye for sniffing out auction deals and online bargains, I've done OK.....but I wish I could do better!! For a fun summer school course, he proposed doing a two-week class on card collecting. He was surprised to learn that the course was approved! Today, heasked me to be a guest speaker to the group of 9-year-olds. It was such afun experience that I wanted to share it with the OBC group. First of all, the class had to turn some folks away because Brian (teacher)didn't have enough materials. That's kind of exciting that so many kids wanted to sign up. He got a bunch of companies to donate product for the class. Joe Orlando with PSA came through with a huge contribution. He sent abunch of price guides and a couple dozen books--including a dozen "The T-206 Collection" books. Fortunately for me, the kids mainly chose the other book he sent and Brian had an extra copy of the T-206 book for me! I'll donate the book to the school's library when I finish with it. I spent 45 minutes going over my reasons for collecting, interacting with the kids to get their opinions and insights on a wide range of topics along the way. I asked how many had actually made some trades recently. EVERY SINGLE KID raised his or her hand! That, too, was inspiring to me. Maybe this trading thing will keep going strong! Their reasons for collecting were varied, but I concluded my talk by saying they could collect for any reason they wanted to as long as they had fun and made friends while doing it (and I even plugged OBC, saying you folks have revitalized me). Then I invited everyone over to the table I was at so they could take a look at a few of the cards I brought in. I essentially brought my entire pre-war collection. They LOVED it! The biggest hit was probably the very POSTwar Steven Strasburg chrome rookie I pulled a few weeks ago, but running aclose second was the 1887 Old Judge card I had. I brought one of those blanket cards, a Mecca Double Header, a Hassan Triple Folder, Colgan Chip, T-206s--basically just a nice variety of stuff that they probably had never handled Earlier in the week, the kids had asked Brian if they could just have some time to talk and trade cards (how cool is that?), so that's what they did after I was finished. I told them that I really needed to remember to bringsome stuff to trade next time because, frankly, some of them had some really neat, mainly UV cards. Someone made a trade offer on my Strasburg, but I just couldn't do it. I had to think a little less about trading my Old Judge card--that's going nowhere. Thanks for allowing me to share that story. It was just so much fun and soexciting to see so many enthusiastic collectors from this generation. ================= To: jschris@triwest.net, OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com Date: Thu, 22 Jul 2010 22:41:58 -0400 (EDT) From: Wite3@aol.com Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] OBC: The Next Generation Great story! Seventeen articles I have written for SCD have been on our Library page for some time along with articles written by other OBC members. I frequently get contacted by people who didn't see the original article in SCD but found my article years later on the OBC site. I have had some good exchanges with collectors, especially hobby veterans. Until this week, it was fairly cumbersome to post new articles on our site. However, Joe Isaac figured out we could save Word documents as .pdf files and just upload them as-is. Therefore I was able to send Joe 13 more articles to post to our Library page. The articles added in some cases ran in 2, 3, or 4 parts in SCD. For example there are long-winded articles on hobby correspondence and hobby publications from the 70s. There are even two articles on our library page which haven't actually come out in SCD yet including a piece on good-guy collector Ray Medeiros. With all the articles now on the Library page, I was even having trouble finding what I was looking for. Joe Isaac came to the rescue again, and reorganized the page to show articles chronologically by topic. If you are interested in reading everything we have on Jefferson Burdick, you can quickly find the articles of interest. If you are into variations and want to see what the 11 new 1963 Topps variations look like, you can find that article pretty easily as well. Take a look at our "library" and let me know if you've found something new and of interest. We have other OBC hobby writers in our midsts who I encorage to send their articles to Joe as well. SCD had no issues with my posting the published articles as long as I gave them credit; other publications should likely do the same. I encorage collectors to support SCD by subscribing to their weekly issues. To me, the price is reasonable and you get plenty of information every week. I would also agree with some observers that SCD could be more relavant and include more articles of interest to collectors like us. I would encourage you to contact TS O'Connell, SCD editor, and let him know if you have been bitten by the hobby writing bug. Send them an article - it's what collectors (George Vrechek) do when their wantlists become impossible. The memorial service was today. Mark Talbotalso knew the dealer and joined me. A card store owner (Rob of Comic's Archives) sat behind us, 2 other collectors/dealers, were near by and although I did not recognize him at first, Mike Rea of A to Z Cards was also there. For those that do not recognize the name, A to Z is the store that sets up at the National with a big sign that says, "OBC Friendly" dealers. My personal opinion is they are not truly OBC firendly, but are decent guys. Iknow TJ likes tham. I am a bit of a story for them, as they believe they are OBC and the 2 brothers that own it are, Mike & Rich. Last time I was there, my OBC card was displaed ina showcase. I digress, the sermon, included comments about Dennis and his card collecting. Mark and I, and the 2 other collector/dealers, stayed for the luncheon afterwards at the church, and the Pastor found out we were the card collecting table and came by to see us. Turns out Dennis had offered to pay the Pastor for the service and he had refused payment. Dennis therefore gave him a 1969 Topps BB #260 the Pastor wanted to show off to us. For those that do not recognize the number, that is Reggie Jackson's rookie card! The Pastor was mesmerized with our card stories and probably spent about 15 minutes at our table and ignoredhis When we left, Mark and I went to Comic's Archives. They save Tipton cards for me behind the counter with my name on it. He just givbes me a price anywhere from $5 - $20 normally for whatever he has put away. Today was a large stack (over 200 cards) and the price was $20. Turns out, in addition to a few miscuts that I enjoy, there were 3 hits to my actual vintage list! A 1976 Hostess Twinkee Robin Yount (the key to the set), which gets me to exactly 1/2 done and then among the 40 or so Post BB, were 2 variations to the 1961 Post set I needed. There was also a shortprint 63 Post #38, a fewTopps variations. The cards mainly spanned 1958-1972 for them most part and included 1958 Kaline, 1972 Clemente, Yaz and Fisk Rookie. Another highlight was a 1948 Bowman FB #1. There were some younger kids in the store and I pulled out a pair of old Tigers and gave them to 1 kid (1961 Don "Ears"Mossi and 1968 Eddie Mathews). You should have seen this kids eyes light up. Mark also gave me an envelope of Tigers cards he got at an event in Toledo, highlighted was a Willie Horton, my HOMer, card that I had not seen before. For a day involving a memorial service, it turned out being a good day. A Pastor who wants to see my collection, dealers asking me about the National, sparking vintage interest in a kid, spending time with a FOOT member of OBC, and a few hits to my list.
