I am with George on this. Cards I already have, the prices drop. Cards Iwant (prewar and oddball) the prices seem to still be going up. I was able to make it to the Toronto card show yesterday, and am going again today. Got very few bargains. I did pick up a few oddballs from Gary Nuchereno. Included were Lake to Lake BB, his only 62 Jell-o, Dan Dees, a Red Man w/tab, a Red Heart (he still has an off center, but sharp Rosen for $10) and abunch of 17 1961 Nu Card FB stickers. For those looking for Royal Dessert, he has a bunch trimmed, the number line at top is gone and the right borders cut off the last letter in the line it looks like. Most also have a heavy crease down the middle as if the cards were folded in half at some time. They run $12 each. None were versions I needed, Only star is a Kell. Gary only gives a 10% +/- or so discount ,especially on cards marked down due to condition. If interested (in the Royal Dessert or the Red Heart Rosen), I will be at the show again today and my cell (248) 709-2235. Thelast show I attended I bought a bunch at about 60 cents a card =E2=93 even thoughI didn=E2=99t really need any of the cards. My basic problem is that the cardsI need were not produced in great quantity eg early 60s Topps and Fleerfootball, early 50s Bowman football, 1949 Bowman baseball high numbers, and ofcourse the variations that stay on my list for years. The original plan was to drive up after work Friday, to be ready forthe show Saturday morning. Had to work even later than I hoped on Friday, found out my parents had dropped some stuff off at my house for my sister in Toronto, so I had to go back home to get it (a good 45 minute detour, from leaving straight from the office) and the fact that I only had 5 hours sleep Thursday nite (due to the Wings losing to San Jose), I decided to stayhome Friday nite, and go straight to the show on Saturday. New problem, is a nasty storm moved through southeast Michigan Saturday morning and I almost decided, to postpone the drive. I hit the road at 8:00 am (due to meds, I have trouble getting going in the mornings) and drove through rain and downpours for much of the trip. Others must have heeded the advice to stayoff the roads, and I made good time (first car at the border was the determining factor), even with reduced driving speed due to the weather. I was in the show around 11:45. Made a quick stop to see dealer Larry Cutthroat Kerrigan. Larry and I have a great relationship, and he helps us out with dealer badges for the National. I placed our order for 2 badges at $45 each. I then went to another dealer that I have dealt with repeatedly and bought a group lot of 70 common American League 1970 Tyco (Chemco) Super Balls. This should put me at just over 1/2 way with 145 of 288 now done. I willhave a few dozen available to swap from this purchase. As frequently happens, I ended up back at Larry's table and spent most of my money with him. I grabbed 36 1955-56 Quaker Oats and also a small stack of Goudey, Canadian Goudey, a Double Play, 2 Mp & Co cards, etc. He thought some of them maybe trimmed, but I could not tell. I think these will be upgrades to what Ihave, plus got a few hits. Later purchases netted a few 1930s matchbooks,a pair of Sports Kings, a C55 hockey, upgrades to my 1950 Bowman BB Rizzuto and Campanella (not that the 2 I picked up would grade better than poor, which tells you how bad the ones I have are). I picked up a hit to the Lake to Lake BB set, which should get me to 1/2 way on that set (14 of 28), a Dan Dee getting me to within 3, and a 62 Jell-o. At another table I got a 62 Post Canadian of Killebrew (with a tear). Beefed up the dupes box with some Tiptonesque 66 OPC BB and Post Canadian BB. Gary Nuchereno has a grouping of 1950 Royal Dessert cards that have the topnumber line cut off and what appears to have been trimmed so the last letter on each line on the right has been cutoff. They have also been folded in half for a crease down the middle. He has $12 each on them and only gives about a 10% discount. Only star is Kell. I did not need any of them. He also has a Red Heart Rosen in EX, but off center for $10. If interested call my cell today (248) 709-2235. Since the numbered version's a fairly rare proof set, I'm aware someone could've faked it. Any OBCers have another 1971 Bazooka numbered card to compare the attached scan to? My 2 concerns: 1. The "5 of 48" looks a little odd, but Bazooka *did* use sloppy printing 2. There's rippling in the paper, somewhat visible in the scan. There are clearly two layers, cardboard and paper, so it's not just printed on white card stock. My lists are getting so difficult that hitrs are hard to come by. Saturday had been a pleasant surprise and Sunday also yielded some more hits. In total, I got hits to over 24 different sets, got my 2nd card (actually a pin - 1932 Orbit Gum unnumbered) to 1 set, got 5 cards to start one set (Imperial "How to Play Golf") and 4 to start yet another (1937 Goudey Wide Pens Type 5 Canadian). I believe 4 sets switched from HAVE to WANT lists; 1955-56 Quaker Oats Hockey; 1956 Gum Adventure; 1960 Lake to Lake & 1970 Tyco Superballs. One set that got to 1/2 way recently, had 2 more hits to pass the 1/2 way mark (1933 WWG BB). I mark sets by getting to 1/2 way, down to 10, down to 5, down to 1 and then finished. One set made it down to 10; 1962-63 Parkhurst Hockey; 1 setto 5 & under - 1949 MP & Co. Reese. One set finished 1961-62 Topps Hockey, which also finishes my Topps Hockey run from 1954-55 (first Topps hockey set) through 1981. I bought a complete set of 1979 Our Heroes of Sport. Ihad been down to needing just 6, but got a complete set with album cheap. Decision- work on the dupe set or have over 40 type cards to send along toOBC. All total about 150 hits. Most hits were to the 1955-56 Quaker OatsHockey and 1970 Tyco Superballs with 36 hits each and 1923 Willard's Chocolates set with 17 hits. I was able to get some Tiptonesque groups of OPC BB, which will be passed around. Ant called me to aks if I could find a 1967 Starell for him to compelte his set. I was able to get 2 of this most elusive card. A few of us got it as the last card to our sets. I think I only ended up buying from 11 different dealers. Spent far more with Larry Kerrigan than anyone else. Also spent money with Gary Nuchereno who should also be at the National. Greg Fisher of Cameo Cards was NOT set-up. I hope he is doing OK. Anyone know? I did not see Gord Ellis, Carlos Alcazar or Brian Dwyer. I did see Carlos' friend Wes. Fortunately, manyof the dealers know me, so I did not feel lonely! Dupes boxes were reloaded, so feel free to swap away. I can probably find hits to all but a 1/2 dozen lists or so. I owe years of thanks, hundreds of acknowledgements and thousands of cards. Even though my card table was folded away and was confiscated for other uses, I still continue to follow our passions and love through the postings, ramblings, and details of trades, each and everyday. I have pages and pages in a spiral bound, itemizing inbounds, outbounds, and the debts to be, complete with needs, URL's, and the dreams, of someday making happy, the insides of your mailbox. Alas today, not to be. Today, I once again, beg. I am begging as a fifty year old plus, Detroit Tigers fan. A Detroit Tigers fan, who grew up listening to Ernie Harwell. I am so sad for Ernie's wife Lulu, and the entire Harwell and Detroit Tigers nation, but I also wish to rejoice in a wonderfullife, spent so wonderfully well. I admit, Ernie was only the second voice I learned to love, listening to mytransistor radio as a child, hidden under my pillow at night, when I was supposed to be sleeping. My first love was to Bruce Martin / Martyn ? (sp?)and Sid Abel, and the Red Wings. Never the less, just like so many Tigersfans, Ernie Harwell and his Georgia Peach, story telling voice, became oursummer time, backyard passion, for the Tigers. Doesn't all Tigers fans remember, "Go Get 'em, Tigers?" "World Series bound and pickin' up steam, goget 'em, Tigers !!!" Rats. If I could tell a story in just one sentence, all of us would be spared this, yet again, long ramble. Never the less, here is the nuts and bolts. I have learned that the Tigers are going to hand out an "Ernie" tribute card to all who are in attendance this evening. Simply put, I would loveto have one of those cards for myself. Name your price, and I will do anything and everything I can, to either hit your wants, else hit your wallet,if you could somehow, send me one. ... ... and if not, could I at least just touch and see one, and I'll send it back !!!?!!! No, I no longer live in Michigan, and no, I have yet to see one single gamein Comerica park, but come on, FOOT members, can't you now see why I askedfor honorary membership into the group? I WANT one of those Ernie cards. ...if anyone can help; Great. If not, well, whatever, I'll still take a look at your wants. If you have need, I still have a fairly good stockpile of upper grade, early 1970's. Rest in Peace Mr. Harwell. I found myself compelled to beg with this letter because I did NOT want to just "stand there like the house beside the road and watch (this opportunity) go by." Last weekend my church had a flea market. I signed up for a booth to raise some extra cash (for me and the church) as well as get rid of some clutter from the house. A few weeks ago, I decided that I was basically going to rid myself of all my post-1982 baseball cards. So, I went through everything and ended up with quite the pile of stuff. Three 5,000 count boxes, one 3,200 count box, a number of sets in albums, and a small stack of unopened wax boxes (88-91). After asking for pricing advice on the UV list, I stuck price stickers on everthing and loaded them in the van for the flea market. I also had three big boxes of comics books, and seven milk crates of LPs (music and comics being my other two collecting obsessions). The weather on Saturday in the Twin Cities did not cooperate at all. It was cold, windy, and prone to sprinkles and hail during the time of the flea market. As a result, there weren't a lot of shoppers. I did sell some baseball cards to two young boys (7ish and 4ish) and their father who stopped by my booth three times during the day. According to the dad, the older kid was just getting into collecting baseball cards. The first time they bought an unopened box of 1988 Topps ($3). They dropped by a second time on their way home and bought a complete 2002 Topps factory set ($10) and I gave them a couple of books about baseball cards for free (I had had 'em marked at $1 each). The dad asked how long the flea market would be open since they lived in the neighborhood. Nobody else showed any interest in the cards for the rest of the day. I sold a handful of comics and about 60 records though. After I had packed back into the van and handed over half of my proceeds to the church (that was the deal for the flea market), I was about to drive home. One of the other vendors was walking with two familiar looking boys asking who had the baseball cards. The older boy was clutching $4 and asked me what was worth $4. I opened up the back of the van and asked if he could manage to carry one of the 5,000 count boxes home. His eyes got huge as I handed over the box and he handed me the $4. His younger brother was clutching $2, so I asked him if he wanted some cards too. He nodded, so I pulled out the 3,200 count box and asked him if he could carry this home. He nodded again. So, I handed that box to him and took his $2. His face kind of fell and he said that he didn't want to buy it. I think that maybe he was planning to use the money for a treat from the food stand. So I smiled, and handed him back his two dollars and told the boys they could have both boxes for $4. They walked away quite obviously excited. If their dad would have been with them I probably would have forced another 5,000 count box on them. When I was about five or six, my mom bought me a shoebox full of cards at a garage sale or a flea market. Thirty five years later I still remember sitting in the sunshine in the back yard looking at those cards. Hopefully, in 2045 two certain men will remember that afternoon in 2010 when they walked home with their arms straining under the weight of baseball cards. ================= Date: Mon, 10 May 2010 15:48:34 EDT To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: larrygers@aol.com Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] I think I might have created a future OBC member or two t... As usual, I'm going to be the oddball. I always considered the postage to be part of the cost of the card, with the bottom line determining whether it's a good price or not, but if it was one I wanted badly or had been looking for for awhile, I'd almost certainly buy it whether it was a good price or not. I collect pre-war baseball board games. The atttached picture is my latest acquisition - it is a board from an 1886 McLoughlin Brothers "Game of Base-Ball." It was a spinner game, unfortunately the spinners are gone. All I have is the board - if I had the whole game, I'd be in to serious dollars. What I think is interesting is the concept of a baseball field in 1886 - no skinned infield, worn areas for the positions, a long area behind the plate for the catcher and umpire. To me, its fun to think about a kid in 1886 playing this game - a lot like we think about the kids that collected are cards 50 years ago. In my experience, the short answer is "no". Probably because there are so many, and more are being found all the time. Plus, there is disagreement over what constitutes a variation. And finally, you have to be a little nuts to chase these slippery things down. Generally, variation collectors decide what kinds of variations they want to collect. Ie, they draw the line somewhere. That said, there are resources: one of the best is at yahoo in the variations group. I once copied off approximately 100 pages of Topps variations (fl.grp.yahoofs.com/v1) but not sure it is there any more. Also a booklet Baseball Card Variations by Dick Gilkeson. Beside that, keep your ears open and you hear of more.
