Two years ago Brian helped meto my 8th championship in 25 years. Last year wasn't so good.. a little bad luck and no good luck with my pitchers sent me tumbling to 4th place. I'll have the 5th pick this year and pitching looks pretty strong in our ALonly First, who to keep... Mariano Rivera, James Shields, Ryan Rowland-Smith and Jeff Niemann are the best I've got (as you can see, I need help) Second tier who may or may not make the cut.. Andy Pettite, Tommy Hunter,Joe Saunders, Scott Downs, Jason Fraser and Joba Chamberlain. How wouldyou rank these guys amongst each other? Should any of them clearly be kept ahead of the first group?? Now for the pitchers available who came over from the NL.. How would you rank Finally, anybody got a raw rookie who's ready to step up this year (or a former NLer I may have missed). We're an eight team AL only league so the rookie has to be pretty raw not to have been picked up at the end of the year. Example, Feliz, Matusz and Tillman are already spoken for. ================= To: obc-ramblings@yahoogroups.com Date: Thu, 01 Apr 2010 10:37:59 -0400 From: DaPatriot1@aol.com Subject: Watching a Giant Icon fall Hello all, Yankee Stadium is no more. "Swithch hitters - those who bat from either side of the plate - are a distinct rarity in the majors these days with outfielder Dave Philley of the White Sox the only ambidextrious player. However, Tribe pitchers Early Wynn and Steve Gromek still employ this technique for the Indians - and with considerable success." As some of you may remember, I left OBC to concentrate on selling Japanese Baseball Cards (www.RobsJapaneseCards.com) The business did well for a fewyears then basically died. It still limps along, providing me with some card money but it is no longer a job. In 2005 I switched to writing about Japanese baseball full time. For those of you interested, please check out my author page at www.RobFitts.com. I've published two books and am now finishing one on Babe Ruth's visit to Japan in 1934. For the past 7 years I have purchased just a handful of vintage American cards. I focused on my Japanese collection, but have now found that unfulfilling. I merely buy cards and put them in a binder and almost never look at them again. I found myself thinking back to the pre-internet days when the chase for a card was the fun. That's when I started thinking about how much fun it was to get an OBC envelope and the enjoyment of being part of a card community. So I decided to return to American cards and OBC. I am collecting the starting nine of every team since 1957. To make it more fun, I've decided not to visit on-line stores to fill in missing commons. I plan to finish off my set by purchasing lots and trading off the ones I don't need. So far, I've picked up about 1000 1961s in G condition, a few hundred 1960s and a 3000 count box of 1970-75. If anyone needs commons from these years (I have no high numbers), please send me your want list. I've posted my wants from the 1970s on the OBC site so if you have the time, please take a look. Bill Ashton, my US-based middleman supreme, recently forwarded some cards on to me. Bill routinely takes delivery of auction items and dealer lots on my behalf. He stuffs these into a prepaid USPS box until its full, then dispatches it overseas. I'd been pretty busy over the past couple months and as a result, Bill filled two boxes for me. One of them, which contained a glorious load of cards from OBC uber-dealer Kurt Tourdot arrived safely at Chez Codere. The other, I'm sorry to say, did not. Still, it doesn't make it any less of a pain when it does happen! The lack of documentation means that the Royal Mail is unable to even tell if the package ever made it into the UK postal system. Its been about 5 or 6 weeks since Bill posted the package, so there may still be an outside chance of it turning up, but I doubt it. So what did I lose? Well, mostly UV, including about 120 Tigers cards and 7 unopened packs of 2009 Topps Heritage High Series. The biggest annoyance, however, are the vintage cards that were lost - a 1962T #5 Sandy Koufax and a 1965T #160 Bob Clemente, a pair of bargains ($10 and $13) that took me ages to track down, a $3 1961 hi#, and some 50s and 60s Red Wings Hockey. My nose for an internet bargain has been particularly string these past 6 months, and I was really proud about tracking down the Koufax and the Clemente at those prices. Moral of the story? Don't ever take for granted your ability to go along to a local store or show and buy your cards directly. You have no idea how much I envy reading about you guys meeting up, thumbing through bargain bins, and sniffing out deals. In the meantime, I'm fully at the mercy of at least 2 postal systems!! It would be very easy to promote togetherness of teams while also allowing for player wages to rise if baseball would get its act together. Asa twins fan, I was a long suffering supporter of the small market teams...thankfully the twins are in a better position now. If they had lost Joe Mauer in free agency, that would have been the last straw for me. Still, I cannot understand why anyone thinks a Yankees championship is worth anything. There is no doubt that it has become rooting for the team. The money and dollars have really overtaken the game. My niece learned this hard way. I had brainwashed her tobe a Red Sox fansince the day she was born.As she got older, she started paying attention to the players and the game. Eventually, Johnny Damon became herabsolute favorite player. When he left the team, she was devestated. She cried a lot. Donated her Damon shirts to the Red Cross. Thatwas the first timeshe realized that baseball is more than a game. There is no doubt that her and I both favor players that have come up through the system. Pedroia, Ellsbury, Pap, Lester, Youklis, Buchholz, Delcarmen, Bard. Will any of those guys be "one team" players? I sure hope so. But, considering the current state of baseball, probably not. Trades, free agency, and the budget will no doubt shorten that list. T.J. Did anybody else hear Joe Morgan'sBS about how there are no small market teams or how free agency hasn't hurt the game at all. Yeah, sure...the players are better off, but what about the fans? It would be very easy to promote togetherness of teams while also allowing for player wages to rise if baseball would get its act together. As a twins fan, I was a long suffering supporter of the small market teams...thankfully the twins are in a better position now. If they had lost Joe Mauer in free agency, that would have been the last straw for me. Still, I cannot understand why anyone thinks a Yankees championship is worth anything. Yeah, I could dominate a bunch of third graders in basketball, but you're not really a champion unless there is at least a somewhat level playing field. How about you only spend 2x your opponents...let's see you win then. My love for the pre-80's game is as strong as ever, and recently have been having a blast buying and reading the old paperbacks on the game and its stars. Maybe it is a small market thing, but I have noticed the kids - around here at least - don't really follow the game, even the ones playing little league. If they do, they pick one of the potential contenders to root for. If the Royals get a good ball player, there is universal acceptance that he won't be around long. It is really sad, because I grew up with that transistor next to my ear and considered Killebrew, Carew, and Oliva my boyhood trinity. It was assumed they would be Twins forever, although Killebrew and Carew both ended their careers elsewhere. The last player I was a fan of was Puckett. If no one is at the stadiums they would get the point and change would come quick but as long as people continue to pay what ever the clubs demand we are stuck with what we got. While I am based outside of Detroit, andthis boss is based in Cincinnati, our headquarters is in Cleveland. I declared it would be beneficial for em to spend a day in the Cleveland office. While I wanted to go for political reasons, it is close to Strongsville, OH. The reason this is important is that there was/is a weekend show in Strongsville this weekend. I had never been to this show before, but was told it is heavy in vintage material. Unfortuantely, I was only able to get to the show at 4:00 and it closes at 8:00 on Friday's. I did not make it through the room and would have liked to go back to a few of the tables. That said, I was able to make some purchases. A few dealers knew me by name, Kevin Savage's table, including Pat; Larry "Cutthroat" Kerrigan (who once again is willing to sell us National dealer passes for approximately $45), etc. and a number who either recognized me from the National, Toronto (Gary Nucherenko) or even the Chicago show I went to last year. If that did not do it, my OBC short also elicited, comments. First table I stopped at ended up being my biggest purchase at Uncle Dick's table. I picked out anumber of cards from his bargain bins (he commented, that a few he had just put in there Friday morning and was amazed that those were the ones I found). Down side, is he gives very little quantity discount on the grounds that healready marks down the bargain bins. I did by a group lot from him. How can you pass up a stack labelled as, "mutilated" cards. Funny thing is that 2 cards in this stack ended up being upgrades when I got home. I wonder what he would think of that? I bought individual cards from T-220 boxers 1971 Bazooka Fb and Kellogg's BB. I did buy a 1978 set of Atlanta Convention cards in my last purchase as the show was closing. I picked up the last 2 1969 Topps BB stamps I needed to complete a base set. Now I will work ona set to put into the stamp albums. Unfortunately teh 2 i picked up were mounted to cardboard and will need to be replaced, but the set is done. Ended up getting 39 hits to 23 different sets. One of teh cards actually maynot be considered a hit to a set, as it was a type card for the 1936 S andS set. As usual I picked up some for the dupe box of high demand cards inlow grade for low prices. I do not know if the prices will stick, but a few sets have had the high column prices sky rocket the last few years in the big SCD. Mainly older sets that high grade cards are extremely tough to come by . I assume even the lower grades will rise in prcing as a percentage of the high column. So big ticket dupes picked up for swapping in low grade include; 1948 Bowman #18 Spahn (anyone have a 1949 Bowman Satchel Paige to swap); 1949 Bowman BB trimmed: $194 Branca 238 Lemon; 1964 Topps Bb Stand-Ups Clendenon marichal Stuart; 1949 Leaf BB numerous commons; 1948 Bowman FB #33 (I only need 2 other SP's #18 39); 1948 Leaf FB #98 (short printAND the last card in the set) and 1964 Topps Bb coins #120 Mantle and 131 Mantle (righty swing) (looking for 1963 Salada BB coins #24 Aaron 56 Mantle). The suggested swaps are not the only things I would trade the above for, just some desired items to finish off some sets or cards I really want. I hope those in Ohio try and make the show on Sunday (it is open 10 - 4) asit was well worth the $4 admission. After his earlier email, I checked out Sean's UV list to see if I could help him out with anything. I saw that he was looking for some 1997T, and I thought that since I was only about 40% complete on that set, I'd help him out with whatever I had. I had to rake through loads of boxes to find the elusive '97s, and when I did I'm sorry to say that I only had 2 cards from his list. For the moment, I'm not going to waste an airmail stamp on a pair of 1997T commons so I'll just put them aside for the time being. I'm sure I'll find something to send to Sean at some point in the future, and when I do I'll include these. Now, the good news (for me!!). You know that thrill you get when you unexpectedly find money in a jacket or a pair of pants you haven't worn for a while? Whether it's 10c or $10, it always gives you a good feeling, doesn't it? Well, I had a similar experience today, but with baseball cards instead of money!! While searching for those 1997T cards for Sean, I came across several old cards that I'd obviously tucked away in various boxes and forgotten about. A couple of 51B, a 52T, a 53T, 2 x 54Ts, 2 x 54B, a 55B, 2 x 55T, 2 x 56B, 2 x 57T, a 58T and a 59T. Quite a haul, huh? And they've just been sitting there quietly, waiting for me to come calling at some point. I'm not actively collecting sets prior to 1957, but I'm thinking about starting to quietly pick up a card here and there. I'm certainly not going to add them to my active wantlist yet, but maybe in a year or two...... Anyway, apologies to Sean for building his hopes up, but happy, happy, happy for me! That's the beauty of getting the bus to work and back - someone else does the hard work while I sit back, read, and listen to some music! Anyway, the book I recently finished is "Black and Blue: Sandy Koufax, the Robinson Boys, and the World Series That Stunned America" by Tom Adelman, the story of the 1966 World Series and the season and events leading up to it. The book focuses primarily on the impact of Frank Robinson's arrival in Baltimore, and on Sandy Koufax's last season in the majors. I hadn't realised just how bad an offensive unit that Dodgers team actually was. To get as far as they did was a massive tribute to the abilities of their pitching staff. My current daily read is "Clemente: The Passion and Grace of Baseball's Last Hero" by David Maraniss - an in depth, well written biography of the life and times of Roberto Clemente. I've just arrived at the chapter on the 1955 season, his first with the Pirates after being claimed from the Dodgers in the Rule 5 draft. Its very interesting to read how highly the Dodgers rated Clemente, and yet did their best to "hide" him in the minors. The implication being that Clemente was signed by Brooklyn more in an effort to keep him away from their rivals rather than to develop and play him themselves. So far, another enjoyable read!
