Forthose that have gone through this, you are aware the prep is infinately worse than the test itself. As part fo thsi, you need to fast for 24 hours. As stated above, I already was not feeling that well. Combining that with the fast and clearing myself out, I ended up not going into work on Tuesdayalso, as I was feeling ill. I never sailed across the ocean, butif you are a true sailor, one has almost as much respect for the Great Lakes as one does the oceans. It wasn't a career, but for three years I used to "work" the SS William Clay Ford Jr., hauling taconite (Iron Ore) from Duluth, Minnesota and Superior, Wisconsin, into Dearborn, Michigan. The William Clay was the flagship of five Ford vessels, so when we weren't hauling anchor or securing the ship for sail, we were required to make the ship look like it was as "pretty" as a cruise ship. We spent our daze and nights, swabbing, scraping, chipping and re-painting, over and over and over again to make it look new. Yes, the humidity and the water of the lakes created enough rust and corrosion, but nothing like the salt water that the oceans could do, yet according to Ford Motor Company and tradition, we were the Flagship of the company and were weren't just some "old salty" floating in from Greece or Asia, so our ship was REQUIRED to look like it was a plastic LEGO ship, straight out of the Lego factory. Not a rust spot to be found, and no "old salt's" were allowed to sail. We had to "dress up" whenever we passed through the locks, or into port. Two and a half football fields long of steel, yet the thing had so many layers of paint, down in the tunnels, we had to chip for hours, just to reach the rust. A "Swell" ship for the skipper, but a "HELL" ship for the crew!!! ...and yes, Tiger Stadium was indeed, visible from the river, and OH how I used to long to be able to just get a peek inside, to see the green grass and the score, whenever we would pass by in the evening when the lights wereon. ----- Original Message ----- From: Lynn Miller To: OBC Thanks Sent: Thursday, March 11, 2010 9:57 PM Subject: [OBC-Thanks] Thanks to a Conspiracy Most often the words thanks and conspiracy would not be associated. He helped set up and was at the field from7 am until we were done around 6 pm at night. He was one of us. Someone who loved the game, the people and enjoyed helping out. Watching a pro ball player play on the same field as me was incredible. He hit as you would expect. We played a one-up rule. So he was not able to just hit a home-run every at bat. His speed, reaction time and arm were all very impressive. He played Left Center Field and chased down sure hits makinga few incredible all-out diving catches. He almost threw a batter out, from the outfield, who hit a line drive and Jack picked it up on one hop and threw a rope to 1st base. The batter was safe by less than 1/2 a step. The next time I met Jack was at his house. He had the volunteers for the Christ First Baseball Camp over to prepare for the camp. What a treat to be able to go to a Major League Ball players house. I was thrilled. Well, Jack was Jack, a down to earth human being. We had some Pizza and had our meeting. And then was treated to a tour of part of the house. The best part, the game room. As you walk in the room you notice all the Baseballs in the floor. There were two rows of Wilson Baseballs bordering the room recessed in the floor and back-lit. A very impressive look. Ha has many different items and he shared a story about each of them and the person who gave it to him. The prize of Jack's collection is Ichiro's cleats. A pair worn and signed by Mariners outfielder Ichiro. He let me hold them, actually he insisted. They were the lightest pair of shoes I have ever held! These are metal Baseball cleats that Ichiro wears every game. Well, he wears a new pair every three days. The bottom iscarbon fiber with metalspikes and the sides aremade of silk. He also has a Bat from Ichiro. The handle was the thickest one in Jack's collection. Oh, he also let me hold any of his bats. He has a nice collection of them and a story to go with each one. He only has bats of players he respects as a person. Okay, back to Ichiro, he has a bat case. Most players have a bat bag they throw all there bats in. Not Ichiro, he uses a bat case that is humidity controlled and each bat is stored in foam so they won't get dinged up. He also has his own Forest back in Japan where he grows the trees that he uses for his bats. Some of the players wrote a personal note to Jack on the bat they gave him. Most of them were comments about Jack robbing them of base hits. Lance Berkman, Craig Biggio, Griffey Jr., Jorge Posada, Derek Jeter to name a few. I noticed Posada's bat handle was extremely thin so I took it off the wall and held it. The handle is about as thick as your thumb and to think Posada does not wear batting gloves. He also has every Jersey that he has been issued as a pro player. When theychanged the style of Jersey he kept one. On the ceiling was an All-Star Jersey from his 2004 appearance signed by the entire NL squad, including Bonds. Apparently Bonds did not sign many of the Jerseys, however he did make it a point to sign Jack's. All the players sign a jersey for each of the other players, all except Bonds who did very few signings. Jack said they signabout 500 items as an All-Star. Jack has a unique signature on his bat. When they get there bats they submit their signature. So Jack had his wife sign his name and submitted that signature to be put on his game bats. This way he has her with him all the time and can see on his bat who he is playing for. In the back yard he has a full size infield. Next winter maybe I'll throw afew with him on his field. At the Baseball camp Rookie Pitcher Doug Fister of the Mariners showed up to help. At the end of the camp Doug, Jack and his brother Andy who played minor league ball for many years put on a Home-run show. Doug being a pitcher hit the first few 350 feet...straight up. Once he got his timing down he crushed a few. Jack hit about 10 in a row out and his brother hit some monster Home-runs. Andy tore his shoulder during a Minor League game on a throwfrom the outfield. He was heading to the show later that year. His career was done on that throw. He played a few more years in the Minors yet never made it back to his peak. The Baseball camp had a Dinner Banquet and Former Brewers and WS Champion Reds player Glenn Braggs was a guest speaker. I was able to talk with Glenn after the event. This man has the biggest hands I've ever seen. Glenn attends a local Church where I do some work with the Sports Ministry. He was very interesting to talk to. The night was too short for me, as I was there tohelp and not socialize. Jack shared a story on stageabouthislife and how much his wife and family mean to him. A touching way to endthe I enjoyed my time with Jack. He signed many Baseball cards for me. I can't wait for the season to start and the Mariners to come to town and see Jack play on his field. Lance Berkman, Craig Biggio, Griffey Jr., Jorge Posada, Derek Jeter to name a few. I noticed Posada's bat handle was extremely thin so I took it off the wall and held it. The handle is about as thick as your thumb and to think Posadadoes not wear batting gloves. Jack shared a story on stage about his life and how much his wife and family mean to him. A touching way to end the evening. I enjoyed my time with Jack. He signed many Baseball cards for me. I can'twait for the season to start and the Mariners to come to town and see Jackplay on his field. And for the second year in a row the White Sox and Cubs came to Cashman Field, home of the Blue Jays AAA affiliate Las Vegas 51's, to play under the sunny skies of Vegas. It was actually the 2nd game of a double-header with the first game being played Friday night and the Cubbies walking away with a sweep. Watched a good game with the Cubs coming up with 4 runs in the bottom of the 8th and holding off the White Sox weak rally in the top of the 9th for an 8-7 win. As with most spring training games saw a lot of players with big numbers and no names on the back of the jerseys vying for a spot on the opening day roster. No dingers since there was an almost gale-force wind blowing in from left-center and no one managed to even come close. Definitely were a very large amount of Cubbies blue to be seen with a sprinkling of Sox black in the stands, 11,553 fans filling to capacity. Dodgers and Reds next on March 31 but it's a night game so not sure I can make it and probably already sold out anyway. Was a great time with another great friend. Thanks Mike for another very enjoyable day and for sharing the beginning of the season with me. We will take in some 51's games this season. But I'm not giving up you raised a fighter. I don't want you to worry you need to concentrate on mom and your health. Here is a posting I put on craigslist last night and we have already gotten calls for some tree stump removal this morning. Tell me what you think and if you have any other ideas. Love Ya! We need help after a tragic 2007 accident on Rt. 58 that took the lives of 6 young adults and children and destryed our business and taking it away for 6 months. On July 24, 2007 a car flew across from the other side of 58 hitting Ray's Drill Rig. Ray was able to pull one young boy out of the burning vehicle before it completly went up in flames. He will never get that vision out of his head. We have been trying to catch up ever since then. There is not a day goes by that Ray is not thankful he is here or doesn't think about the family that lost 5 siblings. Right now we are in extreme financial hard ship with Dr. bills and house payments and need help. The insurance company only covered the past Dr. bills in the trial that was on March 10. Which did not cover any of our loses that accumulated from that tragic day. Ray has a permanent injury in his back for the rest of his life. We know these losses are nothing compaired to the 6 in the car that hit him head on and will never stop thanking god that he is still here. I am asking for help in the form of work or baked goods. Ray has 20 years experience in fencing and roofing. Please let us know if you need a new Fence, Deck or shed. He can also do roofing and roof repair. If you are here in suffolk he can do tree and stup removal. Any job would help right now we are trying to save our house. The last 2 1/2 years have been extremely hard with the accident and economy. I have figured out if I can get 1000 people to send $20 I can help him save his house with every $20 I will send either a dozen homade chocolate covered cherries or a loaf of fresh bananna bread. We are not asking for charity just a chance. If you know anyone that could use any of these services please pass this on. If you want to read more about the accident you can Google "Ray Shourds Accident" He was in many people's eyes that day a hero saving the life of his friend and employee and going into a burning car to try and save a child. He was able to pull out one boy before the gas cap blew off and hit him in the leg, he took one or two steps back and the whole car ignited. I thank you for taking the time to read this. You can contact Ray Shourd the following way for an estimate 3413 Manning Rd Suffolk, VA 23434 Jobs can be paid by PayPal also. I had been on a long, fruitless search for that one, particularly difficult-to-find card and suddenly there it was. I spotted the prize in a dealer's case from 10 feet away and knew I had to have the card. I suppressed my initial reaction of calling out "Eureka, I have found it!" - a collector's expression that will bring a smile to a dealer's face, if the card isn't already priced to the hilt. The card was a 1954 Bowman Carl Erskine, not a particularly difficult card unless you are a variation collector and looking for a version that has "loops in the sky." SCD's Bob Lemke wrote an article several months ago about this discovery. After 56 years of the Bowman Erskine card being on the market, some alert collector noticed that the top of the sky behind Erskine on his card had the lower portion of a signature coming from the card above it on the printing sheet. Apparently the players signed the cards when they were laid out in sheets and the signature extended off of one card and onto another. Preacher Roe's card had the same variation. Both variations seemed to have been corrected very early in the process. I was lucky to find the Roe variation, but Erskine had not turned up. I checked ebay, stores, and large shows for months with no luck. Lemke's article mentioned that it was undetermined how rare the Erskine variation was but that Levi of 707 Sportscards was on the case. I was on a mission to find Erskine before someone decided that it was a $1,000 card. I remember recently taking a pass on a $45 Hal Smith 1960 Leaf variation and then seeing it sell on ebay for something like $1,500. The card now books for $750. I casually asked the unknown dealer if he had any 1954 Bowmans. He said he only had one left - what are the odds of that? He said someone had bought everything but the one Erskine card. He pulled it out of the case. The card was in decent shape, the top corners were a little soft, but I didn't want this guy focusing on the nearby treasured "loops in the sky" and somehow remembering the article. He wanted $35 for the card which seemed only about 3 times its (variation-less) value. I theatrically grumbled a bit, and we settled on $25. Usually after overpaying (theoretically) for a card you find the card at the next table for half the price. At this point that hasn't happened. Thought you guys and gals would like to know about "loops in the sky." I remember hearing (on radio) and seeing him play (on TV and in person) many times. He was the only player from the Dodgers of my youth (1962-1966), except maybe Ken McMullen, who lasted into the first half of the 1970ies. I remember him as an interregnal part of the Dodger teams I loved - always doing his job. Advancing the runner, getting timely hits and making great plays in center field. When I saw a Willie Davis card come out of a pack - I was smiling. The only players that made me smile more were Koufax and Drysdale (Maury Wills would have made me smile the most but it only happened with the '63 Fleer cards). I remember seeing a game in Chicago in the Summer of 1962. Willie was batting third at that time. Maury was on his way to stealing 104 bases. I rode the L from my grandmother's place in Rogers Park and got into the game for fifty cents. Maury stole at least one base that day and Willie and Tommy got some hits. The Dodgers won (but I had to keep quiet about that...) '62 is my favorite Dodger team - a pleasure for a nine year old to enjoy... I am sorry that he is gone - but the way he played will not be forgotten. Peter / marcpeter ================= To: Date: Sun, 21 Mar 2010 22:52:18 -0700 From: "Brian Lindholme" Subject: Ramblings! A sad day. And for all you newer folk--here is Grant's recap off the ramblings server (in several parts). Grant seems to have lost track of time--as his interviews were more than four years ago. Or maybe I have lost track of time....one of thelegendary members of the HOM! Grant's intro ( February 15, 2006) Mere hours away from speaking to =E2=9C The Man. =E2=9D Haven =E2=99 t figured out yet how I am going to convince him I =E2=99 m not totally deranged, only a little bit. My bride went over my list of questions, and managed to talk me into striking quite a few. She figured I would have him on the phone for a couple of days, so we pared the list down. For example, she asked if it was really all THAT important to me to ask him if he puts his left sock on first, or his right. I think I =E2=99 m back on trackwith my questions now. Oh yes, this is going to be fun =E2=A6=E2=A6 report to follow =E2=A6 Part I Spent about 90 minutes on the phone with Billy, Bill Jr. and Terry. Billy has an excellent memory and remembered lots of fine detail. W hat a gas =E2=A6 .I had a bit of a time trying to scribble notes , and have to wait for the DVD that Bill Jr. is sending me, but here =E2=99 s a bit of an excerpt: Billy could have been a Bonus Baby like Kaline and Joey Jay. Asked him about turning down the =E2=9C Bonus Baby =E2=9D money which would have been huge coin back then. He said it was a calculated gamble , based on the advice of his HS coach. Had he accepted, he would have had to go right from high school and spend a year with the team, mostly riding the pine, and he didn =E2=99 t feel ready for the Majors anyways. He said it pretty much paid off, he had two very good years in the minors and pretty much got better money anyways when he si gned his first contract with the Tigers in =E2=99 Asked about the transition from H.S. ball to the minors to the bigs- Not that bad =E2=A6 .the same H.S. coach taught me early on thatno matter what league you are in, it =E2=99 s still the same distance to the plate. Only difference is, the batters are better and you have to learn to be smarter than them. Once I figured out that it was more mental thanphysical, I was okay. Made the All Star T eam in 1955, but didn =E2=99 t get to play- disappointed? Hell NO! I was happy enough to just be there. I was going to pitch the top of the 13 th . They left Frank Sullivan in for the 12 th , and Musialpinch hit a homer to win it. In 1956, you win 20 games and don =E2=99 t make the All Star Team. Damn baseball writers shouldn =E2=99 t be allowed to vote. I don =E2=99 t like the fans voting either, too much ballot box stuffing. It ought to be the players. Thought that back then and think it now. In 1959, you get traded to Boston, then Baltimore- do you uproot the family. Hell yeah. What you do is rent out your house to some other player duringthe season , and move back after. Norm Cash rented my house, and a couple of other pretty damn good hitters. After I got traded the first timemy house became a Hitter =E2=99 s House. You now are becoming a reliever rather than a starter- Yeah, that was Paul Richard =E2=99 s idea. He said I had a good strong arm and there wa s noreason he couldn =E2=99 t use me for both. I didn =E2=99 t care, as long as I got to play. Any significance to your wearing #44? Not really =E2=A6 .back then, anybody who had played a bit for the big team already got to wear # =E2=99 sunder 30. Rookies got treated like s*** and had to wear high numbers so everyone knew you were green . I ended up with 44 and just kept it. Did teams do anything to prepare you for life after baseball, like financial planning? Hell no, they didn =E2=99 t give a rat =E2=99 s a** aboutyou once they were done with you. Did you have any interest in coaching after your playing days were over. Well they asked me to, but I ain =E2=99 t a yes man, I couldn =E2=99 t do Your fave manager to play for? Paul Richa rds. Pitching Coach? Harry Brecheen. Mostly pitching coaches left you alone. Asked him about Charley Maxwell on behalf of Earl K- He was a quiet guy whocould only hit homers on Sundays. We called him =E2=9C Greenback =E2=9D because he always played left field way too short. He wanted to protecthis fielding average so bad, he didn =E2=99 t want to take the chance of missing balls deep. Kept falling over when the ball kept getting hit overhis head, and ended up with grass stains. Ball was hit deep enough that itwas a single of course, and not an error. Used to drive us crazy. We =E2=99 d yell at him, but it didn =E2=99 t make any difference. Asked on behalf of Jim Wiehe if Gus Triandos hit his first dinger off him. Are you kiddin =E2=99 me? He did? I don =E2=99 t remember that, but he must have been with the Yankees then. I =E2=99 ll have to remember to ask him. Part 2 to follow =E2=A6 . Part II After your first two unspectacular seasons, you went 16-7, 20-14, an All Star appearance =E2=A6 what made the difference? I learned how to get ahead of the hitters, and then just plain challenge them. I had a real good fastball, and if I could get the right count on them, I could usually blow it by 3 homers is your career, all in =E2=99 53, 2 in one game off Skinny Brown. The other? Pascual of Washington. I hit that one a ton into the upper deck. Newcombe wins the Cy Young in =E2=99 56 when there was one award for both leagues. Whitey Ford gets the only AL vote, you get none, but you won 20,he won 16 with a better team. Y our thoughts? Damn baseball writers. They always liked the Yankees and Mantle in particular. In 1960, you get sent down to Miami of the Int. League. Was that injury rehab? Nope, they just wanted me to get some innings. Knew I wasn =E2=99 t going to be there for very long. Played a lot of golf. Any superstitions? Yep =E2=A6 never step on the lines on the way to and from the dugout. And if I won, I =E2=99 d wear the same socks and undershirt the next game. When I lost, I =E2=99 d do laundry. I was a little stinky that year I won 20. In =E2=99 66, you get released by the Giants. Any thought of catching onanywhere else? Nope, knew I was done. Too bad, 3 more wins and I would have had 100. Were you a baseball card collector as a kid? Not really, but I had some. Put =E2 em in the spokes of my bike wheels like everyone else. A few years back I did round up sets of my cards for each of my kids. (Editor =E2=99 s Note: They were surprised to hear that I have 4 different =E2 53/ =E2=99 54 Dixie Lids of Billy, and didn =E2=99 t know about the =E2=99 62 T Venezuelan, or a couple of other oddballs. .) Any idea how much your =E2=99 52 Topps RC is worth? In really nice shapesomewhere around $400 I think. (He =E2=99 s right =E2=A6 .even a mid-grade goes for a couple of hundred). =E2=99 53 Glendale Meats cards- any idea how that Tigers set came about?Nope, don =E2=99 t remember those. (I sent him a scan). Casey Stengel once said he thought very highly of you. Did the Yankees evercome calling looking for a trade? I heard some rumours back around 1960 or=E2=99 61, but nothing came of it. Anyone from your era that you feel should be in the HOF but isn =E2=99 t? ( Besides yourself of course.) Not really, can you? (I suggested Roger Maris.) He said you =E2=99 re kidding, he =E2=99 s in there isn=E2=99t he? If he =E2=99 s not, he should be =E2=A6 Besides guys we all know as Superstars, name a couple of hitters who gave you trouble . Nellie Fox and Hank Bauer. They gave me fits. Just when I thought I had them set up , I =E2=99 d throw one maybe 4-5 inches off the plate, and the next one w as gonna smoke right by them, but those two could somehow reach that far out of the box and somehow manage to bloop the ball for singles. Drove me nuts, those two. Now if you asked my a superstar I hadno problem with, I =E2=99 d say Ted Williams, I had his number pretty good. Got Mantle out a lot too, but he still man a ged to pound a couple out. If you had to pick someone from either before or after your playing days that you would have liked to try your stuff with, who would it be? (A lot of thought went into this =E2=A6 long pause =E2=A6 ) =E2=A6 ..Joe Dimaggio. He went out in =E2=99 51 and I started in =E2=99 52. If I had to pick one guy to try on for size, it would be him. Part 3 to follow. Part III Every player gets asked for his highlights, and yours have to include hitting two dingers in one game , and tossing a one hitter. I =E2=99 dlike to ask what your biggest disappointment in baseball was, if there wasone. Disappointment? Maybe never making it to a Series. But my real highlight was meeting my wife Marjorie in Spring Training in (couldn =E2=99 t catch the year =E2=A6 ) =E2=99 52? You are one of few pitchers to strike out the side in nine pitches. Do you remember who the batters were? Really? I didn =E2=99 teven know I did that =E2=A6 . You were there for the early years of Black integration =E2=A6 .what areyour recollections of that era? Yep, I was. By the time I was there, it was mostly all right. I only ever really had a problem with one guy, and I don =E2=99 t want to talk about it. (He mentioned later in passing that it was Earl Robinson of Baltimore.) Ozzie Virgil was the first black on the Tigers. He was from the Dominican. I =E2=99 ll never forget he arrived at the ball park in a limo at h is first game at Briggs , he won it for me. Went 5 for 5. We tried real hard to get him up once more to give him a shot at 6 for 6, but it didn =E2=99 t work out. He was a good ball player and just a great guy. What was the funniest thing you ever saw happen during a game? (Longpause =E2=A6 .heavy thinking going on, then he started to laugh =E2=A6 his boys were laughing at Billy laughing ) Chuck Stobbs of the Senators, around 1960. Oh, he was pitching a helluva ball game. Then he lets go with a fastball, and it goes directly up into the grandstandon the 1 st base side, half way between first and home , almost takes a fan =E2=99 s head off, but doesn =E2=99 t hit anyone. N o idea how he did that. They had to stop the game for a bit, every one was laughing so hard. Finished him for that game, for sure , couldn =E2=99 t pitch after that. Did any other players you were with in the Minors in Richmond and Toledo make it to the bigs? I can only think of one, and he did okay I think =E2=A6 He was with me in Richmond =E2=A6 .name is Bunning. What was your favorite stadium for whatever reason. Briggs and Memorial, loved both of those. What players do you still see socially today? Oh, I see Kaline, Ginsberg, Garner and Bertoia quite a bit. Looking up Killebrew when I go to Florida ina few weeks. When I do searches on Ebay for Billy Hoeft items, I sometimes see a Hoeft Chicken Feeder listed. They were patented around 1913 and are quite collectible apparently. Was that an invention by someone in your family? Not that I know of, I never even heard of one before. But believe it ornot, there =E2=99 s lots of Hoefts around. You led the league in ERA in =E2=99 61 with a 2.02 average , but your =E2=99 62 Topps AL ERA Leaders cards says 2.04. What say we start a class action lawsuit? (Hilarious laughter from Billy and the boys =E2=A6 How =E2=99 s your golf game? I think they =E2=99 re making that damn hole smaller than they used to =E2=A6 . but I get out a lot . ( As you can see, my interview lightened up over the course of our conversation . I then finished it with a word-association game =E2=A6 .I said I =E2=99 m going to name a few players, and I =E2=99 d like you to justthrow out your first response) Jim Piersall - He was CRRRRRRRRAZZZZZY Minnie Minoso- just a real good ballplayer, could do it all Mickey Vernon- he hurt me! Hit me on the ankle with a screamer of a line drive and put me on the injury list Elston Howard- a good, smart hitter Albie Pearson- the little WUSS!!!! Only ever wanted to bunt against me Matt Batts- good catcher, couldn =E2=99 t hit Bill Skowron- another real good hitter Denny McLain- brilliant inside the lines, outside the lines he was an a****** Norm Cash- He was crazy, once went up to bat with a table leg, Luciano wouldn=E2=99t let him. Won the batting title in =E2=99 61 the year he rented my house. Funny guy. First guy to turn my house into a hitter =E2=99s Dean Chance- nuttier than a fruitcake Bo Belinsky- too bad , he was a typical left-hander like me, a real flake. Joe Pepitone- never really knew him This pretty much ended the =E2=9C interview =E2=9D and we went on to just yakking about stuff . When I get the DVD there will likely be lots more that I couldn =E2=99 t keep up with , and if anything really good comes up I =E2=99 ll pass it on =E2=A6 .the Grand Finale is comingup, so stay with me. I put my pen down and we all had a chat about life, etc, and we got around to baseball today compared to how it was when he played. You =E2=99 ll like this: =E2=9C I think I was there for the best years baseball ever had, the Glory Years. One thing we DIDN =E2=99 T do was EVER show somebody else up. Today, I look at Bonds, and when he hits one, he just drops the bat and admires it. I tell ya, if he EVER did that to me, his next at bat would be real interesting. The first pitch would be outside a few inches, and the next one would be right in his ear. I wouldn =E2=99 t take that crap off of anyone. Yeah, Billy, me too. And THANKS! My conclusion and personal thoughts to follow in the next day or so. Well, it was grand indeed. For the newer guys in the group , Billy was moreor less the inspiration for the Hall of Mediocrity, which can be found on our home page. Just some great names in there , many of which came up during our conversation. I readily admit that talking to B illy is the highlight of my baseball =E2=9C career , =E2=9D since I still live in the =E2 50 =E2=99 s and =E2 60 =E2=99 s, which is a dead giveaway to my age, I guess. I found Billy a little tight at first, almost like he was trying to figure out if I was a nut, or sincere. Didn =E2=99 t take long for himto warm up, and he became really open with his answers. Advice for those of you that have an unsung hero - just do it. Write to them , ask them if you can call, or better yet, if you can, try to arrange a meeting. I =E2=99 d love to meet up with Billy, but it =E2=99 s a helluva long way from Vancouver to Michigan , and I don =E2=99 t have a VW van. I t=E2=99s an experience you just will never forget. And if you get lucky and get a chance to ask questions , so much the better. I tried to make mine a little off the wall, and did a LOT of research before I started asking. I tried to avoid the usual questions that they are likely tired of hearing, going instead for a touch of the personal side, and really obsc u re stuff that shows you are truly interested and have done your homework. Asking him about the Hoeft Chicken Feeder for example, almost had him in hysterics, and he had never heard of it. And he liked being asked about his family. Billy thanked ME at the end, and I think he was truly flattered that there =E2=99 s still baseball fans out there who care. Heck, he was the one who made MY day. Just do it. I think she's kinda looking forward to sleeping in a tent just to get out of the house, but I digress... anyway, I'm asking those of you who can to make a donation of any amount to help her with her goal. Besides that warm and fuzzy feeling you'll get, I might even throw a little cardboard your way (if I can) as well. Plus those of you who might have me down on your IOU list (based on my outbound packages, you've been keeping it for a very long time) can cross my name off with a simple donation instead of trying to find one of the very expensive cards that are left on my list. Two years ago Brian helped me to my 8th championship in 25 years. Last year wasn't so good.. a little bad luck and no good luck with my pitchers sent me tumbling to 4th place. I'll have the 5th pick this year and pitching looks pretty strong in our AL only First, who to keep... Mariano Rivera, James Shields, Ryan Rowland-Smith and Jeff Niemann are the best I've got (as you can see, I need help) Second tier who may or may not make the cut.. Andy Pettite, Tommy Hunter, Joe Saunders, Scott Downs, Jason Fraser and Joba Chamberlain. How would you rank these guys amongst each other? Should any of them clearly be kept ahead of the first group?? Now for the pitchers available who came over from the NL.. How would you rank them?? Finally, anybody got a raw rookie who's ready to step up this year (or a former NLer I may have missed). We're an eight team AL only league so the rookie has to be pretty raw not to have been picked up at the end of the year. Example, Feliz, Matusz and Tillman are already spoken for.
