No one will getthe enjoyment out of them as you do so you should collect what you want tocollect. Perhaps you might ask yourself how much post-war trading do you do and how much is that worth - in terms of the fun of trading and remaining an activepart of the community. I'm not sure how much pre-war trading you do, but imagining what trading would be like if you eliminated the post-war stuff might help with the decision. I have a similar, though less extreme/advanced, feeling as my post '72 setssit there untouched. I have just about decided to sell on ebay or craigslist them as there seems little interest in looking at them or even in trading for them. Mac and all, a Canadian 2 cents worth which is close to par right now..same boat as many others..my kin have ZERO interest in my cards. That being said, some of my cards will be here with me as long as I am, like the Woodies. The '70's sit on a shelf in a box and I never look at them..and I don't HAVE anything much past 1980...I agree the '50's and '60's were the "classic era" for us some 60 year olds..some of those years just scream at me to be collected, but others, well, not so much. So if you make the move to unload, instead of doing the whole works of post-war, keep your favorite sets, and let some of the others go, and finance the pre-war stuff a bit that way. In my opinion not a good time to be selling though, what with the economy etc. I am amazed actually at how "cheap" some complete sets from the '70's are right now..and keep in mind we as a group tend to collect lesser condition, impacting the price realized even more. (I DO like nice cards though.shameless admission, just don't have all that many). The 1948 to 1980 cards seem to me the most relevant era for the hobby and my personal interests. I was lucky enough to have many cards from the 1930s as well but the prices of most pre-war cards are so high that it would be hard for me to get enthused about starting more pre-war sets today. It seems to me a "hobby" should be an affordable past time that doesn't involve "investments." However, one of the great things about collecting is that there is no right or wrong way to collect; you can collect whatever you want, according to Jefferson Burdick, the father of all card collectors. I've thought of getting rid of cards as well but it would be the post-1980 sets that take up room, have minimal nostalgic value (as well as minimal monetary value), but I wouldn't get much for them and I could get rid of an extra chair in storage and have enough room for the cards. One way I have stayed involved in completed sets, rather than tucking them in the darkness, is to go after variations and printing differences in those sets. The number of variations and printing differences is almost endless (if you like the minutiae), there usually isn't much of a premium involved, and you get to see the cards again. To me, it is more interesting than upgrading sets which is contra to the OBC condition philosophy anyway.but again everyone gets to collect whatever they want to. While the show is not what it once was, it is sttill usually a good show for me. Some long time dealers, no longer set up there, some because they have passed away (Oddball Larry, so you can imagine, I always checked out his table) or nolonger feel it is worth it (Harold, Mark Talbot's long time fav dealer). Meanwhile, mainly thanks to Mike Sandles (an OBC friendly dealer), I can usually find something. Mike had e-mailed me that he had some 1930s footballand hockey matchbooks, which is why I went to this show. My plan was to run in, check out Mike's stuff, blow through the show and head to the food bank I volunteer at. I ended up at the show for about 2 hours. Sure enough, I got about 10 matchbooks I needed, for 3% of book. Other hits from Mike, included a 1936 Goudey Wide Pen, 1940 Playball, 1944 Yankee stamp, a 1933World Wide Gum (Canadian Goudey), a 67 York Hockey disc, 2 1910 T-210 Old Mill. A series 2 & a series 3. The capper was a pair of 1958 Hires. Mikealso had a group lot of oddball for $7, that i was not about to argue with, and found a 1971 Bazooka FB I needed in there. Mike frequently gives me boxes of cards to pass around OBC. He apologized, that he lost an auction bid, for a box of low grade stuff, that he bid on for OBC, as a planned holiday gift. How many dealers are looking to buy a gift for OBC??? However, he did give me a 800 count box of off grade for OBC. He knows I love the miscuts, etc., so I found some of those in there. Most of the box was from the 70s, with some UV, but probably just as many older, from the 60s andeven some from the 50s, including a few 65 Topps FB. As I scanned throughthe box when I got home, I even found a single T-206 with a Tolstoi back! Remember, this was a gift box for OBC, and I am thrilled, I got one item for my true collection. I hope to find time, to check some lists, probably on Christmas. I only bought from 2 other dealers. I got a 1955 Topps Pin of Berra, 3 - 1935 Goudeys, (I only needed 2, looked them up wrong), to getme within 4 of completion, and a 1937 goudey Knot in the hole. The pin and 37 Goudey were my 3rd of each. Only other purchase was a 1955 Armour coin color variation. Not a bad haul for 2 hours. Over 2 dozen hits. Next Redford show is on January 9, and then the first Sunday in February 6 and March 6. That got me to thinking..many of you know that I work as an Investigator for the company that puts out LoJack for Laptops. I assure you the product works, I have had some wonderful recoveries, and superb collateral damage at times, including property stolen from the original B&E, meth labs, chop shops, warrant arrests, drugs etc. My success rate is MUCH higher than it ever was when I was a cop, somewhere around 75%. If your laptop surfaces in Mexico or North Vietnam though, be warned it is gone. Hope you backed up your hard drive. (Yes, I was a Vancouver cop, not a Mountie, let me point that out!) So...I went to our Marketing people and asked them what they might do for OBC. After explaining what we are about, and pointing out that probably the majority of us has a laptop (or more than one), they said I could get you 25% off if you wish to put the program on your laptops. I assure you there is nothing in this for me, no kickbacks, percentage, commission, etc. If any of you choose to sign up for it, if the worst happens and your laptop is gone, I make a rash promise that I will see to it that no stone is left unturned in your case. I hope you NEVER need the program. The program isn't very expensive to begin with, and it just got cheaper. And what a nice Christmas stocking stuffer. You can also use it on desktop computers, but crooks being the lazy creatures they are, don't steal them much any more, they like the portables. You can check the program out at www.absolute.com or just search Google for LoJack for Laptops. If you go to sign up, use the Promo Code Recovery20 to get the 25% off. I really wish I could have done better, but I was happy enough that they played nicely with my request. ================= To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com Date: Wed, 15 Dec 2010 00:04:34 -0500 (EST) From: Joshua Levine Subject: knocked an important line off the list and a site recommendation Hiya guys and gal... Uconn great Walt Dropo passed away at the age of 87 from natural causes. Dropo was a 3 sport star at Uconn and was one oftheir first basketball greats. His 20.7 scoring average still ranks 2nd all time for the school and had he not gone into baseball, he probably wouldhave been a Professional Basketball player. He was never able to duplicate his 1950 ROY season when he had 34 HR, 144 RBI and batted .322 (in only 136 games) but he did have a 13 year career andstill holds a share of the record for most consecutive hits with 12. I had the pleasure to met Dropo 10 years ago when he was the guest speaker at our little league banquet. Afterward he and some of the coaches got together at one of the coach's house. I broke out my 1957 set (which was about 80% complete at the time) and he went through and shared some stories about some of the players. And Joe Isaac mentioned to bring up this idea on the Ramblings server for the OBC-AC to possibly approve. I've been out of the loop in active trading for a few years, as I've replaced my baseball card collecting with... baseball card collecting. More specifically, I collect digital images of baseball cards, because I reached a point in my personal collection where I had all the cards I wanted (many courtesy of OBC generosity). With my kids rapidly approaching college age, I discovered that I couldn't afford both their educations and all the cards I was missing - but high-quality digital images were pretty much free. So, for the past half-dozen years or so, I've assembled what might be the largest collection of digital images of vintage sports and non-sports cards available anywhere, running a database and several PHP programs to manage the collection, with the ability to export these images to an autorun CD or DVD (that means if all goes well, it opens a browser automatically and shows the images project home page when the disk is inserted). Currently, I'm just short of full capacity on a standard DVD. My collection is over 4 gigabytes, over 132,000 images in more than 1800 different sets in six categories (baseball, football, basketball, hockey, boxing/golf, and non-sports), including checklists for almost 7000 sets. While there are modern sets included, the heavy emphasis is on vintage cards - popular, rare, and some you may have never heard of. The navigation scheme is pretty easy to follow. The image display uses the "lightbox" technology which can be seen at the PSA card site and some of the major auction sites - the page displayed in the browser goes dark, with a white box showing the card images to be displayed in a slide show. Most of the images are cards, but there are also many collectible photos, yearbooks, programs, media guides, press pins, uniforms, rings, magazines, and representative samples of card backs. The image organization and display can be run off the CD/DVD or copied to the computer's hard drive for direct access in standard Windows file systems. The image files and directories are named in a straight-forward manner, for example, the image for the Topps 1953 card of Satchel Paige is "53T 220 Paige.jpg" found in directory /Baseball/Topps/53Topps/. So anyone looking for an image of their favorite card, maybe to upload to Facebook (as I did with "53T 088 Feller.jpg" a few days ago) can find them very easily. It makes an excellent research tool, people can see the cards they're missing in their collections, and it can provide hours of fun. Where else can you find pictures of more than 1900 different Zeenuts cards? That's just a small part of the Baseball category. There's a single legal restriction I should mention: a card pricing website (cardpricer.com) licenses the exclusive right to display the Baseball images part of my collection on the Internet. I have ownership of all the images in all categories, and I have the right to distribute the images on CD and DVD media to individuals, just not over the Internet. So, it's not like I can host them for anyone to access on oldbaseball.com, because of cardpricer.com's exclusive Internet license. Let's not mess with that, please. What I'd like to do is make these images available to OBC members free of charge. That's correct - free of charge. It's not entirely unselfish, as it represents possibly thousands of hours of effort over the years; I would like to make sure the collection is shared with people who might enjoy it, and is also preserved so that it doesn't die on my hard drive if I get "hit by a truck." What I'm proposing to the OBC-AC is to ask if I could be partially reimbursed for the cost of CDs/DVDs (maybe no more than fifty cents each), postage (??? maybe a buck or two per disk), and disk mailers (??? really no idea how much these would run). I can make the collection available in the following formats: CDs: Football, Basketball, Hockey, Boxing/Golf, Non-Sports (one category per CD) DVDs: Any combination of two or more of the above, including Baseball The Baseball category won't fit by itself on a CD; there are more than 2.4 gigabytes of baseball cards and memorabilia alone so I need to go to a DVD for the Baseball part, or for the whole collection. If you've got one of those whiz-bang modern computers with ultra-dual-core processors and massive hard drives, things will run fast (especially if you copy it to your hard drive and set up a bookmark in your browser), otherwise, you might have to wait briefly the first time you use it while the browser loads the thumbnails and the actual requested images from the CD or DVD. I should probably also include a sheet describing the project and brief instructions on how to use it - need to make sure that if people ask for a DVD, they actually have a working DVD computer component (and not just a CD player). And it won't work if you stick it in a video DVD player to look at it on the TV set, either. I was hoping to just go ahead and send them out as a sort of Christmas surprise, but I'd need to know from everyone if they have a working computer DVD player, or if they want only specific collections on individual CDs. For example, Rittenberg will go nuts with the NonSports section. Also, for the current membership of 100+ people, the postage, mailers, and media might total more than I can spend at this time, as college applications for my son are due in a week or two. So, I'll be heads-down in helping him write essays and applying for financial aid until the end of the year, but in January 2011 we can start moving on this project. You might have access to better images of some of the cards in my project - if you're feeling generous, send them along to me and I'll include them in the collection. My goals are modest and not too far off: I want to get to two thousand different sets, and more than a hundred thousand images in the Baseball category. So, OBC-AC, think it over and let me know. Meanwhile, everybody else, we need to wait and let these guys make the decision before we start sending stuff around. If it's approved, we can take a survey and see who wants what, and how much it will cost to produce the whole thing. ================= To: wayne@deliafamily.net, OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com Date: Mon, 20 Dec 2010 23:24:52 -0500 (EST) From: Joshua Levine Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] Wayne's project proposal Wow Wayne! I've bought from TPV often in the past, and they always have items at the price/condition that we in OBC look for so I'm a bit disappointed with this development. EEK was my secret santa, and I think he pulled some OPC from his own collection to pass along to me. Four hits, one each from 67, 69, 73 and 77 - and all Tigers. EEK also throwsin three packs for me to tear into, all with vintage appeal. An Allen & Ginter pack, a t206 pack, and an OBAK pack. Unfortunately, no Red Sox or White Sox cards which is always the hope. Nice to see the vintage designs onthese uv cards. I thought the OBAKs were especially cool because all of the players pictured were from the 1800's. Fun reading! Thank you EEK! I need to update my bio, but wanted to send out an update to my friends here in OBC. I guess the biggest news is that I am retiring Dec 31st! As many of you know, I am an FAA air traffic controller, and I was supposed to retire last year due to my age (mandatory retirement at 56). Well I applied for, and was granted a one year extension. My birthday is Wednesday (#57), and Friday will be my last day, and I will retire with nearly 34 years of gov=92t service including my time in the military. I asked around and a few gave some interesting answers. The consensuswas that more people saved Mantles so there are just more of them around which drove the price down and made it easier to find. I also think that Topps featured Mantle in earlier series of cards which increased his availability too but that is just me spouting off and have done no research whatsoever with it. -----Original Message----- From: Richard To: OBC-Ramblings Sent: Thu, Dec 30, 2010 2:09 pm Subject: [OBC-Ramblings] right or wrong Is it harder to find inexpensive Ted Williams cards than Mantles? The important factor is the grade you want. I've found both very inexpensive but in true OBC grade. Overall, I'd say the Williams cards are cheaperthan the Mantles, with the exception being the 54 Bowman. I had the privilege and fun of interviewing Ken about ten years ago, since I had heard he lived not too far from me, in Whatcom County. Here's his obit from the Seattle Times. I will miss him...Mike Diamanti PS I have word docs that are transcriptions of my talks with him if anyone is interested. Remembering the modesty of Ken Lehman, former UW coach and major-leaguer Ken Lehman dies at 82 By Christopher Wells Special to The Seattle Times PREV of NEXT [image: Ken Lehman] Ken Lehman Ken Lehman, a former major-league pitcher and University of Washington baseball coach, died Dec. 4 at the age of 82. Tommy Lasorda, a former teammate of Lehman and a Hall of Fame manager, said Lehman was a special man. "He was a tremendous guy that knew how to pitch in the big leagues," Lasorda said. "A typical Dodger player; hard-nosed, and when he was on that mound, he was tough. Outstanding guy. I was shocked when I heard about his death." Lehman pitched five years in the majors, finishing with a 14-10 record and a 3.91 earned-run average. Born in Seattle on June 12, 1928, Lehman spent his youth in Kirkland, where he attended Kirkland High School. At age 16, while playing for the Kirkland Shipyard semipro baseball team, he was discovered by the Brooklyn Dodgers, who signed him in 1946. By signing with the Dodgers, he turned down an offer to play baseball for the Huskies. Appearing destined to crack the Dodgers' major-league roster by the end of the 1950 season, Lehman instead enlisted in the Army and fought in the Korean War. After a year and a half in the service, Lehman made his major-league debut with Brooklyn in 1952 as a starter. Lehman pitched two scoreless innings in Game 2 of the World Series that year, against the Yankees. Lehman spent the next three years in the minor leagues and was back with the Dodgers in 1956 as a reliever. During the 1957 season, he was sold to the Baltimore Orioles, with whom he posted the two best years of his career. Despite success out of the bullpen, Lehman was put on waivers by Baltimore and selected by the Philadelphia Phillies. He spent two seasons with the Phillies in the minors before cracking a major-league roster, for the last time, in 1961. After another season in the minors in 1962, Lehman retired. One of Lehman's three children, Leeza Millman, said Lehman had an immense personality, full of many great stories from his career, which he had a knack for telling. She also said it wasn't something he would boast about. "He never brought up any of that kind of stuff unless people asked about it," Millman said. "He wasn't like, 'Oh, I used to play pro ball. Did you know I know so-and-so? Did you know I played with Jackie Robinson? Did you know this? Did you know that?' "If somebody would find out, or send him a letter or something, he would be happy to talk to somebody about it, but he was never the first one to say that, so you never thought anything about him." Following his playing days, Lehman and his wife, Patricia =97 whom he met in Montreal in the minor leagues =97 moved to Seattle, where Lehman took over the UW baseball coach position in 1964. He remained there until 1971 when he retired with a record of 96-177. With every facet of his baseball career over, Lehman and Patricia =97 with children Bruce, Leeza and Mark =97 moved to Whatcom County. Post-baseball, Lehman spent the first couple months working as a logger in Alaska, but soon returned to Washington, where he took a job at the Mount Baker School District as a bus driver and field-house janitor. He retired after 31 years. Lehman and Patricia lived with their daughter, Leeza, for the past several years, until Patricia died Nov. 11. With Patricia gone, Lehman died three weeks later. He left behind his children, 11 grandchildren and three With all of his achievements in life, it is easy to get caught up in Lehman's triumphs, but Mark Lehman said people close to his father will remember much more. "Players, the kids he coached, teammates =97 you couldn't find a person that didn't like my dad," Mark said. "You couldn't find a person who wouldn't do anything in the world for my dad." ================= Date: Fri, 31 Dec 2010 16:02:33 -0800 (PST) To: Alistair Thomson , From: Glenn Codere Subject: Happy New Year from Glasgow, Scotland!! It's no neater, in fact having more than two guys in the store at the same time is difficult because the proprietor, while a very good guy, needs to clean this place up! Cards are literally underfoot as you walk around the store in 12 inch aisles sideways(failing every fire code known) But the real story is that while browsing, I found some off-condition 62T'sand bought all he had once I noticed some green tints mixed in the stack. Now I really only need a couple high numbers to complete the set, but I am lacking some of Grant's Greenies and Variations... I hit my own list just 4 times but built my stash of 62GreenTints for you guys...yes you OBC variants who just have to have the master set can't go w/o these ugly tints! I need these green variety cards: Green 113, Green 121, Green 128, Green 133, Green 156, Green 158, Green 159, Green 166, Green 167 , Green 182, Green 185, Green 188, Green 196, Green 197 Regular card needs are just these: 132b 172 458b 462b 572 592 594 And maybe Pumpsie Green #153, whose two binder slots look like maybe I havetwo green tints and no regular version, but they are pretty hard for me totell. I've got other commons too from 1962 so if you are just starting the set and don't mind a few doggeared corners, I'll send you some from this latest booty of mine. Stay tuned for another email soon detailing my failed attempt to fill in my1966 set, which y'all could benefit from too!! That includes a few HOFers. OBC Forever!
