(Is there anybody from The Big Red Machine missing now?) Welcome to the HallGeorge, and thanks for playing John, my apologies for being so slow. Thanks as always to Wayne Delia for taking care of the website stuff. The boring Grant stuff- well, we finally got our dream house in beautiful downtown Powell River, B.C. in July, and had been living out of boxes for almost a year now. Well, it isn't much of a downtown, there are only 6 traffic lights in town and you get really pissed if you hit a red one. I can't believe I have been retired from the Vanc. PD for coming up on 6 years now....I guess I missed a bit of it, I have started up the Crimestoppers program here in town, not that there is much crime to deal with...there was a homicide a few weeks back, but the town concensus was that she had it coming. I think that was the first one in about 10 years. There may have been others, but no one noticed. I'm still working, chasing stolen computers on the internet for LoJack for Laptops, and still having a lot of fun doing it. A few of you have had the pleasure of meeting The Dragon Lady, she retired too and is now working with me, as if she doesn't get enough of me anyways. The beauty is that we getto work from home, or when we go over to Blood Island (for you you newer guys, the real name is Savary Isand, and there's a history there), we haven't gotten high-tech enough to get a phone, but we do have internet access via Back to the card front, I guess my days of card shows are pretty much done,I'll never see one in this town, and I have no drive to go back to Vancouver for one, not that there has been a good card show there for some 20 years. So I guess the Seattle/Tacoma Dome show is the only real one I'll get toagain, assuming that Java Mocha Diamanti guarantees me a place to crash. Other than that, EvilBay will be my only place to play besides OBC. And speaking of EvilBay...Revenue Canada is now coming after sellers, demanding their piece of the pie....maybe I'll slip under their radar since I haven't been active for a couple of years or so, except for selling stuff for friends. During basketball season, our sports anchor would turn in scores of collegebasketball games to the Chyron operator (the Chyron was the character generator - any words, anchor names, scores, etc ythat appeared on-screen were created on the Chyron.) Anyhow, Mr. Sports Anchor turns in a score of a game being played by Old Dominion. But, he abbreviated Old Dominion as "Old Dom." The Chyron op decided she had room to spell out what she thought the entire name of the school was - and thus we got, on screen, live on TV, the score of the "Old Domination" game. I was directing, so I was talking the whole time - let me tell ya, when you're laughing, it's tough to direct! Even funnier - a couple of years later, and a new Chyron operator, the exact same thing happened. Happy weekend OBC--
Just noticed this lot on Ebay--roughly $20 buy it now  (postage included) for 87 1969 Topps cards included Hank Aaron, Bench, Banks, Neikro, Aparacio, league leaders, Joe Morgan--with a bunch of commons.  Seemed reasonable money when you include Hank and Johnny--but that would be your call.

Six of the team members examined every detail of their new Ebbets Field Flannels duds Tuesday: blue caps printed with Iraqi flags, custom-made jerseys with "Iraq" on the backs, gray pants and old-school stirrup socks. "I never dreamed we'd have something like this," said Bashar al-Salah, the team's captain. "Now we're a real baseball team." The 20 uniforms from Ebbets Field Flannels, a Seattle manufacturer of vintage baseball uniforms, were part of an outpouring of donations that followed a July news report that described the struggles of the startup team, which at the time shared a single softball bat, a few old balls and some worn-out gloves. Uniforms were only a dream. Since the report =97 which gained a wider audience when MSNBC's Rachel Maddow picked it up and appealed for help =97 the team has received cleats, baseballs, gloves, bats, helmets and an official rule book. After watching the Maddow show, Jerry Cohen, president of Ebbets Field Flannels, e-mailed Maddow, asking how he could contribute, and Maddow passed the offer on to McClatchy. "I just thought this was a great chance to share something when we saw that these guys didn't have anything," Cohen said at the time. While the players, coaches and sports officials were thrilled with the donations, the head of the baseball federation balked at what he called charity and held up the handover of the goods. Corruption is rampant in the new Iraq, with millions of dollars siphoned from government ministries with little or no accountability. Players and coaches feared the donated uniforms would disappear if they were delivered directly to the federation. Once a tentative agreement was reached between the team and the federation, McClatchy handed over the uniforms to a delegation of six players. "On behalf of the whole team, I would like to thank all the donors for everything they've done for the team," coach Hamza Madlool said. "This will have a big effect on the players. They feel like a real baseball team." Team members said they need to build up experience by playing other more established teams in the region. Yeah, I was psyched...and then they arrived, and I jumped up to delighted, because most of them are in really nice shape. The majority weren't hits, though I did knock the list down to 76, which is huge progress for me. I even had a bunch of (brace yourself) upgrades. Now I've got a decent number of dupes to repay many, since I exist in OBC in a constant state of debt (not unlike our government). I was checking lists and comparing cards (which is better, a small ink spoton the front or a crease halfway across the card horizontally?) when I discovered that I had both variations of #53, Don Lenhardt. I've pondered thevariations question and have concluded that my enjoyment in collecting derives from 1)my love of baseball and interest in baseball players, 2)the history these cards represent and are (they tell of an era and are themselves artifacts of that era), 3)the pleasure in gathering all the pieces of a set. In that order, and with 1 and 2 much stronger than 3. It matters to me that I have a card of each player and team in a set, not how many ***'s appear on the back. I can appreciate the joy of the hunt and the sense of completion some of you have, but green tints and gray backs and white letters just don't excite me. But then I started looking at these two cards and something way back in my head murmured, "Hmmm. It would be interesting to have ALL of them..." Yeah. This way lies madness. But I don't know if I'm going to send that "other" card off or not. My first impression from the show...quiet. I haven't been to the final day of a show in quite awhile, but was pretty shocked to see so few people. It never really picked up either...just a slow day I guess. There were a lot of great cards in the room, but prices were up from the usual high levels, fully to the outrageous levels. I guess Ken stopped by earlier and grabbed all the deals? I only saw Richard Kimball from the OBC contingent...and not many obc dealers either. Until the last 10 minutes, I had only purchased one $4 card...(72 opc mays IA). John Goodman, who provided the big goudey lot at the national, helpedfill the void though...with a slabbed 1915 cracker jack common, and a t204. So three cards was going to be it for the show...but I decided to make one last pass. I had been eyeing a 54 Bowman Ted Williams. Stopped by and asked about it...got a fair price, but made a low ball offer still...and was accepted (slow show might have had something to do with it). Never expected to land the 54 Bowman Williams, but nice to polish of those variations. Lauren found her dream laptop. Hello All, Prompts go out to Ron Perry who invited me last week to see the TIGERS play the Twinkees over the past few days. Yesterday,I arrived at the stadium at about 4:50 and met Ron and his Wayne State University professor George froma few years ago standing outside ofComerica Park gates with about 3,000 other fans waiting for the gates to open. Last night was a special 25 year anniversary of the 1984 World Champion TIGERS and the first 10,000 in the park would receive a replica `84 TIGERS road jersey, hence thousands of fans had circled the park in rather crummy rain soaked conditions. Once inside the park we opted for a photo opp with Sparky Anderson, Roger Craig, Dick Traciewski and Willie Hernandez and then we made our way over to an area where former TIGERSwere answering fan questions. Some how we positioned ourselves in the area where the players would be exiting the stage and making their way out of the rain. As a result I was about to shake hands with Kirk Gibson, Juan Berringer, Willie Hernandez, Dave Rozema, Doug Bair and Rod Allen -Pretty Anyways, the rain kept falling and by 7:30 they had called off the game so we stopped bya local watering hole and tipped back an adult beverage and made plans to return today at Noon for the rescheduled game. Since we were done so early Ron decided to drive back home instead of stay with a friend in nearby Ypsilanti. Today I made it to the park and our seat 22 rows above the TIGERS dugout about 10 minutes before the first pitch at 12:05 and began to enjoy some meaningful baseball in late September. Ron arrived by the 3rd inning with a surprise -his wife Marlene. To this point I had never met Marlene so it was special to meet the person who keeps Ron on the straight and narrow. The game went into extra innings and the home town heroes did not fare well suffering a 3-2 loss to the dreaded Twinkees. So we made our way out of the stadium and off to a local eatery for some dinner and conversation. We fought over the tab and Ron won the battle so hats off again to my friend from Mid -Michigan for picking up the tab for dinner. On ourway back to the ballpark for the evening game we had to find an "extra" ticket because we only had 2 for the evening game. Now those of you that know of Mr. Perry's skill in procuring a deal at various card shows will have to appreciate what happens next. We approach a street "dealer" who is in conversation with another customer for an extra single ticket and the guy says "hold on I got some" and Ron says "I want one for 5 bucks" andthe dealer say "No way buddy". But the other "customer" says "Wait asecond - I might be able to help", so we wait a moment. The next thing you know the guy hands Ron a ticket and says "You guys enjoy the game". It turns out the ticket is a $1 complimentary ticket but it gets Roninto the park for the OBC special price - FREE. The ticket was for aseat just a few sections over from Ron's season tickets so we all sat together anyway. Only Ron Perry gets such deals (well maybe Mike Rich). The evening contest was a hard fought victory for the TIGERS who continue to battle for the divisional crown and a berth in the playoffs. It has been many years since I attended a double-header especially since major league baseball pretty much "banned" them from regular scheduling. The company of the Perry's made the experience all that much better as I had a wonderful day. I can think of no better way to play "hooky" from work. Thanks Ron and Marlene. BE WELL!!! Banned doubleheader Cant blame anyone but the owners on this one theydo it this way so the can get revenue. Red Sox were suppose to been the ones starting it because Fenway was so small ( before expanding it). Greedy bastards like Calvin Griffith ran with the idea as baseball was his only source of income. Now we only see these doubleheaders on occasions like yesterday last week of season or last time team is in town. My two cents worth Baseball only culpability is a commissioner who last descion ever made was to bring the Pilots to Milwaukee. In a message dated 9/30/2009 12:04:36 A.M. My aunt has asked me to sell her cards for her. My uncle Jim died a couple years ago, and he had a nice little collection going. There were 400+ baseball cards, 400+ football cards, and about 60-70 nonsport cards. They are almost all from 1963-1965, with a few baseball cards from 1956-61. But there are some doozies in there... a 63 Mantle, 56 Koufax, 63-64-65 Clementes, 64 Rose, 57 Drysdale and so on. There are also a lot of high numbered 63s. Oh, and there's Jim Brown, Johnny Unitas, Fran Tarkenton, Frank Gifford, Bart Starr, Mike Ditka... Anyway, I have been spending the last few days going through them, scanningthem, trying to decide how much to ask, etc... Over the next couple days I will be posting pictures for all the lots, but for now I've attached a picture of nine that will hopefully catch the interest of many of you. The auction will start tomorrow, October 1st. The exact time has yet to bedetermined, as I still have some work to do, but I should be able to finish up after youth group tonight. This marks the last Bob Parker #5 on my type list, a milestone of some note. I've been through a ton of oddball boxes over the years and seen plenty of his over-sized cards, but finally closed out the type cards this year thanks to eBay and the National. In the 70s and 80s, Bob printed a bunch of card sets featuring illustrated player portraits, bios, and highlight cartoons. (They remind me of over-sized 1938 Goudeys.) He (and the contemporary Robert Laughlin) stand out in both baseball illustration and oddball card issues. Their distinctive art styles and willingness to self-produce unusual sets (though Laughlin partnered with Fleer multiple times) really set them apart. This links to a scan of the Bender card: http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/mvnB7MjUN7-UhhV7y2hoEA?authkey=Gv1sRgCLiToIW53eySkAE&feat=directlink Check out your SCD for other Parker sets--he turned out several interesting ones.
