I know in the past when I first starteddoing the wantlist admin that a simple refresh (F5) would do the trick. Idon't see anything out of the ordinary behind the scenes as I ran a test to see how things were working. One other thing: when you are done updating and you get to the Updating Larry Gersbach's Wantlist, there are 3 options - Display updated want list, Return to OBC directory and Return to OBC home page. I suggest you do not use the back browser button as this may not allow your updated list to appear - this occurred on my wife's webpage in the past after a purchase was made and a similar thing may be happening hereas well. Anyway give this a try and let me know how all works for you. Anyone else using the OBC server for their wantlists may try this also. --- On Sun, 8/2/09, larrygers@aol.com wrote: From: larrygers@aol.com Subject: [OBC-Ramblings] OBC site updating To: webmaster@oldbaseball.com Cc: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com Date: Sunday, August 2, 2009, 3:49 PM To whom it may concern Just came back from the National in Cleveland. This year's event was no exception. I flew in on Wednesday...hoping to find some early deals. First stop was the Hotel...much improved room this time, but a little inconvenient. I ended up taking the hotel shuttle back to the airport, then catching the convention center shuttle to the show. A number of OBC'ers were already at the show. Many of the details are a blur, but it was great seeing everyone...especially those OBC'ers I met for the first time. Also great to see the return of Steve Rittenberg, and his bride Gina. It was great seeing you both. A few card highlights from the show... Kurt T. provided the first big hit of the show...a relatively inexpensive 52 Topps high number of Pee Wee Reese. Mr. Rittenberg tracking down a 53T mantle for $90 from OBC dealer Estes (asI recall). Steve also tracked down two of the remaining three (Klu and Spahn), leaving me to find Vern (not Gene) Stephens to finish off the 53T's (though I am now doing bio variations). Rittenberg also handed over an early birthday present in the form of a Billy Southworth. Tim Newcomb traded me another tough 52 Topps high number---Dick Williams. Although he also showed me a great M116 Lajoie that he picked up for small money...quite jealous of that find. Dealer John Goodman provided the biggest purchase of the show...a huge stack of 33, 34, 35 and 38 Goudeys. The 38's included a Feller and Mungo to finish off the one-of-every-player set. The 34's mean I will be adding that set soon. I was tempted by the Dimaggio he had as well, but ended up passing. Prominent Ebay'er Just Collect actually brought some OPC to the show. Pricing snafu aside, managed to hammer the 75 and 72 opc lists. Other random purchases include a 52T high number Yvars, 4 t202 hits, all the remaining 54 bowman variations (except for the hodges). A pretty good show overall, though I did pass over a few good ones. The highlight of course was the swap...pretty good turnout this year. Thanks again to the organizers. Cards were flying everywhere as usual. It's always great to see OBC'ers in action. Spike, Rob and I tried to recapture our youth by tearing into some 87 Sportflics provided by Rittenberg. Various debates and stories entertained us all. I think Gina may have been a bit overwhelmed, but hope she enjoyed herself. Thanks to everyone for a great I'm already looking forward to Baltimore next year. I believe the G's won the alphabet National lottery--JS Gray, Spike Glidden, Rob Gioia, Gersh, and Kent Goto followed closely by the R's Rich, Reed and Rittenberg (who I didn't see for anywhere close to enough time)and the M's Mead, Mroz and Mandell.  Ant, Richard Dingman, Tom Housley, John Leroux, Ron Perry, Chris Stufflestreet, Mark Talbot and Mac Wubban filled out my National which was also too short.  I know there were other OBCers in attendance--but I believe I have included everyone I ran into?
I tried to go Thursday and then again on Friday---didn't make it either day.  Instead I decided to head down on Saturday and stayed until about half way through the swap before I drove back to western NY.  Great time--really was hoping to find the last three Hires Root Beer cards I need (Fernandez, Walker and Snider) but didn't find any of them.  I was able to trim 10-1962 Jellos off the list--picked up from five different dealers.  Also found a short print Canadian post (down to 14) and a few 1950 Royal desserts.
You really do feel like the proverbial kid in the candy store. I think I will let Ron Perry tell about the best deal I heard at the show (outside of Mac's $90 Mantle) that he picked up in a $ box.
Great fun and great to see and meet everyone--

Managed to catch 4 of the 5 days of the show, missing only Friday, due to needing to catch up on work and a certain amount of work-related burnout. It was my first National, and really only the second decent-sized show I'd ever attended. I expected to find it overwhelming, and was not disappointed. It was huge, noisy, busy, distracting and fascinating. One helpful feature is that, though designed obviously for expected big crowds, the aisleswere very wide and there was never the sense of crowding that I am used to. My sense was that fewer people than expected attended, but still every kind of collector and enthusiast was there, young and old, wheeled and ambulatory, buying everything from cards to comics, and including photos, autographs, clothing, balls and even stadium seats. One quiet man was sitting behind an empty naked looking table selling collection insurance. If one wanted an easy time setting up and breaking down, he had it. I was grateful for the presence of OBCers who helped me navigate and make sense of the scene. Particularly Spike, who endured gracefully the brunt ofmy many questions. And the Swap session saturday night was a blast, even better than I expected, when I experienced the OBC informal rhythm of helping everyone to get whatever would help their collections. I feel now so much more prepared for the next big show, having gotten my feet wet, that I am eagerly looking forward to Baltimore, and planning how I will be able to attend. Meanwhile, from a combination of envelopes passed during the show, and of cards handed out from dupes boxes at the swap, I wish to thank, in random order, the following great traders and great folks whom I have just recently had the joy of meeting, for their wonderful contributions: Steve Rittenberg: for a 1952 Al Rosen, 1953 Rosen, Jensen and one other, and a 1956, Chris Stufflestreet : for a 1952, 3 1959s including Podres, a 1966, 1970 Bench, and a 1972 Phillies Team card, Mark Talbot: for a 1953 Bowman #1 Williams, a 1954 Bowman #1 Rizzuto, and 3 John Scott Gray: for a 1953 Bowman high #, Kent Goto: for a 1953, 3 1954 Bowmans, a 1960 McCovey, Red Sox team card and an All-Star, a 1962, and 3 1963s high #s including Fox and Rookie Stars, Tom Housley: for a 1954 Bowman, and a 1973, Rob Gioia: for a 1954 Bowman, a 1956, a 1959, a 1964, a 1966 checklist, and a 1968, Mike Rich: for a 1956, and 2 1969 high #s including Williams, Mac Wubben: for a 1959 Clemente (!), a 1970 Bench All-Star, and 2 1972s including Clemente and Carlton, Larry Gersbach: for a 1960, 2 1964s, a 1971 Carew, and 2 1972 high #s, Ant Arbeeny: for a 1962 Martin, 2 1963s including a high # checklist, a 1966 #1 Willie Mays, a 1970 last card Reichardt, and 3 1971 high #s, Ron Hoehne: for 3 1964s, 2 1970s including Yaztremski, a 1970 high #, and a and John Leroux: for a 1966, and 2 1972s including Ryan. Mike Mroz agreed to drive down with me. I grabbed the keys to a company car and we were on the road around 6:30 or so. We listened to a poorly played game between the Indians and our Tigerson the way there, while telling stories. This is at least the 4th time I have either traveled to or from a National with a different OBCer. Once inthe Cleveland area, we finally stopped for dinner. We found the Howard Johnsons motel with little trouble. Mike had made the reservations (to thosethat know my experiences in selecting restaurants, they will be surprised that it was Mike Mroz that arranged for the room). Upon check in, a soldier was complaining at the front desk about the cable TV. We got our room assignment and took the elevator up. The elevator had ripped wallpaper, was dirty and empty wrappers had been thrown above the grate for the lighting. This was a precurser for what we experienced. The hallway was not vacuumed, the black out blinds, did not close all the way, room safe, not only didnot work, but did not close, so you could bank your knee on it on the way to the bathroom, a stain in the ceiling from aleak (we were on the 3rd and highest floor), a wallplate was missing over the electrical outlet, the chair in the room was stained, but the best was when we turned down my bed cover, the sheet had a big oily looking footprint on it. Strange footprint asit appeared to have 6 toes! Mike took a picture of it. Of course they had no other rooms and no housekeeping available. We asked ofr a clean sheetthat we would come down and get and change ourselvs, but they had no cleansheets. They told us they would run a load and we could come and get it in about an hour. 2 hours later, they had clean sheets for us. The continental breakfast was so insufficient and scary, we went next door to the BobEvans for breakfast. Fortunately, by pure chance, we ran into Larry Kerrigan there. Larry gave us another badge, which made entering the show even easier as we did not need to meet up with many other OBCers to get in. Saturday was a typical whirlwind, made it through about 1/4 of the show, met up with Steve and Gina for dinner and then onto the swap. Met Ant and Richard Dingman, plus VCTer Ron Hoehne for teh first time. I think I knew everyone else. Was given some nice OBC packages that were recognized on the Thanks server. Afet the swap, Mike and I headed back to the motel and stayed up to 1:45 looking through and marking off pick ups from the day. Finally grabbed some sleep and got up early to finish marking off the pick ups. Bob Evans and back to the show. Made it through another 2/3 of the show, so I did not quite get to all the tables. Certainly never spent time I would have liked at a few tables. Never even saw Ron Estes or spent time at Chandy's table. I helped OBC dealer Mike Sandles take his stuff out to his vanafter the show ended, so once again closed the show down. Chris Stufflestreet tried to match me, but I was there last. I was only able to finish a single set, 1978 Papa Geno Discs. I got within1 of my 1938 Churchman's Boxing (#12 Braddock still needed). I think 4 orso sets went from have lists to want lists: 1941 Double Play, T-206, 1960Nu Card Hi Lites and possibly 1964 Bazooka Stamps, 1956 Adventure Gum, 1949 Eureka Stamps. A number of type cards plus my 2nd (or more) hits to manysets, means the wantlists are getting BIGGER, not smaller. I stayed in town through Tuesday for work and stopped by John McLaughlin's,as per my usual, on the way home. Another great National. Nex tyear I hope attend for the full week and meet even more OBCers. The IT job I took up here whenI moved to Vermont a few years has been very challenging for me, particularly since I still deal with chronic health issues pretty much every day. Thus, I've been spending what little leisure time and energy I have withmy family. I'm scheduled for a hospital procedure in a couple months that hopefully will allow me to gain more energy and live a more comfortable existence. Anyway, I'm hoping to be a little more active then I have been lately. Reading the OBC Ramblings recently re: the National, etc. has started to get me excited about collecting again. So I decided to re-think my collecting habits a little bit. I just updated my wantlist. I've decided to concentrate on Braves and Giants cards for the early issue sets (like tobacco and 1950's). Primarily because those are the two teams I've followed all my life and the older sets are just getting too tough for me to even think about ever completing. I also added former University of Georgia football players cards since I'm a UGA alumn and I'm still a rabid Dawgs fan :) BTW...I just watched a neat documentary called "Harvard Beats Yale 29-29". Very cool if you're a big college football fan like me. So...I'll start trying to hit some wanlists and get a little cardboard action going again. Thanks! Go Braves! This year=E2=99s adventure began early Friday morning as Ron Perry made his way to Sterling Heights and we were on our way. Ron was kind enough to do the driving and we made it through Detroit rush hour withouttoo much trouble. The trip to Cleveland lasted 3 hours or so but seemed much shorter as the conversation was brisk with anticipation for a great weekend. Our first stop was the Cleveland Indian apparel store to pick up the game tickets where Liz the ticket clerk talked me into the =E2=9CAll you can eat=E2=9D deal (more on that later). We arrived at the IX Center about Noon and were quickly met by Spike and Mac with the OBC badges and made our way in to the show. Steve Rittenberg and his wife Gina soon arrived and Mac and Spike accompanied Gina to the Rock & Roll H all of Fame so Steve and I assisted othersthroughout the day with the badges. Anthony Arbeeny had been c all ing me and I met him for the first time at the West Entrance with my badge followed by Tom Housley and we made our way to Kurt Toudot=E2=99s table where a full compliment of OBC=E2=99er awaited our arrival. I made my first purchase of the weekend from Kurt picking up a `52 Topps Joe Page (a Top 10 card), some `72 Topps HI number FB and a few other items. The rest of my afternoon I spent wandering around hunting down the guyswho were going to the b all game and scoping out the place. I spentsome time talking with VCT member Mike Mackie and then later had a nice conversation with Ed Hutchinson, also of VCT and another individual I had metfor the first time. As I wandered around I eventu all y caught up with Larry Gersbach, Kent Goto, John Scott Gray, Rob Gioia, Bob Reed with son Connor and Greg Konkoff of Dugout Traders to drop off tickets for the game. Greg was also a new face for me adding to the number of traders that I have had the pleasure of meeting in person. Before we knew it the time had reached 5 pm and Ron, Larry and I made our way to the Plaza Hotel to check in. No sooner did we get settled we got a c all from Steve Rittenberg who somehow got left behind at the IX Center so we picked him up, slipped by his hotel room and then the 4 of us were off to Progressive field for the TIGERS / Indianscontest. We got onto the park and were making our way to our seats just in time for our National Anthem and met up with the group of 14 who were waiting for us at the park. We got the =E2=9CAll you can eat=E2=9D deal so the first inning was spent at picnic tables watching the game on monitors as we ate hot dogs, nachos, peanuts, popcorn and soda. While gorging ourselves I had the opportunity to meet another trader for the first time, Ron Hoehne of VCT who joined us at the game. From our seat you could see it all and we certainly got our exercise making our way to the top two rows in the section. The banter, companionship, weather and atmosphere was perfect for a Friday night b all game. As I was heavily clad in TIGER gear it was easy to see where my all egiances were so I had to put up with some comments from the locals but there were many other TIGER faithful (including Ron Perry) to keep me company. There were only 4 of us remaining by the 8 th inning as it appeared as if thehome team was headed toward victory but the TIGERS would kick up their heals in the 9 th inning tying the game and sending it into extra innings. As Ron, JSG and I gleefully enjoyed the =E2=9Cfree baseb all =E2=9D Larry was pleading with either team to put it away so that he could be done with it all . In the bottom of the 14 th the Indians did just that and sent us all packin=E2=99 but not before I had consumed 6 hot dogs, 2 nachos, 5 bags of peanuts, 5 sm all popcorns and many sodas. The hot dogs were perhaps the worse dogs I=E2=99ve ever gotten at a b all park but were made palatable by a local made brown mustard but I=E2=99m not likely to consume another hot dog for some time. Steve Rittenberg and Rob Gioia both plowed down 7 dogs taking whatever bragging rights were avaialble for such a feat, Rob probably consumed the most food possible for the evening. We made our way to the car while the Friday night fireworks were lighting up the sky and made it out of the downtown Cleveland area before the crowd. After dropping JSG off at his hotel Ron, Larryand I stopped off at a local watering hole to down a couple pitchers of beer and relax a bit. We ended up closing up the joint but not before the manager of the place came over and made herself very comfortable at ourtable. As we made our way to Ron=E2=99s car she came running outto say goodbye to us, taking Cleveland hospitality to an extreme. The next day started off with a nice breakfast at a local eatery and then to the show for some serious card shopping. I spent the majority of my budget on Saturday picking up a `56 Topps Teddy B all game from Ron Estes buddy Bob, a stack of `50 Bowman from Roger Newfeldt, a stack of `53 Topps variations and HI=E2=99s from Wayne Johnson, astack of Exhibits from J.D.Heckathorn, a bunch of =E2=9Coddb all =E2=9D stuff from Dick Zimmerman and my final purchase of the day from Randy Kniffen netted me a `54 Bowman =E2=9CSay Hey=E2=9D kid among other items to close out a very successful day of =E2=9Cbargain hunting=E2=9D. Along the way I met Richard Dingman for the first time, ran into Gary Mandell and Tim Newcomb, spent some time with Bill Malson, bumped into Peter Mead and visited with the Chris Stufflestreet family. From a successful day at the show it was off to the swap location that Rob Gioia andKent Goto had secured at their hotel. In attendance were members Anthony Arbeeny, Richard Dingman, Larry Gersbach, Rob Gioia, Spike Glidden, Kent Goto, John Scott Gray, Tom Housley, John Leroux, Gary Mandell, Peter Mead, Mike Mroz, Ron Perry, Bob Reed with son Connor, Mike Rich, Steve Rittenberg with wife Gina, Chris Stufflestreet with daughter Melissa, Mac Wubben,Ron Hoehne from VCT and myself. Show dealers Randy Kniffen and BillHenderson also joined us and a few =E2=9Cgoodie=E2=9D boxes were provided by Mike Sandles. We didn=E2=99t bust up till after midnightand as always the swap was a highlight of the weekend. Cardboard, conversation, food and fellowship were in abundance and I think it=E2=99ssafe to say that a good time was had by all . Ron and I made our way back to =E2=9CThe Plaza=E2=9D and stayed up playing with cardboard into the wee hours of the morning. Sunday was upon us so Ron and I caught a quick =E2=9CContinental Breakfast=E2=9D at the hotel, checked out and made ourway to the show. At the swap everybody received a badge who wanted one so there was no scramble at the gate. Having spent most of my budget on Saturday I was bargain bin diving on Sunday and found some treasures including some `73 TCMA All Stars, `78 & `79 Stop & Go FB, Renata Glasso and other unusual items that I like. I visited Chandy Greenholt, Bill Henderson, Randy Rothrock, Kevin Savage and Ty Firestone at their tables and did some shopping. The big purchase for me was a group of about (8) T-218=E2=99s from the dealer sharing Randy Kniffen=E2=99s table to work on the master set of those. By 3 p.m. we were on the road on our way to John McLaughlin=E2=99s home to meet up for the evenings Toledo Mud-Hens game. The group of Mike Mroz, Ron Perry and I made it to the McLaughlin home by about 5 p.m. where John=E2=99s wife Ranaye had prepared a wonderful lunch for us. We visited for about 45 minutes to an hour and the 6 of us made our way to Fifth/Third field for the Bison/Mud-Hens contest. The TIGER farm club made a very good showing with pitcher Chris Lambert throwing a complete game shutout for 118 pitches. The 119 th pitch delivered a 2 out run producing double in the ninth ending Lamberts night and bringing on Rapata for the final out of the 6 to 1 contest. The game took 2 hours 5 minutes and we were on the road for Detroit before 9 p.m. =E2=93 a great time by all and nice to spend a little of our time with the McLaughlin=E2=99s. Lively conversation consumed the final hour or so of our trip and Mike Mroz dropped me off at the Sterling Heights residence by 10:30 or so. It was a fun filled weekend with plenty of opportunity to spend time with fellow collectors and I got to meet Anthony Arbeeny, Richard Dingman, Ron Hoehne and Greg Konkoff for the first time. Atotal of 25 members were there and my only regret was not meeting Chris Lozipone who was there on Saturday and Sunday. I=E2=99m looking forward to the festivities next year in Baltimore and may be making a family vacation out of the opportunity perhaps spending some time in our nation=E2=99s capitol. To all the guys who made the National such a good time I thank you and to those of you in the Baltimore area who have not attended in some time (or ever) I sure hope to see you next year. BE WELL!!! REGARDS ------------------------ MARK ================= Date: Sun, 09 Aug 2009 21:57:20 -0000 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: "mikesportsfan" Subject: nibble nibble When I get together with members of OBC, my wantlists tend to be the subject of humor. I never met a vintage sport set that I did not want to collect. While I am a set builder, I have not been in a hurry to finish most sets. I am not, what I refer to as a "checkbook" collector. That is someone that whips out the checkbook and pays whatever is necessary to finish a set.Since I collect so many sets, I just pick up whatever is the best buy at the show I am at. Therefore, I tend to nibble away at sets. My philosophy has been to get a few here and a few there, maybe get a decent size lot on occassion, and pretty soon a set is within range. Thanks to contributions at the swap and/or National pick-ups, 4 sets switched from have lists to being just over 1/2 way done: T-206 (yes the big one, is now 51% complete), 1941 Double Play (prices are going up, hope I can get closer before it gets too pricey), 1949 Eureka Stamps (a big purchase puts this at 2/3 done), and1964 Wheaties Stamps (26/50). The 1960 NuCard Hi Lites issue made it to exactly the 1/2 way mark. I thought a 6th set may have made it, but my 1964Bazooka Stamp collection is at 49 of 100. I do have some dupes, so if anyone has any in their collection or type collection, I hope you will let me know and maybe I can add this to the over 1/2 done list. Bob Reed, you do not need to worry, I already have the Frank Robinson. A pending swap with Mac, may get me to 1/2 way on the 1938 Goudey set. Numerous other sets werestarted at the National. While this was mainly English issued Soccer and Cricket cards, it also includes 1965 Buffalo Bills Coke caps (C version), and 1976 Holiday Inn MSA Discs. A phrase I coined for OBC is, "1 is a typecard, 2 and you are collecting them." So by picking up my 2nd 1963 Kahn and a 1927 W560, plus 2 more 1955 Johnston Coookies and 1969-70 Bazooka BB box panels, I now am officially collecting those 4 sets as well. I also picked up 5 new type cards, 3 were prewar and 2 were Venezuelan issues. With only 1 set (1978 Papa Gno's) finished at the National, the number of sets being worked on has grown. Let the jokes resume. ================= Date: Tue, 18 Aug 2009 21:27:32 -0500 (CDT) To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: hoot_owl1@verizon.net Subject: a few random thoughts on the 1962 Post and Jello sets
Greetings OBC--
I decided to put my 1962 Post, 1962 Post Canadian and 1962 Jello sets in the same binder today--each number having its own row in a nine-pocket sleeve with extras on the same page (color variations, blue lines, and other variations). I am missing 14 Post Canadians and more than a 100 Jellos--but here are some observations.
Some interesting notes:
1) there are a ton of color variations in the Post set.
2) the photos between all three sets are both sized and cropped differently.
     a) The Post set could be considered the "big head" set.
     b) More of the player is included in both the Jello and Post Canadian set--but they are cropped differently.
3) the text on the 62 Jello cards wraps differently than the 62 Posts--because the cards don't have the Post logo--so lines break differently.
3) The language for the Post and Post Canadian sets had to be done about the same time.  Shortly after October 10, 1961--the date of the expansion draft for the Houston Colt 45s and the New York Mets. A number of players have an * line at the bottom of the card *Drafted by the New York Mets on 10/10/61".
4) Rocky Bridges and Ted Kluzewski have "*unconditionally released on October 11, 1961"  I don't have Bridges from the Canadian set or the Jello set and their was no Jello Kluzewski produced--but the same released language exists on his Post Canadian card.
5) The earliest 62 Jello card with a traded date that I have is #38 Johnny Temple--with the language *traded to Orioles 10/16/01. This information is not on either the Post or Post Canadian version.
6) The latest date on any Jello card I have is Bill Pierce #54--"*traded to Giants 11/30/61.
7) A number of 62 Jello cards have a last line of new text added to the cards--Roger Maris and Frank Robinson have lines indicating that they won the 1961 MVPs and Whitey Ford has similar language for the Cy Young Award.  Haven't come across the NL Cy Young winner.
A couple of conclusions:
It seems that Post had already set their checklist near the end of the 1961 baseball season--and had typeset bio copy and had pictures for all the cards at the latest, early October.  No updates were made past the Oct. 11 release date of Big Klu and Rocky.  It is also interesting to note that the advertising rollout with Mantle and Maris inserts appeared in the April 14, 1962 issue of Life Magazine.  Seems cereal boxes had to be printed well ahead of time.
The 1962 Jello set on the other hand had a later copy cut-off--in early December sometime, based on the Billy Pierce traded information.  This allowed Jello to add award winners information on selected cards--and later traded information as well.
Two other interesting tidbits while reviewing the cards--Ron Hanson's Jello card has something your won't see on any of today's cards  "*recalled to active duty on 11/2/61." The other note was on Jake Wood's card--he set the major league record by striking out 141 times in 1961. A few players have struck out a few more times than that since--I guess it is a different game.
All for now--
Peter Mead

We used to make 2 teams (sometimes Orioles v. Red Sox, sometimes all stars) with our '69 topps. We would then arrange the home team on the floor, by position, as if there were a field there. Then the visitors lead-off hitter would be placed by the catcher, and we would use the '68 game cards and play a game, moving the players around the bases, etc.. If there was a 1-2-3 inning, switching the teams would take much longer than the inning itself... sort of like today with TV commercials :) Usually we would have a paper scoreboard. So I would take my SF Giants team baseball cards (sorted by lineup) for that year and the NL team cards that the Giants were really playing that day and I'd put the cards in the back of my jeans pockets, and go outside and play a game of stair baseball. So I'd pull the lead-off hitterout of my jeans pocket, put it in the back of the stack and throw the ballat the stairs on my front porch, and the game was on. We had (3) stairs. If I hit the edge of the bottom stair the tennis ball would "pop up". If I hit the edge of the middle stair the ball would be a line drive, sometimes going over my head and over my Dad's Volkswagon Beetle parked behind me on the street for a home run (that was always my main target). If I hit the edge of the top stair the ball would be a low line drive right at me. And if I missed any of the stair edges that would be a ground ball and I'd field and throw to first base by throwing the ball to the house wall next to the stairs (that always preturbed my Mom since it made a racket and usually left spots all over the walls :) and I'd catch the return bounceas a throw to first base. Sooo...that was my game of stair baseball andI'd use my baseball cards to form the game play. Of course that means all my SF Giants cards from the 60's and early 70's show most of the wear from being in my jeans pockets :) But I wouldn't trade those cards for anything. Every time I go thru my binders and I see these cards that have the "been thru the back of the jeans look", I remember how much fun I had playing stair baseball as a kid. Also, ironically, all that stair baseballreally helped me improve my throwing and fielding when I played little league Jerry Coker ================= To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com Date: Sat, 22 Aug 2009 12:07:28 -0400 From: Wite3@aol.com Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] Re: Baseball Card Stupidity 101 I bought most of my cards at my little league snack bar. My mom would give me enough money for a snack, drink and whatever was left over or that I had saved during the week went to cards. From 1977-1983 this was my ritual. I would get to the field early, buy my snack and drink and usually two or three packs of cards. I would open them and sort them. I was smart enough to put the bad players on the outside of the stack (I hated Reggie so he was often on the outside). Then I would put them in my back pocket during the game. I often came home with scuffed and creased cards on the outside but nicer ones on the inside. If I had to slide alot, then most of them would be crushed...oh well. -----Original Message----- From: Walker To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com; tjv815 Sent: Fri, Aug 21, 2009 10:59 pm Subject: [OBC-Ramblings] Re: Baseball Card Stupidity 101 "... ...Just wondering what were some of the things others in the group did with their cards before/after sorting them." Two unrelated favors--
Could someone possibly copy (or scan) and forward to me updated SCD pages on 62/63 Jello and all of the early 1960 Post sets.  The latest copy of the SCD that I have is 1998--and much of that information is a little outdated (just a little):)
Secondly, does anyone have a website or any information on Buffalo Bills matchbooks from 1965-1967.  I see three as part of a large lot in the upcoming Huggins and Scott auction and I picked one up for $3 at the National--but I can't find anything else about them anywhere.
Any and all help is appreciated--

While Top Golf is no longer in the OBC directory, he's still firmly attached to the OBC family as many will attest to. In fact one of my main reasons for relocating to Las Vegas from the Philippines was to enjoy the perennial "Top Golf Vegas Experience" that accompanied the Nationals that were a fixture here at one time. I was so much looking forward to the OBC gatherings at Mike's house and his famous BBQ, hosting the golf tournament and "rubber" games. Alas those days are no longer much to my dismay. I did hook up with Mike shortly after arriving in Vegas two years ago. He doesn't play as much golf anymore or obviously enjoy his card hobby as much now either. The latter primarily due to the dearth of anything available here in Vegas, bummer! Both things that I'm trying to get him back into, a work in progress. He has his own high-end bicycle shop (which I've visited a couple of times) and spends most of his spare time on the road with his cycling buddies now. We had talked about getting together for a 51's game, but didn't happen last year mostly because of my work schedule working nights and weekends. And it took until almost the end of the season this year to make it happen. Mike wanted to watch his team the Albuquerque Isotopes (Dodgers AAA affiliate, you can tell by the shirt he's wearing in the attached picture and no comments please). So the home date with them obviously determined when we could get together. And now I suspect I know where that name Isotopes that is in the OBC Fantasy baseball league comes from. Would have never guessed. Anyway, it was a terrific night talking with Mike about everything and meeting his lovely wife Cindy and their two daughters Renee and Julie and their families. The three granddaughters are all beautiful little girls and just fun to watch. The 51's won the game with some great pitching and timely hitting. Cashman Park is a beautiful ballpark and it was a perfect night to take in a game. Not a very big crowd as usual though. We had a really great time and I so much regret we had not done it sooner and more often. Definitely won't be the last time and look forward to many more social times, hopefully some at the park. Thanks Mike and Cindy for a great time. I have had a Nolan Ryan Authenic Jersey in my closet for years and always wanted to have him sign it,Which I finally got. It was nice seeing Nolan and he was ok friendly. I must say many 69 mets did show up, including Nolan Ryan and Tom Seaver. This was the must unorganized autograph session I have ever been to. The cramed the dealers in with the autographers, no room to move around. I felt so sorry for the dealers, as no one could get to their tables. It was standing room only and you waited hours to get autographs, it was like a cattle drive. It was nice seeing Buddy Harrelson, Cleon Jones and Rod Gasper waiting for a car to pick them up and in the mean time they were posing with fans ,signing free autos and talking about baseball to us. In spite of the fact that we were running a bit late we arrived in plenty of time to catch a decent rendition of the National Anthem, the introductionof the ballist for each team, followed by the ump calling the first "striker to the line!" It is important to note that in the previous game in this I-75 rivalry, theGrand Blanc team did in fact Thrash the Old Goats by a huge margin. Something like 12 - 2, if memory serves, but probably not. Mike did not mention that the Town Constable was on hand tomaintain law and order. Given the fact that he was there in somewhat of an unofficial capacity, being a Sundayand all, he was not shy about taking a nip or two from his vest pocket flask. He also let it be known that he would not hesitate to shoot any unruly Saginaw crank (spectator) punctuating that statement by occasionally drawing back his overcoat to expose his sidearm. As Mike did mention the winning run scored when 2 of our ballist committed muffs on the same play.Otherwise it was a nail biting hurlers duel with some spectacular defensive plays. Sitting directly behindthe strikers we witnessed several deads made by the behinders on foul balls. After the game we returned to the House of Maxwell for a bite to eat and some conversating, including of course some Rich thoughts. After my wife checkedthe homeowners policy we were indeed allowed to man the grill. I camein second place in the food consumption match with my wife abstaining. Perhaps inspired by the baseball game, Mike attempted to engage my English Mastiffs in a game of fetch. Mom perked an ear but did not otherwise move, oneof the pups gave up half way to the ball and the other lost interest onceshe realized it wasn't all that edible. After watching a few innings of the Tigers game and being reasonably sure that it was going in the lost column, Mikebade usfarewell and headed south. Perhaps the highlight of the afternoon for me was discovering that Ipossessed a few pre-war Tigers thatMike did not, go figure? A post script here: according to Webstera howitzer is "a short cannon designed to fire shells in a highcurve, capable of striking hidden targets. Also a catapult." That aptly describes what we used to refer to as a Texas League single. Anyone know the origin of that?"we keep what we give away!" From: mikesportsfan To: OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com Sent: Sunday, August 23, 2009 10:37:09 PM Subject: [OBC-Thanks] FOOT Follow-up Earl Kilborne offered to host a FOOT gathering today. There was a historic BB game in his neighborhood today. Historic BB, for those not familiar, is a game played by the rules from the 1800s. Today'sgame, between Earl's hometown Grand Balnc Thrashers and the currect World Champion of Histopric BB, Saginaw Old Golds was played according to 1867 rules. No mitts and ball is similar to what a rubber coated hardball of today is. Excellent defense wasthe highlight of the game. Earl had a little trouble accepting the rule that catching the ball on 1 bounce is an out. Balls and Strikes are only called if the hurler was not coming close to the plate or the striker (batter) was not swinging. Lots of terminology to lean, but as a veteran of these games, I knew almost all of them. The 1 term we were completely unfamiliar with is what a deepfly to the outfield was called. They informed us it was a Howitzer. We thought that was a WWII term, but then thought maybe the WWII gun was named after an old term. Very close and low scoring game, but he Old Golds rallied to win 3-2, on a run attributed to 2 muffs (errors) in the bottom of the 8th. A coin flip determined who got to strike first, so the Old Golds batted last. Een though the score was 3-2 after 8 1/2, the Old Golds were allowed to bat in the bottom of the 9th, and did so, but did not add to their winning margin. After the game, we went back to Earl's where he showed me the room dedicated to Dustin(for those that do not recall Earl's son who passed away a few years ago and we did a fundraiser to help endow a hockey scholarship in his memory) and also parts of his collection. Always great to see a few prewar Tigers that I do not have. Earl's wife Phyllis allowed us to man the grill ourselves. I got the impression this was a rare occurence at the house of Maxwell. I ate a nice balanced meal of 2 kosher hot dogs, 2 hamburgers and 2 grilled chicken legs. Once the Tigers started getting shelled I took the hour drive back home. Thanks to Earl for hosting today and sorry no one else from the group was able to attend. I did find a bunch of greenies, but I decided to take it further and looked for some of the other 1960's variations. Although I did find a bunch of the more common checklist variations as well as common variations I also found a few less common ones. I did find a McCormick card with no mention of a trade which was pretty unusual and a few others like this. My most unusual variaton that I found wasa 1967 Ed Spiezio card that my SGC collectors guide talked about. The card was unusual in that part of name was nearly absent in what looked like some sort of printers defect.
